      Book Description

Edna Ferber’s classic paean of love to the Mississippi River and the showboats that ran up and down it is once again available in hardcover as a facsimile of the first edition. First published in 1926, this timeless tale of the Cotton Blossom, Cap’n Andy, his shrewd wife Parthy, and their beautiful daughter Magnolia her remarkable daughter Kim was made famous on Broadway in 1927, when the legendary Jerome S. Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II collaborated on the musical. Since then it has become a beloved favorite, revived repeatedly to entertain generations with haunting and lyrical songs such as “Old Man River” and “Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man of Mine.”

      4 out of 5 stars no title.......2005-11-19

Really good book; fast reading, engrossing. Blend of historical fact about show boats and Chicago, and fictional romance novel. Particularly detailed about Chicago. Grabbed me in the first few pages. Ferber's characters are very expertly and fully drawn, even if they were somewhat caricatured. Strong, strong women; mostly weak, but charming men. For those times, she shows great sympathy for the negro race. Ferber could flat-out write an an engaging tale.

3 out of 5 stars Timeless Influence of THE RIVER.......2005-07-25

Ferber's timeless story of love, ambition and family dynamics remains as compelling today as when it first appeared in 1926. Providing an imperious yet insidious backdrop for the three main female characters, the mighty Mississippi River exerts its curiously compelling influence in the lives of Mother and Daughter, while the granddaughter remains indifferent to its fluid appeal. Yet the role of the theatre and the lure of the stage entice three generations of women related to Captain Andy.

Andy Hawks, past amateur actor and avid riverboatman,
braves his wife's horror and flounts her Puritannical authority by purchasing the Cotton Blossom--a floating theatre which plays to a variety of audiences in river towns all along the Mississippi and its tributaries. With childish delight he refurbishes the boat and assembles both a crew to run her and a troupe of actors to perform on the fluid, yellow trail. Prim and stern Parthy, his New England school-marmish wife, is scandalized but gradually succumbs to the charm of ruling the galley and becoming housekeeper-not to mention keeper of the Morals for the ungrateful members of the troupe. Reluctantly over the decades, she grows to revel in her new role as successful businesswoman. Despite lack of deep love for her dead husband, she maintains his dream, as does his only daughter, Magnolia.

The story opens with the birth of tiny Kim Ravenal, named for her proximity to three states, but successive chapters are entirely devoted to flashbacks which serve as detailed exposition. Ferber's use of time (both backward and forward) is as fluid as the milieu in which ten-year old Magnolia revels. Never so comfortable as on her father's floating home and theatre, Magnolia proves "truly splendid" when she enjoys a long-delayed Homecoming.

Each mother has trouble with her daughter, since two generations can trace certain traits and talents from unyielding Parthenia Ann Hawks, who even resisted the advance of Death-- the Conqueror. Presenting a kaleidoscope of family relations SHOWBOAT depicts Magnolia and her father's childlike conspiracy for joy; Magnolia's ultimate defiance of her mother; Kim's acting in loco parentis for her own mother, both as a young girl and later as a successful actress. Three marriages are paraded before readers, who are left to choose which one reveals the most tenderness and love.

Magnolia Hawks Ravenal grows to maturity after she leaves the
safe environment of the Cotton Blossom, as she proves a steadfast and loving wife and mother. She comes of age when she realizes that home is truly where her heart has always belonged.
A captivating read for everyone 16 and up.

      5 out of 5 stars A Neglected Classic.......2003-04-06

Although she is somewhat neglected today, for more than three decades Edna Ferber was considered one of America's premiere authors. While her work included short stories and theatre, she was most famous for her novels, most of which focused on strong women coping with errant men in panoramic settings. SHOW BOAT was one of her first great successes. Today the story is better known through its musical theatre incarnation and the two film versions the stage show generated, one in 1936 directed by James Whale and starring Irene Dunne and one in the 1951 directed by George Sidney and starring Katherine Grayson. But while the stage and screen versions have their charms, none really captures the epic nature of Ferber's novel, which is as much about America as it is about the story of post-Civil War show folk who ply their trade on "The Cotton Blossom"--a floating theatre that travels the nation's waterways, most particularly the mighty Mississippi.

