Book Description
BACK STAB is a mystery about the newspaper business--which has always been murder. Now someone is killing off readers, and the St. Louis City Gazette can't afford to lose circulation.
Gazette columnist Francesca Vierling takes these deaths personally--reliable sources are hard to find--and Francesca's search for the killer takes her into the strange side streets of St. Louis, including a visit to the Miss Gender Bender Pageant, a beauty contest for female impersonators. Along the way Francesca must determine if her own blood soaked past is clouding her view of the future.

Death Of A Friend.......2004-11-14
Francesca Vierling, 37 year old columnist for the St. Louis City Gazette, didn't think anything could go wrong with her latest column, covering the Miss American Gender Bender Pageant for female impersonators.
There weren't any problems with the contest, except that one of the contestants, calling herself Maria Callous, a runner up the previous year, didn't show up.
Francesca wasn't too happy when her editor killed the column, deciding that gender bender beauty contests were not right for their paper.
Rita, a retired reader tips off Francesca about a murder of what appeared to be a transsexual prostitute. Rita wondered if this murder was connected to a previous murder of another transsexual prostitute.
Then Francesca hears about the murder of Burt, elderly owner of Burts bar a local landmark. Francesca had just been in Burt's Bar, with Ralph, a building rehaber who was also the source that managed to get her into the Miss Gender Bender contest.
Then Ralph ends up dead, dying from an asthma attack while working on a house, without any of his asthma breathalizers with him.
What is going on? Could these deaths all be connected? Mark Mahew, the detective certainly doesn't think so, but Francesca is determined to find out who killed her friends and who was the dead prostitute and did her death have anything to do with Burt & Ralph's death?
Highlights:
The mystery. The killer turned out to be a surprise, I had picked someone else out as the killer.
Mark Mayhew, the happily married detective who is a good friend, but trying to keep Francesca out of the crime proves a losing battle.
Marlene, the waitress at Uncle Bob's Pancake House, Francesca's favorite dining place. Marlene knows everyone and everything. Gives good advice, which Francesca never listens to and a great friend.
Humor. This book has some very funny moments.
Lowlights:
I didn't find Francesca a very likable person. She treats her boyfriend, Lyle Donnegan, college professor horribly. She had a terrible childhood, her mother ended up killing her father over his infidelities and then herself. I think some therapy would do her good.
St. Louis City Gazette Staff. Everyone from Hadley Harris III, managing editor, to Charlie and even Georgia, who Francesca considers her mentor are obnoxious, awful people. I wouldn't be friends with any of them. Francesca isn't friends with them either, but how you can work at a place where you hate everyone is beyond me.
The fact that Francesca, who has a talent, and could take her writing skills anywhere, would continue to work for this horrible paper with these horrible people, is one of the reasons I find her so unlikable.
Does everyone have to be quirky and eccentric?
Overall, not a very good book. But then I didn't like her first book in her Dead End Job series either, but the second book turned out to be great.
The writing is so good, that even with these problems, the mystery keeps you interested and makes you want to go onto the next book.
newspaper columnist with a taste for the truth.......2003-07-05
Francesca Vierling is a columnist for the St. Louis City Gazette; at six feet tall and with a love for the truth, she is a striking figure. It's winter, and absolutely nothing is what it seems.
Two of Francesca's friends - Burt, an old man who was the victim of what was supposedly a robbery gone wrong, and Ralph, a gay house remodeler who suffered from an asthma attack, after supposedly forgetting to keep an inhaler nearby - died, and that police are not convinced that these deaths were related, or that Ralph was even murdered.
