Book Description
EVERYONE IN Angels on Toast is on the make: Lou Donovan, the entrepeneur who ricochets frantically between his well-connected current wife, his disreputable ex, and his dangerously greedy mistress; Trina Kameray, the exotic adventuress whose job title is as phony as her accent; T.V. Truesdale, the man with the aristocratic manner, the fourteen-dollar suit, and the hyperactive eye for the main chance. A dizzyingly fast-paced and deliriously entertaining novel.
"For decades Dawn Powell was always just on the verge of ceasing to be a cult and becoming a major religion."

Insider Rediscovery.......2004-03-30
Gore Vidal's friendship with Dawn Powell explains the re-publication of several of her novels. It isn't because she is an unheralded Hemingway or Fitzgerald.
I didn't feel like I wasted my time reading "Angel on Toast," but I found the characters poorly differentiated so I often had to struggle to determine if I was reading about Lou Donovan and Jay Oliver, the hard drinking and womanizing main characters.
One of the reasons I read the novel was to get a feel for New York in the thirties and forties. However, much of the action took place elsewhere and I didn't get a strong feel of place except for the Hotel Ellery and the marginalized old ladies of the Bar and Grill.
In general, the novel feels like a few well-etched scenes only marginally connected by often vague characters. The well-etched scenes often display an insightful feel for the complexity of relationships in a time when the mass media was busy promoting a "Thin Man" view of hard-drinking but happily married couples.
There is something intriguing about Dawn Powell and her milieu. The good moments of this book give me hope that "The Golden Spur" or one of the other re-published novels will prove more satisfying.
A Satire of Business.......2003-01-28
Dawn Powell published "Angels on Toast" in 1940 to generally favorable reviews but poor sales. She rewrote the book, shortening and softening its satire, in 1956 under the title "A Man's Affair". She also wrote a TV script based on the book called "You should have brought your mink". The book has been reissued several times, all in the original 1940 version.
When the book first appeared, the critic Diana Trilling wrote a negative review. She observed that Powell was a writer of great gifts and style who, in "Angels on Toast", had wasted her talents on utterly frivolous, valueless people and scenes. On reading the book, I can understand Trilling's reaction. The book isn't one of Powell's best, but its scenes are sharply-etched and entertaining. As I have frequently found in Powell's novels, the book works better in parts than as a whole, even though the story line of "Angels on Toast" is generally clear and coherent.
The story is basically a satire of American business in the later 1930s with the scene shifting back and forth from Chicago to New York City. The two main protagonists are businessmen, Lou Donovan and his best friend, a less successful businessman named Jay Oliver. The two characters are pretty well differentiated from each other although both remain one-dimensional. The activities of Lou and Jay can be summarized in three terms: moneymaking, drinking and wenching. As are virtually all the characters in the book, Lou and Jay are out for the main chance in their endless trips to New York. They engage in unending bouts of hard drinking. Their sexual affairs, and the deceits they paractice on their wives and mistresses take up at least as much time as the business and the booze. Jay's mistreess is a woman named Elsie while Lou is involved with a mysterious woman named Trina Kameray. Both give just as good as they get. It is difficult to think of a book where the entire cast of characters are crass, materialistic, on the make, without sense of value. Powell portrays them sharply.
I found the book less successful than Powell's other New York novels. I think this is because the book satirizes American business and Powell clearly has less sympathy with business than she does with the subjects of her satire in her other novels. Her other books generally deal with dissilusioned wannabe artists in Grenwich Village, with writers, nightclub entertainers, frustrated musicians, and writers resisting the tide of commercialism. Powell has knowledge of the lives of such people and sympathy with at least some of their ideals. This gives a touch of ambivalence and poignancy to the satire. But in "Angels on Toast", she shows no real knowledge and no sympathy to the world of business. This, I think, makes the satire shrill and too one-sided. Also, the business world is satirized in essentially the same terms as the various components of New York society Powell satirizes in her other books -- i.e. the characters are egotistical in the extreme, heavy drinkers (always), and sexually promiscuous and unfaithful.
Some of the individual scenes in the book are well-done. In particular, I enjoyed Powell's descriptions of a fading old New York Hotel, called the Ellery and its guests and the patrons at its bar. There are a few good scenes of train travel in the 1930's, and much sharp, punchy dialogue. The book held my interest.
The characters are crass and one-dimensional. Powell refers to some of her minor characters repeatedly by offensive nicknames such as "the snit", "the floozie" and "the punk", which certainly don't show much attempt at a sympathetic understanding of people. The book is sharp, cutting, and more so that Powell's other books, overwhelmingly negative towards its protagonists.
