Book Description

Cold and alone in an ancient Palestinian village, a travelling archeologist finds the threads of a narrative that will direct his life for the coming decade. Its characters are a Palestinian woman, an English man, each deeply committed to the conflicting demands of love and national loyalties. As the narrator slowly pieces together the fate of the two unfortunate lovers, he also uncovers a tale of treachery, duplicity, and passion that highlights the contemporary plight of the enormous numbers of displaced Palestinians. Their final resolution surprises them both and reveals a depth to their commmitments that neither had previously realized.

It was a great book until I had to begin filling in the story line by myself! 25 pages were missing from the book, even though I paid full price for it..very disappointing to begin the story only to find that there are blank pages.

5 out of 5 stars A metaphor for Palestine.......2006-04-15

This is a book of love and loss, of what is and what might have been. An archaeologist finds a personal journal in the closet of a small hotel in Jordan that describes the love affair between a Palestinian woman and an English man. Through the journal entries, the archaeologist tries to piece together their life. His curiosity leads to further inquiries in which he ultimately learns of the complex relationship and tragic destiny of the two lovers. Throughout the narrative, the suffering of the Palestinian people weighs heavily overhead. This is an outstanding book that is, at one level, a tragic love story between two people from different worlds. At another level, however, this narrative describes, in personal and intimate terms, what the Nakba did to the collective psyche of generations of Palestinians. This is a moving and beautiful novel, and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Taking a stand for freedom.......2003-12-09

A Beggar at Damascus Gate is a compilation of journal entries between a Palestinian woman and her British husband. The fact that they are husband and wife is problematic because of the colonization of Palestine by England. We are privy to these writings through the eyes of an archeologist who uncovers them in his hotel room in Petra. He is at first hesitant about reading them because he realizes that the correspondence is a look into the hearts and souls of two people who cannot prevent his intrusion. He overcomes this reluctance and decides to read the journals first because of his curiosity and finally because he wants to publish them.
The journals track the lives of the couple over many years and are filled with their private thoughts, implications of murder, conspiracy, spying, and revolutionary activities. Since the archeologist decided what entries to publish, it was hard for me to establish a connection with the couple. It was also evident that the archeologist was fascinated by Ryya, the wife, which at first created a bias for me against her husband. The archeologist also tries to mold Ryya into the traditional role of a woman, but he realizes that she does not fit this mold and is forced to give the reader a picture of the true woman.
There is nothing traditional about the lives of the couple and they spend more time apart than together. They travel together and separately throughout their time together and the mission that each is committed to performing is suspected by the other, even though they have no concrete evidence of this fact.
To view this novel as merely a love story is to miss the underlying symbolism of the fight for freedom and against oppression by one country over another. Ryya has one true love left in her life, and that is her homeland of Palestine. It was a place of peacefulness, sacredness, and happiness that she is no longer able to enjoy because of her revolutionary stance against the occupation of Palestine by Israel. Alex doesn't understand her feelings about her version of what her homeland is and means to her. His annoyance comes from the fact that he cannot empathize with her because he has never been on the receiving end of oppression.
The archeologist spends ten years of his life searching for the couple and comes to believe that he will never find them. The significance of the title is revealed at the end of the novel. This novel was well worth the time because it is also a mystery. We have to put the clues together to realize the full impact of the novel.

