Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Quite a travesty and insult to Beatrix Potter.......2007-05-23

Please do not waste your money buying The Complete Tales of Peter Rabbit with illustrations by Charles Santore. Beatrix Potter would have been heartbroken at the sight of these illustrations and the changes in text and format. If you want to instill memories in your children, do it with ONLY a copy that includes Beatrix Potter's beautiful art and prose. Seek out a copy of Beatrix's that includes HER ART. These illustrations have not a shred of the beauty and form that were originally intended.
It's sad that even one tree was wasted to produce this book.

5 out of 5 stars tale's of childhood.......2001-05-23

My dad read this title to me when I was very young. Some of my best memories with him are sitting in his lap early in the morning before anyone else was up. I was not always as healthy as I am now; I was always sick with something. I would creep into his lap while he was reading. I remember he'd pull out the "Rabbit book" or the "frog book", depending on the mood I was in. And then he'd read aloud to me while I stared at the beautiful pictures.

There are few books I can say the same for. But this book will make standing memories for children. These were dad's and my stories, and I'll never forget the mornings we spent reading them.

3 out of 5 stars A disappointing remake of classic stories.......2000-10-19

The text in this book differs slightly from the original, and is condensed onto large pages with less pictures. In effect, when reading this book to my child, he wanted to "see the picture", but there was none. We have returned to using the original version which illustrates much more of the action.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful eye-pleasing edition.......2000-06-27

This edition of the classic has large pages with beautiful drawings of the rabbits and other creatures. What is especially nice about the text is that it introduces higher-level vocabulary words in an exciting adventure story suitable to listeners as young as 3 or 4.

Product Description

Beatrix Potter drew from her love of nature to create timeless stories featuring an unforgettable collection of some of the most wonderful animal characters ever created. In The Tale of Peter Rabbit , Peter's mother has warned her children to stay out of Mr. McGregor's garden. Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail obey their mother but Peter just can't resist. In The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher , Mr. Fisher is a frog that loves to catch little fish for dinner. He better be careful, because as he finds out, some of the bigger fish are really quite fond of frog. The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin is an enchanting tale about a tail that belongs to a squirrel named Nutkin. Perhaps he shouldn't tease Old Brown the Owl so very much. The Pie and the Patty Pan is about a cat named Ribsy invites her dog friend Duchess to dinner. Duchess is afraid the menu will include mouse pie and the lengths she goes to for a meal more to her liking makes for quite an amusing tale. Book Description

While we know much of Beatrix Potter from her classic children's stories, there is a great deal more to this courageous woman than meets the eye. Born into a well-off but repressive family and society, Beatrix Potter's triumph over personal difficulties and her ground-breaking work in such fields as science and conservation make her a great role model and inspiration for children today. This splendid children's introduction to her extraordinary life story is ideal for young fans who want an informative and easy to understand text and provides an excellent source of reference for school projects.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars life of a great lady.......2001-08-12

This lady could have been a great scientist as she was meticulous in observation and wanted to be a biologist. However she was a dutiful daughter and turned her talents first to writing and illustrating childrens stories and later to being an innovative and hardworking farmer and breeder of sheep. Her intense love of the beauty of the lake district and the old villages led into the conservation movement and she helped the birth of the National Trust in England.

5 out of 5 stars a fantastic collection of rabbit tales.......2000-09-26

I bought this book for my nephew's birthday. To say the least he loved the stories and has prompted his imaginative and creative abilities....he wants more of these books. The illustrations he thinks are cute and laughable! . Beatrix Potter has always been one of my favorite authors as a child and from my nephew's reaction it seems as though it will be a favorite of children of all ages. This books is great for kids and is quite easy to read and understand. It is also quite affordable to buy the lot. I am about to order another of these books. Thanks