This book has its moments. The writing style and the details are enjoyable, but the satire is too one-dimensional and heavy-handed. Although the book is worth knowing, it is one of Dawn Powell's lesser efforts.
Burned to a crisp!.......1999-09-16
Yet another example of Ms. Powell's scathing wit at play. The Angels in question are real Devils and whomever gets caught in their circle gets burned to a crisp. This is a witty tale of New York businessmen on the make, trying EVERY trick they know not to "rock the boat" with thier wives. Very entertaining read as you go along with these two rascals through their adventures. You will end up despising and envying them for all they get away with!
In the Company of Men.......1997-08-19
The camera rarely stops moving in this deftly wry tale of two self-serving businessmen and the wives and mistresses who continually trip them up. The narrative could easily have remained soap opera material were it not for Ms. Powell's generous eye for detail. The subtext splits the characters' heads wide open, and inside we find that the basic humanity of these big shots, bohemians, socialites and freaks goes all the way down to the well. Not quite comedy, not quite melodrama, not quite satire, not quite sure. Ms. Powell is a master at broadening emotional context with her scathing, loving wit. Preston Sturges would surely have been charmed

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Fun Book.......2007-09-29
It was kind of hard for me to start this book but found it gets better the more you read as the dogs progress in their journey across the countryside. In a way I almost liked it better than Adams's Watership Down as you really feel so sad for the dogs in how mankind has turned against them (I am sure dog owners will really understand this).
I have an edition that was printed in Great Britain so it was hard to understand some of the dialect without explanation (as Adams explains it a bit in the American printed version's preface). It wasn't until the middle of the book while looking at one of the map pictures that I found out "the tod" is a fox. Great book!
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Prefer experiments on rodents, thanks.
Like in Watership Down, the animals are the main characters from a point of view perspective in this novel. For a recent techno take on this see We3, for example. Here, the dogs are just being experimented on, not being made into weapons.
When they escape, they have to forage to survive, and get help from a fox. One of the animals is a bit brain damaged from what has been done to him at the vivisection lab.
The title comes from the fact that a reporter of the less than ethical variety spreads the story that the animals are infected, as a cover.
Misunderstood: Victim of Amateur Readers.......2007-08-02
**DO NOT READ THIS BOOK IF YOU EXPECT AN EASY-CHILD DEVELOPED SCHEME**
**DO NOT READ THIS BOOK IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT ANALYSIS AND ATTENTION MEAN**
I think many people that have reviewed about this book (and that have obviously read it) in a negative way started reading "The Plague Dogs" when they saw "Watership Down successor" in the cover page. That was their first mistake. The Plague Dogs is ANOTHER book, nothing to do with bunnies and not as a real attempt of a classic or a "successor", those words are an editorial strategy to summon people to read the book.
Second mistake: You read Watership Down BEFORE The Plague Dogs, thus, you were expecting something similar or you were making up your own story before even starting to read the book, just because you thought you knew the author's style. Once again: IT'S ANOTHER BOOK. Flush the bunnies out of your mind and start from 0 again.
In reality, this is one of the best books I have ever read, and I can't say the same of 'Watership Down'. "The Pague Dogs" is usually seen under the fake idea (besides the ones I already wrote) of having an "animal protection" or "no animal testing" goal. It doesn't. Of course it promotes not harming animals, and the very same stroy makes you hate all scientists that mess with doggies, but it is not the author's goal, there are many more EASIER ways to stand against animal abuse without taking the time to do a story like this one, specially not as deep and profound.
People usually think it's tedious and boring, with complex words and a lot of poetic sense, so they don't really pay attention to what they're actually reading. They don't notice that "The Plague Dogs" is about many "human" issues, and it plays with very serious situations BESIDES animal abuse and testing. It touches very sensitive spots of psychology, such as guilt, trauma, suicide, family ethics and even racism. It also contains social weak spots, such as sensationalist media, panic disorder and poor government efficiency.
Whoever read this book and didn't notice anything special besides a "no animal testing" message, should go back and read it again, but with a more open mind about the details and other "unnecessary" information. You should also try to read beyond the letters: try to read it under a strict eye and ask yourself questions. Everything in the story, even the first pages that don't seem so special, have a lot to do with what comes next.
About the ending... It is a masterpiece of language, poetry and sintaxis: it is perfect in that way, but I do have to accept that it kinda' broke all the tragedy of the book, and I don't mean the "invasion" of characters in the last pages. That was fine, actually, it was in those pages where racism is handled in a very sutile way, as well as other important topics. But the END, the happily ever after end. Yeah, it might be open to opinions, but it didn't really left a door open to a sad ending.
