Book Description
This visionary first novel by the Booker Prize-winning author of To the Wedding and G. is at once a gripping intellectual and moral detective story and a book whose aesthetic insights make it a companion piece to John Berger's great works of art criticism.

A Writer of Our Time.......2004-10-08
Berger's luminous intelligence, his passion, his capacity to imagine, is one of the joys of my life. That he wrote,'A Painter on Our Time' in the mid 1950s reveals his prodigal vision ( a moment, incidentally, when he made the crucial career decision to opt for writing over painting, on the basis that he could reach further & more powerfully in print). Odd, for me, that I have so recently come to this, his initial, published work.It is as prescient as ever; the dilemna of the creative stirrings in a being, the dilemna between art & life, searchingly and exactingly laid out in the journals of his fictional, Hungarian, self-exiled painter. His social conscience, his memory, his ambitions are convincingly unpacked, and with the narrator as guide and amplifier to these confessions, we journey to where we know from the books early pages,Lavin's return to tumultuous Hungary. Berger wrote an afterword to the book in 1988, disclosing, amongst other things, the actual friends who inspired his fictional artist. With them he had shared the sense that pain is the source of human imagination. It is not to be avoided, refused, repressed, and regarded as undignified. In mid-career, Berger opted out of the hurly burly of the English media to embrace the underprivileged peasant lives of a small, French mountain community, from where he has written about their lives with the penetrating sympathy he demonstrated in his fictional Hungarian.
A Feast for the Mind.......2002-07-30
"A Painter of Our Time" is one of the most thought-provoking novels I have read. It contains many insightful reflections on art, philosophy, and politics. In addition, the international setting and the unexplained disappearance of the principal character at the beginning of the story combine to generate the kind of suspense that is characteristic of a classic mystery by Graham Greene. The ambiguities do not end there. A dialectical tension between art and politics, between representational art and abstract art, and between Marxist politics and bourgeois politics is sustained throughout the novel. If the principal character has, in fact, returned to his homeland to join the political struggle there, it is not at all clear which side of the struggle he has joined. The philosophical underpinnings of the book might be better appreciated by a reader who is already familiar with "Ways of Seeing" or other nonfiction books by the same author. But it is not necessary to have a background in philosophy or art theory to enjoy the story. The visual qualities of the book alone would make it an excellent candidate for an award-winning film if it were not for the anti-intellectual prejudice of the American film audience. Although such a film would undoubtedly be a commercial success in Europe, the absence of conspicuous consumption, gratuitous sex, and spectacular violence would doom it to obscurity in this country. So, don't hold your breath waiting for the film to arrive. Read the book.
The Only Good Novel About Artists.......1999-10-25
As a fine artist, I find few things more laughable than the manner in which people in my profession are depicted by writers. How romantic it all sounds! To live in pain for the love of art, expressing one's exotic soul, only to eventually to disintegrate and die in obscurity.
The reality to living as an artist is rather more prosaic than what the writers tell us. The issues an artist faces to produce artwork are far less emotional than what the layman would believe.
Here, for the first -- and as far as I know -- the only time, is a novel which accurately reflects the lifestyle and technical considerations of the typical working artist: a highly skilled professional without a "name". This book says it all.
And it says it with great finesse. Beyond its veracity to the profession, Painter of Our Time is both a well written story and compelling character study of an aging man in a less than perfect marriage.
The one exotic aspect to the story's main character, is that he is a politically committed hungarian refugee living in post-war London. Written in the form of a journal, the artist is haunted by the memory of a dead friend, as he struggles with low income and an indifferent wife.
Some readers may have a problem with the book's heavy emphasis on old school communist doctrine (as I did), but if you can get past this, you will find this a thoroughly absorbing, thoroughly accurate work about what it means to be an artist.
Art, painting, echoes of the past that won't go away........1999-07-13
Berger is a new writer for me, and so far (this book and one other), a treat. I have only a general knowledge of the well-known painters, but found the interpretive sections interesting and generally accessible for an interested layman - sufficiently so that I believe I will tackle some of Berger's art essays next.
Besides the observations on painting, A Painter of Our Time interests as a character study, in its examination of the relationship of each of us to his past, and the question of how well we know each other. A small, quiet gem, it rings true throughout - especially as a first novel. I wouldn't say I couldn't put it down, but I didn't want to.

A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

Absolutely Fantastic!!!.......2007-07-05
I have been reading Forgotten Realms books since it's inception, and "The City Of Ravens" book is definitely one of the best! I am really hoping we will be seeing more of Jack in the near future!