The story concerns three generations of women: Parthenia Hawks, a ram-rod upright New Englander who heartily disapproves of her husband's decision to purchase a show boat and involve the family with actors, God forbid; her daughter Magnolia, whose fresh beauty eventually propells her fame as one of the most popular actresses on the river; and her granddaughter Kim, who becomes a Broadway star. But the backbone of the story concerns Magnolia's ill-fated love for ne'er-do-well gambler Gaylord Ravenal, a love that tests her strength to the last degree. Just as Magnolia has to change to meet her constantly shifting circumstances, so is the nation changing around her, gradually shifting from a rather innocent, rural society to a much more hardened and sophistocated urban world. And Magnolia's adventures will take her from the savage natural beauty of the mighty Mississippi to the gambling dens and brothels of 'Gilded Age' Chicago to the jumpiness of the 1920's 'Great White Way' of New York.

Ferber was more of a popular than a literary writer, and her style here is very much of the 1910s and 1920s--but her prose is strong and clean, her imagery is magnificent, and as she tells her episodic story of a life and a nation in transition she weaves a number of interesting threads into the tapestry: the poverty of the beaten South, racial oppression, social caste, hypocrisy, and changing tastes in fashion and art. And always, always there is the great river: indifferent to the humanity that clings to its banks and travels its back, by turns placid and savage, graceful and dangerous. Ultimately the river becomes a metaphor for both the rapid changes in America and for the often dangerous power of love, and unlike the stage and film versions there will be few happy endings for the characters as they are swept through life's torrent very much as the Cotton Blossom is swept along the currents. It is a memorable package, and while Ferber would go on to write a great many other novels (including the famous GIANT), SHOW BOAT is perhaps her single best work. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Neglected, Often Surprising and Subversive Masterpiece About Strong Mothers and Daughters.......2002-10-17

The popularity of the Kern-Hammerstein musical, academia's refusal to include the work in the "canon" of regularly-taught American novels, the popular assumptions about the novel's datedness, sentimentality and racial stereotypes--these are some of the factors that have contributed to the comparative neglect of one of the most original, engaging narratives by an American novelist.

The so-called "modernist" tradition is one that casts suspicion upon any narrative that might be termed "melodramatic" in its plotting, tone and style. It's true that Ferber plays out the emotions of her characters, but she's equally adept at keeping those emotions in play. Her voice is so vital and strong, her narrative so multilayered in its social-psychological-cultural-archetypal meanings, that an open-minded reader cannot fail to become swept up in the force of her storytelling. Moreover, in her characterization of Magnolia, who defends her unstable marriage against her daughter's staid one and who prefers the tenderloin districts to the churches and parks of Chicago, Ferber reveals the subversiveness of a true artist, making the reader question common assumptions about the dual gods of "success" and "progress."

The river and the theater are not only Ferber's favorite settings but her metaphors for exploring the life of consciousness and explaining the forces that shape personality. Even when Gaylord and Magnolia abandon the river and take up residence in Chicago, the river lives in them, exposing by its constantly-felt presence what is alive and dead, what is enduring and transitory. Magnolia's daughter and her husband, the "new" American theater of New York, the "reformed" Chicago--all these are condemned less in the surface narrative than in the energy Ferber brings to the subjects that are closer to her heart: characters and places whose life traces its wellsprings to the river.

This is melodrama ("music drama') in the best sense of the word--Ferber's prose evoking the musical elements that invest the narrative with fullness and necessity. The African-American spirituals and folk songs that provide Magnolia's education in turn inform the reader of her values and understandings through the course of her life's journey. Moreover, the narrative's movement matches the river's: it creates unexpected channels, moving forward in time, then backward, a device that enables the narrative to provide a perspective on the past as something familiar, as a place we already know and treasure, a "spot of time" we've been missing and to which we wish to return.

