Spain has produced two books that changed world literature: Don Quixote and Lazarillo de Tormes, the first picaresque novel ever written and the inspired precursor to works as various as Vanity Fair and Huckleberry Finn. Banned by the Spanish Inquisition after publication in 1554, Lazarillo was soon translated throughout Europe, where it was widely copied. The book is a favorite to this day for its vigorous colloquial style and the earthy realism with which it exposes human hypocrisy.
The bastard son of a prostitute, Lazarillo goes to work for a blind beggar, who beats and starves him, while teaching him some very useful dirty tricks. The boy then drifts in and out of the service of a succession of masters, each vividly sketched and together revealing the corrupt world of imperial Spain. Its miseries are made all the more apparent by the candor and surprising good cheer with which young Lazarillo recounts his ever more curious fate.
This version of Lazarillo, by the prizewinning poet and translator W.S. Merwin, brings out the wonderful vitality and humor of this universal masterwork.

In all sincerity, I never really believe that a book in translation really carries the same message into a different language. I thought this book was fairly decent in this aspect. Before attempting this book, I would have to suggest to all "no se lo lee, si no se lo estudia."

I found this book very insightful. It is written by a woman who lost weight and has kept it off for a number of years. Victoria Moran's view of the other side of weight loss (maintenance) will be something I will revisit when I achieve that goal. This book is uplifting and down to earth.

The secret to losing weight is creating a program that you can stick with. This books reveals all of the things that you must do in order to lose weight and keep it off for life, most importantly of which is the ability to tune your mind to succeed.
Victoria includes several ideas that you can incorporate into your own unique program.
Read this book and highlight all of the ideas and solutions that you can use and refer back to the book as often as possible. I keep a copy of this book in my car and I read from it daily.

I love this book. It's not really a diet book but a book that teaches you to change your attitudes toward food, your body, and your life. I found it inspiring and I have read it over and over again. Victorian Moran writes in a heartfelt and clear way. A must read for overeaters and people who have issues with food.

I bought this book for a friend who has been struggling with her weight for years. The reason that I chose this book is because the theme that seems to ring loudly throughout is - LOVE THYSELF!!
This is not a diet book, or a fitness book in the traditional sense. It's a book that guides you to finding your inner joy FIRST. From this joy and acceptance, one learns to care for their bodies: embracing their accomplishments instead of beating themselves up for falling short of the "goal".
The title is true - these are simple secrets to change your body. They are completely do-able. From this simplicity, you can make lifetime changes...

I loved the book! How many times have we all wished to be swept off our feet and fall in love during the Regency London era! The story may not be credible but wishful thinking never hurt anyone! Made me wish to be the heroine in the novel!
a unusual time travel romance...........2006-03-15
I would have given this book more stars except that it is of those that unfortunately lag in the middle.
The book starts off wonderfully-I found it refreshing that unlike other time travel books-the hero and his sister realise early on that the young lady in the unusual garb IS from the future. They quickly deduce this by her clothing and the objects in her handbag while she is still unconscious. I love that-I get tired of the typical time travel where three fourths of the book is spent trying to get the character to accept that they went forward/backward in time.
The ending was very unusual and quite touching, and ends in a very lovely way-though I won't say more, don't want to spoil your surprise.
The love scenes are mild to moderate sensual-more explicit than your traditional regency, but less than some newer books.
As I mentioned earlier-the book is not perfect by any stretch but overall enjoyable enough that I would recommend it-though I wouldn't pay new price for it.

I purchased this book due to the author and the reviews it received. What a disappointment. The only reason I finished it was because I didn't want to just throw it out. Let me tell you - I should have just tossed it in the garbage!

Enjoyable Time Travel Romance.......2004-02-09
I did enjoy this book and agree with the other reviews. I read mostly regency-era historical romance, so I must say I think at times what it would be like to be transported to that time period. I liked all the characters and felt they were well developed. Liked the ending, it was unexpected. I agree that Maggie uses too much slang and it did not seem natural. It was almost like the character made too much emphasis on the speech differences and it made you think that Maggie could have blended in better if she even tried a little. Overall, it was a quick and enjoyable book.
Laughs and tears in a very amusing package........2003-10-04
This is the first time-travel novel I have ever read. As a Regency Romance avid reader, I have been wondering for a while what would happen if a 21st century woman was dumped into 19th century England. Yesterday & Forever was the answer to my questions, and much more.
To use one of Maggies own frases, this book had me in an emotional roller coaster all the time. I laughed, I felt sad for their imposible love and the ending (although a happy one) had me weeping like no other book before.
The only criticism I have for this book is that I think the author exagerated a little with the use of slang in Maggie's speech. It is not necessary to fill every sentence that falls from her mouth with curses and improper language to convey the idea that she is from this century. Also, at the beginning it was a little annoying the way Maggie was always fighting with Adam over anything, and calling him names like "male chauvinistic pig". I think it was most undeserved, since Adam was nothing but kind and a perfect gentleman with her and also was offering her his hospitality.
But this is not enough to spoil the enjoyment of a book that is otherwise just...wonderful.

