Book Description
Simplicity finds enormous power in Dan Rhodes's offbeat collection of short (very short) stories. With his award-winning Timoleon Vieta Come Home and chick-lit send-up (under the nom de plume Danuta De Rhodes) The Little White Car, his authorial range became obvious. Now his remarkable collection, Anthropology, only enhanced Rhodes's reputation. Declared one of Granta's Best Young British Novelists in 2003, Rhodes possesses a talent for understated wallops and profound humor, which he devotes to unraveling sex, love, dating, and the confoundingly beautiful, inscrutable girlfriend in these short (but intense) musings.

Cute idea -- wonderful little book!.......2005-10-16
Each 101-word story in this book (there are 101 of them) is a well crafted little masterpiece. A whole story gets told, sometimes with a quirky twist at the end, in 101 words, no more, no less. Most of them have the narrator grieving over a breakup, giving those stories a poignant sweetness. Others are just plain weird, but fun. Some are sad, but funny. All are trippy, about women named Treasure, Skylark, or Miracle. You know, you just have to read this little book for yourself. Your only regret will be that it is so short.
Bitingly hilarious.......2005-07-18
I was intrigued by the polka-dotted book at the library; I was in love by the third page. Dan Rhodes is, quite frankly, amazing. Anthropology can be read over and over again and only gets better.
PS.......2003-04-09
Heck, why SHD I be sorry for you, Dan - you're sitting on a gold mine!
Oh dear.......2003-04-09
Chick-lit for would-be intellectual chicks. Sorry, Dan
Writing.......2003-01-14
I tried for years to write novels. I had plenty of good ideas, but my writing collapsed after just a few chapters. Thinking I was finished, I stumbled on Anthropology by Dan Rhodes, a brilliant collection of 101 stories, each of 101 words. These transcendental mini-dramas inspired me: why spend months on a novel when I could write several stories in a day? I worked joyously on my Rhodesian gems, and before I knew it I had a book. However, although literary agents loved it, they said it was unpublishable, because it had already been done by Dan Rhodes....

La Vie En ROSE -- New cookbook takes recipes from one ofParis's most fashionable restaurants and places it in the eager hands ofhome cooks. It might come as a surprise to some that one of the most trendy andsuccessful bakeries in Paris is run by an Englishwoman. But it shouldn't. With the triumphant success of Rose Bakery in Paris's 9th Arrondissement,Rose Carrarini quickly earned a reputation for creating simple, yetuncompromising foods that focus on the importance of using fresh, flavorfulingredients and a loving attention to detail.Like the Rose Bakery itself,Carrarini's new cookbook BREAKFAST, LUNCH, TEA: The Many Little Meals ofRose Bakery dissolves the distinctions between restaurant cooking and homecooking, and holds firm to the belief that flavor need not be complicated.Carrarini has always believed that simplicity is the key ingredient togreat food and a great life, and it was this philosophy that led her toopen London's influential Villandry in 1988 and Rose Bakery, theAnglo-French restaurant in 2002. Tucked away on a side street near theGare du Nord, Parisians line up daily to sample the lunchtime display ofsalads, tarts, cakes, and light fare at the charming b+-ite.At RoseBakery, it is evident that Love of food has become a universal language. It is this universal language that makes BREAKFAST, LUNCH, TEA pure delightwith recipes from 100 of Rose Bakery's most popular dishes, from breakfaststaples such as Crispy Granola to afternoon treats, including Sticky ToffeePudding and Carrot Cake, as well as soups, risottos and other perfectdishes for a light lunch. In BREAKFAST, LUNCH, TEA simplicity is indeed the golden rule, from therecipes and techniques to the structure of the cookbook itself. The bookbegins with a chapter on techniques and ingredients, with thoughts andadvice on such matters as peeling, oven temperatures, and moisture, anddescriptions and tips for such ingredients as olive oil, butter, vanilla, and marigold. Then Carrarini moves straight into Breakfast, providingdozens of simple and delicious recipes, including Fresh Mixed Fruit Salad,Lime Grapefruit and Ginger Juice, Honey Granola, Traditional Porridge,Perfect Scrambled Eggs, Ricotta Pancakes, and Blueberry Scones. Lunchbegins with numerous soups, salads, pastries, and risottos, and thenprovides main courses that range from Asparagus and Almond Salad withChicken to Braised Lamb Shank with Cumin, Aubergine and Chickpeas.BREAKFAST, LUNCH, TEA saves the best for last. The Tea chapter featuresmore than fifty of the tarts, cakes, cookies, tray bakes, and puddings thathave made Rose Bakery world famous and locally adored, including LemonBlueberry Tart, Fresh Ginger Cake, Pine Nut and Almond Biscuits, HazelnutBrownies, Apple and Blackberry Crumble, and Apricot Sorbet, just to name afew.More than 100 specially commissioned photographs from acclaimedphotographer Toby Glanville make BREAKFAST, LUNCH, TEA a visually richcookbook, allowing each recipe to seduce the senses from the very firstread. These pictures are populated with the food, people, and shopatmosphere that make Rose Bakery so special.

