Fitness is a lifetime commitment, but you can accelerate results and transform your body in 12 weeks, says Bob Greene, best known as Oprah Winfrey's personal trainer. Not for the "move a little" crowd, this program is intense and challenging, whatever your starting level. "It's a bit like boot camp," Greene acknowledges. You'll do vigorous aerobic exercise 15 (beginning level), 30 (intermediates), or 45 (advanced) minutes 6 days a week, and increase 2 minutes each week--and double your usual minutes for one workout a week. You'll also strength train with dumbbells or machines and do functional training (strengthening stabilizing muscles).
The eating plan is not a diet--rather Greene describes 5 eating rules to help you eat fewer and burn more calories: curb emotional eating, eat breakfast, establish an eating cut-off time, drink lots of water, and limit alcohol. You'll get enough calories to sustain your intense exercise routine, but cut out the calories otherwise stored as fat.
Greene, author of Get With the Program and Make the Connection, also analyzes popular diets, and fills the book with motivational stories of his successful clients. Recommended for those who are ready to commit to an intense program to burn fat, increase metabolism, and change habits for the long haul. --Joan Price

Greene's genuine attachment to address the root causes for poor eating and activity habits, and to guide the reader through building the strong emotional foundation necessary to undergo physical changes, make Total Body Makeover a standout companion to transforming your body, inside and out. Amazon.com editor Nathalie Farage recently caught up with Greene. Read on.

The Book of an Expert.......2007-09-21
There is no doubt hat Bob Geen is an expert in his field. Just enough to look at Oprah Winfrey today and compare her image with that one of a few years ago... I do appreciate the fact that Mr. Green takes it slowly and does not promise overnight results. He also presents some sensible dieting rules like avoiding "emotional eating" (a big problem for many people), establishing daily cut-off time for eating, and drinking a lot of water. These are all very similar suggestion that I have also found in the book Can We Live 150 Year by Tombak. In addition, Dr. Tombak suggests a special fasting schedule for the purpose of cleansing your body and adopting a new life style. The resulting loss of weight is a natural outcome of that life style.
Hype exceeds content.......2007-09-09
Although informative, this lacked any new information and seemed more motivational than helpful. As a reader, I was disappointed although for someone just beginning the process, helpful.
At home or in the gym.......2007-03-31
This quick weight loss plan gives inspirational stories and an exercise plan that can be done at home or in the gym.
good book, total makeover.......2007-02-20
I liked the book and it was pretty good at describing the exercises.
ONE WORD BORING.......2007-02-12
I am a bit of a fanatic o.k. obsessive, about dieting I have read alot of books but this one was so dull I actually skipped some of it. Unless you have a lot of time it starts at 30 or 60(if your in shape) to somedays you have to exercise 60-90 minutes to follow the program. Who really has the time? Anyhow there are tons of inspirational stories actually it seemed like half the book. I don't recommend it!

Hard-ass Palm Beach County judge Bob Isom Gibbs enjoys sending even petty offenders away to do hard time -- which has made the list of miscreants who want him dead longer than a fully grown Florida gator's tail. And a good number of his illwishers are probation officer Kathy Baker's clients, including young Dale Crowe and his psycho uncle Elvin. Now, Kathy's got an even more daunting task than keeping BIG's horny hands off her: keeping "Maximum Bob" alive. Because Gibbs's many enemies seem to be willing to go to any lengths -- be it death by amphibian or some more tried-and-true method -- to permanently end the career of an oversexed, racist jurist who's more interested in scoring than in saving his own red neck.

