Book Description
Jerry Garcia, the lead guitarist, singer, and alleged leader of the Grateful Dead, became an icon of the 60s youth movement. It was well-known that Jerry was a huge fan, and probably considered himself a player, of old-time American music, from mountain fiddle and banjo music, to English ballads, to jug band music to bluegrass and blues, and more. On the "Shady Grove" recordings one can hear the deep commitment, respect, and love Jerry had for this traditional American music. He's very faithful to the original artists' music. That may be surprising if you expect more of an ego-driven "my version" approach from one the biggest rock stars ever. What you have here is a vibrant collection of wonderful traditional American songs, from a great variety of genres, played in a style closely based on their traditional sources. Of course within those parameters we hear wonderful and personal readings of the tunes from both Jerry and mandolinist David Grisman. Dix Bruce has carefully transcribed many of Jerry's solos from the album, trying to determine not just what he was playing but how he was playing it. Melodies, tablature, lyrics, and chords are included in arrangements designed to be playable on the guitar while presenting the melodies as closely as possible. Jerry's banjo solos are transcribed here for guitar.

Book Description
Broke Neck, Kentucky, lies deep in Appalachia. Its people are descendents of the men and women who settled the country in Revolutionary War times, and their ways have not changed much in the past two hundred years. Shady Grove chronicles the riotous adventures and misadventures of Broke Neck's Fowler clan, among them Frony, the feisty and articulate widow who narrates the tale, and Sudley, a farmer whose hound dogs tree a visiting preacher.
Janice Holt Giles, a transplant to Appalachia, shows us the region's character through the story of a people who don't like to walk proud but will always stand by their own. Shady Grove, her last book of fiction about her adopted Kentucky homeland, is engaging not only as a cultural document, but also as a novel that makes us laugh and touches our hearts.
Long out of print, Shady Grove is available again for new and veteran readers of Janice Holt Giles.

A Fun READ!.......2007-05-12
Shady Grove is the funniest book I have ever read. I found it at the library and after reading it, I had to have one of my very own. My husband had to read it after he heard me laughing so hard as I read it. He laughed all the time he was reading it and when he finished it, he wanted to buy one for his brother. I have also bought 4 others to give as gifts. Everyone I have introduced Shady Grove to has had a ball reading it. If you are looking for a page turner, light, funny book....Shady Grove is the book for you!

This is on my list of Most Favorite Books Ever! I've looked for SHADY GROVE for years as a gift for people I love, but it's been long out of print. Thank goodness it's again available. The book, which is about the Sudley Fowler family of Broke Neck, Ky, including their relationships--regular and irregular---moonshining, Lonelyhearts letters, government men, picking and grinning, hound dogs, getting "on the draw," and that old time relgion.
Mostly, though, it's about a way of life unique in all the world, and there's a belly laugh on every page.
Oh, gentlemen, you are mortally going to love this one!
You can't read this book without laughing out loud........1999-11-18
I love this book. It is the funniest book that I have ever read. I could just picture them running up on that porch in that old car that was out of control. Every time I get slightly depressed, I re-read this book. I will always have a copy. It's good medicine.
This is the funniest book I have ever read........1999-08-31
This is the funniest book I have ever read. After reading the first page, I could not put it down. I wanted to know why that preacher wound up with a guitar around his neck. I wanted to know why the television crew was there in Broke Neck. This book is for everyone who enjoys a good laugh. It is just pure fun from the first page to the last.

Very highly recommended and rewarding reading.......2001-02-13
Bound For Shady Grove is Steven Harvey's celebration of the music arising from the southern Appalachian mountain communities. Harvey's essays derive from the four seasons of a life in music. The early pieces describe playing music in the log house of friends born and raised in the mountains, or entering a banjo contest and losing with style. Then there are his essays about fiddles and the devil, homemade instruments and homemade weapons, a trip to England to trace mountain songs back to their elusive sources. As Bound For Shady Grover progresses, the mood darkens, with essays exploring the connection between music and resentment, loss, and death. Harvey's explorations showcase descriptions of music, hills, and people, and take the reader just where the music and the mountains took him. Bound For Shady Grove is very highly recommended and rewarding reading for students of Appalachian history, culture, and music.

