Book Description
Despite their seemingly impenetrable western facade, the Sandia Mountains of central New Mexico have been home to humankind for millennia. Ancient cultures ventured into these peaks for the creeks, game, and shelter. The Spanish established protective outposts along the canyons and intermarried with local tribes. Civil War soldiers passed through en route to their infamous battle at Glorieta Pass. Navajos marched around the mountains' southern end after the confinement that ended their Long Walk. Anglo settlers cleared the hilly land and built cabins. And tuberculosis patients moved up into primitive resorts, hoping that the mountains' abundant sunshine and fresh air would help them heal. Today the tiny resorts and traditional hamlets of the Sandias are established villages and communities-Carnuel, Tijeras, San Antonio, Cedar Crest, Sandia Park, San Antonito, Placitas, and others-and the rough dirt roads that once saw the passing of ox carts are highways and even an interstate. The area's history lives on, however, in crumbling adobe walls, bits of rust, fading memories, and in this photographic retrospective.

Engrossing!.......2007-04-10
It's hard to stop reading, engrossing, hard to stop reading!
My wife and are enjoying this book immensely, well written and the details of the areas of the places around us here in Tijeras are fantastic. This book brings the rich history to light in an enjoyable read. The photographs are amazing, to see the places as they were and are now.
Mike Smith, the author is extremely accessible for any questions or comments about his book, the region and the history.
Definitely a five star book, run now to get yours!
Changed how I look at my hometown.......2006-11-22
Growing up in one of the towns of the Sandia Mountains, I can ashamedly say that I really didn't do much digging into the history of the place. I don't know why really, I guess I figured it was just there and left it at that. Then comes along this little dandy of a history book wherein the unique history of the place I grew up in is laid before you through non-run of the mill descriptions, quirky photos, and some fantastic quotes from the people who have made up and make these towns.
This book is published through Arcadia, which has about, I don't know how many, of these history/photo style books. I have read a few books from Arcadia and maybe it's because this is one that specifically talks about the place I grew up in, but Towns of the Sandia Mountains seems to sit a few levels above the others Arcadia has out there.
This book reads like a dreamy ride through the past on an old desert road. Starting on Route 66 in Albuquerque and lazily winding it's way up into the mountain towns, past the towns, higher into the mountian, down a back pass, to the front of mountian and back into Albuquerque, picking up the towns of Carnuel, Tijeras, Hobbies, San Antonio, Cedar Crest, Canoncito, San Antonito, Sandia Park, and Placitas along the way, as well as a brief concluding chapter on Albuquerque touching on its growth into the mountain. Some of the pictures in this book are completely astounding to see. There are amazing photos of areas with just a few cattle grazing around that now have freeways and strip malls running through them. Pictures of places, if you know that area, you would never recognize. Pictures of Hippies and TB patients alike escaping into the mountains. People who made this town that you never knew who now you can know.
This book does away with the dull page after page of random portraits of people with boring captions style of history writing and brings new life to history.
If you live in the Sandia, used to, or are just interested in a unique area then I would say this is a good little read for you. Eight thumbs up!
Book Description
"Alburquerque is a rich and tempestuous book, full of love and compassion, the complex and exciting skullduggery of politics, and the age-old quest for roots, identity, family. . . . There is a marvelous tapestry of interwoven myth and magic that guides Anaya's characters' sensibilities, and is equally important in defining their feel of place. Above all, in this novel is a deep caring for land and culture and for the spiritual well-being of people, environment, landscape."--John Nichols, author of The Milagro Beanfield War: A Novel
". . . Alburquerque portrays a quest for knowledge. . . . [It] is a novel about many cultures intersecting at an urban, power-, and politics-filled crossroads, represented by a powerful white businessman, whose mother just happens to be a Jew who has hidden her Jewishness, . . . and a boy from the barrio who fathers a child raised in the barrio but who eventually goes on to a triumphant assertion of his cross-cultural self."--World Literature Today
"Alburquerque fulfills two important functions: it restores the missing R to the name of the city, and it shows off Anaya's powers as a novelist."--Alan Cheuse, National Public Radio
"Alburquerque is a rich and tempestuous book, full of love and compassion, the complex and exciting skullduggery of politics, and the age-old quest for roots, identity, family."--John Nichols, author of The Milagro Beanfield War

Very enjoyable.......2007-05-04
I was pleased to read Alburquerque after attempting Jalamanta. The latter was such new age tripe and difficult to read that I put it down after two evenings of trying to make it through. The story seems that it would have been good if the language itself was accessible. I started Alburquerque right away to make sure that I didn't need to get rid of all the other Anaya books on my list. I don't.
