One evening, he was walking home from his farm. The fiery eye of the sky sprayed the last golden dust to the horizon before bidding good-bye to the day. Silence reigned all around, interrupted sporadically only by the sound of a cricket or a frog's cry. Suddenly, a bicycle bell rang behind him. Without turning back, he opted to move to the left. The rider hit a pothole, lost control of the vehicle and ran over Campus. Both fell to the ground and, as they looked at each other, they blushed and then broke into a sonorous laughter. She apologized for the accident, but he made nothing of it, helped her to stand up and to dust off her skirt. It was then that a couple of tears fell down her cheeks and ended in the yellow dust. He wiped the tears from her face with his handkerchief and hugged her.

4 out of 5 stars Good Graphic Novel.......2007-09-27

Good read, not as ground-breaking as others before it, but still a good read for your suspension of disbelief

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-25

There are high stakes here, and high power on top of that. With the arrival of yet another Supergirl retcon into the dc universe, many players are interested. From a hopeful and lonely Superman to a suspicious Batman, a worried villain fraternity and Darkseid, who sees a big opportunity.

Even giving her to Wonder Woman to train comes at a cost.

4 out of 5 stars The new Supergirl. How many have there been?.......2007-09-24

Story: acceptable. Art: ranges from good to mindblowing, athough Turner needs to practice drawing feet. This has a place on your shelf.

4 out of 5 stars pretty good kara re-intro..........2007-05-11

well i have mixed feelings about this. the art is great, the story is fairly good until the end. the end of the book is so extremely cheesy it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. superman introduces supergirl to the jla, jsa, titans, etc. and it's god-awful cheese. but i like the beginning of the book when kara lands and batman finds her.

5 out of 5 stars Enter Kara Zor-El.......2007-05-08

This collection is a follow up to 'Public Enemies' and reintroduces Superman's Cousin Kara Zor-El to the DCU. The storyline is even more intriguing then its predecessor and the art is equally as incredible (no body can draw Batman better then Michael Turner).

Lex Luthor may have been insane, but he wasn't wrong. Superman was what drew the kryptonite asteroid to earth. While inspecting pieces of sunken meteor rock in Gotham's Harbors Batman discovers a space ship with kryptonian writing. He is soon in pursuit of a naked teenage girl whom has powers remarkably similar to Supermans. After subduing her with green kryptonite Batman takes her back to the cave for analysis. It is there that they discover that she is indeed kryptonian and related to Superman himself.

Finally feeling like he isn't alone in the universe Clark bonds with his cousin immediately. He trusts her completely and even reveals his secret identity to her after only a few days. Bruce however isn't so trust worthy, he suspects that she is some elaborate trap and arranges for the girl to be taken away to Themyscira (Paradise Island) where she is trained by Wonder Woman. Just when Bats suspicion is subsiding Darkseid launches a full scale attack on the island and kidnaps Kara. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Barda now have to travel to Apokolips to bring her back. However, are they willing to destroy an entire planet to do so? And even more, will Kara even want to come back?

This collection is defiantly worth picking up. After reading this I snatched up Supergirl: Power, Kara Zor-El is quickly becoming one of my favorite DCU characters.

+This trade contains a guide to kryptonian so all you fanboys and girls can translate the language yourself.

4 out of 5 stars An improvement compared to the first story.......2007-09-16

Compared to the first Supergirl story arc, this book isn't as bad as most make it seem. First off, we get to return to Kandor which hasn't been seen since Godfall (A pretty good Superman read). The adventure in Kandor is interesting and has Power Girl and Supergirl take on the identities of Flamebird and Nightwing, heroes from Krypton's past. I admit when I first heard of this I wasn't sure it would be good but it really surprised the heck out of me.

The true gem is the way KAra Zor-el was displayed in this arc. We were shown how powerful Supergirl was in her first trade but this collection goes into her character more then her abilities. Supergirl is unsure of her role in a world that looks up to her cousin, Superman. The writers here do a good job of not only displaying a teenaged superhero who might not want to put on the cape because she has the power to make a difference. Instead we see a girl who hasn't grown up yet, She runs from responsiblity and avoids the one person who cares about her the most.

