Book Description

Nathan Glass has come to Brooklyn to die. Divorced, retired, estranged from his only daughter, the former life insurance salesman seeks only solitude and anonymity. Then Glass encounters his long-lost nephew, Tom Wood, who is working in a local bookstore -- a far cry from the brilliant academic career Tom had begun when Nathan saw him last. Tom's boss is the colorful and charismatic Harry Brightman -- aka Harry Dunkel -- once the owner of a Chicago art gallery, whom fate has also brought to the "ancient kingdom of Brooklyn, New York." Through Tom and Harry, Nathan's world gradually broadens to include a new circle of acquaintances -- not to mention a stray relative or two -- and leads him to a reckoning with his past.

With The Brooklyn Follies, the always astonishing Paul Auster has written what is undoubtedly his warmest, most exuberant novel, a moving, unforgettable hymn to the glories and mysteries of ordinary human life.

5 out of 5 stars AUTHOR'S READING: THE PERFECT VOICE.......2006-02-21

New Jersey born Brooklyn based Paul Auster has given us memorable poetry, golden short stories, and bestselling novels, including Oracle Night, The Book of Illusions and Timbuktu.
He sets his latest novel in his chosen home, Brooklyn, and introduces Nathan Glass, a very ordinary man who helps us to see the extraordinariness of life.

Nathan is 59 years old, at one time he was a life insurance salesman, and he has returned to Brooklyn to die. He's divorced, and has no contact with his only child. All Nathan wants is to be left alone; he doesn't want to be bothered and he won't bother anyone.

However, it's not long before he meets his nephew, Tom Wood, whom he hasn't seen in years. Tom now works in a bookstore owned by Harry Brightman. It is through Tom and Harry that Nathan is drawn into the world and meets new people in the Park Slope neighborhood.

At times, it doesn't sound as if Nathan or his friends think much of life; in fact, they say the world stinks. We hear Harry saying that they try to avoid the world. To this Tom replies, "We're right in the thick of it, whether we like it or not. It's all around us, and every time I lift my head and take a good look at it, I'm filled with disgust. Sadness and disgust. You'd think World War Two would have settled things, at least for a couple of hundred years. But we're still hacking each other to pieces, aren't we? We still hate each other as much as we ever did."

However, listen as the story evolves as does Nathan.

From the stuff of everyday life Auster has fashioned a hopeful, uplifting story. Hearing it read in his voice is a joy as he segues between the voices of Nathan, Tom and Harry during their dinner table conversations. Auster's voice is deep, his accent Eastern - a perfect fit.

5 out of 5 stars The Wild Rose of Kilgannon.......2007-08-10

This is another excellent historical adventure written by Kathleen Givens. If you are like me and "love a story", the "Kilgannon Series" should be put on the top of your list.

4 out of 5 stars Drama and Trauma Continue.......2007-07-16

The sequel to Kilgannon, Wild Rose of Kilgannon picks up almost precisely where its predecessor left off. Alex Macgannon, Earl of Kilgannon, has been seized by the English after the failure of the Jacobite uprising, and his wife Mary is left at home trying to hold his family and clan together. Once it is determined that Alex will face trial and probable execution, Mary takes matters into her own hands and follows him, first to Edinburgh and then back to her native London, doing all she can to free him from his captors. Aided in her quest by Alex's loyal kinsmen and clan and her own aristocratic family, Mary must continually face the very real probability that her husband's life will be forfeit and that she will be left alone and destitute with his children.

This is a worthy sequel to the first book, and the action does put one in mind of the Outlander series. There is much trauma involved and Mary and her family are not always infallible. It is easy to believe that events might have played out this way for those Scottish lairds who joined in the uprising. Again, Givens glosses over any sexual scenes, leaving all to our imaginations, which actually creates a deeper emotional bond between the characters.

A few nitpicky things bothered me, however. First, that Mary finds herself pregnant after one night with Alex, and after several previous miscarriages, has little to no difficulty carrying the baby, despite the major stress she is under, did not seem plausible to me. Second, the author chose to continually have the characters cry "I love ye, lass," and "And I you, my love" until I wished they'd find some other way to express themselves. Minor irritations, to be sure, but some tighter editing might have made this good novel into an even better one. A fine entry into the historical romance category and one that will have you staying up to find out just how Mary and Alex are going to find their happily-ever-after.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-03-06

Yes, agreed, read Kilgannon first.
I am mesmorized by this time period and this land, Scotland, that is.
I am interested to see if Givens takes on for #3. She certainly left it open to the possibility.

