4 out of 5 stars Original.......2006-07-21

This book is written with such an original cleanness that I loved it. The thoughts..the words...so neat and compact and heavy.
The heroine, Diana, suffers a tragic loss when her entire family - mother, father, brother - is killed by a drunk driver. How Diana copes and continues filled me with such a deep respect for her and her creator.
The setting is the farmlands of New Jersey where they grow cranberries is bogs. Diana arrives a day before the Cranberry Festival and meets an assortment of characters including Louisa, a woman her age but childish and selfish in comparison; Rosie who is Louisa's grandmother and who is dying from cancer and Jack, Louisa's former lover with whom Diana falls in love. The hope that it represents is everything.
Terrific writing. Loved the pacing.
This book deals with powerful issues but with a deftness of touch that is rare and wonderful.

3 out of 5 stars Problem with the Oh Poor Me's.......2006-07-17

I recently read the Cranberry Queen by Kathleen DeMarco. I found the book really easy to read but the story line was a little over the top. Half way through it I was tired of hearing Diana wallow in her seemingly pit of despair. Now I am not discrediting her sorrow for the loss of her family but I thought that it was a bit much.

4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking book.......2006-06-06

Once in a while you stumble upon a book that touches something inside you and causes you to dig deep inside yourself and reflect on life.

Cranberry Queen was one such book. I picked it up over a year ago but just got around to reading it. The story centers on a woman re-adjusting her life after a horrible car accident. (She wasn't in it, but her entire family was.) The back of the book just mentions an accident, not what it was, etc, but it's all about recovery, and it had been so long since I'd gotten it, that I completely forgotten the publisher's blurb. The entire family-- her parents and brother, are killed by a drunk driver while driving to a "meet the parents" dinner with his new fiancé's folks.

What it did, while I read along as she re-created her life and her world, was to examine mine...to open up those dark fears in the corner of my mind and let them air out, so that they could be safely tucked away again. Worries have to be examined periodically, or else they become the stuff of nightmares.

Anyhow, this book encouraged some soul seraching on my part, and to my mind, that's one of the marks of a good book.

4 out of 5 stars Tragedy = Triumph .......2006-06-03

I had a whole other expectation when I decided to pick up CRANBERRY QUEEN by Kathleen DeMarco. I anticipated an easy, breezy, light-hearted read - but it ended up being so much more than that.

Diana Moore, 33, cannot get over the day her ex-boyfriend - affectionately name "The Monster" - dumped her for another woman. Life can't possibly get worst than the love of your life breaking your heart into a billion little pieces. But it does. In one shot she loses her entire family - mother, father and brother - in a horrific drunk driving accident. As if her sanity wasn't already hanging by a thread.

Starting from that point of her life, Diana becomes a fevered zombie. Feeling repressed and misunderstood by all those around her, Diana makes an impulse decision to quit her job and attempt an escape from all of her problems.

While driving, with no destination in mind, she ends up getting into her own accident, rear-ending a 70 year old grandma named Rosie riding a motorcycle. This accident proves to be a blessing in disguise, bringing her to southern NJ where she befriends Rosie's glamorous granddaughter Louisa.

As Diana waits the few days for her car to get fixed by the town's mechanic, she takes Rosie and Louisa's offer up to stay with them. Diana wavers between the pleasure of a cheerful new location and her proverbial self-condemnations. At the same time, Louisa's ex-boyfriend, who she is still in love with, finds Diana striking and mysterious. She undeniably feels the same way, making Louisa mad, but bringing to Diana the renewal and self-confidence she desperately needed.

CRANBERRY QUEEN is a quick and interesting read that is really amusing and heart-wrenching all at the same time. The characters are truly relatable and the setting is extremely vivid and colorful. It is beyond doubt an inspiring novel about the stumbling blocks of life and the triumphs of overcoming them.

1 out of 5 stars I threw it out........2006-03-17

I have never, ever, ever in my life thrown a book out. I prize them all-paper or hardback; old and new. But this book annoyed me (dare I say angered me) to a level I have never experienced (though The Historian came close). I got to page 93 and thought why the hell am I still reading this garbage? So, I put it where it rightly belongs-in my trashcan.

I second two things I have read by fellow reviewers: this author clearly had some publishing connections as a film producer or she would NEVER have gotten this dreck published. And, second, where was her editor?? Did she have one? Perhaps she doubled as both writer and editor. There could be no other explanation as to how this was ever published.

            Book Description

Favored by few, the St. Louis Cardinals used an unlikely cast of characters to win their first World Series in nearly a quarter century. Manager Tony La Russa's Cards had just won 83 regular-season wins, the fewest by a World Series winner, and nearly missed the playoffs after a late-season slump. But the Cardinals beat San Diego and the New York Mets in the playoffs, then won their first title since 1982 by taming a heavily favored Tigers team that entered the Series with six days' rest. Cardinals Rule follows all of the post-season action from the first pitch to the final out of one of the more improbable triumphs in World Series history.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone that enjoyed the Cardinals 2006 World Series Title.......2007-01-16

This book mainly focused on the postseason run to the World Series title which is what I was looking for. There were lots of pictures to compliment highlights of each series and games. It also talks about the the tail end of the season, how the Cardinals struggled going into the playoffs before devoting itself to the playoff run.