As far as the extra story thrown in involving the JLA, I guess that was DC trying to show what Supergirl was doing before the crisis and how she was recruited by Donna Troy. The thought of making sure the reader knows what happens before OYL is appreciated but they could of just easily put a paragraph explaining what happened (and saved money)

People can say what they want about this title but I feel the writers have done an excellent job of making the Girl of Steel as human as possible. The upcoming thrid volume of Supergirl is even better.

2 out of 5 stars What the Heck?.......2007-06-24

It only gets two stars because of the artwork

As everyone else says, these story makes absolutely no sense. It exhibits the same problems that are occurring more often in the series: "Let's just have stuff happen and ignore whether it fits into anything". It's like they were making it up as they went along hoping no one would notice they didn't know where they were going.

They made it clear that the black costume Supergirl was a physical manifestation, not an illusion. She could physically interact with other objects (including the "real" Supergirl) and they saw her and talked with her. Where did she come from? Who knows? What was she? Dunno. At the end, when she disappears when confronted by "Truth"--Why? Where did she go? Apparently we aren't supposed to be concerned with these howlers.

BTW, DC, you've got to know better this, but you seem to keep ignoring it (or maybe your authors and editors really don't know it): You don't just run out of air when you find yourself in a vacuum, your internal organs rupture fairly quickly because your internal pressure is still there but there's no corresponding external pressure. Even more basic: YOU CAN'T TALK IN A VACUUM!

3 out of 5 stars Great art, very confusing story.......2007-06-10

Title says it all. As the other Supergirl books, it's beautiful art. However, the book takes place halfway between the recent Crisis and then it has a very abrupt shift in story in the middle of the book and it makes it hard to pick back up.

    1 out of 5 stars Huh?.......2007-06-06

Am I the only one who had no idea what was going on? Not only is it confusing between the stories but the individual stories are confusing. I can't find enough continuity to figure out what's happening.

(I wasn't even that impressed with the artwork.)

2 out of 5 stars i agree with the other reviewer..........2007-05-11

i also didn't hate supergirl: power and thought it was pretty good, even though i'll admit it was a bit wacky with the premise of let's make a black costume supergirl fight everyone. but who knows what's going on in this book. it seems to be a collection of unrelated stories.

      5 out of 5 stars Supergirl rules!.......2007-09-03

Whether you like Superheroes romantic approach or not you can not deny Supergirl is a strong part of the Superman mithos. The fact that some incredible genius RESURRECTED her these last years brings JOY, PEACE and a overwhelming feeling of GRATITUDE to these guys. I have tons of comics of her and let me tell you the story is HARD and HEAVY, it really rocks, the art is beyond words and I got to tell you that Jeph Loeb and Ian made a remarkable team for one of the best comics I could ever purchased! I love Supergirl and maybe I am being a little partial, but believe me, if you like good comics get this one, it will trap you to follow up the story of the Girl of Steel. I salute you!

5 out of 5 stars The Maid of Might Takes Flight.......2007-05-20

'Supergirl: Power' (or as I like to call it 'Kara vs. DCU') is the immediate follow up to the 'Supergirl' story arc in the 'Superman/Batman' series. It documents Kara Zor-El's first adventures as The Girl of Steel and raises a lot of questions about the true motives of her arrival here on earth.

'Power' collects issue #19 of 'Superman/Batman' and issues 1-5 of the regular 'Supergirl' series.

Someone is keeping tabs on Kara, and it isn't Batman. Whoever it is has been setting up disasters around the world to 'test' the new kryptonians abilities. These 'tests' include blowing up the Hoover Dam, sending terrorists to the Eiffel Tower, and shooting down Air Force One. After dealing with Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and Clayface, Kara goes looking for someone she can talk to, someone to be a friend, someone who can answer all of her questions. Her travels bring her in contact with the Justice Society of America, Teen Titans, Outsiders, and even the League. They all confirm her suspicions; there is something dark inside her. Kara discovers that the person who has been spying on her is non-other then Lex Luthor. After a little showdown she is exposed to black kryptonite and has a 'splitting of the minds' so to speak. Kara has to figure out who she really is, was she a good girl gone bad? Was she always evil? Or is blue, yellow, and red her true colors after all?

