What better way to test the security surrounding a U.S. vice president-elect than to hire someone skilled in the killing arts to penetrate his protection? Assassination strategy, though, is only part of the assignment facing Jack Reacher in Without Fail. This restive, blunt-edged ex-military cop must also determine whether recent threats against VP-to-be Senator Brook Armstrong are legitimate or are primarily intended to embarrass the perfectionist head of Armstrong's new Secret Service detail, M.E. Froelich, who happens to have been a girlfriend of Reacher's late brother.
If Without Fail lacks the emotional urgency of Lee Child's previous novel, Echo Burning, it still barely lets the reader catch a decent breath between plot crests. Jack and his fetching yet formidable colleague, Frances Neagley, must figure out how warning letters to Armstrong are being delivered into the Secret Service sanctum, whether the senator is at risk because of something political or personal, and who staged the demonstration murders of two innocent men also named Armstrong, first initial B. Unfortunately, a few twists (including the source of a thumbprint applied to the threats against Armstrong) can be figured out in advance, and the story is light on character development. A tiny breach in Reacher's reclusive carapace opens as Froelich transfers the love she once felt for his brother toward him, and there are suggestions that Neagley may have depths of feeling just waiting to be plumbed. However, other players are mere ciphers--the sacrificial victims of an action-oriented yarn. --J. Kingston Pierce

Another Lee Child Success.......2007-09-01
I have read most of Lee Child's works and liked them all, but found Without Fail to be the best yet. Jack Reacher continues to entertain within the many plot twists and turns. I highly recommend all to the Reacher series books and especially this one.
Without Fail.......2007-07-22
An old flame of Jack's brother Joe approaches Jack Reacher for a security consultation. She's with the Secret Service and he soon finds himself deeply involved in trying to protect the Vice President elect. Can Reacher save the day once again? Will the new Vice President live long enough to take office? He will if Jack has anything to say about it. This is another action packed novel in the Jack Reacher Series. If you love thrillers and haven't read one before you ought to give the books a try. They make for great reading!
Glock.......2007-05-21
The only reason I don't give this work 5 stars is because Child made a cardinal mistake in describing one weapon used by the killers. Anyone who knows pistols knows that GLOCKS do not have external safeties.
Well Done Entry in the Reacher Series.......2007-04-25
WITHOUT FAIL is the eighth Jack Reacher book that I've read, and it's one of the better ones. In this novel, Mr. Reacher has been enlisted by the Secret Service to foil an assassination attempt against the vice-president. What results is a race against time against a brilliant assassin who will stop at nothing.
Like most of the other Reacher books, this book is very intense and suspenseful. Author Child has also plainly done a lot of research into how the Secret Service operates and investigates possible threats. I found a lot of this material to be quite interesting. All in all, I found WITHOUT FAIL to be a solid, informative page turner.
My major problem with this book is the ending, when the assassins and their motivations are revealed. I found the resolution of WITHOUT FAIL to be somewhat anti-climactic and disappointing. I was hoping for something bigger and better than what I ended up with.
This is a good book by Child, but I would recommend KILLING FLOOR, ECHO BURNING, ONE SHOT, PERSUADER, and THE HARD WAY as better choices.
Gripping.......2007-02-08
Contrary to what many reader's believe Lee Child is British, but moved with his family from Cumbria to the United States to begin a new career as an American thriller writer. What probably fools a lot of people is that is rare for a British author to be able to write American thrillers with any kind of authenticity. He has won a number of awards with his books and he lives just outside New York City with his American wife Jane. The couple have a grown-up daughter, Ruth and when Lee is not writing he shares his time between music, reader and supporting the New York Yankees.
There's no doubt about it Jack Reacher is a man's man but when it comes to the opposite sex, he a sucker for a cry for help and this has got him into more trouble than he bargained for on more than one occasion. This time he is asked by the persuasive Ms. Froelich to help her protect non other than the Vice-President of the US from an assassination attempt that is being set up and the powers that be have got wind of.
Reacher soon finds himself where he doesn't want to be involved with the Secret Service in Washington. Usually a loner Jack soon finds problems looming with the bureaucrats that are just as far reaching as the problems with a hard nosed, ruthless killer, who is just as willing to have Jack Reacher in his sights as the Vice-President, after all that is what assassin enjoys most of all, killing, and an extra one is just a bonus . . .

