Anne Murphy thought she'd put her unhappy past a continent behind her when she joined Philadelphia attorney Bennie Rosato's all-woman law firm. Then a friend who's housesitting for Anne is murdered in what's clearly a case of mistaken identity, and Anne realizes that the past has caught up with her and that the only way to outrun it is to catch the killer before he realizes that she's still alive. But how can Anne play dead with a high-profile case just days away from starting? The only way to pull it off is to let her new colleagues in on the secret, which would mean telling them her other secrets, too, including the fact that she's in love with opposing counsel and the probability that her client may not be as innocent as she thought he was. The author deftly weaves the threads of plot and subplot together, helped by Mary DiNunzio, Judy Carrier, and Bennie herself, the familiar and well-drawn mainstays of this lively and solidly paced series (Moment of Truth, The Vendetta Defense, Rough Justice). It's vintage Scottoline, featuring some nice touches; a little suspense, a lot of female bonding, a few pithy asides on the human condition, and a surprise in the penultimate chapter. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Anne Murphy is the redheaded rookie at the Philadelphia law firm of Rosato & Associates, and one morning she wakes up to front-page headlines proclaiming lawyer murdered -- above her own picture. If she wants to stay alive, she's got to play dead. She'll have to trust people she barely knows -- colleagues who hate her, homicide cops who want her out of the crime-fighting business, and a new love who inconveniently happens to be opposing counsel. But her knack for courting trouble makes it almost impossible for Anne to play well with others, and an unexpected event places her in lethal jeopardy and leaves her with everything to lose.

E-book extras: "A Little More About Lisa"; "One Night on My Book Tour": Essay; "The Novels" (Chapter One from each of Lisa's eight prior novels). How many people get to solve their own murder? In Courting Trouble, New York Times bestselling author Lisa Scottoline is back with another fast-paced thriller that sends a young woman lawyer racing to find out who's trying to kill her -- after she's wrongly been reported murdered. Anne Murphy is smart, gorgeous, and young -- the red-headed rookie at the Philadelphia law firm of Rosato & Associates. She leaves town for the Fourth of July weekend to prepare for a high-profile trial, but when she buys her morning newspaper, her own photo is plastered all over the front page. And the headline - LAWYER MURDERED - supposedly refers to her. Anne sets out to find her killer, playing dead in order to stay alive. The investigation takes all of Anne's boldness and ingenuity - plus a pair of red satin hot pants. But her knack for courting trouble makes it almost impossible for Anne to play well with others, defend the lawsuit, and fight her urge to sleep with the enemy. Then an unexpected event places her in lethal jeopardy and leaves her with everything to lose - including her life.

Courting Trouble.......2007-10-06
I almost took this book back to the library several times without finishing it, but the blurb on the back cover led me to believe that, at some point, it would get really interesting. It finally did, but I was so frustrated with Anne, the main character, that it took away from any enjoyment. She knows where a killer is, but does she notify the police or even give them any of the information she has dug up? Heck no, she doesn't even let them know she's really alive. At least twice she found the prison escapee in question and was in his presence, but she still didn't ask for help, even with police officers nearby.
Sorry, but I felt like she was SO stupid, she almost deserved whatever misfortune we readers all knew she was going to run into. She even played the part of a decoy to flush him out, but again, she did this on her own with no law enforcement backup.
This is not Ms Scottoline's best work. I was looking forward to reading it after experience with a couple of her other books but was disappointed. At least, there was no graphic sex or filthy language. I probably should have given it another star, just for that.
Mildly Entertaining.......2007-08-31
Anne Murphy is an attorney for an all female law firm in Philadelphia. She's working on an exhuasting case and decides to leave town for a couple of days for the Fourth of July, and get some much needed quiet time. No sooner does her mini-vacation start when she discovers, via newspaper headlines, that she has been murdered in her own home. How can that be? Should she come forward and let the authorities know she is still alive, or will that only alert the killer to the fact that he/she made a mistake? The bigger question is who would want her dead? I can't tell you the answers to those questions since I don't want to ruin the story for you.
The story was a fun read. Ms. Scottoline displays a nice sense of humor throughout the book. It's not a cerebral novel, so you don't have to do much thinking, you can just relax and enjoy the fun. Those are the good points.