The reason I called this arc 'Kara vs. DCU' at the beginning of this review was because it basically is. Kara (in one form or another) takes on all of the major hero's in the DC Universe. She fights Power Girl, Superboy, Wondergirl, Raven, The Outsiders (minus Nightwing), The Justice League, Wonderwoman, Batman, and finally Superman himself. She even occupies a Green Lantern power ring for a short while.

I loved this arc, it wasn't as good as 'Superman/Batman: Supergirl' but it was still good enough to earn a five star rating from me. The art is brilliant and the story is as good as you can expect coming from a literary genius such as Jeph Loeb.

I do however suggest reading 'Superman/Batman: Public Enemies' and 'Superman/Batman: Supergirl' first. I mean, you don't really have to, Loeb provides a quick recap of how Kara Zor-El came to be on earth, but everything will feel a lot more complete if you've read the arcs leading up to this series first.

      5 out of 5 stars Great magazine!!.......2007-05-14

This is a great item! Drawings are excellent. Worth to have it in your collection.!

4 out of 5 stars not as bad as some are saying here..........2007-05-08

this isn't the dark knight returns, but this really isn't as bad as people are saying. i thought this was a pretty enjoyable graphic novel. after this i read the superman/batman: supergirl graphic novel and everyone loves that series and i thought that book had a lot of promise but was ultimately cheesy and poorly done (especially the end). this one looked better in retrospect. ok maybe it was a crazy idea just to get a black costume supergirl out to fight everyone but it's not bad.

1 out of 5 stars Painful....save your money Kara fans.......2007-04-09

Many fans of the original pre-Crisis Supergirl cheered when DC Comics and scribe Jeph Loeb announced he was 'bringing Kara Zor-El back' in the pages of SUPERMAN/BATMAN. But here in this TPB, which contains the first five issues of the current SUPERGIRL run (plus an additional one-shot story taken from SUPERMAN/BATMAN), someone should have warned, "Be very careful what you wish for." Because it soon becomes clear that Loeb has pulled a typical 'bait and switch' on nostalgic fandom.

The vapid blonde tart depicted here may use the name "Kara Zor-El" and possess the usual Kryptonian abilities, but that's pretty much the ONLY elements this new version of SG has in common with her pre-Crisis counterpart. And instead of setting up a 'new' character within her given DCU environment for the length of this story arc, Loeb treats us instead to Kara's pointless fisticuffs with almost every DCU Super-team she runs into. If the point of this tiresome exercise was to explore Supergirl's idea of "power" in regards to herself and her earthly environs, then Loeb utterly fails in this regard, as he pulls another 'bait and switch' on Kara's backstory in the obviously rushed last chapter.

Also, to make matters worse, artist Ian Churchill only possesses about three generic facial expressions for Supergirl and the supporting cast, and instead focuses on lurid illustrations of SG's bizarre elongated torso and too-short skirt for socially-repressed fanboys. While this may be all-too-typical of Churchill's Image-derived (by way of Rob Liefeld) style, the art overall seems pretty out of place for depicting a archetypal teenaged superheroine who's often cited as a role model for girls.

All in all, Supergirl fans would be far better off seeking one of her DC Archives collections of the Silver Age, because SUPERGIRL: POWER looks and reads more like it was ironically named after Jeph Loeb's Hollywood-sized ego.

4 out of 5 stars See an Icon in her Whimsical Innocence.......2006-04-08

When the planet Krypton exploded, Argo City miraculously survived under a bubble of air. However, the ground soon turned into kryptonite. Despite the diligent efforts of scientist Zor-El, Argo City was soon destroyed, save for Zor-el's daughter, Kara. He sent her to Earth, where he had discovered another Kryptonian survivor: Superman. In a quirk of fate, Superman is in fact Kara's cousin. Discovering her rocket, Superman takes the newly arrived Supergirl to a local orphanage, where, under the guise of Linda Lee, she must remain hidden. For Superman realizes she needs to learn Earth's ways, and he sees an opportunity to develop a secret weapon.