One of Garlock's very best.......2002-11-21
I have read several of Dorothy Garlock's books and this is definitely one of her best. This is a romance set in the days of the American Wild West. The heroine, Victoria McKenna, is appalled to discover that her devious half-brother has illegally sold the family ranch, deeded to Victoria in their father's will, to the hero, Mason Mahaffey, and his rather large family of younger siblings. While awaiting the outcome of the legal dispute over the property, the Mahaffey's take up residence at the McKenna Ranch. They soon discover that the ranch is a resting spot for various vagrants,and possible criminals, all of whom are welcome to rest, lodge, and eat with no questions asked at the McKenna Ranch, a precedent set by the Victoria's deceased father to prevent getting gunned down. A relationship develops between the main hero/heroine couple of Victoria and Mason, as well as the extremely well depicted romance between Mason's sister Nellie and one of the vagrant cowboys,Sage, who has a secret troubled past. It was actually the secondary character's romance that was especially endearing and had me reading page after page to find out what would happen to them. The story has plenty of action and adventure,a nasty villain, as well as danger and mystery. A very good story with lots of fun, humor, and touching romance. A keeper.

I know I say this with each and every Dorothy Garlock book that I read... but this is the best one yet!!! I think this is my all time favorite book!!! I just couldn't put this book down!!!
Mason purchases Victoria's ranch from her brother, while in England. However, the ranch was not for her brother to sell, as it was left in a last minute will to Victoria. Nevertheless, Mason shows up with the right paperwork, and deed of sale - and the will Victoria has that her father made out before he died, hasn't been recorded until she brings it in to her lawyer's office. The will was witnessed by an employee at the ranch, and although it appears to be valid as well... Victoria and Mason must wait out the lawyer's research to find out who actually has the right to the property. Only both Victoria and Mason understand that possession is nine-tenths of the law, so Mason refuses to stay anywhere but the ranch until things are settled.
In the meantime, Mason brings his two sisters and three brothers to the ranch... which further upsets Victoria, watching her home be taken over by this big family. The family, determined to be together, and Victoria determined to be alone... all have some sacrifices to make.
It's a fun story to read, with these strangers being forced on each other... all trying to claim their legal property, but finding much more than a new home. That's not all to the story, like classic Garlock quality, the story is full of gunshot wounds, villians and outlaws, and danger lurking from all corners.

I loved this book. The first time I read it, I could not put it down until I was finished, and I have read it many times since. I think Ms. Garlock develops her characters well. I can almost see them when I read the book. Victoria is a very independent woman with a definite soft side. Mason is a world - weary guy who just wants to settle down. The children and their suffering (unfortunately) is very real. This was the first Dorothy Garlock book I read and went on to read as many others as I could find - all of which were wonderful.

Victoria is forced to part with her beloved ranch home to the very masculine Mason Mahaffey and his brothers and sisters. The friction that begins with Mason and Victoria can only lead to love and passion. As Mason struggles with the decision of giving his siblings a home or letting Victoria have have her ranch, the readers will feel deeply for both characters. In the end love rises and soars between Mason and his "Golden Girl" to create one of the best books ever! Dorothy Garlock has truly delivered one of the greatest romance novels of all times!

I have read most of Victoria's time travel books & thought this would be the same. I was wrong, but I was glad I did read it. This is a story of reincarnation between to people who have never had a happy ending. A thousand years ago, Giff, in a previous life asked for a spell to make Linda love him. He was granted it but the scorcerer, after granting it saw Linda & wanted her for himself.
We have then Giff being killed before they made love. History repeated itself over & over again. That is until this lifetime. Mord is the evil entity who has cursed them, but this time Giff knows what to do to rid Mord from their lives...
But, can he do what her must & survive?...
this book is a wonderful read of supernatural proportions!.......1999-06-06
Forever and a Day is one of the most well thought and imaginative books i've read in a long time. Any one wanting to read something different and unusual will want give this a go!
