Tony Hillerman is a national treasure, having achieved critical acclaim, chart-topping popularity, and a sterling reputation as an ambassador between whites and Indians. Fortunately, he's also still a marvelous writer, much imitated but never equaled. The Sinister Pig--his 16th novel to feature Navajo cops Joe Leaphorn and/or Jim Chee--isn't his best book, but it's still a pleasure from the first page to the last. Its plot is almost too complex to summarize, involving the mysterious shooting of an ex-CIA agent, financial shenanigans around oil-and-gas royalties, disappearing congressional interns, exotic pipeline technology, and the cross-border trade in both drugs and illegal aliens.
Officer Bernadette Manuelito has left the Navajo Tribal Police for the U.S. Customs Service, patrolling the barren borderlands of southern New Mexico. There, her curiosity and smarts land her in a growing peril that provides much of the book's suspense--and invokes the protective instincts of Sergeant Chee, who still hasn't quite been able to tell her how he feels about her. It's impossible not to care about Hillerman's exquisitely drawn repertory characters, nor to overlook the pleasures of his beautifully crafted and relaxed-seeming prose. In the midst of these virtues are a few warts: several sections are a little flat or awkward, and the villainous plutocrat behind it all is short on plausibility (though lots of fun to hate). But even a lesser Hillerman is still a richer, more satisfying read than most authors' top stuff. --Nicholas H. Allison
Book Description
The victim, well dressed but stripped of identification, is found at the edge of the vast Jicarilla Apache natural gas field just inside the jurisdiction of the Navajo Tribal Police, presenting Sergeant Jim Chee with a complex puzzle.
Why did the Washington office of the FBI snatch custody of this case from its local agents, cover it with secrecy, and call it a hunting accident? What was the victim seeking among the maze of pipelines and pumping stations in America's largest gas field? Was he investigating the embezzlement of billions of dollars from the Indian Tribal royalty trust in the Department of the Interior?
On a level nearer to Chee's heart, did photographs Bernie Manuelito had taken on an exotic game ranch near the Mexican border reveal something connected with this crime? Had Bernie, once a member of his squad but now a rookie Border Patrol Officer, put herself in terrible danger?
Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn helps Chee connect the lines on a dusty old map to find the answers -- and the Sinister Pig -- among the great Scimitar-Horned Oryx grazing on the historic old Tuttle Ranch.

Sinister Pig.......2007-09-27
Bernadette (Bernie) Manuelito gets to be the hero. If you like Tony Hillerman, you'll like this one.
Hillerman off the Reservation.......2007-08-23
Great, as are all of Tony Hillerman's Navajo stories. Off the Reservation and into the modern world.
Worst Hillerman mystery ever?.......2007-07-15
Characters you don't care about, exposition instead of action, Leaphorn and Chee MIA for much of the story...this one has it all. I gave it a generous chance for five chapters, then called it quits because it was uninteresting and uninvolving.

A Return to Hillerman.......2007-06-27
I had not read Mr. Hillerman in awhile. I was on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and ran out of reading material. I picked up "The Sinister Pig" and was very glad I did! It felt like I had returned to some old friends (Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn). The plot involves murder, oil, drugs, and politics. A great, quick read.
A Fall from Grace.......2007-01-05
I have read most of Mr. Hillerman's Chee/Leaphorn books and enjoyed all of them, even the early ones that lacked the depth of his later works, but this book left me cold. Every character of worth Hillerman created had to have spot in this book, and many didn't fit well. This was too contrived to hold interest.
Book Description
A startling psycholinguistic exploration of the boundaries of love and knowledge. Often controversial, always inspired, Jacques Lacan here weighs theories of the relationship between the desire for love and the attainment of knowledge from such thinkers as Aristotle, Marx, and Freud. He leads us through mathematics, philosophy, religion, and, naturally, psychoanalysis into an entirely new way of interpreting the two most fundamental human drives. Long anticipated by English-speaking readers, this annotated translation presents Lacan's most sophisticated work on love and desire.
Also available in paperback from Lacan's Seminar: Book I: Freud's Writings on Technique; Book II: The Ego in Freud's Theory and in the Technique of Psychoanalysis; Book III: The Psychoses; Book VII: The Ethics of Psychoanalysis; and Book XI: The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis
Customer Reviews:
Simply amazing.......2005-09-05
A wonderful translation (with great notes), of an incredible text. Lacan is a very "dense" writer - in the sense both of difficult and rich. I am not even going to try to sum up all of the ideas and insights that this book will force YOU to produce. (For a useful introduction to Lacan see the books written by Bruce Fink - the translator).
