Wow!!.......2006-12-05
Katrina's life has been anything but easy. At the age of fifteen, Katrina was kicked out of her parent's house due to being pregnant. Katrina was forced to live on welfare and in a shelter until she meets Tony. Tony seems like her knight in shining armor but he's nothing but a pimp looking for his next money maker. Katrina leaves Tony after he discovers that she's pregnant with her second child. Katrina goes back to prostitution to support her two children Nina and Jimmy. But when Katrina is sent to jail, Nina and Jimmy are left to fend for themselves. Nina and Jimmy must be strong for other if they're going to survive.
Neglected Souls is a riveting novel by Richard Jeanty. Jeanty skillfully takes readers on an emotional journey of a young family struggling to make it. I loved the way this author captured the turmoil and hopelessness of Katrina, Nina and Jimmy. I felt myself rooting for Nina and Jimmy as they were trying to fight their way out of the ghetto. Readers will be glued to the pages to the very end. Neglected Souls is the perfect lead in to the sequel Neglected No More
(RAW Rating: 3.5) - Playing the cards you're dealt.......2006-08-09
Sometimes life has a way of handing you a few bad cards in the game of life and survival depends on how well you can play the hand that is dealt. For Katrina it was a grueling task of just making it from one day to the next. Raped, pregnant and tossed out on the streets at the age of 14 is unthinkable, but it happened to Katrina. Further tragedy ensues when she and her daughter, Nina move in with a pimp and he introduces (used loosely) her to prostitution. The result is a way to earn money, but she also gets pregnant with her son Jimmy in the process. Katrina would spend many years trying to keep her family together as she works the streets trying to hide her occupation from her children. Ultimately, she is consumed with prostitution and drug abuse to the detriment of Nina and Jimmy. Katrina finds herself in jail for murder, nowhere to turn and of no help to her children. So she makes a decision she feels is in their best interest.
Nina and Jimmy, left to fend for themselves on the mean streets of Boston overcome many obstacles to stay together and stay focused. Each one had their own demons that drove them to succeed. Nina had her dream of being on the police force, while Jimmy became a star athlete in high school with professional aspirations. While living alone, undetected by authorities without any parental figures, Nina and Jimmy raised each other. They had the help of their mentor, Pastor Jacobs, whom they met at the Boys and Girls Club. Pastor Jacob would become the parental figure in both their lives and help to give them some of the guidance they both would need.
NEGLECTED SOULS by Richard Jeanty is a book that touches your soul deeply. I really felt for Katrina and her children. I walked away with a newfound respect for organizations like the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Organizations like these do so much to keep neglected children off the streets and in productive programs. I thought the characters in this book were interesting and well thought out; however, I would have liked to have read the story through their dialogue rather than the author's narration. Also, a few layout problems existed with the book that presented some disruption to the flow. In all, this was great story about overcoming obstacles and problems in the hood. It was great to see a story like this one that showcased some of the successful outcomes rather the negative ones we see too many of.

Highly Respected Explicit Material .......2006-07-11
This is by far the most interesting masterpiece I've read all year. It captivates not only the mind and body, but also the soul, as suggested in the title. This book is uncontrollably addictive and easily received by most.
Neglected Souls by Richard Jeanty: An PeoplewholoveGoodBooks Review.......2006-06-04
Katrina Johnson grew up in a strict household with very religious parents, after being raped at 14 and turning up pregnant, Katrina is kicked out of the house by her father. Alone on the streets with a baby, Katrina moves from shelter to shelter until one day she meets Tony. Tony sweeps Katrina off her feet, and she begins to fall head over heels. She has no idea what Tony has in store for her. He uses her love for him to convince her to sell her body to support them and their "lavish" lifestyle. Soon, Katrina begins to see there are 2 sides to Tony, and after becoming pregnant with her second child, Tony throws her out. Homeless with 2 children to support, Katrina quickly blows through the money she saved and once again, must sell her body to support them. Soon, Katrina gets mixed in with the wrong man. A man who turns her onto drugs. Now, an addict, Katrina struggles to support her habit while neglecting her children, Nina and Jimmy in the process. After Katrina commits murder, she is sent to prison and Nina and Jimmy must now fend for themselves. Nina is determined not to allow her or Jimmy to wind up in foster homes. The children grow up and despite their troubled childhood, begin to put their lives back together until a repressed memory comes back to haunt them .....a memory that leads to murder. Neglected Souls is the gritty, heartbreaking story of 2 children who survive sexual, physical, and emotional abuse to make it despite the odds stacked against them. Richard Jeanty has written an touching story with unforgettable characters.Reviewed by Shay C of PeoplewholoveGoodBooks.
