Young Robert's dreams have taken a decided turn for the weird. Instead of falling down holes and such, he's visiting a bizarre magical land of number tricks with the number devil as his host. Starting at one and adding zero and all the rest of the numbers, Robert and the number devil use giant furry calculators, piles of coconuts, and endlessly scrolling paper to introduce basic concepts of numeracy, from interesting number sequences to exponents to matrices. Author Hans Magnus Enzensberger's dry humor and sense of wonder will keep you and your kids entranced while you learn (shhh!) mathematical principles. Who could resist the little red guy who calls prime numbers "prima donnas," irrational numbers "unreasonable," and roots "rutabagas"? Not that the number devil is without his devilish qualities. He loses his temper when Robert looks for the easy way out of a number puzzle or dismisses math as boring and useless. "What do you expect?" he asks. "I'm the number devil, not Santa Claus." (Ages 10 to adult) --Therese Littleton

Book Description

The international best-seller that makes mathematics a thrilling exploration. In twelve dreams, Robert, a boy who hates math, meets a Number Devil, who leads him to discover the amazing world of numbers: infinite numbers, prime numbers, Fibonacci numbers, numbers that magically appear in triangles, and numbers that expand without . As we dream with him, we are taken further and further into mathematical theory, where ideas eventually take flight, until everyone-from those who fumble over fractions to those who solve complex equations in their heads-winds up marveling at what numbers can do.Hans Magnus Enzensberger is a true polymath, the kind of superb intellectual who loves thinking and marshals all of his charm and wit to share his passions with the world. In The Number Devil, he brings together the surreal logic of Alice in Wonderland and the existential geometry of Flatland with the kind of math everyone would love, if only they had a number devil to teach it to them.

4 out of 5 stars New Math Again.......2007-10-05

My son refused to look at this when he saw the title had Number in it, so I began reading it to my daughter instead. Soon he was listening intently and then asking to see the pictures or diagrams. The book doesn't teach how to do math, but more the logical constants of math. Numbers become predictable friends instead of tricky foes. Because it pits the boy against the devil, it appeals to boys competitive spirit. And you can go back to chapters again and again to gain a deeper understanding without getting bored. The practical applications of what they are doing with numbers are a little harder to grasp in this book, but it is a fun read.

This is a fabulous novel all about numbers: their history, their use, and their mystery! It is a must read! :)

1 out of 5 stars boring.......2007-08-05

Unfortunately, my daughter says this is a yawn. It is informative but very boring. She says it tries to be creative and make math fun, but it is "not fun."

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-03-11

My 9 year old read this book and then extended her borrowing time so that I could also read it. I enjoyed the format with each chapter being based on one of his dreams.

I think the book can open kids' eyes open to the relevance of numbers and mathematics. It's engaging and funny.

5 out of 5 stars Students love this book!.......2007-02-12

My 6th grade math-hating students, the students who struggle with math and have little number sense, love hearing this book while drawing reflections and using calculators to crunch the numbers. They are starting to look at numbers in a new way.

Book Description

The twelve billion dollar cruise-ship industry caters to 10 million Americans annually on six- hundred million dollar floating cities.

In this terrifically entertaining history, Kristoffer A. Garin chronicles the cruise-ship industry, from its rise in the early sixties, to its explosion in the seventies with the hit show The Love Boat, to the current vicious consolidation wars and brazen tax dodges. Entrepreneurial genius and bare-knuckle capitalism mate with cultural kitsch as the cruise lines dodge U.S. tax, labor, and environmental laws to make unimaginable profits while bringing the world a new form of leisure.

A colorful and compelling behind-the-scenes narrative, Devils on the Deep Blue Sea is a definitive look at the industry and its robber barons who created floating empires.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Perspective on the Cruise Business.......2007-09-17

I found this book to be a very enjoyable read. It takes you beyond the marketing collateral of the cruise lines to the full story behind the industry's birth and development. The book is a wonderful narrative of the industry's short and eventful life. The author is fairly even handed in his treatment but there are times when you can sense when he likes or dislikes his subjects.

The author's assessment of the cruise line labor policies, environmental record and negotiation with Caribbean Governments was slanted. His view comes off as wanting the cruise lines to be vehicles of social change rather than commercial enterprises. I think he fairly criticizes the cruise lines for not living up to their environmental rhetoric but if the labor conditions are so bad onboard the ships, why are the positions so prized? If the Caribbean Governments are being abused so badly in their deals with the cruise lines, why do they continue to build larger piers to accomodate more ships?

