Book Description

As Zabelle's family assembles for her funeral in present-day Massachusetts, it becomes clear that her children hardly knew her. But as this alternatively comic and heartbreaking novel unfolds--beginning with Zabelle's survival of the 1915 Armenian Genocide in Turkey and her subsequent emigration to America for an arranged marriage--an unforgettable character emerges.

5 out of 5 stars great read.......2007-02-02

I loved this book,i could not put it down. It's very convinceing and very funny.

2 out of 5 stars sleeping pill.......2007-01-11

to me this book was so boring it literally put me to sleep many times and at the end i stopped reading it.

2 out of 5 stars Maybe I am just a bit of a cynic.......2006-07-31

Maybe I am just a bit of a cynic, or maybe books like "Middlesex" have spoiled me, but I could not get into this book for either its literary style, or its historical deatails (or lack thereof).

First of all, and most irritatingly, the book is told through a first person perspective which is particularily grating as well as illogical since the book begins with the narrator's death. There is no sense of a families' discovery of the past, and no true sense of linkage between the past and present because of this. Also, first person limited terms (I and Me) are used excesively, and this reduces the poetic euphony of the text which other reviewers so praised.

Don't expect much historically either. You will not understand the Turkish motivation for the Armenian Crisis, or get a broader scope of history here. Everything is contained within the limited perspective of the narrator (relating back to the primary afforementioned weakness). Some might see this as storytelling; however, historical narrative is always more interesting or engaging when given a broad sweep of the life and times.

Two stars are awarded for the solid storyline, but with the two major weaknesses adressed above, I can not truly recommend this book to either fans of narrative fiction, or fans of history

3 out of 5 stars Literary Yes!, Historically No!.......2006-06-29

Well, reading Zabelle was rather a coincidence, a very odd one. Knowing that "fiction" was just fictional, I read the book in an instant loving its poetic rhythym. However, as a person, who has studied history of the Ottoman Empire and Armenian issue strictly, I couldn't take myself away from noticing the one-sided tone, and many inaccuracies that I encountered through the pages. When writing such a book, one should also care for the memories of the elders, who went through the unfortunate events in the past; however, though a fictional book, one should again remember that Armenians and Turks lived TOGETHER for centuries in peace, as friends. That is why I suggest this book for its literary value; however, it cannot be shown as an example of a past that is too hard to made into a fictional novella, AND too detrimental/sorrowful to be advertised as the story of thousands.

5 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable read.......2002-10-15

This is a wonderful book - easy, quick to read and keeps one's interest all the way through. I was so enthralled with this book that I immediately started looking for other books written by Kricorian. She is a fantastic writer.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely amazing eye-opening look at a forgotten chapter of american history.......2006-04-08

This collection is brilliantly put together, with very informative introductions by the editor that explain each story's historical and personal context. The stories themselves are pure women's voices from different eras of american history and incredibly valuable. they're also just great reads... one woman taken captive as a teenager becomes an active member of her new native american community and tells the fascinating story of her life in an interview at the age of 80. I'd say based on the other customer review, that its not for kids(!) who are going to be thrown off by the early american grammer, but for people seriously interested in womens role in early america and for an unfiltered look at a contemporary white settler perspective on white and native american relationships in the 17th and 18th centuries.

3 out of 5 stars Only BUY if you like Indian Narratives.......2003-09-01

This isn't actually a book you would want to read if you were not required to. These stories are interesting but not a book for a rainy day. Purchase this book only if you are interested in Indian narratives. I had a miserable time reading this- then again it could have been because the book was assigned. The grammar in some of the stories are hard to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Another JAK Winner!.......2006-03-28

If you're looking for a book that is filled with smart wit and keen observations, "The Golden Chance" is it. Philadelphia Fox is the trademark JAK heroine, a quirky do-gooder a step shy of being beautiful.

Philadelphia is a burnt-out social worker, traumatized from her last case which involved an ex-mercenary and his wife taking in foster children for profit. Nick Lightfoot, the ex-heir apparent to C & L, a profitable arms manufacturing corporation, and Philadelphia meet on shaky grounds. Nick has been sent by the C & L clan to retrieve C & L shares that Philadelphia inherited from her best friend Crissie Masters. Philadelphia, however, is unlike most women Nick has met. Her shares can't be bought. Philadelphia can't be bought either for that matter. Thus begins a matter of the heart.