I use this book all the time.......2005-04-04
This is the ideal book for people who love and don't love to cook. The recipes are straight foward and the ingredients are easy to find (or substitute.) I have not had a bad recipe from the book yet and have bought copies for friends and family. Unlike most general cook books The Girl Can't Cook has a touch of elegance but nothing to be intimidated by. Every recipe is simple and fail safe. A must have in any cook book collection.
i CAN do it.......2004-09-30
My Dad bought me this book as a joke because, as the title says, "this girl can't cook". To my surprise I found tons of easy recipes that I can accomplish. And the fact that they are interesting and not common makes me actually look forward to throwing these recipes together. And surprise of all surprises... they're edible!! I'm right proud of myself.
The Cookbook I Reach for First.......2004-09-22
While the title of this cookbook might appeal to the novice cook, I can confirm that the recipes will suit a more experienced chef and delight the palates of all. Happily, this is achieved with a minimum of time spent by the cook. Helpful cooking tips (useful even for this seasoned cook) are found on many pages. From Chavich's new book I have prepared numerous dishes from the simple, perfect shrimp cocktail to the excellent tiramisu. Everything from North American classics to East Indian specialties and other trendy ethnic foods are included. When preparing food for a dinner party, a brunch or a meeting in my home, this is the cookbook I now reach for. The lively illustrations by Kirsten Horel contribute to the light, optimistic quality of this volume.

Good Suspense, Silly Romance........2007-02-15
I loved the action around the storyline involving the hijacking of the airplane and the brave young girl who risked her own life to save other passengers on the plane by posing as the politician's daughter. I also was surprised that Brockmann gave this girl something of a pretty horrible fate which, in a way, I had to respect.
The two main romances among the officers was awfully silly and transparent, but I'll give Brockmann points for some very sharp and funny dialog. The best romantic story was Helga's recollections of her brother and her best friend's sister during WWII, which I found very touching, and I also wished she didn't have Alheimer's.
Some of the plots are silly and often bile inducing, but there are so many layers in this verbal cake that one can almost pick and choose their favorite stories and disregard the rest easily. A generally good, fast paced book with something for everyone, and for that reason it works.
Another great Brockmann book.......2006-07-07
#3 in the series. Probably my least favorite so far. Not that I didn't like it. I did, just not as much as the others.
This one is about SEAL Senior Chief Stan Wolchonok, and Navy Helicopter pilot Teri Howe. Teri is a skittish woman who backs away from any conflict with men. She's being harassed by another Navy guy, who she had a one-night stand with 9 years earlier. Stan notices this, mostly because he's attracted to Teri. He doesn't think she'd ever notice him though because he's not particularly handsome. So he decides to try to help Teri with her issues with men, all the while not knowing that she is very attracted to him. In order to help, he gets her assigned to fly helos (helicopters) on a SEAL training mission. When they are on their way to their destination, word comes in that the SEALS are being re-routed because terrorists have hijacked a plane in a (fictional) European country (think Afghanistan). Usually woman aren't involved in SEAL missions, but since she's there, and she's a great pilot, she stays.
The rest of the book takes place in the foreign country where its very dangerous for Americans. The plane was taken over by a gunman who then forced the plane to land at an abandoned airstrip. When it landed, 4 other terrorists boarded the plane and held it hostage. They want 2 terrorists being held in jail to be released, and plan to use a Senator's daughter supposedly on board the plane as leverage. What they don't know is that the daughter never boarded the plane, having had her passport and boarding pass stolen beforehand. Another character, Gina Vitaglione, knows this and also sees that if the terrorists don't find the daughter, they will keep hurting hostages, so she says that she is the daughter. FBI top negotiator Max Bhagat is called in to try to talk to the terrorists. He and Gina develop a connection during this time.
I'm tempted to reveal more, because this is the part of the story I really wanted to read. Gina and Max are in several other books, and then they finally get "their" story in book 9. Which I'm dying to read. I love them together.
There's also the usual historical flashbacks - this time in the form of Stan's mother's friend, who has Alzheimer's. She keeps reverting back to her time in Denmark during the German invasion in WW2.
All in all, it was a good book. The plot line was excellent, really kept me into the story. The romance pairing was okay. I liked Stan and Teri together, but yet I don't think she did as good a job building the chemistry between them. Not enough to ruin the book. There is also more of the Sam/Alyssa pairing that has been used in the first 2 books, which helped out the romance-y department.

Beauty and the Beast? A May/December suspense that is sure to please!.......2006-05-17
SEAL Team 16 is called upon once again, this time to take down a group of terrorists who have hijacked a commercial airplane and forced it to land in Kazbekistan, they are charged with the rescue of 120 passengers on-board. Joining the SEAL team is FBI hostage negotiator Max Bhaghat, agents Jules Cassidy and Alyssa Locke, and Reserve chopper pilot Teri Howe.
