First of all, I love Maxine. I give her cards for every occasion...well, most occasions that is. She is just so open, to the point...sort of like "open mouth insert foot", yet she does not care. I bought this book for my mother when my dad was in the hospital. I thought it would make her laugh & I was right. It really helped to take the tension off. I guess you have to appreciate Maxine for her "sour" attitude. She has a come back for every thing and in this doggie dog world it sometimes pays off to be a little like her.

How Many Roads: A Novel.......2004-09-25
Once again, I was completely captivated by Dean Hughes and his continuation of the Thomas family story. His history and insights in the turbulant times of the 60's opened my eyes to the many trials people faced.
Book Description
With the deep emotion and insight of “a true storyteller” (Richard Eder, Los Angeles Times), Christopher Tilghman, the author of the acclaimed
Mason’s Retreat and
In a Father’s Place, has written a powerful new novel of men and women, fathers and families.
Eric Alwin has gone to visit his elderly father, a once commanding and charismatic Maryland senator who has seen his public service soured–and his family broken–by a sex scandal. Realizing that his own unfaithfulness, his disaffection with his career and marriage, seem to be a continuation of a family pattern, Eric is astonished to find his father proposing a bold expedition.
The ensuing trip through the Deep South and the American heartland becomes both a journey into the emotional truth of the Alwin family and a breakthrough into a new kind of resilience and understanding, and love. Along the way, Eric will know anew not only his mother, Audrey, but his sisters, Alice and Poppy, and his own wife and son. As he discovers the surprising secret behind the scandal that defined his father’s fate, he will also realize what he must do to shape a more authentic and coherent life for himself.
Christopher Tilghman’s
Roads of the Heart is a brilliant achievement by an author who, grappling with the strains and discords of contemporary American culture, achieves a special understanding of how family members love and lose and find one another every day.

¿Once again, Chris Tilghman displays his talent for plumbing the depths of family life and for showing just how hard how it can be to escape the past, both our own and our family's.

Roads of the Heart glows, both with Christopher Tilghman's beautiful language, and with his graceful, compassionate meditations on the family. A Great Read.......2004-12-21
Christopher Tilghman's "Roads of the Heart" is one of the best books I have read in a long time. The tightly written novel describes a family's patriarch who, weeks from his death, manages to re-connect a geographically and emotionally dispersed family when he allows his love for them to trump decades of disregard.
I stumbled upon the book in a local store and read it in a couple of sittings. I cannot understand why it has not been more widely reviewed and critically acclaimed. I want to encourage Tighlman to keep at his important writing; to maybe find a new agent; and to encourage his publisher to get the word out about the works of a most skilled writer.
I want more.

1ST PARAGRAPH: Clifton Brant believed himself to be only one of innumerable flying grains of human dust in a world gone mad. And among these grains he knew himself to be a misfit. For which reason he was walking the wide highway from Brantford Town in Ontario to the ancient city of Quebec on the St. Lawrence, an unimportant matter of seven hundred miles or so, not counting the distance he would travel in crossing and recrossing the road on the way.

The final installment in Weis and Hickman's Chronicles series--Dragonlance's undisputed must-read trilogy--brings on the main event: the Companions vs. the dragons in a knock-down drag-out at the iron works of Pax Tharkas, as the fate of Krynn hangs in the balance. They've mastered the Orbs and picked up the Dragonlance (see Dragons of Winter Night), and things are looking pretty good with the return of the good metallic dragons. But the band soon learns they must do battle with their own inner conflicts if they ever hope to defeat the Dark Queen Takhisis. A bang-up conclusion to Dragonlance's best-loved trilogy. --Paul Hughes
Book Description
The war against the dragon minions of Queen Takhisis rages on. Armed with the mysterious, magical dragon orbs and the shining, silver dragonlance, the companions bring hope to the world. But now, in the dawn of a new day, the dark secrets that have long shadowed the hearts of the friends come to the light. Betrayal, treachery, frailty, and weakness will nearly destroy all that they have accomplished.
The greatest battle they have left to fight is within each of them.
Yet, in the end, they will be heroes.

