Artists Sketchbook.......2005-07-28
This a well-round art technique and media book for any artist level. I have over 300 art tecnnique books. I considered this book exceptional. I would have given 5 stars, but the printing is too small. If you can read the ingredients on a tube of toothpaste, you will be able to read it. I had to purchase a plastic square magnifying sheet.
Not for beginners.......2004-06-02
This book provides excellent examples in a variety of media. It is the kind of book I look for to provide my students with good examples, things to try out, and the quality they should strive for. If you are an absolute beginner there are other books that will provide you with more basic how-to information than this one does, though I personally think this book is very good in this area as well. I would recommend this book to those people already aquainted with sketching, but wanting to explore visual journaling and using a variety of media.
for artists..........2002-04-02
This is a nice little book--very attractively designed and with lots of gorgeous sketches and samples. I think this book is for artists, though, not beginners. But beginners may find enough inspiration in the examples to want to investigate the techniques further.
A Great Book on How to Keep a Sketchbook!.......2001-11-27
This is a great book! It explains about keeping a sketchbook in various media, and how to use it to make finished drawings and paintings. Great for everyone, no matter how well you draw now.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely Sketch Book.......2007-05-31
I'm personally not a designer or artist... but I got this book as a gift for someone who is an artist. I was surprised at the quality of the book when it arrived for the price. Seems like an amazing value to me! Once it was given to the artist who it was intended for, she absolutely loved it and said it's the best sketchbook she's gotten in a long time... and she seemed even more fond of it than the prismacolor markers I gave her with them! Go figure.
Black Sketchbook Heaven.......2007-03-09
When I purchased the black sketchbook it was for a student of mine that has an interest in art and drawing. However when I received the sketchbook it was of suck fine quality that I wanted to keep it for myself. I gave the student the sketchbook but I am going to order the exact same one for myself. The paper quality was great and the cover beautiful.
Pleased with the quality.......2007-01-30
I recently purchased this item for my son. He likes to draw and is very good at it. I have started a collection of his drawings and this sketchbook displays his drawings. He uses black and color inks and the picture quality is extremely good. Pages do not fall out of book.
Nice sketchbook and a very pleasing price.
Nice sketchbook!.......2006-08-27
This is a reasonable price at about $9.00. It qualifies for free shipping, which is nice.
The pH neutral pages are supposed to never turn yellow, so that's the best thing about the sketchbook. I have a few artist sketches in my book and an artist commented that it was a really nice sketchbook. As the prior review mentioned, I'm not sure about the book binding, but hope it will last for many years. I'm not sure about the number of pages 176 or 224, but it would be nice if it was shown on the sketchbook cover. All in all, I like it.
Reduced page count.......2006-06-07
I've used these sketchbooks as journals for years.
The paper quality is good however, the page count has dropped from 224 pages to 176 pages and I have found the binding is more likely to break with time.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-07-23
I started drawing in Pen & ink back in high school-- IMHO it is one of the most versitile mediums out there. I found this book to be a great resource and one that I use often as a source of reference and inspiration before I begin a drawing. While some of the images may be a little dark--I think if you look at the technique used in creating them you can gain a whole new understanding of the medium. The section on the different types of materials is useful. If you have dabbled in pen & ink and have become addicted to it--then I highly recommend this book. If you are someone that has never tried inking and you want to learn this book might not be for you.
Excellent reference and procedures.......2007-02-21
This book presents procedures you can try at home to better your technique no matter what level you're at. The author generously shares his accumulation of knowledge. Very modern and contemporary. The illustrations are inspiring, you'll want to drop everything and start your own drawings!
Borrow this book from the library.......2005-09-18
I bought this book because it was part of the class list of a course I signed up for. The class was cancelled for lack of registration, and I am now stuck with it.
The most interesting part is a listing of materials used in pen and ink drawing. As for the actual instructions, they are fairly confusing and far from sufficient. They assume you already know what you are doing. This is not a book for beginners, as pen and ink drawing is definitely not for beginners in drawing. This medium requires a great deal of control. There is not much room for corrections or second thoughts. In this regard, it's similar to sumi-e (oriental brush and ink painting).