This is a great book about a young man, Abran, who finds out that he is adopted at the age of 21 in a letter from his mother written on her deathbed. He goes to her side and she dies that evening, but he doesn't know who is father is. His mother kept this secret in her heart and only his father knows, but had promised Cynthia not to divulge the secret.
The coming of age story is set in the midst of a mayoral race in Albuquerque, and Abran agrees to fight for Frank Dominic, a rich man who uses his power and money to get what he wants. Abran's search finds him true love, friendship, and eventually a confidence that "he is who he is" (a theme that keeps repeating itself throughout the book--an attempt to remind Abran that even without the knowledge of his biological father, he knows who he is).
Well-written, well-crafted and a very interesting book to read, Alburquerque will be on my "recommend to others" list for some time.
Well-written tale about Albu(r)querque, with surrealistic elements.......2005-11-27
"Alburquerque" is a fine work by Rudolfo Anaya, and although I do not understand certain references to "Chicanos", this reads very well. Abran is a young man who discovers that he is adopted, and visits his dying biological mother in order to find his biological father(who we learn to be Ben Chavez), but she doesn't tell him. Abran then meets Lucinda, who was close to his mother before she died, and they fall in love. The novel follows their story, and the political intrigues involving the mayor who also wants Abran as her lover and her two main rivals, who are sworn enemies: Abran's maternal grandfather Walter Johnson who is a rich banker and has a wife of secret Jewish ancestry; and Frank Domenic, who thinks that he is descenced from the Duke of Alburquerque himself, and wants to use Abran in his scheme to bring a casino and a canal system to Duke City. There are also amusing magical elements like Coyote who helps Joe, a Native American Vietnam vet to get to Abran in time, and Juan Oso, who can communicate with bears. In other novels, certain things wouldn't work that well, but here they are used to great effect. This cannot be easily classified, but it deserves to be known as great literature
excellent.......2004-04-02
This book is definetley very well writen, and i would recommend it to anyone. It gives an insight to the mexican american world and the struggles one faces in the barrio. I usually never finish a book but this really caught my eye.
Could not put it down..........2004-01-01
I first read "Bless Me, Ultima" for school and I loved it so I then read "Alburquerque." I enjoyed both books very much. The dreams and healing magic tied into the Catholic religion was very interesting. The characters were unforgetable and the settings in the books I could see in my mind. I could not put it down and I read both in one day.
a new gem.......2003-01-03
An interesting story full of enough tidbits of history to make you want to do independent research on Mexico and read more of Anaya's writings. The characters are colorful and have twists and turns that keep you wondering until the end. I learned some interesting bits about how politics might have been run in the times and how people's pasts never really rest.

Thank you Lesley King!!!.......2006-11-11
I just returned from five days in Santa Fe, Taos & Albuquerque. Whenever and wherever I travel I always look for the local experience. For this, this guide is fantastic!! Lesley is a real local. Her descriptions are passionate, personal and accurate. Lesley - please move to another state and write another book!! I cannot thank you more!!
Frommer's Santa Fe, Taos & Albuquerque.......2006-02-17
I think this book will be more helpful after I have moved to New Mexico, using it as a guidebook. I also have the Fodar's guide to New Mexico and I found it much more interesting. It's something you can actually pick up and read for entertainment as well as information and it has wonderful color photographs. The Frommer's book is mostly information and lacks interest.
