Professional Help for the Private Collector.......2000-01-24
This book was assigned reading in the Museum Studies program I completed several years ago. I found it to be very readable and useful. It is geared to the person who is serious about preserving the treasures he or she has collected or inherited. Among its lessons is the fact that virtually everything we do to maintain our everyday household objects is not appropriate for objects that we would like to see survive for the long term. This book provides valuable guidance on what can be done to preserve the objects we value most. Today, I am a curator of a diverse museum collection, and still find this book helpful and a good refresher.
Excellent for museum professionals without experience.......1998-10-21
I'm purchasing my second copy of Caring for Your Collections. I am the curator of a house museum with a very diverse collection and I have found this to be a handy reference guide with easy to follow instructions for dealing with a wide variety of materials.

Handy Reference.......2007-01-11
This is a small book that gives the readers a basic understanding of how to care for any collection. Broken down into collection type (textiles, photographs, porcelain, toys, glass, etc.), the use of pictures and easy to understand principles has served as a quick reference to let me know what kind of preservation care would be needed for a certain item. Of course, the book is not designed to be the ultimate reference on detailed preservation care, but unless you're an expert and can access the detailed information you need from your own shelves, this serves as something that gives correct information without overwhelming those of us who might care for a personal collection or who have come across an item we are unfamiliar with. Very useful and one of my favorites!!

This is a great book and I have used some of the info provided to care for some textiles that I have.

GREAT REFERENCE BOOK.......2001-02-10
Every household should have this book along with encyclopedias and a dictionary. Dr. Caravella writes so the ordinary layman can understand the issues. He also writes without regard to a physician's point of view, and keeps the patient uppermost in his mind. I would encourage everyoneI know to purchase this book, and keep it to refer to it as needed. Also Dr. Caravella practices what he preaches. I know as I have been exposed to his medical help over a period of 20 years. Nice job.

This book takes "self-help" to an entirely new level!.......2000-10-28
"Self-Fullness: The Art of Loving and Caring for your 'Self'" takes the genre of the "self-help" book to an entirely new level.
Though we are always told that we cannot fully love someone else without loving ourselves, "Self-Fullness" demonstrates this theory with practical self-evaluations and activities.
Dr. Forman gives clear examples of how you can evaluate the situations in your own life and achieve the goal of what she terms "self-fullness," which is really an enhanced all-around self-esteem.
"Self-Fullness" isn't just for those who see problems in their life or seek therapy; it offers valuable tools for all of us to find ways to true inner satisfaction.

The Art of Fashion Draping.......2006-02-27
Good information in general, but there a lot of instructions that are unclear and/or EXTREMELY poorly edited (spelling/grammar mistakes etc). The book itself is not good quality and pages are already starting to fall out of my barely-month-old copy.
good intro to draping.......2000-03-15
Excellent intro for novice sewers as a text, or experienced sewers wanting to learn draping skills. Covers tools/equipment, terms/elements of draping, the basic bodice/skirt/shift/sleeve, princess bodice/dress, skirt variations, pants, sleeve and armhole variations, collars, cowl necks, yoke variations, knits, and a few intermediate fashion features like sculptured pleats, bias, boned bustier, ruffles/flounces/gathering, and peplums. To follow the exercises, you must have a dress form (preferrably professional) to work with. But with numbered steps giving a very simplified process, and the very clear and numerous b/w diagrams, you should be able to teach yourself the rudiments of draping unless you are also a beginner at sewing. As a veteran sewer and novice draper, I received this as a textbook for my first draping class and appreciated it as a reference. But it's no substitute for a beginning sewing class. I would strongly recommend this for home sewers ready to move beyond commercial patterns or for first year fashion students.

Draping for Fashion Design.......2007-03-15
A great book for anyone with sewing, patternmaking, and clothing design experience. Not a novice book, however. You need to understand clothing design and patternmaking terminology to use this book. Well written, well illustrated.
AMAZING! and not written by grandma, god love her. .......2007-02-25
This book is awesome!!! I'm 26, have sewn from patterns (and modified patterns) since I was 10. But with this book, I've found a more satisfying and immediate approach. I read reviews of several draping books, and this seemed the most straightforward. Since it was created specifically for an class, it if full of instructions and specifics. Most of the excercises show a bulleted list of steps, broken down simply, that you just have to jump in and do. If you try to read for comprehension, you'll never get it. Very hands on, and very to the point........
.......I mean, there's no BS from a grandma who taught herself to drape boxy quilted blazers, and then gives tips on where and how to bedazzle said blazers. Which is the approach that about 99% of sewing books take. I mean to say that it is timeless, ageless, and just what you need to feel confident in making whatever you imagine.
Order this book! Buy a form and some supplies and show us what you've got!!!
very informartive!.......2006-07-15
This book contains allot of basic information on draping. The instructions are thorough and are acompanied by visuals, for extra comprehension. It also has a section dedicated to draping knits, a real plus! My understanding of the draping method, and therefore my skill, has improved on account of this book.
Exactly what you need to know.......2003-03-20
I studied at FIT in NY, and this was required reading for my first draping course. It seems that a careful read of this book alone could have taught me what I needed to know. It takes practice, but boy, if you want perfect results, follow this book to the letter and it will get you there!

