Book Description
If you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), you must be pretty familiar with the link between your condition and nutrition. Instead of adding another voice to the chorus of people telling you what you shouldn't eat, Elaine Magee gives you positive advice about what foods you should be having almost every day.
Tell Me What to Eat If I Have Irritable Bowel Syndrome begins with an overview of IBS. Readers get a detailed yet completely understandable picture of the disease- a picture that is based on the latest medical information. Readers gain a better understanding of what IBS is and what they can do to limit the impact of its symptoms.
Also included are dozens of healthful, mouth-watering recipes, plus supermarket and restaurant advice and sample weekly menu plans that are totally grounded in reality.
Customer Reviews:
NOT Consistent with the current research.......2007-04-24
Unfortunately a well-intentioned author provides just another "me too" guide, which includes all the persistent misconceptions about the role of diet in IBS-D; D&C; and C subpopulations. Clearly not current with the literature and does not understand the processing of benign antigens by the gastroimmune system nor the process of oral tolerance (which is compromised in this condition leading to the symptoms). As with any of these books, authors do not yet understand the fact that to achieve a high-rate and significant degree of remission the diet must be patient-specific. This cannot be accomplished with the procedures recommended much less with the dietary advice provided. Probabilities dictate that you are bound to find some people who experience some relief from some of the recommendations, and many people who receive little relief. Some will experience worsening of their symptoms. IBS patients will be consuming foods and additives left and right which perpetuate their symptoms using these types of books for guidance which is well out of date.
Informative.......2007-01-09
This book was very informative but I already knew most of what was in the book from research of my own. I would suggest this book to anyone suffering from IBS who wants to learn more about this health issue. Great book.
Totally contridictory information.......2006-04-23
On page 40 she states, "55% of patients reported that bran made their IBH worse and yet the 1st recipe in "20 Recipe You Cannot Live Without" is Raisin Bran Muffins! Whereas in the definitive book on IBS "Eating for IBS" says stay away from whole wheat, milk, cheese, and red meat (which I followed and it solved our IBS problem), this book pushes whole wheat, whole milk, eggs, and dairy.
"Eating for IBS" helped. Following the recipes in this book would not.
Very useful guide.......2004-03-10
I have IBS/D and I found this book to be a very useful guide. It helped me to realize that I had been eating foods that were hurting me. The list of gassy foods is especially on-point and the most comprehensive one that I've seen yet. I've followed the recommendations in this book closely and noticed a marked difference in how I feel. A great guide to keep on hand in your kitchen.
Good book if it's not the only one you read........2002-08-28
This book focuses too much on just fiber and not enough on the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber and even a low-fat meal can be a deadly combination for an IBS sufferer. The recipes that the author considers invaluable for an IBS diet contain fat that is far in excess of what I could tolerate. I have a master's degree in nutrition and have also studied food chemistry and baking properties. There are other alternatives to the relativly high-fat and high insoluble fiber that this author recommends.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative.......2007-07-12
It is very well written in simple language which is easily absorbed by the reader
Simple and straightforward.......2007-02-28
I like this book for its simplicity and getting straight to the point of what to do, as well as what not to do, with this disease. I keep the list of things to avoid eating on my kitchen cabinet as a daily reminder. I found this book to be very helpful to me in my treatment and management of acid reflux, along with the information provided with my Prevacid prescription.
Shockingly helpful to most patients ..........2006-07-10
It is truly astonishing how many competent MDs treating acid reflux don't warn their patients of the dietary restrictions facing those who suffer from acid reflex. This applies not only to family doctors but incredibly ENTs! As such, patients are strongly advised to "understand their own bodies." All our bodies are different. Some patients will have strong negative reactions to chocolate. Others to orange juice. Some to red wine. Some to apple juice. To fix acid reflux problems - and it is almost always fixable - it is critical to understand what particular foods and beverages are causing it. This book will help properly identify.
don't buy this book - recipes NOT for acid reflux.......2006-07-08
Don't buy this book if you have acid reflux and want some helpful recipies. Many of the recipes include ingredients that most people with reflux CAN NOT have. You'll have more luck picking up a random cookbook and making changes yourself. Some of the general acid reflux info was OK, but since I bought it mainly for some good and easy recipes...total waste of money. It was pretty clear that the author just mindlessly slapped some stuff together and is not an expert in this area. Don't buy this book! I wish I hadn't.
