Book Description

ramoedya's The Girl from the Coast tells the story of a beautiful young woman from a fishing village who finds herself in an arranged marriage with a wealthy aristocrat. Forced to leave her parents and home behind, she moves to the city to become the 'lady' of her husband's house. Pramoedya's breathtaking literary skill is evident in every word of this book, one of his classic works of fiction made especially poignant because it is based on the life of his own grandmother.

3 out of 5 stars Looking outside our own culture.......2007-07-15

This is an interesting look into a the culture of Java and the position of women in that culture. Parts of the book are a bit disjointed but this is a translation and that may account for it. The author has about 30 books in all and I am planning to try another. I read this for a book group discussion and in general, we liked it and learned a good bit from it. Thought provoking story.

5 out of 5 stars A common girl encounters the nobility.......2004-03-26

A short novel by the Indonesian writer Pramoedya Toer, author of the Buru quartet, "The Girl from the Coast" is a beautifully told story based on the life of Toer's grandmother.

She was a young girl from a poor fishing village on the coast and was unfortunate enough to be so beautiful she caught the attention of the Bendoro, a rich and powerful Muslim nobleman from the city. From her family's point of view by marrying the Bendoro she is stepping up into a better life, from his she is nothing but a concubine or practice wife, and certainly not the first young virgin he has married then divorced and discarded. Used to a free and open life in the fishing village where all have to work together for their daily food and where she has lived in humble surroundings, she does not know how to adapt to the isolated and lonely life she is forced into in the grand home of the Bendoro. There is no other function for her other than to serve his needs when he chooses to see her, even when she eventually gives birth to a daughter, she has no claim on her own baby, her body nothing but a vehicle for bearing his child.

The girl from the coast is unforgettable though we never even find out her name, and the final ending so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. I did not realize until the end how much this was a true story, how incredible that Toer ever met his grandmother at all and what an influence this woman had on his life.

5 out of 5 stars A celebration of the human spirit..........2003-03-16

Pramoedya Toer has created a poignant and moving portrait of courage in The Girl from the Coast. Inspired by his family history, the author also lends a personal perspective. He is a dissident in Indonesia, once imprisoned for seventeen years for his own beliefs. In his many novels, Toer writes of the struggle of the common man, the need for respect for each individual, not only by rank of noble birth. He is the voice of those exploited and abused by a repressive government.

Known to the reader only as "the girl", the principal character in The Girl from the Coast is profoundly affecting. This amazing young woman shines throughout the pages with an irrepressible spirit. Taken from her simple fishing village for an arranged marriage to a city nobleman, the girl leaves the safety of her parents to begin a life for which she is totally unprepared. She is isolated and frightened in an untenable situation where she has no skills. She has one servant, who counsels the girl in the ways of the household. But when the servant is dismissed, her husband becomes the central figure in her world, and her days are spent awaiting his visits. The girl understands that her entire world depends upon his good will alone. To her dismay, she is informed that hers is only a "practice" marriage, not binding at all should the "Bendoro", or master, choose to divorce her.

This is a story about powerlessness, the impoverished vs. the privileged in a society that turns a deaf ear to anyone not of noble birth. But the girl is extraordinarily courageous in the face of terrible choices and heartbreaking circumstances, yet hopeful, for her spirit burns brightly. Alone and isolated, she uncovers her hidden strengths and nurtures her independence.

The Girl from the Coast is sprinkled throughout with intimate descriptions that draw the reader into the somber air of the very rooms the girl inhales in her solitude. This novel ripples with the energy of the plot as the story unfurls in unexpected ways. We witness the girl's plight as she is thrust along a path into the future, one that is almost preordained by a system that denies the humanity of the disenfranchised. In spite of her trials, the girl triumphs as the embodiment of the will to survive and to live a life of contentment, if not fulfillment.

With each stroke of Toer's pen, this country comes alive, his vital prose full of love for the people and the land, the intensely blue skies, waves breaking against a beach, the sound of a young girl's heart breaking. He defines the bond of commonality found in all humanity. His seductive language is as fluid as poetry: "At that moment it was only the dancing wind that ruled the world. Time moved forward, sometimes creeping slowly, sometimes advancing in wild leaps". The Girl from the Coast will haunt this reader long after the last page is turned. Luan Gaines/ 2003.

4 out of 5 stars A gripping story.......2002-09-07

This is a gripping story about class differences and being woman in colonial Indonesia.

