I found the advice pretty solid in this book. For actual stories and ideas I preferred The Romantic's Guide to Popping the Question by Michael Webb.

Updike's eighth novel, subtitled "A Romance" because, he says, "People don't act like that any more," centers on the love affair of a married couple in the Connecticut of 1962. Unfortunately, this is a couple whose members are married to other people. Suburban infidelity is familiar territory by now, but nobody knows it as well as Updike, and the book is written with the author's characteristic poetic sensibility and sly wit.
Book Description
"It is, quite simply, Updike's best novel yet." NEWSWEEK
A deftly satirical portrait of life and love in a suburban town as only Updike can paint it.

Couples Reheated.......2007-01-01
I'm not sure if "Couples" or "Marry Me" came out first, but I'd already read Updike's "Couples" and so "Marry Me" seemed like almost the exact same story except with fewer couples. One of my complaints with "Couples" was that there were so many characters it required a scorecard to keep track, so at least Updike simplifies it in "Marry Me" with only two couples.
The plot of the story is that Jerry and Sally are having an affair on their respective spouses, who have had an affair with each other previously that no one else knows about. When Jerry reveals the affair, his wife asks him to stay with her for the summer, which makes a miserable time for all. I won't say how it ends, although the last chapter kind of confused me as to how it ended anyway.
At any rate, this book as I've mentioned above is similar to "Couples" in that it takes place in the early '60s in a small eastern town, features couples cheating, and does not have a particularly happy view of humanity. It features Updike's great writing, but it doesn't cover any new ground. The reason I give it three stars is because while the writing may be terrific, it isn't saying anything that's NEW. If you decide to purchase and read this book, understand that you're getting a well-written book, but not one that is much different than "Couples" or John Irving's "158-Pound Marriage" or a host of other books about people cheating on each other.
That is all.
The perils of marriage.......2002-02-28
A story of the trials and tribulations of two middle-class married couples, told in minute detail by Updike.
I should have thought that this novel would be of interest primarily to readers who are themselves either married or in a close relationship, perhaps as a cautionary tale. It's interest to single people (ie like me) might be less, or thinking about it, might be again as a cautionary tale - but this time as a warning of the perils of marriage!
I found that the book was well-written (Updike is a skilled novelist) but the characters lacked real passion and even anger, given the problems they were confronting. I refected that perhaps that might have been part of the message Updike intended to impart: that infidelity and deceit are an integral part of the modern marital experience, to be expected and dealt with as such. If so, it's a pretty depressing message.
Updike is the Expert of American Soul.......2001-10-05
An expert of marriage institute, exploring the deepest fears, anxieties. Very painful but necessary catarsis reading. Loved Updike from the very first book of stories I have read for his sad, thought-provoking writing, because the world is not like in a commercial, bright and beautiful, it is dark, sometimes ugly and painful. Interesting to see the USA: America where marriage is ideologically the center, but it is crashing under the cover of neat two-storey houses. "Marry Me" is a very Updike book that should be read for us to see our sufferings put in precise words.
I hope this isn't typical Updike.......2001-07-23
The only Updike I've read, and what a struggle. A book where nothing happens. there's a car crash. That's the big excitement of the book. The characters are totally incapable of making a decision, and when they almost make a decision they can't stick with it. After that happens about the sixth time, I started feeling really cynical toward this book. And then Updike proceeds to analyze his characters to death, pontificating about life, love and everything in between, only it has no relevence to the so-called story or to the characters who don't act in any way as the author describes. Fact is they don't act at all.
I'd rather read a book where the character act, even if its rashly, even it gets them into trouble -- I don't want to read a book with a bunch of whiny, spoiled, middle-class cowards.
The writing ranges from ponderous to lyrical, but the story is flat. What good is a decent writing style when its applied to such trash? I hope this was an experiment on Updike's part, and not typical of his work. I'm not too enthusastic to try another of his books any time soon.
Beautiful dialogue.......1997-07-30
This is my second Updike novel and I loved it. The story is typically Updike, with adulterous themes and enchanting prose. It's a story about a man struggling to decide which of two women in his life will make him happiest. One of the women is his wife, the other is his married neighbor.
The characters are strong people who at times seem deeply moved by their circumstances, and at other times surprisingly passe. Updike is great at making the reader feel what the characters feel. I was angry, guilty, hurt and amused throughout this novel.
I recommend this book highly