There's such a thing as One.......2003-01-19
If you are familiar with Lacan, you probably know what you're in for...if not, read on for my own brief understanding in 50 words or less. First of all -- Lacan is well-worth the effort. He is difficult, whooly, interesting, funny, serious, witty. "There's such a thing as One" It is there that the serious begins. For Lacan as for Freud, the child is born into desire. But for Lacan this desire is more than sexual (though also sexual) Desire comes out of the imbalance between what we perceive, language and images, and what actually is the Real. It is impossible to satisfy this desire, because we cannot know what we want. The real is utterly unknowable. Longing is displaced -- we long for everything else instead: sex, food, drugs, alcohol, consumer objects--trying to fill the void of desire. But we are not satisfied by any of these things, because as soon as the desire is fulfilled it vanishes.
Some of Lacan's concepts (as the one above) I read and say -- yes that's IT ... as Lacan said in the lecture translated in this book-- "It's not working out and the whole world talks about it and a large part of our activity is taken up with saying so." Many of the concepts in this book were worth the wading through it -- which I did in one night, entranced, reading through as if in a maze -- or in one of Lacan's Borromean Knots (in which the symbolic, the imaginary, and the real are linked like the rings of a Borromean knot)
This is an excellent translation of a key Lacan text........1999-03-12
In his translation of this, one of Lacan's late and most provocative seminars, Bruce Fink not only clarifies and corrects mistakes in the Jacqueline Rose translation, _Feminine Sexuality_, but offers the _entire_ Seminar XX with careful attention paid to Lacan's multivalent language. Extensively footnoting Lacan's text, Fink aims to open up fully Lacan's references and wordplay, and this proves to be an approach especially helpful for the non French-speaking reader. Seminar XX may not be the introductory text novice Lacan scholars would wish for, (there are some new books on Lacan by other authors that would be more helpful for those seeking an overview of Lacan's teaching and methodology) but this text could be a good place to start with Lacan per se simply because the translation makes it easier to read than other, more widely read of Lacan's translated texts. Students interested particularly in feminine sexuality and jouissance will find this text key, and there are chapters in which Lacan addresses the limits of knowledge, God and mysticism, and the sexual relation. In this seminar, Lacan also offers exegesis on the four discourse structures and the dense but important sexuation graph, which positions the masculine and feminine in relation to epistemology and the Father's Law. People doing work on Jakobsonian poetics might find the early chapters especially interesting for their critical approach.
contains in-depth study of human psychology.......1998-05-28
I liked this book because of it's sequential and systematical analysis of human behaviour.

Falling into bed magically leads to falling in love...ugh!.......2006-05-31
I guess this formula has been popular for years, given this book's age and how novels like this are still being written. Basic plot: boy meets girl. Hormones fly. They fall into bed and have wild sex (the girl is almost always a virgin while the boy has had dozens of women yet magically doesn't have an STD). They have a fight and don't see each other for years. Years later, they meet again by accident and play stupid, childish mind games with each other (I love you but I'll pretend I hate you for some inexplicable reason). They finally admit their love and have more hot sex. The end.
That pretty much sums it up. If you like reading about cheap sex between strangers, and pathetic, whiny women, well, then you might like this. But if you want more between the characters than lust and petty bickering, I'd suggest you pass on this one.
A good read.......2006-02-13
AMAZING!
This book was written beautifully. Though Sandra Brown always mentioned Camille's breasts and that kind of bothered me. But over all it was great! I found that Zack was a little superficial but his personality and sense of humor made you fall in love with him and the book. It was very good I enjoyed every second of the 4 hours in which I finished the book. (With occasional breaks)
Also recommended: All books of Phyllis A. Whitney's is strongly recommended. And Angel Creek by Linda Howard, Kindom of Dreams, and Perfect by Judith McNaught
This is a very sweet story, and a quick read. .......2005-10-10
Camille has been hired to renovate the aging estate of an ailing and genteel gentleman, who wants to leave something welcoming and homey for future generations. When she arrives at the mansion, she realizes that Zack, a man with whom she shared a vacation romance and night of passion 2 years earlier, is the heir. Neither she nor Zack have been able to forget the other and move on in their respective love lives, but they need to resolve some misunderstandings before they can pick up where they left off. The bickering and unnecessary nastiness in trying to put distance between themselves and the other turned me off a bit because I felt their reasoning for pushing the other away wasn't very believable and could have been handled more respectfully and more easily with better communication. Yet, I still enjoyed the story because it was very cute and romantic. Camille, Zack and all the secondary characters were very likable, especially in their compassion towards the ailing Rayburn.