I was happy, though, to see that the movie (the uncut movie) had a better ending, in fact, I saw the movie before reading the book. I think that if the book had the movie ending, it would have been an EXCELENT-EXCELENT book, but sadly it is just EXCELENT. I also highly recommend the uncut movie to adults, NO CHILDREN.
AWESOME BOOK.......2007-05-05
Wow! I love this book! I am thirteen and I picked this book to do for a book report at school. Yes, the beginning is a bit hard to read through, and he does write a lot of seemingly useless, long, boring paragraphs, but it is so worth it to get this book. The characters are great. Gotta love that Snitter.. The language used is a little hard to understand, but you'll get the basic idea if you try a little. oh, and don't listen to those review-ers who are saying that it is too boring to read. Most of them said they only read about 10 pages! Perservere!! (haha) I look forward to watching the movie, although I hear its pretty depressing. Ah well. READ THIS BOOK!
Like "Black Beauty" for dogs.......2006-07-31
The first 70 pages of this book were nearly insufferable. I did not want to finish this book. Nothing made sense!!! Slowly . . . Adams started to explain why everything had occured. To me, this is a little backwards, but, if you can get past the first 70 pages, this book is really excellent. It raises all sorts of questions about animal rights and the ethics of animal expirmentation. Hence my comparison to "Black Beauty". Both Snitter, and Rowf, the dog characters are very compelling. Even though I read the toned down American version, the tod's language is a bit hard, at first to comprehend, but if you get into it, it gets easier. I think, if I were the editor, I would have cut out a bit of Adam's ramblings, but all in all, this is a beautiful piece of work. There is lots of action, plot twists and characters that are good, bad and in between. I still prefer Watership Down, but I would definetly add this to my list of great books. I think that this would be an excellent book for discussion in high school and college. It really makes you think!

A good read for all.......1999-05-04
The back cover of this book states, "His (i.e., the author's) rare inside look into politics and the science within public bureaucracies will engross those interested in science, public health issues, pet owners and wildlife enthusiasts, and those fascinated by infectious disease threats". This statement is true. Actually it is a 'good read' for anyone and falls into the same ilk (though not necessarily so good) as Watson and Crick's "Double Helix". For those interested in pure entertainment, the book makes good bedtime reading for the general public and scientist alike. In fact, this true story has enough human interest, petty personal politics, good guys and not so good guys, and institutional politics to have the makings of a politics/science soap opera. For those wanting to be informed or educated the book gives a good view as to how public health officials, both competent and incompetent, approach the control of a disease outbreak, whether it be real or potential. It is also instructive in general terms because it illustrates how political influence can interfere with proper public health measures. This should provide the general public with some insight into how disease control processes can be blocked by becoming political footballs (ala AIDS) which is, in itself, a significant contribution to having an informed public. Finally, for those interested in wildlife disease, especially beginning wildlife epidemiologists and managers, there is a concise history of wildlife rabies in North America and the means that have been used to control it. The book could be used as an introduction to wildlife disease courses because it touches or raises indirectly all of the problems that one encounters in the control and study of disease in wildlife, e.g., proper sampling, population estimates, and the effects of home range and animal transport on these, to name a few. However, the efficacy of the book as a source of scientific information would have been enhanced if the passages referring to epidemiological and scientific issues had been more expansive. In some instances, these issues were merely mentioned in passing. However this is not a major deficiency since it was not the intention of the author to produce a textbook. As a reader, the major negative of the book was that there were areas of repetition (intentional or poor editing?) and sometimes the author seemed to use chronology as an organizing principle and at others he used topics. The latter has resulted in some confusion, but perhaps this approach was necessary because of the difficult task of drawing a number of disparate events and personalities together into a common plot theme, not unlike an Inspector Frost, or P. D. James mystery.

Book Description
Brind, who was raised with Sir Edmund's pack of hunting dogs, is the huntsman of Dowe Manor. Together with his best friend, the mastiff Glaive, and the rest of the pack, he protects Sir Edmund, Lady Beatrice, and their foster daughter, Aurélie.
But suddenly a tragedy strikes, one that Brind cannot prevent. In a fit of grief, Sir Edmund throws Brind, Glaive, and Aurélie—and her puppy, Gabion—out of the manor. Everywhere they turn, the vicious and lethal Black Death closely follows, as though they are bringing it with them. Can they evade this invisible enemy, as well as the angry mobs, the rogue soldiers, and the other sinister figures now threatening them? Glaive and Gabion—born to hunt, not to be hunted—may be their only chance for survival. Plague-bringers or not, Brind and Aurélie will never stop fighting to keep themselves—and their small family—alive.
