The Polly Parker Stories.......2005-12-27
I am really shocked that this first rate Fitzgerald collection does not have the "Polly Parker" stories that originally were printed serially in THE SATURDAY EVENING POST in 1922. Apparently these uncollected stories remain unavailable anywhere in book form.
Polly Parker was a typical Fitzgerald heroine -- a blue-eyed flapper with a pert nose and golden hair bobbed very short. The reason her stories are omitted, I gather, is that they were slightly more sexual in tone and also addressed taboo subjects such as alcoholism, racial violence, incest, and insanity.
"GRANDPA'S GOLD" the first Polly story, deals with lasting echoes of the Civil War. Spoiled Polly goes to Vermont for the summer to stay with her aging grandfather -- the last remaining Union army veteran in Vermont. Ultimately she robs him of a small fortune in gold coins which he had originally intended to donate to a Negro orphanage. This story highlights Fitzgerald's ambivalence towards the young women of the day -- Polly is cruel and selfish, but also winningly spontaneous, free and independent. Fitzgerald's racism is in full flower here as well. The fact that she is "only" robbing colored people seems to make her crime an amusing prank rather than a vicious crime.
"ALLIGATOR QUEEN" is both darker and more sophisticated. Polly is a houseguest in Georgia, where she meets Eleanor Hiss, a jazz age siren who may or may not have negro blood. The two girls deliberately lead a young Harvard man out into quicksand, then go joy riding in his car while he slowly drowns. Fitzgerald later wrote that Eleanor seduced Polly in an early draft -- but in 1922 the SATURDAY EVENING POST would never have carried a story with an explicit lesbian seduction.
"HOLY MATRIMONY" is the ironic finale to the Polly Parker stories. Invited on a weekend yachting party, Polly is compromised by an Eastern Prince and forced to marry silent movie star Reginald Dashwood. Dashwood is a homosexual who needs "discreet companionship." Polly marries him, assuming he is a pushover, but instead he is cruel, domineering and controlling -- and aided by an iron-willed mother who treats Polly like a servant. Polly's "punishment" is ironic, since she now has unlimited wealth and a dazzling husband -- but no freedom and no hope of either sexual or spiritual release.
Taken together, these three stories represent Fitzgerald's darkest early work -- and they should be included in any "definitive" collection.
Short Stories.......2002-09-12
I bought this book for the short stories. They are like small diamonds on a necklace, sparkling in a row, each one a wonder. Fitzgerald's short stories are like that.
"The Off Shore Pirate" is hilarious. The "Ice Palace" is strange and beautiful. "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is about a baby born very old who gets younger every year.
"The Diamond As Big As The Ritz" is classic Fitzgerald, about the rich.
The story that is missing is "The Rich Boy." This is the story that started the famous spat between Hemingway and Fitzgerald.
In this short story, Fitzgerald writes: "The rich are very different from you and me." Hemingway responds in his short story, "The Snows Of Kilimanjaro:" "Yes, they have more money."
But you will not find "The Rich Boy" in this book. Too bad.
Included with the short stories are two novels:: This Side Of Paradise and The Beautiful And Damned. They are very adolescent novels. High school students might enjoy them.
Maybe not.
The short stories do more to describe the Jazz Age than his novels.
If you are serious about this author, his greatest novel is The Great Gatsby. His next best novel is Tender Is The Night. "The Rich Boy" is his best short story.
Good Collection of Pre-Gatsby Work.......2000-11-13
This is a very attractive packaged, comprehensive collection of Fitzgerald's early work, containing his first two novels (This Side of Paradise and The Beautiful & Damned) and his first two short story collections. Included are some classic short stories such as May Day and The Diamond As Big As The Ritz. Some of the other stories are less than classic, but all are enjoyable. As is the case with all Library of America volumes, the book is very easy to handle and read. There is a useful set of notes and chronology of Fitzergald's life in the back. All in all, this is well worth the price.