          Book Description

Using the example of The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter to explore the impact of new media and technologies on how children learn about stories and reading, this book investigates nearly 100 re-tellings in a variety of media, some authorized by Potter's publisher Frederick Warne, some unauthorized. It looks at the implications of converging developments in children's literature: new media and technologies now readily available to children leading to new conventions and protocols of storytelling; changing commercial pressures on publishers and an emphasis on producing commodities associated with books and videos; saturation marketing which targets children and adults in different ways; and a cultural emphasis on the fragmentation, adaptation, and re-working of texts.
The Tale of Peter Rabbit is now available as picture book, chapter book, board and bath book, pop-up, video (in versions that adhere to the original story and versions that deviate radically to include "new adventures" or Christian messages), ballet, CD-ROM, computer disc, audio tape, and filmstrip. The character of Peter Rabbit may be purchased as toy, clothing, dish, ornament, wallpaper, food, paper doll, and much else. His story and that of his author, Beatrix Potter, reappear in fragmented form in other books for children, in a murder mystery for adults, and in a graphic novel for teenagers. This book raises questions about the impact of these developments on young readers. Index. Appendix. Bibliography.

            Book Description

Private Eye John Taylor is the only thing standing between his not-quite-human mother and the destruction of the magical realm within London known as the Nightside.

            Customer Reviews:

            3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-26

Something John Taylor says sums this book up pretty well:

"..we have a biblical myth to kill."

It is war between John and his mother Lilith, with various Nightside residents from the future, those that have been trying to kill him for so long to stop this war from destroying most of everything, taking part.

Everybody is involved, and even the Authorities are exposed to the violence, as John makes a desperate run to Shadows Fall for a weapon that may give him a chance, with his friends running sacrificial inteference.

Lilith, the architect of the Nightside to give herself a haven from the powers of Heaven and Hell will not go easily, and they may even need another plan.

This book is a lot more Deathstalker than private investigator, with super powered beings, monsters, gods, zombies, and everything else being blasted, mastered and b*stard all over the Nightside and the timeline.

            5 out of 5 stars Stunning read.......2007-02-02

There is no way you can put this book down once you start reading !! The Nightside series is without a doubt one of the most gripping book series I encountered in a long time. OK, not everyone will enjoy the Gods and Monsters, the gore and Magicks and the collection of bizarre (main) characters. For those of you who can enjoy a perfect piece of escapism .... go on, get the whole series - you will not regret it

            5 out of 5 stars wow.......2006-10-15

I have just discovered this author and i really enjoy this series. I got this one at the library and read it in one day.
It is really good and leaves you thinking and waiting for the next one too,.

            5 out of 5 stars I love the Nightside.......2006-08-08

Well I've read the entire Nightside series and loved it! Simon Green created a fantastic world with fascinating people. The only bad thing is that I think this will be the last book in the Nightside series. :-(

However it does seem that he's got another series called Shadow's Falls that's linked to the Nightside. Woo hoo!

Simon's writing reminds me a lot of Neil Gaiman and Clive Barker (Everville, Imajica). I can't recommend this series enough!

            4 out of 5 stars A Great Romp.......2006-06-01

I had some free time, so I read the entire Nightside series in one go. It was no chore, but a great romp! Once into it, I couldn't put it down and went eagerly from one book to the next. They're light reading but a whale of a good time. I love John Taylor and all the other characters of the Nightside, especially Shotgun Suzie, Walker, Alex, and Dead Boy. The books have some unforgettable scenes, a lot of suspense, and wonderful flights of imagination. What more can one ask for on lazy early summer days? I loved how various themes and characters were woven together across several of the books...very satisfying. This last book brought everything to a conclusion..or did it? Certainly one plot thread was finished, and in an exciting way, but there are other possibilities for John and his companions. I hope this is not the last we will see of Nightside.

I would give this last book (and indeed the series as a whole) 5 stars but it has a number of repetitions, particularly in dialog (there are some phrases that nearly every character uses over and over again, which got tiring). I probably noticed these more given that I read all the books through one after the other. Some repetition is needed to catch up readers who may not have read the previous books (and I agree with previous reviewers that no one should start with this last book), but by the later books, some laziness in the writing as evidenced by repetitious dialog began to show up.

Still, I highly recommend this series to anyone with an interest in urban fantasy and sci-fi.