But the melodrama also works here because Ferber constantly blurs the line between theater and life, letting us in on the "backstage" action that goes into playing a role and preparing a face. Magnolia blossoms only when she is on the stage, and Gaylord is never closer to authenticity than when he becomes an actor long enough to woo and marry Magnolia. Because Ferber presents her characters as deliberately assuming melodramatic parts, we don't see them as stereotypes as much as fellow beings taking on the roles required of us all to deal with life's changes as symbolized by the river.

The musical version has a happy ending, with no deaths, no permanent damage. The sentiments in Ferber's original, on the other hand, are at once higher and deeper--equal parts elegy, stoicism, endurance, resolve. Ferber's last sentence describing Magnolia is a replication of an earlier sentence describing her mother: "The river, the show boat, the straight silent figure were lost to view." By this time Ferber's words have become such an integral part of the reader's consciousness that there's little chance any of these three images will be lost to view.

      1 out of 5 stars Show Boat.......2000-09-03

My mother gave me this book because I like to read "trashy romance novels". This book sucked. I detested Magnolia's mother. I hated the racial slurs. The husband was a royal bastard. And the daughter treated Magnolia like a simpleton! But what can I say, she was close to it. Magnolia had no real personality and absolutely no backbone whatsoever. Although she was sweet and I admired how much the loved the river and the theater I could barely stand her at certain times in the novel. I had to force myself to finish the book. Although many of you may disagree with me and certainly the other people who gave reviews do. But I have a right to my opinion and decided that what I thought of this book should be up here to warn off others.

Subtitled The Broadway Musical from "Show Boat" to Sondheim, Geoffrey Block's book concerns itself with the creative process that made hits out of 14 musical comedies, such as Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady, rather that just interpreting the impact of the finished projects. Block is adept at demonstrating how musical themes are used by the witty composers to tell or buttress the stories in subtle ways; there seem to be as many passages of sheet music recreated in the pages as there are photos. The book leans more heavily on scholarly analysis than others in the genre, but many of the insights and examples are developed here in print for the first time. Especially fascinating are the sections on the development of beloved numbers that went from ideas to hits, such as "Bess, You Is My Woman Now" in Porgy and Bess and "Bianca" in Kiss Me Kate.

      Book Description

The classic musicals of Broadway can provide us with truly enchanted evenings. But while many of us can hum the music and even recount the plot from memory, we are often much less knowledgeable about how these great shows were put together. What was the inspiration for Rodgers and Harts Pal Joey, or Rodgers and Hammersteins Carousel? Why is Marias impassioned final speech in West Side Story spoken, rather than sung? Now, in Enchanted Evenings, Geoffrey Block offers theatre lovers an illuminating behind-the- scenes tour of some of the best loved, most admired, and most enduring musicals of Broadways Golden Era. Readers will find insightful studies of such all-time favorites as Show Boat, Anything Goes, Porgy and Bess, Carousel, Kiss Me, Kate, Guys and Dolls, The Most Happy Fella, My Fair Lady, and West Side Story. Block provides a documentary history of fourteen musicals in all--plus an epilogue exploring the plays of Stephen Sondheim--showing how each work took shape and revealing, at the same time, production by production, how the American musical evolved from the 1920s to the early 1960s, and beyond. The book's particular focus is on the music, offering a wealth of detail about how librettist, lyricist, composer, and director work together to shape the piece. Drawing on manuscript material such as musical sketches, autograph manuscripts, pre-production librettos and lyric drafts, Block reveals the winding route the works took to get to their final form. Block blends this close attention to the nuances of musical composition and stagecraft with trenchant social commentary and lively backstage anecdotes. Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, the Gershwins, Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Kurt Weill, Frank Loesser, Leonard Bernstein, Sondheim, and other luminaries emerge as hardworking craftsmen under enormous pressure to sell tickets without compromising their dramatic vision and integrity. Opening night reviews and accounts of critical and popular response to subsequent revivals show how particular musicals have adapted to changing times and changing audiences, shedding light on why many of these innovative shows are still performed in high schools, colleges, and community theaters across the country, while others, such as Weills One Touch of Venus or Marc Blitzsteins The Cradle Will Rock, languish in comparative obscurity. Packed with information, including a complete discography and plot synopses and song-by-song scenic outlines for each of the fourteen shows, Enchanted Evenings is an essential reference as well as a riveting history. It will deepen readersappreciation and enjoyment of these beloved musicals even as it delights both the seasoned theater goer and the neophyte encountering the magic of Broadway for the first time.