'Bound for Shady Grove' is a collection of personal insites into music and life. The music and words of some Appalachian ballads are woven with events in Steven Harvey's life, playing in a banjo competition, a trip to England, recovering from heart surgery. I found an instant kinship in his outlook.
Book Description
When her husband leaves her for a younger woman, Rose Franklin buys a camper and sets offaway from her heartache and anger. She finds herself spending a couple of days in Shady Grove, a camp site in North Carolina. While there, a respected and well-liked man in the community seems to commit suicide for no apparent reason. Could it somehow be connected to the ancient slave burial ground that he was researching? As Rose gets to know the characters of this small community she begins to unravel the mystery of why a man loses his faith and the consequences of his loss. Down by the Riverside marks the debut of a fresh new talent who can deftly weave strains of spirituality and redemption into an artfully realized mystery.

mystery and murder.......2007-08-28
The author, Jackie Lynn, (actual name Lynne Hinton--Friendship Cake, etc.) has delivered a powerful story about a recent divorcee who is on her way to "some other life", when her truck breaks down and she is forced to spend a week at a campground run by ex-cons. In the midst of her stay she comes across a possible murder that local police have dubbed a suicide. The heroine becomes curious about the death, and hears rumors about unmarked graves and buried gold in the area. When she begins to investigate on her own, she finds much more than she was looking for, and a few things she never expected!
Lynn uses a cast of colorful characters and a softly, poetic style of storytelling to uncover the mystery and reveal that sometimes things are not as they seem, especially on the outside. This book is strongly character driven and teasingly secretive in all the right places. I found it to be a fast and enjoyable read.
You'll want more of Jackie Lynn's mysteries.......2007-06-12
Jackie Lynn also writes under the name Lynne Hinton. Her novels, such as Friendship Cake and Hope Springs, have inspired and been enjoyed by many readers. They're what I like to call `feel good' novels.
Rose decided, in a split second, that she was going to claim her mother's name. In the future she would be called Rose Franklin. Rose couldn't have a baby, her husband left her for a blond and then they divorced. Rose Franklin is reeling from the aftershock of a life that took a direction she'd never intended.
But Rose has a camper and a getaway plan. She fills the camper with her meager belongings and heads west from North Carolina. When her 1987 Ford Bronco conks out in West Memphis, Arkansas, she's forced to stay for a few days at the Shady Grove campsite on the banks of the Mississippi River. But there's trouble at Shady Grove. A well-liked man, the local undertaker, Lawrence Franklin, committed suicide for no apparent reason.
Rose doesn't buy the suicide idea and decides to investigate the death. Her investigation leads her to believe that Lawrence Franklin was murdered. And the murder had something to do with an old slave burial site and some long-lost treasure.
On the surface, Jackie Lynn has written a cozy mystery. But it's really more than that. It's a delightful character study about a group of people bound together because of where their life journey has taken them. Rose meets a family with a sick child, a man called Tom Sawyer, the unusual campground owners and their employee and various other minor players who are so real they seem to jump off the page. Ultimately, for Rose, it's about self-knowledge, survival in the face of loss and her personal spiritual journey.
Armchair Interviews says: Read Down By the Riverside and you'll want more of Jackie Lynn's mysteries.
Sweet and Simple.......2007-01-21
I confess: I chose this book from the shelf because of the sweet watercolor painting on the jacket (I paint when I can book the books down.) At first I thought I would not like it: the plot seemed pat (see other reviews for a summary) and the mystery aspect especially so. But I was soon pleased and touched by the story, as sweet and simple as the picture on the cover. The mystery turns out to be about an interesting aspect of Mississippi River history, but the mystery is not the point; this is a book about relationship and kinship, about trust and love and giving, and about families and how we find them. It's not Great Literature, and some will be turned off by the occasional visit of Angels from the Other Side, but I'm glad I was brought to it and glad I stayed.
delightful whodunit .......2006-06-17
Leaving behind a philandering husband with a full refrigerator and his much younger woman in North Carolina, Rose Franklin (dropping her married name) buys a camper and sets off for Arizona. However, she has some vehicle trouble so she stops in West Memphis, Arkansas, staying at the Shady Grove Campground, until repairs can be made.
The locals greet her with the news that the highly regarded undertaker, Lawrence Franklin V committed suicide three days before Rose parked her camper. Rose hears more tales about the late Lawrence and the four generations of Franklins that preceded him. She begins to doubt that the man killed himself especially since he was reportedly excited about research he was doing into a slave cemetery. Unable to resist, Rose decides it is time for her to give back to these caring people and uncover the truth, but will learn much more especially about her inner self than just how and why number five died.
DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE is a delightful whodunit that is more of a coming of age (middle age that is) character study in which the amateur sleuth learns just who she is. The story line is fun to follow as the eccentric local flavor adds spice to Rose's personal discover of self-actualization. Though occasionally the tale turns discordantly flowery, Jackie Lynn provides a deep Mississippi mystery starring a likable woman who starts to obtain a sense of achievement, redemption, and worth.

