Book Description
Mass-produced images have long been produced and used in India by religious and nationalist movements – the emergence of Indian-run chromolithograph presses in the late 1870s initiated a vast outpouring that have come to dominate many of India’s public and domestic spaces.Drawing on years of archival research, interviews with artists and publishers, and the ethnographic study of their rural consumers, Christopher Pinney traces the intimate connections between the production and consumption of these images and the struggle against colonial rule. The detailed output of individual presses and artists is set against the intensification of the nationalist struggle, the constraints imposed by colonial state censorship, and fifty years of Indian independence. The reader is introduced to artists who trained within colonial art schools, others whose skills reflect their membership of traditional painting castes, and yet others who are self-taught former sign painters.Photos of the Gods is the first comprehensive history of India’s popular visual culture. Combining anthropology, political and cultural history, and the study of aesthetic systems, and using many intriguing and unfamiliar images, the book shows that the current predicament of India cannot be understood without taking into account this complex, fascinating, and until now virtually unseen, visual history.

Dior.......2005-04-24
Francoise Giroud's book about Christian Dior is one of the best studies of the great couturier and his fashion house. The text is highly informative and there are plentiful illustrations and photos (color and black and white) of Dior's creations, clients, friends, homes, etc, in short everything that was part of his life. There is also information about the designers who worked for the house after Dior's death, Yves Saint-Laurent and Marc Bohan.
What I didn't like about the book is that there are a number of close up photos of gowns. Close ups are great so that one can see the details, but they're pretty useless if not accompanied by a full length view of the garment.

Provides the inside story at the House of Dior.......2002-08-06
Christian Dior: The Early Years provides the inside story at the House of Dior, from its introduction of the 'New Look' to 1957, upon Dior's sudden death. When Christian Dior presented his first collection, the young designer presented clothing which featured narrow waists and beautiful evening dresses: a new look for the fashion world of the mid1940s. He drew each dress himself and his designs would change the fashion world of his times. The oversized presentation of this volume allows for fullpage displays of his works accompanying a biography of his life and achievements.
A MEMORABLE VISIT WITH DIOR.......2002-06-12
Born in a small village in Normandy, Christian Dior did not hesitate to disobey a parental injunction to undertake a "serious occupation." He knew what he wanted and fled to Paris where he became a designer at Robert Piguet.
The City of Lights was gray in 1946; there had been the war, German occupation, and rationing. But, luck was with Dior. He met the country's richest and most powerful industrialist, Marcel Boussac, who offered to back the young designer. Space became available at 28-30 Avenue Montaigne, an address well known to fashion aficionados today.
In 1947 Dior introduced his first collection, and the world was ready for his innovative return to the feminine figure with narrow waists, long skirts, and an attractive bustline. The rest, as they say, is history.
All interested in the world of fashion will delight in this detailed history of the workings of Dior's fashion house, and the remarkable people who worked for him in developing a boutique and perfume which would enjoy worldwide acclaim. Also included are stories of his famous clients, such as Marlene Dietrich, Lauren Bacall, Rita Hayworth, Ingrid Bergman, and the Duchess of Windsor.
Enriched with some 100 illustrations this keepsake volume concludes with "Monsieur Dior's Fashion Vocabulary" and a timeline noting events after Dior's death in 1957 to the present day.

World-class achievements in clothing & style.......2002-04-12
Christian Dior: The Early Years 1947-1957 by Esmeralda de Rethy (daughter of Princess Liliane of Belgium who was one of Christian Dior's very first clients) and fashion historian Jean-Louis Perreau is an incredible, superbly illustrated and informative coffee table book providing a vivid fashion record perfectly capturing the founding of an empire of style in the post-World War II decade. Full-page photographs, some color, some black and white, many nearly half a century old, adorn the pages along with Dior's original sketches and commentary. The text traces the travails, efforts, and world-class achievements in clothing, style, and love of life in this high society treasury. Christian Dior is very highly recommended reading for students of 20th Century fashion history in general, and the influential contributions of Christian Dior in particular.

