Paco Sullivan arrives in town penniless and job-hunting, the rain evaporating off the street forming "pungent steam so thick you would think his legs were cut off at the knees." In truth, the enigmatic Paco is indeed crippled. He is the sole survivor of an infantry company "pulverized to ash" in the Vietnam War. The methodical monotony of a dishwashing job in a diner offers some salve, though everyday things bring back savage memories. Heinemann's second novel--the first, Close Quarters, was based on his combat experience in Vietnam--is narrated through the collective voices of Paco's dead colleagues and offers a war veteran's envious and despairing view of the regular world. Paco's Story won the 1987 National Book Award.
Book Description
Paco Sullivan is the only man in Alpha Company to survive a cataclysmic Viet Cong attack on Fire Base Harriette in Vietnam. Everyone else is annihilated. When a medic finally rescues Paco almost two days later, he is waiting to die, flies and maggots covering his burnt, shattered body. He winds up back in the US with his legs full of pins, daily rations of Librium and Valium, and no sense of what to do next. One evening, on the tail of a rainstorm, he limps off the bus and into the small town of Boone, determined to find a real job and a real bed–but no matter how hard he works, nothing muffles the anguish in his mind and body. Brilliantly and vividly written,
Paco’s Story–winner of a National Book Award–plunges you into the violence and casual cruelty of the Vietnam War, and the ghostly aftermath that often dealt the harshest blows.

I hope you like fiction.......2007-07-09
Don't bother if you're a fan of nonfiction! I was hoping for some realism and to learn more about Vietnam. Instead I got a goofy novel about some horny, injured guy looking for a job. Now that I think about it, half of the book was about sex, the characters thinking about sex, and a lovely rape story as well.
powerful, with a small hole in the center.......2007-04-04
Paco's story has some clever conceits: there is the narrator, who only reveals himself slowly and carefully, as a ghost from Paco's decimated company in Vietman, and appears to have some companion who he calls James; but we are never told who James is, and why it is necessary for the narrator to tell him Paco's tale. Paco himself is a type of ghost. For the protagonist of an entire novel, we get extremely little insight about Paco qua Paco. Even his odd name, Paco Sullivan, hints at some wider, more humorous story, which is never exploited in this novel. Paco acts more like a ghoul than the narrator, who in compelling ways, is more fleshed out than Paco. We know Paco is wounded physically and psychologically, but we never get his own voice. It is reflected through others, but it lacks immediacy. Yet even with this vital flaw, Paco's story is a moving elegy to war, its victims, both dead and alive, and the confounded human ability to forget the horrible price of waging war itself. And as a Vietnam novel, Paco's Story catches the cadences and vocabulary of the war with great nuance. Again, a novel like this illustrates the great power in writing vernacular slang with dexterity and skill.
Snapshot of Life During/After Nam.......2006-01-17
Paco's Story is about young Paco Sullivan. Sole survivor of his unit's ambush, he has returned to the States to look for work. Left with painful injuries that require powerful painkillers every day, Paco encounters both curiousity and discrimination from the locals in the small town he ends up in.
Paco's story is written with graphic, lyrical language that brings his horrific war memories, and his trying to fit in as a veteran of a war that nobody really understood, to life. Heinemann writes in an unusual, dream-like way that just draws the reader in, until they feel like they are feeling what Paco feels. He writes of Paco's seemingly mundane experiences and transforms them into something cathartic. A must read for anyone interested in Nam.
A Story Worth Reading.......2005-06-09
This book gives a glimpse into the toll that war takes on those who survive. No one but those who endure it can truly fathom the horrors of PTSD, but for the rest of us who want to understand, this book is the best I've read yet. Paco wanders through his life finding some solace in washing dishes in a small diner in Texas, losing himself in his work and barely surviving mentally from day to day. The style of writing drew me into Paco's suffering. Although it is fiction, it is written by a Vietnam vet and left me wondering how many Pacos there are among us. His story is one that may well haunt you long after the final page is read.
Unspeakable Horror/post traumatic stress.......2004-10-13
This book worked for me. I was drawn into a life, a sad unremarkable life on the outside but a life filled with courage and dignity inside. Paco has a story so horrific, so painful that he can't share it with anyone but the dead who haunt him. He can't escape his experiences or his pain. He can't comprehend why he is still alive. He can't relate to those living ordinary lives. He cannot share his terrible story. He is going through the motions of living on the "outside" but really living to deal with his inner demons.
Paco's story powerfully shows the alienation of soldiers from society when they come home. It shows the gulf-too wide to be bridged between the GI and the ordinary person. It shows the indifference and lack of interest the average person has in what was sacrified or what a soldier has gone through. It is also a story about the brutalization of men-forced to kill and commit unspeakable acts of violence. Paco's story is told in a simple way, yet is packed with universal truths. It is hard to look at these truths even in a book. I wept for Paco and my brother and the other maginalized veterans. I'm re reading the book and its even more powerful the second time around or I'm just understanding more.

