Book Description
It's Only the Enemy Screaming tells of one man's struggle with faith in the American experiment as the country's first made-for-media war unfolds. Perhaps I would be called upon to fight, I thought. I did not want to go. I did not want to sacrifice my life. I felt remorse for the boys who had already. What would be my family's reaction if I were to go and die? But these are not things to consider if you are in the desert with sand slipping away under your feet, cleaning your gun, smelling the oil, staring in the face of your enemy. The preparations of a warrior do not include doubt. They do not include consideration of the life left behind. The preparations of a warrior consist of absolute commitment, undaunted determination, and complete sobriety. All other considerations are made before the decision to go to war. If they are not, the warrior is doomed. It's Only the Enemies Screaming is the emotionally intense story of one man's descent into the psychological underbelly of American culture during the Persian Gulf War. Given our current political climate, M
cEnroe's edgy narrative of a spectator's view during the first Iraq conflict couldn't be timelierbut his ultimate focus transcends the political moment. It is a riveting, occasionally hallucinogenic, and always intelligent portrait of America's love affair with violence.

non-fiction based fiction.......2006-12-27
I love when authors write novels based on real events. It mixes reality with fantasy in a way that leaves you questioning if there's a difference between the two. McEnroe's first novel is a brave and successful attempt to convey one man's experience of the tragic events of the Persian Gulf war. Not a soldier's perspective, not even a draft dodger or a family member of a soldier. Just a guy going through his "normal" life and work experiences but with the Gulf War as the backdrop. The war actually became a character for me. The other minor characters were very real to me too, and I followed the main character's interactions with Jake (his friend), Georgia and Felix (his neighbors) Lawrence and the other kids at the homeless shelter with as much interest as I did the main story. Read it and see for yourself! Can't wait for his next novel.
Great First Novel.......2006-06-08
Right off the bat, the way that McEnroe creeps into the mind of his main character made me think of Dostoevsky and Gogol. I won't say that he is the next great Russian novelist (and not just because he's American), but to my mind, his style hearkens to those writers. The book's setting is Boston during the first Gulf War, but it's really about the internal conflict of an adult searching for an ethos and a community in a society whose loudest messages and clearest lessons preach violence and individuality to the point of isolation. The narrator, awash in the contradictory influences of modern America, looks to make sense of his life and where he fits. Being isolated as many in the 20th/21st century are, he has the media as his most loyal companion and guide. This is obviously problematic in that the media just reflects the incohesive and fractious society that has left him asea in his quest for meaning, structure, and purpose. He's on a fool's mission: the blind (media) leading the blind (narrator) through the world of the blind (the other lost souls in the narrators life). A journalist I know, a nightlife reviewer for a major metropolitan newspaper, was so struck by the concept of the book that he blanched visibly.
Although there were parts that didn't thrill me, the bulk of the book was great, especially for a first novel. Hop on the bandwagon now, and in a couple years, you'll be able to lord over your friends that you were the first among them to discover Christopher McEnroe.
A Good Read, I Recommend It.......2006-05-26
"It's Only the Enemy Screaming" is a wonderfully written book, and I could barely put it down. The main character is very easy to relate to, and that adds to the novels credibility. Macenroe uses a good mix of long, philisophical passages, political messages, and very real narration to portray this story of a Boston resident. Though the book fails to progress quick enough sometimes, the great writing makes up for it. An overall good read
Reminded me of a lot about the Persian Gulf War.......2006-04-16
The voice was a little crazy at first but once I got in sync with it I thought the perspective was interesting. The novel reminded me a lot about the Persian Gulf War that I had forgotten; like how things kind of stopped for a few weeks. It made me think a lot about the difference between the way I thought about that war and Iraq now. Also, the novel makes the big news event very personal. There are some funny scenes, a little warped, but there is a lot going on and I definitely recommend it.
The first Persian Gulf War and America's collective consciousness.......2006-03-01
This is an incisive dramatization of the pernicious impact of the Persian Gulf War on early 90's American culture. The story's texture is benefited from the fact that the book was written during that actual time period. As a result, rich details are infused throughout the narrative offering the reader a vivid sense of time and place.
Conveyed through the eyes of a discontent 20-something Bostonian, the story renders the war itself as a formidable character. Mr. McEnroe deftly develops a steadily intensifying dynamic between the jaded narrator and the war. The narrator's psychic affliction deepens with the progression of the war (or perhaps more importantly, the media's interpretation of the progression of the war). As in most matters of war, a happy ending for the story remains appropriately elusive.
As I read through this novel, I found myself frequently considering the current war in Iraq. The story's eerily prescient depiction of the first Persian Gulf War is a timely reminder that we would do well to learn from our recent history. It also gives this novel an immediacy that should not be passed over.

