Book Description
This is a presentation of and interaction among the three main views on the end times held by evangelicals: Premillennial, postmillennial, and amillennial.
Customer Reviews:
A Worthwhile Read.......2005-09-21
Three Views on the Millennium and Beyond is a beneficial read for those unfamiliar with eschatology and/or someone seeking to expand their understanding of the three millinnial theories. Somewhat more attention seems to be give to Premilliannialism as it given a longer and more comprehension evaluation. The Premillennail argument does seem to prevail within the confines of this particular book, however, as stated above it is given more attention and the general editor is premillennial as well. The book contains a great article on Amillennialism by a well qualified and very gifted theologian and most of his points are not satisfactorally refuted by either of the other writers. The Postmillenial position seems to be the weakest within this particular volume. However, the reader will receive a detailed comprehensive explanation of all three view points that is beneficial. The book successfully accomplishes its goal of presenting all three millennial views and allowing limited room for discussion amongst the writers of each school of thought.
Uneven presentation; OK discussion, but not concise.......2004-12-07
In investigating the issue of the millennium, where should you start? Ultimately, I think this book makes the wrong choices in answering this question. While the discussion is interesting at times, I can't help but feel that Darrell Bock's summary essay should have been re-worked and presented at the beginning of the work. Basically, Bock writes that one's hermeneutical approach (the prism by which one interprets Scripture) largely determines what you believe the end times looks like. Bock notes how each passage deals with eschatological texts, and what questions each feels are key to understanding the nature of Jesus' return. If he had placed this at the beginning, I think it would be more helpful to the reader. Perhaps he could have then placed another essay "wrapping things up" at the end.
Kenneth Gentry Jr. contributes the postmillennial perspective, but does a much better job critiquing the positions of the others than advancing his own case. In his own essay, he really needed to a) explain his own hermeneutical approach in a coherent and distinctive fashion, rather than use generalities, and b) take the time to formulate a detailed explanation of how postmillennialism interprets Revelation 20 (the key text). As someone who considers himself sympathetic to postmillennialism's expectation that God's Kingdom is irrestibly advancing even in this current age, I really wanted Gentry to make a solid case. After all, Jonathan Edwards (arguably the greatest American mind ever) was post-mil, so surely it's a reasonable position. Alas.
Robert Strimple presents the amillennial position and does an excellent job presenting his overall hermeneutic and understanding of key passages. Of all the essays, his is probably the best. He boldly tackles Romans 11 to explain how amillennialism understands what is usually read as regarding a future conversion of Israel (although it seems Strimple only represents a portion of amil proponents who feel that Paul is not speaking 'prophetically' here).
Craig Blaising advances the premillennial position, and does a fair job with the exegesis portion, but I agree with the reviewer below who feels that premillennial positions come in basically two varities, and that each should have been allowed to speak for itself individually. Blaising spends too much on time on the history of thought regarding the nature of the eras beyond our own, and not enough time directly discussing the hermeneutics involved in how premillenialists arrive at the premillennial understanding of Revelation 20. In fairness, he is representing both the "George Ladd" premil folks (like me), and the much more strictly literal approach dispensationalist interpreters, so he's got to couch his argument in the shared understanding of the central text.
At any rate, I recommend Stanley Grenz's The Millennial Maze instead of this book. Grenz, although he is an amil guy, is extremely fair. Each position's history and hermeneutic is discussed in concise fashion, and followed with a targeted critique. I'm not finished reading it yet, but I actually thought that in presenting postmillennialism, he made a much better argument than Kenneth Gentry did in this book. In addition, I feel like I understand dispensationalism a WHOLE lot better than I ever did.
Counterpoint Series.......2004-11-15
I'm going to apply this commentary for the entire Counterpoint Series published by Zondervan Publishing Company. My compliments to that company for creating this series. I initially purchased "Four Views on the Book of Revelation" but soon realized it was only one in a series. I got so much out of that volume, that I decided to purchase the entire set to study and keep for reference. My spiritual growth has been remarkable as a result. Seminary students and professionals would probably enjoy this series, which seems geared for them. But this series is also excellent for those college-educated laypeople who feel inclined to enhance their understanding of Christian theology. That is, with one caveat: Buy a decent theological dictionary to refer to at first. It probably won't get used much after about the third book you choose to read, but initially you will be need it to be confident of some of the terms used among advanced theologians. Then, the Counterpoint series will give you a full understanding of many different concepts and concerns of the Christian faith which have been applicable from early on until the present. I've learned a lot, and the only way I think I could do better is if I were enrolled in Seminary. A list of all the titles I am aware of from this series is:
Are Miraculous Gifts for Today?