Les Portes Tordues (The Twisted Doors): The Scariest Way in the World to Learn French! is an exciting book and audio CD that teaches French by capturing and immersing students into an intriguing mystery. The author, Dr. Kathie Dior, has created this bilingual 46-chapter mystery adventure with line-by-line French-English text while uniquely integrating French vocabulary, grammar, expressions, tests and answers into each chapter. The multi-illustrated book is accompanied by a riveting read-along audio CD narrated by a native French university instructor. An extensive French-English glossary is included. Created for beginning and intermediate students ages 12 and up and adult self-learners, Les Portes Tordues is currently being taught by the author at the Purdue University Gifted Education Resource Institute.
Customer Reviews:
Fun!.......2007-07-12
If you're an absolute beginner, you cannot learn French from this book alone. Is is fun and interesting though to progress through the story and find out what happens. There's lot of good vocabulary to learn.
Simply oustanding!.......2007-06-19
I found this book to be one of the best French learning tools I've encountered so far. It's simple and yet complex enough for adult learners. Together with the audio CD it provides a very interesting and unique way to learn this beautiful language.
Great way to learn French!.......2007-05-30
This book is a great way to learn French, although it isn't for immediate beginners. The book is about a scary story in French with English translations and a few grammar tools to help you out after each passage. THere also is a cd with which the story is read, which is a little cheesy with the voices all read by one person, but is good for verbal learning in different pitches, paces and styles. I wish that there was more grammar in the book to learn from or to write sentances instead of just words, in English and French, but overall i think this book is a good way to help you learn french. I am learning this to help me student teach in France and i feel it is helping me not only with grammar, but fluency and reading. I would recommend this book, because it is a fun and different way to learn French.
I was curious.......2007-03-10
I had always seen this book and CD advertised, so I finally ordered it. It is for advanced beginners or new intermediates as it claims. I recommend it for people at these levels because for then not only is the text challenging for them, the CD will let them HEAR spoken French early on in their learning. That ends up to be everyone's weakness, understanding French people. The CD is slow enough to follow. It's a great book and CD for junior high, high school and adults teaching themselves.
Great for a long ride somewhere.......2007-02-03
The chapters are much shorter than I thought (so you have to stop the cd a lot to take the test), but it's still a pretty fun book. I love the narrator's voice-it's hilarious "don't pass this test and you shall never make it out alive" and things like that. Plus, it's great because of the CD so you can hear how the words are said so you can get your accent down. I've learned a lot of new cool vocabulary.
Customer Reviews:
Extravagantly beautiful, but pretentious text.......2006-01-09
The photographs of Christian Dior's magnificent creations are breathtaking. But the writing is unbearably pretentious. Unfortunately, this characteristic is a hallmark of most academic writing. But get the book anyway. Dior was an artist, a seeker of Beauty, and we're all the richer for it.
Treats Dior's work with the reverence it deserves..........2001-12-04
Focuses on the romance and idealism of the artist and his art rather than just functioning as a clinical review of his work... as of this review date, new hardcover copies are still available from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Online Store. I've purchased two.
Magnificent! A must have!.......2001-05-17
This book is gorgeous--fabulous photography, lots of detailed shots (I love the way they concentrate on the dresses and don't feel obliged to get the manniquin's head in every shot)--glorious! Get this book now!
An Exquisite Album of Christian Dior's Work.......1997-07-12
This is a portrait album of a sampling of Christian Dior's masterpieces shown in the 1996 New York Metropolitain Museum of Art's retrospective. Every garment is beautifully captured. The detail photographs are exceptional.
But this is more than just a picture book about the 11 years Dior designed under his own name. The text offers a balance of historical costume references that Dior used in his creations against the social and economic era he designed in. It is both interesting and informative--two words that usually don't co-exist in most fashion references.
As a coffee-table book, this is a must-have for fashion afficianados. For those who can visualize and appreciate the complexity of drape and construction in some of the garments, there is no excuse not to own this book
Book Description

Simply gorgeous.......2007-06-14
This huge, high-quality softbound volume is, in brief, a most fitting tribute to the great Christian Dior on the fiftieth anniversary of his death. The book is filled with superb full-page photography, mostly in black and white, of everything Dior, from his gowns to his accessories to his atelier in Paris and his fashion shows. As the book's title implies, the focus is on Dior's connections with Germany in his great years, 1947-1957. Several of the photographs feature the immortal Berliner Marlene Dietrich in Dior creations. Altogether a wonderful book!

2 dolls plus 32 classic costumes by Lanvin, Norell, Schiaparelli, other legends.

Fabulous Forties.......2005-04-11
The forties were fascinating years in the history of fashion, and Tom Tierney has captured them beautifully with this book. The abrupt change from wartime to the New Look is well depicted.
I especially loved the inclusion of the WAC and Navy Nurse Corps uniforms.
My reason for not rating this book a full 5 stars is that the 3 outfits by Dior have been inaccurately drawn (I'm a huge Dior fan, so I am familiar with photos of his designs). Also, Dior introduced the layered tulle ballgown in the spring 1947 collection, a design that had a huge impact on evening wear for the following decade, yet this type of gown is not included in this work.
Beautiful renderings of couture fashions.......1998-08-24
I love all of Tom Tierney's fashion paperdolls. The paperdoll models are great and the clothes are beautifully illustrated. This book covers examples of 40's day/evening wear. The movie star books-like Garbo and Crawford- feature costumes. I look for the costumes when I watch the old movies. There are some changes, but you know the outfits when they appear on screen! Each costume/fashion has the designer and year listed with it. I have most of his paperdoll books and made a costume from the Carmen Miranda book!!
Book Description
2 lifelike paper dolls and 30 haute couture outfits by Chanel, Paquin, Jacques Heim, Mainbocher, Pauline Trigere, Givenchy, Cardin, Norell, other greats. Full Color. Publisher's Note. Captions.

Designs of a Decade.......2005-04-11
This is one of my favorite Tom Tierney paper doll books. The dolls look as if they've stepped straight from a 1950-s magazine, and the outfits are beautifully drawn. The detail is especially lovely on the lace gowns and the colors throughout are superb.
The outfits chosen for the book are a great summary of the wardrobe of an elegant, wealthy woman of the fifties. The only items which should have been included but weren't are bathing suits and draped evening dresses.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2006-06-02
I expected this book to be filled with wonderful, vivid pictures and I was a bit let down. There are only 79 pages and they are no captions to explain the pictures at all! There is no organization, it seems like the author just threw in pictures with her eyes closed. They are mixed with the past Dior and the present Dior with John Galliano. For example, there is a picture of Galliano in the middle of the book and then, a few pages later, there is a B&W picture of a 1950's model in Dior. I know that the picture was from the 1950's because I've seen it before. There are no dates on any of the pictures.
If you really enjoy Dior then you should get this book but it's very small in shape and after you look at it once, you can put it away.