Great Entertainment with a splash of advice.......2007-08-31
Even if you are not at the point of matrimonial chat with your significant other, this book is a must read. It reminds you that if your not getting what you want out of a relationship i.e. marriage; then leave if he chases you down and gets down on one knee that you got em', if not, then just remember that you are an amazing person and that he was not the want meant for you...
No miracle cure.......2006-12-21
This book isn't the miracle cure for all women who are trying to go from Miss to Mrs.,(what book would be?) but it does have a generous amount of useful information when trying to understand the mind of the unmarried male and taken male. I really loved the "marriage marketing" section. There was a bit of truth in that and was the most memorable part of the book for me.
Fun, True, and Extremely Entertaining.......2006-11-02
This book is so well written; funny, witty, and on the mark. I believe that if a woman listens to these authors, she WILL close the deal if it's meant to be. I think Closing the Deal is wonderful for those women who hang on--even when they know in their hearts that he's not necesarily The One. It's also perfect for the woman who's had enough "wait" time and is ready to grow a set. Loved this book.
Amusing and helpful.......2006-04-02
I agree with reviewer Jeff that "Every single girl should read it. Even if she's not yet searching for Mr. Right." I myself am not hooked on the idea of marriage, though most women my age seem to be obsessed with finding the one and, not just finding him, but getting him to commit. Me, well, I read books like this in the hopes of gaining some understanding of men. (And so I also suggest "Self Made Man" by Norah Vincent and "What Men Don't Want Women to Know" by Smith and Doe.)
Aside from its helpful advice, the biggest plus about this book is how enjoyable it is to read. Funny multiple choice "quizzes" and amusing relationship anecdotes engage the reader, thus prodding us further.
My only beef is that women are urged to constantly be on the compromise and ego-soothing agenda. For this reason, I would love to read a book on the same subject, by the same authors, geared toward men. I want to know if they are able to be fair and balanced, or if they feel that it is simply a woman's job to constantly avoid and smooth out snags.
A very humerous book on how to land a man.......2005-08-15
Although this book had a lot of good information and advice parts of the book were a little difficult to read and follow. It uses a lot of words and terms that I have never heard of. Fortunately they give you a glossery in the back of the book to explain what they are talking about which takes up more of your time to get through the book. However it is very funny and worth reading. A better book that I read on the same subject was called "why men marry some women and not others". That book was very easy to read and got right to the point.
Book Description
Robert Rothmore, Earl of Rockford, thinks Alissa Henning is simply delightful-exactly the kind of woman who'd make the perfect mother for his sons. But Alissa swore she'd spend the rest of her life scraping pennies together rather than wed the insufferable earl and become a glorified governess. Still, she couldn't very well let her own children starve-and there was no doubt that Rockford would give them all a good life. So she reluctantly accepts his offer...but there's more to a good life than what's in one's pockets. And Alissa intends to find out what's in her new husband's heart.