We only get to know her as "The Girl", a stunningly beautiful teenager from a fishing village, who is picked to marry the local aristocrat "Bendoro". She objects to leaving the safety of her home, but is given no choice by her poor parents. They consider the marriage proposal from the powerful man in the nearby city to be a guarantee for a future of prosperity and good reputation.

So she is transformed from a village girl to Mistress, confined to the large manor with all its power plays. No longer is she able to move around freely. She is not to take part in the daily work. Her only obligation is to serve her husband obediently whenever he decides to order her attention.

"The Girl from the Coast" is a fascinating study about the system of social classes, not only in Indonesia, but in general. Trying to understand, the girl repeatedly turns to the servant who has been assigned to her. Why is her husband away all the time? What does he think of her? Why are there so many secrets in the manor?

Slowly she realizes what is happening in her new life. Materially she has no complaints, but she has lost her freedom. In Bendoro's world women are just another piece of property, to be enjoyed for entertainment or as a piece of furniture. In time she will be discarded, as all Bendoro's previous wives have been.

Two years after her marriage, the husband grants the girl permission to visit her parents in the village. It is a shocking experience. Far from enjoying the freedom of her village, she is now treated diffently. In the eyes of the villagers she is no longer the same as them; rather she is nobility.

Thus Toer describes when she first meets her former family and neighbors:

"All eyes were upon her, but each time she looked into a person's eyes, that person bowed his or her head quickly, as if nervous because of her presence. The girl winced. She couldn't remember her fellow villagers ever having acted that way toward her. No, of that she was sure, and now she felt even more strange than before, separated from her kinspeople, like a monkey in a cage."

Pramoedya Ananta Toer is Indonesia's master novelist, well known for books like "The Buru Quartet" and "The Fugitive". He was also a much respected dissident during the Suharto era, spending years in Indonesian prisons. Mr. Toer has been mentioned a number of times as a possible candidate for the Nobel literature prize.

In his epilogue Mr. Toer explains that "The Girl from the Coast" originally was intended as the first volume in a trilogy of novels on the growth of the nationalist movement in Indonesia. However, the two other novels in the trilogy were destroyed by the Indonesian military. That being said, "The Girl from the Coast" stands perfectly well on its own feet.

5 out of 5 stars A master writer.......2002-08-06

Samuels excellent translation of Toer's Girl from the Coast captures well the master writer that Toer is. There are few writing today that can equal his magic with words (in bahasa Indonesia or translated into English). I highly recommend this book.

Bendis's run on Daredevil has been one of the best ever. Much better than Miller's. That's right, I said it. This book's been building from the beginning, and it only gets better here. Bendis's crime noir past is apparent and very welcome, and Maleev's art is probably the best matched to a book that I can think of. The Volume 5 HC is gonna be the real gem, but this one includes the 'King of Hell's Kitchen' and 'The Widow' storylines, both of which were great. I suggest picking up all the hardcovers, as they don't really cost you any more than the trades and everything about them is great. Sad to see Bendis and Maleev go.

This writeup contains spoilers about the events that happened in the couple of years of Daredevil prior to the issues (Vol. 2 #s 26-31) reprinted here, so if you haven't read the earlier issues and are planning to, you may want to skip this review; the first issues of Volume 2 are reprinted in the Trade Paperback "Guardian Devil".

The Kingpin knows that Matt Murdock and Daredevil are one and the same, and has for quite some time (okay, everybody probably knows that one; it goes back quite a ways). But it, although the Kingpin's organization and Daredevil are constantly at war with one another, it's been a long time since Kingpin attempted to strike out at the Matt Murdock side of the DD/Murdock double identity. Quite a complicated relationship has developed between these two enemies over the years, and the Kingpin seems to have reached the point where he feels it's some kind of matter of honor to strike only against the Daredevil aspect of his nemesis; this in fact goes along quite faithfully with his character: the Kingpin is a ruthless, murderous individual, but he has his own code of honor that makes sense to him, and he prides himself and not violating it even when it would make his life a lot easier.

Here's the hook for the story: the Kingpin's men also know, with a fair degree of certainty, that Murdock is Daredevil, but they know their employer's general feelings on the matter and play ignorant. Into this scenario comes a breash, ambitious young up-and-comer in the world of organized crime, a new lietenant to the Kingpin named Sammy Silke. When Silke, who's got a deep resentment of all the costumed characters involved in the organized crime business or involved in opposing it, learns of what the others know, he's appalled and launches a two-fold plan: destroy Murdock/Daredevil on his own; and try to convince others in the Kingpin's crime empire to join him in a coup attempt against the now-blind Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin.