Tell me what to eat if I have acid reflux.......2006-06-26
This is a wonderful book. It told me more than I thought it would. Just not what to eat but reason that this happens and what it can turn into. This was the best money I have spent in a long time. It also helped me with the Doctors visit and things I should have known already. Thanks a million.

Book Description
Discover the truth (and the falsehood) in the sound bites that rule so much of your life!
Today they're called sound bits, but they're older by far than sound bites, and they play a larger role in your life those pithy, quotable phrass that capture in a few words the wisdom of the world: " If it ain't broke, don't fix it." "Talk is cheap." "It doesn't matter what you believe, so long as you're sincere." "Love is blind." "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
In a few words wisdom in shorthand they speak truth won from generations of experience ( and we know from our mothers that "experience is the best teacher ").
These sayings survive because they work; which is why, in good times and bad, we use them to guide our actions and even to resolve intractable disputes ("Hey, let's just agree to disagree").
The problem is that most of them are not really true: they're half-truths. And when we rely on them uncritically ( as often we do ) they lead us out of one difficulty right smack into another.
That's why philosopher Montague Brown, author The One Minute Philosopher, has here taken up the task of considering over 75 of these popular sayings, plucking from each the wisdom they contain while showing just where they steer you wrong.
Presented here in an easy-to-read format are the common understandings of each saying, plus the additional insights you need to transform each from a dangerous cliché into a living truth that will improve your understanding and effectiveness in our world.
But this is mor than just a book of aphorisms; taken togehter, it's a delightful mini-course in philosophy, studied by means of the perennial wisdom that's been embodied in these sayings over the years. Hey, why not try it? After all, "The proof is in the pudding!"

good advice.......2006-02-13
This was very helpfull to me in learning what to eat and in simple to understand language. The dietetition I talked to kept
talking in sciencetific language That I did not even understand the food plan she game me. This author made sense to me. I don't eat at fast food places normily, but now I know what I can eat there if I have no other choice. She game me practical advice to navigating the supermarket, and how to get more fiber into my meals. I would recomend thios book to anyone who need a little more down to earth advice.
Is this Homer Simpson's version of diabetic advice?.......2003-09-20
I was absolutely shocked when I read this! I threw it in the garbage!I don't know what kind of diet she has looked at for diabetics but mine doesn't include cafe mocha with chocolate syrup,or cookies with white sugar, brown sugar, and syrup, or donuts! If I followed this book I have no idea what would happen to my blood sugar!my diet does not incorporate the things she says one can eat with diabetes, like 2 big slices of pizza at a meal! Come on now -get real!Ice cream bars? cookies?pizza?donuts? If you want to lower your blood sugar and get off meds forget this book!
what if.......2003-09-14
what if i have more than one problem.
what if i have diabetes, and high bood pressure, and and a colesteral problem.
i need a book to tell me what i can eat if i have all these things.
down to earth explanations for newly-diagnosed diabetics.......2003-02-16
This book has lots of practical, down-to earth explanations of interest to those with newly diagnosed with diabetes or those who cook for for diabetics.
It has hints on how to read nutritional labels, including the various names for "sugar", etc. We had an appointment with a nutritionist, and many things she suggested were mentioned and explained in this book.
The author talks about "drawing the line" on some healthy alternatives: she does not like whole wheat pasta. This, to me, is a realistic attitude. I try to cook as healthy as possible for my diabetic husband, but he just can't get used to one of his favorites, rice pudding, with brown rice. We won't have it very often, but when we do it will be the way he likes it--with white rice.