4 out of 5 stars Unanswerable questions.......2003-12-08

I really enjoyed Yasmin Zahran's novel, A Beggar at Damascus Gate. I had trouble, however, in categorizing it. One could call it a mystery novel, a romance novel, a spy novel, or a historical piece, and be right on each account. It effectively combined all of those elements to create an intriguing, tense, and sobering portrait of a love affair that wasn't what it appeared to be. In fact, little is really as it appears in this novel. Zahran's characters live in a world of duplicity and betrayal.
The story takes shape in Petra, Jordan. A man named Foster, is holed up in an empty inn during the off season. Bored and cold, he stumbles upon a dusty canvas bag hidden in a closet. The bag contains letters, journals, and poetry that belonged to two lovers. Foster is fascinated by the papers and takes them. As he pores over the papers, he learns that the two lovers are named Rayya and Alex. Rayya is a Palestinian poet, beautiful and extroverted. Alex is a quiet Englishman, pale and sickly. I found them to be an odd couple that love brought together.
As Foster digs deeper into their lives, we see a relationship that goes from playful ribbing about each other's heritage to suspicion and accusations. We know Rayya is dedicated to the cause of Palestine. But how does Alex really feel? And is he really the man he portrays?
I found myself stepping into Foster's shoes. I wanted to know where these two lovers were. Were they still together? Were they still alive? I looked for clues in the story as well as in the journal entries of both characters. I got the impression that as the lovers learned more about each other, they became embroiled in something that was far bigger than both of them.
As Foster tracks the whereabouts of Alex and Rayya, he too realizes that there are much bigger forces at work. Walking down the wrong alley or asking the wrong question can awaken unseen dangers. The author effectively raises the tension level as comes to a seeming dead end. And when he finally does learn the `truth' about Alex and Rayya, it is anticlimactic, as life often is. The author avoids the usual clichés. Good doesn't always triumph over evil. The hero doesn't always get the girl in the end. No, I found that Zahran uses a more realistic approach. Life is an ongoing struggle with no absolute winners or losers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading.......2003-08-09

Having received my copy of this novel as a free promotional copy, I did not expect much in terms of quality. I was therefore pleasantly surprised when I began reading this intriguing novel, and could not put it down until I finished it in a single night! This is spy/love story, enclosed in the historical setting of Palestine in the immediate aftermath of the 1967 war. A beautifully poetic text weaves what turns out to be a highly suspenseful and symbolic novel. Even for people like me who thought they "knew it all" about Palestine, this novel brings with it fresh perspectives that deserve an ear. I was terribly sad when this novel was over. It evoked a lot of memories.

If you like this book you would definitely enjoy "Memory of the Flesh," by Ahlam Mustaghanmi.

In his earlier novels, Robert Stone has taken us to such hot spots as Vietnam, Central America, and that ultimate sinkhole of depravity we call Hollywood. This time around, it's Jerusalem. Given Stone's gift for depicting both political and personal embroilment--indeed, for making the two inextricable--this particular city is an inspired choice. For starters, Jerusalem remains a sacred destination for Muslims, Jews, and Christians and a hotly contested one. It's also a magnet for hustlers, fanatics, and millennial dreamers, a generous assortment of whom populate the pages of Damascus Gate. As always, Stone introduces a (relatively) innocent American into the picture--a journalist named Christopher Lucas. This career skeptic prides himself on his detachment: he prefers the kind of story "that exposed depravity and duplicity on both sides of supposedly uncompromising sacred struggles. He found such stories reassuring, an affirmation of the universal human spirit." Yet Lucas, a lapsed Catholic, has journeyed to Jerusalem at least in part to recharge his devotional batteries. And as he's slowly drawn into a terrorist plot--which involves drugs, arms smuggling, and a plan to blow up the Temple Mount--Lucas sheds his detachment in a hurry. Stone's novel functions as an expert thriller, whose slow, somewhat clunky wind-up is more than compensated for by a brilliant grand finale. It is also, however, a dogged exploration of faith, in which cynics and true believers jostle for predominance. "Life was so self-conscious in Jerusalem," the author reflects, "so lived at close quarters, by competing moralizers. Every little blessing demanded immediate record." It's hard to imagine a more vivid record of these mutual blessings--and maledictions!--than Robert Stone's.

Book Description

On the cusp of the millennium, Jerusalem has become a battleground in the race for redemption. American journalist Christopher Lucas is investigating religious fanatics when he discovers a plot to bomb the sacred Temple Mount. A violent confrontation in the Gaza Strip, a race through riot-filled streets, a cat-and-mouse game in an underground maze -- as Lucas follows his leads, he uncovers an attempt to seize political advantage that reveals duplicity and depravity on all sides of Jerusalem's sacred struggle.

Ambitious, passionate, darkly comic, Damascus Gate is not only Robert Stone's biggest and best novel to date, but a timely and brilliant story of belief, power, salvation, and apocalypse.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars From page 50 to the end.......2007-01-12

The references are indeed tedious at first, but the novel picks up speed toward the middle, and for me, became compelling. The story is ultimately about believers, non-believers, and seekers. We see characters whose faith (or lack thereof) make them gulible and fanatical or manipulative and self-interested, but Stone never makes us feel that one group is any better than the other. Instead he shows us the fallibility of them all. If life is like a children's story, Robert Stone shows us the "Alice in Wonderland" logic of each perspective - all without scorning the seeker's longing for something more. I'm glad I kept reading.

