Book Description
A man's duty. . . a woman's passion. . . "The Edge of Honor" cuts both ways. In this sweeping novel of the Vietnam War at sea and on the homefront, Lieutenant Brian Holcomb, smart, ambitious, honorable, and up for promotion, discovers that his ship - the USS John Bell Hood - hides a dangerous secret. What Brian does about it may end his career, or threaten the lives of hundreds. A fully-imagined tale of passion, adventure, and betrayal, "The Edge of Honor" features a cast of characters whose public vows and private motives drive the plot.
Customer Reviews:
Too Much Jargon, Not Enough Style.......2002-08-02
The Edge of Honor, written by a retired Navy captain, tries hard to bring the reader into the Navy world and capture the reader's imagination, but doesn't quite succeed. With its stiff prose and bland characters, the novel plods along without building much suspense until two-thirds of the way through, when plot, action, and character finally combine to produce a page-turner. Until that point, however, the military jargon is overwhelming, even with a glossary included at the back of the book. Deutermann's attempt to have the reader learn along with the new guy simply makes the hero look unappealingly naive. A few scenes of life aboard a ship in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam war are extraneous to the plot, do not build character, and are not strong enough in a literary sense to merit inclusion in the book.
Retired navy personnel may find this novel an intriguing description of an ultimately dysfunctional ship, but to the outsider it has little to offer.
Stand-by, Execute!.......2000-07-06
Well, Captain P.T. Deutermann USN (Ret) has done it again. He has written another well thought-out military thriller that also has all the ingredients of a good mystery. With each book released, he just gets better and better.
LT Brian Holcomb is a young surface warfare officer who is trying to undo the damage of a potentially career-ending fitness report. Attempting to do so, he takes an assignment to a guided missile cruiser, the USS JOHN BELL HOOD. Once aboard, he realizes that he will have his hands full. Drug abuse is rampant and as those of us who remember 1969 can attest, the American war effort was already universally reviled by civilians and military people alike.
LT Holcomb leaves behind his wife Maddy who is beginning to feel the stirring of restlessness and the desire to be her own person. She realizes as she embarks on a career as a banker that she does not need to be the good little Navy wife and stand by her man. She does not need to be Mrs. "Lieutenant" Holcomb to have a life of her own making.
But Brian is at war and the USS JOHN BELL HOOD is on the firing line in the South China Sea. Mr Deutermann does an outstanding job of describing life at sea during those unpopular war years. He knows from whence he speaks, having commanded a cruiser himself.
Mr Deutermann served his country in the Navy for more than 25 years. He has captured the essence of that service and what sacrifices are made by service members to a "T." If anyone doubts what naval service during the Vietnam War meant, I recommend that they read this book. It is a great look into that period of time and what it meant to value duty, honor and country.
Brian Holcomb is a fine character and a better junior officer than he gave himself credit for. Peter Deutermann did a great job with all of the characterizations in this book, but especially Holcomb's Commanding Officer. I would go so far as to say that if schools around the country pick a naval story to replace THE CAINE MUTINY in their American Lit classes, then this should be the one. But don't take my word for it, read this book and you'll be hooked. You'll go looking for the backlist of all the books by Peter Deutermann and you won't be disappointed.
Thank you Captain Deutermann for another great read. BZ from a former paratrooper.
Excellent Sea Story.......2000-01-24
This is the best contemporary Navy story I have read. Many of us who served in the Navy in that era fought the same fights on our ships as did LT Holcumb on the mythical Hood. (Don't think the problem Holcomb had on the Hood didn't exist - it did. We had a similar experience with drug use on my ship as several key personnel we were removed from duty at a critical time.) The CIC scenes in the book are excellent - they brought back memories of long, difficult watches. The relationship between Holcomb and his Chief is well done - with Holcomb trying to learn from the more experienced man, while trying to provide leadership. Further, Deutermann well describes the loneliness and stuggles faced by spouses left behind when the ship deployed. While I am an avid reader, I rarely reread a book. However, I've reread this one several times. It is highly reccommended. REC
BRAVO ZULU.......1999-06-07
For those us that experienced Viet Nam as junior officers in the United State Navy, this book is more fact then fiction. Americans would be well served if this novel is made into a movie, providing of course that Mr. Deutermann is given complete artistic control. America needs another glimpse of this part of our history as seen through the eyes of young Americans in a bad place, at a bad time, doing the best job they can. To all that shared this experience and to P.T.Deutermann, Capt., USN, I say Bravo Zulu and godspeed.