However, Francesca thinks they are... and goes out of her way to prove it. This book is larger than life, while still being realistic; included are a transvestite beauty contest, a bunch of editors who may or may not be the conservative types they pose as, and a killer who is definitely not what the reader will expect.
The main problem I have with this book is the similarity to the author, which is usually a crime punishable of bad reviews. However, the force of such likeable, diverse characters and situations really make this book worth the search... even if you do have to pay ungodly amounts of money for it.
Funny, great sense of place.......2000-08-16
This is the secone Elaine Viets mystery I've read (Rubout was the first) and I've enjoyed them both. She's great at establishing a sense of place, and since that place is my hometown of St. Louis, I was especially drawn into the story. There were a couple flaws, though: Why does the heroine wonder if a guy stabbed in the back was murdered? Obviously he was murdered, since I can't imagine anyone committing suicide by stabbing themselves in the back. The book's editor needed to clarify that the heroine, Francesca, thought the victim hadn't been killed in a routine robbery. But that's not the only editor's mistake I've seen in all sorts of books -- not by a long shot! Anyway, if you enjoy savvy women detectives, funny writing, and plenty of atmosphere, you won't be disappointed by Backstab.
Enjoyable read, but. . ........2000-08-01
There are a lot of plusses to this book: great sense of place; some very clever wordplay; an engaging, imperfect heroine; an intriguing storyline. Unfortunately, problems with pacing and structure detracted me from being able to lose myself in BACKSTAB as much as I might otherwise have done, or to give it an unqualified recommendation.
Using conversation to convey information to the reader is certainly a viable storytelling device; having characters talking at great length about things one or both already knows, however, can come off sounding contrived. Ms. Viets uses this device quite a bit, unfortunately to the exclusion of more actual real-time scenes, where we get to see characters in conflict with each other. In other words, there's a lot of chit-chat, and not a whole lot of action, which strains the pacing. I was also aware of a lot of repetition -- the same information kept being served up in different ways -- which became tedious after a while. And her habit of telling us what had happened, then backtracking and filling us in on what led up to the event, was, at times, disconcerting. I, too, figured out the killer much too easily, in part because there weren't sufficient red herrings to keep me off-balance. And when the reader figures out whodunit before the protagonist does, that tends to make the protagonist seem a bit dull-witted, which Francesca certainly isn't.
Granted, many of the aspects of the book which bothered me won't even faze other readers. And I certainly liked what I read well enough to try another one of her books. I had just hoped for something a bit more focused.
Likeable heroine, but killer was obvious.......2000-07-23
Reporter columnist Francesca Vierling makes her debut in BACKSTAB by Elaine Viets. Francesca works for a second-rate St. Louis newspaper, where the emphasis is on covering the "right" rather than "important" news. The managing editor, Hadley Harris III, and his minion, Charlie, strive to maintain "family values" at the newspaper by printing non-controversial stories only. Francesca finds this frustrating and limiting, as many of her stories are designated controversial by her editors.
When two of Francesca's friends are killed, she suspects foul play. Unfortunately, no one agrees with her, including the police. After someone tries to run her over, Francesca knows she's right. Not one to let that stop her, Francesca continues to dig into their deaths.
While Francesca is a likeable heroine, I was able to figure out the killer's identity long before she did, which eliminated much of the suspense necessary for a successful mystery. The author needs to work on her plotting techniques in future novels; however, she does provide the reader with a terrific insight into the world of newspapers and some of the seedier sides of life in general. In spite of figuring out whodunit early in the book, I was unable to put the book down. I look forward to the next book in this series.