Book Description
A riveting evocation of the Civil War, drawn from the true family history of "America's best novelist" (The Denver Post), JAMES LEE BURKE
1861. Two young Southerners, friends despite their differing political views and backgrounds, enlist in the 18th Louisiana regiment of the Confederate Army: Robert Perry, wealthy and privileged, and irreverent Willie Burke, the son of Irish immigrants, face the trials of battle and find redemption in the love of a passionate and committed abolitionist, Abigail Downing, and in the courageous struggle of Flower Jamison, a beautiful slave. Filled with a cast of unforgettable characters, and penetrating a landscape of shattering Civil War bloodshed as few novels have, this epic from an American literary giant endows readers with the gift of experiencing the past through new eyes, while its timeless prose style -- at once luminous and brutal -- ensures the legacy of this bloodiest of conflicts will never be lost.
Download Description
For years, critics have acclaimed the power of James Lee Burke's writing, the luminosity of his prose, the psychological complexity of his characters, the richness of his landscapes. Over the course of twenty novels and one collection of short stories, he has developed a loyal and dedicated following among both critics and general readers. His thrillers, featuring either Louisiana cop Dave Robicheaux or Billy Bob Holland, a hardened Texas-based lawyer, have consistently appeared on national bestseller lists, making Burke one of America's most celebrated authors of crime fiction. Now, in a startling and brilliantly successful departure, Burke has written a historical novel - an epic story of love, hate, and survival set against the tumultuous background of the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Excelent Read.......2007-06-15
James Lee Burke Brings the beauty of the South Louisiana town of New Iberia to the reader with extreme accuracy. I live in the area and have family ties to New Iberia. Now thanks to Mr Burke I can envision what the area around Spanish Lake and where Camp Pratt was located as it was during the Civil War period each time I visit. Mr Burke also give an accurate account of the attitude of the people of the area back during that time period. I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to all.
BURKES FAMILY HISTORY.......2007-05-10
James Lee Burke takes us back to the 1860's as he weaves the tale of two young Southerners, Robert Perry (Burke's great-grandfather) and Willie Burke (his great-great uncle) as they are drawn into the Civil War. Utilizing the journals of his great-great uncle Willie, we experience the shattering reality of a war fought on U.S. soil that pitted friend against friend and brother against brother.
Two characters in the novel, Ira Jamison and Clay Hatcher, certainly must be composites of several people because it is difficult to imagine that much evil contained in just two individuals. The adversity faced by the Southern men and women during this trying time is almost impossible to comprehend and the replacement of slavery with convict laborers from Angola Plantation traded one type of brutality for another.
Though the men fight the war, the true strength and courage seems to be possessed by the women of this piece, Abigal Dowling and Flower Jamison, who fought for their principles despite the potential for injury and abuse which peppered their daily lives.
I appreciated Burke's epilogue in which he answers the questions that usually puzzles the readers of this type of novel......"What ultimately happened to each of the characters"? Thank you James Lee for tying it all up in a nice little bundle for us.
I kept reading ..........2007-04-07
However, I do have a couple of "irritations" as I proceed through the book: #1 The Civil War was simply NOT all about slavery and #2 the term "people of color" continues to crop up--this is a modern, politically correct term (and though I have no objections to it in a modern context) but it has nothing to do with the terminolgy of the period. Every time I saw this term being used, I was jarred out of the time being described and into current terms and political correctness.
Maybe 2.5 stars..........2006-12-02
This is my first James Lee Burke novel, and I won't lie, it will probably be my last. Although there were some parts of this book that kept me interested, and as a history buff, I was happy with its historical accuracy, there were also many parts that dragged. I also feel that the author used massive amounts of description to make the book longer--there were way too many similes and metaphors packing the pages. To top it all off, I think the end was extremely anti-climactic. Was it a terrible book? No. But I wouldn't strongly recommend it to anyone, either.
A good read.......2005-09-19
Interesting story, characters delineated well. Recommend to those that are not historians but have an interest in Civil War fiction.

The Original "Strange" Tesla Book.......2004-01-24
This is really the book that got the whole "Tesla is a UFO whizz-kid" going and MANY of the other books out there owe it to non-other than Commander-X for the expose and getting their minds going. Truth be told that this book is 50% complete fiction, 25% semi-accurate and 25% accurate.
However it is still a must read! You will love it! It talks about Tesla as if he was an alien and then expands on that. As a work of fiction and some half-truths it goes down a treat. I recommend this book on the bases that you also read something more mainstream and vetted for accuracy or even books written by the man himself.
