Finally, a new book with substance and character formation........1999-10-19
I'm looking forward to reading more of Paul Walkin's books
A Phoenix defined........1998-05-14
A great read. The main character finds peace at the end of his lengthy journey. Watkins posesses a wonderful feel for use of symbolism in flight and the exotic landscape of Morrocco and France. A powerful journey from nothing to rebirth. In the Blue Light...possess great imagery and movement of time.
Never have I thought I could identify with a pilot from World War I. Much like Robinson Carusoe, Charlie Halifax, pushed towards the end of his moral and isolational limits, has estblished a friendship with a foreigner friend, becoming travel partners, like Crosby and Hope. Halifax remained passaionate yet myopic on his goal until the end, finally realizing new horizons lay ahead.
This book is every bite as unique as his Archangel. Also look for Peter Gadol novels.
An interesting "read" that takes you into new territory.......1998-05-13
I thoroughly enjoyed this book --found it an interesting read, though it did remind me, in parts, of The English Patient. The characters were quite well drawn out and I look forward to reading other books by Paul Watkins (which is why I am here at the site to begin with).

Product Description
9 Cassettes - Halifax had been in French Africa for five years, doing whatever foolhardy, dangerous thing Serailler ordered him to do. It was some time before he finally snapped, but when he did, he opened the throttle, eased back the stick, and lifted straight and high into a dream.
Book Description
When we think of work, we often think of drudgery, frustration, and stress. For too many of us, work is the last place in our lives we expect to experience satisfaction, fulfillment, or spiritual growth. In this unique book, Michael Carroll—a meditation teacher, executive coach, and corporate director—shares Buddhist wisdom on how to transform the common hassles and anxieties of the workplace into valuable opportunities for heightened wisdom and enhanced effectiveness. Carroll shows us how life on the job—no matter what kind of work we do—can become one of the most engaging and fulfilling areas of our lives.
At its heart, Awake at Work offers thirty-five principles that we can use throughout our day to revitalize our work as well as our understanding of ourselves and others. Carroll invites readers to contemplate these slogans and to use them on-the-spot, in the midst of work's chaos, to develop clarity, wisdom, and inspiration. Along the way, Carroll presents a variety of techniques and insights to help us acknowledge work, with all its complications, as "a valuable invitation to fully live our lives." In an engaging, accessible, and often humorous style, Awake at Work offers readers a path to rediscovering our natural sense of intelligence, confidence, and delight on the job.
Customer Reviews:
Thirty-five principle slogans that are presented in well-formed essays.......2007-06-27
Caroll's book cultivates mindfulness on the job via thirty-five slogans (or principles) designed to provide natural wisdom, openness, and poise in the workplace. The slogans in the book are derived from the spiritual practice of lojong described in the Tibetian Buddhist text The Root Text of the Seven Points of Training the Mind. Carroll recommends a four-step approach of identifying four primary slogans, randomly selecting others to study at your leisure, looking for spontaneously applicability of slogans throughout your day, and deliberating contemplating a slogan a day through meditation, a journals, or an index card system.
The slogans are presented as much more than simple maxims. Each chapter is a well-formed essay with historical perspective, practical modern day applications, and the benefits of each principle. Many chapters encourage the reframing of our thoughts and acceptance of what factors are within and beyond our control. The reader is repeatedly encouraged to meditate and reflect to explore specific aspects of work. The appendix includes practical instructions for conducting a meditation session, strategies for contemplating the slogans, and tips for cultivating li (the social rituals of decency and goodness).
Applying Practical Spirituality at Work.......2007-05-28
Most of us spend a third of our adult lives at work, and for many it is not much fun. It becomes something that we do to pay the bills, rather than being a fulfilling activity in which we can be fully engaged. Even for people in the professions that require a lot of thinking, work often becomes a bit of a hindbrain activity that people can do in their sleep.
For the last three decades I have been asking three questions:
"Why do so many people sleep walk through life?"
"Would they thank us if they woke up?" and
"What could we do to help them wake up?"
The author of this important book helps provide some answers. He founded Awake at Work Associates, a consultancy that specializes in helping organizations and individuals apply mindfulness awareness in the workplace, to help both recover balance and well-being in work. Michael Carroll is both a practicing Buddhist who is an authorized teacher in the lineage of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, and has over two decades experience in human resources in several large companies. He teaches mindfulness meditation at the Omega Institute, New York Open Center, and the Wharton Business School in Philadelphia.