The bad points are poor editting. On more than one occasion, the author makes critical errors, such as a character apologizing for shoving Anne, when in fact, earlier in the story we were told he punched her. This happens a few times, and while it doesn't ruin the book, it certainly takes away from it. Another problem I had with the book was how badly the author tried to create a red herring at the end, but bombed horribly. It was forced and stupid. I was sadly disappointed in the sloppy job.
This book was a fun read even with the problems I mentioned above. As long as you don't expect too much, cause you aren't going to get much, you should enjoy the book.
Light entertainment.......2007-08-08
I bought this novel after some discussion on an Internet Forum. The novel provides some light reading - something like chocolate for the mind. Anne Murphy is similar to Stephanie Plum. If you like the novels about Steph, you will like this novel. If you don't like Steph, than you won't like Anne. The novel is not great literature, but the three stooges were not great theater. Publishers are in a business to make money and novels of this type appeal to an audience looking for light comedy. The novel has its moments, like when the women from the law firm act like happy hookers. The novel opens with a male stripper showing his stuff in a courtroom, and that sets the tone.
There is a plot, actually a couple wound together. Anne is having trouble with a stalker, the reason she left California, and she is defending a man in a lawsuit in a case where he is charged with sexual harassment. There is also a sub-plot about her relationship with her mother. There is a twist at the end, something one expects in Scottoline's novels.
You get a little Philadelphia background along the way, and a picture of 4th of July activities ranging from traffic to the beach, to block parties in the city, to the main event with fireworks.
Scottoline, not at her best..........2007-07-07
I generally like Lisa Scottoline legal mysteries, but this one fell flat. I don't think it was because of the plot, which possessed the requisite suspense and the usual satisfying twists and turns. This book simply is not very well written, nor fact-checked nor edited. In one place, the heroine is driving a VW bug and suddenly we see her emerging out of a "truck" (see page 252). The characters are largely contrived, and the prose is soggy and repetitive. I'm happy to escape into a light suspenseful mystery story with a fantastically beautiful red-headed detective who is just falling in love after a dangerous and disappointing past, but I don't need to hear five-hundred times that she gets her fiery temper and impetuousness from her red hair; I can appreciate the stereotype if I'm told once or twice. Examples of this sort of thing abound. Read Scottoline but skip this installment.
This was the book Scottoline dedicated to "my readers," rather than to the traditional, specific dedicatee. Maybe it's mean to say this, but one wonders if she didn't throw this off to her readers because she was too embarrassed to dedicate it to someone she might actually have to look in the eye. I just don't think she gave this novel her customary scrutiny. It's simply sub-par.
About 150 pages too long..........2007-04-19
After reading the terrible 1st to Die by James Patterson and being exceedingly disappointed, I picked up another mystery, hoping this one would have good characters and a good plot.
Plot:
Anne Murphy is a lawyer for an all-female firm who is defending a CEO friend who is accused of sexual harassment. Anne goes to the coast for a break to study her case when she sees in the newspaper she is dead. She rushes back to Philadelphia to find her murderer before he/she realizes that she didn't die.
Good:
This was a rather enjoyable book. I liked Anne Murphy, her sense of humor (which frequently had me in stiches, particularly at the beginning), the overall plot line (never have read anything quite like this), and even the scenes with her cat (which I found rather cute, but that is just me).
Bad:
There were a few problems that keep me from wholeheartedly recommending the book. The first problem I had was that the book was too long. About halfway through, I grew tired and had to force myself to continue reading. By the time I got to the end, I should have been excited. However, I was just glad it was over.
Next, Anne's character was a little all over the place. Her infatuation with I Love Lucy, while good in and of itself, seemed way too much. I have a hard time believing that someone could remember airdate, episode number, and name (maybe episode number or name, but airdate?). I love LOST, but I can't remember the the episode name or number much less the airdate (and most of those episodes aren't even three years old!). But, even assuming that this made sense (it theoretically could for an obsessive freak), I felt that the references were placed into the story inappropriately. What also made Anne's character more than a little annoying was how stupid she was one moment (leaving her underwear at someone's house) and then how clever she was the next minute (stealing Judy's keys and car). I know we all have ditzy moments, but I felt some of her actions were out of character. Further, why does Anne even leave her friends? One minute, she's cozying up to them, thankful to have friends, and the next, she rushes away to draw her murderer out. Huh?
