Customer Reviews:
A vanished culture.......2006-10-26
Rezorri writes of the five people who shaped his life and were entwined with the life and culture of Bukovinia;a country that was a crossroads for east and west;that had absorbed all the mish mash of languages and customs that had passed through and decided to stay. Rezorris family found themselves there at the tail end of the Hapsburg empire of which Bukovinia was part. His memoirs start between the first and second world wars;Bukovinia being ceded to Romania, then later to Soviet Russia.Always in the background is the sad knowledge that Bukovinia, with its gypsies, jews, colonials and uniqueness,is doomed by politics. If not Hitler, then Stalin. It made no difference.
Rezorri returns to his old home and finds the vibrancy and life has been squeezed out of the place;made sterile by the drabness of communism after being exterminated in the war.The racial tensions and diversity of customs and languages that gave Bukovinia its vibrancy, wiped out for some skewed political ideal. It makes you realize that-as long as it doesn't boil over into holocaust-racial and social frictions are part of what makes humanity click.
A great book;many of the anecdotes and reflections feature in arguably Rezorris greatest work,'The death of my brother Abel'.
Brilliant, evocative memoir.......2005-11-11
Gregor Von Rezzori has quickly become a favorite writer and his works, companions in my life journey. The Snows of Yesteryear is a stylized memoir that reads much more like fiction. It is a non-linear memoir that has little regard to time or place as Rezzori jumps wherever his thoughts and reminiscences lead him. This jumping around leads to a lack of clarity and unevenness that at times hurt the overall work, however these relatively rare moments are offset by beautifully painful passages that evoke not only lost moments in his life, but in the readers as well. These moments are the heart of Von Rezzori's talent, at his best he can distill a fragment of time, or a time period down to its existential core, giving the reader that joyous, yet painful realization of a precious moment and the pain of its passing... and subsequently our passing as well.
Von Rezzori is an excellent prose stylist........1998-02-12
This is an exceptional book. Everyone in von Rezzori's family is fascinating--including his governess, who was a friend of Mark Twain. The Bukovina, where the author grew up, is remote, strange, and beautiful. The politics of the period are byzantine, yet von Rezzori clarifies beautifully. His writing style is fresh, vivid, easy. He has a cosmopolitan vocabulary. If you like this book, definitely read his MEMOIRS OF AN ANTI-SEMITE, also very fine.

A Quintesential Masterpiece of Verbose Grandeur .......2005-11-24
The Snows of Yesteryear enlightens my every sense. I found myself getting lost in the mastery of each page of Oldsey's epic novel. The story kept my attention, while I became lost in the lives of the subtley developed characters. This book has all the qualities of Hemmingway, with a modern tinge. Oldsey's aspect gives every essence of skiing in the gentile hills of Europe. I would call this my best read of 2004.

American Prof Battles Terrorist Intrigue.......2001-08-19
I've never visited Europe, never skiied, never been a spy, but this extraordinary novel makes me want to do it--except for the spying, which apparently can be hazardous to your health where international terrorists are concerned. Where did Bernard Oldsey unearth these amazing details? Has he been there, done that?
Without eating, I almost had to burp, and without drinking, I got a nice, relaxed buzz. And then I got scared! Professor Curtis Fielding, the main character, partook of the best that Europe had to offer while ferreting out the worst. What gorgeous description! What foul, rotten misdeeds! Anyone who lives for intelligent writing, densely woven plots, and plain sensual pleasure will love this book. I did!

Book Description
Being a bodyguard is not all sunglasses, dark suits and muscle. This book debunks the myths and stereotypes and describes the realities of protecting celebrities, executives and foreign dignitaries. Executive protection specialist Benny Mares tells you how to get in on the ground floor of this expanding field.
Customer Reviews:
Satisfactory.......2007-08-31
Book is okay. But I would urge anyone to enroll in a bodyguard academy. Book doesn't cover the essential aspects of being a bodyguard.
Okay, but dated.......2005-12-26
The content is good, but dated. This was written in 1994 and has not been updated. This book is a very high level overview of the field.
protection teaser.......2005-12-17
ever want to learn more about a subject?, well after reading this tease on protection you will, It is very insightful but leaves you wanting more details on the protection subject.
Not Enough of Anything.......2004-10-17
I thought this book would be helpful for either offering tips on certain tasks (e.g., searching for bugs, defensive driving). There is absolutely no substance! Topics are covered at a very high level, and too much space is given to mildly pertinent anecdotes. The grammer could also use a once-over. Finally, the book is way too brief.
Keep searching - there are better books on this subject.
Great for Cops.......2003-01-13
... This book is the first piece of training I assign to my new employees, all of which are cops. The cons of hiring aggressive warriors (cops) are offset as this book clearly explains the new concept that capture of the enemy is NOT the goal, but rather, the invisible protection of the client. This is very valuable, and all for less than [price]! Great book!...
Book Description
At the start of the new millennium, violence continues to grow and acts of national and international terrorism abound. This new edition is an authoritative tool that extends years of knowledge and shared experience to emergency response personnel and those tasked with protection and prevention. This second edition contains a reorganization of chapters with updated and greatly expanded information. The most notable expansions are in the chapters on surveillance, counter-surveillance, surveillance photography, physical security, and the bodyguard function. In addition, the authors present unique chapters that offer the reader detailed information on bombings and bomb threats, kidnapping and hostage taking, defensive and offensive driving, communications, the sniper threat, and planning protection. Appendices offer highly informative support material in the form of a review of the techniques of the urban guerilla, a sample executive protection program, and a protection plan for a visiting government official. The book has been prepared with the greatest attention to both textual quality and production details. It is generously illustrated with photographs, drawings, and diagrams throughout to completely clarify the topics discussed. This new edition should serve well as both a learning tool and a source of reference. It will be an outstanding addition to the library of any police or security professional interested in terrorist attacks.