Try To Keep Up!.......2005-07-07
Four Hands is a wonderfully inventive novel: a political thriller of spies, hit men, terrorists, drug dealers, and assorted malefactors, all involved in the shadowy fringes of the history of two nations. Its tellers are Greg Simon and Julio Fernandez, investigative journalists who are chasing down an elaborate conspiracy plot. The story they discover and type out together weaves truth with lies, wild humor with tragedy, and reality with fantasy-a stranger-than-fiction tale of imperial excess where delusion makes perfect sense.
About the Book- From the publisher and editorial reviews.......2004-11-11
Four Hands
ANNOTATION
Stan Laurel, one of the heroes of Four Hands, wanders into Mexico and witnesses the assassination of Pancho Villa. There follow other episodes, centered on Greg, an American journalist, and Julio, his Mexican friend and collaborator. Taibo gives the reader a plethora of brilliant characters in this panoramic novel that moves backward and forward in time.
FROM THE PUBLISHER
St. Martin's Press is proud to publish the first English translation of a major literary novel by Paco Ignacio Taibo II, whose previous appearances in this country have been this leading Mexican author's crime novels. The "four hands" are those of two world-ranging journalists, one Mexican and one American. It is these two men who provide the initially improbable links between such disparate elements of Taibo's amazing novel as Stan Laurel's witnessing the assassination of Pancho Villa; the Disinformation Operation of an anonymous group in New York who approach their dingy office up a fire escape; the discovery of Leon Trotsky's notes for the crime novel he was writing when he was murdered in Mexico; the stupefying thesis proposals of graduate student Elena Jordan; an episode in the Contra war in Nicaragua; and the Spanish miner's takeover of a coal mine in the thirties. These themes and others, like the voices of a Bach fugue, appear and disappear and reappear, gradually weaving together into an intricate whole without losing their separate identities. Four Hands is a funny, dazzling, and exuberant work that only this author could have created.
FROM THE CRITICS
Publisher's Weekly
Two journalists-one Mexican, the other American-each tell the story of a plot to vilify the Nicaraguan Sandinistas in this complex tale that weaves together real and fictional characters including Pancho Villa, Stan Laurel and Harry Houdini. (July)
Library Journal
At times reminiscent of Doctorow's work, Four Hands is a glorious documentary-style novel, offbeat and usually comic. Taibo (Some Clouds, LJ 6/1/92) focuses on two 1980s journalists. Both partners and friends, Mexican Julio Fernndez and North American Greg Simon write about politics and revolution for the likes of Mother Jones and Rolling Stone. Interwoven with their stories are strands of fiction and fictionalized nonfiction that span the decades of the 20th century, roaming from the Americas to Europe and back. Other characters include Stan Laurel, Leon Trotsky, and civil engineer and anti-Sandinista Ben Linder. Taibo, who lives in Mexico City, is already well known to Spanish-language readers. This novel belongs in all strong contemporary literature collections.-Mary Margaret Benson, Linfield Coll. Lib., McMinnville, Ore.
BookList - Donna Seaman