Product Description
When you think of all the strange things that have happened in your life, you tend to say 'It just can't get any stranger than that.' That's what the people of Earth thought. It was always suspected there was other life out there and it had been suspected that the Earth had been visited in the past. It had! And by a race of people now coming to seek our help. Who would think that an advanced race would need the help of a civilization several hundred years, if not thousands of years younger. Less technologically advanced. Yet, the Andromedians had sent their ambassador to enlist the help of Earth in fighting off the chains of oppression from a domineering race known as the Laxtor's. Their arrival is a gold mine of opportunity for the people of earth. Advances in medicine are freely given along with the designs for a better aircraft, that fly not only in the atmosphere, but are capable of achieving orbit without burning the usual mix of chemicals. At least that's what they say...

Great Sci-Fic.......2002-03-16
When I first opened A Stab in the Back, I was skeptical. I wasn't a big fan of science fiction, even though I enjoyed it on TV. But once into the book, I found it exciting and intriguing. I forgot I was reading science fiction and just enjoyed the events that occurred.
Good job, Phillip Beebe!

Book Description
A haunting, beautifully written novel set in early-nineteenth-century Louisiana: the tale of a slave girl’s journey—emotional and physical—from captivity to freedom.
Susan Straight has been called “a writer of exceptional gifts and grace” (Joyce Carol Oates). In A Million Nightingales she brings those gifts to bear on the story of Moinette, daughter of an African mother and a white father she never knew. While her mother cares for the plantation linens, Moinette tends to the master’s daughter, which allows her to eavesdrop on lessons. She also learns that she is property, and at fourteen she is sold, separated from her mother without a chance to say goodbye. Heartbroken and terrified, and with a full understanding of what she will risk, Moinette begins almost immediately to prepare herself for the moment when she will escape.
It is Moinette’s own voice that we hear—bright, rhythmic, observant, and altogether captivating–as she describes her journey through a world of brutality, sexual violence, and loss. Quick to see the patterns of French, American, and African life play out around her, Moinette makes her way from sugarcane fields through mysterious bayous to the streets of Opelousas, where the true meaning of freedom emerges from the bonds of love.
An uncommonly rich novel, brimming with event and character, A Million Nightingales is a powerful confirmation of the remarkable novelist we have in Susan Straight.
Customer Reviews:
POWERFUL!.......2007-08-02
Set in Louisiana, in the 1800s, this is a heart-wrenching and gut-churning tale of the inhumanity of slavery. Centered around the life experiences of a mulatresse (half white, half black) girl, Moinette, until she reaches her early fifties.
Moinette is the only child of Marie-Therese, an African slave who had been "bred" with a white man that Moinette never met or knew as her father. "Bred" because the blacks were considered animals whose only value was to produce more slaves for their masters to work in the fields or in the house. But this story is told in first person, with such intelligence and tenderness that the reader can't help but become fascinated and drawn into the story. Moinette is raised in her mother's sparse cabin, but is content to just be with her mother.
As a teenager, Moinette is the servant to the Bordelon's daughter, Cephaline. While Cephaline was being tutored, Moinette was always nearby absorbing the information and even learning (illegal for slaves). When Cephaline dies young, her father sells Moinette because he could not stand that his beautiful daughter was gone, yet this unworthy slave girl was the picture of health.
At first, Moinette hates and distrusts her new single owner, and feels certain he will force himself on her unexpectedly and repeatedly. When this doesn't happen, and he leaves her to run his boardinghouse, a delicate bond is formed. When his male business partner moves in, Moinette sees their affection and respects their privacy. Using her as cover for their relationship, they eventually give her the boardinghouse and her freedom.
Raped more than once, Moinette produces a son. So much hard work and sorrow have filled her life, yet she keeps trying to better herself. At age 30 she is an old woman, used hard but not used up.
A Million Nightingales is told with such tenderness and candor, and resonates long after the book is finished. The author's delicate storytelling skills wrap the reader in the cocoon that is Moinette's life. The violence will rock the emotions, and the few glimpses of happiness will tug the heartstrings. This story educates as well as entertains.
Armchair Interviews says: A very moving and yet disturbing piece.
Sort of depressing, but a good read.......2007-06-11
I was hooked into the story in the first few pages and kept on reading. This isn't a fairy tale so not really any neatly tied up strings - kept me guessing until the end. The author gives some references for her inspiration and I plan on checking them out.
Elegantly Written With Gripping Story!! .......2007-06-06
Should really rate 5 stars. This was a wonderful book which not only held my interest, made me cheer on the heroine [much like Celie], but also made me ashamed of our past. I immediately purchased Susan Straight's "Highwire Moon." [Haven't yet read this...I look forward to readng this.] I immediately passed this along to a friend & am recommending it to co-workers, etc. A terrific read -- enjoy!
A million annoyances..........2006-12-08
I just couldn't get into this book. The plot dragged on and on with little action, unless you count the description of Cephaline's "boutons" and Moinette picking and chewing on her hands/fingers and fiddling with coffee beans and clothespins. I didn't care what happened to her at all, and decided not to finish the book. If a book doesn't draw me in by the first 100 pages, it's getting returned to the library.
To say it is powerful is an understatement.......2006-09-03
I have not read a book this profoundly moving in a long, long time. I read books all the time--good books, bad books, mediocre books, books my friends have written--and with each book I read, my heart yearns for something that is as exquisitely written as A Million Nightingales. Every book Susan Straight has written has been thoughtfully, creatively rendered. I have read and loved all of them. But this one, by far, will be placed on my list of favorite books of all time. The words of the text sing like a lyrical psalm of outcry to god for the grief of children, for the grief of mothers, for the grief of souls separated by cruelty and greed. This book will touch the heart of anyone who believes that we must be reminded of true things, even if they are painful, so that we can move forward instead of repeating the past. A Million Nightingales is not a chronicle of hate, but rather an anthem of love.

