REAL history lessons!.......2007-09-28
This is a fabulous book - it ought to be part of the lesson plans in every high school! Written so that even George Bush could read it - maybe not fully comprehend it. (hehe) Makes a great gift too!
America knows not the way of peace or reconciliation.......2007-06-05
in comic-book form Joel exposes the several and perrenial trend of war and imperialism imposed by the USA on other nations, and for the purpose of avarice and power by both the military officials, members of the US government, and the industrial giants that manufacture weapons. War is hell only for the recruit or victim, but it is money, comfort and political and economic freedom for every person involved in its propagation.
As the title indicates, America is so engulfed and obsessed by war and its related industies, that it does not know, and cannot handle, any other manner of resolving international conflict.
wake up americans.......2007-05-07
This book is excellent, it explains the way things really work in america in a simple way that anyone can understand
Worshippers of ignorance and stupidity unite!.......2007-03-31
The only reason this book gets one star is because anyone who doesn't worship ignorance and stupidity will quickly realize that this is little more than a left-wing "comic book" endorsed by none other than Noam Chomsky.
Even more disgraceful is the fact that certain schools in San Francisco actually consider this teaching tool!
Joel Andreas is to be commended for managing to write a book equivalent to a bag of garbage that certain segments of the population actually buy!
Well done!.......2007-03-15
A great primer of the history of U.S. militarism, the history of war. An excellent first book and introduction to the historical facts. It presents them in a easy to read straightforward way.
One drawback is that it seems to rely on some of the more official 9/11 material (i.e. The 911 Commission). The facts presented are clear and references for them are provided.

Great easy to read football book!!!.......2005-11-03
I came across an old copy of this book at a thrift shop. After reading this book to my 4 year old son it became a favorite of his.
A strange object falls into the middle of the woods where a group of animals inspect it and wonder what it is. Soon a boy comes to get it and takes it back to the football feild. The animals follow and watch from a distance as the boys play football. Then the animals have an a brilliant idea to play their own game of football. What will they use for a the ball?
This is a great book for 2 to 6 year olds and any child learning to read.
Special.......2001-11-02
This was one of the first books I ever read by myself, and I frequently used to go look for it in the library to re-read it. One of the more endearing books in my memory.
An excellent book for little football fans.......1999-01-22
Both of our sons love sports. And both have loved this book. It's simple, easy to understand and easy to enjoy. I, and my boys, like it because the stars are the animals, and the little boys that play football. The pictures are simple and descriptive enough to convey the message and the story moves along quickly enough to keep short attention spans occupied. We've read Kick pass and Run hundreds of times in the last 4 years, and now that we own a copy of it ourselves, we'll probably read it twice as often.

Are These Dream-Busters Keeping You From Going After Your Dreams?
Today
With Just A Little Encouragement, You Can Take Control Of Your Life And Truly Live A Richer, More Balanced Life Doing Work You Really Love
"By the time you've hit your 20's," says Walter Anderson, author of Courage is a Three Letter Word and The Greatest Risk of All, "you'll have heard a whopping 25,000 "can'ts."
Twenty-five THOUSAND
that's a lot of "can'ts."
"You can't work at what you love and make a good living." "Impossible. Can't be done."
What most people call "reality" is a very poor place to nurture dreams
and to share them to others? Forget it.
Erma Bombeck once said, "It takes a lot of courage to show your dreams to someone else." Erma knew that other people's fear, skepticism and negativity can be as contagious as the flu. And unless you've built up your immune system, these dream stompers can knock you - and your precious dreams - for a loop.
Don't believe me? Imagine announcing to your family and friends that you've decided to quit your job to become a writer, or a personal organizer, or an aroma-therapist, or work with animals, or pursue your love for antiques, or travel the world for a year. What do you think their reaction would be? Would they encourage you to "go for it?" Or might it sound more like this
"Yeah, right in your dreams."
"It'll never work."
"Better to play it safe."
If you listen to the naysayers out there, the message is loud and clear. Stay stuck, don't even dare to hope, forget your dreams.
Is it any wonder you're probably finding it hard to take control of your life and whole-heartedly pursue your dreams?
Think about how all the "It'll never work," "Forget your crazy dreams," "You should be happy that you have a job," messages have buried themselves deep into your psyche and affected how you see the world.
For example, if you sat down right now and took a personal inventory of your life, would your list look something like this?
~I'm miserable in my job. But it's impossible to make any money doing what I love.
~I feel like life is passing me by... but there's nothing I can do about it.
~I keep thinking there has to be more to life than this
. I suppose I should just forget my crazy dreams
Sound familiar? Okay, so what do you do?
Well, for starters you might want to think about what will happen if you do nothing. Close your eyes and picture what your life will be like if you continue to be ruled by your fears and self-doubts and heed the red lights thrown up by your well-meaning family and friends. In other words, imagine staying where you are right now
day after day, year after year dragging yourself through the work week until you retire. Pretty scary isn't it?
Now imagine feeling encouraged and empowered to go after your dream. Picture yourself looking back at your life and basking in the self-satisfaction of knowing you went for it
. If you like the way that felt then you've already begun to experience how powerful it is to readjust your thinking. You see the thing is
If you really want to create a more balanced, rewarding life doing work you truly love, you'll need to create a mindset that will instantly turn `can't' into `can.' There will always be dream dashers.
But the world is also full of people who believe in the power of a dream. There's just no better way to adjust your mindset than by "hanging out" with a group of people who know how to guide you along your path and give you that inspirational jolt you need to stop wishing and start doing.
That's exactly what you'll get in Yes You Can! The Inspirational Kick in the Pants You Need To Take Control Of Your Life and Go After Your Dreams.

