Book Description

When sixteen-year-old Peter Hithersay discovers that his father is not the affable Englishman married to his mother but an East German political dissident with whom she had a brief affair in the 1960s, he travels, in search of his past, to Leipzig. There he falls in love with a beautiful young woman who is beginning to question the way her society is governed. But their romance ends quickly and badly when his scheme to smuggle her out of the country goes awry and he is forced to return to England.

When the two Germanies are reunited nineteen years later, Peter goes back to look for the woman he has never stopped loving. But his only clues are the nickname he gave her, Snowleg, and the archives of the state that drove them apart.

In Snowleg, Nicholas Shakespeare explores to devastating effect the unassailable dictates of love and politics.

4 out of 5 stars Two trips to Leipzig.......2006-07-31

English schoolboy Peter Hithersay learns that his true father is not his mother's husband, but an East German dissident whom she met briefly in a music competition in Leipzig. Visiting Leipzig himself several years later in search of his father, Peter has a similar encounter with a young German woman nicknamed Snowleg (the only name he knows), but this ends badly and his other search is fruitless. It is not until nineteen years later, well after the Wall has fallen, that Peter visits Leipzig again and is able to find some resolution to both his quests.

This is a strongly narrated book, with an excellent sense of social atmosphere, mostly well-drawn characters, and enough mystery to keep one reading compulsively. Peter's life in between the two Leipzig visits, finding success as a doctor and lover but little happiness as a person, is especially convincing, although he is not very likeable in this phase. Probably the best part of the book comes just at the end of this nineteen-year sojourn when he takes a very old dying woman as a patient. Although the fact that she is able to give him the first clues to start him once more on the trail of Snowleg stretches coincidence a little far, the quality of the relationship itself is so tender that it doesn't matter.

But once he goes back to Leipzig to hunt for Snowleg, the texture changes. Mostly now he meets with strangers, interviewing them, looking for clues. Too much gets told; not enough shown. At the point where most novels would be concerned with emotional resolution, this one suddenly reverts to belated exposition. This alters the pace of the book to the point where even the beautiful and surprisingly subtle ending cannot work as it should. A pity, but it is an absorbing story even so.

I find myself thinking of Ian McEwan, most especially his ATONEMENT. There, as here, a single selfish action causes suffering which must wait several decades before it can be atoned for. In both books, too, it is left to the reader to judge whether the atonement is adequate, and I find this a little bit of a problem. But SNOWLEG, like the McEwan book and Shakespeare's earlier THE DANCER UPSTAIRS, is a serious novel in that it raises significant moral and political questions in personal terms.

5 out of 5 stars Identity and redemption behind the Berlin Wall.......2005-05-22

Nicholas Shakespeare's "Snowleg" is a novel about the search for identity and redemption. Its hero Peter Hithersay's young life first comes to a sudden standstill when his mother stuns him with a confession that just about erases his past and leaves his self identity shaken and confused. No sooner has he set out on an obsessive mission to recover his past than he meets and fall in love with a young East German girl who desperately needs his help to escape the East and whom he knows only as Snowleg. In a familiar moment of weakness, he rejects her and spends the rest of his life regretting and trying to atone for this one mistake. Whose forgiveness he needs - hers or his own - is a moot point and a theme of the novel.

For sure, life for Peter loses all semblence of normality until his soul is settled. Till then, he sleepwalks through life as in a state of suspended animation. He conveniently forgets he has a loving family back home in England. As a medical student in Germany, he wanders through a series of half-hearted affairs with some of the most selfish and unsavoury women you can possibly imagine and even manages to sire a son. Only when he connects with an old lady he is treating does he unknowingly stumble upon the first clue that will lead him to one of two people he is searching for...and then not. Find out for yourself. Shakespeare's reliance on chance and coincidence to make this plot connection is possibly a weakness but one we all too readily forgive for the romantic resonance it brings to Peter's story.

Those who have read "Stasiland", Anna Funder's wonderful piece of investigative journalism, will also appreciate the heightened sense of drama brought upon by the post-1989 confession of those who had spied for the regime and lived through a chapter of recent history from behind the Walls. The cataclysm visited upon the lives of East Germans since the Wall came down couldn't be more contrasting against the relative stability of England.