A Feast ForThe Senses.......2007-05-21
This is a delightful book that operates on a number of levels. First the exquisite photographs capture the beauty of the mundane doings of the Rose Bakery. From the simplicity of a zested lemon to the ruddy faces of the apple suppliers to the delivery truck to the ooh so chic clientèle, the pictures transport the reader to this Paris cafe.
Then there is the author's story, a tale of a woman who loves food and people. With no formal training and a belief in natural, fresh and unpretentious dishes, Rose Carranini built the wildly successful business. Her sense of purpose and commitment to quality and sustainability is impressive and her affection for her patrons is palpable.
Finally, the recipes themselves are superb. Basically, there are two types of people: those who follow recipes to a tee and those who view recipes as a guide or starting point for their own creativity. The author advocates the flexible approach. She encourages the cooks to use their favorite ingredients and substitutions, cautioning that it is the method as opposed to the ingredients that is crucial to the ultimate success of the recipe. She correctly points out that cookie cutter results are impossible when using natural ingredients...the juiciness of a piece of fruit, the humidity, the weather, the rainfall or lack thereof, the temperature of the room all impact the final result. The amateur cook should not be deterred. While some of the recipes are a bit labor intensive, they all are fairly easy. Additionally there are plenty for vegans and vegetarians.
The author embodies the joy of cooking. Food should be fun not fake. Her secrets are all revealed...always buy fresh, seasonal and local; use organic and sustainable when possible and remember the most important ingredient is love.
A Wonderfully Quirky Cookbook.......2007-03-02
What a charming and wonderful book this is! From the lemon, rice and polenta cake to the Pistachio cake using a bit of wheat flour and ground almonds and pistachios, to the Eccles Cakes (cookies that use pie dough as cases) filled with raisins, spices, lemon zest and brown sugar to the lamb shank with cumin, eggplant and chickpeas, it's all wonderful. I've tried several other recipes, and, although I've only had this book for a few months, it's covered with smudges and bent pages.
I love this book!

Masterpiece of small meals.......2006-12-03
I noticed the book Breakfast, Lunch, Tea by Rose Carrarini being mentioned in the Lifestyle magazine that came with Sunday The New York Times newspaper. The idea of little meals caught my eye. Over the years I have handpicked cookbooks into my small collection, but I'm constantly on the market for something that I might like or might not have imagined. The latter appeared in the form of this book. I ordered the book, opened it on a random page and - it took my breath away, literally, with its structure, beauty (needless to say - Phaidon press)and a promise of finer things, food included. I opened it on a back flap, which quoted Rose Carrarini saying "Life can be improved by great food." Oh yes - they are my kind of people! The Carrarinis prefer and prepare their food simple and natural, preferably, but not necessarily organic. They put vegetables above meat or fish with ambition to blur the line between home and restaurant cooking; they have put together menus, and based on them, a cookbook that is too filled even to be read in many sittings. Rather, it is to be enjoyed by tiny morsels that make your lunch, snack or day. A thousand thanks for this masterpiece!