Book Description
When her husband left her for a younger woman, Rose Franklin bought a camper and started traveling. Eventually, she put down roots in Shady Grove, a campsite along the Mississippi River in West Memphis, Arkansas, where she has lived for six months now. Since she solved the murder of Lawrence Franklin, life has been quiet: she is enjoying her new friends, life next to the river, and a blossoming romance with neighbor Thomas Sawyer.
But when Rose discovers a mysterious camper from New Mexico dead in his trailer, she finds herself in the middle of another mystery. American Indian artifacts, an ancient cultural history, and a passage to grace are at stake as Rose unravels the murder, while at the same time comes to terms with a visit from her ex-husband and her father’s declining health.
Jacob’s Ladder is a thoughtful follow up to Down by the Riverside, featuring a curious and spiritual sleuth.

---Philip Gulley, author of Home to Harmony
“In Jacob’s Ladder, Jackie Lynn has reprised her wonderful cast of West Memphis riverbank dwellers. It’s a fast-paced, funny ride down the river with cleverly drawn characters worthy of the journey.”
---Sallie Bissell, author of In the Forest of Harm
“Jacob’s Ladder is perfect light reading for sleepless nights and an exploration into the concept of innocence rewarded.”
---Katherine Valentine, author of The Haunted Rectory, and the award-winning Dorsetville series
“Lynn elevates the genre with her blend of philosophy, romance, spirituality, and elegant writing.... This is a truly lovely book to be read slowly, savoring life by the river in the cool shade.”

Wonderfu and intriquing characters .......2007-07-13
It's been six months since Rose Franklin arrived in West Memphis, Arkansas. She ended up on the banks of the Mississippi River at the Shady Grove campground after her Ford Bronco broke down. She solved a murder and since then, it's been pretty quiet.
Rose has settled into the daily ebb and flow of life at Shady Grove. She's helping Mary who runs the campground, has made friends and is enjoying a romance with a local man.
But one night a stranger from New Mexico, Jacob Sunspeaker, drove into the campground and parked his travel trailer in a part of the campground that wasn't used. The next morning, Jacob's dog is found wandering around. With the dogs help, Rose finds Jacob murdered in his trailer.
A silver bracelet Rose finds on the ground near the trailer is the only clue to Jacob's murder. Her curiosity is piqued and she becomes determined to solve the crime. But along the way she will encounter Indian artifacts, some danger, and she will be forced to face her father's imminent death. The relationship was never a good one and will challenge her ability to forgive. But in facing her father's coming death, Rose will also have to interrupt her romance. You'll wonder if that is for a brief time or forever.
Once again Jackie Lynn has given her fans an interesting and unique mystery that is made better by the intriguing characters she plants in her novels. I can't wait for the next Shady Grove Mystery.

:) Luved it! :).......2007-02-21
This book was a great ending for the Legends trilogy! It is beautifully written and touches your heart. I got really scared when Caramon and Tas went into the future and saw Caramon's corpse. The world couldn't end! But I luved the ending, where it teaches a valuable lesson: there is good in even the most evil people.
Test of the Twins (Dragonlance Legends, Vol 3).......2007-02-20
Loved the book, LOVED it, but very very disappointed that the saga doesn't continue forward from this spot. There are other books that pick up later on (much later) but naturally I'd like to see a smooth segue' into the next segment of this same tale. Oh, well...the series and this book are still well worth reading.
Not what I thought.......2006-01-06
This book wasn't what I had in mind and I was sorely disappointed in it. I thought this book was going to have a twist to it and that Raistlin was going to be persuaded into the good side by Crysania at the end or that he was going to turn back to were he left her. I also think that the author should have gave Raistlin some love and caring at the end. I was touched by how Margaret Weis wrote that Raistlin was blinded by tears, but I was also wondering why he didn't just go with them at the first place. I think that there should totally be more love and a bit less death.
Besides this point about Raistlin, the book was OK, but I don't think it was better than the two others. I have to give props to the painter of the cover though; his paintings for Margaret Weis' books are spectacular and make everything more realistic. The conclusion was strong with emotion, but to me, it wasn't the best conclusion to fit the other two incredible books.
Saving a soul.......2004-10-20
Test of the twins, the concluding novel in the Dragonlance Legends trilogy, is the story of "saving a soul". The story is, in my opinion actually the concluding novel in the six volume series compiled of both the Dragonlance Chronicles and the Legends. The novel effectively and entertainingly ties off nearly all of the loose ends and left me with a distict feeling of completeness.
In the author's own words, the book is about "saving a soul". The reader is, and was in previous editions, led to believe that it is Raistlin's soul that needs saving, however it is notl; it is his twins'.
Caramon, the twin, is the one who needs saving. He is Raistlin's opposite and keeping with the theme of the series, his soul must be saved by the light in order to balance the evil of Raistlin.
The authors also do a reasonable job of dealing with time travel. The pebble, Tasselhoff, is superb in his role and is easily the "best" character in the series, with Fizban coming a close second. Fizban in his limited role, almost seems as a kender himself.
About the only part of the novel that I did not like was the limited definition of magic. The term casting of a spell means nothing more than it says, more details are needed.
I would recommend this novel and series to anyone looking for an easy, fun, engaging read!
THE BEST!!!.......2004-06-06
The Legends Trilogy- the Time of The Twins, the War of the Twins, and Test of the Twins, is the sequel to The Chronicles Trilogy- Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, and Dragons of Spring Dawning, which brings to life the ultimate battle between Good and Evil in the magical World of Krynn. The books are so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another plane of existence and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. The authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman have truly outdone themselves and have presented us with a masterpiece of literature the likes of which we have seen only in JRR Tolkien's work and RA Salvatore's The Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies. Duty, honor, bravery, magic, dragons and heroes are all about. One should seriously start thinking about maybe turning them into movies...