Five Views on Law and Gospel
Five Views on Sanctification
Four Views on Hell
Four Views on Salvation in a Pluralistic World
Four Views on the Book of Revelation
Three Views on Creation and Evolution
Three Views on the Millennium and Beyond
Three Views on the Rapture
Two Views on Women in Ministry
Vapid.......2004-08-06
This debate had almost no life in it. I just don't see that much interaction between the three authors. Also, the fact that there were only three authors is problematic. Not having separate sections for Historic and Dispensational Premillenialism will certainly effect a work like this negatively. To have a Dispensationalist speak for an Historic Premillenialist ir vice versa will leave one of the views with poor representation because the presenter has no vested interst in that viewpoint (and is in fact an opponent, causing their presentation to intentionally be weak). This is certainly not the book that you want to use in a discipleship group or study. THe presentations are too weak. The way that each author approaches the discussion is far from forceful, which I feel it should be. I would suggest Meaning of the Millenium instead. But I could be wrong since there are people who've rated this work higher than the four-point. So check it out if you'd like.
A Debate That Has Lasted About Two Millennia.......2002-06-04
Three Views on the Millenium and Beyond is not a book that you should begin your studies in eschatology with. It is a rather difficult book but not impossible to work through. One needs to be at least minimally familiar with each of the positions and some of the arguments if the book is to be completely gratifying. For instance, if you are not familiar with Revelation 20, then you might as well put this book down until you have scanned it through a few times.
Nevertheless, the authors impressively articulate their positions and their reasons for believing what they do. This book will provide you with an intermediary starting place for being able to better understand each of the three positions (which are to be taken broadly since there are disagreements within each of the camps). I will not comment on who "won" the debate, partly because I am largely agnostic about it at this point (though I do favor one position). But each did provide thought-provoking arguments and responses that need to be more fully considered (at least for myself).
Darrell Bock's closing essay was helpful in pointing out both areas of agreement and disagreement. Despite his admonition of a possible bias towards premillenialism, I did not find that it was largely evident. I was also impressed to find that Robert Strimple admitted that he had changed his opinion on one section after reading another writer's argument in the book: certainly a rare case! Interestingly, the contributers would often respond with comments like, "that position is not necessarily indicative of the such and such view." Quite often, the writers agreed with eachother. But don't be fooled, for there are many disagreements as well.
Overall assessment: this book was very-well written, edifying, and educational in my eschatological studies. I recommend that others read a few books by Blaising (premil), Hendriksen or Hoekema (amil), or Gentry (postmil), prior to reading this book. That way, you will be more familiar with the terminology and the arguments. But if you are interested in the eschatology discussions, then you must read this book.
Book Description
Tragically, the daily news is filled with stories about hurtful and seemingly mystifying problems in human behavior. Each morning we face news stories about murder, suicide, drunken driving accidents, child molestation, drug abuse, gambling, criminal behavior, and so forth. The cover stories of news magazines from TIME and Newsweek to U.S. News and World Report often focus on abnormal psychology and behavior connected to these particular topics, as well as to autism, child hyperactivity, depression, eating disorders, and more. In these volumes, experts in their respective fields draw together compelling chapters on the abnormal psychology and resulting behaviors that are today most often and most dramatically at issue in our world, including such topics as "workaholism." Written with accessibility in mind, the set is intended to bridge the gap between research monographs and self-help books, to give layreaders and students solid and up to date information without having to translate jargon-heavy text. Most people today are impacted by abnormal behavior or mental illness in some way. Some suffer from their own mental disorders or live with someone who does. Others have been victimized by people experiencing abnormal psychology, including the 20% of American women and 15% of American men reporting they were sexually abused as children. Mental illness and abnormal behavior touches all of us. This set can help us cope.
Book Description
Based on a scenario by Carlo Gozzi and inspired by his original project, The Love of Three Oranges is a wild raucous slapstick comedy. A comedy in three acts. Prince Tartaglia's life is filled with misery until an evil witch and her equally evil henchmen concoct a plan to kill him by sending him on a quest for three giant oranges. This quest, however, soon proves more fruitful than he could have imagined. Once he leaves the sheltered world of the castle he finds a friend in a clown, love in an orange, and most of all laughter in everything he meets. Throw in witches, wizards, princesses, an effeminate unionized devil, a few ferocious inanimate objects, melodramatic monarchs and a wild narrator who isn't sure how far removed from the story he is and what you have in the end is a flurry of comedy, parody, and quality.

