Book Description
After a successful delivery, a baby falls mysteriously ill. But midwife Sarah Brandt soon discovers the source of the baby's sickness-and a scandal that's paved with greed and deception.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Cozy Set in Turn-of-the-Century New York City.......2007-08-20
NYPD Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy and midwife Sarah Brandt join forces again to solve the murder of a famed "magnetic healer", Edmund Blackwell. As the story opens, "Dr." Blackwell's body is discovered in his study by his pregnant wife Letitia. The shock of finding her husband's dead body causes Mrs. Blackwell to go in to labor. Sergeant Malloy, who was already on the scene at the Blackwell home to investigate Mr. Blackwell's death, summons midwife Sarah Brandt to assist with the delivery. Sergeant Malloy quickly concludes that, although made to appear a suicide, Dr. Blackwell was actually murdered. As Frank Malloy and Sarah Brandt uncover more and more of the Blackwell family secrets, more and more murder suspects develop.
The murder mystery in this third "Gaslight Mystery" is very strongly plotted. The mystery is a real page-turner. And I find the main characters of Frank Malloy and Sarah Brandt to be very real and likable. Author Thompson continues to hint at a romance developing between the two. Readers will have to wait for subsequent stories in this series to see if that romance forms. Finally, the author does a great job of setting the scene of turn-of-the-century New York City.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Murder on Gramercy Park" and the other stories which I've read in this series, and I eagerly anticipate reading the ones I have yet to read.
A Little Gem I Stumbled On.......2006-12-15
One day I was looking for something new to read and stumbled on Victoria Thompson's series with Frank Malloy and Sarah Brandt. I was so surprised as I started to ready Astor Place, then St. Mark's Place and now Grammercy Park - they are great! I can't put them down once I start.
They are worth the read!
Murder in upper-crust turn-of-the century New York!.......2006-12-04
This third book in Thompson's Gaslight Series takes place mostly in a neighbourhood that is much more well-to-do than where Sarah Brandt or Malloy are used to, but Sarah's birthright aids her in dealing with the protagonists in this book, since she comes from very high society indeed. The book begins with the birth of a baby, and nothing is unusual about that since Sarah is a midwife, but the birth has come shortly after a man has been found shot dead in this house. Is it suicide, as it is made to look? Both Malloy and Sarah know that this is not a suicide, and they set out to find the killer. On the way they uncover so many family secrets, that they almost have more suspects than killers. These books are pretty well-written and immensely entertaining.
3rd entry in Gaslight Mystery series another success.......2006-07-12
Murder on Gramercy Park by Victoria Thompson is the third book in the Gaslight Mystery series starring midwife Sarah Brandt and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy. In this entry, Edmund Blackwell a magnetic healer is murdered in his own home, and it seems like everyone had a reason to kill him, including his pregnant wife, his unknown son, his business partner and many more. Thompson does a good job spreading the blame around so that everyone looks guilty. The growing relationship between Sarah and Frank is gaining strength as they both acknowledge their feelings for each other. The dialogue isn't as snappy as in other mysteries, but it's still very enjoyable to read.
Engaging and well written.......2005-09-22
This is the third in the series and just as good as the first two novels. It is well written and presents engaging (and sometimes quite amusing) characters. The series seems to flow quite well with plausible story lines and various side themes constantly developing to keep the reader interested in the main characters and the next novel. This series reminds me a lot of Anne Perry's victorian mysteries with Charlotte Pitt.

Opera enthusiast and self-described worshipper of all things Victorian, first-time novelist Paula Cohen merges her two obsessions in Gramercy Park, a ripping good yarn set in Manhattan in 1894 that contains as many corsets as it does arias. When an elderly businessman and philanthropist dies, he leaves behind a Gramercy Park mansion and a beautiful but sickly ward named Clara. Enter the swarthy Italian tenor Mario Alfieri, who has recently arrived for his debut on the American opera scene, and whose velvet voice belies his womanizing swagger. Mario falls in love with Clara, whom he marries hastily as protection against Thaddeus Chadwick, the nefarious lawyer who covets his dead client's millions and his appealing ward--but not necessarily in that order. With plenty of standing ovations and fainting spells, vengeful threats and sexual deviancies, this is the sort of fiction that weaves a passionate tapestry of a tale and, in doing so, a reverent approximation of an era. Cohen concocts the repressed and proper past with plenty of titillation for a modern audience. In doing so, it's hard for the reader to decide which time period the book really belongs to, only you have to keep reading to see if the tenor sings a final, happy song. --Emily Russin
Book Description
New York City, May 1894. Mario Alfieri, a world-famous tenor, seeks only a house and few months of relative quiet before his Metropolitan Opera debut. Clara Adler, the dispossessed ward of a recently deceased millionaire, has secrets she has yet to dis-cover. Their chance meeting in a Gramercy Park mansion kindles a love as swift as it is unexpected, entangles them in an intrigue stretching back two decades, and earns them an implacable enemy.
