This has been a wonderful book to turn to when I need biblical counsel. Dr. Bob Moorehead is a wonderful writer and counseler. I recommend it to my friend but it is very hard to find because it is out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource with scriptural refs to help solve problems.......1999-03-08

Counseling Yourself & Others from the Bible by Bob Moorehead is a simply written valuable resource to turn to for good scriptural references and biblically based suggestions to help yourself, friends or clients who come to you seeking comfort, advice or direction. The book focuses on the 33 most common problems including topics such as abortion, backsliding, depression, doubting one's salvation, gambling, homosexuality, inferiority, lust, suicide, marriage problems, anxiety, bitterness and anger.

For each of the 33 areas covered in his book, Moorehead gives an example of a client or a friend with a problem or question. The example is followed by a discussion that might include suggested reasons or causes of the behavior, consequences of the behavior, or anything applicable to the particular problem. In each subject area Moorehead provides scripture references with discussions as to how they apply and also an additional list of "biblical counsel" to read and apply.

Moorehead admits that the book may seem simplistic but encourages everyone going through rough or troubling times to turn to God's Word first. Moorehead is a pastor who has biblically counseled people for 44 years. He believes the Bible is fully inspired and authoritative, the Bible's truths do not change, nor end, and that the solutions to life's deepest problems are in the Bible.

Aficionados of the hit TV show The West Wing who are suffering through holiday reruns will jump right into Brad Meltzer's third novel (after The Tenth Justice and Dead Even), which takes readers into the White House office of the president's own law firm and introduces a first daughter whose complex psychological problems jump-start this fast-paced thriller. Michael Garrick loves his job as deputy counsel, but when he falls for Nora Hartson, the president's daughter, the conflict between his professional ethics and his growing love for her puts him right in the middle of a murder plot that may reach all the way to the Oval Office.

Meltzer excels at plotting, and he knows the back corridors, family quarters, and secret tunnels of the executive branch as well as those of the Supreme Court, which he revealed in his first two blockbusters. He's not as skillful at characterization. It's hard to believe that the sociopathic tendencies of people in a president's inner circle--or even his family--would have managed to escape the scrutiny of an FBI investigation during his rise to power. And Nora, in particular, doesn't quite come off as the misguided victim she must be in order to make the rest of the story credible. But that's not a huge quibble; Meltzer manages to make Edgar Simon, Michael's boss, the most interesting White House counsel since John Dean. The First Counsel is a cleverly commercial mix of legal thriller and political chicanery guaranteed to keep you turning pages until Meltzer puts the third branch of government in his sights, too. --Jane Adams

And when Michael Garrick, a young White House lawyer, begins dating the irresistible Nora, he's instantly spellbound, just like everyone else in her world. It's a world all of us have heard about but few of us really know. A world where power is an aphrodisiac, your father is the president, your close friends wear earpieces and carry guns, and everyone watches your every move. Like most, Michael thinks he can handle the pressure. Until, while together late one night, he and Nora witness something they were never meant to see--and become ensnared in a secret agenda, a scheme by a White House insider that includes betrayal and murder. Suddenly, this young Washington power broker, who just yesterday was out on a dream date, finds himself trusting no one, not even Nora, in a battle to prove his innocence. It's a battle that will shake the walls of the Oval Office to their foundations--and may ultimately cost Michael Garrick his life. In a fresh and knowing voice, Meltzer takes us down the rabbit hole of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and paints a riveting picture of a danger only one man will know--what it's like to fall in love with the world's most powerful daughter.

Brad Meltzer is the king of mystery novels... i am a mystery junkie, and every one of his books keeps me hooked until it's over... when is the next one coming out??

4 out of 5 stars Good, if somewhat implausible.......2007-05-27

What is it with First Daughters? I suppose it's the fact that since 1993, all the Presidential children have been girls in their teens to twenties that has created a fictional trend towards daughters over sons in the White House. In recent years, we've seen big names such as Natalie Portman, Mandy Moore and Katie Holmes all playing First Daughters; I'm hard-pressed to think of a recent First Son. Brad Metzler's The First Counsel fits squarely into this pattern.

The main character is actually Michael Garrick, a lawyer working in the White House. As the story opens, he is out on his first date with Nora Hartson, the President's daughter (there actually is a son too, but he is virtually invisible in the novel). Nora, twenty-two and just out of college, decides to test her boundaries by evading the Secret Service and taking Michael to a off-the-beaten path bar which turns out to be a gay bar. The plot thickens quickly enough when they see Michael's boss, Edgar Simon there, although Simon doesn't see them.

At Nora's insistence, they follow Simon, where they see him drop off an envelope at the side of a road. After he leaves, they find cash in the envelope, some of which Nora pilfers and eventually winds up in police custody after they're pulled over for speeding. To avoid scandal, Michael claims it's his money, a claim he will soon regret, as he winds up being implicated in, among other crimes, blackmail, drug dealing and murder.