The Admirable Crichton and What Every Woman Knows are shrewd and entertaining contributions to the politics of class and gender, while Mary Rose is one of the best ghost stories written for the stage.

Book Description
States of Fantasy is Jacqueline Rose's much-praised contribution to the current controversy over the limits of English Studies. Arguing for an expansion of the new boundaries of `English', and for the importance of psychoanalysis to the understanding of our literary and historical lives, Rose looks at Israel/Palestine and South Africa, and their place in the English literary and cultural imagination. Jacqueline Rose's fundamental question is the place of fantasy in public and private identities, and in these pages she pushes her investigation further into what might at first glance seem unlikely places. In September 1993, Israel and the PLO signed their first peace treaty; in April 1994, South Africa held its first non-racial democratic elections. States of Fantasy persuasively puts the case that nowhere demonstrates more clearly than these two arenas of historic conflict the need for a psychoanalytically informed understanding of historical process. In so doing, this book shows how the place of England and its writing in those histories emphasize the unbreakable line that runs between literature and politics. Stretching the limits of the `canon' debate, the author offers the strongest rebuttal to critics who try to sever the links between the study of literature and culture and the making and unmaking of the modern world. The central part of this wide-ranging and lively study was originally delivered as the 1994 Clarendon Lectures in Oxford.

Book Description
It began with a letter....that leads to a passion and adventure beyond her dreams...."I have taken measures to hide Mary's rose chalice....I fear that all in the castle may die for hiding it, but it is our duty to protect this sacred emblem of Scotland."-Letter written in 1651Taylor Kincaid hosts a top-rated television series that debunks everything supernatural. So when she finds herself on the Scottish coast-- to claim an out-of-the-blue inheritance and ancient letters telling of royal gold-- she's prepared to explode the local legend: an archway made of stone through which young women disappear. Until a stormy sea sweeps her through the Ladysgate-- and with her, handsome, rugged sea captain Duncan Fraser.Beyond it lies the Scotland of 1651. It is the land of Taylor's heirloom letters and Mary Queen of Scots' fabled jeweled chalice, The Scottish Rose, emblem of peace. Together Taylor and Duncan must search for it amid the passions and perils of history....or, in a desperate bid to recross the centuries, risk losing each other and the love they've found beyond the gates of time.