If you've read this far and are less-than-perfect at planning menus like I am, you might be interested in some simple menu plans for different caloric requirement diabetes diets at this website--this book plus these menus and some recipes from diabetes websites will get you off to a good start. You can fine tune things later:

"Mouth-watering recipes"?!.......2002-05-25
If your idea of "mouth-watering recipes that you can't live without" includes ingredients like 1/3 lowfat American processed cheese, lowfat or fat-free cream cheese and sour cream, lowfat frozen french fries, and powdered Ranch dip mix, then I guess this is the diabetic-diet advice book for you. As for me, eating lowfat American cheese is akin to gnawing on a PVC pipe - pure chemicals. And eating fat-free cream cheese is like eating your art gum eraser. I can live without such recipes. Essentially, this book is for people who are used to quickie recipes and fast food chains and want to still eat that way but try to control their blood glucose levels. The popularity of the Joanna Lund style of "cooking" certainly suggests that there are many who cannot give up such things as chocolate cream pie and are willing to accept the substitutes of fat-free, sugar-free chocolate pudding mix pie topped with Lite Cool Whip. For those who fall into this group, this book has a number of useful tables giving the calories, carbohydrates, fat, protein and salt values for prepackaged common brand name cereals, frozen desserts, cookies, pasta sauces, salad dressings, frozen entrees and frozen pizza. The same breakdowns are also provided for restaurant chain food, such as Denny's, Jack-in-the-Box, Wendy's, MacDonald's, Burger King, Subway, Kentucky Fried Chicken and donut shops. However, if one doesn't eat this way, has type II diabetes and wants to figure out a glucose-controlling diet, this book is worthless. I think this is important to point out because I purchased this book based on the two glowing reviews and am now out the purchase price. Indeed, the book does try to take a postive attitude in telling diabetes what they CAN eat, but the general information can be gotten in much more detail in other books. I would make a recommendation, but I am in the early stages of this research and have not yet found a diabetic diet advice book that I would whole-heartedly recommend for those who avoid processed food. So far, the best has been "The Diabetes Food and Nutrition Bible" which did offer some useful recipes, but even that book has menu plans that include frozen entrees, canned fruit cocktail, frozen waffles and margarine.

Book Description
A sophisticated collection of fierce, tender fiction marked by absurdist humor, these striking short stories skillfully explore themes of war, seduction, and censorship. An Eden emerges from the wreckage and destruction of burning books in "The Library." "Boys" sets a weary general and his sons against a village of determined mothers, and "I Live with You" brings a chaos from an uninvited guest. Filled with originality and lyricism, this collection is a must for science fiction and adventure fans.

Unbelieveable.......2007-08-15
I didn't care for this book.
Sex does not equal love.
Alexa learns to be a pirate in three months. come on. And the crew follow her. For that time period, even more unbelieveable.
Adam was awful. He used her for sex. Had sex with other people besides her.
Placed her on the island for MONTHS never saw her while he was off having sex.
This was awful. Enough said
lady pirate book.......2006-07-13
The Vixen is a lady pirate so she and Adam don't compare to the author's other couples (except the enticing beginning). The split personalites throughout the story gets to be a bit much. And they spend time away from each other that leaves a void in the romance. The action scenes are exciting & the steamy sex scenes, of course.
I like the LADY not sure about the VIXEN.......2006-01-11
I loved book one THE LADY not so much the VIXEN book two, but over all it was a very interesting different kind of writting from Connie Mason of course great love scenes.. There isn't much i can say on My Lady Vixen, its not that its bad I just didn't get that much enjoyment from it but i would give book one THE LADY 5 stars and book two THE VIXEN 3 stars, its like another reviewer said its like 2 books in 1 with the same characters of course....