3 out of 5 stars Much better than the first.......2004-08-24

I was very disappointed after reading Kilgannon and questioned whether or not to even read this book. After completing it I am glad that I did. This second book in the series was much better written than the first and definitely more interesting. I think that Kilgannon and The Wild Rose of Kilgannon should have been made into one book instead of two. I think that people would have been more receptive to the story had it been complete given that Kilgannon was more like an introduction and not an entire story.

5 out of 5 stars As good as KilGannon.......2003-05-28

The love story of Alex and Mary continues...Alex MacGannon prefers not to fight in the upcoming war between the English and his fellow Scotsmen. However, his friends, the MacKinnon and the MacDonald, persuaded Alex into join James Stewart's cause. Alex leaves behind his beloved Mary Rose and his two sons from a previous marriage to fight for Scotland's freedom. However, Alex finds the Scottish leadership lacking in both courage and tactics. He stayed with his fellow Scotsmen even when James Stewart flees to France (Coward!!)and leave them to fret for themselves. Alex refuses to go home in spite of missing his family and his home greatly. He wants to be sure that all his people return home safely and in doing so, he is forced to surrender to the English, who imprison him in the Tower. Though English, Mary risks her own safety by travelling to London to save the man she loves. This is an amazing sequel of the KilGannon and Alex is an amazing hero, who understands loyalty as he insures his men safely return to their homes. And Mary, who gave up everything to go to Scotland with Alex, is more than willing to give up even more for her beloved's freedom. This is a must read for you Scottish Romance readers out there!! But as I finished the last page, it does make me wonder if there will be another book after The Wild Rose of KilGannon.....Wouldn't it be great? ;) I hope so...

The historical background has adventure and suprise that keeps your interst page after page. If you "love a story" this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read for Outlander Fans!!.......2007-08-07

Having been a huge fan of Diana Gabaldon's outlander series for years I was always searching for something in a similar genre ( if you can classify the Outlander series to only one genre ;) ) when I came across Kathleen Givens. Her writing is so emotionally evocative, that you cannot help but be completely absorbed by the story she tells, and her characters become a part of you. Like Gabaldon, she does not write cookie- cutter fantasy romance or fairy tale novels, she infuses her tales with the entire scope of human emotion, love and death, life and loss, heartbreak and joy, and you will find yourself crying along with the characters, or sometimes even for them. She is quite simply an astounding author, and I would highly recommed, this book, as well as all of her books to anyone who wants and absorbing, memorable read. Her tales are ones that you'll not soon forget, and the end of each book will leave you clammoring for the next.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-06-01

I just loved this story. Yes it is lighter than Gabaldon's Outlander, but it is a sweet romantic adventure nonetheless and deserves to be recognized for what it is. If you compare everything to Outlander you are bound to be disappointed with anything else you read. I loved the lead and supporting characters. The Earl of Kilgannon is no Jamie Fraser, but he has his own unique qualities and is very worthy to be considered one of my favorite most romantic heroes. He was very sweet and sexy.

4 out of 5 stars Good historical romance.......2007-05-28

Kathleen Givens's Kilgannon is set in the early 1700s at the time when Queen Anne is dying and her successor is being named--not the Scottish James Stuart, her half-brother and a Catholic, but the foreign German George, a Protestant. This historial backdrop is the basis behind much of the tension carried throughout this romance between Mary Lowell, an Englishwoman, and Alexander MacGannon, a Scottish earl who wins her heart.

The romance between Mary and Alex is very well-played; we see her leave her safe future in London with Robert Campbell to follow her man and her heart into the Scottish Highlands. Givens captures the Scottish speech patterns very well, though it does seem as though Alex's personality changes subtly when he leaves London society and moves into his own clan. Mary is in love with her husband but not his manipulative brother Malcolm; she must become a mother to Alex's two young sons by his deceased wife; she must learn how to run an isolated castle; and she must deal with the heartache of repeated miscarriages. Givens does not make Mary's life a fairy tale, nor does she make Mary a totally understanding wife; we're told more than once of the fiery clashes between the two, and Mary is not one to let go of an idea once it takes hold. The crisis between the two reaches its head when Alex must choose whether or not to join his fellow Scots in an uprising against the new King George and Mary, as an Englishwoman, must do what she can to make sure he doesn't. The book ends on a cliff-hanger that naturally makes me want to search out its sequel immediately.