I was surprised to learn that this was Sandra Brown's very first novel. Although not as polished as her more recent ones, there are flashes of her usual brillance in the colorful desciptions of the impressive antebellum plantation and the attention to detail given to Camille's restoration and redecoration project.
Great for what it was..........2005-10-05
As a huge Sandra Brown fan, I'll be the first to admit that her earlier love stories are a bit of a let down when compared to her more recent and more detailed novels. Once she made the jump from her short romances to her longer romantic suspense, it's clear that her strength really lies in the latter (try Exclusive, Best Kept Secrets, Where There's Smoke).
If you read Loves Encore and compare it to Brown's later mysteries, you're bound to be disappointed. However, as far as short, sweet romances go, Brown's really aren't bad at all. I've read most of them, and I really thought this was one of the better, despite it being the author's first.
Like other reviewers I thought it was a bit shallow in character and plot development, but looking at it from a purely romantic standpoint, I actually loved it. The story was terribly sweet. I would put it more in the category of a modern fairy tale than I would a well-thought out novel, but for a quick afternoon read to give you a smile, this will certainly do the trick. Most of these early Sandra Brown romances I found to be pretty unremarkable, but this one ended up on my bookshelf for a quick "pick me up."
Don't Bother.......2005-06-14
There are too many other good books out there (by Sandra Brown and others) to even waste your time on this one. It's flat, and not to mention silly. I didn't like either or the main characters, it just didn't do it for me. I believe this was Sandra's first novel (don't quote me). If it was, I'll give her credit, it was not bad for a first. But like I said, just leave it on the shelf and move on.
Book Description
Beka returns for the final semester of her senior year and quickly finds herself in trouble. The song she wrote and performed offended a fellow student and the principal blames Beka and her teacher Mr. Thompson. Meanwhile, she’s torn between two different guys, Mark and Josh. And as she prepares for her father’s upcoming wedding, Beka is devastated to learn the family will be moving out of their house and into her dad’s fiancee’s house. Soon Beka is overwhelmed with decisions, including the option to sign a record contract and move to LA after graduation.
Customer Reviews:
Life is seldom without some sort of difficulty .......2007-06-01
Sarah Anne Sumpolec wraps up the Becoming Beka series on a hopeful and satisfactory note. Beka, now within a handbreadth of graduating, spends the remainder of her senior year in high school debating and making decisions. Whether she should take a risk to pursue a career in music and move to Los Angeles where her soon-to-be new family lives is always just a thought away from Beka's consciousness. Should she continue "seeing" Mark, whose very presence causes her mind to go into neutral and her standards to suddenly become debatable? Can a long-distance friendship (or possible romantic relationship) with Josh ever work? And which college should she choose?
With all these decisions preying on Beka's mind, she is also forced to take action --- responsible action --- on behalf of herself and those close to her. Her sister Lucy is becoming more distant and angry by the day. Beka pushes as far as she's able to reach back into Lucy's world, but every time she makes another attempt, Lucy backlashes her with bitter words of resentment. Beka's dad --- the strong, stable, committed man that he is --- tries to protect his family from erupting work problems that threaten his financial stability and reputation. But Beka sees through her father's calm façade and tries to shoulder some of his burden as well. Meanwhile, Beka's best friend Lori continues to wrestle with her own family troubles as her adopted parents attempt to work through an ongoing marriage crisis.
Add school with the revenge-seeking Mai and a controversy involving Beka's music teacher and her song of choice, and Beka is reeling under the pressure. From every angle, Beka has something or someone needing her help, support or advice. So where does Beka go for recharging? Surprisingly, she finds a friendly and understanding voice in Gabby, her dad's fiancée. Beka's counselor offers additional wise counsel, as do a few Christian friends from church.
When all is said and done, Beka realizes that everyone needs "backup," God provides exactly what is needed, and life is seldom without some sort of difficulty --- although there's still something worthwhile even amidst the hardships.