It is what I expected, and wanted, as a Cardinal fan to have as a memento to the season!

This book is pretty good in terms of pictures and captions, but it doesn't offer any substantial insight.

o.k...now I am a big fan of Ms. Delinsky, but this book just wasn't as good as some of her others. I found it to be borning and unexciting. The story just dragged on and on. Really, who would make a business decision solely to meet a woman, who whole idea is just too funny. You know Corinne and Corey are going to end up together, get it over with already.

            5 out of 5 stars A noble edition of a spiritual classic.......2006-12-02

There are many editions of this great spiritual classic, but Cardinal Gasquet's translation of the Rule of Saint Benedict has been out of print for too long. It is a delight to see it reprinted - and so handsomely - leatherbound, gold blocking, silk ribbon, noble endpapers. Baronius have done a great service in publishing it so beautifully.

Its pocket-size renders it particularly useful for the laity who may wish to read a portion each day as they travel, and the dignity of this edition makes it an ideal gift. Cardinal Gasquet's introduction, too, offers valuable insights to the rule and to Benedictine spirituality.

4 out of 5 stars Pure fun to read.......2006-03-03

I mostly only read books in the science fiction/fantasy genre, but I picked up The Cardinal Rule because Dermody is another name used by writer C.E. Murphy, author of Urban Shaman. I'm still waiting on Urban Shaman, but judging by The Cardinal Rule, when I get it I will really enjoy it. Cardinal is a spy thriller - sort of. Those looking for espionage a la Robert Ludlum are doomed to be disappointed, but I wasn't. It's the most fun I've had reading a non-SFF novel in I don't-know-how-long, a blend of Bond-style hecticness with something of the sensibility of TV's Alias (a program I'd like if they cut out the mystical-Renaissance crap and actually added some realism) and a plot that crosses over into what looks like SF territory at times.

It's helped by the fact that it takes itself seriously, but not too seriously, and the heroine, Alisha MacAleer, is just pure fun to read. Absolutely pure fun.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Spy Suspense.......2005-12-30

First in a new series. CIA Agent Alisha MacAleer's new assignment isn't going well. She's immediately "made" and barely escapes with her life. Her ex-fiancee shows up working as an agent for the Russians and her target that she is supposed to be investigating may or may not be one of the good guys. No one seems to be whom they seem and the only thing Alisha is sure of is that she can't trust anyone. This is a series I'm really looking forward to seeing more of. Hopefully Ms. Dermody writes fast.

5 out of 5 stars thrilling suspense tale.......2005-12-15

CIA Agent Alisha MacAleer hates her current assignment. Her handler and mentor Greg Parker informed her that she must go undercover looking into the activities of an American scientist working at a base in Kazakhstani. No matter what she does she knows she will hurt someone dear to her as the target is Brandon Parker, son of her mentor. Still she does the job as the professional she is seeking to learn whether he is developing a robotic soldier and if yes how far along has he come.

However, the investigation falls apart from the beginning as Alisha is outed immediately. Not sure who gave her away, she flees trusting no one; not even those from her agency. Professionals follow her with plans to silence her about what little she has learned.

This thrilling suspense will leave the audience breathless, but also like the heroine bewildered with who is doing what to whom except that everyone seems to be after Alisha. Adding to her confusion (but in this case not the audience) she has no idea what she learned that has made her a target. Readers will commiserate with Alisha as everyone she meets is a potentially deadly stranger especially the wild card Riechart, whom she is very attracted to even though is a freelancer.

            Book Description

In this compelling new book, Judge Lavine claims there are certain recurring, core principles of persuasion that can be studied and when mastered lead to successful advocacy. Lavine's unique interdisciplinary approach draws from history, literature, psychology, drama, religion, and the law to discuss the fundamental principles of effective persuasion that will help all lawyers win cases and avoid serious errors.

Cardinal Rules of Advocacy begins by discussing the need to properly identify your audience and tailor your arguments to its needs. The book then examines the importance of establishing integrity and credibility in the courtroom. Chapter 3, which explores the necessity to think creatively and rigorously in advance of trial, is a provocative essay on barriers to creative legal thinking and advances simple strategies for promoting inventive thought. Lavine then turns to the importance of preparation. Chapter 5, how to frame issues compellingly in favor of your client, is a tour de force on the key elements of the ideal issue statement. Chapters 6, 7, and 8 stress the need to effectively answer questions from the bench, develop a central theme, and use words precisely and persuasively. Lavine concludes the book by discussing the importance of behaving professionally and civilly in court.