Another Dragonlance masterpeice!.......2007-10-06
Ever since my bf introduced me to Dragonlance I have been reading them non stop. These 3 books are awesome! They really are very action packed and make you sit back and go WOW. I didnt get sad with these 3 books at all I was more sucked in and sometimes got so outraged by the actions of some of the evil people (you know who Im talking about) These are a must read.
Everything good fantasy should be.......2001-10-18
It is almost impossible to describe how wonderful this book is. There is nothing about it that is not absolutly perfect. It is absolutly incredible what Margaret Weis and Tracy HIckman have written. I wish I could sit here and type out the whole plot, but unfortunatly, I can't. But I will say this. The characters are beyond belife. Anybody who didn't worship Raistlin before will now. He is most definatly the greatest fantasy character ever written. Crysania is good too, especially in Test of the Twins. Dalamar Nightson, Raistlin's apprentice, is one of the better characters, and is part of why this trilogy is so incredible. No one has ever written anythig close to this. Everyone should read this book, it is so wonderful. Personnaly, I've read it so many time I can almost recite it, and it never gets worse. Please, for the love of Raistlin, BUY THIS BOOK.
Do not buy these books!.......2000-05-20
Off limits! Never buy these wonderful adventures. If you do, you will ever after be disappointed in everything else you read. It's truly sad to stumble through the rest of your life searching for a comparable read as lively and passionate as this series by the masters of adventure, Weis and Hickman. OK, you've been warned.
Fantastic Novel!.......2000-03-14
By far, these are the best set of books that I have read in a VERY long time. I agree with some of the other people that the contents, especially the ending should NOT be reveiled in an email. I think that such a wonderful book should be read by the reader & not told to you by some goof. Experience the wonderful world of Krynn for yourself & you'll find you'll be back again & again & again.... :) Enjoy them all but start with Chronicles first! :)
NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE IT!.......1999-06-18
If you are reading this and thinking about buying, STOP READING THIS AND DO IT. I really can't think of any better book to read (other than the Chronicles) to get you started on fantasy. These books are easier to read and understand than most Tolkien novels. Caramon and Raistlin show the true struggle between Good, Evil, Love and Hate. Tasslehoff Burrfoot, our friendly Kender, also plays a MAJOR role, which I am glad to say. Just one more word......AWESOME!

A good read!.......2007-09-25
I love Dragonlance a lot! This trilogy was not as interesting as the first one Cronicles. however it was very good. If you like Raislin and the story of him searching to gain more magical power than this is the trilogy for you. A must for Dragonlance fans.

It doesn't matter what kind of books you like. Youll love the Chronicles and Legends trilogies.
SIMPLY AMAZING.......2006-11-12
Margret Weis and Tracy Hickam simply wrote the best six books I've ever read. Cronicles and Legends are great for any reader who enjoys a world of adventure. Every theme that you can find in a movie are in these books. Currently deployed, I finished the books in about a week for each one. If you love fantasy novels, this is the way to go!
Twins.......2006-11-10
My son could hardly put this set of books down. He read 5 of the the Dragonlance books in 3 months with is a seriously amazing thing for him!
Dragonlance top 3.......2006-11-05
These books along with The Soulforge are by far the best in the Dragonlance saga. Maybe I am partial to Raistlin but I find that the character is one of the most interesting in all D&D novels and the work that Weiss puts into him really pays off.
And time travelling is always a plus !