Beka just gets better!.......2006-07-24
The fifth and final book in the Becoming Beka Series covers Beka Madison's senior year and the life-changing decisions she must make. What will she do after graduation? Should she pursue a music career in L.A. or attend college closer to home? And most importantly, is Mark or Josh the one for her?
Beka is concerned about her family, too. Her younger sister, Lucy, is running with the wrong crowd and Beka is worried about her. She has become withdrawn and refuses to listen to Beka's advice. Mai continues to be Beka's enemy in spite of Beka's determination to pray for her. And Beka has to get used to the idea of her widowed father getting married again. But in every area of her life, Beka seeks God's wisdom and guidance.
Sumpolec knows teenagers, and her characterizations are true-to-life. I quickly became involved with Beka's aspirations and emotions. Evocative descriptions and realistic dialogue combine to make the reader feel "there" in the story. I'm looking forward to seeing what Sarah Anne Sumpolec has in mind as an encore for her readers after her successful Beka series.
Enjoyed it.......2006-04-21
The Encore is book five in the Beka series. It is Beka's senior year, and she wants it to be great, but everything seems to go wrong. Mrs. Brynwit, the school principal, hates the song she wrote for a school assignment, because it mentions God. Mai, an avowed enemy, wants Beka's job as editor of the school newspaper, and will do anything to get it. Lucy, Beka's younger sister, is running with a rough crowd and refuses to listen to her big sister's advice. Beka's mother died two years ago and her father is getting married again. Mark, a fellow senior, says he loves her, but refuses to talk about anything serious, and Josh, who is away at college just wants to be friends. And then there's God. What does he want from her?
The Encore captures what it's like to be young, insecure, and undecided. Beka doesn't seem like a character in a book, she seems like the teenager in your own family, as she tries to be everything to everyone, and ends up feeling like a failure. How can you have all the answers when you don't even know all the questions? Buy this one for your teenage daughter. She'll love it.
Loved It! .......2006-04-10
Beka Madison us a gifted musician who is struggling with what to do after graduation, what to do about her love life, and how to deal with her father's upcoming marriage and subsequent move from the house she's lived in her entire life. As her Senior year draws to a close, Beka must finally decide where her life is headed.
As for what to do after graduation...does she stay close to home and go to college or does she move across the country to go after a music career and attend school part-time? If she moves across the country, she'll leave everything that's familiar to live with relatives of her father's fiance, but she'll also be closer to Josh.
As for the love life...first, there was Mark. Mark is every girl's dream. He's handsome and athletic and knows just what to say to make Beka feel like a princess. Josh is older and away in Seatle in college. He's more interested in taking things slowly and taking the relationship where God leads. Mark's approach is more exciting and makes her heart beat a little faster, but it just doesn't feel right.
Then there's her father and Gabie, her soon-to-be stepmom. It's been barely two years since Beka's mom passed away and Beka is still clinging to her memory. Gabie does her best to help, but Beka can't seem to unlock her heart.
As graduation draws closer, Beka knows she must make some life altering decisions. Does she sign the record contract and move to the other side of the country? It will put her closer to Josh, but further from her father and her siblings. Is she ready to be that far away from her family?
Sumpolec tackles Beka's decisions with Godly guidance and the struggle Beka faces with earthly temptation. It's a wonderful conclusion to a wonderful journey through Beka's life.

Never Goodbye!.......2006-03-21
The mailman brought my copy of The Encore, and I couldn't wait to dive in! What happens in the fifth and final episode of Becoming Beka? Eighteen year old Beka is torn between two loves; someone targets her for revenge; family dynamics heat up; and an unexpected twist catches Beka and the reader by surprise. Author Sarah Sumpolec doesn't tie up Beka's life in a neat package, but a strong message of God's hope lingers. Beka can't wait to see God's plan unfold, and I can't either. I hope that's why the author kept the door cracked for future possibilties. Maybe we won't have to say goodbye after all!

Book Description
This collection of novellas will delight readers with stories of love showing up in the most unexpected places: a couple thrown together at the airport when their flights are cancelled; two violinists competing for first chair during a European orchestra tour; and a missionary to Russia unexpectedly running into her old boyfriend when he gets stuck in an elevator.
Customer Reviews:
Six stars..........2007-06-27
Three wonderful tales of life, love and the Lord by three very gifted authors. A wonderful anthology!