An Absolutely Fabulous Read!.......2006-07-27
I think I was most surprised by the fact that this book is a compilation of articles by different people. Once I got past that, I began to realize that each person had, to varying degrees, experienced the anxiety I've felt at being locked into a job that brings no joy. To realize that there are others are taking that leap into the unknown and finding happiness while the "normals" stand by and scratch their heads at what is surely insanity is massive relief. And to find that these "insane" people are holding their hands out to the rest of us who are a little afraid of our inner "insanity" to show us the way and to help us to realize that not going after our dreams is indeed the end of our happiness. Going after our dreams should be the "normal" thing to do, and Thank You to people like Valerie Young, Barbera Sher, Jerry Stocking ("Quitting A Job - Without Plan B", read the "Yes You Can" book and you'll know what I'm talking about!), and others who are helping us fraidy cats get out there and take control of our lives!

One of my favorite books ever........2005-07-20
I don't know what I expected when I picked up this book, but I definitely did not expect to read one of the funniest and most memorable books I have ever read. I found myself laughing out loud several times during this book (loudest perhaps at the scene where Mack walks, reluctantly, down the Holy Road).
Much like in "White Widow", the author does a wonderful job of taking you to another time and place.
Soon after I finished this book (years after it was written) I was thrilled to learn that there is a continuation of the life of The One Eyed Mack, in "Crown Oklahoma". I can't wait to start it.
Don't miss this one!.......2003-08-09
Who would ever suspect that veteran newsman, Jim Lehrer, would be one of the most delightful comic writers ever. Kick the Can is one of those rare laugh aloud books that keep the reader chuckling from beginning to end. In addition to the "One Eyed Mack" the hero of the story, he introduces us to other such unforgettable characters as "Pepper" Bowen and Brother Walt. This book is just as funny the second or third time you read it - a real treat. Read it! You'll like it!
This brings back memories.......2002-12-14
My brother gave me a beat up copy of this book when I was about 12 years old. I haven't seen a copy in years! I read this book countless times and found it to be a very interesting and humerous read. I'd recommend this book to anyone that comes across it anywhere. I don't know what compelled me to like this book so much. Maybe it was the reasoning the the lead character "The One Eyed Mack" exhibited throughout the book. I can tell you that I am definately going to get another copy to add to my collection
A delightful romp for people who enjoy the political scene........1999-11-04
KICK THE CAN is the first of a series of novels by Lehrer, and the book is the beginning of a wonderful tour through middle American politics. It is a great treat for people who take their politics with a grain of humor. It is hard to believe that this series is known about only by word of mouth. It should be seen in great books reviews and mentioned in the media.

Common Ground.......2004-04-27
After reading the book, I found myself taking a common ground. It really depends on who reads the book. Obviously someone who has lost a loved one to this dreaded virus will probably have trouble reading this book. On the flip, someone who has not dealt with this virus first hand will be afraid and warned while reading the book. I have to say the author gave a horrid view of living and dying with AIDS. The book is worth reading. I have read all three of this authors books, and I like her style.
Shocking.......2004-04-15
This book changed my life. AIDS and HIV is a reality. I promised myself I will stop sleeping around after reading the book. I am not going to be like the character in the book. I am not ready to die. The author did a darn good job.
Author's View.......2004-04-15
This book may be depressing to some readers, still, living and dying from AIDS can be depressing. It was not my intent to upset any reader. I strive to be real and that's my whole point in writing.
Depressing.......2004-03-23
Life Can Definetly Kick Your Ass: Here Comes AIDS and HIV, by Victoria Warren. It was good book, but kind of depressing, especially after having a brother die of AIDS. I could definetly relate to the character, Shanna and how she felt about her sister Desiree having HIV/AIDS. You feel helpless and hopeless. There's nothing that you can do about the situation but try to comfort and be there for the person that's infected with it. I think that women need to be extremely careful and cautious when it comes to dealing with men and sex, that holds the same for men as well when dealing with women; even though the book is fiction, the story that it's telling happens everyday, someone is infected with and dying from AIDS/HIV.
The only thing that I didn't like about the writing is that the author tended to give every detail about every movement that the character made. That got on my nerves.