3 out of 5 stars This author knows music but not theatre.......2005-12-11

Block clearly knows his music theory, but he doesn't really understand musical theatre in any serious way. If you want some college music theory analysis of some show tunes, you might like this -- if you want insights into musical theatre, you won't get much of value here. And more than that, he appears to be one of those who believes musicals today all suck and only the old-fashioned ones have any value. All in all, not a great book...

4 out of 5 stars Review of Geoffrey Block's 'Enchanted Evenings'.......1998-01-29

The contents of this book are very thorough, complete, and factual. The subject is very interesting, but if you don't understand music, he is sometimes hard to follow. He was my professor and this was a class text. Without his oral interpretation, I was, at times, left wondering what he meant. The book is filled with great pictures and original score. If your interested in how musicals are created, definately read this book.

      5 out of 5 stars Show Boat.......2005-09-25

This coffee-table sized book was published in 1977 to commemorate the 50th anniversay of the opening of the Florenz Ziegfeld production of SHOW BOAT, with music and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and Jerome Kern. It is not just an entertaining diversion for fans of the show or musical theatre in general, but a serious study and commentary of Edna Ferber's book (upon which the show is based), the original 1927 Broadway production, the first 1929 Hollywood movie version, the 1936 Universal movie version, and the 1951 MGM version. Kreuger is not afraid to be critical (he believes the 1936 movie is the best Hollywood rendition because it follows the original play the closest, while the 1951 movie is the worst because of "its largely inappropriate cast, its musical mutilation, its humorless script, and its empty Technicolored fripperies"). Complete cast listings, a list of regional productions, and a selected discography are included, along with scores of photographs. A very handsome book about a supreme example of the American Musical, a delight for the eye as well as the mind.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best musical theatre books available.......2003-12-13

I have had this remarkable book ever since it was first published back in 1977, to mark the 50th anniversary of "Show Boat"'s opening on Broadway. It is criminal that it has been allowed to slip out of print not once, but twice--in its original edition and in its expanded, updated edition as well.

Perhaps the reason for this is the current trendy emphasis on political correctness. The original stage production, and every American stage production until 1946, used the "n" word several times both in the lyrics and dialogue when referring to black people. (The word was not used in the film versions of the show.) But ever since 1946, both Hammerstein and public taste demanded that this word be expunged from the show. Author Miles Kreuger makes a strong case that the use of the "n" word was not an example of insensitivity; to Kreuger it was Hammerstein's way of being brutally honest about the way blacks were treated in the 19th century South. But perhaps some readers refused to recognize the validity of Kreuger's point.

This book was, as far as I know, the very first book to ever devote itself to analyzing and documenting the history of one Broadway musical. It is clear that author Miles Kreuger deeply reveres "Show Boat", and that he considers it perhaps the most important American musical stage work ever written. The research he has done for this book is staggering. Not only does he include a chapter-by-chapter description of Edna Ferber's original novel, he also includes a scene-by-scene description of the musical, as well as an extremely detailed description of the long unseen 1929 part-talkie film version of Ferber's original novel (illustrated profusely with stills from the film), and a detailed description of the classic 1936 film version of the stage musical (also illustrated profusely with stills). There is detailed information on the writing and staging of the first production, an entire chapter devoted to the now forgotten, and much sanitized post-World War II Broadway revival (staged in 1946),as well as appendices containing cast lists for Broadway, London, regional, and film versions of the show, including which songs were omitted and/or retained. In short, this book gives you the works, and is close to the last word on "Show Boat".