Enjoyable Historical Novel.......2006-03-21
I enjoyed The Scottish Rose as much as Jill Jones' other historical novels. I recommend it to you.
Hilarious trashy historical romance novel.......2005-05-20
I read these kinds of books purely for their trashy entertainment value, and boy was this ever entertaining!
The book has some genuinely good points - it's an intriguing plot including time-travel and magic and a sweet sort of love story. It's also an interesting account of history and (living in the part of Scotland where this book takes place, at the moment) it does a good job of evoking the atmosphere of the Scottish Northeast's surroundings.
But it's also completely cheesy and unbelievable....it was great! Typical of all these sorts of books, the heroine is spunky to the point of annoyance and laboring under her own weird psychological issues the whooooole way through the book till you want to slap her silly and make her snap out of it already. There's nothing terribly special about the characters - it's a trashy romance novel, she's a pretty but headstrong ditz, who's always getting herself into a bind and then relies on her beefcake of a love interest to save her, only to snap at him for thinking she's "weak".........
Oh dear. It's hokey, but it's a great ride, and I read the thing in one night. Couldn't put it down. So although I reserve 5 stars for Nobel-prize sort of writing, for its genre, The Scottish Rose is a fun, atmospheric, page-turning romp.
What a waste of time!.......2005-02-15
This book was awful. My standards are pretty high after reading Diana Gabaldon's series. The characters were two-dimensional and I had a hard time even caring about what happened to them. The plot was predictable and boring. What a waste of time!!
Thrilling and Romantic.......2003-01-10
I agree w/ the reviewer who thinks this novel deserves to be a film. The writing was rich, the plot was exciting, and the love story was romantic. This is one of the best time-travel novels I have read--fantastic, yet realistic. Very enjoyable.
In the Defense of a Tragic Queen.......2001-08-01
What a job well done by an emerging new writer! Jill Jones not only captivated thousands of avid readers just like me but also provided a very interesting tapestry of a time when Scotland is besieged by the Puritan leader, Oliver Cromwell. Miss Jones actually "turned back the hands of time" when she showed the readers how is it like to live in a world chiefly governed by ignorance. Imagine a boy of ten such as Pauley who don't even know how to speak accused of being the "bairn" of a witch, and modern-day thrill seekers being transported back in time through the Ladysgate burned alive! What a nice place to be! But most of all, aside from the "timeless fairy-tale love stroy" of Duncan and Taylor (Mrs. Janet Fraser), lies a "truth" somewhat rejected by almost everyone reading the pages of history: the innocence of Mary, Queen of Scots. The story is not much about Greta's stupidity, Robert Gordon's "thievery", the Ogilvies' loyalty, and Lady Keith's long lost relative but rather on how history for so long looked down on a woman who's purely a victim of treachery and odd circumstances sorrounding her tragic life. "Queen Mary is innocent!", that is the message of the fabled chalice. A must-read book of a very talented writer!

HAROLD NICOLSON : A FULL LIFE.......2007-10-04
When I got to then end of this biography, I thought to myself `What a great life!'. Harold was the son of Sir Arthur Nicolson who ended his own distinguished career in the diplomatic service as the UK's Permanent Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs and entered the peerage on his retirement. Harold would never stick to one career and never match his father. He left Baliol, Oxford University with a 3rd Class degree; this outcome was reflected in Harold's professional life. He had entry to every career he ever wanted but would never wholly commit himself or succeed to the highest level as his father did. But what careers he had. He was a gifted diplomatist and played an important supportive role at the Conference at Versailles producing one superb memorandum after another on the carve up of Europe after WW1. Many of his recommendations were accepted and it was only the streak of arrogance that ran through him that, ultimately, made it difficult for him to get beyond the grade of Counsellor.
He resigned from diplomacy to become a journalist, MP, broadcaster and amazingly prolific author (including his classic book `Diplomacy' which, I know, is still read by young keen diplomatists), and, of course, creator with his wife Vita Sackville-West, of Sissinghurt's gardens (incidentally Sissinghurst was owned 100% by Vita). His political career was rather lacklustre; he joined Oswald Mosley's ill fated New Party basically because he could and it would give him the best chance of entering Parliament. He did become an MP but he wasn't tough enough or competitive or even interested enough for a career in politics. His biography gives us an excellent inside view of Versailles; Harold remembered the conference as chaotic and disappointing but readers are reminded that his wife was conducting her most dangerous affair at this time* and Harold was dealing with that too. It also gives great insights into the British political scene leading up to WW2 and though to the 1950s.
Harold's downside is his strong sense of elitism and his vociferous, even for the times, racism. I found him obnoxious at times and degraded by the revelations. He was capable of strong dislikes and radical leftist Phillip Toynbee, a close friend of his son Ben, appears to have been his bête noire. But primarily, amongst his friends and peers, Harold was a gentle, compassionate, well liked man who loved his life. I like the way he took advantage of the silver spoon life gave him and lived his life to the full. I am amazed by his productivity. At the end of his life he had no regrets and specifically said he was glad he had left his diplomatic life behind. His only regret was that his beloved wife, Vita, was no longer with him; her death broke his own will to live.
I first got to know about Harold Nicolson through his son Nigel's `Portrait of a Marriage' which brought into the public domain the open nature of his parent's marriage and the homosexuality of both. One of the main benefits of the openness and the separateness of their lives (Harold was in London on week-days) must have been that it allowed both Harold and Vita to lead incredibly productive professional lives. Their extra-marital affairs appear to have been secondary (apart from Vita's early affair with Violet Trefusis*). Harold's eldest son, Ben, wrote to Phillip Toynbee as late as September 1968 (Harold died in May), `What is ironical is that neither of them will live in history except as creators of Sissinghurst and for the Diaries [Harold's - they have never been out of print].' That, frankly, could have been good enough but when Nigel published his book in 1973 he made his parents world famous. This biography is recommended but beware that a lot of it reads like a political history book.