Andreas' accessible drawing style makes this illustrated examination of US war and military spending history from a critical standpoint an enjoyable read. Even if you're familiar with the history focused on here, the presentation will make it seem fresh and new. Tons of facts and quotes are packed into the comic strip panels. So worth your time.......2007-10-07
Where should I start with L.A Banks vampire huntress series, well I must say the Minion was the introduction to the series was not bad,was no page turner same goes for the Awakeing. If these two books won't important to the series I would say skip It. Now the Hunted Is the book you want to read and from there Is where the real action starts you can't finish It fast enough to start the others. These books are so worth your reading time minus the Minion and the Awakeing.
Nice story, but..........2007-07-02
My friend recommended this book to me. I love Vampire tales and I was very excited to find a series written by an Black author. My library didn't have the first two books, so I dove into the "The Hunted."
Well, I'll start off with saying that I didn't finish the book. Here's why:
Even though I enjoyed some of the fight scenes, they seemed sort of unrealistic. I just couldn't get into them and for some reason it seemed as if the author left something out.
I enjoyed reading the story through Carlos' point of view. I found myself skipping over the Huntress' (I can't remember her name. For Shame!) parts of the story. Like some of the other readers, I was a little displeased by the use of slang. It just seemed strained to me. Like the characters were trying so hard to sound real and natural, that the result was completely unnatural and fake. However, from the parts I read, Carlos' part was so much better. Everything from his speech patterned and the general writing seemed much better. I began to wish he was the lead character so I can see how his side of the story ended. But, since I skipped around so much, I just gave up and dropped the book off at the library.
But, I did like some things about the book. I did like how her version of vampire politics and structure. It wasn't my favorite, but it did well for the story.
[3.5]--You'll love some passionately and hate others intensely.......2007-04-04
Again, Ms. Banks has created an outstanding work of fiction. The Hunted is another great installment to this series. A slightly more bulkier novel but it is surprisingly a fast and tense read. Due to real life, I was forced to put the book down, and each time I did--no matter where I had closed the pages--I was left on the edge of a cliff, my attention focused on the next time I would be able to read this book. She is able to bring her own unique spin to the vampire mythos to fruition with "The Hunted."
This book was sexier, darker and grittier; finally allowing the passion between Damali and Carlos to explode in one of the best love scenes I've ever had a chance to read; upping the ante on Carlos' "life" and his deals; exposing more of the Neteru's heritage; and upping the tension between Damali and Carlos, Carlos and his enemies, The guardians and their chosen paths; etc, etc. The Hunted has taken Banks' series to an entirely different level where your emotions will be sure to run like a predator, unless you are dead. Damali is near to coming into her own; in this novel, she being forced to deal with things and situations that she formerly shielded herself from due to certain circumstances. She is all Neteru in this book and I can't wait until I read "The Bitten."
Once again, however, the dialogue is the major sticking point for me. While it's dynamic and true to life, I find it a bit tedious after a while and hard to follow when more than one character is "speaking". To me, there is very little in the way of personalization and uniqueness to the characters with regards to the dialogue.
But, overall, I admire Ms. Banks' contributions to vampire fiction and look forward to many more great books in the Vampire Huntress series.
terrible writen book and book.......2007-03-19
I really was disappointed in this book and author. I nver read L.A. Banks before and thought I give it a try. The cover captured my attention...once again people don't let the cover fool you...thought I learned from prior bad books with nice covers. I DID NOT UNDERSTAND MOST OF THIS BOOK AT ALL. I AM NOT FLUENT IN BLACK SLANG. L.A. BANKS SHOULD OF WRITEN THIS BOOK IN PROPER ENGLISH AND NOT SLANG THEN THE BOOK WOULD OF BEEN OK. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE AT ALL. I HAD TO SKIP THROUGHT THE ENTIRE BOOK AND GET THE TORTURE OVER WITH QUICKLY! I WAS SO LOST,I KEPT SAYING TO MYSELF WHAT IS SHE TALKING ABOUT! I DO NOT LIKE TO READ SLANG BOOKS AND WISH BLACK AUTHORS WOULD WRITE GOOD BOOKS IN PROPER ENGLISH AND NOT SLANGGGG! I WILL NEVER READ HER AGAIN. I REALLY TRIED TO AND GAVE HER A CHANCE BUT I JUST COULD NOT UNDERSTAND HER WRITING AND THE WHOLE BOOK. THAT IS IT FOR ME
Great continuance of a great series.......2007-01-05
Of course I love reading "The Hunted" by L.A.Banks over and over again simply for the fact that I love her books. Her Vampire Huntress Legends series is outstanding and I recommend that everyone of every ethnic read these books because they expound on historical facts and symbols of importance that I believe everyone can relate to. If you don't read this book you'll lose out.