Excellent stand alone adventure!.......2006-11-05
Excellent story, a must for all fan of this incredible world. Allows you to discover a city that you might not know and even from there, gives you a way to rediscover a city maybe forgotten for some others.
Surprisingly good........2006-02-27
Let's be honest, books like these are modern day pulp. A number of fantasy series, like "Dragonlance" and "Forgotten Realms" churn out largely anonymous, pedestrian books that are easily readable and easily forgettable. Nobody should be reading these books and looking for great literature or a lot of originality. Books like these function best as a few hours of pleasant, diverting reading for those who enjoy fantasy and have a passing familiarity with Forgotten Realms.
This book is not different. However, I am somewhat surprised because the book is written a bit smarter and in general is better executed than many of its peers.
Jack Ravenwild is a thief and ne'er-do-well with some magic abilities who has a number of odd friends: a naive noblewoman, a surly dwarf, a suspicious warrior who helps him in his schemes, and a drunken wizard. This is complicated when he is contracted by a beautiful woman who may be more then she seems (you can guarantee it) to find a magical book for her, and crosses path with a fiery Red Wizard. Also vying for his time, he must attend a ball that features a riddle with his noblewoman friend (who he is lying to, posing as a nobleman with a tragic story), finding a lost dwarven treasure, and evading the town's guards, all while hoping his allies don't tear him apart.
Predictably, Jack gets into more hairy situations and trouble than he can handle, and as the story picks up steam Jack finds himself embroiled in more plots and danger than you could reasonably expect one man, even a blackguard like Jack, could find himself in.
It's a pretty typical story, but the author adds a little more by fashioning a city that comes to life in its geography, businesses, and landmarks, and a cast full of colorful characters. It's not great literature in any way, but it's a nice read.
Fun surprising read.......2005-08-18
Thie book, City of Ravens, is part of a series of stand alone novels set in the Forgotten Realms. For those of you who are familiar with the Forgotten Realms, this book at first may seem like a rehashing of things that have come before. Yet, when you really get into the book it's much more than rehashing previous stories. It's a fun adventure with an unlikely hero. I really enjoy books where the main character has flaws and doubts and ins't all powerful, this is one of those books.
Even if you aren't familiar witht he Forgotten Realms this is a good book to test drive and see if you like the setting.
Worth reading.......2005-05-27
I enjoyed most of this book except for the last chapters. It started to get totally ridiculous and I couldn't bring myself to keep reading it. Yes, it was getting that bad! But before these chapters existed, I was having a blast reading and enjoying the book. The characters were fun and the writing done well. I greatly enjoyed the main character, Jack Ravenwild, though his last name is too over the top considering he is in the "city of ravens". Everything was put together nicely before the story started to turn unbearable. But despite my disapointment with the last portion of it, I still think it is worth reading for the good parts alone.
Book Description
"Cities are made, not born. A metropolis or town doesn't grow spontaneously, like broad-leafs in the lawn. A city is a willed artifact, embodying the evolving intent of the people who live in it as they react to specific conditions: geography and topography, climate and technology, demographics and economics, history and politics."Introduction, The Plan of Nashville
The Plan of Nashville is a community-based vision of how the urban core of Nashville should look and work in the 21st century. The purpose is to help the central city hold its place in civic life.
Since Nashville assumed a metropolitan form of governmentmerging city and countythere have been almost a hundred plans that dealt with some aspect of the center city. This plan is different.
The Plan was conceived and orchestrated by the Nashville Civic Design Center, which is committed to the practice of urban design. This three-dimensional discipline integrates streets and buildings, land use and transportationa new approach for Nashville.
As a private not-for-profit, the center listens with independent ears and speaks with an independent voice. Previous plans by Metro government departments and their consultants were constrained by politics and patronage, by available funding or the need to solve specific problems.
Another significant difference from previous plans is the area of study. The Plan of Nashville is not an island bound by the noose of the interstate loop. The Plan integrates downtown with the areas that frame it via the spoke roads that are the historic entries into downtown.
Rather than taking a top down approach, the design center organized the process of listening to the community. Over 400 citizens attended a series of workshops in downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods to express their opinions and draw their dreams. The center's staff translated the results into a series of maps and illustrations, with explanatory textthat articulate a three-dimensional vision for the city that will serve as a litmus test for current and future development.
The vision for Nashville includes:
*broad tree-lined boulevards that replace sections of the urban interstates, grand avenues into the city rather than high speed highways through it.