The parallel between Peter's story and that of his mother's says something about the cyclicity and the folly of love and life. She has learnt to let go. He must do too. One's self identity can only be redeemed from within, the novelist seems to be saying.

"Snowleg" is a beautifully written novel. Definitely one to be read and savoured. Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Could not appreciate this book........2005-03-18

Despite the praise that has been heaped on this book, I can't say that I liked it much. The author seems well acquainted with East Germany both before and after reunification, and sometimes he gives fine descriptions of atmospheric settings; but to my mind these were often over-written, forced or pretentious. The same goes for the description of often rather seedy and grotesque characters, even given that the Stasi went in for (to put it mildly) seedy and grotesque operations; and there is one incident which is just too gratuitously disgusting for words. Nor did I take very much to Peter, the central character. True, he is supposed to be a flawed human being, riddled for years with guilt for not having taken the risk to smuggle out to the West a girl with whom, as a young visitor to the GDR, he had had a short affaire; but I find little that is attractive about his personality or about his relationships with all except one old woman. The book is slow - once Peter is on a trail of interviews to find the girl, his interlocutors are all deliberately and tantalizingly slow to pass on any information they have: that in itself becomes monotonous. There are too many rather improbable coincidences. There are references near the end of the book to certain incidents earlier on which you are likely to have missed unless you have read the book very closely and have a good memory. It's the sort of book which one really ought to read twice, which I sometimes like to do under similar circumstances, but had no desire to do in this case.

5 out of 5 stars "Remorse. The bird that never settles.".......2004-10-04

In one of the most elegantly written and carefully constructed love stories in recent memory, Nicholas Shakespeare introduces Peter Hithersay, who, on his sixteenth birthday, learns that "Daddy" is not his father. In Leipzig, East Germany, for a vocal competition, his mother had met and loved his biological father very briefly, only to see him arrested, and taken away forever. Curious about Germany, Peter spends his gap year in Hamburg and applies for and is accepted to its medical school, where he lives for the next six years.

During his third year of medical school, members of a traveling mime troupe invite him to accompany them on a trip to Leipzig, where his unnamed father had been arrested. Though he has been warned about the secret police, the constant spying on foreigners, and the dangers of going off on his own, the 22-year-old Peter, nevertheless, falls passionately in love with a young East German, whose Icelandic nickname, "Snjolaug," sounds to him like "Snowleg." At the end of his four-day trip to Leipzig, however, he leaves her, only to spend the next twenty years dreaming about finding her again.

Peter's search for Snowleg, and secondarily, for his father alternate with flashbacks and memories, as the relationship of Peter and Snowleg unfolds. The role of the secret police in their separation and the conflicts between the original ideal of communism and its later cynical implementation are shown through Uwe and Hesse, two secret policemen, who appear in the prologue and in the conclusion and provide fresh perspective on the action, elevating this novel above the typical love story.

The vibrancy of Shakespeare's prose makes every page of this novel a delight to read. Filled with irony and, often, humor, the dialogue comes alive. Unforgettable descriptions, especially of the darkness, cold, and soot in Leipzig, reveal feelings as well as convey information. To Peter, listening to the radio, a love song "had red eyes and ran furtively across his mind...It was a rat dressed up as a promise." Repeating motifs--a van with a fish painted on it, a dying deer, the story of Sir Bedevere, a fur coat, and the bones of a muskrat--echo throughout the novel and connect scenes symbolically.

Like most romances, the story relies on coincidence and fortuitous accident, but Shakespeare's writing is so strong and the story is so exciting that even the most jaded reader will willingly accept the implausibilities. In the UK, where the book has been out since January, the judging panel for the Man Booker Prize has selected this novel for its longlist for best novel of the year. Mary Whipple

        Product Description

History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

        5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

        4 out of 5 stars A misleading title.......2000-12-14

Riley Fortune is out on bail though he is being charged with the murder of Mike Dodd, a young construction worker. Months ago, when the tragic "accident" occurred on the site of the new medical center, Riley went the extra mile to comfort Angelica Dodd, sister to the victim. He discontinued contact with her the morning after. Now, months later, he finds himself an expectant father and unable to use his legendary charm to persuade the hard-working waitress to marry him for the sake of their child. Angelica was crushed by Riley's disappearance but she forced herself to go on alone. But now that Riley has discovered the existence of their child, she finds herself plagued by his constant presence and all too tempted to give in to his proposal.