Terrible.......2006-04-26
I thought this book was unreadably bad. It was poorly written, and full of spelling and grammatical errors. It didnt seem as though it had been proof read or edited at all. It seemed like something written by a high school student, which would be fine, but not when you are charging people 15 dollars to buy it and presenting it as a completed novel. I think its a sad state of affairs that a book like this is even able to get published.
Book Description
The Cowboy and the Princess
Faron Whitelaw had some nerve calling Belinda Prescott a princess. A nearly bankrupt ranch was hardly a castle, and Faron, an ill-tempered cowboy who'd inherited half her kingdom, was certainly no prince. Faron became spitting mad when Belinda informed him about the truth of his parentage: he wasn't one of the Whitelaws of Texas.
He wanted to believe that she was nothing more than a gold digger, but all she seemed to want was him
The Wrangler and the Rich Girl
Garth Whitelaw couldn't understand why a rich Texas debutante like Candy Baylor would want to train horses. But she looked darn sexy in worn jeans with hay in her hair, so who was he to judge? Candy had no idea why Garth was suddenly so agreeable, but she wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth. Besides, her instructors in school had never been so ruggedly handsome as this wrangler
and she wouldn't mind engaging in some horseplay!

An other Joan Johnston winner.......2007-02-19
I klove Joan Johnston's books. she has a real knack for bringing people to life and making you want to jump into the pages with them. In The Cowboy and the Priness, Faron's story is very interesting because he meets his heroione ina an unusual way, at least an unusual relationship, and both of them are too afraid to believe this could be real because of past experiences. But you cheer for them every step of the way and clap your hands when you get to the Happily Ever After. In The Wrangler and the Rich Girl once again the reader is pulled right into the story. Although you want to slap Garth upside the head at least a hundred times for being such a rigid fool. You will love Candy, the "Rich Girl", and her determination a grit and again, the happy ending is just what the doctor ordered. For all of us collecting Johnston's wonderful Whitelaw series, you can't afford to miss this book.
Another Joan Johnston Winner.......2007-02-15
I just love Joan Johnston's books so each time a new one comes out I can't wait to get it. She really gets into her characters. What I really liked about this book is how the second story picks up pieces from the first story and continues on. Only took me 4 hours to read the book and I was wishing I had another one of hers to read.
3rd and 4th in Hawk's Way Romance Series.......2006-12-20
These two stories are part of the "Hawk's Way" series of romantic, modern day westerns and adventures by Joan Johnston. The core family, the Whitelaws(don't ya just love that name) are 3 brothers and 1 sister who have lost their parents, but have managed on their own and are a close knit group. The first 4 stories begin with them. If you havn't read them yet, the first in the series is "Honey and the Hired Man"(Middle brother Jessie's story)and "The Rancher and the Runaway Bride"(Tate, the beautiful little sister's story)
"The Cowboy and the Princess" is the 3rd in the Hawk's Way series. It is Faron's story the youngest of the brothers and quite the ladies man. Faron's story unfolds into a love like a fairy tale(but not for kids!).