Excellent Guide to Northern NM.......2005-06-08
Just returned from Taos and Santa Fe and I was surprised about the accuracy of King's reviews. You can plan an excellent week using this book alone (and perhaps a more detailed hiking book). Even locals we spoke with were impressed that we knew of some of the out-of-the-way places. One note: the prices listed for many of the recommended restaurants have gone up (probably due to their newfound popularity from this book).
spot on.......2001-09-24
we just completed a two-week New Mexico vacation, and found that time after time, hotel after hotel, restaurant after restaurant, attraction after attraction, this guide was absolutely spot on. We brought another guide ("The Insider's Guide to Santa Fe") and wound up relying on Frommer's exclusively.
We were most impressed by the recommendations for small out-of-the-way places we _never_ would have gone to otherwise, "Chef du Jour" in Albu. being a perfect example.
Our only quibble is that the author praises the food a little over-much. Desserts she describes as the "best you'll ever eat" we would describe as "good", for example, but then again we're from the bay area and i guess we're pretty spoiled.
Informative and not afraid to criticize.......2000-07-18
We used this guide to plan a couple of trips to Santa Fe and in and around Taos, and were very happy with the results. The book starts with a general introduction to northern New Mexico, covering history, art, architecture and so on. Then there's a chapter on general visitor information for the region, and a section for foreign visitors. The remaining chapters are:
Getting to Know Santa Fe; Where to Stay in Santa Fe; Where to Dine in Santa Fe; What to See & Do in Santa Fe; Santa Fe Shopping; Santa Fe After Dark; Excursions from Santa Fe; Getting to Know Taos; Where to Stay in Taos; Where to Dine in Taos; What to See & Do in Taos; Albuquerque
The organization is good, with the hotels, for example, clearly broken out by price range ("Very Expensive", "Expensive", "Moderate" and "Inexpensive"). But the real value of the book is the author's candid evaluations. We've been burned in the past by guide books that gave every establishment a glowing review, so it was pleasant to use this book to find lunch in Taos one day last month. Here's some of what we found:
Ogelvie's Bar and Grill: "The food here is not flavorful, and the atmosphere is dated"
Eske's Brew Pub: "The crowd is local, a few people sitting at the bar . . . . At times it can be a rowdy place, but mostly it's just fun, lots of ski patrollers and mountain guides . . . ."
Outback in Taos: "My kayaking buddies always go here after a day on the river. That will give you an idea of the level of informality (very), as well as the quality of the food and beer (great) and the size of the portions (large)."
It's clear that the author really loves the area, and knows it inside out; we went to eight or ten places (hotels and restaurants) that she recommends, and didn't regret a single one.

Possibly the very best book on the subject.......2005-12-10
This book is outstanding.
I've read quite a few books on the subject of Albuquerque lately, and this is by far the most complete, most compelling, and most well written. It's so good that I find myself recommending it to people who aren't even from Albuquerque.
It tells the story of Albuquerque, of New Mexico, of the railroads, of the Spanish conquest, of the West, and of the Civil War. It's full of almost everything and almost everyone that ever came into town, affected the town, or was born in the town. The author has an obvious affinity for the little known and the unusual, and the unique facts he digs up enhance every passage of the more commonly known history.
For instance, the volcanoes west of town are still cooling, and even released a burst of volcanic gasses in 1881. They're NOT extinct. When the infamous imprisonment of Navajos at Fort Sumner after the Long Walk ended, the Navajo men and women were marched into Albuquerque out of Tijeras Canyon, and they wept with joy when they saw the distant Mount Taylor. Oh, and Albuquerque's early mayors used to decide elections by meeting in a dirt lot and fighting with sticks.
The book also contains excellent history on the surrounding area. It features several pages on the oft-neglected town of Carnuel, quite a bit on Atrisco, and several pages on the other small towns that have since been absorbed into Albuquerque itself.
There are also dozens of pages of old photos and paintings and maps of the town. They're terrific.