it's very useful.......2007-01-04
it's required txet book for our college.
it's readable and understandable easily.
if you are a serious learner in this field, it's the one for you.
Draping for Apparel Design.......2006-08-25
Excellent book about drapping and worth to buy especially for the beginner who learn how to modify your basic pattern, it would be better if in the next edition shown how to modify the pattern more specifically, with measurement sample.
Perfect book for the first-time draper.......2006-01-24
I wanted to wean myself off dependency on commercial patterns and having invested in a dress form, I came across this book. It's a bit pricey but it turns out that it's a fashion school text book, hence the price tag. The text is very well-written and illustrated. The author has the reader analyze a fashion drawing, and identify the structural components of a particular garment as most embellishments can be broken down to basic components (i.e. dart excesses).
My only peeve was that some definitions for terms I wasn't familiar with (e.g. Princess Line) couldn't be found in the back of the book. Also, not all the formats seen in fashion are portrayed in this book. Most, if not all, garment examples have a waist or empire seam, and designed for woven fabrics (no knits); and as far as I can tell, the author doesn't direct the reader/student on how to accomodate for that. However, I am happy that there is a section on bias-cut gowns (the info. is very hard to come by on the Net) As a self-taught sewer and wanna-be designer, this book will definitely help me to go to further.
Professional guidance for the creative sewer.......2005-08-13
A detailed, step by step guide for designing using the drape method. Easy to understand and also inspiriing. I wanted a way to create the designs I had in my head. This makes it so much clearer. A great resource to have.
See it and learn!.......2001-05-26
This book is so beautifully illustrated, you hardly need to read a line. To me, draping is the most rewarding method of apparel design, in that what you see is what you get -- no sketching, drafting, sewing up a muslin, and then seeing the results. That is why I find this book to be the best of all popular draping texts on the market today. The instructions are clear, the book itself is clean and well laid out. The illustrations are flawless. You can follow the drawings and easily achieve the same results. There is so much clarity in the way the material is presented, it's easy to use, easy to understand, and easy to learn from. The quality of this book is similar to her pattern drafting book. I would recommend any book authored by Helen Joseph-Armstrong, as you will certainly get the best book on the subject. This book is absolutely delightful.

Customer Reviews:
Maybe not for complete beginners.......2005-09-01
So far this is the only book I have seen, that systematically explores possibilities, even those nobody would wear in daily life.
For evening dresses there are other rules and the effect is surprising. To be fair, I tried it so far only with fabric scraps, but what I tried, worked as designed. What I like is that the effect is due only to the pattern, a plain fabric and no decoration still make a great dress, maybe even better than with a splendid pattern and a fabulous trim. Just plain fabric.
I have had great fun with this book. True, if you like me don't even know what a block is, other than associations from childhood about wooden cubes with letters on it, you need other books too. I showed this one to my sewing teacher. She explained how to interpret the instructions and told me what to read first about the basics. While I read about blocks, she read this book. She was very enthusiastic about it.
Other people think it a good book, too. That's how my first copy went (sold to sewing teacher) and the second one (replacement because somebody borrowed the first from her and apparently never returned it).
And now I would buy it for the third time, if the secondhand price was not that ridiculouly high for a paperback.
Anybody not totally satisfied with this book, you know what to do. Sell yours to me.
How to Draft a Strapless Bodice Sloper for Evening Wear!.......2003-08-01
This book is not for beginners in dress drafting. But even though I'm a novice, I did find the information informative... drafting dressy clothes requires starting with a different sloper rather than the slopers used in the drafting of regular daytime garments. The books on this subject are hard to find and limited, so this book would still be helpful for someone seeking information on drafting evening garments. I believe it is meant to be a supplement to further study. I would say that it would help someone who already is intermediate or advanced in drafting to start exploring drafting evening garments. I did enjoy this book very much!

Never judge a book by its cover!.......2002-11-12
I forgot the old adage and was seduced by the dazzling photo on the cover, but that was where my joy ended. To put it simply this book was very DISAPPOINTING!
My first problem was that after the author went into a lengthy diatribe about the importance of a well made primary block, (which all her secondary blocks are made from), she gave no instructions on how to make one.
The book continues along this vein of vagueness and half-explanations, which means one would need to have enough previous pattern-cutting experience in order to fill in the blanks. Therefore I would say this book is definetly NOT for beginners because most will be very confused.
I dont think the book will be very usefull to the advanced pattern cutter either because the styles she explains are very basic and you would probably have come across them in other patterncutting books where they were not being touted as "eveningwear".
The book also mentions draping in its title, which I find laughable as it covers draping on a total of THREE pages and with the exception of a cowl-neck top, I dont think ruching bits of fabric across the shoulders really qualifies as draping.
Suffice to say I do not recommend this book to ANYONE, as I found it totally useless, and I only gave it one star for the pretty picture on the cover which I shall frame to remind me CAVEAT EMPTOR!