Faron gets the news. A letter from a woman claiming to be his step-mother. Seems Mom Whitelaw had herself a little affair, and Faron was the result. This was the first he heard that he was not a full blooded Whitelaw. He is quite upset by the news, and takes off for Wyoming to confront his horrid stepmother who says he is in the will. He's not a happy camper. While scouting across the land he is to inherit, he runs into the most gorgeous creature he has ever seen. A beautiful blonde who looks like a princess. And By the way, Faron is no slouch in the looks department as well. Johnston doesn't make us wait too long for the first scene of passion. As these two find something in each other's arms they both needed. He calls her his Princess, she calls him "Cowboy". And of course, neither knew at the time, that he was the stepson of this young and beautiful princess(Belinda Prescott), but when they do find out, the friction between them only adds more heat to their passion. They try(really hard) to stay away from each other, but Faron is there to help his father's wife fix up the ranch for sale, and it's awfully hard to keep them apart.Other new and wonderful characters are introduced that we hope to see in some future stories. Faron's new grandmother, is some fun and feisty old lady!
The story of Belinda Prescott's marriage to Faron's father, and the description of the Wyoming Ranch,"King's Castle" and it surroundings adds greatly, but the romance is one of the best. These two were made for each other, and you know it. The passion heats up. There is even a ride on horseback(with both on the same horse), that is like no other ride. The book kept me turning the pages all the way through.
The Wrangler and The Rich Girl" is 4th in the Series(there are many more to follow). Oldest brother Garth finally finds love in this sizzling romance. Garth's story is the last of the core family, before the series moves on to more branches of this passionate family tree.
Garth has been raising up his brothers and sister, since the death of his parents. They are a close knit and raucous bunch, and their wildness only adds to their passionate and steamy relationships. Garth is very different than his younger siblings. He was old enough at the time it happened, to witness the demise of his parent's marriage due to his mother's infidelity, resulting in the birth of Faron, youngest of the brothers. Any woman would love to fall into the arms(and bed) of this rugged and gorgeous wrangler. But Garth has a problem with trust and commitment. He cannot get passed what his mother did, and the women he sees and beds are just there for his pleasure. And they are the type who don't ask for more then that. Enter Candy Baylor. A girl he had known through his business dealings with her very wealthy father. She was young, and spoiled when they first met, and practically threw herself at this hunk of a man, only to be violently kisses, then tossed aside by Garth. Three years later, she is a woman, but only in age. Her desire now is to breed and train cutting horses, that specialize in separating cows from the herd for the ranchers. She's always gotten her way with her rich father, and now she won't have less then the number one guy in the field, Garth, teach her.
Garth remembers(as does she), their little encounter, and plans to have his way with her now that she is a woman. But that's all he wants from this beautiful rich girl. As the lessons progress,he has his way often, something Candy enjoys for the first time in her life. But their feelings for each other are growing as well. They can hardly be in the same room without the sparks flying. Candy knows that Garth cannot express his feeling, in any other way then to make love to her quite demonstratively. The storyline parallels the lessons Garth is giving her on taming a stubborn, wild stallion to stud. Candy takes each step slowly, knowing that Garth has issues from his past, that prevent him from trusting a woman enough to marry her.
In the meantime, their passion sizzles in nearly every chapter(sometimes even a couple of times per chapter), and if you are thinking that it's a story where the man just has his way whenever he wants...think about how Rhett Butler forcefully carried Scarlett up to the bedroom one night, and how she was happily singing the next morning! The story will have you turning the pages, as there is much more substance to this romance then just the hot love scenes.
The story runs parallel to Faron's story, as this romance takes place, during the same timespan while Faron is in Wyoming having his own complications. There are a couple of scenes, near the end, that are the exact scenes from "The Cowboy and the Princess", but this time it is played out from Candy's view point.
It's probably a good idea but not necessary to read them in order. Each stands on it's own and Ms. Johnston gives a pretty good background of the other siblings and their stories, in each book. The series goes on to branch out to other family members and generations, and there are several that come 2 or 3 together in one book. "Hawks Way Rouges" and "Hawk"s Way Bachelors"(which includes these two plus The Runaway Bride(Tate) are a couple of the books that include 3 of the novellas together. So you may want to check before buying any of the individual books. It saves on shipping costs as well.