A concise, accurate and well written naval fiction........1998-10-29
This is a great book from the perspective of someone who actually served in Combat Information Center on board the ship which was used as the model for the book. I was dissappointed in the drug related issue since drugs were few and far between on the ship at that time. It took the shine off an otherwise stellar read. In all other aspects. particularly the operations and technical info this was first rate with few exceptions.
Book Description
A novel about naval warfare in Florida during the Civil War.
The year is 1863. The Civil War is leaving its bloody trail across the nation as Peter Wake, born and bred in the snowy North, joins the U.S. Navy as a volunteer officer and arrives in steamy Florida for duty with the East Gulf Blockading Squadron. The idealistic Wake has handled boats before, but he's new to the politics and illicit liaisons that war creates among men. Assigned to the Rosalie, a tiny, armed sloop, Captain Wake commands a group of seasoned seamen on a series of voyages to seek and arrest Confederate blockade-runners and sympathizers, first in Florida's
Wake risks his reputation as a tough officer and smart decision-maker when he falls in love with Linda Donahue, whose father is a Confederate zealot, and steals away to spend precious hours with her at her Key West home. Their love is tested as Wake must make the ugly decisions of war in a beautiful, tropical paradise--decisions that will take Peter Wake right up to the edge of honor.
Customer Reviews:
I'm hooked, I will have to read all the books in the series........2005-07-13
Robert Macomber has woven a tapestry of thought provoking intrigue and verbally painted vivid images that bring the reader directly to the site of historically accurate action.
The novel is monumentally documented with meticulous on location personal maritime observations combined with scrutinizing personal profiles and a superb story telling technique.
This classic novel of history and intrigue of the sea whets my appetite for more.
Better than O'Brian's Master & Commander.......2004-03-18
At The Edge of Honor is a great story about the East Gulf Blockading Squadron of the U.S. Navy, based to patrol Florida, Cuba, & the Bahamas during the civil war. The main character of this story is Peter Wake, U.S.N. who gets himself caught up in a pretty good fix; he's in a war on the Union side and is in love with a "Reb"; if the war wasn't trouble enough! Without giving away the story, this book is very well written and is easy to read. You do not need a nautical dictionary to help you read it; as was the case in Patrick O'Brian's Master & Commander series. I found this nautical adventure story very interesting on two accounts. First, it is dealing with the U.S. and takes place in nearby US waters, Florida Keys area. Secondly, it is easy to read; nautical terms are very few when compared to other nautical fiction/historical books. I enjoyed this book alot. I can't wait to read the second book in the series.
Great Read.......2003-07-22
There are two things that I thoroughly enjoyed about this book. First, there just isn't enough written about not just the naval theater during the Civil War, but on routine daily life in the Navy. When we think of naval war, we often imagine life aboard the CSS Alabama or running the gauntlet at Mobile Bay as being the norm during this time frame. In fact, as Bob Macomber very ably demonstrates, many sailors served on smaller vessels, in remote areas, and performed relatively routine duties. In order to understand the Navy experience, it is crucial that we understand what sailors actually did, and Macomber explains this very well and, as a result, fills a niche that otherwise would remain vacant.
In addition, he also writes in a manner and format that is very appealling to many who otherwise would not even pay a second thought to the Civil War. Macomber effortlessly intertwines the fiction with the non-fiction so that the entire story flows seemlessly. In some circles, historical fiction is maligned as distorting the truth or not representing historical fact. However, Macomber demonstrates that you can predicate a fictional work on facts and documented history to produce a compelling, enjoyable, and highly educational work.
There's a lot to offer a variety of people here, and I would recommend this to both the casual reader as well as the avid Civil War enthusiast.
Neat Nautical Novel - From Florida's Finest.......2002-06-17
Naval historical novels are rare; those situted around Florida are rarer still. Few know that FL was a WBTS site of battles, etc. Macomber has brought to light the little known, and wrapped it in an appealing work of fiction, apparently one of a series. REAL naval knowledge is obvious -- almost too much so -- I read it with the dictionary beside me. Character development evolves well while scene descriptions evoke a "you are there" feeling. Will Peter Wake regain his Linda? Sure hope so! Want a romantic ending after a super first novel.
Kudoes, Sailor Macomber --keep it up. You have us in your preemptive thrall, make us beg for more and keep 'em coming. More dialogue would be nice, but the descriptive passages make up for it. As a friend said, a "Warm Ocean is sure better [and more readable] than a Cold Mountain..." You will have groupies galore, we predict. You make book signings real experiential, complete with "ships-ahoy" cookies to nibble. Throw out the anchor, we've got the lifeline well in hand. And so do you.