Three months after she took office, Caroline Winters lost her husband Justin in a tragic plane crash. Now, three months later, Caroline struggles to deal with her loss while performing her duties as President of the United States. All while fighting a cut-throat campaign by her own vice-president to prove her unfit for office so that he can assume the presidency. A campaign that appears to be working, since even her senior advisor is advising her to take a temporary medical leave of absence. If only she had proof of the phone calls with Justin's voice or the letter she received from him. Surely she can't be imagining all of this...can she? Is it possible that her grief really has her mind playing tricks on her as everyone else believes? Just as she prepares to take the leave of absence, her world once again turns upside down when her husband is found alive in a Mexico City hospital. He's lost a good bit of his memory, but Caroline doesn't care. She's just happy to have a second chance to repair some of the problems in their marriage. It doesn't take long for Caroline to realize that Justin has changed since the accident, and not just due to his memory loss. Not surprising, really. A close brush with death would probably make a lot of people reassess their lives and priorities. Part of her longs to fling herself into her husband's arms and enjoy their newfound intimacy, but another part of her holds back. What if she lets down her guard and gives herself completely and he regains his memory? Will things revert back to the way they were before? It's a risk Caroline isn't sure she should take, for she might not survive emotionally if she loses him again. Of course, if someone has his or her way, she might not survive at all. Someone wants Caroline out of the way, and not just out of the White House -- dead. It appears that person is someone in her own inner circle. Someone she trusts completely. But who? Is it her senior advisor, Rupert, the man she views almost like a father? One of her secret service agents? Or worse, her own husband?
When I awarded JOHN DOE ON HER DOORSTEP, the first book in The Enforcers series, a Perfect 10 last month, I never expected that this book would not only equal the last one, but surpass it. Yet that's exactly what Ms. Webb has accomplished in the second book, EXECUTIVE BODYGUARD. Therefore, I find myself -- who rarely awards more than four or five Perfect 10's in an entire year -- in the unique position of awarding well deserved back to back Perfect 10's.
As with JOHN DOE ON HER DOORSTEP, EXECUTIVE BODYGUARD gets high marks for delivering a tightly paced series romance with the feel of a longer single title. An emotion-grabbing contemporary romance with nail biting suspense and the watch-your-back intensity of a political thriller, EXECUTIVE BODYGUARD has all the ingredients in first-rate fiction of any genre -- but it's a romance, which, for me, makes it even better.
Caroline's efforts to balance her personal life with her presidential duties is realistically portrayed. She understands the importance of her position as the first woman to hold the office and knows that her performance will affect other women's ability to compete in future elections. The pressure on her to succeed in what is essentially a man's arena is enormous. Readers will not find it difficult to empathize with her and will therefore pull for her all the way. Readers will also love the hero. As much as I'd like to gush, I can't really say too much about him for fear of giving things away. Those who have read JOHN DOE ON HER DOORSTEP (if you haven't, go grab a copy now!) will have gotten a glimpse of him there. As wonderful a hero as Adam proved then, this hero stands out even more. His determination to protect Caroline, coupled with his desire to be the man she needs, but believes he can never be, melted my heart.
EXECUTIVE BODYGUARD moves at a quick, but steady pace; with each turn of the page, the suspense builds along with the sexual tension and the emotional connection between the hero and heroine. Secondary characters are well written and add to the mystery because, like Caroline, the reader doesn't know whom to trust.
Though EXECUTIVE BODYGUARD stands well on its own, you won't want to miss the first book in this outstanding series. Once you've finished both books, you'll be itching to get your hands on the final book in the trilogy, MAN OF HER DREAMS, which should be on bookstore shelves soon. A fabulous book by an author destined for future NYT Bestseller lists, don't miss EXECUTIVE BODYGUARD.

From the supplier: Security professionals charged with protecting a company's top level executive find the task too difficult that they seldom perform their jobs efficiently. Experts suggest several guidelines for helping a security man do his or her job more efficiently. Three important recommendations are investigating potential threats to the chief executive, increasing the executive's awareness and desire for security, and improving the security person's relationships with the executive and the persons the latter often deal with.

From the supplier: Police officers who are engaged in executive protection need to undergo specific training exclusively designed for top organizations' heads. Executive protection specialists must use the gun only as a last resort. This would help security officers get rid of the "guard mentality," in which they are trained to use a gun. Many executives view police officers as ideal for executive protection because of their discipline, observation skills and weapons training.