For Michael, the toughest part is trying to figure Nora out, and whether she is an innocent victim who needs protecting (any implication of her involvement could derail her father's re-election campaign) or is involved to a degree herself. Often presented in the media as a troubled young woman with more than her fair share of drug abuse, she knows she is walking a thin line.

Metzler is a decent writer who keeps things moving well enough to merit a low four stars for this novel. On the plus side, the plot is pretty good, but there are flaws also. I think that it's a mistake to try and keep the politics in the story rather vague; it hurts some of the realism. In addition, I have strong doubts that any presidential candidate, like Hartson's rival, would ever directly attack members of the First Family; such an attack would backfire no matter what the relatives were like (it'd be more realistic to rely on the media to do all the dirty work).

The biggest problem, however, is Michael himself, who is not only not very bright at times, but is also just a weak character. Throughout most of the book, he is incapable of any real actions but merely reacts to situations. With a weak central character, it is surprising that this is still a reasonably entertaining novel. I suppose this is the literary equivalent of the popcorn movie: a lightweight diversion that is never meant to be looked at critically.

3 out of 5 stars Overwrought.......2007-05-16

Starting with Meltzer's first novel, "The Tenth Justice," I've now read four of his books and am embarking on the fifth (The Zero Game). Often, when I find a new author, I read their books in the order in which they were written. With Meltzer, it honestly doesn't matter much because he starts each book with a clean slate, and has yet to resurrect any of his characters or even give them a cameo appearance in later books.

I can't quite put my finger on what it is about Meltzer's style that I find hard to digest, but he reminds me a bit of a Michael Bolton song. It is like every phrase has to be italicized and carry three exclamation points. There is just something a little too breathless and overwrought in the storytelling...as though the characters are on massive doses of adrenaline 24/7. I realize thrillers are supposed to be exciting and edge-of-your-seat, but that isn't what I'm talking about here. The pace of the story itself can be breakneck, and the plot can be suspenseful, but in almost all Meltzer's books the characters themselves are too amped up to come across as real. Frankly, there is sometimes a thin line between excitement and exhaustion, and I'm finding his books lean more towards exhausting than exciting. I'm curious to see if anyone out there shares my opinion on this after having read a couple books by Meltzer. I'm not basing this assessment on a single book, but rather as a recurring part of his style. I also find that the dialog is often overly witty...as if people aren't really talking to one another, but rather at one another...always trying to one-up each other by raising the cleverness high bar.

This particular book centers around Michael Garrick, a young White House lawyer who finds himself unexpectedly dating the President's daughter, Nora Hartson. Hartson, sick of the Secret Service shadowing her every move and depriving her of a private life, turns out to be not just a "wild child," but a near-psychopath, taking Garrick on an adrenaline-fueled ride through D.C. on their first date that ultimately ends on a deserted road where they are shocked to secretly see Garrick's boss leaving an envelope with $40,000 inside for some unseen person. Drug money? Bribery? Garrick and Hartson aren't sure, but when Hartson pockets $10,000 of the money on one of her unexplainable whims and the pair are later pulled over by the police for speeding, Garrick tries to cover for the "First Daughter" and quickly finds himself at the center of not just an investigation into stolen money, but murder as well. The rest of the book unfolds as a true "whodunnit" where Garrick doesn't know if he can trust anyone...his boss, Nora, his friends, his colleagues, the police, the FBI, or the Secret Service.

The story itself was good enough, and believable enough, but as I said in the first portion of this review, the style is my problem here - not the story. It feels a bit like listening to a 33 rpm record at 78.

I give it 3 stars - more for the story itself than for the storytelling. Actually, if I could fine tune the rating, it would be more like 2.5 stars...a C rather than a B-.

I loved this book. The more I read it, the more I wanted to read it. A book that kept me wondering! Easy-reading. Powerful visualization.

Unforgetable.

4 out of 5 stars Meltzer delivers one compelling cliffhanger after another.......2006-09-16

The future looks bright for Michael Garrick, a young attorney working in the White House. Only a few years out of law school, he's a rising star in the current administration, doing challenging, useful work. Besides that, he's just begun a covert relationship with the vivacious Nora Hartson, the President's daughter.

On their first date, Nora ditches her Secret Service escort and drags Mike to what they subsequently realize is a gay bar. Later that same evening they spy Mike's boss, White House Counsel Edgar Simon, at the bar. Intrigued, they follow him to a deserted stretch of woods, where Simon deposits an envelope stuffed with cash. Already nervous, Mike becomes even more flustered when he discovers that Nora has impulsively stolen $10,000 from the envelope, which, to his dismay, is subsequently discovered in his glove compartment by a DC cop who has pulled them over, suspecting them of being drug dealers. Mike chivalrously tells the cop that the money is his, thereby helping Nora avoid scandal.

Mike spends the next few hours screwing up his courage to inform ethics officer Caroline Penzler about Edgar Simon's actions. When he finally does, she informs him that Simon has just accused Mike of the same thing. When Penzler is murdered only a few minutes after Mike's departure, the mounting circumstantial evidence points directly at him. Finding himself mired in an untenable situation that could cost the President his office, Mike struggles to prove his innocence.