You will still love this book though. I know a lot of it is bunk but I still find myself sitting on the loo flicking through the pages now and again for a good laugh. The real fun is finding out what is true and what is not by doing your own research or reading other books.
This is great stuff.
A SLIGHTLY NEW AGE/OCCULT VIEW OF TESLA'S LIFE.......2001-11-20
Frankly, I don't know where the previous reviewer says most of this material is available in other books.JUST THE OPPOSITE!In WHITE DOVE, the author deal with a bit of what I am sure he would agree is speculative -- and highly controversial -- material. For this book takes a much more metaphysical approach to Tesla' life than anything else that might have previously been published. But for this reason in particular I enjoyed this book cause it goes far a field to show that Tesla was one of a kind -- perhaps a WALK IN (like T Lobsang Rampa) from some othr time period, dimension or perhaps even extraterrestrial in origin. Commander X calls upon various Tesla authorities to make this point. There is also a lot of space devoted to the works of other creative individuals such as Otis T. Carr, Howard Menger and Mathews who was a close friend of Tesla who resided in Canada and shared Tesla' fascination with other worlds. If you want something out of the ordinary on Tesla there is only this book and LOST JOURNAL OF NIKOLA TESLA will fit your need.
THE NEW AGE VERSION OF TESLA'S LIFE.......2001-01-09
THIS BOOK IS ONE OF A KIND. . . I have been privilaged to read many books on the life of Nikola Tesla. This is one of the few that delve into the unusual aspects of Tesla's life. The author -- a retired military intelligent officer -- did a background check an found out that Tesla had quite an unusual birth. He suggests that Nikola was actually a highly advanted space being who was reincarnated in an earthly body and left on the doorstep of the couple who raised him. We find that Tesla did have among his friends an inventor from Baltimore by the name of Otis T. Carr who in the l960s constructed his own anti gravity device which he claimed could fly to the moon. He supposed met Tesla many times in the hotel where Tesla lived during the last years of his life. We are treated to many insightful bits of information that have not been published elsewhere. This is a very readable book which anyone who is interested in Tesla's life -- and not so much technical information and patent information which can be found in hundred of other texts -- will find of great benefit.
Worthless tripe.......2000-05-06
In general, I purchase every book about Nikola Tesla or his work. In this case I was P.T. Barnum's classic sucker. There are a lot of bad books out there on this topic but this is the only one I've regretted buying. It has no real information about Tesla that can't be found in any of the serious Tesla works. It contains historical inaccuracies such as Tesla declining a Nobel Prize. And if one can't trust the easy historic things, how could anyone believe the major premise that Tesla is from the planet Venus! The author never bothers to explain how a person from that planet could live without a space suit on the terrifically cold planet earth. Most of the book claims top-secret revelations about area 51, anti-gravity devices, etc. These are all things I've seen or read about in UFO books since the mid-sixties. In fact one of the "secret" devices is an apparatus I remember playing with in electricity class in Junior high school that we called a "Thomson Ring". The diagrams are vague and the explanations meaningless. It doesn't take an inside military intelligence expert to find the bogus information covered in this book from other sources. If this is all the government knows about anti-gravity they are way behind the curve. There is absolutely nothing "reveling" or "astounding" or new in this book. Don't be a sucker like me. Don't waste your money purchasing it; don't even waste your time checking it out from the library. For people who want to know the facts about Nikola Tesla I highly recommend (must read) "TESLA Man Out Of Time" by Margaret Cheney. For people who want the facts in an easy to read format plus some speculation, both mild and wild, I recommend the fictional work "Tesla" by Tad Wise. For information about his equipment and experiments I recommend the original works by the man himself.

Great book, a little rushed.......1999-02-27
This series is FANTASTIC! I got the first book but I wasn'tquite sure I would like it. I was pleasantly surprised!! This is agreat series with some brand new character development and some unique plots. My only criticism of the series would be the conclusion of this book, The ending seemed to be suddenly thrust in to "get the book done." But don't let that deter you from buying this one--they're all GREAT! (Although "Swept Away" is best.)