If you do deceide to get this book I hope you enjoy it...(:D)
Excellent Story.......2003-03-19
I thought this story was so great I couldn't put it down until finished.
like two different books.......2003-03-12
connie mason's stlye of passion and action has never failed to keep me interested in her work. Her books vary across a wide range of historical time periods, creating a nice variety. "My lady vixen" seemed like two books in one to me, one i felt uneasy about and disliked and the other i really liked.
"my lady vixen" is actually told in two books and it's best to view the book this way. our hero, adam foxworth, is a nobelman who is hell bent on revenge and sees alexa ashley as his instrument to achieve this revenge. Kidnapping her and forcing her to become his mistress starts this unique, if odd, tale off.
this work travels across the atlantic several times as Alexa and Adam meet and part several times. The fox, a pirate fighting the british, vies with adam for alexa's heart.
As i said i felt like this was two entirely different books in one work. adam foxworth wavers continually through this book from a loving, aminable person to a vicious, coldhearted jerk. He repeatedly attacks alexa sexually with a few disturbing scenes that are played down to a huge degree which left a unrealistic flavor in the book. The "plot twists" are not particularly earth shattering or original. you see them coming miles away.
The general storyline is interesting and keep me involved in the book but alexa's stint as vixen was probably the most interesting part of the book. before that she is so weighed down and domnated by various men even i felt like screaming. i think a great book is in here somewhere but it's so bogged down by weird character reversals that it's hard to find.
for a fun read on some lazy afernoon i give this a thumbs up but for being a book i'll keep around for awhile i have to say check out something else.

BACK COVER REVIEW.......2007-02-06
Charlotte Amberley was determined to wage war on the insufferably arrogant Lord Stoneleigh. After all, he'd been absolutely ghastly to her two dearest friends, and it was high time he had his comeuppance! But her plans were thwarted when she found that she was far from immune to the rakish nobleman's captivating charms. Now, a pawn in a plot that could bring about Stoneleigh's ruin. Charlotte was torn between sweet revenge and the unexpected tenderness he's awakened in her own untrusting heart!
From the moment the beguiling, brown-eyed beauty descended on Brighton, Stoneleigh knew he'd found the woman his heart was waiting for. Yet while the incomparable Charlotte seemed to return his feelings, he couldn't shake the suspicion that she might be in league with his foes. Determined to unmask the truth, Stoneleigh hatched his own scheme - only to find the table turned after they'd shared one shockingly passionate kiss...and another and another! Swept up in a whirlwind of scandal and intrigue, the smitten nobleman could only hope that true love would triumph in the end.
Great!.......2000-02-25
I read this book about a month and a half ago and I know it was good because I still think about it occasionally. The plot twists added an interesting element to an already wonderful love story. By the end I was really rooting for Charlotte and Stoneleigh to work it out. I do agree with the previous reveiwer that Selena's character was not necessary to the book but I also didn't think she detracted from or cluttered up the story in any way. I would definitely recomend this book to anyone interested in Regency fiction. It is a prime example of the genre at its best.
Finally a heroine worth cheering for!.......1999-08-04
I must say that I was pleased with the heroine of this book. I loved that she was a strong-willed woman who put stoneleigh in his place. For once the female character did not succumb to the will of the man merely because he held her close. I loved that charlotte had spunk and did not change from an independent spirit, to a shy, demure woman.
I did not really see a need for selena's character. She had nothing to do with story. In the end, this knight character whom she was to end up with was not even explored in the book. All of a sudden this character was introduced and not heard about until the end. Selena did not play an important role in the book. But that aside, I loved the book. I was not disappointed at all. It met every one of my expectations. I was also glad to see that the father did not suddenly become a saint because of one good act. I mean he was found innocent of thaxted's schemes, but he was not suddenly absolved of deceiving elizabeth and playing with her fragile mind. I find that novels tend to make the ending too perfect, but this book ended on a sweet yet tart note. I loved it.