If you live or have lived in Albuquerque, or if you are at all interested in the area, this book will seize and enthrall you. You will turn its pages as if it were an F. Paul Wilson novel, and when you finally put it down and drive down Central Avenue for your groceries, you will see the world around you with new eyes.
You will see the world for what it is--a place where things don't just happen here and now, but a place where things have always happened--things that have put you here today--things that have put HERE here today.

Book Description
Her hair was black and silk against her ivory skin; her gray eyes burned with opal fire. The love child of King Edward IV, Roseanna was pledged to her father's most prized warrior. He was dark, strong, and commanding, and in the bedchamber, where he forced her to honor her marriage vows, she learned not to crave his intoxicating touch. And still she swore not to love him even as she surrendered to the dark rapture of...the Raven.
Customer Reviews:
I loved it.......2006-07-01
The book was great, I loved Roger! He was such a good guy but at the same time he was real. And Roseanna, well she was a bit spoiled, but remember she was raised this way. It was a very good book and I just started reading it today for the 2nd time. That's how much I love it!
This book shouldn't even be on the rating system .......2006-02-20
I had to force myself to finish this book, and am now burning it. No one should be exposed to such a sick and distrubing book ever! People should have the right to read a good book and not be disillusioned by it! This is the first book i've read from henley, and i really thought i was going to like it. I am sad to say it makes me wariy to even try anymore of her books. This book should not even be called a romance book, i can't think of a good genre to put it in! Sure the history was rich and the characters were strong but when you play cat and mouse for so long you can only hold your audiance's curiosity for so long. It makes me sick to my stomach that her own uncle raped her, not once but twice and she let him! The ending wasn't resolved since no justice was served. To add insult to injury she married someone eles only to have her husband come back from the dead and her second husband join the bad guys in the end, it would've been better if he died...i don't care if she had to have sex to protect her son, but her father is the king, surely she could hide behind him, being the brat that she was. sorry to spoil the fun for you as it did for me. not worth your money and time, i would rather burn it that give it away.
You ever buy all the authors books because you were blown away by one?.......2005-09-13
I am so guilty of this and am getting burned.
I read The Pirate and the Pagan which is by far one of my most favorite books of all time. I also read reviews saying that the series of novels with the "and the" in the titles were just as good so I bought them inspite of reading many other reviews that did not recommend them.
Well the Raven and the Rose started off like her other books and I was sure I was going to absolutely LOVE it. I felt positive that I was going to be the one who understood Henley when all the other reviewers didn't and I was going to be blown away. BUT UGH!!! I couldn't stand these two by page 200.
When an author drags out resistance between two characters it gets old fast. If this book was reality I would feel the same way and fight just as savagely as the heroine did, but it isn't...its fantasy and I either want a the reading high you get from an intense fast moving plot...or I am moving on.
I always should trust my instincts with books. A tightly packed book with small type shows thought and care of the finished product (as in the Pirate and the Pagan) A book with large type and fewer pages shows formula following and writing for a paycheck instead of passion.
I not giving up on Henley....I just need a break.
Great Book.......2005-07-19
This was a wonderful historic Romance. I would reccomend it to anyone that enjoys history and romance as much as I do.
The Raven and the Rose.......2002-12-03
This was the first book I read and it was pretty good but I hated the ending (or at least what comes just before) and I probably wouldn't recommend this book to my friends for that reason. Luckily I bought another book by this author or I may not have read anything else after this one.
Customer Reviews:
Did not expect to be disappointed, but I was.......2006-05-18
From the back cover:
The last thing he expected was to love her.
The raven...
Daniel Severin--A ruthless mercenary with a heart of stone, he has been sent to the Hospice of Saint Bernard's, high up in the Swiss Alps, with a deadly mission.
The rose...
Lorelie du Clerc--A woman raised by the holy men of Saint Bernard's, she knows little of the world beyond the mountains, yet her very existence threatens the foundations of Napoleon Bonaparte's ever-widening empire.