Customer Reviews:
Romance or Tragedy?.......2007-06-25
I kept fearing that this book would suddenly morph from a dark sort of romance into a tragedy of Othello-ic proportions. It very easily could have, all the archetypes are there, even down to a vengeful Iago lurking in the background, waiting to set events in motion. The author does an excellent job of building suspense. But, thank goodness, the book didn't turn into a tragedy at all! Instead, this page turner becomes more a story of a woman struggling to overcome her past and less a tale of revenge.
A deeply satisfying read for New Yorkers-at-heart who revel in a smart Victorian twist.......2007-05-11
Paula Cohen's first novel is fluid and luxurious. I recommend you pair it with an equally good wine or brandy of similar character, and settle-in for a wholly pleasurable evening!
This is a thinking person's Victorian romance, with well-crafted reference to the predominant themes of the day: Astor wealth, the attraction to all things European and Argentine, the passion for collecting bric-a-brac and society gossip, and an elegant touch of Gothic gore draped along side for good measure.
Lovingly-detailed descriptions of New York in a bygone era - a dirty, entangled, and consummately beautiful city at the birth a new century - parallel the near trampling and eventual flourish of Cohen's heroine. Wagner, Puccini and Strauss play in the background as befits all the brimming ecstasy and suspense.
I most appreciate that Paula's literary voice mimics (with incredible artistry) what I imagine to be the unique conventions and conversational rhythms of the period. I look forward, with great anticipation, to hearing that lovely voice again in her forthcoming second book, and with another good bottle of wine in reserve!
Fun, but no Woman in White.......2007-03-10
Gramercy Park is a successful, but neither outstanding nor original, execution of a nearly 150 year-old genre that started with The Woman in White. Readers fond of that genre (as I am) will enjoy it.
Like the Woman in White, there is a beautiful but fragile pontential heiress, who is vulnerable to two different scheming villians whose machinations are intricate and gradually revealed. Like the Woman in White, she is protected by a "Dudley Doright" artist-hero who has a pure love for her angelic perfection. Unfortunately, this story has no Marion Halcomb, and no Villian with the depth and complexity of Count Fosco.
The characters are well-enough drawn and the plot spun out with sufficient adroitness to keep you rooting and turning the pages, but shallow and formulaic enough that it will not stay with you. In short, a pleasant snack. If you are choosing between this book and the Thirteenth Tale, choose the latter.
While readers of Victorian romance will be satisfied, those whose primary interest is historical fiction may not be. Details of 1890's New York are conjured adequately, but with an anachronistic feeling. There are references to carriages, to Washington Square being "uptown" and to New York Society of the day, but one is viewing these things as curiosities through museum glass from the 21st century. It lacks the immersion, you-are-there historical detail of such books as Time and Again or The Alienest.
An upper crust mystery.......2005-08-18
Gramercy Park features an upper crust mystery that keeps you guessing until the end. I read this book in competition with the recent Twins vs White Sox series. The book won. I just couldn't close the pages on Paula Cohen's effort to convey the New York Victorian era. She has written smart descriptions of New York, 19th Century Opera, and a Victorian archetype heroine who manages to swoon chapter by chapter. The story features two lawyers whose characters Ms Cohen knows by heart. Her Victorian romantic interest is compelling. The hero is an Italian tenor who wants to emulate Jesus and love them all but is won over by an unlikely charmer. This book you can't set down.