Totally awesome series.......1998-04-17
I have the first 4 of the White Dove Romance series and I absolutely LOVE them! My mom got them for me for my 15th birthday last year and I totally got hooked on them. I love this one called Mirror of Dreams because it is sooo awesome. Christian girls? READ THIS SERIES!!!!!

I have three of the five books that are out. The next two look really great. This is one of those series that teenage girls can relate too. I am only 14 and those books have really helped me even though the characters are older.
Customer Reviews:
I've never been so bored. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.......2003-11-03
After 100 pages, I just can't read another word. It has been 100 pages of the heroine, White Dove, berating the leading man, Jeremy. 100 pages of her going over how inferior he is and why he will never be good enough for her. 100 pages of him trying everything to receive the slightest kind word from her, but she continues insisting on pointing out all of his short comings.
The characters are typical and flat. The only one I could find any emotion for was Jeremy, and that emotion was sorrow.
I'm very disappointed. I usually prefer books where the female lead character is a strong warrior woman. But this woman was too hard to like.
The story is very slow. After 100 pages, there is no progression towards a future at all. It just stands still.
Generally, I can get through a good book in a day or two. It has taken 3 days to get this far, and I'm not willing to spend another day hoping it will get better.
Having trouble falling asleep at night? Read this book.
Awesome author!.......2001-10-11
Set in 1859, Nebraska Territory. The story followed Jeremy Jones and White Dove. Jeremy had been with the Lakota, Sioux for three years now. That was how long his sister, Jessie, had been married to the chief, White Wolf (White Dove's brother). That was also how long Jeremy had been trying to impress White Dove, in hope she would marry him. She was a s skilled as any male warrior and expected her mate to treat her with respect. She had no wish of her future husband stopping her from hunting and such. Jeremy slowly earned the respect of the tribe. His love of children showed. He even raised two bear cubs. (You'll have to read the book to find out how and why.)
Greed, jealousy, and betrayal showed up in the form of Waho, a Sioux from the Miniconjou branch. He cared nothing for White Dove, but vowed to marry her for the power of her family. He planned to be chief someday. The more Jeremy proved himself to White Dove and the tribe, Waho's jealousy and greed grew.
***** I found this to be an awesome read and highly recommend it to everyone! This series ROCKS! *****
Great Book!!!.......2001-08-09
I have read all of Susan Edwards books, and if you loved them all, White Dove isn't going to disappoint. Even though this is the final book in the series of the children of Golden Eagle and White Wind, this book ties all the ends together nicely. I stayed up all night reading the book, laughing, crying and smiling. One thing is for sure, have a box of kleenex nearby while reading!!!

Wonderful book!.......2004-07-02
(...) I thought it was wonderful. Set in a once-upon-a-time or maybe distant-future, Princess Tasha must rescue the precious documents that prove her father's wishes and escape to help the resistance before she is caught.
Is there ever going to be a sequel to this book? The ending is so exciting that I really want to know what happens next!
The White Dove.......2001-03-24
Although at times the dialogue in The White Dove was a little dull, overall, it was a great book. I loved the book and am eagerly awaiting for a sequel...and possible some romance between Marki & Tasha? I don't know, I'm a sucker for a love story. If you have any affection at all for historical fiction or fantasy or just books in general, read The White Dove.
What a Great Book!.......2001-03-11
Lois Bartholomew is a great writer. When I read the book I started it and couldent put it down. It is so great to see how tasha and her friends tried as hard as they could to achieve a goal. What a great Book. I would recommend this book to anyone!
I couldn't put it down!.......2000-10-11
Even though I love fantasy novels, and the author said right up front that this wasn't a fantasy, the story caught me up and kept me going until the last page. I hope this isn't the only story about Tasha and their resistance movement. When she was in her father's house--which has been taken over by a thoughtless, uncaring dictator, just like the kingdom--my heart was pounding. This is a terrific adventure story, full of hope and all the right ingredients--READ IT!
Absorbing reading!.......2000-08-16
Tasha and a small band of wanderers flee a repressive kingdom and Tasha is determined to return to her father's stronghold to get to the bottom of his secrets in The White Dove, a story of adventure and a girl's bravery. Tasha's affection for her father's kingdom and her struggles to defy a dictator make for absorbing reading.
