4 out of 5 stars Oh what tangled webs we weave.......2007-06-14

Oh what tangled webs we weave
When first we practice to deceive.
And when we've practiced for awhile,
How we do improve our style!

This quote from Sir Walter Scott is so appropriate for describing this book, in many ways.

This is an interesting book, sort of an historical thriller. Megan Chance paints a suffocating portrait of life for society women at the turn of the century.

Lucy Carelton has been lucky enough to marry for love but she is unsatisfied in her marriage and her life. She's prone to fits and hysterics and suffers from headaches. She and her husband have tried unsuccessfully to have a child and they have sought care from many doctors over the years, none have been successful in helping her.

A mysterious neurologist, Vincent Seth arrives in New York practicing a new form of therapy, hypnosis. Lucy seeks out his help and becomes his patient, finding some relief from her maladies. But we quickly begin to question his motives in his treatment of her. Is he trying to help her? Or does he have only his own interests in mind?

I really enjoyed the commentary on life for women at the turn of the century. (I never would have survived it.) The relationships between Lucy and her husband and her father were realistic and oppressive. There were interesting and unexpected twists and turns and I found this to be a very enjoyable read.

This novel reminded me of City of Light by Lauren Belfer. Which is set in the same time period and addressed some similar issues. If you liked that you might like this and vice versa.

4 out of 5 stars intriguing.......2007-06-09

Once this book "sunk in", I loved it. There were a lot of discussion points for our women's book club. One member wanted to know if "electro-therapy" was covered under an HMO. (You'll get it once you read the book!)

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining Tale of one Victorian Woman's Escape from Repression.......2007-03-25

Lucy Carrolton, a Victorian wife suffering from "hysteria". In actuality she was just a normal woman whose normal feelings had been repressed since childhood. She never dealt with witnessing her mother's death and her father, fearing his daughter would leave him, too, treated her like she was a precious piece of china as opposed to a human being. Anything she did to release or express her feelings -- drawing, turning to religion, etc. was deemed to be a sign of something wrong with her. When she married William, it continued until she was literally hysterical (who wouldn't be). Doctor after doctor treated her to no positive result -- of course they had no clue back then. The discourses in the dialogue on the differences in brain power between the rich and poor, men and women, etc. were amusing when taken from 21st century perspective. At any rate, ultimately she finds a doctor who helps her to at first her husbands delight, but ultimately his dismay as she becomes "inconvenient" as the title suggests. Without spoiling the story for other readers, suffice it to say, Lucy ultimately finds a way to become the woman she truly is inside and frees herself from the emotional repression heaped upon her by the times, by her father and ultimately her husband as well.

4 out of 5 stars Horrors of being a female in Victorian society--.......2006-12-31

I read this book in less then a day, not because it was a simple book to read but because it grabbed my attention from the start and I could not put it down.
The story of Lucy Carleton is both intriguing and tragic. The author does an excellent job of describing the period and setting of this story. It had me thinking over and over again, "Thank goodness for the arrival of the women's sufferage movement." It is an eyeopener into the Victorian time, its' grandeur and abuses.

5 out of 5 stars We've come a long way baby.......2006-08-30

Thank heavens things have changed for women since the early 1990's.

This book was wonderful. I chose it for my book club choice last month and the ladies just raved about it, many of them stating this was their favorite book since the conception of our book club, 4 years ago. This has mystery, history and a little hot romance.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Seven Corinthian series by late Patricia Oliver.........2002-09-09

This book was one of the earlier books that I read in this series (not well known to most Regency romance readers) by the late Patricia Oliver who died recently. I started out with Roses for Harriet (an earlier book chronologically and in publication oder) at least three years back when I had just begun to read Signet regency romances. Recently I re-read this book along with Roses for Harriet, and The Colonel's Lady.

This review places the book in context of the series, rather than providing an opinion of the book per se.