Philadelphia accompanies Nick to the quaint fictional town of Port Claxton, Washington, home of the C & L clan. She wants answers to Crissie's untimely death. She also wants to find out more about the tortured C & L clan. Members of the clan are so very close and yet so very distant from each other. Appearances are everything, leaving no room for authentic conversation.

Nick and Philadelphia ("Phila") are an unlikely couple. But that is often the case in romance novels. Nick is a savvy businessman from a conservative family while Philadelphia is a leftish bleeding-heart liberal do-gooder (yes, perhaps redundant!). However, in matters of the heart, it is often compassion, passion, loyalty and sexual attraction that overcome these vast differences. Like so many JAK heroines, Philadelphia eventually endears herself to those around her. Overall, "The Golden Chance" is a wonderful, heart-warming read. I highly recommend!

                  2 out of 5 stars Yikes.......2002-02-10

I completely agree with the reviewers who rated this book a two or below. Philadelphia Fox is one of the most ridiculous heroins I have ever come across. Annoying and unlikeable. Nicodemus Lightfoot, on the other hand, was the only redeeming factor in this book. He was a true Jayne Krentz character, a take charge kind of person. Unlike Philadelphia, he was not so indecisive.
Oh, I almost forgot to comment on the "relationship" between the hero and heroin. I saw very little closeness between Phila and Nick, other than in the bedroom. I can't understand how anyone could mistake that for tenderness.
This book is definitely one I would recomend you DON'T read. If you want a good book check out some of Krentz's others. Deep Waters, for example.

5 out of 5 stars Another Triumph for JAK.......2001-02-05

If you want angst go else where. But if you want well drawn characters, with witty repartee and sexy irresistible males, then JAK is your cup of tea. Her name on a book means a great time. From her silly names, to quirky characters there is no one like her. You don't read her books, you experience them!!

Philadelphia Fox inherited a mess when her foster sister Crissie Master died and left her shares in a business Castleton & Lightfoot. Run by two families for generations, they did not see the illegitimate daughter of Boyd Castleton as "family". When he died, he finally did right the daughter he never knew leaving her shares in the business. But then, mysteriously Cassie dies in a car accident. Phila does not believe it was an accident, but no one doubts the word of the Castles or the Lightfoots, so the death goes down to an accident and the two families would have dismissed the pushing outsider, had Boyd not left her a big chunk of their business.

Nick Lightfoot was CEO of the business till three years before when a nasty family situation saw him walk away, leaving his father marry his fiancé to save her reputation. And Nick, now an outcast from the family he knows and loves and from the business he should be heading, is out to change things. And he plans on using Phila's control of the stock to make those changes. He finds Phila's plans on using the shares to, if not revenge her foster sister, see justice done for her, so he scoops up the advantage of seeming to align with her.

Phila knows Nick is using her, once a Lightfoot always a Lightfoot, but he gives her an in to the tightly knit stronghold of the Boyds and Lightfoots. She is very attracted to Nick and he to her, but they both have agendas mapped out. Both are aware the other is letting themselves be used and using the other, but that does not stop the attraction. But can romance bloom in the middle of a nasty corporate take over, and will Nick stand by Phila or close ranks with the family when push comes to shove?

It's another Jayne Ann cat & mouse game with well drawn characters, snappy writing and two leaders and are engaging.

A super way to spend a rainy afternoon!!

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks!.......2000-10-05

This was one of the best books I've ever read! The characters seemed like real people and not just characters. I've read other books by Jayne Ann Krentz, and I enjoyed all of them, but this one was the best by far.

5 out of 5 stars Among the very best of contemporary romances.......2000-02-01

This is, as far as I'm concerned, one of the best contemporary romances ever written. The heroine isn't a flake like most of Krentz's heroines, but is smart and very feisty. The hero, Nick, is what's special, though: Instead of her usual man of mystery or engineer with frozen emotions, Krentz has created a vibrant hero who's loving, humorous, and strong but not pushy; he's a masterpiece, and the tenderness of the relationship between him and the heroine, Philadelphia, is deeply moving. Among my all-time favorites.