I have a personal caveat when it comes to reading vintage comics: plot over character. This is especially true for silver age super-hero comics, which were predominantly aimed at kids, and so went more for elaborate plot gimmickry. Another caveat must be brought to "The Supergirl Archives" Vol. 1: this series of stories, written by almost exclusively adult men, was aimed at girls. As such, it's not hard to see certain presumptions of the day taken at the heart of most of these stories. Indeed, the central premise of the series it pretty "girl-friendly": Supergirl must live covertly as Linda, never allowing her existence be known. When she does go into action, it's usually to prevent some disaster, or solve some minor problem around the orphanage. In other words, Supergirl wasn't given much opportunity to punch out Lex Luthor.

Written mainly by Otto Binder, the stories are whimsical, and get a great deal of mileage out of the simple idea of a 15-year-old girl with super powers. While Linda can't operate in the open, she does get a great deal of satisfaction in being able to help her fellows at the orphanage, be it to help them with adoption or simply blowing away rain clouds. Jim Mooney's art, while similar to the other artists on Superman, is still very good, and grew more distinct as the series progressed, conveying the good natured fun cleanly and with tremendous energy.

It's hard to pin down any favorites. Most are quite fun and satisfying. There are some that take the premise of the character to illogical extremes, as Superman puts Supergirl through some harsh and dubious tests to prove her ability to keep her secret. There is also one story, "Mighty Maid", in which Supergirl poses as Superman's super-powered girlfriend, that is just creepy when one thinks about it too much. However, these are minor pitfalls in a collection of stories that feature Supergirl trying to develop immunity to kryptonite, and then accidently giving a normal cat super powers, Supergirl getting adopted by a police officer and his wife, and a team-up with the Legion of Super-heroes, among others.

"The Crisis on Infinite Earths" killed and then erased this version of Supergirl from existence. She's recently been reintroduced after a couple of different versions. It's nice see the character when she was fresh and simple.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book of Supergirl adventures.......2006-04-01

I am a fan of the Superman family of comics and love Supergirl. It was a joy to read this book and learn of Supergirl's origins. The book is very well made and the graphics are terrific. I would highly recommend this book to any fan of Supergirl. I just wish there was a similar book written for Superboy and also one for Lois Lane or Jimmy Olsen. I loved those comics as a kid as well.

The first Supergirl Archive contains the introduction and the earliest adventures of the Silver Age(classic) Supergirl, the one and only Kara Zor-El. In this book, you will see Kara struggle with maintaining her superhero identity(as Supergirl) secret from the world, and you will laugh at her ingenuity as this spunky female superhero finds ways to balance the secrecy and still fight the good fight as Supergirl. By modern standards, the art may seem simplistic, but the stories are fun, and move along at a relatively quick pace. Stories included are : Superman #123, and Action Comics #252-269.

      ~part 2~

The second Supergirl Archive includes the following stories: Action Comics # 269-285. In this volume, Supergirl(a.k.a Kara Zor-El) is publicly introduced to the world as Supergirl. Also, this second hardcover collection of classic stories contains Supergirl's first encounter with the futuristic superhero team, the Legion of Superheroes. Once again, these classic stories are suitable for all ages.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Siegel's original Supergirl is the best!.......2004-02-14

I really love the first and original Supergirl/Linda Lee by Jerry Siegel! She was truly, truly the best, compared to the later supergirls. I hope WB can adapt Jerry Siegel's original Supergirl/Linda Lee and add her to TV's Smallville later on! Also, the comics writers made a huge mistake by killing the original supergirl in the 1980's and coming up with inferior supergirls afterwards. They should have just retired her peacefully on earth and leave Linda Lee/Supergirl alive! To me, she's always been Earth's Guardian Angel after Superman!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Silver Age fun........2003-11-02

The best part of the Supergirl archives is that it is strongly set in the Superman universe where the most outlandish things can happen with nary a bat of an eye. This is the tall tales and folklore of the 20th Century.

