Book Description

A finalist for the Man Booker Prize and Winner of the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for the region of Africa, The Good Doctor is a taut, intense tale of the dashed hopes of the post apartheid era and the small betrayals that doom a friendship. It has been greeted with enthusiastic interest around the world and assures Damon Galgut's place as a major international talent. When Laurence Waters arrives at his new post at a deserted rural hospital, staff physician Frank Eloff is instantly suspicious. Laurence is everything Frank is not—young, optimistic, and full of big ideas. The whole town is beset with new arrivals and the return of old faces. Frank reestablishes a liaison with a woman, one that will have unexpected consequences. A self-made dictator from apartheid days is rumored to be active in cross-border smuggling, and a group of soldiers has moved in to track him, led by a man from Frank's own dark past. Laurence sees only possibilities—but in a world where the past is demanding restitution from the present, his ill-starred idealism cannot last.

3 out of 5 stars How did this get nominated for the Booker Prize??.......2007-06-01

Tense and involving ? No. An absorbing story? No. A brilliant literary thriller ? No. Life-altering? Absolutely not!

I had expected this to be reasonably good however, given its MAN Booker Prize nomination, instead it left me wondering about the standard of writing of the books that DIDN`T get nominated - they must have been pretty bad ! This is just passable pulp, a paper-thin story involving mostly uninteresting characters and with dark undertones of post-apartheid that I'm guessing may only really be understood by those who have lived and experienced that way of life. The central character (not the Good Doctor by the way) was, to me, a man of little character at all and the only time I found myself interested in anything to do with him was during his brief visit to his rich and powerful father. As for the Good Doctor himself, well, he was initially portrayed as something of an enigma but as the story progressed he became more and more ordinary and his idealistic attempts at nobility proved anti-climactic at best. I believe that the real message of this book, assuming there is one, will only be appreciated by anyone who lives (or has lived) in or near to South Africa.

3 out of 5 stars somehow dissatisfying.......2005-11-26

I came away from this book with that feeling you get leaving a restaurant where the portions just haven't been big enough, and you're hoping no one will see you slip into the fast-food place round the corner. The Good Doctor is strong on characterisation and the tension between the two doctors kept me hooked till the end. However, the whole political backdrop to events is too obliquely rendered. 'Backdrop' is hardly the word; politics has intruded so completely into the lives and personalities of these people that I felt a more detailed description of the social situation and relationships was required to help me fully understand why these characters feel compelled to do the things they do. Perhaps Galgut was writing for a South African audience who could complete his implications by themselves. Perhaps it was the opposite; he kept things deliberately vague to add a universality and timelessness to the appeal of the book. Either way, it doesn't work for me. In summary, a good enough read but lacking a certain something.

4 out of 5 stars A subtle, powerful book.......2005-05-07

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD: Don't be fooled by the slender size of this book. The writing and content is powerful, packed with haunting images and searing content. On one level, it could be read as a thriller, taut and humid. On another, it appears to be a parable of the repercussions left by apartheid, the inchoate attempts to right centuries of abuse. The hospital, while continuing its administrative operations, with doctors doggedly showing up for duty and logging in rounds, lies indolent, barren and for the most part, unpopulated by the people it is meant to heal. "Not even the seasons changed much. We were too near the tropics for that. There was a dry season & a rainy season, but the temperature that ran through them both didn't rise or fall too much on the chart."

I saw Dr. Eloff's relationship with a native woman, whose true name he never does discover, as the white/native racial issue captured in mineature, his failure to win her over as too much too late. The fact that he only knows her by an Anglicized name is indicative of the entire sequence of events which lead to their tragedy.

3 out of 5 stars never take other people's opinions on books........2004-12-17

very bare in its story telling. i believe this was short listed for the Booker Prize. This book really didn't do anything for me. Its like one of those books you read and then they become part of those untitled stream of books you've read but vaguely remember-kind of like going to a movie that you can barely recall seeing from 2-3 years ago.

Its not badly written but if it had not been assigned reading for class, i would have preferred to read something else. If yu want to read good South African literature, try Gordimer, or Coetzee. Both of whom won the Nobel Prize in literature in recent years. There is no reason why you should or should not read it. It may resonate for those who are south african more.