hyped-up hack-work.......2007-05-06
Only in latter-day America could a pure hack like Elmore Leonard earn praise from supposedly serious critics, who, like the popular culture they represent, have sunk to levels that would have been unimaginable a generation ago.
Leonard is a commerical writer trying to appeal to the airheaded, politically-correct prejudices of the kinds of "hip" upper-middle-class urbanites and suburbanites who, for example, read the editorial pages of the big metro papers (and write their book reviews) and imagine this kind of thing has something to do with reality or something to do with literature. The characters, dialogue and situations Leonard is noted for in fact ring false on every page. These are the same kind of caricatures and sitcom-esque back-and-forth that could only fool the demographic I just described, that is, people who know nothing about the sub-culture, the legal system, the South, and the other things this poser pretends to be telling them about (to make them feel better about their own pointless collective existence, I suppose).
The worst offense among the lit-pimps are the comparisons of Leonard to Raymond Chandler (a true great), which are simply insulting on every level. Please add a little bit of sanity to this world and go re-read one of Chandler's classics yet again (or, if you like Florida as a setting, read John D. MacDonald, the best of the Chandler imitations) rather than waste time or money on this tone-deaf sleaze merchant, who quite typically pounds out another one of these modern-day pulp jobs about once every other month.
Maximum Leonard.......2006-02-17
Crisp, punchy dialogue -- twists in plot that will keep you guessing -- sharply drawn fascinating characters -- and a gator! This is Elmore Leonard at his best. In case you are curious, the title refers to a judge whose proclivity is for giving the maximum sentence allowed by law. Highly recommend this book.
not as good as the short-lived TV show.......2005-07-14
I picked this up after watching Beau Bridges play Maximum Bob in the short-lived TV series, which had amazing razor sharp wit, and subtle irony. It is a sorry statement about the intelligence of TV viewers that it was cancelled and now we have "reality TV." The book was not as sharp as the TV show, which really refected Leonard's zany wit, but I probably liked the book more than I would have on it's own because it reminded me of the great show that I can't see any more.
Leonard scrapes the bottom rung of society yet again.......2005-03-09
Judge Bob Gibbs, or, as his friends call him, "Big," is known for handing out the maximum sentence for even the pettiest of crimes. Kathy Baker is a probation officer who runs into the hard-nosed judge while working on the case of Dale Crowe, a punk kid who can't keep out of trouble. Gibbs has always had girls on the side since his wife has become more and more distant over the years, and is interested in Kathy from the get-go.
A live alligator ends up in Gibbs's yard one day, prompting a police investigation, with any number of suspects, including Dale Crowe's mischievous uncle Elvin, who was sent to prison by Maximum Bob, and just recently released. Along the way, we run into a whole cast of colorful Floridian characters from the seedier side, including an unlicensed dermatologist and his Cuban houseboy - both mischievous in their own ways.
Elmore Leonard has a keen ear for dialogue and, in my opinion, is second to none in today's crime fiction writing. His characters are society's outcasts: criminals who can't stay out of trouble because they are just too stupid. But he treats them with full attention, and they never act out of character; everyone's got their motives, it's just a matter of who can outfox the others by being less incompetent.
Good characters; Great dialogue; Very uneven.......2004-03-06
Maximum Bob's a frightening Judge to end up with if you're a defense attorney. An old fashioned hanging judge, he makes State's Attorneys relax, police witnesses calm down, and defendants shiver. He's also kind a promiscuous man, chasing women with utter disregard for the EEOC and HR. Along comes Kathy Baker, a DOC (Department of Corrections) Probation Officer. She's like many of the Leonard heroines, attractive, gritty and while not amoral clearly someone willing to go all the way to get her man. This is excellent news for Sergeant Gary Hammond, one of the good guys. The bad news for Elvin Crowe and his nephew Dale, two lifetime, recidivist convicts, is that she also means them.
The alligator, Dickey Campeau, Leanne, Earlene, Dr. Tommy, Wesley and Hector all add to the United Nations mish-mash of dysfunction, crime, love and humor.
The dialogue, always a Leonard strong suit, gets better and better. Unfortunately, the plot seems unfocused. It takes a long time to get up a head of steam. We keep floundering around the set-up. What's Elvin going to do? What's Gary going to do? Is Leanne coming home? Is there a second alligator? But then it speeds up and we are led to believe that now, finally, the thrilling climax . . . . only to discover that it slows down . . .to speed up. Tedious. And a lot of unanswered issues and characters.
That's why they give awards to film editing. There was none here.
Good for the charcters and the dialogue; poor for the story and the finale. Larry Scantlebury