Every single opportunity, the author wants to make sure we have it memorized (and preferably tattooed) that Anne is absolutely, positively, excrutiatingly gorgeous (even with her scar). Oh, please! We get the picture! Not every man is going to fall all over her for goodness sake! And it made me kinda upset when Mary's parents kept saying (like twice a page) how pretty Anne was. If I was Mary, I would be half tempted to run to my room and cry!
Last beef: what is up with the whole Mrs. DiNuzzio scene? What was that for? It had almost nothing to do with the plot!
Dialogue/Sexual Situations/Violence:
F-word is a favorite, along with typical d***, h***, sh**. Anne sleeps with opposing attorney; a case centers around whether or not her CEO friend forced an employee to sleep with him. We get vivid descriptions of the woman mistaken as Anne after she has been shot and how the room looks like afterward.
Overall:
This wasn't a bad book. I loved the humor, grew attached to Anne (and her history with her mother), and the plot. However, Anne is not consistent as a character and many of the things she does are completely off-the-wall. Definitely a funny read, but not for everyone.

Customer Reviews:
Funny, sad, colorful, educational.......2007-10-01
If you have ever longed to give a young woman hope for her new Christian life after having fallen into sin, this may be the book to give her. Bethany Publishers took a chance, just as did Francine Rivers' publisher, and given the way of the world now, many of our young girls need the hope this book offers. As a morality tale, it probably could be given to college girls. So interesting: taming a snake, the oil well scenes, the bicycling, the very real moral delimma being faced by the new pastor! Now that the books Girls Gone Mild and The Thrill of the Chaste have hit the shelves, Christian fiction may get the point: It's a dangerous world and girls need strong empathetic teaching about purity. I think Deeanne Gist made her point well, and I am looking forward to Essie's continuing spiritual growth.
Bravo!.......2007-09-01
I was really impressed with this book because of its honesty. It takes a lot of courage to write a book that looks at the more difficult side of romance. Ms. Gist includes the men that are not right for her main character. In real life, it is not so easy to find the one person who is actually right for you. I'm impressed that at least one author is brave enough to admit this.
Inspiration fiction at its best..........2007-08-01
Essie is quickly becoming an old maid. At thirty, she is still unwed and living with her parents. Essie has always been spirited, but she's also very spiritual, beautiful and talented, too. Surely there must be a man somewhere that would like to marry her? What should it matter if she likes to fish, ride her bike, catch snakes and live a life full of joyful discovery?
Essie begins to feel a bit desperate, and contrives a way to find herself a husband. She sets her sights on a local shopkeeper, insinuating herself into his business as a means to gain his attention. The ploy works - only too well! Things don't develop quit the way that Essie imagined they would, and soon she finds herself in way over her head! She needs some divine help.
Author Deeanne Gist has created a heart-warming read in COURTING TROUBLE. With a masterful writing style, enchanting characters and a poignant story of everlasting love, Gist has created a keeper in COURTING TROUBLE. COURTING TROUBLE, in addition to providing an engrossing story, also offers a powerful message to all who may doubt their path in life.
The strong feminine character of Essie will both inspire and touch readers, leaving an indelible impression and offering hope to all who may be feeling a bit lost in life. Very few fiction novels can claim to do what COURTING TROUBLE does: leave readers with a beneficial and lasting, spiritual message.
COURTING TROUBLE is a highly recommended read from a very talented author.
A REAL story.......2007-07-31
I always enjoy a book that surprises me. After reading hundreds, you start to recognize a pattern to the romance genre. Deeanne Gist, however, always adds elements that are unexpected. I greatly enjoyed following Essie through her escapades (laughter, tears, and all), recognizing elements of myself all too often. A wonderful character and a great book.