The Death And Rebirth Of The Companions - Krynn In Balance.......2007-07-16
There is an expectation of a happy ending with every fantasy novel and series. Dragons Of Spring Dawning, the conclusion of the Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy, presents a more realistic ending which leaves much room for the saga and the heroes to roam.
With death, destruction, discovery and desperation looming and lurking at every turn The Everman, Tanis, Laurana, Tas, Flint, Caramon and Raistlin take centre stage to play their part in a drama which now actively includes Kitiara in a surprise twist. Wars rage and sorrows reign as Raistlin's prophecy regarding the death and separation of the fellows comes true.
Spring Dawning does have major flaws, as did its two prequels, in that coincidences flow illogically at every turn (the dismissal of the dragons by Fizban, the defeated magic of a Dragon Highlord at a crucial time or the appointment of Lauranathalasa) and the book still cannot rid itself of allusions and comparisons to The Lord Of The Rings (the metaphysical presence of The Dark Queen is just one instance) trilogy. Nevertheless, the ingredients for an exciting and satisfactory read are present here in more potent quantities than in volumes one and two.
The book does answer many nagging questions and puts to rest several mysteries, although there is much that still goes unexplained. Mystery, magic, myth and mages come together in an expansive and enchanting land and become sources for more fantasy trilogies to come.
A Landscape of Cracked Mirrors in the Soul.......2007-07-05
An Excerpt from the novel:
"Insane, desperate rage twisted Tanis's face. Somehow he'd make Raistlin listen to reason! Somehow they would all use this strange magic to escape! Tanis started forward, then stopped. From nowhere - - - seemingly - - - had come a small silver dagger, long concealed, fastened to the mage's wrist by a cunningly designed leather thong.
`All right,' Tanis said, breathing heavily. "You'd kill me without a second thought. But what about your brother? Caramon, stop him!
Caramon took a step toward his twin. Raistlin raised the silver dagger warningly.
`Don't make him come near me, Tanis,' Raistlin said. `I assure you. I am capable of this, truly. What I have sought all my life is within my grasp. I will let nothing stop me. Look at Caramon's face, Tanis! He knows! I killed him once. I can do it again . . .'
The War of the Lance nears its end . . . for good . . . or for evil . . .
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Long years of desperate warfare are now nearing an end; the eternal battle between good and evil has long been waged over the face of Krynn and now the tumultuous emotions of a lifetime are crashing around our beleaguered cast of characters. Some will be tempted to join the ranks of the dark side, others will loose their life warring against the forces of evil, and still others will continue to fight against the minions of Takhisis, goddess of destruction. Along the way, our characters must overcome treachery, despair, and one of the bleakest winters of their lives. Will the power of good overcome, or will the dragons inherit the eart?. For good or evil the dye is cast and all of Krynn must pay the eternal price.
Once again, the reader reunites with their favourite characters. Tanis, Raistlin, Strum, Caramon, Tas, Flint, Laurana, Riverwind, Goldmoon, and the delightfully doddery old mage, the enigmatic Fizban all meet once again to battle the forces of darkness and console each other along the way. However, there are many surprises in store for our careworn group of heroes. Tanis is torn between his love for Laurana, the gentle elf maiden and Kitiara, the ambitions dragon highlord and follower of Takhisis. Meanwhile, Raistlin has discovered a new magical talent that could be the key to his future, or the destruction of everything. Loyalties are stretched and breached, love is tried to the utmost, hatred is kindled, as the entire force of Krynn is rallied to fight the coming onslaught of dragons, our characters must not only confront these beasts of doom, but their own inner turmoils and disloyalties as well. The war is not only for the salvation of Krynn, but for the redemption of the soul. Nothing will ever be the same again.
Not only do we, the public of readers, become drawn into the story by the fast paced action and the stunning revelations, but the sheer emotional depth and the realistic nature of the cast of vivid characters is what truly makes this tale classic literature. While the war rages on the outside, we are allowed to not only witness its irrevocable destruction of Krynn, but to see first hand how this degeneration of the world effects the characters we have come to love as family. How can we not weep as Raistlin begins his long fall from grace? How can we not experience Tanis's emotional turmoil over his love life? How can we not respect and admire Laurana, the Golden General, who risks everything for a man who no longer loves her? All these things and more culminate to produce an astoundingly complex and highly emotional tale that will leave the reader crying during many segments. Unforeseen betrayals, love lost, hopes destroyed, magic discovered, all these things must have their toll on the characters that we have come to love and admire. While they may not all be human, they have distinctly human emotion and desires creating what can truly be called modern literature at its finest. It would be impossible for the reader to remain unaffected by the emotions of Dragonlance. It would also be equally impossible for the reader to even begin to guess what outcome, whether good or evil, would come from our characters' actions and reactions. Truly, Dragons of Spring Dawning is as emotional as it is unpredictable. This is one story that cannot fail to draw the reader in.
The sheer ingenuity of the plot and the extreme emotional depth displayed, is complemented by a rich and complex storyline, edge-of-the-seat action and suspense, and a terrifying cast of vitriolic villains. While the protagonists are deeply cherished by the reader, the villains make an equal, although opposite impression, truly engaging all of the reader's emotions, both love and hate. What could be more epic! Once again, we are treated to modern literature at its finest.
Also, Dragons of Spring Dawning, is complemented with a wonderful rich and descriptive writing style that brings the magical world of Krynn vividly to life. Yet another virtue that Dragonlance can boast.
In Conclusion: This is to be Krynn's bleakest hour. An hour when the decisions of a moment will affect a lifetime. An hour when sides must be chosen forever. An hour when love and hate, desire and despair, culminate into one heady brew to create an unforgettable epic that is just as emotionally demanding as it is imaginatively captivating. All of Krynn hangs in the balance and it is up to our beleaguered group of heroes to save their lost and dying world. Rich in characterization, writing, imagination, and epic in scope and storytelling, this is one tale not to be missed. Highly recommended.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!
Dragons of Spring Dawning is the final volume in the Chronicles Trilogy. At the beginning of the book the forces of good are in disarray and headed for defeat at the hands of the evil Dragonarmies. However, since this is the last book in the trilogy you just know that things are going to turn around. First Laurana is named commander of the Knights around Palanthas and then her brother, Gilthanas, returns with the good dragons. After the good dragons are equipped with the dragonlances they drive the dragonarmies south in disorder. However, the blue Dragon highlord Kitiara has a trick up her sleeve. She preys upon Laurana's love for Tanis Half-Elven to capture the elven general; Kit plans to sacrifice Laurana to the evil goddess, Takahsis, and then give her soul to her death knight Lord Soth. When Tanis learns of this dastardly plot he leads the other companions to Nereka to free Laurana. Tanis also has an ace in the hole as he has managed to find Berem the Everman, who has a strange jewel in his chest that is preventing the evil goddess from returning. In the end, Tanis manages to rescue Laurana, Berem returns his jewel and prevents the return of the evil goddess and Raistlin turns to the dark robes.
For the most part this book is a very satisfying conclusion to the series. We reach a measure of resolution with all of the major characters (some sadder then others) and we get a glimpse of what their future will be like. However, in some ways the ending is a bit too...neat. Why does Berem's jewel hold such power over a Goddess? How does his sister's death effect anything? Is it because of his sister's love that the entrance to the world is blocked? I don't get it and it is never completely explained. Also the fact that Fizban, the bumbling wizard who has been following them around for almost a year, turns out to be the god Paladine. That's a little too good to be true. And if he was a god, why not have some more powerful magic or something? Other then that this was a good book.
In conclusion, I am giving this book four stars. The one star that it lost is for the ending. A better ending would have put a better cap on a magnificent trilogy.