Book Description
Described by
New York Times critic John Rockwell as “one of the best non-famous composers this country has to offer,” Ben Johnston reconceives familiar idioms--ranging from jazz to Southern hymns--using just intonation. Johnston studied with Darius Milhaud, Harry Partch, and John Cage, and is best known for his
String Quartet No. 4, a complex series of variations on
Amazing Grace. This volume reveals he is also a truly literate composer, who writes and speaks about music with eloquence and charm.
“Maximum Clarity” and Other Writings on Music spans forty years and brings together forty-one of Johnston’s most important writings, including many rare and several previously unpublished selections. They include position papers, theoretical treatises, program notes, historical reflections, lectures, excerpts from interviews, and letters, and they cover a broad spectrum of concerns--from the technical exegesis of microtonality to the personal and the broadly humanistic. The volume concludes with a discography of all commercially available recordings of Johnston’s music.
Customer Reviews:
Enthusiastically recommended for academic library and music department reference collections........2006-12-09
Expertly edited by Bob Gilmore Reader in Musicology, Dartington College of Arts, England), "Maximum Clarity And Other Writings On Music" is a collection of writings on music by Professor Ben Johnston who taught theory and composition from 1951 to 1984 at the University of Illinois School of Music at Urbana-Champaign. Utilizing intonation, Professor Johnston reconceives familiar idioms ranging from neoclassicism and serialism, to jazz and southern hymns. This body of Professor Johnston's writings spans the whole of his professional career and documents him as a truly literate composer who was able to write about his own music as well as the music of others with accuracy, insight, and eloquence. "Maximum Clarity And Other Writings On Music" conforms to the highest standards of scholarship while being completely accessible to students and non-specialist general readers with an interest in music interpretation and criticism. Enhanced with a discography of all commercially available recordings of Professor Johnston's music, "Maximum Clarity And Other Writings On Music" is enthusiastically recommended for academic library and music department reference collections.

For Karigan G'ladheon, the call of magic in her blood is too strong to resist. Karigan returns to the Green Riders, the magical messengers of the king, to find she's badly needed. Rider magic has become unstable, many Riders have been lost, and the Rider corps is seriously threatened. The timing couldn't be worse. An ancient evil, long dormant, has reawakened, and the world is in peril. Karigan must face deadly danger and complex magic to save the kingdom from certain doom.

This fat fantasy is the author's first published novel. Although the typical back cover quotes from Anne McCaffrey and Marion Zimmer Bradley overpraise it somewhat--"stunning," "terrific," "classic"--it's a good, highly readable debut. Kristen Britain tells her story at a headlong pace and with considerable charm. Young heroine Karigan hardly has time to regret being expelled from school (for dueling) before finding herself committed to the desperate errand of a murdered Green Rider. The Riders are an elite messenger corps using both horses and magic; the message is a terrible warning. Bad things from bad places are invading this fantasyland, their presence being only part of a devious, sorcery-aided human struggle for the throne. Karigan's wild ride is beset by a variety of enemies, but aided by her own developing talents plus certain strange allies. These include the tormented ghost of the dead Green Rider himself--still pierced by and trying to resist the chief villain's black arrows that ensnare the soul. Delivering the message to a suspicious court is only half Karigan's job: can it be interpreted in time? The pages turn fast, the heroine is likeable and the villains hissable, and all ends as it should. Nice one. --David Langford, Amazon.co.uk

"A mesmerizing fantasy and an appealing heroine."--Romantic Times

God Awful.......2007-08-29
I would rather walk through hot coals while being forced to listen to John Tess sing, than read this book again. The writing is horrible. There is little to no characterization. And nothing really happens. Seriously, there is a ten page scene about the MC bedding down in a deserted waystation and nothing else.
Please don't waste your money and time. There are so many _good_ books out there!
So what?.......2007-07-07
I have to say, if you are someone who isn't a fantasy "nerd" who reads a lot of these kinds of books, this book is freaking awesome. I NEVER read fantasy, because most of the time, a lot of fantasy books are so advanced in all their fantasy terms and advanced magical what-nots, that if you want to try reading a good fantasy it can be hard to understand. Even though some of the previous reviewers might say that this book is "cliché" with all of the cliché writings of a fantasy book, I disagree. It's possible those reviewers have read a lot of different fantasy and have a more advanced outlook on what fantasy should be, good for them. For the rest of us who don't read fantasy all the time and want to have a good read and understand what's going on in the story- this book is great! So for all of you who don't read fantasy, or like fantasy and aren't super critical, read this, it's awesome! WOOT for Green Rider and Kristen Britain :)
I adore this book!.......2007-07-02
When this book came out, I was 14 years old; I bought it on a whim for the drive home from San Fransisco to Texas. I am usually a very slow reader, but I loved the plot so much that I could not put the book down and was able to finish in just 2 days. I have read it 5 times since and hunted for a sequel for 9 years, which I finally found.
Ms. Britian is the kind of writer that throws you into the action. Her book starts with action and does not stop. The protagonist is a strong spirited woman who inspires courage in the reader and is likable. True, this is your typical coming of age story, but the plot is something a little different, which I like. The story has a little bit of reality blended with just enough magic to be believable and enjoyable.
I believe this book is a worthwhile read for teens and young adults who enjoy fantasy.
Along for the ride.......2007-06-30
I decided to get this book at my local used bookstore because it was rated so highly by everyone here at Amazon. Maybe my expectations were too high because of that, but I wasn't overly impressed with this debut novel. I will probably eventually read the second book in this series because I have heard that she improved greatly from this book to that one. The characters seemed very flat to me, and the world was not overly unique. I did enjoy the plot and thought the storyline moved along well. The action is definately continunous, if not overly engrossing. I would recommend this book if you are looking for a fun read that doesn't require a great deal of effort on the readers part.
An Evenings Entertainment.......2007-06-22
Kristen Britain created a light easy read in her first novel "Green Rider". There were enough familiar fantasy elements to keep the reader comfortable and enough new elements to entertain. I particularly enjoyed the eccentric Berry sisters and their world within a world.
Though many of the elements were familiar they were woven into the story in such a way that they seemed to belong to the world. Except for her use of the Elves. Britain seemed to rely heavily on the Tolkienesque idea of Elves while at the same time creating a sharp deviation from the Tolkien myth. I believe the story would have been better served if she had recreated the race and made it more fully her own.
However, in all I enjoyed the book. If you are looking for some light entertainment to while away an evening I would recommend this book. If you would like to comment on my review please visit my blog http://oncesoldtales.blogspot.com/