1 out of 5 stars Overly detailed and boring.......2006-06-29

With all the great reviews, I thought this would be good, especially as I really enjoyed Children of Light. Instead, the first chapter is one of the most boring I have ever read. I tried it a second time, thinking I missed something. I didn't. I thought it would get better. It didn't. This is one of the most arduous and tedious books I've read, with excessive and boring detail about everything. Unlike many other readers, I stop reading at a certain point if a book doesn't interest me. I stopped at page 50. Others who have reviewed this actually finished it, and then say it was really bad. This book is a good reason to stop at 50.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2006-06-26

Took a bit of work getting past what initially seemed like cliche on journalists in hot spots, travellers, NGO scenes, mysticisms, etc., but turned into an engaging reading once I started to empathize with the characters.

Thought there was a scene early where it hinted that DeKuf was in control, rather than Razi, but maybe I misread?

There were few dopey parts where the author tries to lay heavy with mysticism. Didn't particularly work for me, but then I scanned through them quickly, and don't feel I missed out much.

I'm not much of a fiction reader, but I enjoyed this one.

3 out of 5 stars dribbling bits of irrelevancy.......2006-04-07

i was compelled to finish this pile of words simply because the man signed my copy at a book fair. i've never been to israel but Stone's depiction seemed fanciful. it read awkwardly at times and i think his efforts to paint the city as diverse were much too pretentious. it's like he threw darts at an atlas and decided that a character would be from the landing of that dart. nevertheless i respect his thorough research and apparant command of colloquialistic theology. borderline narrative at best.

4 out of 5 stars Intelligent treatment of a difficult problem.......2005-02-17

If you are looking for a thrill-a-minute page-turner, this book is not for you. If, however, you are more interested in depth than in flash, I recommend Damascus Gate. In a nutshell: Damascus Gate gave me a better understanding of the Israeli/Palestinian situation than any number of non-fiction pieces I've read.

Book Description

The unforgettable experiences of a young Australian journalist posted in Israel to report on the conflict in the occupied territories are documented in this compelling memoir. Unafraid, or perhaps just stunningly naïve, Jamie Tarabay, an Arabic-speaking Australian of Lebanese descent, dove headfirst into the thick of Middle Eastern politics. From the great optimism following the Camp David summit in 2000 to the start of the intifada in 2001, Jamie was in the thick of it—Nablus, Ramallah, Hebron, suicide bombers, hard-line Jewish settlers, Palestinians living under curfew, and the arrival of the new millennium after a Christmas in Bethlehem. This entertaining, unique, and highly illuminating memoir chronicles a transitional period in the Middle East and traces the author's experiences as she redefines her sense of nationality, morality, heritage, and religion.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Riveting.......2007-02-17

This is an amazing read. Jamie Tarabay brings home what it's like to live in a war zone in a way few other reporters have in recent memory. The combination of personal details and experiences, along with touching and poignant descriptions of the tragedy of war make this book unique in its class.

Refreshingly, the reporting is unbiased and fair, unlike most of the mass media reporting we all see on TV every night. Rather than focusing on good guys and bad guys, Jamie shows us that all sides in the Middle East conflict are made up of people who are very similar in so many ways, who all have fear, and anger, and who all bleed alike and die alike.

After reading this book, not only will you have come to know and understand the crisis in the Middle East much more completely, but you will also have come to know and understand the working of a young, innocent and apparently fearless reporter putting her life on the line every day for the sake of the assignment. It's easy to become a big fan of this author very quickly, and one can only hope that she will follow up this work with a similar one based on her recent reporting from Iraq. Pulitzer-worthy.

4 out of 5 stars The story of a brave war correspondent.......2007-01-10

Ever wonder what type of person, let alone a woman, wants to live in a war-torn area like Iraq so we can hear on the radio what's going on there? Jamie Tarabay epitomizes an incredibly brave group of people crucial to an open society like ours - reporters who put their lives at risk to inform us about the real conditions and people caught up in such grim circumstances. Jamie's clear-eyed descriptions of her real-time education in the complexities of the Middle East and the intractable Palestine-Israel conflict give the reader a more balanced appreciation of the underlying human and religious issues. I was hoping to learn more about what motivates sophisticated women (and men) reporters like Jamie and Christiane Amanpour to do this type of work. Jamie's book title promises to do this, but ultimately spends more time analyzing the other type of occupation involved. I'm very relieved to hear Jamie reporting for NPR from Baghdad in the New Year - I can continue to root for and care about her now that I know better who she is. Thank you and well done, Jamie!