A wonderful read!.......2003-09-02
Dr. Brynna Shaw doesn't do anything spur of the moment. She thinks things through. But there was no thinking when Devlin Holmes walked into her life. That might explain why she was married to him a few short days later. But as the saying goes, marry in haste, repent in leisure. Eight month's after the I-do's, Brynna's wondering if she made the biggest mistake of her life. Does she have enough with Devlin to ride out some mighty rough waters?
Cheryl St. John gets to the heart of Brynna and Devlin's emotions, the heart of the story...and what the reader finds is a whole lot of love! A wonderful read!
Another Hit Story - 5+ Stars!.......2003-08-23

A sure-fire, guaranteed heart-pleaser!.......1999-02-25
One very run-down diner and three beautiful, independent sisters. Sounds like the makings for a perfect romance, doesn't it? Beloved romance author Judy Christenberry sets hearts aflutter again with her new "Lucky Charm Sisters" series by Silhouette. In her vivacious style, Christenberry acquaints her readers with the plucky O'Connor sisters and the tiny converted-trolley car/diner, called The Lucky Charm, that binds their lives together. In the first edition, "Marry Me, Kate," (Silhouette, Jan.) Kate O'Connor (the red-headed eldest sister) is desperately trying to revive her late father's luck at The Lucky Charm diner by converting it into a catering business. Only one problem stands in the way of her dreams: money. Desperate, she appeals to wealthy socialite businessman Wil Hardison for assistance in the form of a business grant. But Wil has a better idea. All Kate has to do is marry him, in name only, for one year, and he will make sure her business is a success. Sounds like a great deal on paper. But what happens if one of them should happen to fall in love? The "Lucky Charm Sisters" are a charmingly delightful series from a delightfully charming author, and one of my favorite people. Judy Christenberry's romances are sure-fire, guaranteed heart-pleasers.

I just not feelin' it.......2007-08-10
I just have to say that this book was WACK ON ALL LEVELS!!!! I do not know where the author got his degree from, but it seemed like maybe he picked it up at the local pawn shop somewhere. His english and grammar were nonexistant throughout the entire so called book. I wish I could give this book a -5 star rating.
IS IT ME?.......2007-08-10
I thought this book was absolutely horrible. I am an avid reader and did not find this book in the least bit entertaining or realistic. There were character mix ups, several inconsistencies, and writing in repetitive form. Oh, and did I mention the poor editing? Several words were capitalized that should not have been and words that should have been were not. I don't think Mr. Lowery even proof read his book.
I don't think it's necessary to "self advertise" in novels and find it a turn off. Unfortunately, Mr. Lowery did so several times which makes me not want to pick up another publication by this author. I was extremely disappointed with this novel.
How interesting this turned out.......2007-04-29
This book had so many twists and turns that I found to be smashing. By the title of the book I tried to figure out what it was about before reading. Man, was I wrong. I read this book overnight, and start reading it again the next day to make sure I didn't leave anything out. I found some parts to be a litta boring, but the majority was very interest and kept me wondering.
Excellent!!!.......2005-08-02
I could not put this book down. If you want to read a steamy novel with a little mystery and a wicked plot twist...this book is for you. I can hardly wait for the next book!!!
Get Ready For The Ride.......2005-05-18
Darrin Lowery-Smith does his best to give readers an original, suspenseful, page turning book.
Divorce Him, Marry me is what Derrick tells Rose, an older and very married woman. Derrick and Rose are occasional classmates at University of Chicago, both working toward their masters. Derrick falls madly in love with Rose and can't stop fantasizing about her even though he knows it is wrong.
Rose is married to Michael and very faithful, but wants her own independence. She goes back to school against his will hoping to not only gain control of her life, but to let Michael know he can no longer tell her what to do. He hasn't been paying her much attention anyway, so why try and please him? It was time she started to please herself.
An argument occurs between Rose and Michael that sends her on a mini vacation to Wisconsin by herself, where she just so happens to run into Derrick. The love affair begins.
The author doesn't just stop there. He takes readers on a wild goose chase, revealing twists and turns from every angle of a dramatic situation. You WILL stay in this book until it's completed. I guarantee it. I didn't notice the character mix up that the reviewer from Rawsistaz speaks of, but did get confused on several scenes in the book. I had to read about Patricia and Kim a couple of times before I realized Kim was really Karen, and there were times throughout the book where I didn't know who was telling the story, but other than that, Divorce Him, Marry Me, was written to entertain, and that it did.

