Book Description

News reaches the couple [Maharana Prince Jagat and his wife, Moti] that their only son, Jai, has been killed by the Chinese in a border skirmish, an inconsolable Moti sends Jagat out to bring the boy's spirit home. On the journey, the prince becomes involved with a beautiful and mysterious young American woman. Thus begins the fatal attraction between Eastern and Western ways, one bound by rigid custom, the other temptingly ripe with freethinking....Her simple yet evocative language, well-developed characters, and timeless plot make Mandala a fascinating addition to the fiction shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Intricate and compelling.......2007-04-02

I have loved Pearl S. Buck since I was a teenager - some time now. This novel has a straightforward simplicity that characterizes Buck's other works. Yet, the plot belies the human complexities that run deeply underneath. The reader will continue turning pages not for the fast pace, but to discover what choices each character will make as he or she faces the pull of "sympathy". Who knows why we are inexplicably drawn toward certain people or places? And Buck challenges us to stop worrying about social conventions and what we are "supposed" to do to follow our hearts' true calling.

I had to work my way through a good many pages to get my bearings in India, after reading her Chinese novels, but once I did, I was captivated! It awakened my interest in India and the strains along the Indo-Chinese border, all woven into a fascinating story. Another of Pearl Buck's books that I just could not put down!

5 out of 5 stars Timeless love story with hints of reincarnation.......2004-06-27

Having never been to India, I cannot judge this book on its cultural authenticity. The India that Buck portrays here is a country in transition (right after her independence), as are the characters within the book itself. Buck's gentle, touching explorations of arranged marriages versus "falling in love" could probably be applied to any traditional culture that is confronted with modernism. Can romantic love alone overcome differences of culture, caste, social and economic status?

Perhaps because the book was published in 1970, it deals with the sexual themes modestly and gracefully, without degenerating into gratuitous porn like so many of today's novels. It is enough to know that the characters sleep together, we do not need the details. More important is Jagat's discovery that "love" and "sexual intercourse" are not the same thing. In the case of the relationship between Moti and Father Paul, there is no physical sex at all -- just a deep, platonic love bordering on the mystical. And although Bert and Veera are deeply attracted to each other, neither could live "happily ever after" in the other's world. These are timeless themes, regardless of the setting.

There are hints of reincarnation in the book, too, suggesting that perhaps the lovers had known each other in another life and found each other again in this one. Reincarnation becomes more obvious toward the end of the book, after Jagat's son, Jai, is killed in battle. His mother is convinced that he still lives -- and perhaps he does, in the body of a 9-month-old child who reaches for a mummified tiger's paw that used to belong to Jai. Was he Jai returned? You decide.

2 out of 5 stars BAD PORTRAYAL.......2001-01-11

As an Indian, I strongly feel that Pearl Buck has not done a good job of portraying a real Indian character. Her descriptive writing is great, however the characters she has, such as Jagat, are not portrayed as a proper Indian. Pearl Buck might have tried to intertwine East and West together in this book, but in the attempt, she strechted the "trueness" of the character, resulting in the characters to sound fake. For a traveller who has never gone to India or travelled in it, it will reveal the beauty of this country. However, if this book is to be read to know about the Indian culture, this is clearly not the book to read.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!.......1999-07-31

Mandala gives a fascinating view into the class structure of Indian society. Buck paints a wonderful portrait of the traditions, geography and people of India. The plot centers around Jagat, an aristocratic married man who unwillingly begins to fall in love with a younger American woman. By the end of the novel, the reader is engrossed by both the spirituality of the characters and the country.

What a beautiful book; filled with glorious bags of the past, historical information and current values. There are hundreds of bags, created using techniqes such as beading, embroidery, tapestry, netting, crochet, knitting, tambour, loom, petit point and various stitchery. Gorgeous bags are displayed - eye-smacking delicious- that I have not seen in other collectible publications; a real plus for collectors. There is a chapter dedicated to restoration of vintage bags, with instructions for repair and cleaning, plus photos; tips when purchasing bags; and choosing the right purse frames. At the back of the book, page 256, I was delighted to see the two contemporary bags by Katerina Musetti, an artist and established opera singler; the bags are exquisite. It is obvious this book is a culmination of Paula and Lori's purse obsession, historical studies and labor. I highly recommend this inspiring book for collectors, as well as, bag enthusiasts; a book not to be missed. Review by Lydia F. Borin, The Beadwrangler