The characterization is particularly strong so that the characters seem indelible. There is a subtlety to the meaning of the story and the analogy or metaphor it paints of all south africa- young white idealism, blacks who can't forget apartheid, old cynical views, etc. i think this may be the sort of book that touches people differently. SO while i may read it and feel unaffected, it may do something quite different to another.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent : should have snazzed last year's Booker.......2004-09-06

Damon Galgut's "The Good Doctor (GD)" is arguably the best among last year's Booker nominees, though sadly its classy but staid and measured qualities may not be what critics look for in prize winners. With GD, those acquainted with the works of South African novelists like Nadine Gordimer and J M Coetzee will find themselves in familiar territory. South Africa in transition is a perspective commonly adopted by these writers.

At its highest level, the brooding tension between Frank and Laurence in their unlikely relationship is symbolic of the struggle for supremacy between the forces of old and new. When Laurence's wide-eyed enthusiasm is pitted against Frank's resigned and cynical indifference, the result is cataclysmic, far beyond the reader's imagination. While Galgut's story is touched by death and regret, his vision isn't entirely bleak. When Laurence and Frank swap beds, deadbeat after a long night out, they feel strangely comfortable in each other's beds. Like yin and yang, are they not twin halves of a pupa society emerging from its chrysalis ? Laurence's stubborn perseverance against the stultifying bureaucracy of Dr Ngema's hospital isn't always altruistic. His callous disregard for Frank's plight as he goes in frenzied pursuit of his vision of setting up a village clinic is delirious if not a little mad. In spite of this, it is Laurence who unleashes the momentum that forces Frank to examine what's wrong in his thwarted life - his failed relationships with his father, his ex-wife, Maria, etc, and who is ultimately the catalyst for Frank's transformation.

There are scenes in GD that are truly memorable, like Frank's and Zanele's unexpected nocturnal encounter with the shadowy figure of the Brigadier, the town's former tinpot dictator. Surely Zanele's schoolgirl-like enchantment with her host is Galgut's sideswipe at the veneer thin and uncomprehending sloganeering of armed chaired liberals from afar. Galgut's characterisation is excellent, sharp and realised throughout. The sullenness of Tehogo, the hospital's sole unqualified male nurse, perfectly encapsulates the corruption, rot and decay of South African society. Only the rehearsed platitudes flowing from the mouth of Dr Ngema comes across as false, stagy and predictable. You know what she will say even before she says it. A minor lapse in otherwise great characterisation.

Galgut's poised, unhurried and reasoned prose is an absolute delight. Its greatest strength lies in its ability to reveal many layered truths of a society at its crossroads without hyperbole or false bravura. A thoroughly confident and assured debut from Galgut, who will no doubt join the ranks of great South African novelists.

John Grant, the Howard Roark of golf course design, has been commissioned to draw the high-profile Pendleton Beach Golf Links. It's a career maker, but the idealistic young architect must somehow overcome the profit-minded tactics of his employer, Mario International Golf Course Design, which, like most corporate golf course design firms, is only interested in making money. When Grant submits a "carefully sketched dogleg left par-4," they strip it of "any semblance of architectural integrity." Originality is scrapped for reproductions of proven golf courses, threatening the purity of the game that Grant holds dear.

Enter Dr. Alister MacKenzie, the famous Scottish golf course architect who has returned from hibernation to design one last great course. After convincing Grant (and to a lesser extent, us readers) that his death in 1934 was staged, the 128-year-old doctor and his wide-eyed disciple set out to build a masterpiece and save golf's revered values and traditions. What ensues is a witty and often insightful look at the state of golf today (and to an equal extent, the esoteric methods of an architect). Author Geoff Shackelford's agenda is obvious but noble; links purists and literary landscapers alike will embrace The Good Doctor. --Rob McDonald

1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2005-04-25

I enjoy the game of golf as much as anyone. I enjoy great golf architecture, and I enjoy well written novels. Mr. Shackelford may enjoy golf, and may appreciate good golf arcitecture, but he should leave novel writing to creative writers. He is not a bad writer, but fiction is not his fortay. Don't waste your time reading this one.

5 out of 5 stars Dr MacKenzie I presume...I'm honored to meet you!.......1999-06-15

Geoff Schackelford has done a wonderful job of bringing Dr Alister Mackenzie and his work back to life. I could feel the presence of the Good Doctor as if he were sitting and talking with me. I enjoyed walking Pendleton Golf Links as much as Doc's biting humor. Ever read anything and felt like you knew the person? Take a walk or find a good chair and enjoy yourself and learn about golf course architecture from a master architect and master writer!