The best parts of this book deal with the business deals that created the cruise industry and the characters that were involved. I have cruised for years and reading this book gave me a better perspective on the strategies and coincidences that shaped the industry. A good read!

4 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2007-05-27

Travel agents and veteran cruisers alike will get a big kick out of this book.

It's a behind the scenes look that pulls no punches but manages to remain affectionate. Garin simply proves that you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. I certainly hope it doesn't discourage any non-cruisers from taking the plunge.

My favorite bit: Carnival's Meshulam Zonis' line, "A passenger is like a wet towel," which he illustrated by hand motions that wordlessly said, "First we squeeze them this way, then we squeeze them that way."

5 out of 5 stars War ships/tankers to cruise ships....Oh My!!!.......2007-04-25

In the first chapter, Garin writes of the last day on a cruise ship which any cruiser knows is every man, woman and child for themselves....no longer are passengers royalty but more like refugees! He captures the irony of the debarking day that has always made my family chuckle as we tell stories of things we see on that last day! E.g. one poor passenger's luggage broke open outside an elevator...not one steward or other crew member offered assistance....they walked right over his strewn belongings. Anyway, Garin knows cruises and gives a wonderful history of the makings/history of the cruise industry from its humble beginnings to the big business it is today (and the two major cruise lines left). I was particularly fascinated with the evolution of the ships themselves! This was an easy read (and if a portion got dry....I skimmed!). I am cruising in 17 days...will do so with even more appreciation for the experience!

5 out of 5 stars If your cruise reservation is non-refundable...don't read this book.......2007-02-06

I picked this up after enjoying his Harper's article "On the great Ukrainian bride hunt". His writing style and my interest in critical looks at the evolution and externalities of specific industries (a la Fast Food Nation) made this an amusing & informative read. And the long odds that I'd ever go on a cruise got even longer.

4 out of 5 stars An even treatment with a fascinating storyline..........2006-09-03

Being a vacationer who has been on numerous cruises, this book recommendation looked like a certain fit... Devils On The Deep Blue Sea by Kristoffer A. Garin. He does a very good job in revealing how the cruise industry works, and the forces that have shaped it along the way.

The story starts in the late 1950's, when the cruise industry was really nothing more than a way to transport passengers from one location to another. The rich often had a lavish experience, while the "steerage" passengers were cramped and confined to the lower decks with restrictions on where they could go and what they could do. But in both cases, it was still a case of traveling from point A to point B. The airline industry quickly made cruise ships obsolete for rapid travel, and the shipping lines were becoming a footnote in history. But a few people thought that cruising could become a destination in itself, a way to vacation, see other lands, and then return to where you started. But the appeal had to be broad, and the luxuries of first class had to extend to all the passengers. Thru visionaries, financial risks, and mergers, what we have today is a $13 billion dollar industry that is truly global in numerous aspects. But behind the glitter and glamour, there are some less appealing items of interest...

Garin talks about how the cruise industry is largely staffed by impoverished workers from third-world nations who sign on for low base wages and whatever tips come from passengers. To many of us, these base wages wouldn't even support poverty, but they are considerable in the countries where the workers come from. The hours and rules aboard ship are harsh, with 12 to 16 hour days with little time off the norm. The industry also pays little in the way of taxes due to their ship registration being out of country to take advantage of international treaties preventing retaliatory fees. The laws and rights of the United States are not always in play either, as the ship is actually foreign territory. And if that's not enough, many of the tourist destinations are unable to get additional fees from the industry to support their infrastructure, as the industry will threaten to pull out of the port and destroy their tourism. It can be capitalism at its worst...

Personally, this book was better than I expected. I thought it was going to be a muck-raking, "boycott cruises" diatribe, and one that I wouldn't necessarily agree with. But the balance between the story of the cruise lines and the less-savory parts of the industry was just about right. And even the "expose" part wasn't hypercritical. I came away understanding the abuses, but (in many cases) understanding both sides of the issues. And really, it's not much different than what most other industries would do in the same circumstances...

Yes, I'm still going to go on cruises, and I'll still enjoy them. But I'll be even more considerate of the staff that makes it all work, and more in awe of what it takes to pull off the experience, week after week after week...