'Passion for Purses' is a beautiful, quality reference book for all purse lovers & collectors; from novice to the serious collector. The book has special emphasis on very early antique purses by one of the most knowledgeable persons around today. Contains previously unseen purses from private collections that have never before been published. Hundreds of pictures on quality paper, excellent information on the many catagories of purses that are included. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a passion for purses. Great book for study or pleasure.A Passion for Purses, 1600-2005

For those of us mere mortals who can love from afar and have a "Passion for Purses" and.. the collectors among us, WOW. This book is a consumate collection of the incredible history and workmanship of this much needed and desired personal item. The descriptions and photographs of each purse made me feel as though I was almost visiting them in person. The depth and breadth of the collections plus the amazing amount of detail & photos given on the handpicked items for this book made me feel as though I got a real education and my money's worth for sure. I still cannot figure out how these authors gained so much knowledge and still have lives other than their immersion in purses...do they, I ask? This book was written by people who LOVE what they do. I have read and reread this book too many times already. My husband actually was impressed. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable as I was an antique dealer for years, but I have seen things in this book that I never even knew existed. A "Passion for Purses" - my compliments. This is the first book I have ever bothered to review but - it is just that FABULOUS.

              Book Description

In this remarkable memoir, Lisa Price shares the extraordinary story of how she went from bankruptcy to successful entrepreneur—grossing more than two million a year while working from her very own Brooklyn home. Intoxicated by fragrance and scent even as a child, Lisa was famous among her friends for always smelling good. She never imagined that the oils she enjoyed mixing up for her own pleasure would give way to the hugely popular “Carol’s Daughter,” a luxurious, all-natural line of bath and beauty products.

How did a young black woman in financial straits, unable to get a business loan and deeply in debt, churn out a multi-million dollar enterprise? With $100 in cash, her own kitchen, and the simple notion that people should follow their hearts (which Lisa did by following her nose!) But first Lisa had to face down her demons—her fears about money, low self-esteem, and a history of failed relationships. But as she tackled each problem, her confidence soared and her business was unstoppable. She met her husband and business partner, began a family, and bought a large, beautiful space in her Brooklyn neighborhood to sell her products—favorites like Honey Pudding, Mango Body Butter, and Jamaican Punch that stars such as Halle Berry, Erykah Badu, Maya Angelou, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Rosie Perez buy religiously.

In Success Never Smelled So Sweet, Lisa Price charts her amazing journey in lively, down-to-earth stories about her childhood growing up in Brooklyn and the often unexpected “accidents” in the kitchen that led to her bestselling scents. From the early cultivation of her sensory gift through cooking with her Trinidadian grandmother to her painful years in a rigid school system where she was berated by teachers and bullied by kids, Lisa speaks tenderly and wisely about the subtle ways in which life can guide us to our inner truth—even as it throws out difficult obstacles along the way.

For any woman who has ever longed to leave the nine-to-five grind and work successfully from home, Lisa Price’s story is a must-read. Filled with inspiring anecdotes, life advice from her own mother, Carol, and the recipes for some of her best-loved products, Success Never Smelled So Sweet is a book to read by candlelight while soaking in a silky rose-milk bath.

I had recently saw Lisa along with Jada Pinkett-Smith and Mary J. Blige on the Tyra Banks show. I was inspired by what Lisa said so I picked up this book I got 2 Christmases ago.

I read this book in less than 2 days. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It inspired me to pursue my passions even more. Lisa was real and raw in this book about the trials and tribulations she faced before she began a multi-millionare. From bankruptcy to deaths to success, Success Never Smelled So Sweet was a beautiful read to me.

Lisa Price; bath and pampering products; Carol's daughter. All are metaphors for her life. Her mother, Carol, left Lisa the gift of smell and the passion for aroma. Now as the President and CEO of a multi-million dollar empire (Carol's Daughter), Lisa Price's skills as a businesswoman, entrepreneur and all-around success story embody the new Black history case study. Readers may identify with having life challenges while building a business for present and future success.