5 out of 5 stars Fun read, a must if you like Mackenzie.......1999-04-03

This is a lot of fun to read and an interesting story. The ending is a suprise, but I'm not sure if I liked it, but it did not spoil the rest of the book and the creative way Mackenzie is brought back to life. Bringing the Doctor back to Augusta was great fun, and it makes you think about how much he might not like it, especially with all the changes made to the course this year.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for all golf course architects........1998-12-10

Shackelford, through his young hero and his hero's 'reincarnated' mentor, bring the theory and practise of course architecture back to one of its basic tenents - when completed, the course should be a compliment to its beginnings, not a tricked-up monument to a designers ego. Not overly long, it can easily be consumed in one setting. But be prepared to laugh, cry, and be angry, sometimes all at once. If you're a golfer, serious or otherwise, you will enjoy MacKenzie's subtle dressing down of the popular gimmicks and signature styles of many of the popular designers. Enjoy, enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars Not a great book.......2005-11-19

I love to read. Espeacially fantasies. I was so excited to see this book sitting on the shelf, after reading a great mermaid book I had to read more. This book was not at all intended for me. It was a story collection and none were very good. I thought a lot more work could have been added and more descriptions. I only recomend it to children in 3rd grade, though it does not have pictures for the younger. I highly suggest that if you are any older then don't read it. I disliked it a lot, the stories were really cheesy.

Aquamarine: This book had the potential of being interesting and fun to read. But instead this book was just bland.

Hailey and Claire are best friends and they have one summer together before Claire has to move to Florida, leaving Hailey beind. Their 'hang-out' is the nearly abandoned country club, with it's very green, dirty pool. One day they find a mermaid in the pool and when the mermaid asks them to set her up on a date with the only employee of the country club, they help her fulfill this wish before putting her back in the ocean.

Indigo: I got the impression that I was like I wasn't even reading a real book; it was more like reading something that a 4 year old dreams about. And not in a good way. This book has a stupid plot line.

Martha, Eli and Trevor are best friends. They live in the very dry town of Oak Grove. All the people of Oak Grove are terrified of water because of a flood that the town had a few years prior. But Martha, Eli and Trevor all want to see the ocean, despite their parent's wishes to have stay on dry land all their lives. So the children all start walking one day to get to the ocean. A storm comes and a tree branch falls onto Martha and hurts her, so they turn back to Oak Grove. And Eli and Trevor save Martha and all the townspeople because they can naturally swim, because they are offspring to mermaids.

I do not recomend this book. Not worth buying, let alone reading.

4 out of 5 stars good book.......2004-03-12

i think that aquariem was awesome i read it 2 times. i think that it should have a newbarry award. my favroite part was when they found the mermaide. i also like the part when she go's on a date with the man that worked at the shack.the sadest part was when the mermaid was getting sick and she was falling apart.well at least they got her back inside of the sea.
i thought that indigo was my favroite in the hole story i would rate it 5 stars. i think that it was wrong to even put up that wall so that they could not see the pretty view of the ocean. that was such a great book i loved it ecspeacally when they found there mom.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Will Leave You Wanting More.......2003-02-07

I've always been a big fan of Christian Romances, especially ones set in past times. All I can say is I could not put this book down! I stayed up half the night reading all that I could. It is suspenseful, funny, heartbreaking, and uplifting all at the same time. I loved it! I immediately went out and got the sequel also!

5 out of 5 stars Awsome Book!.......2001-04-13

This is one of the best books that I've read of its kind. I love reading and this one kept me hooked. If you have ever read a Christian romance that you liked, you'll like this one. There are many plot twists and they keep you guessing right up to the very end. Even with all the turns it takes, you never get lost - I knew what was happening from beggining to end. Your heart will go out to Sylvie and what she needs to go through. She is forced to make a choice between love and loyalty to her family. Her strong, though young faith in God keeps her going and happy through it all.

5 out of 5 stars This book is truly a heart and soul gripping tale........1999-08-27

Lisa Samson is a wordsmith that takes your heart on a spiritual journey filled with memorable characters that become dear friends, or bitter enemies. The landscape is breathtaking. You will emerge from this book an enriched person.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate and well-crafted.......1999-08-21

A gifted storyteller, Lisa Samson's passion for life animates her characters while her eye for detail creates the historical stage upon which they struggle, grow, and ultimately come to terms with themselves and God.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!.......1999-08-11

"Indigo Waters" is a very inspiring and well-written book. From the opening sentence until the last line you can see everything clearly. You really feel like you know the characters. Sylvie's faith in God is very inspiring. Even when it seems like everything is going wrong (and almost everything you can imagine does) she never lets go of her faith in God and He never lets go of her. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