*the Cumberland River as a key focus, its banks treated as a prime place for recreation and residence.
*a balanced transportation system that integrates pedestrian and bike opportunities, as well as mass transit, into an infrastructure long dominated by cars.
Other elements of the Plan feature:
*a brief history focusing on the forces that sculpted the form that Nashville has taken.
*urban design guidelines and policy recommendations as tools to shape future development.
*an explanation of the process that produced the Plan.
"Right now in Nashville, when a project is proposed for a certain site, all we know we're giving up is what's there now," Schimmenti explains. "By comparing proposal with Plan, the community is able to see what they are giving up for the future, not just the present. And potential investors are able to see, not just what the city is, but what it wants to be."

Unusual but Awesome!.......2007-10-08
A little about me: I never take anything I read as gospel. I am not a "pagan" and I do not identify myself with any particular path. I'm a wandering mystic. I just kind of read everything and take what rings truth in me and assimilate it into my personal belief structure.
This book fills a very real need in mystical literature for people like me. I am the sort of person who generally prefers cities over the country (although I do enjoy returning to nature occasionally) and so it is hard for me to connect with very nature oriented pagan literature. When you spend most of your days walking around a city, full of concrete, alley ways, faces, and buildings you don't often run into a babbling brook, or a natural clearing of trees, or a patch of clover. It's just a different world and Raven Kaldera expertly shows that spirituality can be found anywhere, even in a dirty alleyway when Skram whispers in your ear and you notice a shadowy figure a ways away and suddenly feel you should be elsewhere. Why can't cockroaches and squirrels and pigeons be totem animals? Some of my friends respect this book merely due to how perfectly his description of the squirel totem person fits me. LOL
This is not for the average tree-hugging dirt worshiping hippie nature child pagan. This is for those of us who just march to the beat of our own drummer and find spirituality EVERYWHERE we go, not just in the places you'd expect to find it.
Give this book a chance. Seriously. This guy has some fantastic ideas even if you don't adopt his beliefs in rote.
I am a modern Satanist........2006-12-18
After reading this book I have found that much of the content applies to ideas such a the ones expressed in the Satanic Bible. If you do not know, Modern LaVeyan Satanism originated from Paganism so there is definatly major similarities. I enjoyed this book and thought it was a good read especially for a Modern Satanist. I am eager to start combining the 2 religions with this book. I have conducted many rituals involving transfer of energy for ones good fortune and have been successful everytime so these are some new ideas that I am willing to try. By the way this is not only for people living in big cities like new york, it has instructions on what to do in place more rural outside the city limits as well.
A little cheesy, but overall good.......2006-11-10
I snapped this book up because it looked like just the sort of book for me: adapting to life outside the woods and learning to practice witchcraft in my apartment instead of expansive backyard. I was pleased with the amount of useful information, such as affordable herbs and materials for spellwork. I was also fascinated by the chart on the magical significance of piercings.
Like any book on witchcraft, though, Urban Primitive isn't without its fair share of cheese. The Urban Triple Goddess and God kind of threw me for a loop, as did their continuous praise of trashpicking. Pagans already get a bad rap as it is; we don't need to add "dumpster divers" to our reputation!
If you ignore the goofy bits, though, this book is really useful. It gives advice on the practical things in life: finding and keeping a job/apartment/car/etc, protection from the chaotic energy of a populous city, even working around roommates and close neighbors. Definitely a good investment for your pagan reading collection - just remember to take some of it with a grain of salt.
Love the cover art, loathe the content..........2006-11-08
I am one of those fortunate Pagans who is blessed to live in a more natural setting than I used to, but having lived in the city, I did at least expect some creative insight from this book. And was most sadly disappointed.
The perspective on the Goddess leaves much to be desired. Referring to her three aspects as 'Squat, Skor & Scram' is not only gaggingly juvenile, it's completely disrespectful. The God's aspects are similarly insulted as they have been renamed, 'Slick, Screw and Sarge'.
I'm leaning toward more Traditional Witchcraft these days, but I'm always interesting in learning about a new perspective and do enjoy the diversity of the different Pagan traditions. Also, the cover art for this book really makes an impression. Unfortunately, the content does not fulfill the promise of perspective implied by the cover. Yes, there are sections about piercings, tattoos and other modern/urban activities, but the actual practice (using the term loosely, of course), seems empty and - for lack of a better term - FLUFFY. Like another reviewer, I wondered if some of the content was meant to be taken as humor. It came off as more 'bad joke' than good witchcraft. Humor as written by a 15 year old dull-normal.