There are no step-by-step pictures. I would have liked to see how ink washes are done, for example. There are practically no drawings of landscapes. Most of the illustrations are the author's work, and I must admit I found many of them very disturbing and dark. This is not an enjoyable book to leaf through. It might give you nightmares!
I purchased this book used, at the lowest price I could find. I would not recommend buying it at all.
Good for int/adv, great materials explination, inpirational.......2001-06-12
The is a wonderful book for intermediate to advanced pen and ink artists looking for a thorough explanation of materials and a great discussion of the methodology of creating fantastic pen and ink artwork. It is packed with a wide variety of examples that are sure to inspire you.
The book starts out with a large (almost 50 pages) and excellent overview of materials and tools. I love it that the author takes the time to discuss numerous brands of pens, inks and papers instead of just generalizing them.
The following section focuses on ink drawing techniques. There is a good discussion of gray tones, parallel lines, value changes, hatching, cross-hatching and patterns. Then there are a few demonstrations of brush techniques such as laying a wash and using white on toned paper. Mixed media demos mixing wax crayons and acrylic with ink are also here as well as scratchboard and practice exercises.
The basic elements of drawing follow, including things like texture, shape, volume, color, rhythm and scale. Next, drawing strategies are covered. There are no projects or any step-by-step techniques per se. Rather, the author shows you examples of his artwork with advice on his approach, concepts and techniques. I recommend this book for those with some pen & ink drawing experience seeking ideas, tips and inspiration. There is a good list of suppliers in the back.
Smith's surreal images and mastery of a variety of styles make this a book to enjoy for the artwork it contains as well as the instruction it provides.
pen and ink for the elite.......2000-09-01
Most art technique books are either entirely for the sunday painter or they are so elitist, you need to be a phd to understand them. This book works on different levels so everyone can enjoy it. The sections cover materials and drawing techniques. My one qualm is some rather lame examples of art. A little too conzervative for my tastes. This is ART, not woolworths!
Customer Reviews:
A very good comic figure reference.......2003-12-18
I got this book for my son who loves to draw and will practice endlessly when he enjoys the subject. Currently he enjoys tracing drawings to *isolate* lines and get a sense of what is actually necessary to make the entire picture. Sometimes this is difficult to picture in his head but with tracing it becomes simple... It gives him the ability to learn proportion in a *real* way...
This book is quite good for what he likes to do as the drawings are of good size and highly colored. Finished drawings are interspersed with step by steps so when he wants to go from tracing to drawing he will know what steps to take to produce the results on his own.
This book focus' on bad guys so there is text on what makes a bad guy bad...and what to add visually to put that point across (yellow teeth, baggy clothes...a scowl..etc) There are female as well as male villians and the females have the *typical*...errrr.... buxom comic book body type so perhaps for young children this would be a bit much. It is the typical style tho seen in the graphic novels so if your child is truly into the art form this is a good reference.
The text is helpful but not intrusive and the style of it is informal and conversational. I think it would appeal to a young non-serious set. There is discussion of art /drawing issues in the text (proportion issues in comics... what makes male faces male and female female...shading...etc) but I wouldn't consider this a beginner book. I think there is an expectation of some drawing ability to start with.
Overall, this is a very appealing book on alot of levels. I wish it was longer and that some of the pictures were a bit bigger but these are really minor issues for me and have mostly to do with how my son uses the pictures. The quality of the paper is very nice and heavy and the color is sharp and dramatic..excellent for the subject matter. This is quite a nice book.
this is how to draw a great looking bad guy.......2001-07-22
if you have a hard time drawing out agreat looking bad guy or gal this is a book for you i have had a great deal of drawing out some really crappy bad guys but this book has helped me draw some cool bad guys so buy it
Good book, lot's of helpfull tips........2000-12-09
I own this book, and even though i'm not planning on being a comic book artist, it helps me alot with my proportions, perspective, action posese and just plain getting things right. It's also a great book for simple shading and stuff like that. only draw back is that his art isn't always ok. He's best at his comic book characters though, and it's obvious if you look at any of his other how to draw books.