Michael encourages us to explore our relationships to work and his book is full of practical and uplifting suggestions that are grounded in his work in meditation.
One good example is this: he points out that if we are going to be awake at work, we need to understand how we fell asleep. In Tibetan Buddhism, meditators study the six confusions or "mindsets that describe how we imprison ourselves at work." He then applies these six confusions in the workplace:
Work as drudgery
Work as war
Work as addiction
Work as entertainment
Work as inconvenience
Work as a problem
As he says, "recognizing that we, not work are imprisoning ourselves is critical if we expect to discover well-being in our livelihoods." So he provides precise ways of "letting go" of the imbalances that work can introduce into our lives by cultivating authenticity and a right code of conduct.
He also describes a practice that he calls "enrichment," that can be used to used to resolve conflicts. The idea is that in an adversarial situation, we should not try to defend our own truth or position, or to find some way in which we can benefit, but to act with good will to produce an outcome that is mutually beneficial. This is more than just trying to find the win/win in a situation: it is a broader concept that goes beyond personal gain to try and find the greater good. This may sound like something easier said than done, but the book contains good advice on how to attain this.
What I particularly like about this book is that it is an exercise in practical spirituality. A spirituality that we visit for an hour or two a week may be fine for some people, but the real value of a spiritual life is that it can be something that can inform all of our actions, from education, to work, sex and politics.
Highly recommended.
Good quick read.......2007-02-08
As a lifelong Buddhist I learned to meditate before I learned to crawl, but this book brings the lessons that I daily use into a language that I think most people can understand.
Waking Up: A Lasting Work Benefit.......2006-09-26
This well-written, sane and skillful book is helping me to work and be better, a very satisfying reward in itself.
So Good I've Worn Out Two.......2006-07-18
This book was a godsend for me. I read a section of it EVERY morning before I go to work. I've worn out two copies and just ordered more. If your job gets under skin in any way, shape or form, do yourself a large favor and get this. And by the way, you can swap the word "work" with "life" and the wisdom becomes even broader. GREAT BOOK.

Book Description
The saga of Recluce by L.E. Modesitt, Jr., has become one of the standard works of fantasy in the 1990s. VOYA says, "Modesitt's logical structure of the interrelationship of order and chaos, magic and technology, is one of the most through in modern fantasy. The personal growth of his characters and the depiction of their world, it well-written and credible - and involves the reader.... The serious fantasy reader will revel in Modesitt's work." Launched with The Magic of Recluce, the novels of Recluce have gone on to sell over a million copies in paperback. The most recent of the Recluce novels, Fall of Angels, introduced the engineer/smith Nylan, the only man among the leadership of the company of "angels" marooned on a high plateau in the west of Candar, and perhaps the one person most responsible for their survival. But the angels are a matriarchal band, and so Nylan must leave his companions and seek a life elsewhere. He travels down from the plateau into the world of warring kingdoms and strange magics with his companion, Ayrlyn, the healer, and his infant son. They are in search of a place to lead a peaceful life, but they look different from the locals, and their talents are most valued in battle - and so the war between chaos and order begins again. The Chaos Balance is the seventh book of the saga of Recluce.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Nylan the spaceship engineer and now order master has had enough of annoying matriarchy, and leaves with his wife and child to go into the outside world.
With his power and talents, he ends up being a key player in events, and in a battle against the Chaos Wizards.
A good story, but very similar to others in the series........2004-03-24
This books chronicles the fall of Cyador and the rise of Naclos. Even though the history and information about chaos/order relationships contained in this one are important for a reader wanting to understand the world of Recluce, I was somewhat disapointed by the fact that this book reads almost exactly like the others in the series. Basically, Nylan, your typical smith/order-mage, spends most of the book struggling to understand and master his powers. The book ends in the same way most of the others have- Nylan destroying a huge White army at the last possible second and being punished for it just like all the other heroes have been, by going blind and aging. I did like the characters in this one, good and bad, but I felt like I knew what was going to happen the entire time (which it turns out I did) so I didn't really get caught up in the suspense very much, just tried to get through it in a hurry to more on to the next one, which doesn't make for enjoyable reading. Hopefully in future books, Modesitt will change up the general story outline, maybe detailing the colonization of the planet by the Rats.
more of the same.......2000-11-27
This was first Modesitt book in which i was bored from start to finish. seemed to be mainly a repeat of hi sother works, mainly "The MAgic Engineer" using the charactors from "Fall of Angels". Even the ending comes as completely predictable to anyone who has read the rest of the series. Unrecommended. Try his first in the series, best in the series, "The magic of Recluse" instead.