It's a great series, and you won't be able to stop at just one.
Enjoy...Laurie

A Truly Wonderful Book about Two Truly Wonderful People.......2006-06-11
who enriched our lives over five decades.
Cheryl Rogers Barnett has truly written a memoir full of Love, Respect, and Admiration for her late parents, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. She writes of the people they were, before she was born, the circumstances of her adoption - yes, Cheryl was adopted by Roy and his first wife - and growing up in the Rogers-Evans* (Roy's first wife died while Cheryl was still a young pre-adolescent child, Dale lovingly took her on as her own) household. Roy, bless his soul, was in many ways, a real cowboy who eschewed the Hollywood lifestyle and could live in the great outdoors - in fact one of their early homes out at Lake Hughes was in a wooded setting - with rattlesnakes! Knowing that this wouldn't work, Roy moved in closer to Los Angeles, but always made sure that his children were grounded and did not have airs about them.
Barnett writes about her growing-up in the Rogers-Evans household, and in reading it one kind of wishes that too were put of a family that truly lived by the Cowboy Code. Roy and Dale were among the kindest folks one could ever meet, and I sure wish I did. Both Roy and Dale were unfailing kind and considerate to most people they met. It speaks volumes that in the one instance Roy ever got angry at fans was when they chose to want to visit him on the day they were burying Cheryl's little sister, Robin, and only AFTER these uncouth and rude people insisted in visiting him, having no consideration for the grief of the family.
She writes of the wonder horse Trigger, of how George "Gabby" Hayes was as different in real life as he was in the movies. Gabby, bless him, was a trained Shakespearian actor who was more accustomed to wearing tweed suits than a bandana and chaps - still, he too made the roles his very own. There are the Hollywood stories and vignettes of growing up knowing John Wayne and so many other Western heroes and other television and movie celebs, written straightforward, (the reader will never have the feeling that this book is a gossipy read) of Nudie the Famous Rodeo Tailor whom Roy helped to get established in Hollywood, and finally of the last decades when Roy and Dale, seeing how different Hollywood had become (mid-1960s), chose to move out to Apple Valley, and live out their lives there.
Throughout it all, Roy and Dale always gave deep love to the people they knew, and encouraged their children to be the best and fine folks in their own right(after learning she was adopted, Cheryl underwent a quest to learn about her real parents, with Roy and Dale supporting her every way). With the happiness there were the tragedies, first Robin, then the young son who died serving in the U.S. Army, and the adopted daughter from Korea, killed in a senseless road accident. Throughout it all, Roy and Dale's faith in God was never unwavering and was always solid. They lived the true meaning of the Cowboy and Cowgirl Codes.*
*(on their very last record together, Roy, Dale and son Dusty recorded a song written by two great friends of mine, Chris Hillman and Steve Hill entitled: "God's Plan" ...that pretty well sums up the honest and rich meaning of the lives they lived.
A warm memoir of a time when the tinsel Cowboys were so very much real - and real people too, unlike the sad imitation that Hollywood has become these days. Thank you, Cheryl Rogers-Barnett for a heartwarming read, and for signing my Roy Rogers-Dale Evans lunchpail in Wickenburg, Arizona last April.
Cowboy Princess.......2006-02-25
I loved this book! I became a little girl again with eyes wide open in awe of my heroes - Roy and Dale. Cheryl is very honest about the fun, the hectic schedules, the grief over the loss of her siblings, her rebellious nature in an innocent way, the strengths and weaknesses of her well-known parents who raised their family well, loved them dearly, lived a honorable life and had a lot of adventures in the way. Where the fans viewed Roy and Dale as super heroes ... Cheryl presents them as parents. I highly recommend this book!
Highly recommended for fans of Roy Rogers.......2004-07-14
Cowboy Princess: Life With My Parents Roy Rogers And Dale Evans is Cheryl Rogers-Barnett's true story of growing up as the daughter of "the King of Cowboys" and "the Queen of the West", whose popular exploits on movies and TV captivated the nation. Joy, the gruelling demands of the entertainment industry, the terrible loss of three siblings, and the lively personalities of those who shared their lives with Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, and Cheryl Rogers-Barnett fill this highly readable and personal account. Highly recommended for fans of Roy Rogers and the western movies of yesteryear.