Historial Romance that's not the usual Bodice Ripper.......2003-02-28
Of COURSE there's a damsel in distress (Clara Adler) and a handsome Operetic Tenor hero (Mario Afieri) to rescue her. But this novel rises above the genre in its exploration of the consequences of sexual exploitation. The character of the heroine is firmly grounded in the Victorian era, not a projection of today's female as a character projected into the past. The Hero, while adhering to the genre's tendency to create men too good to be true, has some flaws that make him reassuringly closer to real life. The villan's character is a well thought consequence of pathological need for control and power. The supporting cast consists of characters that are well developed but who also remain within the mores and character of the time. An enviable first novel. Buy this book. It deserves a wide audience!

Book Description
New York's Gramercy Park was the Bloomsbury of America. Here Samuel Ruggles, who created Gramercy Park, hosted a grand ball for the visiting celebrity Charles Dickens and his "fat little wife." Here Walt Whitman gratefully accepted from Richard Watson Gilder a rare invitation to a party at a time when few found the poet of Leaves of Grass socially acceptable. Edwin Booth, paralyzed by remorse over his brother's assassination of the president, here sat silently behind drawn curtains. And here O. Henry searched the faces of New York's first underground travelers for the tales he would write about the city he called "Bagdad on the Subway."
Gramercy Park brings to life a place and time of dazzling intellectual achievement. Walk with Henry James, Edith Wharton, Herman Melville, George Bellows, and scores of others in an intimate tour of the extraordinary place that helped shape the literary and artistic values of modern America.
Customer Reviews:
An Impressive History.......2000-03-28
I get a big kick out of learning fun facts about New York with which to impress my friends, and this book did not disappoint. In-depth looks at Gramercy residents such as Peter Cooper, Edwin Booth, and the visual artists of American modernity are very satisfying, and the tone of the book is nicely conversational. Illustrated with both photographs and drawings, it makes a great companion piece for a walk around Gramercy. Not as interesting as books about the "low-life" of New York's past, and (for a book written by a woman) a little in awe of the tremendous MEN who founded and lived around the park-- however, it's a very comprehensive and well-written history of one of New York's oldest neighborhoods.
Book Description
An electrifying game of cat and mouse between an imprisoned mastermind and a crime writer with a hidden past.
In this darkly suspenseful novel about buried secrets,
Lizbeth Greene, a celebrated crime novelist whose inspiration has run dry, seeks out Wilson Velez, a gang lord just removed from five years of solitary confinement. Convinced that writing a book about Velez could revive her ailing career, Lizbeth persuades Wilson’s attorney to allow her to visit the notorious convict in his high-security Philadelphia prison.
Nervous, stammering, and withdrawn, Wilson is far from the cold-blooded, charismatic killer that Lizbeth had expected. But as their visits continue, she gradually becomes drawn into Wilson’s sinister world, and the two engage in a complex and fascinating dance of attraction and rejection: Lizbeth needs Wilson to kick-start her career; Wilson needs Lizbeth to sway an upcoming appeals case and keep him from returning to solitary confinement. As they reveal secrets that are more and more incriminating, their increasingly intimate and dangerous exchanges build to an unforgettable climax.
Customer Reviews:
Not the worst book I've read..........2006-11-26
I must admit, this book is outside my preferred genre. I am not a fan of Patterson-Baldacci-Grisham. I prefer historical fiction (Jeff Shaara) or fantasy (George R.R. Martin). This book left me very unsatisfied. The protagonist is flawed to the point of being unlikeable. The ending felt like a weak cop-out. I chose this book to read because I was travelling and needed a "thin" book that was easy to carry. Reading Harry Potter with my 8 year old was more rewarding than 'The Monsters of Gramercy Park'.
It's a WOW!.......2005-10-12
The idea of this book was fascinating and does bring back intensity of the 'Silence of the Lambs' interaction - and it is as effective in this wonderful read.
Wilson Velez is a prisoner who formed an ultra-violent gang who is in a high security prison and has a given a new court review to moderate his life at the prison - Lisbeth was a popular serial writer, whose subject has gotten worn, and failing sales - She decides to interview Wilson and maybe get herself writing again.
The 'dance' between writer Lisbeth and Wilson is mesmerizing - and soon you get so caught up you wonder who is really telling the true story - who is the manipulator - is Wilson a visionary or is he still the ultra-violent gang leader still operating in this high security prison?