Throughout the book, Lavine teaches lawyers to think about advocacy in more creative, effective, and systematic ways while stressing the ethical aspects of effective advocacy. Each chapter is followed by exercises that promote discussion and provide hands-on instruction methods. This book will be of great interest to practitioners, and will also be useful in law schools, seminars, and in-house training programs. Any lawyer-trying cases in court, arguing appeals, counseling clients, or negotiating deals-can learn from and replicate the persuasive techniques found in Cardinal Rules of Advocacy.

Whether just starting to practice law, or a practitioner of many years, you will find Cardinal Rules of Advocacy to be a thought-provoking exploration that will reignite the recognition that advocacy has a noble history and is, at its highest and best, not just a job-but an art form.

5 out of 5 stars Time tested and consistent with current persuasion theory.......2003-07-11

Persuasive argumentation is a critical point of trial advocacy. Even the best legal argument with the most solid logic is useless if it can't be used to persuade the judge or jury to your position. "Cardinal Rules of Advocacy" presents the fundamental principles of persuasion in a clear and easy to understand format. Some of the most important rules are making sure that you understand your audience, tailoring your argument toward that specific audience, establish and enhance credibility, thinking creatively before the trial, total preparation, reframing the issues, and answering and posing questions. Chapter three is an excellent analysis of creative thinking for presenting your case, fallacies, and appeals to emotions. This provides a good solid basis for an argument which when coupled with the credibility and reframing the position produces a persuasive communication. This is a highly recommended read for anyone who needs to persuade others.

5 out of 5 stars Cardinal Rules of Advocacy.......2002-12-27

Cardinal Rules of Advocacy is exceptional as a practical and thought-provoking guide to understanding and mastering the fundamental principles of persuasion, especially for the trial lawyer. Judge Lavine's lucid prose, erudition, wit, and years of experience as a successful trial lawyer and respected jurist all contribute to a book of uncommon insight and utility.

Probing deeper than other books about trial advocacy that merely focus on the rules of evidence, Judge Lavine's book discusses in depth such topics as identifying the audience, establishing and enhancing integrity and credibility, the necessity of thinking creatively, the importance of total preparation, and the need to frame the issues, focus on key themes, and use language precisely and persuasively. The text is greatly enhanced by well-chosen illustrations from law and literature and, at the end of each chapter, musings and exercises that provide the basis for stimulating discussion about each topic covered in the book.

As an experienced trial lawyer and law school teacher of trial advocacy, I have found Judge Lavine's book to be an excellent resource.

Cardinal Rules Of Advocacy is a wonderful book for teaching people how to form and craft an argument. As a college instructor, I find the book to be an extremely valuable text for working with students who have to learn how to stand before an audience and present a cogent, thoughtful, concise and entertaining position on complex issues. All too often, my students fumble and stumble their way through public speaking and debate. But the Cardinal Rules of Advocacy offers insightful methods and techniques for people who want to learn the important skill of making a persuasive argument. As an added bonus, the book features Lavine's incisive prose and sly wit.

5 out of 5 stars Cardinal Rules of Advocacy by Douglas S. Lavine.......2002-12-23

As someone whose legal expertise comes from exercising to Law and Order re-runs, I read Cardinal Rules of Advocacy with an eye towards better understanding the trial process and was rewarded for the effort. The book is lucidly written, humorous, and enlightening.

5 out of 5 stars A classic for our time........2002-12-08

On learning the skill of persuasion, Hon. John W. Davis once quipped that if you want advice on how to catch a fish, learn from a fish, rather than a fisherman. So what better book to read on persuasion than this one written by a judge, rather than a lawyer?

More than just teach how to be persuasive, Judge Lavine reminds us the practice of law is an art. My favorite passage - building on the story of three bricklayers, the first who says he is laying down bricks, the second who says he is building a nave, and the third who understands he is building a cathedral - is this: "When you argue, even in a small case, don't be content to lay a brick or build a nave; try to bring to your work the consciousness of someone who is creating a cathedral."

A wonderful book. If you ever tried to read Aristotle's classic "The Art of Rhetoric," and surrendered, take heart. "The Cardinal Rules of Advocacy" is a classic for our time.

              Book Description

A CURE FOR THE COMMON LIFE: THE CARDINAL RULES OF SELF-ESTEEM is a small but deceptively powerful book that pinpoints 10 specific ways to recognize the root cause of common emotional problems and, at the same time, determine a realistic course for improvement. What makes this book different from so many other "self-esteem" books is author Dr. Catherine Cardinal and her instinctive, straightforward ability to connect with the heart of the problem. Her compassionate and honest comments then provide a realistic view of the many options we have before the next step.

Written in a clear, thoughtful, all-embracing, and entertaining style, Dr. Catherine Cardinal gives you the confidence and support to finally take that giant leap - and change for your own good.