Would Make a Great Movie.......2007-08-17
This book was lively, fun, and intelligently written - it was not however, emotionally satisfying. The story lacked a certain depth of emotionality between Rockford and Alissa. The writer was certainly capable of writing with more feeling, as the characters subjectivity spoke in more depth, but whatever her reasons, she didn't. That aside, I couldn't help but think what a great movie this could be if done by an English director, with an English cast, something in the vein of Sense and Sensibility - class with both drama and humor.
Outstanding..........2005-01-13
There's no other word for it, but OUTSTANDING. In a competition, this book would be hard to beat; it would end up number 1.
Funny but love between characters not there..........2005-01-12
Yes, this book was hilarious; is there another author this funny? I can't imagine it. Anyway, I wished there would have been more romance. they don't have to be Madeline Hunter type love scenes (although they are great)but give us SOMETHING! Their love simply didn't click because they rarely even embraced.
Bravo!!!.......2005-01-12
Just a delightful book. This book qualifies as a "Real Page Turner." Not much to their romance, though.
Great...But Lacked Real Romance.......2005-01-10
This story was captivating from word one, no lie, and the characters were simply wonderful, very realistic. But for all its thoroughness, the novel lacked romance. So much detail was given to all aspects of the story line, except for the romantic scenes. They could have been at least a little detailed.
Book Description
In living out the daily business of life for 25 years, four couples seem to have forgotten the basics of for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in health, to love and to cherish 'til death do us part? Is it too late to find wedded bliss?
Customer Reviews:
not what I expected.......2007-06-21
I did not like the second story in this book, and so I threw the book away after reading it. The second story heroine seperates from her husband of 25 years over minor misunderstandings. She won't go back to him until he agrees to go to marriage counseling with her. There was no adultery, abuse, or abandonment. The story bothered me, because in real life, many who seperate end up divorced. This woman didn't have just cause for divorce and should have been willing to work through their problems while staying with her husband.
The first story was fine.
What if your "perfect marriage" isn't as perfect as you thought?.......2006-02-20
Romance. Conflict. Resolution through faith. I can't ask for more in inspirational fiction, and I found it all in Wedded Bliss? by authors Susan K. Downs, Kristy Dykes, Sally Laity and first-timer Carrie Turansky. Characters...forty-somethings to whom I can relate...encounter marriage and family problems as four couples face their twenty-fifth anniversaries and discover that perhaps their lives aren't as "perfect" as they thought. Four different stories, four different couples, four different "problems." But, each one finds their solution through soul searching and a strengthening of their faith. I love inspirational romance, and this novel is a great example. I highly recommend it. Congratulations, ladies, and please keep writing.
Cleaning the Rust from a Marriage.......2006-01-21
Each story tucked within Wedded Bliss? truly captured the marital angst caused from the wear and tear of life. Every couple approaching a quarter of a century, or longer, of marriage has experienced crises, temptations or uncertainties never imagined when they stood at the altar.
Large and small decisions can have lasting impacts on a marriage. Downs, Dykes, Laity and Turansky are not afraid to examine the rust that can accumulate in our marriages over the years-parts we weren't aware of, didn't think we needed or were afraid to look at.
Each story crafts hope for the reader. The authors present realistic solutions, not platitudes.
A must read for the newly and not-so-newly married.
A Must Read For Any Silver Anniversary Celebrants.......2005-12-29
Susan Downs, Kristy Dykes, Sally Laity and Carrie Turansky serve up four poignant tales of Wedded Bliss? As four couples' silver anniversaries approach, they wonder: when had their love changed? Where did they grow apart? More importantly, can they find that love again?
Facing situations that unfortunately happen in life, each couple manages by seeking God, to get back on the right footing. The well written stories are touching, occasionally humorous, but always thought provoking.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly and look forward to reading more by these talented authors.
After 25 years, is marriage on the rocks?.......2005-12-24
WEDDED BLISS? is a 4-n-1 anthology of the true-to-life stories of four couples on the verge of their twenty-fifth anniversary who have problems that at times seem too big to overcome. Just like real married couples, the couples in this anthology face difficulties and temptations and must choose what is best for themselves and their marriages.
As a reader who loves a good romance, I was skeptical about reading a book about long-time married folks, but I was pleasantly surprised. Each story held my interest and was engaging and heart-tugging. Having been married over thirty years, I could easily put myself in some of the situations covered in these novellas and could understand the depth of emotions and difficult choices facing these couples.
New author, Carrie Turansky, does an excellent job with her debut novella. Whether you're single, newly-wed, or have been married twenty-five years or more, you'll be encouraged and entertained by WEDDED BLISS? and learn that a good marriage is worth fighting for.

I cannot say enough about the beauty and vast amount of information in this book. It is very aesthetically pleasing and would make the finest coffee table book with its colorful pictures and glossy pages. However, the book is also a wonderful resource as well giving history, anecdotes, and how-to information about the weddings of this most romantic of eras. Any Victorian buff or bride-to-be or lovers of good taste and form would LOVE this book. It is definitely one to buy!