4 out of 5 stars Turbulant waves, Hurricane winds...........2003-06-10

This is a good sequel to Rivers of the Soul. Antoinette and Jerome have the weights of too many on their shoulders. After 20 years of being apart and married to others, they have discovered that the love they have is deep rooted to sustain the responsibilities that they have. Combined they have children and ex's to deal with, along with a host of friends and family members that have major issues. As they struggle with employment, they are struck hard with death approaching some very close family and friends. They realize their love is strong and that they have major responsibillities and they are not love struck teenagers. They also realize that mistakes that they made in the past, have to be rectified. Everyone learns what needs to be done, after a tragedy strikes. You have a little bit of everything in this story and the supporting characters are excellent. You laugh, and you Cry, I wanted to whoop up on Jerome's wife. Excellent Job! Easy read.

5 out of 5 stars The Ebb and Flow of Life and Love.......2002-09-30

I read Rivers of My Soul and loved it and couldn't wait to read this sequel. I was not disappointed. I absolutely love Leslie Esdaile's style of writing. It is so down to earth. Through her writing, you could feel, relate and understand what the characters were going through. You could feel Toni's grief on learning that a loved one would be leaving her soon, but at the same time, you almost felt your own stomach cramping as she fought to keep the tears from her voice so as not to alarm her beloved Aunt Pearline. You felt her fear as she realized that her life was not as it should be. You could relate as she finally snapped out of it and remembered her power and started concentrating on what she COULD do instead of what she couldn't. You nodded your head and understood her ferocity as a mother lion protecting her cubs. And you really understood how she felt to be all things to everyone, but at night, she was still a sensuous, giving, taking, needing, loving, sexual woman who could give as well as take and you sighed when she and Jerome took it to another level. Yeah. If you have ever been a woman in love, I mean REALLY in love with that one person who should have been the one by your side, no matter what, you could relate.

...

4 out of 5 stars A Realistic Romance Novel.......2002-09-05

Quite simply this book is a beautiful tale about love lost and found again. After a 20-year pause, Antoinette and Jerome have found each other again. This time, nothing shall separate them. Still Waters Run Deep is a story full of passion- sweet, mature, rewarding and profound. The rejuvenation between two kindred souls makes this novel a must read, a definite addition to any well rounded book collection.

Antoinette is a savvy businesswoman- Jerome is blue collar. The two met in high school and family influence being what it is, separation soon followed. Antoinette went to college and Jerome went to the service. Two lives separated, but hearts still together. Hurt soon followed, of course. Two lives separated and hearts divided as well. Both Toni and Jay (pet names for each other) married other people and had families. Separated lives, divided hearts and other spirits to intertwine. But through it all, that which is lost shall be found again.

A major facet of Still Waters Run Deep is the theme of family tradition, the passing on of a rich heritage and the assurance that the past is never forgotten; only enhanced. As such Toni has been passed on the family torch of preparing the Easter feast and becoming the caretaker of her family. She is preparing to take over as the head of a sisterhood who speak in a mystical female language. Toni is preparing herself for the role of queen bee to her family. She embraces the task of providing a place emotionally for the sustenance and support of every member. A formidable undertaking but as the eldest, those before her have groomed her for this position. Jay loves her all the more for strength and ability. He notices how she can behave as a mother bear fiercely protecting her own, a loving vixen, attentive to his needs and the love that lay dormant for 20 years sparks to life. What more could any two people want and need.

If ever a book, I wanted to find myself in were written, I would have to say that Still Waters Run Deep would be the one. The simplistic beauty of love, the intrinsic complexity of family dynamics, the strength to meld the two together seamlessly make this novel fascinating to read and memorable.

4 out of 5 stars Holding On.......2002-07-27

For me, Still Waters Run Deep was a much-anticipated sequel to Rivers of the Soul and I was not disappointed. While reading this novel, I was often reminded of and hummed that oldie tune of the same title.

In Rivers of the Soul, Toni and Jerome reintroduced themselves to each other with the excitement and freshness of new lovers. Still Waters Run Deep picks up where Rivers of the Soul left off, with Toni and Jerome taking their relationship public and going through the trials and tribulations of meshing careers, finances and blending families. After finding each other, knowing that they are each other's soul mate, will they be able to navigate the obstacles placed before them?

Still Waters Run Deep goes several steps further by examining Toni and Jerome's responses to their responsibilities; their ability to handle crisis; their speculations of the uncertainty of their relationship and revealing some truths that neither knew about the other.

Leslie Esdaile's characters are feisty and strong willed; the situations are descriptive, vivid and realistic. This sequel, while long on pages, is quick and thought-provoking. What I took from this novel is to dream, instill your faith in that dream and never let go. .....Reviewed by Dawn R. Reeves, APOOO BookClub.