And Kreuger is a strongly opinionated author, who is not afraid to show his preferences. Although he was not born long ago enough to have seen them, to him the 1927 and 1932 stage productions are the most memorable versions of the show, because they most closely reflect Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II's original concept for it. Up through the date in which this book was published, no subsequent Broadway revival, according to Kreuger, had ever lived up to or surpassed those first two Broadway stagings, and Kreuger considers the 1936 film version of "Show Boat" one of the finest Hollywood treatments of a Broadway musical classic.

Conversely, Kreuger is absolutely merciless in his withering criticism of the much-loved and much revived M-G-M 1951 Technicolor film of "Show Boat" (with Kathryn Grayson, Ava Gardner and Howard Keel), detailing its almost total disregard for Kern and Hammerstein's intentions, its alteration of some of the song arrangements as well as some of the story, its near-total abandonment of Hammerstein's dialogue, and its flagrant watering down of the show's most dramatic moments to fit what he calls "the M-G-M mold" (i.e., a musical that avoids controversy). He scoffs at some of the casting choices, except for the choice of Howard Keel as Ravenal, Joe E. Brown as Cap'n Andy, and William Warfield as Joe. And he leaves us with the feeling that anyone who loves the 1951 film has no idea of what a production of "Show Boat" should be like or has never been exposed to the original musical.

This book may annoy some, but it is essential reading for theatre students and lovers of musicals. It has been highly influential, prompting both EMI's complete , "authentic", excellent 1988 recording of the score and Harold Prince's 1994 stage revival. It should be brought back into print and kept in print.

              Book Description

Proper decorum has never come easily to Carlotta Anne Fairleigh—not even tonight, when the lovely, impetuous miss is finally making her debut. As she waits to make her entrance, she can't help wondering about the darkened house next door, the supposedly abandoned home of Hayden St. Clair, the man society has dubbed the "Murderous Marquess." Certainly one small peek through his window before the festivities would be harmless . . .

And, naturally, this latest "adventure" ends in disaster, thoroughly compromising the budding debutante's reputation and leaving her suddenly, unthinkably . . . betrothed! Soon she's en route to the wilds of Cornwall in the company of the handsome, mysterious marquess whose name the ton whisper with fear and loathing.

Yet there is something thrilling—and surprisingly tender—about her dark, unreachable groom, and the desire in his eyes is undeniable. But before Lottie will surrender to the yearnings in her heart, she must unlock the secrets of Hayden's past, no matter how scandalous—or perilous—they may be.

4 out of 5 stars Very well written story.......2007-08-29

This story has a nice plot weaved into it. I enjoyed its mystery and ghost storylike charms. This was my first Medeiros book and I willl probably read others as I enjoyed this and finished it in 3 1/2 hrs by the pool.

3 out of 5 stars Not Very Enjoyable.......2007-05-17

I have been reading as many of Medeiros books as I can find. Some have been really good, and with humor to the story, others have been kind of odd.
This one was kind of on the dull side. Too much time was spent going over and over the first wife and how upset she was. Then more about the fact that she died. The daughter was just plain weird.

              Not impressed with this book.

              5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-05-18

              One Night of Scandal
              by: Teresa Medeiros
Reviewer: Pamela Ackerson (author Home of the Braves trilogy)
Teresa Medeiros is one of my favorite authors. As many books as I read, there may be a handful of authors that I actually remember. She is one of them. One Night of Scandal is about an adventuress debutante, Carlotta Fairleigh, and it did not disappoint me--passionate scenes that sizzle, with main characters that feel like real people, Ms. Medeiros makes you feel as if you are a fly on the wall, watching the story unfold before your eyes. Definitely one of those books you want to put in the shopping basket.

