Book Description
Widely acclaimed throughout Latin America after its 1992 release in Argentina, The Absent City takes the form of a futuristic detective novel. In the end, however, it is a meditation on the nature of totalitarian regimes, on the transition to democracy after the end of such regimes, and on the power of language to create and define reality. Ricardo Piglia combines his trademark avant-garde aesthetics with astute cultural and political insights into Argentina’s history and contemporary condition in this conceptually daring and entertaining work.
The novel follows Junior, a reporter for a daily Buenos Aires newspaper, as he attempts to locate a secret machine that contains the mind and the memory of a woman named Elena. While Elena produces stories that reflect on actual events in Argentina, the police are seeking her destruction because of the revelations of atrocities that sheâthe machineâis disseminating through texts and taped recordings. The book thus portrays the race to recover the history and memory of a city and a country where history has largely been obliterated by political repression. Its narrativesâall part of a detective story, all part of something moreâmultiply as they intersect with each other, like the streets and avenues of Buenos Aires itself.
The second of Piglia’s novels to be translated by Duke University Pressâthe first was Artifical Respirationâthis book continues the author’s quest to portray the abuses and atrocities that characterize dictatorships as well as the difficulties associated with making the transition to democracy. Translated and with an introduction by Sergio Waisman, it includes a new afterword by the author.

Fantasy Bloat, some interesting points .......2007-08-01
Herald Elspeth is the heir to the kingdom of Valdemar and a rather difficult person to like. Darkwind is a 27 year old Tayledras scout/wizard. This novel alternates between both characters and their respective lives as their paths slowly join.
I admit, I didn't empathize with Elspeth. She's too whiney and I don't like the way she treats her companion. I also think she handled the situation with Skif poorly. Darkwind is ok, but a little too cookie cutter, and the relationship between him and the seventeen year old scout skeeved me out. Also his scenes at times were boring.
Overall this was an OK novel. I found the parts with the gryphons a bit strange, and the sections told from Darkwinds POV were bland.
Overall: 3 star read.
Good book spattered with irritating logical contradictions........2006-10-23
This book really does make for exciting and somewhat fearful reading with the introduction of the arch-adept bloodmage 'Falconsbane' into the picture and how he nearly comes to destroy the Sheyna Tayledras community.
The plot is good and there are a couple of of twists and turns that aren't entirely expected. Overall rather charming reading.
However, some contradictions truly do destroy the pleasure of reading this story:
- AFAIK Companions technically _cannot_ be affected by direct magic. They are immune to magic strikes unless there is an embedded body spell. (mentioned in the herald mage series). So, how did they get affected by direct energy strikes merrily thrown by Falconsbane?
-Skif is supposed to be wordly-wise and mature (Arrows of the Queen). Why does he suddenly decide to behave like a stupid dog-in-heat while accompanying Elspeth? I was wincing all the time at this sudden change in his personality.
-The HORRIBLE tendency of every bloody character to sound like the other (with the possible exception of the Taleydras), when they constantly refer to each other using pet nicknames. Mercedes Lackey (I will *not* call her misty) simply has to get rid of this fundamental flaw in her writing. Its supremely irritating! Here we have Elspeth making a *formal* speech to the Valdemar Council and she refers to Kerowyn as 'Kero' 4 times in that speech....aargh.
It's...Okay.......2006-01-05
I read all three books in this series, and Skif's...uh...'emotions' were akin to one such as a uncastrated dog who smells a female in heat. That was very irritating considering he did this two or three times before giving up.
Gwena irritated me more then Elspeth personally, and the gryphons were highly likeable. The Tayledras and Shin'a'In were very interesting cultures and Mornelithe Falconsbane was a very hate-able evil guy.
I agree with what someone said about the 'crash course' so-to-speak of becoming an Adept, that it should have taken her much longer, and the meet-Darkwind-who-automatically-likes-her thing was very stereotypical as well.
Winds of Fate.......2005-09-10
I absolutely love the entire "Valdemar" series, but this particular trilogy is one of my most favorite.
it is true.......2005-03-03
please exscuse the spelling
it is true that these books are perdictable as all of her valdemar books are but it is plesent perdictablity no serprises yes but no let downs ether
great book for all who like an ezzy but charming story