Givens has constructed a well-written historical romance, and her two main characters are certainly flawed, identifiable individuals. If you are looking for hot, steamy sex, you won't find it here; Givens's intimate scenes are glossed over without details, though the emotional bonding is definitely there. There were times when I wanted to strangle Mary, or Alex, or both, and times when I wanted the story to move faster than it did. But overall this book kept me engaged and made me want to continue to follow the adventures of this intriguing couple. Recommended for those who enjoy historical romance, and particularly those who like the time period.

4 out of 5 stars Worth Reading, but don't expect another Outlander.......2007-03-06

I treaded along from Romance to Romance after I read through D.G's Outlander series twice until I came upon this 2-book series last week. This book is a nice simple romance of English Lady meets Scottish Laird. It deals with the turbulent times and political unrest of the English and between the two countries.
O.k., everyone likes a man in a kilt!
While, unlike some of the other commenters, I was not looking for an Outlander comparable, I did notice several common threads between the two. But, good authors are also good readers. The timeframe was 30+ years pre-, and although Alex's full name did bare the Alexander, Malcom, Fraser and possibly Mackenzie part of Jamie's name, I don't think there are any similarities between the two stories.

What it did do for me, in terms of Outlander, is fill in a bit more about Simon of Lovat's position in 1715 as well as other notable Highlander names.
I would recommend this series before jumping into Outlander, if for nothing else, to better establish some historical Highlander timelines.
All in all, I enjoyed the book.

Book Description

In this bold and provocative new book, Diplomatic Divorce, Tom Kilgannon argues that failure to understand the United Nations and the motivations of the people who run it imperils not only America's international sovereignty but ultimately America's independence. Kilgannon, who has reported from UN events around the world, provides an eye-opening look at how a corrupt haven of second-rate bureaucrats from third-world countries is dictating the future of the world's only superpower—and leading us down the road to ruin.

In Diplomatic Divorce, Kilgannon contends that the United Nations—with the help of international, anti-American lobbyists—is assaulting American values on a number of fronts, from national security to trade to tax policy to the Internet. Our First Amendment is under attack from UN bureaucrats who are trying to wrest control of the Internet from the United States. Global gun-grabbers have our Second Amendment in their crosshairs as they work toward an international Arms Trade Treaty which will ban the private ownership of firearms. Kilgannon shows how despite President Bush's work, members of America's military are still in jeopardy of being tried before Kofi Annan's International Criminal Court and how Congress has outsourced its constitutional responsibility to the World Trade Organization.

Leading Democrats like Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, John Kerry and others, Kilgannon explains, "have abandoned their faith in America for the empty promises of a global cult...which is hopelessly corrupt, inherently flawed and anti-American to the core." These apostles of universal law have hung our Constitution on the discount rack. For these reasons and more, he argues, "it is time for America to end her love affair with the United Nations."

1 out of 5 stars Who benefits from the UN? The US!.......2007-02-06

The US calls the shots more than any other country in the UN. An international talking shop benefits the leading power in the current international order. Who is that power? The US!

What exactly would Mr. Kilgannon propose to replace the UN as a place for countries to resolve their differences short of war? Or does he enjoy war as much as the current Bush administration used to?

5 out of 5 stars I think the US problem with the UN is a bipartisan one.......2006-10-22

How should the people of a major nation such as the United States regard the United Nations? Well, there are a few possible approaches.

One is that the United Nations is, on the whole, good for everyone. Perhaps if we simply side with it, even its rulings against the United States will tend to improve things for us all, even for us Americans.

Another possibility is that the United Nations is, on the whole, bad for everyone. Perhaps if we simply side with it, its rulings will tend to cause more and more misery for us all, including us Americans.

Yet another possibility is that the truth is somewhere in between, and that on the average, the UN helps the world although it does cost us rich Americans something in order to accomplish that. If that were the case, we'd draw a line somewhere, perhaps with the more conservative Americans refusing to support the UN and the more liberal of us happy to support it.

I think, however, that the second of these possibilities is in fact the proper one. I think the UN is bad for everyone and ought to be outlawed. And while I'm giving this book five stars for exposing some of the problems with the UN, there are a couple of Kilgannon's arguments which I do not especially like.

The author argues that the UN is undermining American sovereignty. But to some extent, it may be a good idea for an international organization to place some restrictions on the sovereignty of individual nations. The real question is whether these restrictions are reasonable and productive or whether they simply risk ceding authority to some tyrants and bullies. This leads to Kilgannon's tendency to blame support for the UN on the Democrats, making the whole issue a partisan one. I do not like that at all; I think the fight against the UN needs to be a bipartisan one.