A great new version.......2004-12-23
Hillary DePiano's adaptation of The Love of Three Oranges is hilarious and fun. Better yet, it is a more accessible version that is easier for students to understand and relate to. Everyone should read this comedy.
I don't understand why Amazon is charging so much for this title. Sites like ebay, lulu.com and even the author's own website (hillarydepiano.com) all have it for under ten dollars.
A gem!.......2004-11-16
(...)Hillary Depiano's adaptation of 'For the love of three oranges' takes the reader completely by surprise, and is a little gem. In the first instance, tthe scene is set for a pseudo Shakespearean court drama with King this and Prince that, complete with snivelling courtiers. It is indeed all this, but far, far more, and is very, very funny, and on occasions, very ribald, but delightfully so. This review makes the reader want to read more, thus, this lady has cracked it, and well deserves her place on the best sellers list.
Couldn't stop laughing.......2003-12-14
It is that funny - amazing update of an old art form - thoroughly enjoyed reading it - would love to see it produced -
highly recommend
Funny Play.......2003-11-15
: My daughter was in a performance of this play a few years ago. I don't know anything about commedia dell'arte or anything about theatre history related. She is the one who knows all that. I am just Mom. ;-) Because she acts I end up seeing a lot of plays. I do know that this was one of the funniest plays I have seen in a long time. I was more entertained than I was at some Broadway shows! I laughed the entire time. It was just perfect lighthearted fare but still had some very clever story telling going on. I guess it's a compliment to the writer that I had no idea until I was told afterwards that this play was many centuries old!
Finally! An accessible version of this text!.......2003-11-05
I have been teaching this play in my high school level Drama class for quite a while and had grown just a little tired of students not reading it and insisting it was too boring and out of date. As frustrating as it was as an educator, I also couldn?t help but feel there must be a better way to present this great story without it being bogged down in jokes so old you need a footnote on every line. I began asking my colleagues if anyone knew of a better version. Several years later, I?d still had no luck. (Word to the wise, the DiGaetani version, which seems to be one of the more modern, is pretty awful. It must have lost a good deal in the translation for not only is it not that funny, but it?s also rather disjointed and poorly written.) A friend of mine had seen this play produced at Bucknell University at Lewisburg, PA in 2002 and was very impressed with that version both in terms of the story line and the comedy. She had recommended that I find out what edition that director had used. It turned out that the director had the same problem with finding a good version of the text and had decided to re-write the play herself and that her version was currently available on Amazon and BN. Once I finally had the opportunity to read this version myself I was amazed at the difference the text had in DePiano?s hands. The story line is a bit different than the original, I don?t want to say too much to give it away, but it?s taken on a sort of fractured fairy tale feeling with characters and plots gone awry. (The Speaker of the Prologue is now the Narrator and he quickly became my favorite character!) It is simply wonderful! Not only is the story engaging and the characters far better developed than in any previous version I had read, but the play is very very funny. It is a full playtext, not a scenario, and while there is still plenty of room for improvisation, there is a structure to the narrative which makes it easier to use as a text for classroom study. I handed out this version in class a few weeks ago and, for a glorious change, every last one of them not only read it this time: they loved it! A few of them have been pestering me do it as our straight play next fall! I have to admit it would be an excellent choice for not only is it a great ensemble piece, it also has many roles that could switch easily from male to female and back again (always a plus when the gender balance is skewed as it is in our school). I have never written a review on Amazon before and I apologize if I am gushing a bit, but after so long a search, it is wonderful to finally find such an accessible version of this text to teach my class! Rest assured that this is the best version of the versions out there!

Book Description
The thousand-year artistic legacy of Cambodia includes some of the world's most beautiful works of art and architecture. This richly illustrated volume, published to coincide with an exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art and the Runion des Muses Nationnaux, examines the powerful and original Khmer culture that flourished on the mainland of Southeast Asia between 600 and 1600 A.D. Centered on the northern shores of Cambodia's Great Lake, the Tonle Sap, and extending westward into eastern Thailand, the civilization reached its apogee in the early twelfth century with the construction of the Temple of Angkor. Embracing both Buddhist and Hindu traditions, the sculpture ranges from monumental works in sandstone representing gods and goddesses, guardians, female dancers, and legendary creatures, to refined ritual and ceremonial bronzes. Essays by an international group of scholars together with narrative discussions of each of the works illustrated provide a fascinating introduction to a culture that is still relatively unknown.
