Wonderful/ Maravilloso.......2004-09-17

The first book written about this wonderful solar phenomenon of equinox in mexican pyramids, the result of the application of mathematics, astronomy and architecture into religion. The author has dedicated four years to his investigation in order to give a knowledge for all mankind. A lot of people visit Chichén Itzá in Yucatán State each year waiting for the descent of Kukulcan (the fire serpent)in the afternoon hours, something unique in the world !!!

Curious, and very fun to read, so much details in it!.......1996-11-30

This is a book that I recommend to anyone who is baffled by the ancient mexican civilization and wants to know how it got discovered and who were the primary players in bringing it to public attention. Also, this gives a very good view of how in the name of religion, bunch of priests destroyed all records of once magnificent cultur and those who went after finding the last remaining books or parchments that could give a clue behind all that mysterious writings on the walls of ruins in mexico. It is a book full of details with awsome pictures in it. I think the author has collected a ton of evidence in this book to back up his ideas and other opinions about mysteries of mexican pyramids

pretty good.......2004-10-04

In my opinion, Winds of Fury was the best in the trilogy. This is a well written fantasy novel, rated high in the books that i have read, although not the best. Mercedes Lackey did well in her development of the characters and plot. I particularly liked the development of An'desha. With the long overdue end of Falconsbane she skillfully brought in a new character who easily wins the heart of readers. Her use of figurative language in metaphors and similes works well to describe places and events, and her work contains proverbs that tell truths. Although I liked the book and found it believable and well developed, some of the dialogue she uses is a bit awkward. It does not happen often but enough to be noticable. Overall, her message of good triumphing over evil once again works well in her plot, along with the light romantic interludes that give the novel a sentimental quality.

It was worth reading the first two books for this........2004-08-29

The first two books were OK at best but this one certainly caught my interest. Instead of being so very ickily sex oriented romance, this one focused on tenderness and you actually liking the couples.

Not to mention - VANYEL!!!

This was clearly the best of the three in this triology.

It had lovely, leisurely romantic interludes plus fast paced action. I was absolutely glued to it.

This trilogy is quite liberal socially. The women are effective warriors and often the leaders while the men typically follow. Gay relationships are accepted as equal with straight ones. One of the lead good guys is gay.

It's really neat how Elspeth and Darkwind work together as a team romantically, magically, and militarily. Sigh. I wish I had a relationship like that. Of course, it's probably just as unrealistic as the magic. Probably the ending is unrealistically happy as well, but then you sort of expect that in this type of book. At least it's not depressing.

I still think there are entirely too many super-powerful mages and adepts running around in the world of these books. You sort of get to the point where you think adepts (the most powerful of the magical people) are normal and everyone else is stunted.

I liked all the beautiful, powerful animals and animal-like sentient characters. They are very rich and diverse.

Three and a half star fantasy trilogy.......2003-07-04

"Winds of Fate" is a very good finish to the "Mage Winds" trilogy, yet there's something missing from this book. It's very hard to explain. I'm not sure I can, but here goes.

Elspeth and Darkwind matured a whole lot in book two, coming to work together and fall in love. I believed in that love story, and I believed in how well they worked together. I also believed in the destruction of Mornelithe Falconsbane, the more or less eternal enemy (from the "Gryphon" trilogy to the "Mage Storms" trilogy) who's set most of the overarching plot in motion.

However, in this book, "Winds of Fury," Falconsbane comes back to life, and we now find out he's had a Shin'a'in apprentice-shaman sitting in his head the whole time. (Well, An'desha had run off to learn magecraft, but if he'd have stayed in his clan, he'd have been a shaman.) I can't totally buy that, even though Ms. Lackey did it well and I like An'desha very much as a character.

Same with Nyara, Skif and Need (Nyara's new sword). They meet up with Vanyel and Stefen in the Forest of Sorrows (along with Elspeth, Darkwind, Firesong, and their Companions), which is very nice -- but it definitely came out of the blue. And although I loved seeing Vanyel and especially Stefen again (Stefen was one of my all-time favorite characters), I am just uncertain if they totally fit in here.

Finally, when Elspeth steps away from the throne of Valdemar to become the head of the Herald-mages, that makes sense. But having Queen Selenay take the news so calmly isn't; Selenay was close to tears at her "baby" leaving the nest in book one, "Winds of Fate." So, why the difference now? More Companion pressure? And if so, why wasn't it shown?

I agree that every mother finds a moment when they realize their child is now an adult, but I still find it hard to believe in this particular moment for that revelation.

The rest of the plot, where they take on Ancar (who holds Falconsbane, thus also holding the captive An'desha), I don't want to get into; that's for you to discover. And I think you'll enjoy it; it's very quick paced, funny in spots (Ms. Lackey does gallows-humor rather well), and the romances of Darkwind/Elspeth, Skif/Nyara and Treyvan/Hydona (the gryphons) work extremely well.