Lisa Price gives a very honest and candid account of her insecurities and obstacles faced as she grows into a woman who is discovering herself and dreams. Her own account of taking responsibility for bad choices in men, debt, and IRS Woes starts the world spinning in her direction. She then surrounds herself with positive take charge people who help he see the realization of her dreams. Her homemade body and bath products that are made "with love" for personal and family use becomes the road to her success.

Although the book started out a bit slow while leaving me to wonder where it was going, by the second chapter, it was difficult to put down. This is a must read for any woman who faces insecurities and self doubt - you are not alone, for any woman who is thinking of starting a business - all it takes is a dream and perseverance, for any woman who is stuck in the blame game and has yet to take responsibility for her own actions - try it and watch how things change, and for those women who love body products - try Lisa's honey&lime scrub from www. carolsdaughter. com - it is to die for! I'm sure Carol is quite proud of Lisa.

As one who truly believes in mind-body-spirit connection, I have always enjoyed aromotheraphy and natural skin and hair care products, as a result, when I discovered Carol's Daughter in an issue of Essence a few years ago--I was immediately smitten. At the time, of course I had no idea that Lisa Price was the beloved Lisa..Lisa...Lisa (says Oprah), I was just extremely drawn to the quality of her homemade products and the originality of her business concept. After reading Success Never Smelled So Sweet--I am so delighted that I followed my heart and supported such a positive and rewarding enterprise. Success Never Smelled So Sweet is the most inspiring and authentic book/memoir that I have read in a long time. In it you will follow the life of Lisa Price and her journey toward becoming the woman God created her to be. With persistence, personal reflection, and the ability to stay positive, overcome adversity, with the support of family and friends and much prayer, she took a hobby (creating homemade aromotheraphy products) and created a cult following. This book will remind you--and women everywhere to never give up and to follow your dreams, never money. Then money and success truly follows. How sweet success really is when you do what you love.
I loved this book--it has positively influenced my life as I continue on my journey toward fulfilling my dreams. Don't miss your chance to own a copy and buy a copy for a friend who has a dream brewing in her heart but lacks the courage or resources to act on them. Where there is a will, there is a way.

I stumbled upon Carol's Daughter products (and way of life) years ago, and never really thought much about it. Then years later I decided to order some products from the website (www.carolsdaughter.com), and i absolutely loved them. I loved the fact that I knew exactly what I was using on my body...things directly from nature, rather than numerous chemicals made in a lab. I could pronounce every ingredient! Not to mention the fact that my skin felt fabulous. I ran into an Afrian Heritage Store in Denver where they sold Carol's Daughter products and that's when I saw Lisa Price's book about her rags to riches success story. I thumbed through it, and later found it on amazon.com. I actually ordered about 10 different books around the same time, but this is the one that I grabbed to read first. And like many other reviewers, I couldn't put it down. Lisa writes so honestly about her life, she really makes you feel like you're connecting with her. Struggling with things such as financial hardship, weight problems, low self-esteem, and the "disease to please", any woman in American can relate. Once she looked inside of herself, and recognized the strength of God (the Universe, and other names she uses), she was able to slowly but surely overcome so much. I'm sad that I'm done reading the book, I want to read more of it!

Arrived in due time and the book is in good condition.

1 out of 5 stars Did Susan Sizemore really write this?.......2004-05-26

I LOVED Susan Sizemore's vampire novels and decided to give her romance books a try. Boy was I shocked. The writing seemed amateurish, the typeface huge and the prose so incredibly purple I wondered if this was the same author.

The story? Cleo is the devoted daughter of a famous archaeologist and a spinster. She's in love with a man named Angel. (Sigh). We don't find out much about the man for many chapters only that he's decided he wants to marry her. Cleo is your typical doormat heroine. First sacrificing for her father then for her sisters. The entire first chapter she spends 'needing' and 'wanting.' What does that mean? Also the frequent flashbacks in italics drove me nuts.