But while he was gone on his travels, looking for God, Kate couldn't help herself, and began fiddling for her three children. For the love of music, Kate is willing to defy anyone who tries to stop her. From generation to generation, the gift and love of music cannot be stopped, and no Malone is immune from its spell.

5 out of 5 stars Vividly written and alive.......2002-12-06

This book is, along with P. F. Kluge's novel "Eddie and the Cruisers," possibly the best novel about what music means and where it comes from that I've read. The sense of time and place is unerringly evoked, the characters are simultaneously archetypal and idiosynchratic, and the overlap of both generations and musical styles makes a rich, rewarding experience. Really, really top-notch stuff.

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2001-05-01

What a wonderful book. Quite often, a book is real good until the ending, and then I'm let down, But this has a really good ending too. This tale is really excellent: a verbal piece of art. I liked all the lineage and interconnections in this large musical family. I learned what it's like to have mucic within you -- to write as well as perform. I liked the character developments -- no one all good or all bad, but all very interesting. I recommend this book highly. One learns about US history, country music, human nature, and it's entertaining to boot!

      3 out of 5 stars Good Listen.......2000-03-25

I listened to a audio book of this. I don't think I would have had the patience to read the dialect but the readers (there were several involved - men and women) did a great job of speaking and singing more or less as the people in the book would have. It was a little long and repetitious but there are some great sequences.

3 out of 5 stars The Devils Dream an inspirering book.......1999-03-12

The Devils Dream describes beautifully the strength a dream of fame can have on a person. Katie Cocker is the main character once she is introduced you can clearly see that she struggles with life. Like many of our lives today, she deals with her obsessive parents and lost dreams. She wants to renew what her family has already started. Music is the way to do this. Each chapter in the book starts in a mew period of time from a different characters point of view. The book flows like this untill Katie is weaved into the story. The characters discussed before her are still around and are all a part of her family. Katie ties-up a legacy of music that has been brought down from generation to generation. Lee Smith keeps music flowing throughout the whole book. She almost uses it to much. She fits each paragraph with a lot of unwanted attention drawn toward the names and lyrics of songs. This all draws away from the story. The whole book is based on a dream of one day being famous and rich. Music is the step this enlarrged family thakes toward that dream. This book will cause a realization that dreams aren't something that can be fufilled with the click of a button but they must be worked at. This book can inspire people to strive toward their goals and dreams. If you don't enjoy music and the creation of it then don't read this book. If you need to be inspired then do.

4 out of 5 stars Good country music.......1999-01-11

This is another of Lee Smith's novels that progresses chronologically through generations, each successive generation represented through a group of narrators (like Oral History) and again her ability to delineate character through that character's voice is amazing. I really respect her as a writer and will keep reading her books until I have exhausted their availability. This time there are five generations of the country music industry, going from backwoods denizens of Grassy Creek who are downright suspicious of fiddle music, trusting no music but the "old hard high" hymns and progressing on down past the Grand Ole Opry to today. I have often made fun of the maudlin excesses of Nashville: when my adult son was a toddler, friends, my wife and I used to give the kid quarters to put in the jukebox in the St. Johnsbury diner to play "I'm Hiring a Wino to Decorate Our Home." (Evidently folks from the Academy where one friend worked did not come to the diner, and the regulars there seemed to think it was cute). Anyway, I was surprised by how affecting I found this book to be. Smith finds the real people behind "genuine country," or at least she creates an illusion that she has captured the actual personalities in their reactions to the hard-won petty triumphs and the terrible sudden tragedies and all the rest behind the sappy songs. I liked the book a lot and Smith obviously loved her subject, judging by the pages of acknowledgements at the end and her comments in them.

This book is a generous telling of Tela Starhawk Lake's life and training. She shares so much of her personal experience that it is at times painful to read. Very informative about the obstacles to continuing traditional Native practices in a modern world, and her profound determination to continue because of or in spite of those obstacles.

4 out of 5 stars Freaky owls, activism, and triumph over negativity.......2001-07-14

Since i am a Northwest transplant and OBSESSED with native american spirituality i was siked to read this book by a Yurok medicine woman. She gives some sorely needed insight into women's moontime ceremonies, herbs (ANGELICA!), and the meaning of some friendly and foelike animal spirits all over the country. Since i already fell in love with Sioux medicine people, my heart sang when she told of meeting Lame Deer and others, participating in a Sundance, and recieving full healing the Lakota way. I ate this book up.