5 out of 5 stars Exciting and riveting reading - couldn't put this one down!.......2006-03-08

Jamie Tarabay tells it as it is without the blandness commonly associated with autobiographies. You relive her experiences with her vivid descriptions of events and her desire to provide an objective an assessment as possible of the troubles around her. She takes you through the highs and lows of life as a reporter in a region many of us never understand. I learnt so much more about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict after reading this book. She explains it in a way that's uncomplicated and makes sense. And her adventures sound like fun, even if ducking bullets by hiding behind a car or hitching a ride with militia is a bit crazy. It's a very good read and I strongly recommend it.

In The Gates of Damascus author Lieve Joris presents an intimate portrait of modern Syria. Joris went to Syria in the wake of the Gulf War and stayed with a Syrian woman, Hala, whom she'd met many years before at a conference in Baghdad. When she arrives in Damascus, she discovers that Hala's husband was taken by the secret police 11 years earlier and has still not returned. Sharing a tiny apartment with Hala and her daughter, Asma, Joris is introduced to the hidden world that modern Syrians occupy--a world of family and the day-to-day challenges of living with fear of betrayal--even by one's closest friends and relatives. And over all is the current situation in the Middle East. As Joris comes to know Hala's friends and family, the chasm between her own European assumptions and the reality of life in Damascus widens, bringing with it potential danger for her friend.

The Gates of Damascus reads like a thriller at times as the subtle paranoia that defines Syria begins to infect Joris as well. Mostly, however, it is a penetrating, compassionate portrait of contemporary Arab society, and a rational sounding board for the many political and cultural viewpoints contained therein.

Book Description

The Gates of Damascus is a beautifully drawn portrait of daily life in modern-day Syria. Through her intimate contact with Hala, a Damascene, Lieve Joris experiences the routines and celebrations of domestic life in the Middle East. She also witnesses the impact of Syrian politics on the lives of ordinary people. A travel writing classic, Lieve Joris's book offers a unique insight into the complexities of the Arab world.

'She has expanded the boundaries of travel writing.'

5 out of 5 stars So sensitive.......2006-11-08

This author is so sensitive towards her subjects. I really love this writer. She tackles difficult questions and situations. This is an inside story where Joris looks at situations (Syrian 'common' life) from her own perspective and she tries to do this from the country's/peoples perspective. Joris also examines herself along this perspective. Like a real journalist on one hand and like a real novelist on the other hand, in my opinion.

1 out of 5 stars Ok, but does it represent everything ?.......2001-11-16

I haven't read the book, but I am a Damascene. If the author had lived in Damascus for few years and if one of the reviewers had lived there for 3, I am a person who lived there for 22 years. I do not think that life there is full of threats and betrayal. I am a christian and I never encountered a problem there. Damascus is a beautiful city and I carry it in my heart wherever I go.
Next time when someone wants to write about a certain city or population, make sure they represent everyone and not just concentrate on what serves their point of view best, hence the 1 star for this book.

4 out of 5 stars Feel the weight of history..........2000-01-11

I am very interested in the material that Ms. Joris covers in her book. The most lasting impression however is how well she portrays the psychological weight of being a woman in the middle east. I sort of felt like I had spent 4 months in Syria after reading it. It rings true -- based on my travel experiences and lives of friends.

If you liked this (or are interested in Middle Eastern women's issues) you'll probably like Nine Parts of Desire, The Price of Honor, and Memoirs from the Women's Prison (Saadawi). Generally more academic, Fatima Mernissi is a good writer.

5 out of 5 stars A very familiar story.......1999-02-28

For three years I've lived in Damascus, during the Gulf War. I've read "lonely planet gates of Damascus" in it's original state, in Dutch. Everything seemed so familiar to me it could have been my own diary. I really adore this book and I'd like to recommand this book to everyone who will be living in an Arabic country, because it will give you a realistic view of the present situation in an Arabic society. Please bear in mind that Syria is not the slightest like, for instance, Saoedi-Arabia. Others who have been living in Syria might find it fascinating to know how the life in the Syrian getto actually is. You will find the conversations and communication problems very familiar! Further I'd like to read more books like these; so if anyone can help me, please mail...