The title of this story is certainly misleading. Whether Riley is truly Angelica's enemy is never in question because it is not murder that stands between them. Instead, it is the circumstances surrounding their night together that get in the way of the development of their relationship. Riley is a man who is known for being selfish but there is a gentleness he hides, which Angelica initially brought out upon her brother's death. Throughout the story, Angelica tries to reconcile the Riley she loves with the black reputation he has supposedly earned. Though she uncovers evidence concerning her brother's murder, that aspect of the story remains secondary to the bond that develops between her and Riley. Cross displays ample talent in writing this story of a man who is more than he seems and the woman who is able to see exactly what he is.

Although I can't believe any REAL covert agent would take the time to have sex in the middle of an OP.
The adrenaline of self-preservation would pose a strong deterent.

The action was great - the characters also excellent - the villians just a bit threatening - loved the blow-up with Betty
        - most excellent plot - the sex was just a bit over-done but the passion was there to be felt.

I was just a bit suspecious of Jules but could understand his conversation [as such] with Clive. I liked the way Rio's and Sass's past unintentionly touched each other. If only. . . .

Never did find out how the virus was handled for sure. And Ellis sure sneaked out from under the trouble brewing.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - except for all the PMS - yeah, right! she should have ended up PG.

Kansas "Sass" Hawthorne is a highly trained, professional thief who works for the FBI. Sass works alone, and she likes it that way. Her past plays a large part in her preference for solitary missions. Her mother and sister died in an explosion when she was growing up, and her father has been in jail for years. She refuses to risk losing anyone else. What's her solution? Sass won't let anyone get close - not professionally, and not personally. She makes a partial exception for Jules Mannheim. He's not just her boss; he's the man who took her in when she lost everyone else in her life. Now Jules is asking her to make another exception. He wants her to go undercover with another agent.

Stewart Rio also works for the FBI, although he's not in the same division as Sass. Intellectually, he knows that agents like Special Agent Hawthorne play important roles in the agency, but he has a strong aversion to thieves. And now his boss wants him to work with one? Stewart has been in charge of the Miles Dawson case for a long time. His team has worked hard, and he doesn't want some special agent from Covert Ops to waltz in and take over his case. Especially not Kansas Hawthorne! Stewart is a by-the-book kind of agent. He doesn't need to work with a maverick like Sass.

Sass isn't any happier about the prospect of working with stuffy, unimaginative Stewart Rio. She plans each mission in excruciating detail. She goes in, meets her objective, and gets out. A partner throws in too many variables, and Sass doesn't like unknowns. But the Miles Dawson case is too important for either agent to take lightly. It will be dangerous and it will be difficult, but going deep undercover together is their best chance to take him down. Sass and Stewart are posing as a married couple and their cover has to be impenetrable. There will be no privacy. On the plus side, there's no need to fake the chemistry between them. But will their act be convincing enough to keep them alive? Will they find the evidence they need to put Miles Dawson away permanently? And what will happen between them when their mission is complete?

ENEMY HUSBAND is the kind of story that really gets your adrenaline flowing. It's action packed and sizzling hot, with some intensely emotional moments. Stewart and Sass both have plenty of reasons to want to take Miles Dawson down for good and some of them are personal. Both can trace traumatic events that were turning points in their lives back to this one despicable man. I hoped they would not only end his reign of terror, but also recover from the damage he caused in both of their lives and emerge stronger than ever. I also hoped they would learn to love and trust again. Most of all, I hoped they wouldn't simply go their separate ways once the assignment was complete. Very highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Who Needs Enemies?.......2006-11-14

This book is a wonderful story about relationships that can build us up as well as tear us down. The main character, Amber Thompson, is at a difficult time in her life dealing with a wayward husband, a new love interest, family, friends, and her job situation. However, she manages to handle everything like a sophisticated lady including her three growing sons. Told with doses of humor and sarcasm, this was a truly enjoyable read that was hard to put down from a debut author.