5 out of 5 stars Hawk woman dancing with the moon was great !.......2000-07-02

I liked Hawk woman dancing with the moon a lot , because it tells you a lot about indian culture and also gives practical instructions if you're interested in moon-ceremonies , for example . Tela Star Hawk Lake talks about her own life (how she became a shaman , different ceremonies , her family ,...) , the life as an indian today and hundreds of years ago , her tribe and tells legends . All in all , I can really recommend this book to anyone that is interested in indian culture ! It's novel and informative book at the same time .

When he was a boy, Red Hawk spent a single afternoon with a beautiful, nymph-like girl. Now, years later, in the quest to free his people, he has tracked her down-and she could very well hold the key to break a centuries-old curse.

                5 out of 5 stars a spellbinding tale.......2007-07-13

According to lore many centuries ago a clan killed the children of the Thunder god. For their crimes, they were banished to a half existence in the land of mists. Once a generation, a brave is selected and given the opportunity to save his clan from the curse. Many have failed and been doomed to permanent separation from the rest of the Lost Clan. This generation an unlikely candidate is selected - an orphan who had been adopted into the clan when his parents were killed by the Thunderer. His name is Red Hawk.

As a child, Effie Rutledge adored her father and learned all about the study of archaeology from him. At the age of eight she first heard him talk about some amazing artifacts and the legend of the Lost Clan. The thought of people forced to live within the mists fascinates her and it's with a sense of awe that she takes on an all consuming interest in the Lost Clan and completing the project that her father had taken to heart - retrieving the four solid gold artifacts believed to hold the spirits of the children of the Thunder god.

Red Hawk first enounters Effie right after emerging from the mist. Barely more than a boy, he's mystified by her white skin and the bizarre clothing she wears. Effie has no idea that the boy she meets comes from the Lost Clan but she quickly becomes friends with him despite the fact that neither of them can understand each other. They frolic in the water hole until it's time for her to return to her parents. It'll be many years before they see each other again but neither of them is ever very far from the memory of the other. When they once again meet years later, Effie has taken over her father's project and Red Hawk has learned that there's a strong possibility that his and Effie's fates are to walk the same path. They're both searching for a way to free the Lost Clan, but trusting each other isn't going to be easy. They've both got secrets that they aren't willing to share and there's an undeniable sexual tension that has them both wondering `what if?' Will they find the other artifacts necessary to free his people? Can all of the people in Effie's excavation party be trusted? There are circumstances and occurrences that have Effie wondering who she can trust. Will Effie and Red Hawk's growing affection bring the wrath of the Thunder god and destroy the future of the Lost Clan?

Karen Kay tells a spellbinding tale with the third book in her `Lost Clan' series, RED HAWK'S WOMAN. This book contains fascinating characters, an ancient curse, Indian beliefs, suspense, and a fledgling love between the main characters that will have you reading late into the night. I loved the emotional appeal that Ms. Kay brings to Effie and Red Hawk's tale by combining their growing desire for each other with the need to save his clan from the mist. They're characters that you're drawn to and want to learn more about. What I didn't expect was the immense amount of respect I felt regarding Red Hawk and his devotion to finding a way to free his grandfather and the others from the mist - whether you believe the way he does or not is a moot point - you have to respect a man who won't back down from his own convictions.

RED HAWK'S WOMAN can be read as a stand alone, but you might find yourself drawn into this story enough to want to check out the other books in this series, I know I did. The other titles are THE SPIRIT OF THE WOLF and THE ANGEL AND THE WARRIOR.

4 out of 5 stars delightful Indian romantic fantasy .......2007-06-10

The Lost Clan tribal bands are cursed to live in the ephemeral realm between life and death because their ancestors killed four of Thunderer's children. Two days a year the Chosen One will live on the mortal plane as he is the tribe's only hope for them to escape the curse, but the crosser must perform a heroic sacrificial deed by the time he is thirty or the tribe remains locked in the shadows.

In 1848 during one of his trips onto the mortal plane the least likely Chosen One Red Hawk meets and is attracted to Effie Rutledge, but though time runs out on these two youngsters, neither forgot the other. Effie, a daughter of an archeologist, has made it her life's work to find four artifacts that she believes will free the Lost Clan and bring back Red Hawk to her. In 1866 Effie and Red Hawk meet again though she does not recognize the adult him as the star of her dreams. He panics as his time for being a hero is almost gone, which means never again seeing his beloved Effie. Together they search for a way for Red Hawk to complete his quest on time even as the gods try to prevent him from achieving his goal.