"Will and a Way" by Elizabeth White is an uplifting story about God working out His plan perfectly in His own time. Will and Zoe knew each other in college. He was dating her roommate. Now, they've bumped into each other in the airport and realized that they have a lot - including a love of the Lord - in common. Can they face their pasts and fears to have a happily ever after? Although an enjoyable story, it ended rather abruptly, almost leaving the reader with the feeling that there was more to come...
Kathleen Fuller's "Encore, Encore" is the thoroughly satisfying tale of Annika, a violinist and concertmaster in her orchestra. She's worked hard for her position and the solo she will perform during her last concert tour with the institute. When their conductor is severely injured, Annika's unpleasant "ex" assumes the baton and promptly replaces Annika as concertmaster with Josef, a famous virtuoso, and takes away the solo she's worked so hard for. In spite of this, Annika and Josef are drawn to each other. So, when Annika's "ex" threatens to send her home if Josef continues to see her outside of the concert hall, their growing love is threatened.
"Measure of a Man" by Susan May Warren is the story of Calli, a missionary to Russia, and her former beau, Peter. They pledged their lives to Christ and missionary work together, but pressure from his father led Peter to law school and out of Calli's life. Now, a lumber deal for his father's company has brought Peter to Russia. But the bigger picture shows that, although Peter may have lost track of God, the Lord had not forgotten Peter. The opening elevator scene in this book was awesome! I love Susan May Warren. She always touches my heart and entertains me.
Misses the Mark.......2004-03-31
A collection of three novellas by three different authors - perhaps to be enjoyed by those who most like their Christianity in a nice neat little box? Somewhat silly and unrealistic but with some interesting details, all with strong evangelical fundamentalist undertones and characters who are mighty quick to don their cloak of righteousness. Misunderstandings and bickering abound, and the "feminine love interest" in two of the stories actually strikes out physically. I struggled with the rigidity and hostility. There is little gentleness or grace - but rather there IS a high level of spoon-fed "belief."
So, perhaps I should just avoid "Christian Romance" entirely? Well, if there had been any hint on the cover of this collection, I might have done exactly that. But I did bother to read these (bother being the key word?) and would instead refer the gentle reader to the fiction of Frederick Buechner, Jan Karon and Philip Gulley. For me this collection missed the mark.

THREE HEARTFELT NOVELLAS BRING US PEACE AND LOVE.......2003-10-25
These three accomplished authors tell a tale each of how God can indeed bring about true love all through hardship and in the case of Elizabeth White and Susan May Warren laughter. Kathleen Fuller's story is one of intrigue and deep emotion. I recommend this book highly to anyone who seeks a soul-searching and warm love story.
5 Stars for MEASURE OF A MAN!.......2003-02-21
Susan Warren's offering, Measure of a Man, is wonderful! Endearing characters and a page-turning plot, romance at its very best and a precious message neatly woven in. I can't wait to read more by this incredible new author!
What Christian Fiction Should Be.......2003-02-08
I really enjoyed this book. The stories are easy to read and enjoyable. My favourite story by far was the last one, "Measure of a Man" by Susan May Warren. This story is, in my opinion, exactly what Christian fiction should be. This is no small thing since it has been my experience that all too often Christian fiction lacks so much of what is supposed to make it Christian fiction. Measure of a Man is absolutely chock-full of truth. It isn't just a story about the lives of people who happen to be Christians and say little one-line prayers now and then, it's a story that teaches the reader more about God's character and causes them to grow, something that even the first two stories, though enjoyable, fail to do in my opinion. It's a story that is so full of truth and encouragement that it can minister even to mature Christians, as well as non-Christians or seekers. The author does a great job of making the story line believable and the development of the romance realistic in a very short amount of time. This again is no small feat as it is something many romance writers (both Christian and non-Christian) seem to have trouble achieving. The story line is high paced and intriguing, and has elements of suspense, mystery, tragedy, and comedy as well as romance. One of the things that really set this story apart from others is the unique writing technique employed by the author. The story outlines both the heroines' and the heros' perspective on certain issues, giving unique insight into the differences between the way men and women view the same things. This serves to remind women readers that men see us and our beauty very differently than we see ourselves. I find this technique to be very insightful, healthy and encouraging for women, especially in today's society. In addition to everything else, this story is very well written, something which is unfortunately not always the case with Christian fiction. In my opinion, this story is a contender with any non-Christian fiction of its class, and I definitely recommend it. And the really great thing is that apparently this story is the first published work by Susan May Warren, something that means any future works by her are sure to only get better!