The Seven Corinthians are a group of wealthy gentlemen who are interested in fast horses, in gambling and other male aristocratic amusements, in pretty and fast women, and also in athletic pursuits. I am not sure that I have an exact list of who is one of the Seven, but here is a tentative list - firstly, Robert [Heathercott], Marquess of Gresham [who plays a significant part in The Colonel's Lady, and whose own romance is in Lord Gresham's Lady]; secondly, [Robert Stilton] the Marquess of Monroyal [who plays a significant part in An Immodest Proposal and a minor part in some other books, and whose own marriage is set in this book - An Inconvenient Wife - set in 1817]; thirdly, the Honourable Willoughby "Willy" Hampton [who never managed to get his love before the author died, alas!]; fourthly, his brother Major Jack Hampton [whose story is told, I believe, in The Runaway Duchess, which I have not read]; fifthly, [Giles Montague] the Earl of Kimbalton [whose story is told in Roses for Harriet, and who appears at the beginning of this book]; sixthly, [Phineas Ravensville] the Earl of Mansfield or "Raven" [whose story appears in Miss Drayton's Downfall, and who also appears at the beginning of this book]; and seventh and last, the Duke of Wolverton whose story is told in another book An Unsuitable Match. Other books - The Colonel's Lady tells the story of Lord Gresham's only sister Lady Regina Heathercott, and An Immodest Proposal the story of Lord Monroyal's step-cousin the Dowager Viscountess Lonsdale (called here Lady Cynthia Lonsdale).

I have written down the names of the heroes as they should appear, since in reality, peers were not known by their first name, family name and title (although courtesy peers were styled by their first name and courtesy title hence Robert, Marquess of Gresham). One of the things I noticed in beginning a re-read of Patricia Oliver's Seven Corinthian series (and the two related books) is that her books are far more appealing when the reader knows relatively little about the social conventions (let alone proper styles of the peers and courtesy peers). On a re-read, I found myself questioning elements of her plots, and judging both her heroes and heroines far more harshly.

I will comment on the book in a separate review. As far as I can tell, AN INCONVENIENT WIFE is perhaps the last in the Seven Corinthian series (the last that is, that ends with one of them married). For lovers of Patricia Oliver, this is one reason alone to keep this book. I confess to a weakness for the series myself, even though I find the plots rather unlikely today.

5 out of 5 stars Caught in a trap of his own making!.......2000-04-30

When Robert Monroyal, depressed at seeing so many of his close friends - all once rakehells like himself - now married, bets ten thousand pounds that he will never marry, he never imagines that scarcely a couple of weeks later he will find himself forced to marry a woman he barely knows, the daughter of a man he despises, who hates his guts and whom he believes to have trapped him. And yet from these inauspicious beginnings....

Robert Monroyal first appeared as the cynical, sneering friend of Guy Hawkhurst in An Unsuitable Match, and very much merited a book of his own. And Oliver did him proud! He's not, of course, quite the arrogant, cruel man he appears to be, but he is seriously troubled and in need of a good woman. However, he certainly doesn't intend that Pamela should have any role in his life. Instead, he sends her away to his country estates, planning never to visit her.

However, he reckons without his siblings, his step-mother and even Pamela herself.

A great read!

4 out of 5 stars Well worth reading - a further instalment in Oliver's series.......1999-08-03

As a stand-alone book, this is an enjoyable tale of a cynical, embittered rake who has vowed never to marry, and the marriage he finds himself forced to make as a result of being caught _in flagrante_ with the wrong lady.

As another episode in Oliver's Seven Corinthians linked books, it is even more worth the purchase. The Marquess of Monroyal first appeared as an intriguing and in some ways likeable figure in 'An Unsuitable Match,' and it is good to see him getting his own story. Monroyal, Hawkhurst and the other two men in 'An Unsuitable Match' were new characters in the series; none of these had appeared in Oliver's previous books, though earlier characters reappear in both 'Unsuitable Match' and 'Inconvenient Wife.'