I cannot recommend this novel. The writing was very banal. I'm sorely disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars NOT VERY IMPRESSED WITH THIS BOOK.......2001-06-11

This is about the third book I've read this year where the story would have been much better had it taken place entirely in Egypt. Instead we only visit Egypt in tantalizing flashbacks. The adventures detailed in the flashbacks would surely have been more interesting than the story we're given. And one more gripe - on the front cover of the book Christina Dodd is quoted as saying, "A luscious, sexy, Scottish romp." - which proves to me that she didn't read the book. Yes, the present day action takes place in Scotland but in no way would I describe it as a "Scottish romp." Not a keeper. Buy it used if you just have to have it.

5 out of 5 stars It sizzles your socks (off!!).......2001-04-04

I have read a number of Sizemore's previous books and although they were well written they did not grab me from the start and compel me to rush to the finish only to regret that it had to end. This book does!!

A.David (Angel) is a bit of a bad boy. He and Cleo have a 10 year history of battling over antiquities across Egypt and Greece.

Their love story is believable because it is not an instantaneous attraction, it is based on knowing and growing. They are grown-up lovers who finally accept their fate is linked - but don't expect them never to fight again!

The story has a good pace that carries the reader into the story and keeps you there ("Just a few pages more and then I'll turn out the light!")

The entire secondary cast of characters are intriguing and could have had their own stories. Maybe Pia (Olympias) will appear later?? Congratulations Susan on a great tale!

              5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2001-02-23

Passion is right! Passion and laughter and wit and romance. I adored this book and can't wait for her next one.

              Book Description

"Does it have a name?" Vivian asked Walter.

What would be the proper question to ask her husband of nearly twenty years, when he brings home his illegitimate baby as casually as a bag of groceries? Although Walter's frequent infidelities became increasingly obvious to Vivian, she struggled to accept them. After all, she reasoned, they came with the Mercedes, the beautiful house, and the prestige of being Mrs. Carlson, the Texas state representative's better half. Having long since abandoned her attempts at motherhood, Vivian resigned herself to her law studies and a lonely existence as the perfect political wife in suburban Austin.

But Vivian draws the line at her husband's unexpected arrival. And once one line is drawn, she discovers that she can draw others. Left alone with this tiny, helpless bundle that disgusts and fascinates her, Vivian faces some of the hardest choices of her life. On the brink of a long-forgotten freedom, she begins the painful, empowering process of rebuilding her shattered life -- and the reawakening of her soul to the possibilities of love.

An emotionally charged, razor-sharp take on the myriad challenges facing women today, Evelyn Palfrey's witty and suspenseful novel establishes her as a refreshing new voice in contemporary women's fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Talk about the "price of passion"..........2006-08-01

I was skeptical about this book at first...but the storyline pulled me in. And I must say I'm happy I was pulled in.

Kudos to the author for coming up with not only this storyline, but the strong character/heroine behind the story. I don't know if there are many women out there who could've endured "the price of passion"....

Compelling storyline...you'll be engrossed from the first chapter to the last!!!

              5 out of 5 stars "I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!".......2006-05-11

Where do I start? Where do I begin? Well for one thing, don't be fooled by the title of this book(smile). Ms. Palfrey is an excellent writer, and excellent storyteller. I first read this book in the late 90's early 2000's, and I have to say that it's better the second time around. Ms. Palfrey's style of writing is so down to earth, it's like you can visualize what she has to say. "Walter" needed his"%&@" kicked for all that drama he put "Vivian" through, and she's a class act for just dealing with him. "Marc"....whatta man, whatta man!!! Chapter sixteen where they (Marc and Vivian) finally do the do was so spicy that I had to throw cold water on my face!!! All the other characters in the book are exceptional as well, and "Sondra" from "Three Perfect Men" was an added treat. This novel started my love for Evelyn Palfrey books.

5 out of 5 stars "The Price Of Passion".......2006-03-28

Walter is a very Passionate man. Walter also feels the need to spread the love to other's, woman outside his marriage especially. Being a Politician he is labeled as a person with a lot of power. Woman fall for men with money and power, plus Passion made him iresistable. His wife Vivian of ninteen year's married him for all the same reason's. But what is Vivian suppose to do when Walter birngs home a baby out side of the marriage? Should she stay or should she leave? If you were in this situation what would you do?

              5 out of 5 stars AWESOME READ.......2004-11-20

This book was good. I couldn't stop reading the book! Walter, man, if I was Vivian he wouldn't be alive! This was an awesome book. 5 stars!