Along for the ride Part II.......2007-07-18
This book is about as good as the first one. Nothing spectacular, but not terrible either. After reading two books, I will read the third when it comes out because I hate not knowing how things will end up in any story. This book picks up a couple years after the ending of Green Rider with Karigan now officially being a Green Rider. Mornhavon has returned, though not in a human form, and magic is going crazy all over Sacoridia. The first half of the book is a little slow, but the second half picks up speed and I found it much more entertaining. I think Britain is improving, but still has a little work to do. I am interested to see where she goes with the blossoming love story.
The Green Rider/First Rider's Call.......2007-06-27
This are two of my favorite books. I can read them over and over and never get tired of them and I do a lot of other reading. My only complaint is that the time between books is way to long!
Charm doesn't disappear.......2007-05-14
Kristen Britain does a good job helping kerigan to grow up. The story is still very interesting. The only thing wrong with it is the third book isn't out yet.-Johnson
Good Book.......2007-02-18
I thought this book was even better than the first. It has more depth with a two part storyline. One set in the past with Karigan's ancestor and Lil the founder of the Green Riders - and second in the present with Karigan (with lil's help) is trying to figure out why magic is suddenly going wrong. Unlike a previous reviewer I did not think the romantic tension between Karigan and King Zachary was superfluous to the novel. But I do agree that if the author was going to introduce this tension in the plot she should have done so in more detail and much sooner. As it is Karigan doesn't figure out her feelings for the King until the very end of the book, when its too late anyway. Although I do believe its a build up for the next novel. All in all this is a good book that I would recommend reading to anyone.
Very disappointing. A direct ripoff of sooo many other fantasy books........2007-01-09
I read Britain's first book Green Rider, and it really wasn't bad - so I was quite looking forward to the second one. Sorry to say though, it wasn't worth the wait. It's dull, trite, very predictable and pretty much a direct plot rip-off of at least 10 books that I can think of (George R.R. Martin is a MUCH better writer, so don't 'borrow' part of his plot - it shows!) She also has some really horrible writing in this one. I'm having a hard time finishing it and certainly won't be buying the third one.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful introduction to English riding for kids..........2000-10-21
I bought this book for my daughters, aged 6 and 8. While they've been interested in horses for many years, they didn't start formal lessons until this year. As a horsewoman of many years I've been pleased to share my interest with them, and wanted to give them a good starter book. This is perfect for that.
The book has only 65 pages, but with its large size and wealth of photos it does an excellent job of communicating a large amount of information. It covers a number of topics, including: chosing a riding school; basic tack and equipment; various gaits; jumping; trail and road riding; grooming and stable care; food and feeding; horse and pony health; showing your horse; and other basic equestrian principles. There is also an excellent glossary and index to round out the book.
All in all this is a great introductory book for kids up to teens, and if your child has expressed an interest in learning more about horses and riding English, this is a good book to buy.
What a great childrens book!.......2000-05-19
I love this book. I bought this book when I first started riding. I spent hours looking at the pictures and re-reading the text. It covers everything from choosing a stable to show prep. I would highly recomend it for any young begginer.
A Great book.......1999-01-03
This book was written very well and has helped me a great deal. You got to get it!! Also if you are a horse lover and are going to take lessons this handy dandy guide will help you out.