Three romantic threads intertwine in this romantic thriller: a wistful WWII romance recalled by a Holocaust survivor; a turbulent relationship between SEAL Lt. Sam Starrett and FBI sharpshooter, Alyssa Locke; and a burgeoning romance between the team's Senior Chief Stanley Wolchonok and helicopter pilot Teri Howe.
When Teri Howe, one of the best helicopter pilots in the Naval Reserves, asks Stan to help her keep a harassing officer at bay, his instincts scream to comfort her and crush the offender. To put her out of reach of the officer, Stan arranges for her to accompany his team on a training op that quickly turns into a real-life rescue mission. Teri doesn't mind being in the middle of the action, and she's eager to spend time with the fierce but compassionate Senior Chief. Teri Howe is the pursuer, while Stan tries to steer clear of the whole "enlisted verses officer" fraternization rule. Each step Stan tries to take away from her, setting her up with Mike Muldoon, she takes two steps forward. It is nice to see the least outwardly romantic of SEAL Team 16 show his softer side. Steamy love scenes are perfectly and tastefully executed.
Meanwhile, Lt. Sam Starrett struggles to earn FBI sharpshooter, Alyssa Locke's trust. Max Bhaghat, FBI negotiator, endeavors to keep his dealings with American hostage, Gina Vittagliano, from becoming too personal; as the SEALs prepare to take out the terrorists. Over The Edge is fraught with so much tension and a harrowing assault of one of the passengers, that the team is forced to listen to in horror). Negotiator Max wrestles with his growing feelings for the hostage, and his inability to save her in time.
I was hooked from the beginning, and enjoyed the story within the story and WWII background. Taut suspense, witty dialogue and dashes of humor help maintain the novel's swift pacing, and Brockmann has a way of making characters come to life and feel like tangible people you come to care about. She is able to maintain a flow of storyline that knits all of these different pieces together and simply leaves you feeling like you know these people well. 4 1/2 Stars
"This op is turning into the f-ing love boat".......2006-05-09
[the above is an actual quote from the book]
I don't usually read romances, but got this one at the library. I thought: Thriller. Hijacked plane, navy seal...all the right stuff.
And the beginning was promising. Stan fixes everything, and has a human side to him that was compelling.
Then the plot hit the fan! As a thriller it stunk. The highjacking was interwoven into the plot weakly, as an after thought. The romantic "tension" between the protagonists was forced and irritating. The dialogue is mundane. The message that horniness leads to true romantic (Sam and Alyssa) love is rubbish.
The only worthwhile character was the highjacked girl, and I think it was brave of the author to not have her come out unscathed.
The historic (WWII) componant was interesting.
But overall, I kept asking who the audience is for this book. Not lovers of thrillers like me--and I wonder, do romance readers even care about a highjacked plane, or was that just getting in the way of wondering whether Teri will ever tell Sam that she loves him!?
You'll fall in love with the characters.......2005-12-26
Suzanne Brockmann has a way of making characters come to life and feel like tangible people you come to care about. This book in the Trouble Shooter series is one of my favorites. As is very often the case in a Brockmann book, you can read it out of order in the series and still love every minute of it, or read it in order and just find a deeper connection to familiar characters. Her wit is perfect. Steamy scenes, beautifully done. Her characters have heart!
Terri Howe is one of the most approachable female characters introduced by Brockmann to date. Senior Chief Stan is far from Movie Star gorgeous, but is a character you grow to love in a few short sentences.
Typical of a Brockmann book, she is able to seemlessly weave the story of Terri and Stan admist high action/adventure and danger in K-stan during a terrorist highjack situation. She offers a further unfolding of the story of Sam and Alyssa's explosive relationship as the FBI and the Seal's team must work together to resolve the crisis. Stan's mother experienced the losses of the holocaust and terror of the Nazi's. This story is beautifully told through the eyes of his mother's best friend, Helga - envoy to Isreal.
For most authors, I would recommend simplifying. Too many stories being told at the same time create a hard to follow chaos. That is not true of Suzanne Brockmann. She is able to maintain a flow of storyline that knits all of these different pieces together and simply leaves you feeling like you know these people well.
I've given this book to friends, male and female. They have all come back to me months later with the details of the story still fresh to them. I've never seen that with another author.