4 out of 5 stars Love is better the second time around.......2002-06-21

How would you handle a second chance to undo 20 years of 'what ifs', and find the happiness that has always eluded you? In Leslie Esdaile's Still Waters Run Deep, Jerome and Antoinette are given a chance to do just that.

This sequel to Rivers of the Soul delves into the very fiber of marriage and family. It shares a very real, very touching look at responsibilities and missed opportunities. It sends the message that it takes courage to count your losses and take your life to another level. This story carries the full embodiment of letting go and letting a higher power direct your life.

Jerome realizes for this woman to have seen him in all of his youthful glory, and also in all his mature confusion, and to still look at him with admiration and desire; That she is indeed the other half of his wholeness, that she has become the still waters that run so deep within him, that she has called him from his own depths. Antoinette, is finally able to share childhood events which shaped her life and forced her to react/behave in a manner that had imprisonsed her with fear.

The lives of three other couples are also intertwined, so the decisions by Toni and Jerome greatly affect the outcome of each of the marriages. As the story unravels, you begin to see the humanness of each couple and the fears of the individuals who make up the couples. This book covers many high profile issues; divorce, spousal abuse, infidelity and parenting. It urges the reader to love yourself enough to reach beyond what's expected and with courage grasp that second opportunity.

Ms. Esdaile has written a sequel that explores and expands what living your dreams is all about. The one message I bring from this book is to never give up, don't ever give up your dreams. Please take the opportunity to read this wonderful story. -- Reviewed by aNN Brown

            Book Description

The Omnibus will carry a comprehensive Introduction by Saros Cowasjee, which will place these novels in their socio-historical and literary contexts. The collection will appeal to general readers as well as scholars interested in Anglo-Indian writing, colonial history and literature, and British historiography of India. The four books included in this selection, under the editorship of Saros Cowasjee, have all been out of print for nearly forty years or more. These include On the Face of the Waters (Flora Annie Steel, 1896), Siri Ram Revolutionist (Edmund Candler, 1912), Indigo (Christine Weston, 1943), and Wild Sweet Witch (Philip Mason, 1947). Just about the finest novel of the Mutiny, On the Face of the Waters is a superb presentation of history in fictional form. In the framework of the siege of Delhi, Flora Annie Steel works out the crisis in the relationship of Major Erlton and Alice Gissing the later one of the really great women in fiction. First published in 1896, the b ook was an immediate success and reprinted some six times within the same number or months. Though the Indian National Congress was founded in 1885, the Indian nationalist as a major character did not appear in Anglo-Indian fiction until Edmund Candler s Siri Ram-Revolutionist in 1912. The Portrayal of nationalists was generally unfriendly: they were shown as cowards motivated by self-interest and by no means representative of the people. In this novel, Siri Ram is led into an act of terrorism by Subtler and more unscrupulous minds than his own. He is greatly flattered when, after returning from a term in jail for being the scapegoat editor on an anti-Raj newspaper, he is chosen to kill the kindly magistrate, Merivale. Siri Ram s own pathetic end demonstrates the futility of violence. But if he is guilty of deluding himself that a general uprising is at hand to free India, so is his creator, Candler, in refusing to see that many of the revolutionaries were honest and dedicated me n. First published in 1943, Indigo has been out of print for some forty years. It is primarily a story of friendship between three boys Jacques, the son of French parents John Macbeth, son of a British army officer and Hardyal, son of a westernized Hindu lawyer. As they grow up they drift apart: the first into passive disillusionment, the second into unstinting support of the British Raj, and the third into revolutionary patriotism Like Forster in A Passage to India, Weston too feels that love never has and never will transcend politics not until politics have broken down the barriers which transcend love. But this is only one aspect of this many-faceted novel, full of brilliant characterization and vivid descriptions on the plains and hills of northern India. In love with India, Weston is however not sentimentalist. She is acutely aware of the country s failings she is equally aware of the turgid vitality of its inhabitants. Philip Mason s novel, The Wild Sweet Wi tch portrays the last years of the Raj through the eyes of three generations of Garwali family-the old Patriarch, Kalyanu, his son and his grandson, Jodh Singh. Jodh Singh is the first member of his family to be educated beyond school. The new ideas he is exposed to irrevocably change his outlook towards his friends, his village, his British masters and his old way of life. He gets involved with groups fighting for the country's independence movement but even this does not resolve his inner war with himself, a struggle that ultimately results in death.