"Diablo...No!" Sunshine screamed horribly and went after Diablo with her teeth. The black horse, who hadn't reckoned on this attack, whinnied back furiously. Threateningly, he reared up on his hind legs and struck out at the pregnant mare. Sunshine saw the kicking hooves in front of her, but because of her condition and her exhaustion, she wasn't able to get far enough away, and Diablo hit her on the croup painfully before he set down on the ground again. Sunshine bent down under Diablo's weight and sank to the ground. "Imagine you find your dream horse. He's everything you ever wanted. Now imagine he turns into somebody else's nightmare..."Ricki and her friends think a long weekend at a fabulous horse estate is going to be the trip of their lives. They're right, of course, just not at all in a way any of them expects.

                            Book Description

In Susan's own words, we are taken from the early years in Great Britain, briefly through World War II, and over the ocean to the vast land known as Canada. During the fifties in suburbia, and the proceeding times into the present, you will be offered insights into life, both tragic and uplifting. With its many twists and turns, her life can be envisioned with a lot of the “what ifs?” that we all experience. The thread of Paul's life experience is more dire and depressing. We track his survival to adulthood as just one of many siblings, to being labeled as “different” and never gaining the respect he desperately wanted from his family. The ultimate price paid in both unstable work environments and personal relationships finally results in his present life work—the search for enlightenment. At the latter part of the book, they meet each other, recognize the souls within, and prove once again, the power of two negative lives making one positive connection. There is no ending, of course, as their lives still continue.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful American Frontier Historical - Original.......2004-07-11

Setting - Virginia and Wyoming 1869 --- Reese Alexander Jordan considered himself a master strategist as he placed an ad in the newspaper that would get him exactly what he wanted, an heir without having to be married. Wealthy enough he would be able to gain his hearts desire without having to endure having his heart broken again.

Faith Collins, was a member of the Richmond Ladies Sewing Circle. Living with her aunts and assorted relatives in the once beautiful antebellum mansion that was literally falling down upon their heads, she worried over just how they would be able to pay the taxes and fix the roof before being totally homeless. Discovering a folded newspaper with Reese's ad - an ad altered to read a tad differently than what was really intended -- Faith traveled to Washington and was hired. When the mistake was discovered, Faith was already halfway falling for her employer, and the absolute need of the advance payment swayed her into agreeing to have his child and then disappear once it was born. On the train, somewhere along the way to Cheyenne, Wyoming Faith knew she had fallen in love only it would be some time before Reese would recognize that the family he yearned for was in front of his face and included Faith!

This was an absolute gem of a romance. Reese was wealthy and influential, yet he did not have the bloodlines to sway his first love into marriage after she publicly jilted him at the alter in order to humiliate him. One thoughtless, hateful event soured him on marriage. Faith hadn't any idea of his history, but she was so very brave and loving thinking that she could prove invaluable and persuade him to love her before sending her away after she produced a child. Reese on the other hand, recognized his love, but was so afraid of asking her - for fear of being refused again - that he almost lost her anyhow. With an original plot, fresh writing, beautiful tenderness, lively secondary characters, and the hero's devilish charm, this is just what I look for and enjoy in a romance. I can highly recommend this read to lovers of early American frontier historicals - simply darling. --- Marilyn Rondeau, Official Reviewer for www.historicalromancewriters.com ---

                                  5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read!!.......1999-04-04

I am generally not one to pick up a Historical-type book of any kind. Including a Romance set back in the "olden" days. Luckily, I put my predjudices aside and read Golden Chances. I'm glad that I did. It was hard to put down! I laughed and I cried as Faith and Reese met, and fell in love - in some pretty strange circumstances. It's a wonderful read, and I'd recommend it to anyone - especially those of you, who wouldn't necessarily pick up a Historical book!

                                  5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this down!!!!!.......1998-12-06

This book was so good I literally could not put it down!!! I was up until three in the morning reading this book. The story is so interesting that I found myself cheering for Faith and cursing Resse when he did something utterly stupid. This is a must read!