Very passionate for a Harlequin Romance.......2006-03-23
Okay, this is definitely not a typical Harlequin Romance. It's very passionate and romantic and has sex in it. I loved the opening where the two are trapped at a broken-down cabin during a storm. It's one of the sexiest scenes I've ever read. What happens that night leads to an unexpected pregnancy.
I just loved this book. I really loved the strength of the characters. These are poeple who have been through tough times and show it and yet have a vulnerability to them that makes me hurt for them. The issues that keep them apart are serious and it takes the entire book to work through, but that's how it should be. There was a touch of humor in the story which you can pretty much count on showing up in all of Leclaire's books.
This book was probably my favorite of the Cupid Committee trilogy, though I really liked the other two almost as much. I highly recommend this book.
The Cupid Committee strikes (out) again.......2004-12-20
Raine Featherstone is busy running a ranch, so she is not too happy to receive a note from her former love interest and current rival Lucien Kincaid, demanding she meet him at the old line shack where they had had their single past intimate encounter. When she arrives she meets Lucien, who has come because of a similar note he claims to have received from her. Could the Cupid Committee be up to its matchmaking shenanigans again?
Well, of course it could. But even the Cupid Committee probably couldn't have predicted the bad storm that rolls in, stranding our star couple, or the tree that falls on the line shack, destroying almost everything and trapping Raine and Lucien in a large hole (conveniently without most of their clothes, which were washed away by the storm).
From this dubious beginning (I mean really, folks, settling mysterious notes is what we have phones for) things head mostly downhill. Our stranded lovebirds get carried away (again!), Raine gets pregnant, and they spend the rest of the book hashing out the various difficulties which have kept them apart--mainly a dispute over some land, and the fact that Raine blames Lucien for killing her grandfather. These conflicts are revealed in fragmentary and confusing ways, and it's only in the last ten or so pages of the book that the reader actually learns all of Lucien's supposedly noble and self-sacrificing motives for keeping Raine in the dark on several important issues.
Noble and self-sacrificing or not, Lucien, like Raine, is pretty self-centered. This book lacks the intrigue of the first book of the trilogy, and it lacks the humor of the second. A few moments of humor are provided by the antics of Raine's dog and Lucien's horse, but they're not enough to rescue this book. For a deeper read that touches on many similar issues and features a cowboy hero who really is one, try Margot Early's "The Truth About Cowboys."

Madly Entertaining.......2005-11-01
Mad Love by Darrious D. Hilmon and his sister Javaki Hilmon, is a collection of four novellas. Each story deals with relationships and the lessons learned via adversities.
From the story of Danielle, a soon to be bride and Amadeus, the man that she is contemplating an affair with; to Chris, a man madly in love with his lover who is about to be married; each story is thought provoking and entertaining.
I strongly recommend this book for fans of short stories and novellas. If you like drama with lively characters and real situations, Mad Love is sure to tickle your reading fancy

To Thine Own Self, Be True..........2005-10-06
I highly recommend this book! As an avid reader all my life, and a member of a bookclub for the past four years, I've read lots of fiction on love, relationships, etc. Most of them are just light reading, where you don't learn (or even expect to learn) anything about yourself. This book is different. Yes, there were plenty of juicy parts to this book (sex (!), lust, love, etc). However, it also went one step further, and I got something out of it that I didn't expect - a lesson!!
On our paths to becoming closer to our authentic selves, there is always risk! Each of these characters tried to fight against their true feelings in order to fit in, be liked, avoid pain - basically, ignore who they really were, or what they believed in. Only when they made the decision to love freely did they become truly happy, because they made the CHOICE to honor their feelings. And the love stories are beautiful (read the prologue to "Promise Me", and just melt!)
Who knew I'd get all this from a fun, laugh-out-loud, "Oh no, she DIDN'T" book! GET IT!
Loving it!.......2005-09-23
I began reading this book in bed, and I read until I couldnt hold my eyes open anymore. I woke up at roughly 3am and started reading again and finished at approximately 4:30. I had to finish each of the short stories because I felt as if I had a vested interest in these peoples' lives. The characters in Mad Love appeal to the reader in the form of our friends, foes, loved ones, and the ones we want to love...including ourselves. The reader may even find a bit of themselves between the sheets and covers of Mad Love.
Though Javaki is a novice in the world of written art, she is far more talented than her literary resume' may give her credit for.
Darrious once again gave me a reason to stay up into the wee hours with his ever so stylish, street savvy characters and their captivating personalities. There is always just enough foreshadow to keep you guessing, enough sex to get your pheremone sensors going, and enough drama to make you feel normal.