NEXT TO LORD OF THE RINGS, ELRIC AND CONAN THIS IS FANTASY AT IT'S BEST!!!.......2007-07-24
AS MENTIONED ABOVE NEXT TO LORD OF THE RINGS, ELRIC AND CONAN THIS IS FANTASY AT IT'S BEST!!! Speaking of which this should be made into a movie as soon as possible. However only with one condition that the director be one as passionate as Peter Jackson was about Lord of the Rings or Sam keith with Spiderman. The director must know and want to adhere to the essence of the book, if this is done then this will be as magnificent as the Lord of the Rings movie. THey must use a lot of special effects, no expense spared but by all means be intelligent and wise in how to get the finest effects on the screen, you will always be compared to Lord of the Rings so give them a run for the money. The cast must be well chosen, they can be little or unknown actors but must be excellent actors none the less, the costumes and the photography, the architecture all counts, nothing must be overlooked and the producers and director or directors must work closely and seamlessly together with one another and most especially with the writers. I recommend Weta workshop the same that did the special effects on Lord of the rings, Richard Taylor and his fine crew. There can be a total of 9 or even 12 films if all is successcessful, yes the soulforge trilogy, and the dragons of a summer flame trilogy as well as dragons gate can all follow suite, yet in order not to loose the audience, a strict adherence to this format must be followed and all future directors would have to consult with the first successful directors and collaborate with them and learn, enhance the techniques and methods to build on the blockbuster effect and all of these have this immense potential. The original Dragonlance trilogy is my favorite, but the Raistlin is an awesome character and can have his own movie, Storm brightblade, Tanis half-elven, the elves, this is a truly fun and incredible saga and with care, attention and love the movie can be it's equal.
Therefore I challenge you great and inspired Producers, Directors, Screen writers (who will work tightly with the Authors, unless the directors will assume this role as Peter Jackson did), and all you magnificent Actors, Photographers, set designers, sound effects technicians and all the every last part of you to come forth and bring this saga to life and then one Last thing Make the ELRIC MOVIE WITH THE SAME EXCELLENCE. I SALUTE YOU!!!
It seems to me, alot of people miss the point of this series........2007-05-01
I read the Chronicles years ago when they first came out onto bookshelves, desperate for something new to read. I quickly fell in love with this series. I've seen numerous people tear the characters apart. I won't defend them here, because everyone is entitled to their own opinions. The stories, whether written by Weiss & Hickman, or other writers of this series are well done. When I moved from Fl to Ga, I gave most of my fantasy book collection away to my nephews. They both loved this series as well. I'm buying them again to let my daughter read them. I'm glad the gift sets like this are available, as you can get the triplets at one time. They keep her occupied for a while. And while some readers may have been delighted by Kitiara killing Sturm, I was more interested by Lord Soth, a rather minor character in this series, and Raistlin who actually shows some redeeming qualities later on in other volumes. this series is good for beginners into the realm of fantasy and dragon. I found it more entertaining than Dragonriders of Pern, and to me, the characters much more vibrant. I highly recommend this series to parents with kids of the ages 12 and up who are interested in this genre. It is well worth the expense to keep them reading and entertained.
Great gift set.......2007-03-20
The product content is of corse fabulous and the vender was great. The product arived in perfect condition and ahead of schedule.