So, despite the somewhat off-true "Winds of Fate," I'd recommend this trilogy (even including that book, or the rest of it makes no sense at all), even though I do not feel it's Ms. Lackey's best work. To find better reads penned by Ms. Lackey, read "Oathbreakers," "By the Sword," Exile's Honor," or the Last Herald-mage trilogy about Vanyel Ashkevron. Those are deeper, richer and more realistic reads, which is why I give this book 3.5 stars out of five, as well as 3 stars overall for the trilogy. (The others all rated five stars.)

This is the third in a trilogy starting with 'Winds of Fate', which takes place many years after the first Valdemar trilogy 'Arrows of the Queen'.

Falconsbane, the villain of the previous two, was stuck in a gate (portal). He should have stayed in there, but something happened and Ancar, the king of Hardon who was at war with Valdemar, had called up a gate (though he should have died because he was not experienced enough) and the gate brought him Falconsbane.
The spirit inside Falconsbane has been talking to Avatars (spirits) and giving them information about Falconsbane. They taught him to read thoughts and memories of Falconsbane and to give false memories to him.
Elspeth, Firesong, Darkwind, Skif, and Nyara disguised themselves as traveling entertainers and along with other entertainers go into Hardon on a mission to kill Ancar, his mage Hulda, and Falconsbane.

Though this trilogy is not one of the best of the Valdemar books, if you've read the other two you've got to read this conclusion.
Don't forget to read other Valdemar books that come after, like the Mage Storm trilogy starting with Storm Warning!

I read Dale's book as soon as I could get it. Knowing him, his wife and children, I wanted to read what I was afraid to ask even a friend like Dale - "How do you survive losing a child?" Winds of Fury is Dale's version of the events around a tragic tornado in which many members of his wife's church died, including their four-year-old daughter. His story is painful, but filled with grace and hope. In places he is brutally honest, and in other places brutally funny. After I finished (which wasn't long because I couldn't put it down), I was thankful to God for giving me two beautiful children. I recall going into their rooms while they were asleep and giving them an extra kiss, painfully aware that Dale and Kelly could never do that for Hannah again. I was also filled with hope from reading the book. Dale reminded me that truly nothing can separate us from the love of God.

A touching memoir of terrible loss and gradual healing........1997-10-05

No one in northeast Alabama will ever forget Palm Sunday 1994. When deadly tornadoes ripped through northern Calhoun County, killing nearly two dozen people, a spring Sunday dedicated to beginning the holiest week of the Christian year became instead a stormy day of pain and loss. And yet, as the Rev. Dale Clem's memoir "Winds of Fury, Circles of Grace" demonstrates, the terrifying storms could not blow away the faith and devotion that would testify in no uncertain terms to a love and spirit that transcends disaster and death.

As the Rev. Kelly Clem led Palm Sunday services, including a children's pageant in which their 4-year-old daughter Hannah took part, Dale Clem was hundreds of miles away, leading a youth group on a spring break service trip to Oklahoma. The first report Clem received was sketchy, a message received from a cell phone call. "There's been a tornado," he was told. "It hit your wife's church... Kelly is in the hospital, the girls are okay; you need to call home." In the time it took for him to find his wife - interminable time - fear grew. No one had news about Hannah. Finally he was able to speak to Kelly, who told him: "Hannah is dead."

It was the beginning of a long day, a long week - a long year - of tears and mourning. "Winds of Fury, Circles of Grace" chronicles that year with touching honesty, neither shying away from sorrow nor forgetting joy. Clem captures the grief of a small congregation in a small town, where relationships are strengthened both by proximity and faith. He recounts unpleasant moments, such as hurtful and hateful notes received from zealots equating Kelly's ministry and the priesthood of women to Sodom and Gomorrah. And he shares many happy memories of Hannah - "Have I ever told you that I love you?" he would ask Hannah and her younger sister Sarah, and Hannah would giggle, "Oh, Daddy, you tell me that all the time."

The spirit of Hannah Clem is ever-present, dancing through these pages as she did through her life on earth, helping her father tell his tale of loss and redemption. Clem intersperses the chronological account of that Holy Week in 1994 - a week in which the message of death and resurrection resonated among the Piedmont hills - with good basic advice on confronting and accepting grief and healing. He begins this task with a quote from T.S. Eliot: "I said to my soul, be still, and wait.../So the darkness shall be the light,/and the stillness the dancing." He speaks to everyone who has known the darkness of death - encouraging by example, unafraid to recount his moments of weakness and weeping and glad to witness to a faith in life and in Christ which ultimately led both Clems through the valleys and shadows of the first year to a place of new hope and understanding.