Lovely Book of Poetry!.......2006-06-03
I have long been a Yeats fan but I found this small (120 pages) hard-back book very interesting and beautiful. The first 25 pages or so is an introduction to the life of Yeats, explaining when, why and for whom he wrote his love poetry. Yeats is a very complex and often misunderstood poet but this book is a great way to begin understanding his life and works. After the introduction, each section of the book that follows begins with an explantion of the years the poems were written, the inspiration for the poems, and any symbolism within said poems.
I highly recommend this book and feel sure you will enjoy it as much as I did.
Great Introduction.......2000-09-06
This is a very fine introduction to the life and love poetry of W.B. Yeats. The book begins with an extensive, 25 page biography of Yeats that includes even his distressful discovery of masturbation at age 15, his hidden love for his distant cousin Laura Armstrong, and his frustrated love for Maud Gonne, the major character of his love poems. He proposed marriage to the cold-but-beautiful and very politically minded Maud, who refused him and married a soldier. The introduction gives examples of how this most important relationship was reflected in Yeats' poems. Yeats first sexual love was with Olivia Shakespear (while estranged from her husband) and was a brief affair. The end of this episode intensified his loss of Maud Gonne and intensified the passion in his poems also. After Maude's separation from her soldier husband, Yeats proposed again to Maude, was refused again, and then he did the creepy thing of asking Maude to allow him to marry her daughter Isuelt! At age 52 he married the 26 year old Georgie Hyde Lees, whom he called "George," and had a daughter and a son. Yeats exploration of Irish folklore under the guidance of Lady Gregory, and his exploration of mysticism with Georgie are also included in this focussed introduction. The 48 short poems published here are lovely, touching, and often sad, but have beautifully sculpted lines. For example,(on pg.31)"She laid them upon her bosom, Under a cloud of her hair, And her red lips sang them a love-song, Till stars grew out of the air." Illuminating notes (34 pages) are in the back of the book. The best way to read this book is first to read the introduction, secondly read each poem followed by the notes on each poem, and finally to reread the poem if you want to catch the subtleties.
A good handbook for students and general readers.......2000-06-03
Professor Norman Jeffares is an authority on Irish literature. He has lectured in Trinity College, Dublin and written and edited the works of many Irish writers, including Joyce, Yeats, Swift, Farquhar, Goldsmith to name a few. He has written two biographies of W. B. Yeats. In this collection, Norman Jeffares displays the depth and complexity of Yeats' romantic poetry and how they have progressed over the years.
It is well known that Yeats led a movement that stimulated new understanding of Irish literature and nationalism in the late 1800s and early 20th centaury. Here, Jeffares focuses his attention on the contribution Yeats made towards romantic poetry.
The book contains a useful introduction containing Yeats' biographical notes with important events and people who influenced his work.
The poems in this anthology are presented in chronological order and categorised under three headings: romantic idealism (early poems); romantic realism (poems written over the next 15 years); and complex harmonies (poems inspired by his wife).
This anthology is a good handbook for students and general readers interested in Yeats' romantic poetry.