A classic race against time enhanced by an inside view of the White House, The First Counsel blends elements of the Kevin Costner film No Way Out with some found in TV's The West Wing to good effect. Although it's true that the "lawyer in trouble" subgenre is certainly crowded, The First Counsel is well worth your time - the book's breathless pace and Meltzer's uncanny talent for delivering one compelling cliffhanger after another make for a gripping read.

Yes, this book contain some very useful information but it's relatively basic. I'm giving the book only two stars based mostly on price. This book sold for $14.95 in 1994 and yet some of the lowest selling prices are around $95. In all the years of buying books through Amazon this is hands-down the poorest value for the money. A more reasonable price might be between $30 and $40.

Street Poetry was written through vision. It was a calling from a higher being something like a gift while I was serving my sentence. Every line was like breathing a different kind of air. Every word demanded attention and believe me when I tell you attention it got. It made violent men listen in peace. It touched the hearts of many but it also hurt some of the ones I love. It revealed things that even I'm not ready for and sometimes it scares me. My own words of advice taught me how to be humble and patient. A robber would have to kill me for this that's my hand on the book it would be written in blood. It's a chess players dream. It's a table of many fruits it brings strength to the weak. It makes the petty get major. It also helps you move with a cooler walk and helps the thinkers think. It gives hope to the ones that are down in their luck. Every line tells a story it's a song sung by fat ladies. For some its treasure even profitable. Its life painted with a clear overseeing. Its love but at times it could also be violent. The streets move at a very fast pace you may feel you're in the race when you're reading this poetry!

The book seems to have succeeded in it's apparent objective. It gives many useful suggestions as to how a business should approach producing a video. There are a number of places where the technical material is quite dated. (1992) This is before DV (digital) camcorders, etc and before NLE (non-linear editing) was popular. The data on horizontal resolutions of various formats is not accurate in several particulars.

It is quite valuable for a business person who has never produced a video and needs to learn what to learn. It is easy to assimilate.

Known as the Irish Lion, Miles immediately suspects the modern-day beauty of being a spy. He takes Faith as his hostage, only to discover her feminine wiles are incredibly alluring. But desperate to return to the future, Faith has no time for love mutton-feasting, ale-quaffing brute like Miles. Yet with each passing day her own time and staying with the charming rogue, Faith knows her heart has been pierced to the quick, but she wonders if their love will always be a double-edged blade.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Wonderful Time Travel Tale!.......2004-07-06

What an enjoyable book! I usually breeze through books fairly quickly, but seemed to take my time enjoying this one. The characters, Faith and Miles, were easy to love. The relationship that developed between Faith, a British agent from the present and Miles, an Irish rebel, was so natural that it seemed like I knew them as actual people! Moffett did a great job developing their personalities, as well as their interactions between each other.

I highly recommend this book if you are a time travel fan, as well as appreciate well-developed characters. This is a keeper! :-)

              4 out of 5 stars a wonderful story!.......2002-02-10

Ok get your tissue out for this one. I love time travel stories and Julie Moffett has created a wonderful one here. This is the first of two books the second being"Across a Moonswept Moon" which I read by accident first. I loved it also. This book is the story of Faith, a modern woman who works for British Intelligence and is sent on a mission to Ireland. She is positioned in a famous Druid circle of stones. There she meets up with the terrorist she was seeking and a struggle ensues. Somehow they are both sent through time to Ireland in the year 1648. The terrorist runs off and she is found by the handsome Miles O'Bruaidar, who is also known as the Irish Lion, a man who has been causing havok to the British who are invading. She at first doesn't realize she is in the past and when it finally hits her she fears revealing it to Miles, although she trusts him with her life. Together they must over come her fears, The hated British, the traitors to the Irish and many more to stay together. This story made me cry and laugh and I would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars This book deserves 10 Stars!.......2001-05-01

This book is incredible...could not put it down... from the very beginning Julie Moffett builds solid characters that you can relate to and want to believe in... Not only was this book romantic but it was loaded with adventure! Faith Worthington is an agent sent to Ireland to expose an Irish terrorist... She has prepared herself mentally and physically for her mission...unbeknownst to her that her mission would also take her across time and into the arms of an amazing Irishman! Julie Moffett builds a male lead that you want to believe in and takes your breath away just in his presentation alone... I truly had a hard time putting this book down because there was always another twist or turn...whether it be in Faith's self preservation of her life or her heart... I 100% recommend this book, you will not regret it! Please keep writing more books Julie Moffett... I can't wait to see what new adventures you've put together...

              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2000-04-13

I only have 20 pages left to read, but I had to let people know my opinion of the book. This book was wonderful. I could not put it down and hate the fact that I am so close to the end, but have to work! I think the author did a wonderful job, especially with creating the feelings of Faith in finding out she had been transported back in time and also of Miles' feelings when told she was from the future. The story has kept me on the edge of my seat, not wanting to sleep or eat because I would have to put it down. She did a wonderful job. This is definitely a keeper and I eagerly look forward to her next book.