Then there's the altar set-up with the toy car...oy vey. To place a replica of one's car on the altar for protection energy is a great idea, but to also put gasoline, antifreeze, etc. is lame and completely dangerous, especially considering that candles and incense are also placed there.
In order for Pagans to practice a nature religion in an urban setting we do not need to resort to fluff like this. It insults the Goddess & God and cheapens (and could quite possibly damage) our environment(s). I'd suggest instead finding a nice quiet grassy area in which to sit and meditate or setting up a small indoor garden. Even a jog through the park can be a natural, spiritual and uplifting experience. There are lots of ways to commune with nature in an urban setting. Challenge yourself to find your own unique path and style.
Save your money. Even at a discount this book is overpriced.
Good for city dwelling solitaires.......2006-10-07
Someone commented that you can't just make up dieties. Our ancestors made up their deities to explain their world. If they lived in concrete jungles like we do, who's to say they wouldn't have worshiped Skor. We all worship who ever and in what ever way makes sense and feels right to us. This book helped me connect to the spiritual a lot more than the high ceremonial structured rituals of Buckland. Yeah the names of the triple dieties are a little strange and perhaps the offerings are not quite what the Covenant of the Goddess would find "appropriate" but not all of us have access to the right herbs or robes or chalices. Some of us need reminders that it doesn't matter what we use to practice our magic, it's in the intention.
This book is written by real people, living in the real world, working real magic. And as a witch living in the city, I can relate much more to this than just about any other. Scott Cunningham even said it doesn't matter what tools you use, a butter knife can make an excellent athame. Tannin & Raven are just following that philosophy. Anyone who thinks this is silly should get off their moral high horse and "practice what they preach".
An it harm none, do what you will.

NOT good for experienced DMs in a 3e campaign!!.......2003-06-05
Just so you know, if you're buying this book to use in a d20 city campaign, you might as well save your money.
First, there's absolutely no statistics for any NPCs save their race, class, and level (ooh, thanks for all the help!).
Second, there's not hooks, twists, story lines, miniadventures or anything! What the . . . what player wants to sit and listen to a 3-page history of Foreign District?!
Where's the building maps?! Don't expect any here!
One good thing, though, it did have a nice walkthrough of the entire city included on the large, full-color map that comes with it.
To summarize, do NOT get this book thinking you're getting something that you can simply piece together with your own ideas. In order to make a worthwhile campaign, you're going to have to devote a lot of time and energy to maps, NPCs, and twists that, in my opinion, should have been included in an accessory such as this.
If you have time to do this, that's great! If you're studying for the Bar Exam in July like I am and don't have 5 hours a day to devote to making a decent adventure, don't get it!

Exhaustive overview, without limiting possibilities.......2000-06-09
At last - the authoritative text on the irresistibly alluring City of Ravens Bluff! Drawing on the famous LC modules, and the best creative writings of the players and DMs who have participated in the RPGA over the past decade, Ed Greenwood creates an unbelievably detailed and fascinating look at the best-developed city in the Forgotten Realms. Even Waterdeep pales in the shadow of this intricate work! This huge compendium is 160 pages, in microscopic print - you'll literally need a magnifier if you plan on reading much of this in one sitting. In the back is a glorious full-color poster, unveiling an entire world of adventure. If you've been looking for an exciting new setting from which to base your next adventuring campaign, look no further - this city is as detailed and fascinating as Greyhawk itself, which makes it one of the best urban settings of all time, for any game!
Raven's Bluff - Splendid AD&D Setting!.......2000-02-16
Okay, so I actually like a recent TSR publication, and why not? It is a well written tome filled with skads of detail of a place that has until recently been the purview of the RPGA. Greenwood does an excellent job in detailing the city-and most importantly, the families of note complete with histories! Wow! Best of all, it isn't overly replete with characters who made pacts with every god and major demon lord to get where they are. Aside from Greenwood's obsession with mages and the fact that there are just too darn many of them to be found anywhere in the Realms, Raven's Bluff is an ideal book to base a series of adventures, but I wouldn't run a campaign in it. It could have done with a better thieves guild, but other than that, this is well written book, and it's layout and maps are extremely well done. Well worth the money.
cool book.......1999-07-15
never having played on toril this book was a real pleaser. it opened up a different part of faerun that has, in the past, been limited to those belonging to rpga. lots of info, history and cool stuff. is it obvious yet that i like the book?