3rd In Joan Johnston's Hawk's Way Series...A Delicious Fairy Tale Romance.......2006-11-15
Joan Johnston has written several series of delicious Romantic Westerns, usually revolving around the members of one family, or in some cases feuding families. Some also have added mystery or adventure, some take place over generations, beginning in the old West, but one thing is for sure, they are all wonderful romances(and most often pretty steamy as well), that will take you away for just a little while.
"The Cowboy and the Princess" is the 3rd in the Hawk's Way series. Modern day Western Romances, that begin with the Whitelaw family. Four siblings. Three big brawny brothers, and their beautiful little sister. They raised themselves after their parents death, and are a close knit and loving bunch, who may be just a bit on the wild side. The first in the series, "Honey and the Hired Hand", was about next to oldest brother Jessie and his love for "Honey". Next up was "The Rancher and the Runaway Bride", Tate the younger sister, who runs off to find love, followed by this one the story of Faron the youngest of the brothers.
The book kept me turning the pages all the way through.
Next up in the series is "The Wrangler and The Rich Girl", which is the oldest brother Garth's story. His story actually begins near the end of this one, so it's kind of a must read. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th (Rancher and the Runaway, Cowboy and the Princess, and Wrangler and the Rich Girl), all fairly short novels, may also be purchased in full in the 3 -in 1 book, "Hawk's Way Bachelors". The first one, "Honey and the Hired Hand is also included in a 3-in-1 book, called "Hawk's Way Rouges", which has 2 other stories that will follow later on.
If your looking for a little adventure, and some great romance, Joan Johnston won't let you down.
Other series are "Sisters of the Lone Star" and "The Bittercreek Series". And if you are not ready for an entire series, try some of her Historical Romance Westerns. A good one to start with is "No Longer a Stranger"
Enjoy the read...Laurie
:).......2001-02-13
Another Hawk's Way story. This is not the best one in the series, but it is still good. Faron Whitelaw finds out the truth about his parents, he was the result of an affair that his mother had. If you read the other books than you will understand how close the Whitelaws are, and how much it hurt Faron to realize his father was someone else. Faron found out who he was when his birth father died and left Faron half of his estate. The other half belongs to Faron's stepmother. Only Faron's idea of a stepmother is not what he gets when he meets Belinda. She is young and beautiful. He figured Belinda for a gold digging princess, but for him to know the truth means that he will have to know the type of man that his birth father was. Belinda and Faron find themselves drawn to each other. They also have a little help from Farons "new" grandmother. There is a lot going on in this story, but it is a quick and easy read. Another Whitelaw is always worth reading about.

A Funny, Delightful Read.......2004-02-13
This is well written book with the story of a marriage of convenience with a twist - he doesn't know that she's a royal princess. Princess Josephene Eugenie Beatrix Marguerite Isabeau Francoeur (aka "Josie") is the royal princess and heir to the throne of Montclaire. According to the laws of Montclaire, she must marry by her 25th birthday. Since she has no fiance in sight, her father has picked one for her, Alphonse Picquet who is older than her father, fat and ugly, and incidentallty the fifth richest man in France. It seems that Montclaire is in a bit of financial trouble, and this marriage will provide a double benefit.
The trouble is the Princess doesn't want to marry Alphonse. She enlists the aid of her friend, Melissa, to find her a husband asap. With Melissa's encouragement she decides to approach a man to be her "platonic" husband for a fee. The groom-to-be turns out to be Buck Buchanan, rodeo star bronc rider. "Josie" - as he knows the Princess - keeps her royal status secret. Buck has his own secret and while he agrees to go along with the marriage of convenience, the groom has a real honeymoon in mind.
The ending is delightful A great read - highly recommended.