Understanding & Enjoying the World of Recluse.......2000-11-16
L.E. Modesitt jr's Recluse series is a world of magic and balance. a world that will grab you and make you loss track of time as you are unable to put his Recluse books down. The author, recommends that you read his book in the order of they were published. If you are the person who likes to read the last 50 pages of a book first, and then skip around to different areas of the book as you read it through, then by all means, read the Recluse series in the order of publish. WAIT!..... If you are a reader who truly enjoys finding yourself part of the on going story, as read a series from the start of he story to its end. Then the Recluse series will grab you and not let you go until the conclusion of the series. L.E. Modesitt, jr. has written an 11 books series of the Recluse world so far. This author wrote the Magic of Recluse first. As be has published books, he has jumped around throughout the story time line of the world of Recluse, and put together books of set, and other single books, which he may add another book to that part of the story in a future published book. This author has written the story in books of set, that is the first three book of story: 1st book) "Fall of Angels", 2rd) "The Chaos Balance" & 3rd) "The Tower of the Sunset". Tells the birth and the destruction of kingdom of highly skilled warriors, with the third book leading into the creation of a new kingdom, (Recluse). Then the next book is, 4th book of the World of Recluse) "The Magic Engineer". Then Modesitt, jr. switches to the side of Chaos, and tells a story where the character's of Chaos will became heroes in your eyes too. So with time, you will gain a better understanding of the World of Recluse through the following books: 5th book) "The White Order", & 6th book) "the Color of Chaos". The next set of books that go together in the World of Recluse, are: 7th book) "The Order War", 8th book) "The Magic of Recluse", & the 9th book) "The Death of Chaos". As for the last two book that the author has written, he has drifted into the life of some of the troops found in the World of Recluse. My $0.02 worth.
The Best Book That There Is.......2000-08-19
This book is an exelent follow up on The Fall of Angel. Nylan the engineer of the angel war ship Winterlance in the previous book fell to a world and built a tower of which Ryba the leader clamed the title Marshill of Westwind and brought the power of the Legend unto the world creating a feministic rule on the Roof of the World.
In the Chaos Balance Nylan and his consort Ayrlyn and Nylan's son fled the roof of the world to Lornth where he agreed to help them fight the empire of the white demons Cyador.
Nylan leaves a while to the great forest Naclos and learns alot about Order Magic and goes back to the battle and uses his power with the help of the forest to destroy the white army and all of Cyador. After doing so he settles down with his consort in Naclos while the Forest reclames its original boundaries.

From Chaos to Calm: How to Shift Unhealthy Stress Patterns and Create Your Ideal Balance in Life.......2006-06-28
Write from the get go, Gini's book on stress made me feel relaxed because of her sense of humor and the generous and humble way in which she revealed her own foibles. I was quickly involved in an introductory exercise which revealed my current reality and demonstrated where my life was not the way I would prefer it. What a revelation to realize that, not only did I have an easily discoverable pattern to my stress reactions, but that I was hooked into a payoff for maintaining it. The awareness the exercises in Gini's book gave me, have been a liberating experience and I cannot recommend her book highly enough. My personal little drama revealed itself to be that I was mirroring patterns of lack and struggle that I picked up from my parents, so that even though my circumstances are far more affluent than there's were, I would contort my reality to fulfill the picture (my belief system) of my early life with them. This is truly a great book for anyone who is willing the seriously make a change for the better. The truth shall set you free. Simple? Yes! Easy? Well probably easier than you think. On top of that, it is well written and a pleasure to read.

Book Description
Let's face it: these days life is demanding, chaotic, and often overwhelming. The self-help gurus would have us believe that we can achieve a "perfect balance" of career, family, and personal time. But you know that there just aren't enough hours in the day to do everything you need to do, let alone want to do.
How do you cope? Accept what you know deep inside, that life is chaotic, and learn how to make choices within that chaos that will enable you to live life with less guilt and more satisfaction.
Start with a simple self-assessment test, the Co-efficient for Chaos Quiz, to find out how much chaos you can tolerate in your life. Some of us need to have order and calm most of the time, while others thrive on chaotic demands and chronic busyness. By getting to know yourself better, this book will show you how to make guilt-free choices and effectively deal with the chaos in your life.
Read this book and develop a personalized plan to take charge of what you can control and let go of the rest!