Sweet Story.......2007-05-23
I really enjoyed this book. It was incredibly sweet and Emily, the heroine, was so optimistic that the reader is caught up in believing she can do the impossible, homestead her own place in Montana.
Emily moves to Montana in the hopes of starting a new life for herself and her older sister Kate. The land she claims, however, once belonged to Jake Sullivan, who abandoned it after his wife passed away. Jake is not your typical tortured hero. He has a gruff exterior but the author doesn't make him cruel or unkind. He genuinely likes Emily but wants her off his old claim. She is living in his shack and trying to farm his once owned land. Furthermore, she has an uncanny ability to make him smile and he finds her sunny nature both frustrating and delightful.
Emily has every intention of staying the required years to claim her homestead. Things go awry, though, when her sister Kate comes for a visit. She realizes Kate would be appalled at her living alone in Montana and she creates a fictitious husband. She and Jake strike a bargain; he will masquerade as her husband if Emily leaves the homestead. Emily agrees since she cannot farm the land herself. (She tried hoeing her acres but, alas failed.) It is during her sister's visit that Emily and Jake truly discover their hidden feelings for each other. Kate is likeable even if she is a bit bossy.
The scenes flow evenly and the dialogue is exceptionally well written. In fact, the dialogue really moved the story forward. This is a well written novel with a touch of humor and a sweet love story. My one disappointment was the ending. It seemed abrupt and the epilogue was told through other people's view points and not the hero or heroine's voice.
Wonderful characters make this story sing.......2006-01-26
This was the first book that I'd tried by this author, and it's safe to say it won't be my last.
This author has done what many other seem incapable of doing: creating characters that jump into your heart and stay there. Jake is your typical hero with a wounded past, yet that doesn't make him an aloof jerk. He's instantly likeable. And Emily is a ray of pure sunshine without being too syrupy sweet or annoying. And beneath that sunny exterior is another person in need of true love. It's not only the main characters that will appeal to readers, though. Even the secondary characters, like Emily's sister Kate, are ones you feel you know by the end of the book.
This historical romance was well researched, and the details woven into the background of the story so well that they never detracted from the romance. This book was a lovely look into the frontier life of Montana at the end of the 1800's.
The author's writing style was very pleasant and easy to read. It was not one of those books where you have to struggle to understand what the writer is trying to say. And it was full of laugh-out-loud moments, as well as the ones that touched your heart. This was a story to give you the "warm fuzzies" when you're finished reading it, yet at the same time, it's not a light piece of fluff. The struggles and fears of the characters are deeply felt by the reader.
It just goes to show that you can create an enjoyable book without having to stuff it full of gunfights and danger and villains and other such things. There is no mystery in this story, no villain dealing death hiding around the next corner. And this novel doesn't need it. This is a book about the hopes, fears, and struggles of the human heart, and if that's the kind of story you're looking for, then this is a book for you.
A good read!.......2002-12-14
This was my first book by this author and I wasn't disappointed. I loved the story between Emily and Jake and if you love a good romance that is light, humourous and witty you won't be disappointed in this story.
A Rare Jewel.......2002-07-01
This is the first time I read one of this author's books and I must say, I was lucky indeed. Its not often that I sing the praises of a romance author and rarer still that I like both the hero and heroine in the story.
The storyline may be a little familiar but the author's take on it is certainly refreshing. What struck me as noteworthy is her quirky sense of humour as it surprised me into laughing out loud more than once. For those who like a good western with lots of laughter and wonderful sensual scenes thrown in, this would be the book to read.
Kudos to Ms. Law on a fine book!
Susan Kay Law does it again!.......2002-06-22
In this second novel of the Miss Bright series, Susan Kay Law has surpassed herself than she did in Anthea's story! Susan Kay Law should be ranked right up there with Johanna Lindsey and Jude Devereaux.
As I did with Gabriel Jackson in the BAD MAN'S BRIDE, Anthea's story, I fell in love with Jake Sullivan in MARRY ME, Emily's story.
Emily Bright wanting and needing to be independent, tells her sister, Kate, who is arranging affairs after the death of her husband, that she is going to Colorado to see their sister Anthea and her husband, Gabriel. Instead she heads to Montana to claim land for who own.
After losing his first wife, he had abandoned his land claim six months ago. But now he's back, and there is a temptuously beautiful woman in his bed. He tries everything to get her to leave, waiting her out, hoping she'd leave, even offering to buy her piece out just to get her off his land.
In the midst of the arguing over the property, Emily receives a letter from Kate saying that Kate is coming to visit. Emily had written to her and told Kate she had married. Kate wanted to meet the new husband. But what husband? So she goes to Jake and begs him to pretend that they are married just until Kate leaves. He reluctantly agrees to do so, but in the process Jake falls madly in love with her, when he hadn't meant to and wants to make their pretend marriage real.
Susan Kay Law has outdone herself with the Miss Bright books. I love them!