Taibo is usually considered a crime writer due to such anarchistic detective novels as No Happy Ending , but even though espionage plays a role here, this hilariously disorienting tale is too slippery for a genre designation. The title refers to lucrative if frequently ludicrous partnerships, such as that of Laurel and Hardy (Stan Laurel plays a key role in this complicated narrative), and the collaboration of the novel's main characters, journalists Greg and Julio. Greg, Jewish and chronically alienated, is the photographer, while Julio, loquacious and sanguine, does most of the writing, although, four-handedly, they manage to crank out articles in both Spanish and English, doubling their earning potential. As they track down their latest story amid the chaos and fervor of Latin American politics, war, gun trading, and drug dealing, they inadvertently parallel Operation Snow White, the goofy, most likely pointless brainchild of a CIA operative named Alex. Taibo's cleverly fractured yet unmistakably pointed plot involves dwarfs both literal and figurative, Houdini, a long-lost manuscript of a mystery written by Trotsky, and wonderfully caustic musings on the cult of information. Taibo ranges all over the map, and we follow, curious and entertained.
Worth the Effort.......2002-03-28
Have you read a lot of mystery novels? Can you guess "whodunnit" before the final chapter? If so, try your wits against this book. Written from several different perspectives, bridging not only gaps in point of view but time and geography as well, this novel will make you want to bang your head into the wall. Taibo's work, however, is well worth the all the confusion, because once you have a vague idea of what is going on, the work's machinations are fascinating. While Four Hands can be read as an exercise in disinformation, in the creation of history, it can also be read as the construction of a mystery. In other words, reading this novel is like seeing the cogs turning in Agatha Christie's head. Taibo supplies all of the necessary ingredients for a good mystery novel: the killer, the victim, the mastermind, and of course, the detectives (Greg and Julian, two journalists). The construction of the mystery then proves more important than the mystery itself; the reader waits and waits for all of these ingredients to come together. The character of Alex, the crazy agent in charge of the intelligence agency "SD" ("It is not especially clear who maintains the SD either. One time someone suggested their paychecks came directly from the National Security Council"(11)) is Taibo's mad artist figure, pulling all of the mystery's factors together. Alex, however, tries to plan the outcome of this mystery, and so there is potentially no mystery at all, but just the manipulations of an intelligence agency. Can all mystery novels be seen as the result of such careful and meticulous calculation? Is there any such thing as the unknown anymore? Luckily, there are enough twists and turns in this complicated narrative to keep every reader happy. In fact, if you can keep up with what exactly is going on, then you deserve a gold medal. My advice is to just enjoy this "mystery-in-reverse" and to appreciate the kind of thought and energy that goes into creating traditional mystery novels.
Whoa! What a ride..........1998-05-27
Yummy. This book is a real treat for any person who can string together alot of facts, loves details from the four corners of the earth that all play into a plot, and intellectualism in their mystery. I have to admit there were some chapters about a play in some prision that I did not get at all. But what I did get was a huge grin on my face for three days while I slogged through this fun fun book. So many subplots. The CIA (sort of, with a great oberkonig character), revolutionary-chasing reporters (they love Che and pal around in El Salvador when they're not drunk), stressed out drug dealers, Leon Trotsky, and some old International Marxist Organization surviving through a bunch of octagenarians. Oh-- I forgot my favorite-- a PhD student in search of a thesis topic. All these characters come together in an odd tale. And the best thing--- the book has NO POINT. At least none that I could pick up. Don't read this if you need to have your Ts crossed by the time you're done. Personally, it was sheer joy to read this. The author and translator are clever and witty to an art form and I hope someday I have friends who can amuse me so.