Better than the first edition........2006-11-11
In very brief...the core book for the Over The Edge game is great. The first edition was wonderful but was vexed with spelling errors, badly done maps, and some amature illustrations. The second edition kept all the good stuff, improved the mistakes, and even added some things. It connects more cleanly with all the other books in this series by referencing them. You can get by with a first edition but just upgrade a little and buy this book.
Unleash Yourself.......2003-04-30
Freedom... That's what I'm talking about.
I started playing Over the Edge with its first edition. My game group and I were tired of character classes, of prefab dungeon crawls and the typical nonsense associated with the roleplaying hobby. About that time, we were also getting heavily into Philip K. Dick (We Can Remember it for you Wholesale), David Lynch (Eraserhead), William S. Burroughs (Naked Lunch) and David Cronenberg (Videodrome). We wanted a game to reflect these diverse interests; we wanted something New and Different.
We played Over the Edge. At the time, the adventure was a terribly bizzare Lynch meets Clive Barker by way of Jacob's Ladder affair.
Each time I have played this game, it has been different -- mood and style. If you can imagine it, you can do it. The setting is fantastically interesting (welcome to Interzone, for all you Burroughs fans), the mechanics are a dream of streamlined, and there are no predetermined character races, classes, whatever. If you can imagine it, you can do it.
To this day, I run OTE -- now adapted into an email game, since my group has scattered across the continent.
In short, if you need charts to have fun. If you need someone else to set limits on your creativity (be it modules or character generation guidelines) then move along. There's a game called Rolemaster with your name on it.
If you want absolute freedom and unrestrained creativity in your gaming session, this is the game for you.
For me, OTE remains the standard by which all other game systems are judged.
Playground of desire.......2002-12-28
This is one of the great role - playing games: what else could one expect from johnathan tweet? (you know, the fellow who did 3D&D). Its choice of setting - a corrupt island - state in the mediterrainian is inspired: the various shady expatriates who gather in such places can create all kinds of strange trouble. Especially when some of them come from lost civilizations and other worlds.
This is NOT an illuminati conspiracy - theory spoof: the setting has strong internal consistency, and is derived from a more specific area of litterature than one would think from its open - ended nature: where beatnik and science fiction meet, giving birth to authors such as William Burroughs or Philip K. Dick. It has the kind of mythology suited to spies, drug addicts, the perverted, and space ghosts.
Oh, and the system actually tells you to make whatever character you like. Dont worry though, it still uses hit points.
Simple rules, inspiring mood... what more to ask?.......2001-03-09
This game has achieved something of a cult status, and quite rightfully so. First of all, the rules system is a beauty - very simple, elegant, and innovative. Second, the laid-back, surreal mood is achieved superbly - strange conspiracies, inexplicable events, other dimensions - whatever suits your fancy. At the same time, I have to admit, that I was more impressed with the mood rather than the actual setting - an English-speaking island in the middle of the Mediterranean just somehow didn't sound plausible(!) enough. But then again, I'm European.
Book Description
Whoever you are, do not hesitate.
This long-awaited book is, according to highly placed sources in several supranational intelligence organizations, a carefully encrypted communication. Sleeper agents receiving this transmission will understand what to do. Decode and follow the hidden instructions. Your years of training are coming to fruition; your years of silent immersion among these strangers you pretend to know will soon be at an end.
For the rest of you reading this well, this remains on the face of it a sourcebook of secret agents for the Over the Edge role-playing game of surreal danger. It includes the gadgets and fringe powers of Al Amarja's secret agents (known as "cloaks"), new characters to bring into your series, a major plot revolving around secret agents, plus lots of smaller story ideas to put everything in the book to good use. In short, it is a book that no Over the Edge GM should go without.
So whoever you are, do not hesitate. Buy this book.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I hoped........2006-11-11
I will start by saying that I am an avid fan of Over The Edge. In a world of dragon slaying, cybernetic, and "become the monster" role playing games this one is one of the more unique games out there. What I hoped Cloaks would be is more information on the equipment and fringe powers(called Shivs in this book) possessed by cloaks. These sections are very small and compete with a incongruent entry on astral entities that would have been better in a different book. The scenarios offered are not what I would call the best examples of an espinioge game. Little information is found here on the operatives of the various conspiracies on Al Amarja. It sort of promises information on groups like the CPC and the Earthlings but just gives you sample cloaks. The useful thing I did find was some basic advice on how to run a Cloaks game (tips on story structure, setting, ect.). I have read nearly all of the books in this series and can say (in my humble opinion) that you can get by without it. Yet if you want all the information printed for this game (for completeness) you may find some useful nuggets in the book.