The raven and the rose...
In the face of an approaching army and its fiercely determined leader, Lorelei and Daniel risk everything for a love that should never have begun, but now can never be denied.
And my review:
I expected more from this book, since it was written by Susan Wiggs, who is a very talented storyteller. But I found that this book really dragged. As the official editorial review on this page says (not a customer review), THE RAVEN AND THE ROSE feels longer than its 500 pages. It started off so well, but then just started to die right around the 200 page mark.
I was impressed by this author's historical backdrop. She obviously did a lot of research, as this is a richly layered novel. The problem was that big sections of the book read like pages from a history textbook. I read romance for romance. The historical backdrop is an added bonus, not the thing I want the main focus to be on. If you have no problem with that, then you'll probably enjoy this. But if you just want a historical romance without the history lesson, you might want to skip this one.
Susan Wiggs used to be on my auto-buy list, but lately I've been disappointed in her.
Wowie .......2005-10-05
This book is about a girl who has een raised by saints in the alps. Suddenly, during a amensia causing avalanche, she meets Daniel Severin. Something leads to something (I'm not going to ruin the book for you) and they become lovers.
A book with 'she tasted like fresh cherries' as a line it is going to be hot. I winced when I read every love scene, but I didn't get to finish it, I got up to page 230 something. If you love Love and a little history, you'll love this book.
Passion, Murder, History and More.......2002-06-27
Daniel Severin is a mercenary sent to the Hospice of Saint Bernard in Switzerland to "eliminate" the beheaded King Louis' little-known bastard daughter, Lorelei. Lorelei unknowingly holds the fate of nations in her hands, not to mention Daniel's life when she and the clerics of the hospice rescue him, unconscious and badly wounded, from a deadly avalanche.
Daniel finds himself in an unfamiliar helpless state, forced to depend on the very object of his deadly mission to heal his body, and he reluctantly finds his heart and his resolve softening by Lorelei's uncomplicated trust, friendship, and innocent charm.
Soon Daniel learns that someone else wants Lorelei dead, and, to his own amazement, he finds himself desperate to protect the one he was sent to kill.
The blossoming love between the tortured, jaded mercenary and the sheltered healer is a joy to read, a gentle love story that will touch your heart. This seemingly impossible and improbable love buds and then flourishes to all-consuming passion, but all the while Daniel knows that eventually Lorelei's innocence will be irrevocably shattered when she discovers the secrets he harbors.
The Raven and the Rose is one of Ms. Wiggs' best novels. Don't let the reference to Napolean lull you into a sense of "been there, read that." The story is historically fascinating, powerfully yet tenderly romantic, and full of intrigue and mystery that will keep you turning the pages.
In the glorious Swiss mountains, The Hospice of Saint Bernard and its inhabitants will intrigue you. Could one of the priests who raised Lorelei from infancy be a murderer? The mystery deepens as circumstances lead the couple to France where they become inexorably interwoven into the politically tumultuous times and their love is challenged by deception and danger.
Wonderfully written and more than worth a read!
HISTORY WITH INTRIGUE!!.......1999-02-25
I consider this one of the best story lines I have read in a long time. There was so much going on in this book I couldn't put it down. With wonderful romance, intrigue and even the history of how they train those heroic dogs. If you are looking for a story that offers something different GET THIS one. I am about to start her "Lily and the Leopard" and am sure I will enjoy it as much as her other books.
A LONG WAY AWAY FROM SLEEP.......1998-11-10
I buy alot of books and when I bought and read Vows Made In Wine, Circle In Water I knew I found a great writer someone who will keep my attention, so I bought all the books that I could by Susan Wiggs. When I picked this book up in the afternoon I didn't put it down until early the next morning, I spent my whole day and evening right to the wee morning hours reading it, it was great. I was sorry to see it end.

Customer Reviews:
When the plot unravels.......2006-01-14
E. Rose Sabin's fantasy trilogy spins to a fast-paced, unsatisfying finale in "When the Beast Ravens." It starts with a suspenseful murder mystery and some serious personal issues, but unravels in the final chapter, as if Sabin had gotten sick of the story.