4 out of 5 stars Captivating historical filled with humor and passion.......2005-09-02

As a child Carlotta Fairleigh had earned the title "The Hertfordshire Hellion" for her madcap adventures. Now grown up, some things haven't changed. On the very night of her come out ball, Lottie discovers that the infamous Hayden St. Clair is residing in the house next door, but only for that night. Already wearing her ball gown and with guests due to arrive at any moment, Lottie is determined to get a glimpse of him. After all, what better inspiration could there be for an ardent reader and would-be author of gothic novels than to look upon the man whose wife had mysteriously died just months after he had killed one of his best friends in a duel defending her honor. Going out on a limb (literally), Lottie sneaks into his backyard and soon finds herself in the arms of the man known far and wide as the "Murderous Marquess."

Hayden St. Clair, Marquess of Oakleigh, is a man accustomed to being alone. For four and a half years he's been the subject of rumors and gossip and, on his last night in London, the last thing Hayden wants is company, even if it comes in a beautiful package. At first he assumes Lottie is a courtesan sent by his friend Ned, and is even tempted to sample the goods. By the time the truth comes out, however, the alarm has been raised for the missing Lottie, and the pair must face even more scandal or marriage. Desperate to keep her beloved guardian from facing the marquess in a duel, Lottie convinces Hayden that marriage is their only option. The newly married but not at all blissful couple head off to Oakwylde, his estate in Cornwall, for a head-on collision with the ghosts of Hayden's past and his willful ten-year old daughter.

ONE NIGHT OF SCANDAL is everything a reader wants a historical romance to be. It's poignant and tender with sparks of passion and humor. First introduced in A KISS TO REMEMBER, Lottie is all grown up and fulfills the promise she showed as a child. Her joie de vivre is exactly what Hayden needs to bring him out of the darkness his guilt and sorrow have sunk him in. One can empathize with Lottie in her determination to reach out to her stepdaughter Allegra, and to end the years of sadness that have shrouded Oakwylde. Given the wealth of characters in this blossoming series, readers can only hope that Teresa Medeiros will return over and over to this fascinating family and their friends. Be warned! Starting this book will most likely cause you to have a sleepless night, as it is almost impossible to put down.

4 out of 5 stars Not A Kiss to Remember. . but still good.......2005-06-24

I was so incredibly excited to get my hands on One Night of Scandal after having read A Kiss to Remember--which is, by the way, one of my favorite romance novels of all time. The novel (which, like one reviewer has already stated, is more of a companion than a sequel to the first) started out brilliantly. Lottie's fall from grace and the disastrous results that ensue, as well as the reintroduction of familiar, loveable characters seemed too delicious to be true, but I must say, once she is borne off to the "end of creation" (Cornwall), the story's pacing seriously slows. Allegra and the whole ghost-story-dead-wife-gone-insane intrigue is tolerable, but there isn't any excuse for the lack of romance and character development between Hayden and Lottie. I mean, if you really think about it, the novel was mostly from Lottie's point of view, and even when you've reached the end of the story, you still feel as if Hayden is a perfect stranger. You don't quite sympathize with him like you did for Sterling in AKtR; you don't indentify with his mysteriousness and brooding; the sporatic conversations between him and Lottie are strangely empty and out of place, and the passionate groping somehow sprung up out of nowhere. In AKtR, there was no way in avoiding the sex that occured between two characters who were perfectly obsessed with each other, whereas, the sex in ONoS could almost have been deemed unnecessary. However, I found many positive things in this novel, such as the sweet mother-daughter relationship between Lottie and Allegra, even if it did take away a little (okay, alot) of the romance, as well as other heartfelt, humorous moments. I also thought it had a powerful ending that struck a chord, so I suppose you could say it was the beginning and ending that mostly made this book for me. I finished it with a smile on my face. Though the steaminess doesn't come even close to the first book, and the story lags in places when it easily couldn't have, I recommend this to any fan of Teresa Medeiros (God bless this woman), especially if you enjoyed reading AKtR.
BTW, did anyone else catch the historical inaccuracy in which Beethoven is made out to already have died? The story takes place in 1825; Beethoven didn't die until 1827. ^_^