"Underboss" may be the single best 6-issue run of Daredevil out there, and brings in some of the most shocking changes in the status qwuo to hit the Marvel Universe in the last few years. Truly outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars An addictive story.......2005-09-02

I never really liked Daredevil but this changed when I read "Underboss" by Bendis. Bendis' talent lies in making super heroes like Daredevil seem realistic and as if he could exist in our world. Underboss is a story about Sammy Silke, a traditional mobster who is trying to become the new Kingpin. It is reminescent of the Godfather by Mario Puzo but there are no ripoffs of line (Unlike another book called Dark Victory published by Marvel's competitor.) Sammy wants to be the new Kingpin by taking out Daredevil the traditional way:using traditional hitmens form the mob. He doesn't want to hire colorful villians such as bullseyes or boomerang. Just take out Daredevil like the mob would do it. Does he succeed? Buy the book and find out.

5 out of 5 stars Bendis and Maleev excel........2003-03-28

I was never a huge Daredevil fan, for no reason in particular. With the recent attention from the feature film, and my appreciation for the writing of Brian Michael Bendis, I enthusiastically dove right into "Underboss". Bendis is remarkable, bringing the reader right in with Daredevil/Matt Murdock's thoughts and feelings. Maleev's art is perfect for the portrayal of the darkness and seedier side of Hell's Kitchen. The city lives and breathes around us as we follow Matt through his trials and tribulations.

As much as I enjoy traditional superhero stories, I'm even more impressed with Bendis' intention of making sure the reader knows all about the man behind the mask. By making us aware of Dardevil's internal struggles and imperfections, I was identifying and empathizing with him all the way. After a certain point, some costumed crusaders can lose the reader by being too invinceable, too invulnerable, too perfect. Matt Murdock is a human being, whether he's in costume or not.

Bendis and Maleev also give us a well developed plot and a diverse cast of supporting characters. It's easy to envision "Underboss" as a gripping thriller of a movie, or a page turner of a novel. Congratulations to Bendis and Maleev for giving us such enjoyable reading. I look forward to reading the next collection.

5 out of 5 stars Daredevil at its grittiest, most entertaining.......2003-02-20

Daredevil is a book at its best when the lead character is pitted against real danger and Brian Michael Bendis puts him there. In the Underboss storyarc, a criminal named Mr. Silke has stepped in on the Kingpin's territory and is attempting to root it out from the inside. Convincing his own henchmen that Wilson Fisk's reign needs to end, he manages a coup of epic proportions, with Matt Murdock caught in the midst of the whirlwind. The ramifications of this storyline are still rocking Daredevil's world now.
With Bendis penning the book and Alex Maleev depicting the dark world of Hell's Kitchen, Underboss is an amazing read. These two talents have established a unique style for the book that puts it among the Frank Miller, Kevin Smith and David Mazzuchelli runs of Daredevil perfection.
The trade paperback format does all of the art justice, compiling several issues of intensity into one amazing read.

5 out of 5 stars My first DareDevil, and I liked it!.......2002-12-29

Being drawn by the name of Mr. Bendis, and having heard good things about the character lately, I decided to pick this baby up and be ahead of the movie rush. I was glad I did! Mr. Bendis's DareDevil rates right up there with his Ultimate Spider-Man, although in a different genre. I'll also be looking for Mr. Bendis's previous DareDevil book, and the follow-up to Underboss, "DareDevil: Out". And if Mr. Bendis produces anymore DareDevil trades, I'll get them as well. :D

By her own admission, Typhoid Mary is "a love-maker and a man-hater." She is a psychotic, schizophrenic predator who will use her gallery of multiple personalities for one single-minded purpose: to seduce, dominate, and ultimately execute her prey. Quickly becoming the underworld's most feared assassin, Mary terrorizes her targets with a seemingly inexhaustible lust for bloodshed. In service to the Kingpin, Typhoid Mary sets her deadly sights on Daredevil, the heroic protector of New York's notorious Hell's Kitchen. With Daredevil at her mercy, will Typhoid Mary be able to strike the fatal blow?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent -great addition to the DD mythos.......2005-07-25

One of the main strengths is a great combination of characters.
Typhoid Mary is an intriguing character and is an excellent foil for Daredevil's character. Karen Page is a good supporting character, and Nocenti does not whitewash her past. The Kingpin is well-written and his actions are a logical follow-up to "Born Again." Is was especially interesting to see how the characters are coping with the events after "Born Again" (what does Matt do without his license? how does Foggy beave without Matt as a moral compass? etc.) Even the minor villains are well-rounded such as Bullet and his son who is preparing for a nuclear apocalypse.