A Chance in a Million.......2006-11-30
Book Description: A Dynamic Consultant . . . And A Student Nurse?
"I'm not aware that I am restricted in my actions by anyone or anything." Arrogant, rich and devastatingly attractive, Marius van Houben was the sort of man who was used to getting his own way. He certainly wasn't prepared for Caroline's plainspoken, commonsense approach. After all, as a student nurse, both qualities were an asset . . . If only Marius thought the same!
Marius van Houben, rich, good-looking Dutch Doctor, knew Caroline Frisby, plain, sensible, British Nurse, was right for the job of nursing and supervising Marc's recovery back home in Holland. She had established and excellent rapport with the little boy while he was in the hospital in England. Marius van Houben, the boy's uncle, was rich, attractive and successful-and very single. He wanted her to nurse his nephew; what were the chances that he would want more? ...Especially when he already has a beautiful, but evil, girlfriend. Caroline knew that there was one chance in a million that she would be "the" girl in a million.

Marius van Houben, the boy's uncle, was rich, attractive and successful--and very single. He could have any girl he wanted. What were the chances that he would want her? Heart-warming story as usual. Great lead characters, the plot moves and a happy ending, what more could you want.

Extended loving fan letter.......2006-05-18
Just as some biographies emphasise the negative qualities and scandals of some stars, this valentine to Betty Grable does the opposite. It is a detailed and loving tribute to the star. The author became a personal friend of Grable and was able to draw on talks with her over an extended period so we get many quotes from Grable herself.
The photos are excellent. If there is any criticism to make it, it is that the book does gloss over Grable's problems. It is a pity, as the author states, that her daughters did not participate. While she was obviously a warm, modest and funny woman, it would seem that while she may have wanted to be a good mother, she really wasn't equipped to be. Her own childhood was hardly normal since she began performing at age 12. Also, there is no doubt that her husband Harry James was a louse. Grable should have been financially secure, allowing her more time for her family but she was cleaned out supporting James's gambling habits, not that her own love of the horses etc did not have a bearing too. Whether she wanted to continue to work or not, she certainly had to.
The author captures what an excellent all round entertainer Grable was and there are plenty of personal details about her films, her exploitation by Darryl Zanuck, her eventual resistance to this exploitation and her own lack of ego.
An interesting and enjoyable read.
A vain testament to Ms. Grable.......2005-11-08
I have been a Betty Grable fan since I was small. It is odd for a kid today to rather watch old movies than new ones. I am now in my twenties and interested in bios. Betty and Ginger Rogers have always been my favorites. After reading this book, I do not like Betty Grable. It seems as if the author and Ms. Grable are both very stuck on HER. She seems VAIN from my understanding of the book. I could not finish it because the more I read, the more I disliked her, and I want to enjoy her movies. Ginger Rogers "Ginger: My story" and Ester Williams "Million Dollar Marmaid" autobiographies were much more interesting. I suggest those over this one any day.
Great book!.......2003-10-29
A wonderfully researched and well-written book about a trully magnificent woman.
A Personal Insight into Hollywood's Box Office Champ.......2001-11-23
Betty Grable was the star whose pinup photograph was the most popular among World War Two servicemen. The vibrant blonde star also set a record that has never come close to being equaled in reigning as Hollywood's female box office champ for an incredible ten years. What made movie fans throughout the world love Betty Grable?
