These days there's plenty of S/M in anthologies of lesbian erotica. Everyone's thinking about it, apparently, even if not all of us are doing it. Who better than Pat Califia, an expert in the exchange of power, to select and introduce the latest edition of Best Lesbian Erotica, with its considerable emphasis on consensual power play? Califia's own story, "Blood and Silver," is the best-written in the book, a sharp-fanged, Angela Carteresque rewriting of "Little Red Riding Hood." Other high points include Rachel Kramer Bussel's "Monica and Me," in which a fan shares a night of sapphic bliss with Monica Lewinsky (who needs a cigar?), and Thea Hutcheson's "The Stars in Her Mouth," a tale of sexual rescue by an otherworldly woman. Although not the rawest or most innovative collection, the 2001 edition of Best Lesbian Erotica does win points for breadth of interest. There are bathroom scenes in vanilla and several more piquant flavors, a classic daddy/girl scenario, a Vampire tale, gender play aplenty, and a scattering of odes to passion of the heart, as well as of the loins. --Regina Marler

Book Description

Best Lesbian Erotica 2001 is as steamy as ever, featuring writers on a par with those in previous editions, such as Dorothy Allison, Heather Lewis, Joan Nestle, and Cecilia Tan.

4 out of 5 stars A Stand-Out Collection.......2002-08-25

Best Lesbian Erotica 2001 is my favorite in the series (thus far). The majority of the submissions are imaginative and sexy. Stories of note include "Business Casual" by Lauren Sanders, "If You Can Make It There..." by A.J. Stone, and "Water Music" by Elspeth Potter. The story, "Monica and Me" by Rachel Bussel, is a sexy seduction of a certain infamous Monica and another surprising gem in this collection.

3 out of 5 stars 50/50 "Best Of".......2002-05-03

I enjoy these books. I have them starting in '98. In all of the books, I feel I get my monies worth, BUT there always writings in each book that I do not enjoy. The eclectic collection has something for everyone, so you are sure to enjoy some of what you read IF not all. I recommend the collection for Lesbian Erotic fans. I hope you enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars If you are a lesbian with gender issues..........2001-09-14

I was very disappointed with this book. Patrick Califa-Rice should have chosen a more specific title for this book, such as "lesbians who don't like to read about lesbians and want their girlfriends to be men". A majority of the short stories deal with gender issues, and gender play in sex which is too broadly described as being aimed toward lesbians.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite.......2001-06-21

This stories are wonderfully written, I loved specially Pat Califia's writing style, excellent buy....

While the editor of this fine annual collection, Marcy Sheiner, argues in her introduction that these stories dwell on "the darker side of sex"--revenge, anger, grief--there is a redemptive quality to passion that often outweighs whatever unworthy motives may have inspired the deed. Although there is plenty of frivolous, one-handed reading in this year's edition, many of the pieces included have the hallmarks of literary fiction; they are not merely about a sexual event, but offer a revelation of character through that event. Lisa Glatt's "Waste," Anne Tourney's "Rope Burn," and Susannah Indigo's "The Language of Snakes" would shine in any short story anthology. Yet even the simplest and most graphic stories here can surprise the reader with their casual illuminations. In Tabitha Flyte's "After Loss," for example, a young woman and her brother-in-law stumble into sex after returning from her father's funeral. When she first feels his comforting arms around her, she reflects on how differently men and women embrace: "When I am hugged by a woman I feel that the arms around me say, 'Yes, you can do it, you can.' When I am held by a man I feel that I am being told, 'No, you don't have to do it, you don't.'" A remarkable volume, evidence of the considerable talent being directed toward erotica in recent years. --Regina Marler

Book Description

There's a new audience of readers who demand the most intelligent, provocative women's erotica - stories that tell the truth about women's sexuality in all its variety and emotional depth," writes series editor Marcy Sheiner. A decade after the explosion of women-authored erotica hit the publishing world, the genre has evolved to a sophisticated level of stunning talent and startling sexual honesty. As with the first volume, which included notable erotica authors such as Tara Alton, Hanne Blank, Cara Bruce, Susannah Indigo, Maryanne Mohanraj, Leslea Newman, and Susan St. Alban, Best Women's Erotica 2001 features 20 stories by authors whose work has appeared in Playgirl, Penthouse, Playboy, and Libido.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-04-05