Customer Reviews:
I Want and Can (WaC) manage my Chaos!.......2005-06-07
This book was a breath of fresh air for me! It outlines a very logical approach to understanding your "chaos coefficient" and learning to manage your life and time to stay within your comfort range. Stress is unavoidable but knowing what my tolerance levels are and gaining some tools to determine the root causes will prove invaluable to me.
This book is very engaging since it's filled with real life antic dotes and simple exercises. I plan to keep it on my shelf and pick it up occasionally when my life seems to be getting out of WaC (my Want and Can area) again!
Makes sense to me.......2005-05-27
I always thought there was something wrong with me. Why couldn't I find the "balance" between work and family and having a life that would make me happy in all areas? This book put me straight. There's no such thing!
But you can do some things to help life work out better, starting by figuring out your tolerance for chaos and then managing the stuff in life that creates chaos. This book is entertaining and designed to be read in short bits. It's loaded with simple (not stupid) exercises, good advice and case histories of other people. Very helpful. Now I recognize "high chaos" people a mile off.
Liberation From Unattainable "Balance".......2005-04-30
When one part of our lives is disproportionate to the others, either assuming overwhelming importance or suffering from extreme neglect, we feel unhealthy, both physically and mentally. As a health educator, my entire life has been devoted to helping people achieve "balance." What my students have found, as have I, is that balance is a moving target and never achievable for any length of time. Comfortable Chaos is a concept whose time has come. Once we remove the burden of thinking we have to be balanced, we are liberated to better enjoy our life as it is- a bit chaotic, sometimes more than others. As Harvey and Herrild have expressed, we periodically can hit those pools of quiet water, but most of the time, we may be shooting rapids. The trick is to enjoy the ride. Realize that some chaos in our lives is inevitable and engineer them to strive for a tolerant level of chaos where we can focus on the experiences, the joys, and the stimulation of it all. Having a full life must, by definition, involve turmoil and stress. But stress makes us grow. Comfortable Chaos is a realistic helpful book with some excellent tools to apply to our own situation. I plan to recommend the book to my stress management and "Eating an Elephant' class participants.
Book Description
This is the first in a series of inspirational/motivational gift books that use inanimate objects as metaphors for enhancing the way we live. In this lighthearted look at personal problem solving patterns, "Cheaper Than Therapy: How to Keep Life's Small Problems from Becoming Big Ones", illustrates "The Lesson of the Paper Clips". Gina Greenlee uses playful images of pliant paper clips to show how choosing what seems to be the easy way out of life's small problems often results in bigger, more overwhelming ones.
Customer Reviews:
ITS CHEAPER THAN THERAPY.......2007-03-04
I first read "The Lesson of the Chopsticks" and must say that I was not disappointed reading "How to Keep Life's Small Problems from Becoming Big Ones"! Ms.Greenlee's unique view of life's everyday challenges is one we all can identify with on some level.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is in need of a boost to handle procrastination and prioritizing. Ms. Greenlee's uncovers a profound truth using vivid illustrations and metaphors to convey her point and shift us out of our "comfort zone". And, it's a LOT CHEAPER THAN THERAPY!
A Real Gem For All Ages.......2007-02-15
Finally, a most enjoyable and interesting book filled with practical and useful guidance that can be helpful for every age and every level. Each lesson is deeply meaningful, yet stated so simply. A true Gem!!!
An opportunity to grow.......2007-01-29
Who knew that paying attention to inanimate objects could be so powerful? In "Paperclips", Ms. Greenlee has humorously and quite consciously given us a roadmap to sorting through the habits we all develop when faced with discomfort. Reading it again and again gives the reader a fresh way of envisioning life's way of offering opportunities to grow.
Coping with Clutter.......2006-11-17
This charmingly simple book spoke volumes to me about the dangers of a disorganized life, and brought to mind several practical applications. If I don't hang up my clothes every night, my bedroom is soon an unworkable mess. If I don't take care of my mail (and other paperwork) diligently and often, it soon becomes overwhelming, and I can't find that piece of paper I really need. If I don't spot-clean the kitchen and baths (almost) every day, things get disgusting quite quickly, and germs can grow. And the list could go on. It's so refreshing to see a simple, highly useful truth presented in such an engaging way, and I look forward to the next "lesson." Way to go, Gina!
Inspiring!.......2006-10-04
A quick read that leaves you feeling refreshed and confident to face the challenges ahead. This is not a book you'll read just once but one you'll reference again and again.