Thrilling nautical yarn!.......2002-06-02
Wonderful new CW novel depicting Florida in the Civil War, a seldom written about perspective of this horrific struggle. Master Peter Wake is all that is heroic, albeit seemingly sometimes to struggle as he learns his way about the US Navy having recently transferred from commercial sailing. The narrative is compelling, characters honest and convincing. The chapter "River of Peace" still has me riveted with the depiction of the river chase and afterwards battle scenes. I wish Master Wake would listen to his superior officer more about "dangerous shoals" when falling in love with Linda! ;-) I look forward to the next novel in the series. Well Done PHP!!

Best-selling author Gilbert Morris has created an epic story of war, regret, love, and forgiveness set in the post-Civil War South.
Customer Reviews:
one of Morris' best.......2007-04-21
Gilbert Morris is one of my favorite authors, and IMO, Edge of Honor is one of his best. While perhaps slightly predictable, it is no less engaging, and definitely action packed. The characters, especially Quentin and Eden are deep and well developed; even the children.
But, the book was really enhanced by the crazy character of Ben Calendar and his unexpected story.
Very endearing story...makes me want to float down the Mississippi and look for this farm.
I love reading Gilbert Morris!.......2002-04-23
Reading his books are like sitting down with a cup of tea in front of a fireplace and having a heart to heart talk with Dad! All of his books are so interesting, so full of romance, adventure, and depth of character! Edge of honor was superb! The Lord always talks to me through Gilbert Morris writings!
A View of the Complicated Post-War South.......2000-10-24
Gilbert Morris has managed to integrate the guilt of a Yankee toward his war deeds into a journey of self forgiveness and discovery in the EDGE OF HONOR. The opposing emotions of one who is duty bound to fight for his nation , yet honor bound to mininster to the sick and dying is a wrenching study in the strength of character of one human being. To further complicate matters by falling in love with the widow of a casualty of the struggle who happened to be on the opposite side of the fight... well; Could it get any more difficult? Yes, if you were the dealer of the death-blow to said casualty! Magnificent period imagery, heart-tugging interpersonal relations. Gilbert Morris is a fine writer and a very competent historian.
A wonderful Civil War romance.......2000-08-03
I found this book to be written exceptionaly well. It's nothing less than what Gilbert Morris usually writes. However, it was a bit hard to believe the situation happening, although it definatly could. I found it romantic and enjoyable reading, but give it a four because it didn't give me quite as big a thrill in reading it as most of his other work does. It was however, a wonderful book and I would still highly recomend it for reading. You will go with a northerner as he travels to the south to help out a woman whose husband, he has killed during the end of the Civil War. It was an accident that he killed this man and finds it his responsiblity to care for his wife. So off he sets to help her, but finds love instead. Go with him as he travels to a place that people have made him feel less than welcome. Enjoy your reading!
Great book!.......2000-06-14
Happened across this book in the bookstore. I have never read any other books by this author, but I was intrigued by the storyline on the book jacket and the time period (I love Civil War era history). I couldn't put this book down (there is life without the internet! ) and finished it in 3 days. Highly recommend this book!

Customer Reviews:
Fast moving but disappointing.......2000-07-21
The latest book is fast paced but disappointing. A number of the more fleshed out and interesting characters from earlier books are killed. The second most interesting and decisive military leader of prior tomes has become almost cardboard and comical in his stupidity. Maddy, the president, has lost her edge. Herman's earlier books were more realistic, this one leaves you not caring if the left wing/right wing romance blossoms further, the kids survive boarding school, or the presidency is further shamed by idiot advisors. On the bright side -Maddy's feminism is perfect - parroting the claptrap that comes right out of Hollywood movies and network TV. The military, a subject Herman knows well, is well represented in prior books, but is too phoney at times. Regarding the White House machinations - bring back the guillotine. Herman does keep you wondering what stereotype will next pop up and meet a well-deserved end. In spite of the negatives, this book is difficult to put down and isn't a total stinker. You just wish the REAListic people hadn't been killed off. And there are enough patently and smarmy loose ends by the last chapter, you can almost hear the screams of the publisher "sequel coming".
Another Quickie "Thriller".......2000-07-13
If you're sitting in an airport or on the beach and need a distraction, go ahead and buy this book. But it really is a waste of time. The characters are flat, the plot is far less than thrilling and even the word craft is less than expected from this author (hey - does the President's 11-year-old daughter have to repeatedly 'flounce' out of the room?) Much like Tom Clancy has opted to put his name on second-rate books that he didn't write, Edge Of Honor seems to be a book that was quickly slapped together, relying on character development originated in previous novels.
This is a waste of time & money.
great political thriller.......2000-07-11
This is one of the best political thrillers I've read in a long time. I just wish Maddy Turner could really run for President! Herman does a great job weaving the plot together. My only wish would be for a stronger finish.