Customer Reviews:
Most beautiful current book on Khmer sculpture.......2001-03-11
This is a superbly produced book about ancient sculpture from the Angkor region. The photographs are wonderful and the text is well written and scholarly. If, as I do, you believe that Khmer sculpture is amongst the most beautiful ever made then you will be able to spend hours enjoying this book. One warning: since most of the objects are located in the museum in Phnom Penh, if you are a collector of such books you are unlikely to find images of sculptures which you haven't seen already.

Customer Reviews:
This entry gallops along.......2000-06-04
The third chapter in the four book series manages, after a rocky start, to surpass the excellent previous entry. Grant weaves another nailbiting tale that manages to both frustrate and enlighten the reader and sets the stage for a climatic showdown in the next, and final, book. I cannot recommend this series enough. Charles Grant is a terrific writer, which these books wonderfully show.
The third Horseman has come to plague the earth.......1998-11-04
The world has already been devastated by the visit of two of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Death (see SYMPHONY) and Famine (see IN THE MOOD) have left the planet on the brink of extinction. Now the third horseman, Plague, has begun his destruction of mankind.
A mutated strand of small pox is ravaging the world. Only Las Vegas is spared because Plague waits in the city to confront and eliminate Trey Falkirk, the one person who can save the human race. Trey has his own dilemma, as he is unable to leave Vegas, a city that he considers to be his prison, unless he wants misfortune to strike him. Soon, Trey will learn his role in the upcoming fight will force him to make decision that no one should have to make.
The third novel in Charles Grant's "Millennium Quartet" is an exciting tale that demonstrates the author's flair for making the evil side of mankind seems so real. Like the first two novels, the dramatic story line is fast-paced, filled with action, and makes for an interesting reading experience. However, the novel does not require the reader to use much of their cerebrum snce this is an action oriened book. Still, fans of doomsday stories will fully enjoy CHARIOT and its two dark predecessors, while eagerly awaiting the visit of the last horseman.

Book Description
A remarkable team of contributors based across 19 countries explores and explains events worldwide affecting the natural family--married father and mother with biological children --detailing concepts and benefits of natural family that have been taken for granted across centuries, but are now being challenged in many ways. These scholars, many admittedly taking stands that may be deemed politically incorrect, conclude that the natural family is being threatened, yet is vital to provide common ground among all societies, cultures and religious traditions. Psychologists, sociologists, economists, theologians, lawyers, health care professionals, and award-winning journalists are among the chapter authors, as are Nobel Prize Laureate Gary Becker, U.S. Department of Health Assistant Secretary for Children and Families Wade Horn, and former Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Bin Mohamad. Whether or not you agree with their arguments, science and conclusions, you'll want to know what these influential figures are saying. Addressing many lightning-rod issues, from divorce and abortion to euthanasia and same-sex marriage, writers here span the world from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom to Australia, Turkey, India, and China. Intellectuals included are associated with institutions from Brigham Young University, Georgetown School of Medicine and the Boston College School of Law, to the University of Geneva, and the Maxim Institute in New Zealand.

Book Description
This book is arranged into three parable episodes, and each parable episode has a central theme that is expressed fully in the title chosen. All three parable episodes are prophetic parable nonfiction, a new classification that infuses prophetic, ontological, and philosophical elements to produce parables of a singular inspirational nature leading to absolute truth and knowledge of the future of mankind. The title chosen for "Parable Episode I" is: "The Millennium Raptures." It is designed to discuss the Rapture and the events leading up to the Rapture from the eyes of a few individuals. Multiple raptures are revealed in this parable episode. God only knows the exact time for this event, and everyone should prepare for whatever day it could be. Whether the rapture occurs during the next fifty years or not, it will happen early in this new millennium. The title chosen for "Parable Episode II" is "The Millennium Tribulation." This episode is another prophetic parable nonfiction that is designed to illustrate the conditions facing the individuals that remain behind to experience the Tribulation that immediately follows the first global rapture. Once the answers are found, people try to help others before it is too late. There are the two major villains during the Tribulation, Lucifer and the Antichrist, and this parable episode will show who is really the Antichrist. The title chosen for "Parable Episode III" is "The Next Millennium" with a secondary title below this main title, which is "A Thousand Years Living In The New Earth And Heaven and Lucifer's Final Return." This parable episode is the final prophetic parable in this Trilogy. It continues with the story found in "Episode II." In the final chapters of "Parable Episode II," the Tribulation ends, and the new mankind starts enjoying life on the new earth. This last parable episode beautifully displays life on the new earth after the Tribulation. In "Parable Episode III," it tells how everyone deals with heaven on the new earth and the final danger of Lucifer after a thousand years of peace and happiness there. Besides dealing with the activities on the new earth, a detailed account of life in other star systems is given to illustrate the vastness and beauty of God's creation. The final answer to mankind's future is written in this parable episode.