Scottish author Tom McGee supplies the answer to that question in his entertaining biography of the popular film great. A personal friend of Grable's who had the opportunity to interview her at length on many occasions, McGee etches an enduring portrait of a wholesome, caring woman who always put warmth as a human being and loyalties to family and friends above star persona. Ego was never a problem with the popular superstar in an industry often overcome by it. When one sees such a warm and totally unaffected woman emerge in the pages of "The Girl With The Million Dollar Legs" it becomes obvious that people the world over loved Betty Grable because of the vibrance, warmth, and sweetness they saw in her.
McGee's book is also rich in photographs capturing Grable and the luminous era in which she starred. There is also a warmly affecting Foreword by fellow Twentieth Century Fox blonde glamour girl, Alice Faye. Grable and Faye became great friends with no animosity or jealousy ever emerging.
This book is a must for Grable fans and all those who love the exciting cinema era of the forties and fifties. It is so refreshing to read a movie biography devoid of trashy gossip and petty commentary.
Grable could not deserve better, fabulous.......2001-11-17

One woman's take (based on personal experience) on how to build a significant biz - one that grosses over $1 million annually!.......2007-10-10
This was a wonderful book to read. I'm not exactly sure why it is a "Girl's Guide" except for the fact that it is written by a woman based on her own personal experiences. But it's a great book for a woman to read regarding the ins-and-outs of starting a business. Furthermore, it emphasizes that significant companies with $1 million in annual gross revenues are something MORE women should strive to create. And this book should help motivate a woman to do just that - build a big one.
The book is pretty straightforward in its approach regarding how to start a business and then grow it. It is broken into 3 sections as follows:
1. Laying the groundwork for a Million-Dollar business (1-3)
2. Using the 4 strategic keys to growing your business (4-7)
3. Accelerating your business growth (8-10)
The chapters included are as follows:
1. Start the Million-Dollar journey
2. Think big and bold
3. Get ready, get set, grow
4. Create the vision
5. Develop the right team
6. Implement key marketing strategies
7. Fund your business growth
8. Develop growth strategies
9. The rest of the story
10. Great resources
I was particularly impressed with the coverage of business plans. The author definitely believes in them and that they are very important to a business owner and or manager. The importance of business plans, the elements of business plans, and key questions for business plans were all discussed. But this book does not go into too much depth on how to actually write a business plan.
According to this book less than 3% of all businesses are women-owned. And compared to the 6% figure for men-owned business, there is clearly a need for the instant book. It is well written and fun to read. 5 stars!

Sydnie's Review.......2003-03-25
This book is one of the best I have ever read. I am so happy that something like this was published, and it is so amazing how this author can write like this. It is such a wonderful novel that I think it should be sold over the world. Many, many sequals should be written after this.
(\/)Luv it!

Loved it.......2003-01-05
This book is wonderful-and I promise you that you'll agree when you read it. The characters come to life and the author's writing pulls you in and leaves you craving more long after you've finished the book.
The book is about a television hearthrob named Logan Maddox who wants to spend some time as a normal teen-so he enrolls in high school. There, he meets Emy. She's smart, quiet, and anti-social. They make each other feel things they have never felt before-but what happens when Hollywood offers Logan an offer that would be hard for anyone to refuse?
This book was a joy to read, and I've been out of high school for many years. Buy this book!