An excellent compendium for intermediate artists.......2000-03-22
This book is a good follow up to How to Draw Comic Book Heroes and Villains. It touches on more subjects of making up villains, muscle structure, and other such things. This book though is not for beginners who haven't drawn before. All in all, this is a good book to have if you have already read the How to Draw Comic Book Heroes and Villains.

176 pages..........2005-08-20
I agree that these are great journals and sketchbooks. For some reason Amazon does not list the number of pages in the various Watson-Guptill sketchbooks, even though it is printed on the sticker. So this version has 176 neutral pH, nonyellowing archival-quality pages.
I've used this sketchbook all over the world.......2005-08-11
I carry a sketchbook with me at all times as I travel throughout the world. Since I discovered the Watson-Guptil sketchbook I have used it exclusively for all my travels. I just returned from a couple of weeks in the Cook Islands and my trusty sketchbook held up well. The hard cover protects the pages from smudging and this handy size is easy to carry and pack. It will even fit in the leg pockets of cargo pants and hiking shorts. The pages are acid-free and have just enough tooth to take a pencil. Highly recommended.

As a designer of embroidery designs, this one was a winner for me. I love all of the publicatins from Dover!

Great graphics, imaginative design, fabulous period reference. Outstanding in every way!
Quaint text and dynamite illustrations of original fashion.......2000-06-08
Vogue editor Diana Vreeland once said that no one in the 20th century had a greater influence on fashion than Erte, this desite the fact that he worked for a competitor, Harper's Bazaar. That's an indication of just how revolutionary his work was for the times. Working with virtually no direction to blunt his creativity, Erte published paintings and sketches of ingenious fashions that are as playful and lighthearted as they are luxurious and exquisite. He envisioned modern women (from 1915 to 1926) as goddesses, ultra-chic stars, children of nature, and totally feminine creatures to be adored and exalted. His fashions reflect this, individualistic and charming, colorful and startlingly functional. The 8 color covers and many B/W illustrations show insight into a dimension of fashion that one normally sees only on the show runways: the never-ending well of creativity brought to life by a truly inventive mind unhampered with concerns of marketability. Peruse the illustrations and notice allusions to gardens, paper-weaving, architecture, tennis, various members of the animal kingdom, ceremonial draperies, sailing ships, and flames. Dresses, coats, masks, swimming costumes, sleepwear, and gowns all ornamented with beads, fur trim, sheer draperies, corded lacings, silver embroidery, leather and straw. Practical? Not really. Mass manufacturing? Not in a million years. This is extreme fashion, the stuff of couture, such as would be worn to the salon of writers and intellectuals. Erte loved best to design for the stage, and the drama and fantasy of theater is in evidence in each ornate illustration. Although for 3 years he produced designs for Altman and Bendel in NY, most of his work was strictly conceptual, and many readers of Harper's saved covers and sketches to muse over as they would an art history volume, as evidence of another world. Ignoring fashion trends, Erte generated innovative and outre designs that still amaze and delight those of us who appreciate true originality. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in textile or fashion design, but also to graphic designers, sculptors, and those who really enjoy art for its own sake. This book is, in one word: luscious.

Unique and inspirational styles.......2007-05-18
These designs may not always be emblematic of actual clothing in the 1920's, but they represent some of the most innovative, dramatic, and stylish stuff from the era, and remain inspirational to this day. The book features a few of his more ordinary designs, but also includes "Harper's Bazar" covers, theatrical designs, and some amazing haute couture. While there are no pictures of extant costumes, this book of illustrations, quite a few in color, is beautiful, stylish, and motivating.
Great costuming source.......2006-06-09
One of the best! Truly unusual designs for creative figurative art dolls. Highly recommended.
A good example of Erte's work........2005-05-11
With this book you get a glimpse into the master's mind at the birth of Art Deco and beyond. Erte's designs flourished in the mid-20's, when the Deco age was new, but you can still sense a taste for the noveau and baroque ages in his art and gorgeous designs. Erte was a pioneer artist untill his death and anyone seeking to learn true fashion design will benefit from the vision of Erte.
Erte - Cheap Thrills!.......2003-03-02
Erte is one of the most creative designers of all times - drawing upon many cultures to create outfits that are simply gorgeous. This book is a very cheap way of studying some of his designs. Well worth the price!
Book Description
Fan-bearing slave girl, worshipper of Horus, wife of a Russian boyar, and 46 other costumes (1911–75). 49 plates in full color. Captions.
Customer Reviews:
For Erte, costume design was just another form of high art.......2002-11-20
The Russian born fashion and costume designer Romaine de Tirtoff was known as Erte for the simple reason that was the French pronunciation of his initials "R.T." Erte was one of the most prodigious designers of the twentieth century, known for his colorful and audacious Art Deco designs. Even if you do not recall his name, I bet your remember having seen his work before. "Erte's Theatrical Costumes in Full Color" offers 49 plates from 1911 to 1975, with captions, of the work Erte did for theatrical productions, where his imagination was most unfettered and where his popularity lasted considerably longer than it did in the real world of high fashion. Erte was designing costumes for Mata Hari way back in 1913 and was still designing costumes and sets for a production of the opera "Der Rosenkavalier" in 1980. From a worshipper of Horus and the wife of Russian boyar to Aladdin and Faust, Erte displayed a wide array of exotic and historical styles in his dazzling costumes. The only real complaint with this collection is that there are only 49 gorgeous plates of some of his most stunning creations.