5 out of 5 stars an ultimate window to happenings in the current world.......1997-07-24

Every book from Lieve Joris is an ultimate window in certain affairs of the current world, such as Hungaria, Zaire (yet known as the Republic of Congo), Mali, The Gulf States, Syria, Egypt etc. The words the writer chooses are dedicated to their subject. And Lieve Joris knows she is a subject too. This book about Damascus tells us about the innerlife of the innercity of Damascus. It is a story about the women in Damascus, the men, the politics, real life, the dreams of the past and the no-hopes of the future. This is how I see it. If you like newspapers and human interest in a journalistic way: try this book! (And all of her others aswell)

"Elana Greenfield and the English language use each other beautifully. She makes little plays, stories long and short. The short ones, on another day, might have been poems. She is a lovely, lively writer."-Grace Paley

This new collection of dramatic short tales is a remarkable first work by dramatist Elana Greenfield. In these stories, the author peers into the supernatural with passion, humor, irony and a remarkable matter-of-fact voice. In "Possessed by a Demon," the devil reveals himself through two women who are both the narrators and the central characters. In "Talent," Greenfield tells the story of a woman trying to transcend the elusiveness of love. And in "The Premonitions," she lyrically predicts the life of Jesus. Together these pieces work toward self-discovery and awareness, while relinquishing the need to explain the inexplicable.

Elana Greenfield lives in New York City.

"A mesmerizing story of blackmail, romance, and deception."
              ASSOCIATED PRESS
Drusilla Delaney, the daughter of an impoverished minister, becomes fascinated with the wealthy Framling family--especially with the son and daughter, the mysterious Fabian, and the beautiful, impetuous Lavinia. Through them, she finds herself the unlikely heir to an extraordinary bejeweled fan made of peacock feathers. But though priceless and dazzling to behold, the fan bears a curse that promises ill fortune--and even death--to whoever possesses it....
              "Enthralling."

              5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-06-29

I rank The India Fan as one of Victoria Holt's best. Drusilla is an excellent narrator and as in Holt's best, the romance doesn't blindside you out of nowhere, nor does the "hea" seem incongruous because we're shown Fabian's growth and love for her through their interactions. And as is apparent in most of Holt's novels, The India Fan doesn't stint on the lush, vivid descriptions of Indian life and the massacre at Lucknow.

              5 out of 5 stars My Second V.H book!.......2005-06-17

This is my second Victoria Holt book and it is so beautiful. Although I don't get why saves Lavinia so many times , although she does get rewarded. It's a good thing that Lavinia dies anyway. She defineitly deservered that. But this is a pretty story but not as 'The Silk Vendetta', which is a 10 times better than this . But still it is addicting. I recommend this to anybody who likes romance and mystery . But this one has more mystery and doesn't really tell about the Indian culture that well.

              5 out of 5 stars ** Highly Recommended **.......2004-09-18

The central character of the book is Drusilla Delany. From her childhood Drusilla's life had been dominated by the Framling's - Lady Harriet, her son Fabian and her daughter Lavinia.

As a child Drusilla had played with Lavinia, and later they are sent away together to a finishing school in France. There Lavinia's wild and wayward behaviour leads them both into trouble.

After marrying, Lavinia leaves England for India, and later Drusilla accepts an opportunity to join her there as governess to Lavinia's children.

Arriving in Bombay Drusilla finds that Lavinia has not learned from her previous disasters.

The story moves between England, France and India and covers the period of the Indian Mutiny against the British in the mid 19th century. It is written mainly in the 1st person.

I didn't think this story would interest me, but I was enjoyably surprised; I think because the story is so well written.

Victoria Holt was one of the pseudonyms of Eleanor Alice Burford. After marrying she became Eleanor Alice Hibbert. Others she wrote under included Jean Plaidy, Ellalice Tate, Kathleen Kellow, Elbur Ford, Philippa Carr. She wrote almost 200 books under these names!

              Her books are VERY addictive!

Sadly, most of her books are out of print at the date of this review. Some can be purchased on the Internet or from second-hand bookshops.