Almost in color for a dime.......2007-04-27
I remember the displays at G.L. Perry's Dime Store featuring comics and more comics. Dells were swell, but DC was pretty good too! There was "Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen" #1, "Lois Lane #1," "Showcase" 105, to mention a few. And...I didn't have a dime... Now, they are all for sale on eBay and I still do not have the dime. But, thanks to the "Showcase Presents" series, the stories from Jimmy's first twenty-two issues, and some Lois Lane stuff, are bargain priced, albeit in black and white. The art of Curt Swan, Ray Burnley, and inker Stan Kaye make for almost 500 pages of grade A Olsen fun. Buy this, and other Showcase titles of your favorite characters before they go out of print. Also recommended for public libraries, but have them "covered up"--you know what I mean.
Disappointed.......2007-02-25
As a life-long Superman fan I had purchased the Superman in the 50's, 60's series which were excellent reproductions of the original comic book stories. When I ordered the Showcase Presents series, however, it broke my heart. Perhaps it was done to keep the price low, but all of the stories, though faithfully reproduced are in black and white, reading like newspaper comics. I couldn't help but feel cheated, thinking they really should have warned us. Somehow, it just isn't the same.
Jimmy Rocks!.......2006-09-19
So, it's mostly Jimmy Olsen stories? SWEET! I particualrly enjoy Jimmy Olsen tales, because he's a normal guy who winds up in weird situations... and he (was) Superman's pal. I especially like stories where he didn't have to resort to his signal watch to get Superman's help. (That's the easy way out!)
Everyone thinks I'm weird...
And let me say this: WHAT HAPPENED TO HAVING A FEW STORIES IN A SUPERHERO COMIC BOOK! It seems like now, they can't even put a whole story in one comic book! Remember when book-length stories were special issues? (Not really, I'm only 20, but my dad had zillions of old comics...)
Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, the Elongated Man... bring 'em all back...
Pure Insanity.......2006-04-14
To really understand this book, you have to keep in mind these stories were written at a time when the government didn't regulate what chemicals went into drinking water, pregnant women were encouraged to smoke, and doctors regularly prescribed cocaine and heroin for medicinal purposes. From that frame of reference, everything makes perfect sense. Otherwise, this book is the most ridiculous collection of stories ever printed.
The attitude you bring to the reading will determine if you find them to be sublimely stupid or... well, stupidly stupid. Personally, I laughed out loud often enough that my coworkers started checking in for regular "What beyond idiocy thing did Jimmy do now?" updates.
While the title is "Superman Family," this is a "Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen" book, with just one Lois Lane issue, rougly 20 pages out of almost 600. I'm guessing A) future volumes will focus more on "Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane" without making DC create a different title and B) the marketing folks at DC understood no one in his right mind would buy "Showcase Presents Jimmy Olsen," and were probably correct.
DC KNUCKLEHEADS DO IT AGAIN!.......2006-03-24
GREAT! Okay, I've been waiting for the Showcase Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane...BUT why together??? I love both series but the two together? This has got to be the worst that DC can do to these wonderful series! What happened to the Perry White book anyhow? LOL! I'm dying to see these as well as ATOM, Hawkman, Atomic Knights, Doom Patrol, Metal Men, Teen Titans, Blackhawk and hopefully Brave and Bold!