First, I would like to point out that this anthology seems to be geared toward heterosexual women, although there are a couple lesbian/bisexual stories. If you prefer stories with a lesbian or bisexual bent, then I suggest passing on this and picking up an anthology geared specifically toward lesbian/bi sex. It should also be said that if you are a fan of the erotic anthologies edited by Susie Bright, you may not like this anthology as this book stays away from the shocking just for the sake of being shocking material so often present in Ms. Bright's anthologies.

I've read innumerable erotic anthologies, and this is by far my favorite. Not only are the stories intelligent, but they stay away from the old, boring, technical descriptions of the in/out. If you like an erotic story that is very sexually detailed (like a sports play by play), then you may not like this. Instead, and refreshingly, most of the authors ventured into the deeper aspects of sex.

In the opening story, Nine Seven Zero, the narrator tells us how her boyfriend, as he is leaving her, helped her break free of her destructive sexual binds. In "The C*** Book, we learn the story of John's "Uncle Jacques", who took pictures of women's genitals over the course of 80 years and collected them in a book. Intrigued, the narrator lets John take her picture, and for the first time is able to see herself as a man would see her. In "Just Passing Through" a woman disguises herself as a man and goes to a gay nightclub to find out what sex is like between two men.

I thought the best story was "What the Box Fan Saw", a story of incredibly passionate sex stemming from a fight. This anthology pays as much attention to how things are said as to what is being said. If you enjoy erotica that is intelligent, well written, and aims to get you genuinely aroused instead of merely shocking you, then you'll like this anthology.

5 out of 5 stars Just great.......2005-01-13

Excellent writing and terrific story-telling. It's clear from this volume that women really trump men in sensual, to-the-core descriptions of the sexual experience.

2 out of 5 stars Best Women's Erotica?.......2004-06-17

"The Best Women's Erotica," edited by Marcy Sheiner is composed of 18 erotic short stories written by women supposedly for women. It starts out with a sultry story called "Interrogation," by Susan St. Aubin, but heads down hill fast from there.

I have read short stories in English 110 at the local community college that were more erotic than some the of stories in this book such as "Service Entrance," by Kristina Wright or "Jacks Pride," by Emma Holly. It appears to be geared mainly towards heterosexual middle aged women and MEN. I was rather shocked at all of the stories geared towards the stimulation of the characters male counter parts. While there was some cunnilings in the stories, the constant emphasis was on the women pleasing their men. The stories simply were not detailed enough about the art of orally stimulating a woman, as a matter of fact in a couple of them one gets the feeling the writers are almost embarrassed to be writing about it. I found a bit annoying to say the least. As fantasies by women, for women should focus more on women. Not women going down on men in 80% of the stories. Also it had little to NO ethnicity to it. Shame on you ladies in the melting pot of America!

If your a feminine lesbian or a bisexual female looking for a hot story on a cold winters night then I would suggest moving on. As far as the lesbian community goes it had a couple poorly written "Butch" (Yes in the stories the characters refer to themselves as butches, it's not just my observation.) stories worthy of toilet humor at best. After I finished reading it I thumbed back through noting the difference between the detailed writing style on the heterosexual stories verses the couple of butch stories. That totally blew my mind since according to most surveys sex between the average man and woman last between 20 - 30 minutes according to several different surveys (...)

This 2003 edition has been out for quite some time and the description provided by Amazon refers to a previous edition in the collection. I hoped they were just a little behind but with the 2004 edition on the horizon, I hope that Amazon soon changes the book description to reflect the contents of BWE2003 instead of 2001 or whichever ed. this refers to.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent erotica.......2003-04-20

I'm generally not an erotica fan but borrowed the book from my wife. Some of the stories were stereotypical erotica, but a lot of them surprised me. There are a lot of stories of great literary quality. I really enjoyed the book.