In addition, the author spends quite a bit of time discussing the extent of corruption at the United Nations. Here again, I think that while some of these scandals demonstrate the untrustworthiness of the UN, the main issue is how a "reformed" and scandal-free UN would perform. And I think that a fully, um, empowered and "reformed" UN could wind up being the most horrifying tyranny the world has yet seen.

On the whole, I agree with Kilgannon when he says that the UN has undermines our security and legitimizes illegitimate regimes. And I think it is indeed bad that the UN is so anti-American. I also agree with the author that we shouldn't "withdraw from the world - only from the United Nations." But I do think our argument ought to be that the UN is bad for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Malignant tumor.......2006-09-22

In Diplomatic Divorce, Kilgannon shows why the UN is inherently flawed and cannot be reformed. It is a failed institution that provides false hope and feeds a bunch of parasites. America should get out of what he calls this global cult with its far reaching tentacles and sinister intentions.

The USA gives the UN and its agencies approximately $3 billion every year, to the unaccountable bureaucrats that work to undermine American interests and constantly demonize Israel. Worse, it is also the meeting place for terrorist cells and a hive of criminal activity. Assisted by the so-called transnational progressives, the UN is assailing the country on many fronts, from trying to usurp control of the Internet to threatening national security and including attempts to impose tax and gun laws.

This study investigates the attempts by United Nations globalists and their leftist enablers of all stripes to usurp American sovereignty. Kilgannon reveals the terrorists, human rights abusers and political deviants that make up the UN General Assembly and shines a light on the incorrigibly corrupt, incompetent, anti-American and anti-Israel bureaucrats of this contemptible organization. The praise singers of the UN include prominent members of the Democratic Party, eccentric billionaires, elements in the mass media and empty-headed celebrities.

In chapter 6: Pistols, Palaces and Petroleum, the Oil For Food scam is covered in detail. Kofi Annan could certainly do business with Saddam as he said, and he did. Moreover, the lucrative trade was spread widely to family members and business associates. The greatest beneficiaries were security council members France and Russia, while the Iraqi people starved. The author also devotes considerable space to the International Criminal Court. Under no circumstances should the USA legitimize this body, as the UN will do everything in its power to criminalize American foreign policy.

The love affair between the leftist elites and the unelected vermin from the darkest crevices of the planet constantly gives birth to more corruption, misery and oppression. Ultimately, the USA cannot continue to reconcile its membership in this body with its sovereignty and founding principles. The UN has gone way beyond being reformable. It is time for America to pull the plug. Despite what the Jimmy Carters and the Bill Clintons might say, withdrawal from the UN would be the right thing to do.

Other books that confirm Kilgannon's revelations include Tower Of Babble by Dore Gold, The UN Gang by Pedro Sanjuan, Inside The Asylum by Jed Babbin, The UN Exposed by Eric Shawn and The Future Of The United Nations by Joshua Muravchik. Not all of these authors advcate complete withdrawal but their work is valuable in getting the complete picture of this profoundly evil institution.

5 out of 5 stars Kilgannon delivers a conservative classic!.......2006-09-09

Tom Kilgannon, along with Ollie North and others, helped show me the difference between being a Republican and a conservative. True to form, Diplomatic Divorce is a brutally honest look at what most globalists don't want Americans to know and most Americans seem blissfully unaware. Writes Kilgannon: "Here at home, they have captured the Democratic Party and are making in-roads in the GOP. They are forcing the United States to answer to a higher earthly authority. From trade to national security to tax policy to the Internet, advocates of universal government want to make the decisions that will chart America's future. In some cases, they already are. Whether we like it or not, we are in a war for America's destiny."

Kilgannon reminds us why he is quickly becoming a rising conservative star in America. Sovereignty is too special to sacrifice at any price, and yet our government has been giving it away at the United Nations. A fine read - a MUST read - for those who think they are ready to have their eyes opened to what really goes on at the United Nations. Kilgannon has written a conservative classic with Diplomatic Divorce, one I guarantee you won't just tuck away on a bookshelf. Kilgannon's latest will be the dog-eared book you keep at your desk as a reference - and as a reminder.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2006-07-04

Thomas Kilgannon is truly one of the leading thinkers on the United Nations. He uses sound research and apt editorializing to present his case why involvement in the United Nations is detrimental to the sovereignty of the United States.

It's scary to think that an organization with as many corrupt bureaucrats as it has, is continually ceded so much power and authority. Thanks for the wake-up call Mr. Kilgannon.