Moving on into the second half of the nineteenth century, Karen Kay keeps fresh her delightful Indian romantic fantasy even as the premise remains the same as the previous stories in her saga (see THE SPIRIT OF THE WOLF and THE ANGEL AND THE WARRIOR). Red Hawk is a strong protagonist tasting failure as his clock is running out yet also feels optimistic due to Effie although he also knows he may have give up love to save his Lost Clan. His desperation Hail Mary with his beloved assisting and keeping him safe from the wrath of Thunderer makes for an entertaining tale.

Wounded and on the run, he has no choice but to take beautiful Abby Wells hostage. After all, she's in danger, too. And if the only way to keep the fiercely independent communications expert safe is to cuff her and bring her along for the ride, he'll do it. With pleasure, even.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting Read From Beginning to End.......2007-07-09

ATF agent JT Hawk knows he has been set up by one of his own. As he flees trying to prove his innocence, he takes fellow agent Abby Wells along for the ride. He knows she is in danger also, but convincing her of that takes persuasion and proof on his part. Follow them on a very exciting journey!!

These are two very complicated, and likeable characters. They have great chemistry that will draw you from the beginning, and keep you interested throughout the entire book. The secondary characters Logan and Callen were very well written, and you end up rooting for them as much as you do Hawk and Abby. The mix of action, suspense, and romance makes this a very good read.

                  5 out of 5 stars A great read.......2007-06-11

Take one strongly capable male and one fiercely independent but completely feminine female, add some bad guys, suspense and intrigue, and then top it all off with smoldering sensuality and you've got the makings of SHADOW HAWK, the latest Blaze offering from the talented Jill Shalvis.

When a mission to recover over 300 rifles stolen from ATF storage goes to pieces while agent Abby Wells listens from a mobile communication center, she can't help but rush out into the action to see if she's needed. Abby was formerly active in the field herself, until an earlier mission went wrong and left her emotionally scarred. Someone within the agency is assisting the criminals, and as soon as Conner Hawk grabs her and forces her to go on the run with him, Abby thinks that he is the rogue agent and she is determined to escape him. When Hawk tells her that he suspects their director is involved, Abby is disbelieving, as the man who has raised Hawk's suspicions is the very man who rescued her several months before. Almost as quickly as Abby is convinced that Hawk's suspicions are true, the two have an incredibly passionate encounter that leaves both of them a little confused, yet wanting much more.

Hawk realizes that he has deeply frightened Abby by kidnapping her and that he's asking a lot in wanting her to believe him. He realizes that Abby's life is also in danger and that the race is on to find the true bad guy while fighting to keep them both alive. Hawk has always been attracted to Abby, but never dreamed that the two of them would actually get together. Hawk now needs to get Abby to drop her defenses so she can open herself up and accept his feelings for her.

Jill Shalvis has penned a fast-moving romantic suspense with intriguing lead characters that readers will quickly become attached to. Secondary characters are equally important and a sensual side romance is an added bonus. SHADOW HAWK is a bit of a change from the humorous, quirky characters that Jill Shalvis often gives her readers. Abby and Hawk aren't the light and fluffy characters you might associate with a Blaze. Each is dealing with serious issues; current dangers for Hawk and indescribable horrors in Abby's past, give this book the bones of an excellent suspense.

5 out of 5 stars a one sitting police procedural romantic suspense.......2007-06-11

In Wyoming ATF Agent Conner Hawk is attracted to fellow agent Abigail Wells, but she refuses to mix work with pleasure as her last assignment ended poorly because of that. She goes so far as to make Conner believe she loathes him though he cannot ascertain why.

However, personal feelings aside, they work together with other Feds on a raid that goes completely wrong leading to a massacre. They realize they were set up, but the agency believes Hawk sold them out in spite of his taking a bullet. He desperately tries to stay free and keep Abigail safe as he assumes she has to be eliminated as she knows too much. Thus until he can uncover the identity of the real culprit, he handcuffs Abigail to himself. She assumes she is his hostage; his gut insists he keep her out of harm's way.

The above is just the first few pages of a one sitting police procedural romantic suspense that hooks the audience the moment the lead couple is handcuffed together and never slows down until the final confrontation. This exhilarating thriller will blow away readers as Hawk and Wells battle one another and an unknown common enemy who wants him dead and she might be collateral damage; no witnesses.