Don't be discouraged by the size of the book (over 500 pages) because it'll be worth it when you reach the surprise ending. Gigi has an amazing imagination that will capture and hold your attention to the very last word. As an avid reader, I recommend this book to those looking for mystery, romance, suspense, and everything in-between. It'll leave you asking that age old question: With friends and family like this, who needs enemies?

Amber and Sean Thompson have been married for twelve years and have produced three sons. Currently at a crossroad in their marriage because of Sean's infidelities, Amber wants a divorce. Presently separated but living under the same roof, Amber begins to create a life of her own by dating. Unbeknownst to her, Sean has others plans. Within this tale of love and lust, family and friends are an integral part of the relationship of the Thompson's and their stories are also at the forefront in FAMILY, FRIENDS, HUSBANDS AND LOVERS...THE BEST ENEMIES by Gigi.

Ernestine and Jose' Mercado of West Indian and Latin descent respectively, produced eleven children in which Amber is the second oldest. Raised in a life of privilege and luxury, at age seventeen Amber moved out of the family home, attended college and made a life of her own. It was then she met Sean who is fifteen years older. So taken with Amber, because of her beauty and sharp wit, Sean wined and dined and waited until she was of legal age to marry her. Sean does not come from Amber's world; he is from a Bronx project much to her parents' consternation. However, Amber hobnobs well within both worlds. Added to this mix are an eclectic list of characters from Amber's siblings, to her uppity West Indian aunts and friends. Amber's friends include Monica, her best friend from childhood, and Denise, a more recent acquaintance. Monica is from an upper class family, she is a business owner and she despises Denise. Denise is a single mother of an autistic child and a welfare recipient. Once Amber steps into the dating scene she hooks up with a filthy rich corporate raider and when all of their worlds collide it is volatile.

FAMILY, FRIENDS, HUSBANDS AND LOVERS...THE BEST ENEMIES is a whirlwind ride with a family that harbors a deep-rooted secret. A secret so cruel it has shaped Amber into the person she is. Amber loves her family, loathes her aunts and hates the pretentious world in which she was raised. At work she is smart and sharp but is disgusted by her boss who is basically beneath her and her coworkers educationally and takes credit for the work they produce.

The book FAMILY, FRIENDS, HUSBANDS AND LOVERS...THE BEST ENEMIES at times is hilarious because of Amber's sarcasm and the reactions she receives. A lot of the drama and other antics are unbelievable but at the same time probable. My only issue was the constant designer name-dropping. I understand this was a set up to comprehend the amount of wealth the Mercado family had, but it was too much. While the detail of every piece of clothing was overdone, the author did provide just the right amount of descriptions of locales to give the reader a visual feel of the inhabitants and the world in which they existed. The novel FAMILY, FRIENDS, HUSBANDS AND LOVERS...THE BEST ENEMIES is a constant drama-filled love story, which highlights lust, jealousy and how a past act can shape a person for better or worse unbeknownst to others.

All that I can say is: "This is one of the best books I have read in a very long time."

I was able to relate to so much of the story, and I am very sure every other reader will feel the same after reading this book.

Don't let the size of the book discourage you. This book will have you up at 2am in the morning trying to find out what will happen next.

She brings you into the story. I love the bonding that her and her siblings shared. I can relate because I have a large family and my parents are from two different backgrounds as well.

I'm from the Bronx therefore I can relate to the places that the author mentions throughout the book. I found that very interesting.

This sister really put her heart into this story, the love, the family, the sex, the job the husband, the works.

I must say as I write this review, I am just excited. I for one don't write reviews unless the story moves me as this one did.

I am on page 366 and the story sitll has me going. I was bursting inside, I just couldn't stand it anymore. I just had to share this book before I finished that is how well it is written. I want everyone to read this book now!

Please don't miss out on this good read. A sister from the Bronx