It's been two years since Gray Becq was kidnapped and enspelled in the Dire Realms. He returns to the Lesley Simonton School for the Magically Gifted, but can't shake his paranoia and fear. And then odd things happen: wands and talismans go missing, and rooms are ripped up. Then a student is near-fatally attacked.
As more students die and the mystery deepens, Gray gets more moody and erratic, and even has lapses in memory. Did he bring a demon back from the Dire Realms? To find the answer -- and the murderer -- Gray must team up with the two powerful young Gifted who almost destroyed the school two years ago...
Though there are a few references to the prequel, this book mainly stems from "A School for Sorcery," a sort of wizard-high-school book. Sabin's writing has improved greatly, and this is tighter, tenser story with plenty of potential. But the ending just sort of putters to a stop.
The first nine-tenths of the book are exceptional. Sabin spins together fantasy -- demons, spells and shapeshifters -- with a compelling murder mystery. Additionally, panther-girl Lina gets captured and interrogated by some nasty police who hate the Gifted. Some truly great storylines, especially Gray being forced to trust and care for his nemesis Oryon, and some of them blossom over the course of the book.
Unfortunately, the solid storyline unravels by the end. After some truly touching, moving scenes, we're treated to a silly trial scene that includes the dead accusing their murderer. All I could think of was "bring out your dead." The final pages seem tacked on, and Gray's final decision seems completely out of the blue.
If "When the Beast Ravens" is the end of E. Rose Sabin's trilogy, then it shouldn't be one. Starts strong, continues strong, and finishes very, very weakly. Here's hoping that Gray's story isn't over yet.
delightful trilogy for Harry Potter fans.......2005-01-07
After being taken by the dire women into their dimension, he was tortured and changed into a beast. Gray Becq is no longer enamored with the Lesley Simonton School for the Magically Gifted though he returns there following his summer vacation. He quickly gets into a fight with two of the people who summoned the creatures from the Dire Realms.
Not long after somebody steals artifacts from the students and a demon enters this world. The Headmistress believes that Gray's return from the Dire Realm allowed the demon to enter this dimension. The concern is that they have no spell to send the demon home to the Dire Realm. The students are guarded with seemingly unbreakable spells, but someone manages to do the impossible. Everyone concludes that a killer is bringing in demons from the Dire Realm and using them to break the safety spells. Gray discovers that he hasthe power to travel through different timelines and dimensions. His former enemies join forces with him to battle their common foes and send the demons back to the hell where they belong.
This is the final book of a delightful trilogy that ties up the loose ends from A SCHOOL FOR SORCERY and A PERILOUS POWER, which obviously means reading the previous novels first. The climax is awesome as the students put aside their jealousies to forge a team knowing this is the only chance, remote as that is, to defeat the overwhelming adversaries. Fans of Harry Potter will enjoy this fine series especially this terrific conclusion.

I'm ravin' about raven! .......2005-03-04
I could not put this book down! It took me through a spiritual adventure with humor, wisdom, and brilliance. Pretty real stuff for a former soap star.
Beyond the usual actress' focus on the entertainment world.......2002-08-08
From The Raven To The Dove is an autobiography by an actress who portrayed Raven Whitney on the soap opera Edge of Night provides plenty of involving insights that go beyond the usual actress' focus on the entertainment world to discuss her personal transformation and union with God. Angelic messages, family connections to God, and spiritual insights are the driving force of her coverage.
I Love This Book.......2002-06-12

Page Turner.......2002-06-09
Half expecting just another celebrity-turned-writer voyage into mediocrity, imagine my surprise when I found I could not put this book down, literally, until I had read it through. Witty, funny and profound: Ms Gabet's 'joie de vivre' is intoxicating; her writing is superb. I highly recommend this one, not just for the good read, but for the life lessons Sharon unveils to her readers with the utmost candor and compassion.