The ending and its events that proceed it are thought provoking and will haunt you after you close the book.
Well worth the hardback price.
Read this before Hollywood bastardizes it.......2005-08-18
I'm not sure whether to describe Monsters of Gramercy Park as a thriller with the style of a literary novel, or a literary novel with the momentum of a thriller. All I can say is that you'll want to buy two copies: one to keep and one to gift. It's that good.
On the surface Monster's a thriller, but really it's the tale of the codependent relationship and power play that develops between a failing writer (Lizbeth) and Latino gang lord (Velez). Leigh's keen ear for dialogue and deft prose kept me guessing until the very end.
Monsters takes its name from an eponymous story-within-the-story, which could easily stand on its own as a Gothic children's book.
Leigh recently shared a Time Out London cover with Zadie Smith and Ian McEwan, among others. Well, if he keeps going at this rate, Zadie and Ian best watch their backs. Leigh's talents are undeniable. Read this before Hollywood gets its grubby hands on it, then you're stuck buying the version with the "NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE" cover.
A psychological thriller that keeps you guessing........2005-08-08
The Monsters of Gramercy Park by Danny Leigh draws the reader into a haunting tale of need and a struggle for power between two determined personalities. Wilson Velez, the convicted felon and leader of the Sacred Incan Royals, needs a reason to live after years of the harshest segregation known in the American prison system. Lizbeth Greene, the celebrated novelist known for the extreme violence that has haunted her life, is looking for her next book. The coming together of these two to create a true recounting of Wilson's life sets in motion a train of events leading to a truly horrific outcome.
While not your typical blood and gore thriller, this book is perfect for the reader who likes to be kept guessing. Throughout, manipulation and tension keep shifting the foundation upon which the novel is set. Many time I felt the rug pulled out from under my feet as what I believed to be true was ripped away.
Leigh does a great job in fleshing out his characters. Just when you think you know who they are, knowledge is turned on its head and you are left scrambling for a foothold. While Wilson and Lizbeth were not characters I liked, I was compelled to keep reading their story. Several times I found myself ranting out loud at Lizbeth, something I haven't been caused to do by a book in years.
This is a novel that will leaving the reader thinking and second-guessing for days to come. Highly recommended for readers who don't want their endings tied up in a box with a pretty bow.

Will Ashleigh give up horses?.......2003-05-13
Ashleigh Griffen is extremely upset when Shadow; a filly she took care of gets sold. Soon all the other yearlings go too. She then finds out that her friend is moving to California. She starts acting girly and totally ignores Stardust and plans never to get attached to another horse. When a neglected mare in foal arrives at Edgardale will she change her mind?
A kinda corny ending.......2001-06-18
Ok, It was easy to predict that Mona would come back, because Ashleigh in the 1st book of Thoroughbred mentioned it. But the last page was really really pathetic. I mean, if you got a promotion with more money would Mona's dad really give it up? And at the last minute too? And the house deal. Usually they don't "fall through" at the last minute. The rest of the book was good, except when Ashleigh got all girly. So , it's not that bad of a book.
A moodsetter for the holidays!.......2000-11-04
Chris Platt rolls out another great Ashliegh book! I love how you get so involved with Ashliegh and her feelings. Just a little suggestion though, wouldn't it be nice not to killthis series? Why don't you not make Ashliegh one age the whole time, end it when she says goodbye to Stardust and write a new series called SAMANTHA! Or CINDY! Or CHRISTINA. It couldn't hurt to do something different!

Book Description
In this witty and warm-hearted account, Ronald Harmon tells what it is like to experience life in the remote Bavarian village of Oberammergau. The iron-cold of winter snowstorms contrasts with the atmosphere of a warm-cozy kitchen and the delights of sumptuous regional cuisine. A generous spirit, shown by a loving, gentle Bavarian family on Christmas and New Year's, provides a charm and beauty that allow the true magic of an old-fashioned holiday to shine forth. Once Upon A Bavarian Winter transports us to a favorite haunt, where vivid characters offer a friendly hello as they pass by on their walks and where the tempo governs life by the season and not the days. Part memoir, part travel log, part cookbook, Once Upon A Bavarian Winter reads like a warm conversation with a lifelong friend, one you'll want to keep around on your bookshelves for many years to come.