3 out of 5 stars A better anthology than most.......2003-01-05

Anthologies are ALWAYS a mixed bag. This is a better grouping of stories than most. Usually there are a few that just do not appeal to me and that of course is true here. However, there are several that are worth reading more than once....a pleasant surprise.

The editors, suggest that this grouping lacks the "theme" that has emerged in the two prior anthologies. While I agree.....there ARE stories that touch on similar themes. Reading stories with a common aspect but divergent "takes" makes this a fun read.

Best Gay Erotica 2003 is a great book to carry around and read in the "off moments"....those times when you WISH you had something to read but don't have enough time to get fully involved in the 500 page masterpiece of gay fiction you have sitting on the nightstand.

3 out of 5 stars Best Gay Erotica 2001.......2001-03-06

I gave this 3 stars because there are a few good stories in the book that I would be willing to read again. Gymnasty by Jesse Grant for example. But many of the stories were cold, lacking sexual and/or romantic heat that is necessary for good erotica. Some stories were surreal making it necessary for the reader to tried to decipher what was going on to continue reading it. Erotica can be mindless, thought provoking, romantic, and kinky but it loses power when a reader (me) feels like I'm in a college literature class trying to figure out what the author really saying. Hope this helps.

4 out of 5 stars Nice collection of stories.......2001-12-20

As an "amatuer" erotica writer, I bought this book not only for some creative inspiration, but also to see what kind of material "published" erotica writers create. When I began reading this collection, I realized not only how talented these writers were, but that I still had a little ways to go as a "potential erotica writer." These stories run the gamut from straight, gay, bi, and whatever. Not only was I entertained, but also provided me with the inspiration I needed to create more of my own work, not to mention lots of new fantasies.

From stories of "threesomes" to fantasy lovers to oral sex to working in a peep show and phone sex, they present a good view of sexuality. Unlike two or three other reviewers, I liked this collection of stories. While one or two may not have been to my specific interest, I recognized each work as good writing and story telling.

4 out of 5 stars This Is NOT Penthouse Letters.......2001-11-27

Each story in this multi-faceted volume stands alone as an interesting short piece. Short stories such as these, with no erotic content, would qualify for inclusion in a literary volume of quality short stories. This book explores human nature from many different perspectives, and on that single basis, is an interesting book.

The erotic content only serves to allow readers to explore a part of human nature that is rarely discussed, except in clinical terms, demonized with a broad brush by those who fear it, caricatured by pornographers, or lampooned by comedians. Each author does a masterful job of illuminating feelings, experiences, and desires that generally remain hidden in Society's shadow.

Some of the works are quite tittilating, others, shocking. Of course, that's a statement which tells more about me than about the book. Those seeking a blow by blow description of sex acts would do better with the latest issue of Penthouse. But if you'd like to explore human sexuality, to be teased, to push the envelope of the bourgeouis boudoir, then give this book a chance.

(If you'd like to discuss this book or review further, please click on the "about me" link above and drop me an email. Thanks!)

2 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT THE BEST OF AMERICIAN EROTICA.......2001-08-21

TO SAY THAT THIS IS THE BEST AMERICAN EROTICA FOR 2001, IS FALSE ADVERTIZING. THE NEED TO REMOVE THE EROTICA PART IN THE TITLE. iT IS VERY BLAND, I HAVE READ A LOT OF THE "EROTICA" BOOKS, AND THIS COMES NO WHERE NEAR IT.

IF YOU LIKE EROTICA TRY "THE HOT BLOOD SERIES","BEAUTY'S PUNISHMENT & BEAUTYS RELEASE, BY Anne Rice", ARE JUST A FEW OF THE BEST.

1 out of 5 stars Coasting.......2001-06-14

Too little true erotic content, too much of an attempt to reach for the literary, without the stories being good enough to hold up a literary fiction book. It ends up a bit dull, and quite forgettable. Sheiner's Best Women's Erotica series is doing a much better job of staying modern _and_ hot. Susie Bright's coasting here on past success, which makes the book not worth the time.