                    Many interestng themes -
Daredevil as a man working within the law in his civilian identity but as DD works outside the law. Matt is against violence but uses violence himself as DD. There are also many political themes present too. The DD vs Punisher issue contrasts their approach to the criminal involved.

John Romita Jr's art is pretty good overall. Sometimes the phyisques do not look quite right, but the panel layout is excellent. There are many standout panels - for instance DD being knocked onto the float in the anti-nuke rally and his delusions from his severe injuries.

The ending was a little weak, and those not familiar with the Inferno story may have some difficulty following it. Also, I think some of the stories would have been enhanced if some of the issues preceding these would have included (247-253), but these can be obtained cheaply. But overall this was an excellent story and well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars analysis of female and male interaction.......2004-04-21

This is one of the best comics I have read to date that explores female and male interaction. Using one of the best female villains that have appeared in a comic book, Typhoid Mary. Duel personalities, with psychotic manipulation perfectly written to create a formidable female foe, or equal - depending on how you overall see the charcter.

Daredevil : Typhoid Mary is a comic that so relevant in so many ways, now that we are living in the 21st century, and the comic was written between 88 and 91. The anti war sentiments thoughtout, the frustrated male posturing that occurs within most of the male charters. The fragility of relationships, i.e. (Karen Page and Matt Murdock's fling with Typhoid Mary's other personality, the placid and timid Mary.) Manipulation, and power struggle between the "powerful" yet vulnerable male charters, and the manipulative and destructible Typhoid Mary. The pages where the Kingpin reveals his loss of his wife. Typhoid Mary's manipulation and power struggle with the Kingpin, which you could relate to women today, gaining more high-powered jobs, corporate etc. Considering the Kingpin represents the pinnacle of male power.

Comics should be written like this, dealing with human interaction and strength weakness etc. Makes the story so much more relatable and interesting.

The disappointing ending with the rushed conclusion, in which Manhattan is overun by Demons halted the enthralment of the overall story. Understandably comics have to run down its moments of greatness and conclude stories, which occurs a lot.

But all and all, if you are a DD fan, or a new fan get this comic. It shows the interesting possibilities of a comic charter that is so contemporary, and so relevant to the current world we live. Excellent

3 out of 5 stars A book with a lot of shining moments, but slacks off........2003-06-10

This book is a little hard to review. It has all the markings of a Daredevil classic -- tragedy, love, conflict, et cetera -- but it also has parts that are mediocre, boring or confusing.

Daredevil: Typhoid Mary introduces a new and great villain to Matt's rogues' gallery. What makes this book good is its relationships between the characters (Mary, Typhoid, Kingpin, Matt, Daredevil, and Karen). This is the best part of the book and I just wish that the author, Ann Nocenti, concentrated more on them. Instead of her centering and expanding on the relationships between the characters she gives in to boring action sequences towards the end of the book, after it started off nicely. There are useless appearances from Johnny Storm (the Human Torch of the Fantastic Four), which were meant for comedic value but come off as childish and unamusing.

And, perhaps the strangest part of this book, the ending leaves much to be desired. It barely has anything to do with what has happened in the previous chapters. Basically what happens is, hell invades Manhattan. (I can't put the blame on Nocenti for that part, though, because it was a crossover event, titled "Inferno," between a lot of the Marvel properties that the editors probably enforced all series to undergo a part in.) It detracts from the overall value of the book and it's a distraction from what we should be paying attention to.

Also, the writer redundantly expresses her feelings on war in a portion of the book. It's worthless to the overall story and she just uses the two main characters, rather unfairly I might add, to spread her pro-peace message. WE GET IT, YOU DON'T LIKE WARS OR NUKES.

If you ignore the Johnny Storm appearances, the peace propaganda, the unexciting fight sequences (the good action pieces are the ones between Typhoid and Daredevil), and the incoherent ending, you've got a pretty good book on your hands.

I know that I've painted a bad picture of this book, but I honestly must say that the shining moments in Daredevil: Typhoid Mary -- such as the taboo relationship between Matt and Mary, the failing connections between Matt and Karen (and Matt and Foggy, for that matter), the unusual and malignant "love" between the Kingpin and Typhoid, and so on -- deserve to be read, for they do make for a great story. Take the good with the bad. It's worth it in this case because the good is really, really good.

And John Romita Jr. shows off some pretty nice artwork.

Don't pass this book up. Its shining moments are worth the cover price.