              5 out of 5 stars I luved the book!.......2002-07-09

This book is AMAZING! Ms. Holt did a wonderful job decribing Drusilla's feelings and the setting in which the book takes place. It's about a vicar's daughter who gets forced into becoming friends with selfish Lavinia Framling and helps her out in many ways ( like helping Lavinia through her pregnency of an ilegimate daughter ). Drusilla is faced with many problems throughout the book. One problem, deciding if she loves Fabian Framlimg ( Lavina's older brother ) who has admitted his feelings for her! This is a book that you will only find once in a life time. If you like Victoria Holt and romantic suspense and mystery than this book is for you! I will read this book probably 100 times and NEVER get sick of it! Yes, that's how good it is! READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars SOME INCORRECT INFORMATION OTHERWISE ENJOYABLE.......2001-07-07

I ENJOY HISTORICAL NOVELS AS A RULE THAT IS THE REASON I READ IT. I FOUND SOME INFORMATION ABOUT INDIA & INDIAN CUSTOMS INCORRECT-ROSHANARA & ASRAF ARE MUSLIMS AS THEIR NAMES INDICATE-ASRAF's FATHER GREAT KHANSAMAH WOULD BE A MUSLIM ALSO-UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES HE WOULD BURN HIS SON's BODY ON A PYRE AS MUSLIM'S BURY THEIR DEAD-THEREFORE ROSHANARA CANNOT BE A SUTEE. THIS HORRIBLE CUSTOM WAS ONLY PERFORMED BY HIGH CASTE BRAHMINS & RULING CLASS HINDUS. I HOPE THIS REVIEW IS PASSED ON TO THE WRITER SO SHE DOES NOT MISINFORM HER READERS WHO DO NOT KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT INDIA & OTHER COUNTRIES & THEIR CUSTOMS.

                  Book Description

From crumbling shops in Chinatown to decaying tanneries in Tangra, Kwai-yun Li's collection of linked short stories expose us to the life of a marginalized community in postcolonial Calcutta.

We meander into Wong's Shoe Shop, where a mother arranges a marriage for her six-year-old daughter. We stop at a school for girls, where the principal singles out students who have large breasts for punishment. We pause by a temple guarded by a billy goat where family drama rages. We rally with politicians while the monsoon rain drenches us. We relax under waving palms while the setting sun shimmers over the surface of the Tangra fish ponds.

Kwai-yun Li's sensitivity and quirky sense of humour will keep us wanting to return to the ghetto again and again.

                      Book Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on air conditioning machines having a motor-driven fan and elements for changing the temperature and humidity and their parts in India face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying air conditioning machines having a motor-driven fan and elements for changing the temperature and humidity and their parts to India? How important is India compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of air conditioning machines having a motor-driven fan and elements for changing the temperature and humidity and their parts vary from one country of origin to another in India? On the supply side, India also exports air conditioning machines having a motor-driven fan and elements for changing the temperature and humidity and their parts. Which countries receive the most exports from India? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for air conditioning machines having a motor-driven fan and elements for changing the temperature and humidity and their parts in India. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for air conditioning machines having a motor-driven fan and elements for changing the temperature and humidity and their parts for those countries serving India via exports, or supplying from India via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where India fits into the world market for imported and exported air conditioning machines having a motor-driven fan and elements for changing the temperature and humidity and their parts. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for India in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that India is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize India compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

                                Book Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on table, floor, wall, window, ceiling or roof fans with self-contained electric motor of an output not exceeding 125 w in India face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying table, floor, wall, window, ceiling or roof fans with self-contained electric motor of an output not exceeding 125 w to India? How important is India compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of table, floor, wall, window, ceiling or roof fans with self-contained electric motor of an output not exceeding 125 w vary from one country of origin to another in India? On the supply side, India also exports table, floor, wall, window, ceiling or roof fans with self-contained electric motor of an output not exceeding 125 w. Which countries receive the most exports from India? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for table, floor, wall, window, ceiling or roof fans with self-contained electric motor of an output not exceeding 125 w in India. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for table, floor, wall, window, ceiling or roof fans with self-contained electric motor of an output not exceeding 125 w for those countries serving India via exports, or supplying from India via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where India fits into the world market for imported and exported table, floor, wall, window, ceiling or roof fans with self-contained electric motor of an output not exceeding 125 w.