Book Description
This work demilitarizes the concept of war and asks what would happen if war was understood as discursive via late twentieth-century novels of war. In particular, this book seeks to revise common perceptions of war, postmoderism, and the novel by asking how they form, deform, and reform one another.

Book Description
Taking advantage of the freedom of fiction, this novel reconstructs the life of Dolores del Río during the silent film era in Hollywood. Not only do Dolores and her true love, Irving Taibo, appear within the story, but Hollywood stars Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo, and Rudoph Valentino—whose lives more closely resemble fantasy than reality—also have entertaining cameos.

Light Hearted Read.......2006-01-28
I saw this book at Barnes and Noble, checked the price of 5 dollars and bought it. I did not know what I was getting myself into. Being a small book, I figured this would be an easy read and that I would finish it fairly soon. It was FANTASTIC! Wow, Cadence and Ben's characters are exactly like every long lost couple. Ever regret leaving your high school sweetheart? This is the book for you, but I was surprised at how the pace was set. The book didn't set into major stages of climax until thirty pages away form the end. It was a little fast paced for romance, but still absolutely fabulous. Can't wait to read another!

Book Description
GREATER TIBET: Where Earth Touches the Heavens travels beyond the Tibetan Autonomous Region to reveal the less seen faces and places of Qinghai, northern Yunnan, Gansu and western Sichuan. Photographer Jimmy Lam braves hardy terrain and weather to capture the atmosphere of a land that is newly opened to the rest of the world. Lam's untiring fascination with Greater Tibet has taken him many times to various parts of the Tibet region. He has developed a keen sensitivity towards the seasons of Tibetan nature and culture.
In this beautiful album, Lam shares his personal perspective on the landscapes of Greater Tibet, its peoples and their beliefs and way of life. Award-winning photographer Ed Kashi calls this collection "sensitive, textured and photogenic" and an "accomplishment [that] lends a vital and new view into a land that few people get to see and even fewer try to photograph".
Customer Reviews:
You need to have this great book in your collection beause.........2004-10-25
Jimmy Lam goes beyond the stereotypical coffee-table book and makes photographs that examine the identity and place of the people of Tibet. I had the good fortune to meet him this summer and hear him speak about the work, and quickly discovered that he is a gifted photographer who is passionate about his photography, which is readily apparent in the photographs from this book. He's also in possession of excellent photographic craft, which is not an issue to the average viewer (as it should be) but appeals to photographers with a keen eye for detail. There are lots of very subtle nuances to his work that encourages viewers to slow down the pace a bit and take the time to understand the Tibetan people better, which is always an honorable goal with a book about people from a different place.

Wonderfully done and you can't put it down. Gives one the nice warm fuzzies. It's a small book, but a treasure.
A Book to Keep on Your Coffee Table to Open Again and Again.......2002-03-29
I received this book as a gift from my friend who knows how much I like Sandra Kuck. This book is so sweet, it takes you back to the simpler things in life and puts us back in touch with our feelings. Every print in this book is wonderfully detailed and so realistic. The pictures make you want to reach in and pinch that chubby little baby cheek. I keep it on my coffee table and everyone who visits can't help but pick it up. Everyone says the same thing, the details of the children are incredible. I have also received Treasured Friends along with Angel Kisses as a gift and this book is such a great companion to Angel Kisses.
The Beauty of Sandra Kuck.......2000-04-19
I think this is truly wonderful, but I love everything Sandra Kuck does, she has so much beauty to share with the world and I have met her several times and she is as beautiful in person as the beauty she creates. I think I found her work at the time in my life I needed to stop and smell the roses and I continue to enjoy everything she is connected to.

Heaven's Gift.......2005-08-10
Where angels go, love is sure to follow.
The last thing J.T. Rafferty expected when he awoke from a concussion was to find a beautiful stranger tending to his wounds. She'd saved his life, but the lovely Caitlan Daniels had some serious explaining to do, like how she had ended up on his isolated ranch lands, miles from civilization.
Despite his wariness, J.T. found himself increasingly drawn to Caitlan, whose gentle touch promised sweet satisfaction. She was passionate and independent and utterly enchanting. But Caitlan also had a secret, and when J.T. finally discovered the shocking truth, he'd have to defy heaven and earth to keep her close to his heart.
Excellent, passionate book.......2004-08-25
I enjoyed Heaven's Gift thoroughly. I wasn't a big fan of the scenes that took place in heaven. I thought those were badly written and trite. However, the earthly scenes were fantastic and the barn scene... well, let's just say this woman can really write passion!
Reviews and comments.......1999-04-27
"Heaven's Gift is a strong, gripping, fantastic story. I sincerely thank Janelle Denison for a story that believes in eternal love and guardian angels. The heavenly gift ending is truly the most moving I've read in many, many years. Superb!" KG, Rendezvous
"Promising new author brings a touching warmth of spirit to this heartwarming tale of a love so intense it cannot be severed even by death. Inspiring reading." Romantic Times Magazine
A real heart wrencher.......1998-05-24
What a talent I've found in Janelle Denison. She has, what I call, that special touch that I've found few authors have. Magic!
Heaven's Gift will have you tearing up and you'll be crying for the lost young love but rediscoverd adult love between J.T. and Caitlin.
You only get a taste, at the beginning, of the love they share as childhood sweethearts but you'll come to find as the story continues just how great a love they shared and you'll be treated to seeing them fall in love all over again, but at a much more deeper level. You'll feel their pain right along with them and cheer when they beat all the odds to be together again.
This is another keeper and a story not to be missed!