Courting danger more like it.......2007-07-27
While I loved Deeanne Gist's other two novels, this one didn't seem to measure up quite as well. Don't get me wrong - I loved the idea behind the story - of a spinster woman who is so desperate to get a husband that she decides to take matters into her own hands. By the end of the book she realised that she has to have Christ as her "one and only" and I agree totally with that whole thought. I guess I just wasn't sucked into the story as much as I was her previous novels: I wasn't anxious to see what happened next. My main problem with the story however is her overly risqué scenes. Honestly, I almost decided not to keep reading. I felt that if I wanted some of those details I could go pick up one of those cheap, trashy paperbacks. When I read Christian fiction I do it expressly because they're clean. Now I don't mind romance and attraction one bit! It's just those (excuse my use of word) sordid scenes that turned me off.
I hope that Deeanne Gist doesn't keep that up in her other novels. I do intend to read the sequel when it finally comes out, because even though it wasn't the most exciting book I've read, I am interested in seeing what happens next.

The Divine Circle of Ladies Courting Trouble.......2007-03-09
I loved this book , as I have all of this authors work. So much fun and suspense wraped together, impossible to put down.
I want more!!!.......2006-09-15
I love this series of books! Good thrillers that don't give you nightmares or gross you out. The interaction between the circle of friends is engaging. Good for more than a few chuckles and the occasional belly laugh. I've stayed up half the night on more than one occasion because I couldn't put the book down. The Wiccan slant is accurate but not over done, so non-pagans should enjoy this read. I'm hoping there are many more books to come in this series.
the divine circle of ladies courting trouble.......2006-08-19
the only problem with this series is that ms. riccio just can't seem to crank them out fast enough! all the books about these ladies are great romps and this one was no exception.---hurry up with the next one!
Great Fun.......2006-04-23
As usual, The Divine Circle is full of twists, turns, laughs and fun. This series of books was introduced to me by a friend, and I love them. Finally, friends who treat each other with respect, loyalty and life long contributions who enjoy the path they are given.
The books plot is fresh and unusual, which adds to Ms Riccio's outstanding writing.
I for one, can't wait for more.
not as good as the others.......2006-04-10
I have really enjoyed Md Riccio's series of the Divine Ladies, a group of 5 close friends who enjoy each other, a good mystery, and thier belief in the Wicca faith.
This particular book does not seem to be as up to par as the previous due to a couple of impressions I have. First of all, the ladies are supposed to be in thier late 50's/early 60's, yet thier speech is of people much older. The book could use a good 50 pages of editing to tighten up the story, and get rid of extraneous dialogue and a slow start. Also, I didn't enjoy the characters as much as the previous books, due to thier lack of 'fleshing out' and development.
OK, enough of that and onto the story itself. Very intriguing and different, with a great new man of mystery. THe protagonist and thier family definetly will be back with more tricks and hidden dangers. The story kicks into high gear after 100 pages, a bit long for this, but hang in and enjoy.

Book Description
The return of a poignant classic in New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber's NAVY series!
Busy attorney Catherine Fredrickson loved her job at a submarine base in Washington, but her new boss, Royce Nyland, had her spirits sinking fast. The icy widower was distant, demanding . . .and incredibly attractive. And though he kept her at arm's length, he aroused a stormy passion in Catherine that was impossible to deny.
Already struggling to keep afloat while caring for his energetic daughter, Royce didn't need any more distractions -- especially not in the form of an appealing woman! Though the laws of the sea deemed naval fraternizing strictly taboo, how long could Royce resist romance when just the sight of Catherine capsized his vulnerable heart?
Customer Reviews:
Heartwarming and satisfying!.......2007-03-17
Debbie Macomber has a wonderful style of writing that draws the reader right into the setting, so that it feels like the characters are friends and colleagues and we are living and working alongside of. What I appreciated most about this book was that it was so romantic. The two protagonsits were forbidden to be involved with each other because of the Navy's rules against officers fraternizing with their subordinates. Catherine and Royce couldn't express their growing feelings outwardly, so they communicated wordlessly through their eyes and gestures. It was slowly tantillizing, transcending the physical, and was far deeper than merely sexual. Wow! I also appreciated how the welfare of 10 year old Kelly, and both Royce's and Catherine's relationship with her, were a priority over the romance.
