Cab @ The Door & Midnight Oil, Two Pleasures in One Volume.......2007-07-09
A wonderful single volume Modern Library edition of Pritchett's two volumes of memiors, Cab at the Door and Midnight Oil. Cab at the Door covers Pritchett's life from before birth to age 18. It is by turns: engaging, enlightening and laugh out loud funny. A good picture of post Victorian/Edwardian England. Pritchett's easy, self-depricating style keeps this poverty coming of age story from becoming another Mein Kampf (my struggle).
Midnight Oil is even better and was rightly called "A little Rolls Royce of a book." by Wilfred Sheed when it came out in 1972. The best and probably most realistic portrait of Paris in the 20's I've read. Very readable and important to anyone that wants to understand how a writer came to be. The pages fly by. I highly reccomend this Modern Library edition.

autodidact, out of chaos.......2001-04-19
VS Pritchett has written a splendid two-volume autobiography, which covers his childhood through his initiation as a writer. It is beautifully written and hilariously funny in places.
His early life was rather chaotic, both as a Christian Scientist and because of the ups and downs of his father's business, which meant they were frequently poor and the the children farmed out to grandparents. What is remarkable is his rise, from voracious reader to first-rate literary talent. Blocked from admission to university because he was put on a "craft" track in the leather trade, he gave it up and went abroad, the next best thing to a degree. In Paris as a semi-bohemian, he started writing, which led to jobs and a career.
His descriptions are so marvelous that I have remembered some of them for over 20 years. While a child writing for public-library event, he said he wrote the words so that they would "burn into the table" (if memory serves!); the essay was so good that the teacher thought he was really a professional writer. Nothing spectacular, but a first-rate story of coming of age.
I recommend it for any aspiring writer who wants to feel that some order might emerge from his/her chaos of early hopes. ALso for the literarati, it is the emergence of an unusual mind.