Black Dawn, Bright Day.......2007-03-10
This book is truly one of the BEST. It will raise your consciousness of the way we're living. And at the same time treating that which is providing us with life. I have ordered extras to pass out to try and help others have the same light bulb moment. I believe that nature has had ENOUGH of our craziness as far as the way we have treated earth mother. This book breaks it down to exactly what we've been doing all over this planet. We are not going to survive if this madness continues. PLEASE read and pass it on. We must change our ways in order for our future generation to have a chance.
Black Dawn,Bright Day.......2006-11-06
Sun Bear has given an excellent account of how we have abused the earth and what the consequences of that abuse will be. He also provides instructions on how to survive those 'consequences'. Sun Bear has great understanding and insight regarding the earth and its resources. It's very sobering reading and not to be taken lightly.....since many of the prophecies are already happening.
Yatahey! An Old Friend...redux.......2005-09-05
Long before, while I lived "back east", I found some wonderful books that have changed my life path, among them, I found Sun Bear. The first book of his I read was "Black Dawn, Bright Day". It struck me, as very powerful and a tad scary, but, to my then naieve self, the "millenium" was sooooo far away it was hard to take as viable, despite my mistrust of [our's most especially] government officials. We had gas shortages, we made it through Viet Nam, we know about the Ozone layer, we have learned -- I believed that they would surely do the "right thing" and fix it before his worse prophecies could materialize. With the recent onset, and increasing intensity, of many natural, and unnatural crises [eliminating "Mother Earth's Parasites i.e. humans], and now "Katrina" coupled with the [not yet declared war in Iraq], I am curious to see just how accurate the predictions were [as a personal aside, around a few months ago, the resident eagles were missing for a long while, and whales have been grounding themselves again, and I couldn't help recall that this was one of the portents Sun Bear spoke of, re: huge changes afoot]. Recently the Eagles have returned, sporadically, and I can only hope that they are letting us know that if we "do the right things" we still may have a good chance of turning things around. What I want to say to potential readers is, at worse, this book is written beautifully, with the late great Sun Bear's voice and wit, and at best, it's a hopeful warning. I'm going to peruse my shelves and /moving boxes right now for a reread myself.
Prophecies of the Bright Day.......2001-10-28
For a long time I had heard and read other individual's positive views on this book: "Black Dawn,Bright Day" by Sun Bear. Finally 3 weeks ago I order the book. I think in my opinion that this book is the best of the Native American prophecies books I had read thus far. In this age when the popular religious fever view seems to be to look forward to escaping the earth and flying off on a cloud...a book such as this that focuses on a spiritual purification of out earth and then it's renewl="The Bright Day" hope instead of it's destruction...is very refreshing. Indeed, there are "some" Judeo-Christian groups who embrace the hope of the renewl of our earth..but they usually lacked the understanding of helping taking care of our earth NOW as part of the plan to one day see the renewl of the earth and they lack the Native American's understanding and view of viewing the animals and nature as being in a kinship with us humans..Unforuantly, instead of viewing the animals and nature in this positive way that the Native Americans do...they (our white culture)tends to view the earth, animals and nature as somehting to exploit selfishly to our own benifit. To me, if we disrespect the creation...then we disrespect the one who create it and all life there upon it..the Creator. This book helps us understand all this and the harm of the "Ladder Approuch" philosophy held in our culture that is ruining our earth. My complaint would likely be that the book towards the back gets a little too doom-ish, in much they way most of these restored earth believing Judeo-Christian groups get. But other than that...I liked it alot.

A valuable resource relevant to Y2K and Earth Changes........1998-12-15
As a former investigative reporter for Post Newsweek TV Group, I became interested in the late Sun Bear's "Black Dawn/Bright Day", which does a very comprehensive job of explaining the upcoming Earth Changes that Native Americans and other indigenious people from around the world have been predicting for many centuries. Sun Bear begins with an in-depth, informative look at how we have gotten ourselves into the mess we are experiencing: earthquakes increasing in number; destruction of 51 acres of tropical forests every minute; consumption of 35,000 barrels of oil every minute; 1692 acres of productive dry land become desert every hour; 1800 children are dying of starvation every hour; 25,000 die of water shortage or contamination every day; etc.He also presents a fascinating account of Indian prophecies, warnings that are now becoming a reality. One in particular is the Iroquois prophecy about the wrestling match between the serpents. The white and red serpents both have the same goals of domination, conquest, and control of Planet Earth. These two serpents were seen to be wrestling with each other until the rivers boiled and the fish died. Soon the black serpent would come into the battle and defeat the red and white serpents. As the black serpent looked toward the indigenious people of Planet Earth to further his wrath, he would see the coming of the great light of Deganawida and become frightened, flee, and never bother the people again.Through contact with the Great Spirit, Sun Bear learned the white and red serpents represented the United States and the Soviet Union. Through our atomic testing we have literally killed off fish and rivers have boiled. Also through the many years of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union supplied weapons to others in the names of democracy and communism. Now the black serpent represented as the Moslem countries has appeared on the scene and gotten the United States and the Soviet Union into conflicts that still plague our world through terrorism. Sun Bear saw the next stage as war among the Moslems and uses the occupation of Kuwait leading to the Gulf War. Yes, Sun Bear does paint a fact-filled, gloomy picture for Planet Earth; however, he also sees the tremendous benefits of "the cleansing" that will soon occur. He sees this leading to the transformation of a planet plagued by greed, lust, and hate to one eventually of peace, abundance, and love. He already sees the whiteman coming to the Native Americans to learn the ancient ways of Planet Earth and how to restore peace, abundance, and love. Sun Bear shares with us how we can prepare ourselves for survival during the Earth Changes and even shares "safe areas" as he saw them through visions and the experiences of traveling through out the world. I used his map of "safe areas" for the United States for my research on the small towns mentioned in my forthcoming book "Survival Manual for Y2K & Beyond."