A fun read and a vacation from the all too self conscious comics of today.

well the first supergirl books i've ever read are the newer ones so maybe that's why i didn't really love this one. all the reboots every time there is a new 'crisis' or when a new writer comes on is pretty much ruining comics. i didn't know much about supergirl except she died in the awful but mysteriously highly esteemed series crisis on infinite earths. i was thinking about reading the new legion of super-heroes books but since they've been rebooted a half-dozen times at least and supergirl's in there too, i might be so totally confused it may not be worth the time. i thought crisis on infinite earths was supposed to resolve all the problems with dc having multiple flashes, supermans, etc. but with 52 ending and the return of the multiverse i guess it's just going to be one big mess again? i hated infinite crisis as well because if i look on a comics page and see like 14 supermen from different universes or whatever the book is automatically garbage as far as i'm concerned.

5 out of 5 stars A superhuman story that is surprisingly touching.......2007-01-02

Peter David is often regarded as one of the best writers in comics, and there is good reason for that. He spent years writing the Incredible Hulk for Marvel (and still remains the best writer to ever tackle the character), and with this final arc for the old Supergirl series for DC, David takes his love for the classic pre-Crisis age stories and infuses them with a modern edge. Linda Danvers is the brunette, blonde-wig wearing earth bound Supergirl who now finally has the respect of her fellow super heroes and she has a grip on her life now as well. Naturally, none of it lasts long. Out of the sky comes blonde haired, cheery, and naive Kara Zor-El, claiming to be Superman's cousin Supergirl. What neither girl knows is that reality is being played around with, and that Kara is destined to die in the penultimate battle from Crisis on Infinite Earths. I don't want to go into anymore because the story that develops is surprisingly touching and offers up some even more surprises to boot. Not to mention that Ed Benes' (Birds of Prey) gorgeous pencil work conjures up some truly drool worthy interpretations of the female form. Because the title never really sold all that well, Many Happy Returns ended up being the final arc for the title, which is all the more fitting a send off. Much like Clark Kent learns in the final frames of the last pages, new readers will learn that this was a book that was often misunderstood by many, but loved by a dedicated few. Forget the relaunched Supergirl title (first by Jeph Loeb in the pages of Superman/Batman) and check this out, you won't regret it.

        5 out of 5 stars Supergirl remembered.......2006-08-18

I loved the original Supergirl and was moved more by her sacrifice during the Crisis than Superman's death. This story gives excellent recognition to that past. I do hope someday the "new" supergirl is reunited with what she lost. Excellent story with a surprising twist at the end.

5 out of 5 stars Supergirl still rocks.......2006-08-05

I enjoyed the heck out of this whimsical story of Supergirl meeting Supergirl. It was well written and wove a charming tale of the two supergirls.

        Read it.

5 out of 5 stars WOW. A great story. .......2006-06-15

This is the last installment of the longest running Supergirl comic in history. And the cancellation is a shame. Peter David had always been very respectful of the pre-Crisis Supergirl throughout the series and tried to tie his stories to that world, updated for the new DC Universe. This takes that to the end.

Even if you have no idea what I am talking about above, the story and art in this book are so good, you should really enjoy. It's an updated throwback to comics history that bids farwell to a great series. Don't miss this.

The sad thing is that DC went on to resurrect the Kara Zor-El character in a series of disjointed stories that give her no characterization and no setting for her stories. It's a waste, especially when one sees what was done here.

            2 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-30

Novelization of the movie, and pretty short at that at 180 large print pages, so not much depth in either. The story starts ok, then they go off on the whole omegahedron/witchiepoo thing which is not so hot at all. Not sure why they come up with some witch storyline in the very first supergirl movie, after putting in a Krypton origin.

"Supergirl" is one of my most favorite films, and this book is a must-have for any collector or fan of the film. Back in the day, 1984 to be exact, the film was not as successful as expected, due to editing and rushed distribution that was unfair to the cast and crew, as well as the film itself. This book, however, contains all the moments as known from the script, even parts that were never seen until the directors cut was released, as well as other parts that may/may not have been part of the original film. The book only tells the dazzling story in novel form! A great collectible franchise!