The exciting sequel to Magician.......2007-04-14
In many respects, Magician (now sold as two books) was a saga unto itself - the time span, events, war, political intrigue, and heck even the physical length of the book. Coming out with a next installment worthy of the first, must truly have been daunting for Feist.
However, with Silverthorn I think he did well. He built upon some fine, solid characters, while introducing a few more. The pace is a little more frenetic, owing to the shorter time period which the book covers. Feist, as usual, laces his work with enough to intrigue us to keep us turning the pages (and wishing to skip pages too, so we can find out what happened next).
The novel centers around Arutha, Prince of Krondor, whose wife, in a failed attempt upon his life, falls to a poisoned crossbow bolt. The cure for the toxin is from a rare flower found only in the north, in the heart of moredhel country - these are the elves of the Dark Path who hate all others with a passion. The mastermind behind the attack is a mysterious and terrifying moredhel named Murmandamus. When Pug, the sole Greater Path magician of Midkemia, learns of this creature and the powerful force, the seat of true power, behind Murmandamus, he sets out for Kelewan to seek answers. This is a bold move, considering the trouble he caused in the Tsurani empire before he fled back to his homeworld of Midkemia.
So the story unfolds on two tangents - one following Arutha in his quest to find the Silverthorn flower (and in doing so, gauging to some degree the army being assembled in the north) and Pug to uncover the truth of this new and powerful foe out to destroy his world.
Against all of this arises the possibility of the existence of the eldar, and the question of whether the powerful sorcerer Macros the Black is truly dead...
I highly recommend this book, but would urge you to read the Magician novels first to understand the events in this one a little better.
Not what you see.......2007-01-18
I purchased this for a friend who wanted a hardcover edition of Silverthorn and is very happy with it because it is hardcover. However, the cover is a plain brown textbook and does not look like the book I saw online. I did go back and check it and it does say textbook only. Check the fine print before purchasing.
NO!!!! Don't leave NOW!!!.......2006-11-14
So basically everyone reads the two MAGICIAN books and thinks "Whoa, that was a great series". But they don't even suspect that the next two books could have anything to do with books 1&2. Wrong. In fact, they have so much to do with the books that that in book 4 the real Riftwar ends. But this book sets up for book one. This, in my opinion is the worst Riftwar book. But since I loved it, how much do you think I liked the others.
So, maybe it was kind of bad the Raymond E. Feist read LotR just then; he put clichés in that unluckily were very obvious. Except that this series has sort of turned around into a romance/fantasy saga, with drama like nothing else. It starts with a scene where Laurie and Carline are arguing over when to get married!
Storyline: Prince Arutha is about to be wed to beautiful Princess (can't remember the name) when Jimmy the Hand finds an assassin on the rooftops of Krondor while stealing from a rich man. The assassin is trying to assassinate Arutha. After a catastrophic turn around (at least for the assassin), Arutha is happy to say that he's getting married that day. However, another attempt on his life misses him, and hits the Princess. It turns out that the only thing that can heal her is a flower called Silverthorn. They must journey to the north to the Dark Elf capital, Sar Sargoth to get this plant, and then ride back. Will he, Martin, Laurie, Roald (a mercenary) and Baru (a Hadati) and of course Jimmy be able to survive?
Pros:
-Great storytelling; turns and twists that you never expect.
-A lot of INTERESTING characters.
-Action by the tons. Also, if you're an LotR fan, you'll love this more than me.
Cons:
-A heavy, brutal LotR cliché.
-A mind-killing beginning that annoys you.
A Great Book.......2006-02-11
That is exactly what this book is: a great book. It's absolutely amazing. It takes the story a little while to get going, but that's only a little while, and after that it's great, active, and enjoyable.
This book shows characters in a realistic way(even if the story isn't realistic). The characters all have good points and bad points, comprehension and confusion, and everything else a real person would have.
The story line is great, adventurous, and more like that. They have to do something, but at first they don't even know what. They find out pretty soon, without any idea of how to do it, then they decide to try. I'm not going to tell you any more about this because that would ruin the suspense.
The style of writing, past tense, third person, is great. I barely like any books written differently. Still, this book shows you the person as if they were narating, even though they aren't. This writing shows everything while still writing past tense, third person.
Overall, I can't think of anything to critisize about this book. Well, it's only three hundred something pages, which isn't quite as long as I like, but other than that it didn't have anything about it that I didn't find great.
I completely and wholy recommend this book to all readers. You should probably read Magician first, but this book still makes sense without.
Feist Creates and enjoyable read.......2006-02-07
Silverthorn is the 'second' book in the Riftwar Trilogy ( I say second because it can be considered the third since Magician is broken into two books ) This book is more a segway into the third - not much happens in the way of plot for the trilogy until near the end, but when it does it does it well.
I did enjoy this book, but seriously missed Pug and Tomas through the beginning as it began in the courts of Prince Atrhur (sp.) and Jimmy the Hand, though the part that included Jimmy were great. This story really told itself very well and was quite straightforward. That is, until we ran into Pug again ( later on ).
This was a story of love and the drive to save it at all costs. The prince's fiance' has been poisoned and the cure must be found for her to be saved. The drive that pushes him on verges on the edge of sanity and he comes close to losing himself in madness, but because of the control that he can take of the situation, and his love for his madien he pushes through even seeing what is ahead.
If you enjoyed Magician or any other Feist work then pick this one up. The story is a bit bland and done over, but it is enjoyable nonetheless.. ;)
Book Description
Training Trances is about how to therapeutically communicate with the unconscious mind. The authors present their own unique integration of Ericksonian techniques, traditional models of hypnotherapy, and recent research in related areas. Numerous new patterns modeled from the work of Milton H. Erickson, M.D. are clearly explained and demonstrated. The use of trance in training design, to unconsciously install the skills being taught to the participants, is also covered.
The book developed from transcripts of a four day workshop, and the design of the book parallels the design chosen for the training itself. Individual exercises or those done in groups of two or three are offered so that the reader may practice the techniques and learn the skills.
There are numerous "live" demonstrations, inductions, and double inductions which create for the reader a real "feel" of how hypnosis is done and which are also a rich source for linguistic analysis for the advanced reader.
Written with insight and humor, this book's most unique twist is its use of multi-level communication and hypnotic language to create a "training trance" for the readers as they journey through the text. Some hypnotic references are obvious and explicit -- those which are not obvious will create enjoyable "ah-ha!" experiences for the reader as they are discovered.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Trancy work.......2007-05-30
I drifted off too far a few times...usually towards the end of induction scripts.
This works really well, and is a must have for anyone into indirect hypnosis. If you just want to play a little, it's great to read for it's own sake, though I warn you, you'll probably go further :-)
For the practicing hypnotherapist, this is a great demonstration/experience book and of course would be nicely complemented by both Heller's Monsters and Magical Sticks book, Ericksonian Approaches and perhaps for contrast Elmans' work. I like having this book with me along with Ledochowski's Deep Trance Training manual...and yes it IS a manual, literally.
Highly enjoyable, I hope I get to train with the authors in the future.
Great Book...if you can read it.......2007-05-02
This is not your average book. The way its written is designed to reach subconscious levels. It's alive, you might say. But it takes some serious concentration to read it, as the way its worded is unusual and somehow disturbing, but perhaps in a good way. I don't think the average Joe would like this book, but most people taking a close look at this book probably aren't average Joes.
Excellent!.......2007-03-21
As an NLP Practicioner I can say that it is an excellent source of knowledge. It is an outstanding tool.
junk if you want a manual on how to do it.........2006-12-15
I know lets write book that dances around the subject and wastes peoples time. If I were to write book that does that, I couldn't name it training trances, because that title is already taken.
Very Valuable for a practicing hypnotherapist.......2006-08-01
I loved this book. I learned things I never learned in 30 years of doing hypnotherapy. A must have for anyone working with altered states,

Excellent Dollhouse & Advertising Book.......2007-03-09
As a member of a Dollhouse and Miniatures Club, this book on the advertising of early dollhouses, I find this book a MUST BUY for all collectors and other people seeking info on dollhouses and the styles that were out there for the public to buy. Again, as a collector, it is essential to have a book like this to use as a "guide", especially when so many houses and furniture of these periods are unknown and this also gives a glimpse into how these products were advertised to entise the public, especially children to buy these products. This book is yet another fantastic book by Dian Zillner to further eductate us in the past and present Dollhouse and Furniture collectables.
My Mom loves this book!.......2007-02-11
I purchased this book for my Mom for Christmas and she was in heaven!

I didn't want to wait the 2-3 weeks to receive this, so I purchased it from one of the secondary sellers listed in the Amazon ad page and got a wonderful NEW book for under $20.00! Paging thru this fun nostalgic book is just like Christmas morning for any baby boomer who was a little girl waiting for Santa in the 1940's thru 1960's.....also has some 1970's dollhouses and furniture. What a wonderful find! You will love it!

Clear, concise, well-written.......2002-01-24
Julie and John's book is a very well written, clear, practical guide for understanding the interplay between the conscious, unconscious and higher conscious minds and the value of interpreting and participating in dream life. Their description of the role of the three minds play in helping one achieve wholeness is outstanding. The dream interpretation section in Chapter 5 is the easiest to understand and most practical application I have come across. Furthermore, the book is full of practical instructions on how to incubate and participate in your dreams for the purpose of achieving wholeness and improving ones life. If you are a serious student of dream therapy you will want this easy to read book in your library. Loretta M. Siani, Ph.D. Clinical Hypnotherapist.