Navy Woman.......2006-01-03
I really enjoyed this book. This is one of the first Debbie Macomber books that I read, the first that wasn't a Christmas story. I was thoroughly impressed. It was not as "graphic" as I expected as some other romance novels tend to be, but I wasn't disappointed. I like the fact that a romance novel can have a plot without excessive sex.
You would think that I would better.......2005-07-12
Jag lawyer Catherine Fredrickson has found herself at a new posting and with a new XO Royce Nyland. After a while, Catherine finds herself attractice to her boss, but navy regs will make that will never happen.
This is the second book in the navy series that I have tried to read, but once again I could not get though the book. I know that other reviewers love this series, but I just can't get into these books.
Cute Book.......2004-09-13
I've read many of Ms. Macomber's books. This is not my favorite, but, I did really enjoy it. I especially liked Kelly, the daughter of Royce - I found her to be spunky and typical of a child looking for a mother.
This is one of those books you can get into in a hurry and stay with until the end. I always enjoy reading about the Navy since my own father was an officer and gentleman himself. Thank you, Ms. Macomber for not disappointing this former Navy Brat!
Sally N. Crowe: Author, The Spirit Beside Me
Great Romance.......2004-09-07
What a wonderful romance. A great page turner. Couldn't put it down. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. The books of I've read of Debbie Macomber have never been a disappointment. She's great.

charming account of a sailor's introduction to the navy.......2002-08-27
Johnson captures the essence of what it was like to be a woman in the navy in the early 1970's -- having fun, yet encountering obstacles (usually in male form -- crusty old chief, a commanding officer who thinks women should be making babies, cat-calling marines) at every turn. In this autobiographical account, Johnson details her decision to enlist & escape Ohio, her experience at bootcamp, journalism training, her first duty station at NATO's SACLANT headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia (where she made many pots of coffee), her next assignment at Clark Air Base in the Phillipines (where she lived with a fellow sailor & his Filipina wife and children off-base), and her subsequent assignment to an aviation squadron. The tale ends when Johnson decides to apply for Officer Candidate School. Only by reading the book's back cover do I know hat Johnson went on to become a Marine Corps officer -- I wanted the book to continue so I could learn more of her antics. Throughout the book, Johnson describes her relationship with her best friend and shipmate, Lucas, who constantly ribs Johnson about being a "lifer." Like the real navy, Johnson's story isn't all patriotism & spit-shine. She recounts (with great humor) an experience where a female roommate makes a pass at her, gives the lyrics to sexually explicit jodies, and describes an incident where Lucas picks up a nasty little Army sergeant and dumps her in a trash can. The tale is pleasant, humorous, and very easy to read. At times, I found it to be a bit incredible (incidents of blatant sexism and sexual harassment), but then I would guess that much has changed in the Navy and society in the past thirty years.
I would highly recommend this for any female veteran -- anyone who's been there, who has encountered their own version of the evil Sergeant Burke or the lascivious, girlie-tattoed Chief Hatch.
Anchors Aweigh!.......2002-06-28
I read this book in a library several years ago and feared it was
now out of print. I'm SO glad to see the issue of a contemporary paperback.
A balanced account -- and very fun to read. Or re-read.
I'm recommending this book to anyone who's considering joining the military, or anyone who's young and searching for a way to move to a new career without going broke. Or any woman at midlife who wishes she had joined the navy and handled the life as well as Louanne Johnson did.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting if a little surgar coated.......1998-06-26
Captain Collins gives a very interesting and insightful look into the early trials of Women in the US Navy. Unfortunately one is left with the impression that this nerrative is a little short sided (like Captain Collins claim that she doesn't know of anyone discharged for being Lesbian in all her time in the WAVES.) That being said, the Captain is an inspiring woman and the book is a very nice read. If you are interested in WWII, or women in the Navy, this is a must read, due to the fact that the author is such an influancial figure in the time.

This Should Be Required Reading.......2006-02-10
A very true tale that is told with much candor and humor. Freeman's book is a delight to any who pick it up. It almost makes you feel like you know her ;)
Funny, Tear jerking and everything in between.......2005-07-24
Freeman writes with truth about today's Navy. Her stories and experiences while aboard the USS George Washington will inform any woman what real life is like aboard ship. Not only is this a great read for women but all Americans.