So So "Thriller".......2000-07-03
Well, it could have been a great story, but it still was okay. The characters are a bit two dimensional and, in some ways, unrealistic. You have to make some great leaps in logic to follow the storyline, but once you do, the rest falls into line. Not a bad rainy day read, but not the best either.
Remainder bin please.......2000-06-14
'Could very well be tomorrow's headlines' screams a blurb on the cover of this post-Cold War thriller about an American president foiling the planned partition of Poland between a Russia ruled by criminals and a Germany again surging eastwards. Although the pace is relentless, the characterisation is predictable and insulting. While the Americans are all heroic action figures and the Poles plucky fighters, the Russians are brutal sexual perverts and the Germans untrustworthy plotters. That the author has chosen to make the sadistic Russian leader an epileptic as well is distasteful, to say the least. One for the remainder bin.

Book Description
These essays were written by colleagues and former students of Richard Bulliet, the scholar and mentor whose "most important contribution remains his extraordinary imagination in the service of history." The hallmark of Views from the Edge, then, is innovative scholarship in all periods of Islamic history. Its authors share a commitment to asking original historiographical questions, with an overall orientation toward issues in social history. Topics in methodology and narrative strategies form the focus of several articles in the medieval period, including the use of biblical metaphors and the portraiture of a courtesan to competing paradigms of legitimacy in the mid-eighth century. European encounters with Islam in the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries and the contemporary practice of horsemanship pertain to the early modern period, while reactions to the Balfour Declaration, Islamism in the early twentieth century, the Middle East in crime fiction, and the use of the pre-Islamic past as nationalist propaganda are among the themes dealing with recent history.

Customer Reviews:
The story is very typical, but well written. I liked all of the characters........2007-08-07
If you read romance regularly, you have read this story a hundred times over...
The opening scene has the hero character, Geoffrey, as a young boy who is watching his father bleed to death. He swears to avenge his father's murder.
18 years later, all of his father's lands are in the hands of the murderer. Geoffrey, who was his father's heir, is determined to get his rightful inheritance back. He kidnaps the murderer's beautiful daughter, Elizabeth. He holds her for ransom, refusing to give her back until his lands are returned. Over a short number of days, to two battle each other. Despite it all, they fall in love.
Geoffrey refuses to let his feelings for Elizabeth sway his plans. He wants his lands, but realizes he will not give her up either. He must find a way to keep both. His good intentions are foiled when jealous rivals plan his murder.
Elizabeth is determined to save her father from Geoffrey's sword, but still keep his love. When the truth comes out, she will fight to save Geoffrey from an attempted murder.
The story, while not unique in plot, does have some unique twists to keep it interesting. Both main characters are good- hearted people, as are many of their friends. I enjoy a story much more when I can really like the main couple.
The villain characters are also very predictable, but they are not given a large part in the story until the end. Unfortunately, the ending is very rushed. After several chapters of a slowly unfolding plot, everything is solved all too tidily in the last chapter. It was as if the author had to meet a rapidly approaching deadline. In chapter 19, there is strife and tension between many characters, which has lasted for 18 years. The hero is near death. In chapter 20, the hero has a miraculous recovery and gives up everything he fought for, everyone is friends, and the author even throws in a plan for annual donations to the local orphanage. (Huh???) It cheapened the story a bit.
Still, overall, this was a good book when you consider that the author is very new. Hopefully she'll keep some of her own likable style, and branch out to more unique plots in the future.
An Engaging Story of Medieval Love.......2007-01-19
"A Knight's Vengeance" tells a wonderfully romantic tale set against a thrilling medieval background. As in her previous novel "Dance of Desire," Catherine Kean presents interesting, well-developed characters who are thrown into extraordinary circumstances that test their courage, strength, and loyalty.
In this case, Lady Elizabeth Brackendale, the daughter of a wealthy lord, is kidnapped by Geoffrey de Lanceau, a roguish knight sworn to kill Elizabeth's father to avenge his father's death. Sworn enemies to each other, the worst thing Elizabeth and Geoffrey can do is fall in love.
Kean has a marvelous ability to draw the reader into the story through her use of the senses. We can almost smell the exotic flowers in Elizabeth's bath water, taste the figs covered in honey and cinnamon, and hear the belches of the disgusting suitor that her father selected for Elizabeth. The playful teasing and growing sensuality produce the perfect level of moderate intimacy that will satisfy most romance readers. I highly recommend it.