Entertaining, but flawed........2007-02-18
These books were entertaining page-turners; the story wasn't completely original but it definetly made me want to keep reading. Some of the characters (such as the mysterious mage Raistlin and the annoying kender Tas) were very interesting and well-drawn; others (such as Sturm, Flint, and even Tanis at times) felt flat.
I'll start with Sturm. (Don't keep reading if you don't want any spoilers.)It was stated WAY too many times that 'honor was his life.' He was so honorable that he became boring; I was actually happy when a far more interesting character, Kitiara, killed him on top of a Tower.
Flint, I felt, was the requisite Dwarf. It is Ok for a fantasy novel to not have dwarves. Flint never really added all that much to the story, and when he died in Godshome I felt like all the characters were crying over a paper cut.
Physically, the world of Krynn had its pros and cons. The continent of Ansalon where the story takes place is in the southern hemisphere, which I found to be rather original. The cities, however, seemed by and large the same. Whether in ruins or still standing, the vast majority of all the major settlements were supposed to be breathtakingly beautiful. This got old after a while; the hardscrabble harbor of Flotsam actually stood out more in my mind than all the glorious archtecture and whatnot.
The map really irked me, mostly because it did not show where Sancrist was. The one that came with the first volume was particularly hard to decipher.
None of that bothered me nearly as much, however as the continous use of deux ex machina. The most glaring example of this is the whole 'Whoever wears the Crown rules' debacle at the end of the third volume. What is this 'Crown?' Where did it come from and why was it never mentioned before?
The ending was ridiculously open-ended. NOTHING CHANGED. Ok, so Takhisis and Paladine are back in thier respective heavens. But the dragons were still around, Raistlin's deux ex machina moment was completely unexplained, and the Gilthanas/Silvara relationship was completely forgotten. I understand there are sequels (many of them), but I felt jipped. And why were the Disks of Mishakal (sp) so important?
This being said, Dragonlance has it's strong points. The part about how mages keep forgetting spells was clever, as was the idea of kenders (they're immune to fear, they steal things, etc.) I wouldn't say these books are a must-read, but they're entertaining and I would reccomend them to any fantasy fans.
Dragonlance tops my list..........2007-02-09
I recently picked up a copy of the first book in the War of Souls series because a friend brought it into work in a box of other books. I began to read it and realized I really had to have the original books in this series. So I put it away and bought the first book in the Dragonlance Chronicles. I am completely hooked on this series now. These have got to be the best Fantasy novels I have read in a very long time. They have action, adventure, humor, romance, horror... everything you can ask for in a fantasy novel. I would give these way over a 10 if I could but I have to settle for 5 stars. I have no idea how I missed these books over the years they are fantastic... :)