2 out of 5 stars too subtle.......2001-03-03

Every February, I go and get the latest BAE. After the diversity of the series, i.e. het/gay, male/female, various races, various behaviors, I was really disappointed with the selection in this edition.

There's not nearly enough explict scenes for me. Rather, the focus of these stories, with a few exceptions, seems to be beating around the bush (no pun intended). I didn't find many stories I wanted to read again and again, completely unlike all the other BAEs.

As far as I'm concerned, for the money, Herotica 6 is more worth my time.

        5 out of 5 stars A very gripping story!.......2007-06-01

This was my first book I have read by these authors, and I must say it is a very good read!! The way the authors tell the emotions and movements of the characters is very detailed, I feel as if I am there amoung Skan and Amberdrake. The writing style couldn't be better. The story follows that of Skandranon, a gryphon broadwing warrior under Urtho's forces in their battle against Ma'ar. I could hardly set this book down at all. I will definately be having to get "The White Gryphon". I strongly recommend this book and these authors.

4 out of 5 stars Dissapointed and angry with such fabulous style.......2007-05-22

This book is fabulously written, with characters readers grow to love and care for, laugh at, and relate to. The imagery conjured up is fantastic- readers are transported to the battlefield in this fast-paced war and are left wondering... did s/he make it? What happens next?

The ending, however, is not for those who enjoy happier endings. I usually don't mind a well written, unhappy ending, but this one bothers me because I feel as if it was thrown together without much consideration to what reader reaction would be. I almost feel scarred from it, emotionally, though I will soon forget this book because the impressions are not lasting, memorable, or in general, good. It was a great ride for the first 350 pages and then it was over for me. Sadly, the ending left me disappointed and angry with life in general. Perhaps this was target action the authors wanted to elicit? If so, they hit it head on.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Great book!.......2006-11-18

This book by Mercedes Lackey is one of the best in the series. It has adventure and mystery and i could hardly put the book down! This book is about the black gryphon Skandranon and Amberdrake the kestra'chern who go to endless lengths to save their world from the evil Ma'ar. But its up to you to go read it and find out the ending!

5 out of 5 stars The Black Gryphon.......2006-10-26

The Black Gryphon is a fantasy book with several main characters and several issues. The story is about a powerful mage who does not believe in violence being forced into war to protect his living, breathing, thinking, creations.
One character in the story is a kesta'churn, or a psychologist. His name is Amberdrake. His good friend is a gryphon referred to as Skandranon (Skan). Skan is a very powerful gryphon, the star of the show in a way.
In the story Skan is injured and while he is recuperating a young female (Zhaneel) catches his interest. Zhaneel is what some call a "misborn". However there is nothing wrong with her. She learns to use her disabilities to her own advantage, but only after a visit to the kesta'chern Amberdrake. She becomes a skillful flyer and peeks Skan's interest. Amberdrake starts to play matchmaker for a pair of gryphons. Unfortunately the gryphon's creator has kept the knowledge of how to reproduce a secret. He believes that if he reveals the secret, the gryphons will leave. The gryphons rebel and steal the information. Even with this knowledge they do not depart the war and stay to help their father and creator.
Meanwhile, Amberdrake is caught up in his own romance. He finds himself in love with one of his clients. The two of them have to deal with the fact that she is a trainer and he is a kesta'churn. Their differences could be a barrier, but they find a way around them.
Despite the personnel victories there's still the problem of the war, and despite the gryphons, mages, and troops, the enemy is still on their doorstep. The friends must fight or run for their lives while protecting their loved ones.
The authors writing style intrigued me. They came up with words for things that already existed. This made the book just a little harder to read. But I still thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a great book with a very solid plot that wasn't so solid that there weren't twists. It was a great story and I would recommend it to anyone in middle school or above.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Writer.......2005-04-07

Mercades Lackey is a great writer, and proves it again with this book! I love that she is able to write above just the war, but inside it as well, the fear for/of friends and the hardships they all have to overcome is just awesome! I'm not going to go into detail about the book, other than read this and its sequel because they are worth it!