A warmhearted historical story full of passion and heart .......2006-12-10
Geoffrey de Lanceau has spent eighteen long years nurturing his need for vengeance against the man who ended his father's life and confiscated his heritage. He's never gotten over the fact that when his honorable father died he was branded a traitor by king and country.
Betrothed to the lecherous Baron Sedgewick of Avenley, Lady Elizabeth Brackendale is desperate to find a way to escape her impending marriage. She dreams of marrying a man she could love. Just being in the baron's presence makes her nauseous, how could she possibly stand him touching her?
Geoffrey and Elizabeth meet in the market for the first time when she's almost run down by a wagon while attempting to evade her guards. It isn't until she tries intimidating him with knowledge about her father that he realizes that she is the daughter of the man he's sworn vengeance against - Lord Arthur Brackendale. Once he leaves her to the inept care of her guards, Geoffrey meets up with his friend and fellow knight Dominic who had heard of Elizabeth's upcoming nuptials. Geoffrey sees the marriage for what it is - an attempt at protecting Elizabeth from him and joining Sedgewick and Brackendale lands which border each other. To draw Brackendale out, Geoffrey intends to do the one thing sure to enrage the Lord - kidnap his daughter and hold her for ransom. It's a good solid plan but can he keep himself from falling in love with the daughter of the enemy? What if he discovers that the man he thought was the enemy isn't at the root of the deception that resulted in his father's death?
Catherine Kean will have readers riveted to the pages of her newest novel A KNIGHT'S VENGEANCE. I adore Elizabeth's stubbornly determined nature. Geoffrey is just as contrary. Imagining these two characters going head to head on every little issue from the quality of the meals to whether or not he'd allow Elizabeth to take a bath kept me reading to see who would be victorious in their continuing battle of wills. I was quickly drawn into this storyline and could easily sympathize with both characters' plights and could hardly wait to see how it would all work out.
Chrissy Dionne (courtesty of Romance Junkies)
Delighful.......2006-10-24
Just when I thought that no one writes medieval romances any more, here comes Catherine Kean. A Knight's Vengeance is a great love story with all the ingredients of a traditional historical romance: tough hero, feminine heroine, adequately mean vilan and villaness, adverse circumstances, etc.
It doesn't quite match the best in the genre, but it comes close enough for me. I give Kean's novel five stars especially for not making the heroine a modern-day feminist, which many romance writers -- mistakenly in my opinion -- tend to do these days.
Enthralling Medieval Romance.......2006-10-17
Catherine Kean has created a beautiful, well-written medieval romance that will entrance you from beginning to end. The handsome, emotionally tortured Knight Geoffrey de Lanceau lives to clear his father's name as traitor to the king. He finds a way to take his vengenance on Lord Brackendale, whom he believes is responsible for his family's downfall - his beautiful daughter, Elizabeth. Geoffrey captures her for ransom. He soon finds that Elizabeth is as beautiful on the inside as on the outside. It is not only her silkly black hair, blue eyes, and sensual figure that puts him in a spell, but her kindness that captures him, and he finds himself thinking of her, more than his quest to clear his father's name. A sensual dance between them begins which entrances the reader. Their love grows and becomes the strength and answer to finding the truth. I found the book hard to put down. Ms. Kean's writing style is flawless. The characters are so believable and the story so descriptive, that you feel you are there. As you become enthralled with the sensual relationship and love building between Geoffrey and Elizabeth you ask - Who is the real evil? Who is the betrayer? And this is another enjoyable surprise about this story, as it will surprise you at the end. The reader doesn't have it all figured out before you finish the book. This is a book Medieval Romance fans need to put on their next read list. I look forward to many more wonderful stories by Catherine Kean.

Book Description
When an evil warlord and his army take young Drazkon's family from him, two strangers rescue the orphan and vow to raise him. Aspen, the fleet-footed elf, and Exteri, a tiny fairy with a big heart, are these strangers. Aspen, taking on the full responsibility of the child, raises him as a child of the forest; and as Drazkon grew, so did Exteris' fondness for him.
Being in such a sorrowful and hopeless situation, Exteri visits her mother, the eldest and wisest of the fairy kingdom, for advice. Exteris' mother tells her of a legend which sends her and her friends on a very long and dangerous quest, which upon completion would allow Exteri to take human form. With feelings of love mutual between the hulking barbarian and the tiny fairy, Drazkon and his friends set out on their grand adventure with high hopes of success.
Along the way friendships grow stronger, as many dark and evil foes step forward to oppose the companions. Many new friends are acquired along the way; which suits Drazkon just fine, for to him this quest has two main goals; love and vengeance. The physical love he wished to share with Exteri, and the vengeance he vowed to bring upon the evil warlord Maxitor, and his murderous hoard!