Love It!!.......2007-10-01
I first read this book when I was a child. I loved it. I checked it out of my schools library so many times they let me just keep it till the end of the school year. The story line and the people themselves are so hard to put down. The mythology in the book made me look into the shinto myths. I would recommend this book to anyone. I am twenty six now and still love this book!!
Finally we have the book in print........2007-07-10
I am so happy that the book was brought back in print by Viz. I have been waiting for this book for a really long time. After I saw it on an English book of literature I wanted to have it. But when I learned that it was out of print and that it was on Amazon for more than $3oo dollars I was devastated, and I hoped that some day it would be back in print. I had to settle for the copies that were on my public library. But I really wanted to have my very own copy as well as the sequels of the book. So I remained patient and waited and finally it was brought back. I cannot wait to get my copy and hopefully I will also see the sequels also translated. But in the mean time I will enjoy this book first.
definitely a must-read!.......2006-06-16
this book is amazing and i loved it! i read it in junior high, too, and i wish it would be back in print. i definitely cannot buy it for $200! this book is amazing with its details and dialogue and interesting adventures that happen! and the innocent mind of chihaya is definitely attractive and also his unknown power over the dragon sword is so alluring. this historical fairytale is the best i've ever read! it keeps you reading and your heart thumping in anxiety over what will occur next.
So Sad, yet Beautiful .......2006-01-26
I agree with the other reviewers, this book NEEDS to be back in print. I read it in junior high and was extremely enchanted! I quickly passed it to my mother and told friends about it; its just so lovely, though occassionally sad.
I really can't say much that hasn't been said, but if anyone who has power reads this- LET'S GET THIS BOOK BACK IN PRINT!! (I can't afford a $200 book on a college students pay...)
A book of transcendant beauty..........2005-08-24
I agree with one of the former reviewers here that it is indeed a tragedy that this book is out of print. It belongs with the other classics of high fantasy and allegory that have been reprinted thousands of times throughout the years.
The subtlety of the descriptions and development in this book is pure magic, the best I have ever seen. Everything moves so fluidly --the plot, the scenes, and the characters develop gradually but smoothly and completely-- that I can only think that if a beautiful water-color painting could have a written form, this would be it. This book must have been very skillfully translated from its original Japanese, because never in the English language have I found such images before. While this book does entertain as well, and ends, against all odds, happily, it transcends many other books because it does not simply touch the mind or emotions. There is something spiritual about it, something that touches that part of each of us that is truly alive and connected to the life all around us. Not only does it touch it, but it opens our eyes to that connection. That alone makes this book worth reading. I wish there were more books like it.

Book Description
Winds of Fate could be called a war story but it is not. Instead it is the story of ordinary people caught up in the furor of World War Two. It is the story of Charlie Cross and his wife Doretta, both civilians but ultimately tied to the military, Charlie as a Service Pilot with Air Transport Command and Doretta as an instructor with the Women Airforce Service Pilots. Winds of Fate takes the reader from the security of the civilian airlines to Natal, Brazil, across the South Atlantic to India and the heroic Hump operation over the Himalayas. It also takes the reader through the world of the WASPs and the lives of the female ferry pilots who flew military airplanes within the United States under the most difficult conditions. It is a novel of endings and beginnings. The end of one life and the beginning of another and the end of one love and the beginning of an epic love affair that will span oceans, years and continents, Yes, it is also a love story, a story of the love for friends, for country and the love between a man and a woman under the duress of war.
Customer Reviews:
Fastinating adventure story.......2007-04-08
"Winds of Fate" continues the exploits of Charlie and Doretta Cross as they each contribute to the aviation efforts in WWII on different continents. Mr. DeBurgh captures the realism by providing the historical aspects of these endeavors while weaving a romantic tale involving the characters. As was the case in the first novel in this series "Riders of the Wind" I did not want the book to end. What a great ride!
Robert DeBurgh does it again.......2007-02-20
Robert F. DeBurgh has done it again! He has produced another novel that begs to be read cover to cover without putting it down. At the beginning "Winds of Fate" seems to be an adventure story that takes the reader through the skies of the United States, Brazil, India and China during WWII, but at the end it turns into a tender, sensitive love story. Once I started it I simply couldn't stop. A must read for all who love action/ adventure and a must read for all who love romance.