The Man Who Would Be Satan
Parry was a gifted musician and an apprentice in the arts of White Magic. But his life of sweet promise went disastrously awry following the sudden, violent death of his beloved Jolie.
Led down the twisted path of wickedness and depravity by Lilah the harlot demoness, Parry thrived -- first as a sorceror, then as a monk, and finally as a feared inquisitor.
But it wasn't until his mortal flame was extinguished that Parry found his true calling -- as the Incarnation of Evil. And, at the gates of Hell, he prepared to wage war on the master himself -- Lucifer, the dark lord -- with dominion over the infernal realms the ultimate prize!

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
White magician turned, or, baby, Lilith would SO corrupt you too.
Happily minding their own business, a magical family is attacked by violent chr1stian nuts. His father and wife killed, tortured and killed, respectively, he is easy prety for a demoness.
However, he rebels against Lucifer and saves said woman from the head evil dude's final attack. As a consequence, there is an Incarnation opening and rather than have someone much worse take it up, he agrees to do it.
Bit of a problem with this office, though, or, as The Animals ask: "Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood."
The Glue That Holds Them All Together!.......2007-04-11
Throughout the entire series, the main characters of each book try their best to defeat the devil with all his evil influences. And just like all the other books, this regular guy gets thrust into a messed up situation be becoming the incarnation of evil. He tries to make it right but the other incarnations are having none of it. Everyone believes the hype. This book makes all the others coherent. Read this tale! Great book!
Evil's best and brightest [no spoilers].......2006-06-22
"For Love Of Evil" continues the "Incarnations of Immortality" series around the year 1205 as apprentice sorcerer Parry contacts a young village maiden to offer her a brighter future. A touching romance with outstanding character development and plotline organization without the logic-laced discussions and customary vocabulary (historically observed in the Piers Anthony series) presents what the preceding volumes should have accomplished.
Where the earlier stories relate the struggles of the primary Incarnation on the initial acceptance at office, the author addresses the entire career of all the prior novels' nemesis, Satan. After assuming the Office of Evil, the immediate choices and duties of the Incarnation introduces a captivating domain mingled with the previous office holder's intriguing circumstances. The Incarnation of Evil's control over the realm of Hell is blatantly obvious to the position itself as to be laughingly applauded.
Although all of the confrontations have been resolved beforehand to the reader (even if all of the books are considered stand alone), Satan's perspective provides fascinating insight why He made those choices and in retrospect improves the storyline of the weaker tales albeit too late. Satan's rationale to perpetuate evil on Earth might appear improbable nonetheless consistent as the Incarnation of Evil even if well rationalized.
I recommend this series to any fan of the fantasy genre. However those of a highly inflexible religious background or intolerant attitude towards religion might want to avoid the selection.
Thank you.
For the Love of..........2006-01-05
Out of the seven books in this series, this has to be the most interesting. "With a Tangled Skein" is by far my favorite, but this book ties together all the previous book and helps bring more sense to them than you could grasp had this book not been written. Much like "Weilding a Red Sword," a new view of Satan is uncovered, leading the reader to a deeper understanding of the natures of good and evil, which only grows with the final book. Anthony is not preaching to his readers, allowing us to follow and learn where we will. As much as I hate to admit it, being such a great fan of Book 3, this is the best of the series.
While this is a stand-alone novel, much like Anthony's other series books, I highly suggest reading this one begining to end--it will help with understanding some of the later books, as this is one series that is incredibly interwoven.
A fun and different read.......2004-08-20
Piers Anthony must have had quite the task to write this book. He had to take Satan that he had written about in the five previous books and give him a history and make sense of what it was that he was trying to achieve.
What is given to us is not only a Satan with a clear understanding of Evil, but a Satan who actually cares about others. A Satan who actually cares for humanity. A Satan who is misunderstood by others.
A lot of the mysteries of the previous five books are uncovered as a bet is made between Satan and Enoch on the fate of humanity. This also explains why everything happens to Luna and her decendants the way they do. At the end of the book, only one question is left open which is answered by the final book. But this work of fiction was fun and thought-provoking. If you've read the other five, you can't stop before reading this one. If you haven't read the other five, read them first. It makes this book more interesting.