What puzzles me about Monroyal, however, is that at the start of this book there is reference to his feelings for the Countess of Mansfield, and his attempt to run off to Paris with her. However, as readers of 'Miss Drayton's Downfall' and 'Lord Gresham's Lady' will be aware, the person who offered to run off with Cassandra Mansfield was the Marquess of Gresham. It's unclear, therefore, whether Oliver got her characters mixed up and hadn't realised that she had given Monroyal the same 'back-story', or whether she liked Lord Gresham so much that she decided to duplicate him in Monroyal.

Still, regardless of that, this is a book you'll want to read again, particularly in conjunction with the others in the series.

I can't tell whether Oliver has continued this series since; this appears to be the most recent I can find, but there are other characters who have not yet had their own stories, most noticeably 'Sweet Willy' Hampton. Anyone know?

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining and enjoyable read........1998-06-15

I'd rate this book in the top 20% of American-authered Regencies I've read - in general American Regency romances are not as authentic and lack the attention to detail of contemporary British-authored Regencies. However, Patricia Oliver appears to be a more conscientious writer than most and this particular book was amusing, entertaining and kept me interested until the end. I'd certainly recommend it.

Ramon is the next man on her father's hit-list. But this time, Estrella finds a man who ignites her passions. But old scandals interfere and Ramon doesn't even ask her to explain. Yes, yet another man rips at her heart. How can she ever trust him again?

5 out of 5 stars The Scarlet Woman.......2005-10-11

Back Cover - Ramón Dario desperately wants the Medrano Company. But the deal has an outrageous condition - marriage to the notorious Estrella Medrano! Ramón won't be forced into anything, least of all a wedding with a scarlet woman!

But Estrella is not what he thought. Ramón can't get her gorgeous body out of his mind. He even starts to believe she may not deserve her reputation! A marriage of convenience - and desire - might be a good deal after all....

My review - Estrella is in the unenviable position of having one man after another bribed by her father to marry her - she has the task of convincing them she doesn't want to wed them - each time her father puts more pressure on her. Ramon is the tenth man he tries to bribe. Passion flares between them, but Ramon treats Estrella with contempt because he, like everyone else, has heard the story of how she stole an older man away from his wife and children & ran off with him. The man died a week later in a car accident, but Estrella has not been able to escape the scandal or her fathers censure. No one has ever asked to hear her side of the story, and it appears that Ramon is no different.

Estrella visits Ramon and passion flares out of control - she offers to marry him so he can get the tv station and she can get her father off her back - she tells him that they can divorce later. They end up on bed making love all night. In the morning, Ramon surprises her by telling her that he still isn't interested in wedding a woman like her. She leaves his house heartbroken - feeling cheap.

Ramon cannot get her out of his mind, he thinks about her and their night together constantly until he can't take it anymore and decides to visit her. He ends up dropping in a dinner party with her, her father, and bachelor number eleven - an old, fat, short man with a good reputation who Estrella's father has told her she will have to marry or be cast out into the street. Ramon takes the scene in and understands whats going on - he sees the shadows under Estrella's eyes and how miserable she is and he impulsively announces to her father that they are going to marry & that he asked her to keep it a secret until they could tell him together.

SPOILER AHEAD - They marry, they make mad passionate love & both come to feel a lot more than lust for each other, but suspect that their love is in vain. Estrella shows Ramon a marriage certificate from years ago - the man who turned her into a scarlet woman pretended he was single and committed bigamy to fake marry her and get her into bed. He is devastated to learn that he misjudged her so badly - it is a great read. My favorite part is when Estrella comes down the aisle in a red wedding gown - she has guts!

5 out of 5 stars Emotional, volatile, passionate, an incredible love story!.......2005-05-02

Just when I didn't believe this second book in the Alcolar Family series could live up to the first, I was proven wrong. Kate Walker is an unbelievable storyteller. She weaves such passion and interest into her storyline and characters as they come to life.

This is Ramon and Estella's story. Ramon is a sexy, strong and sensitive Spanish alpha, one who believes he is not capable of falling in love or in the happy ever after, not until he meets the beautiful Estella. Estella is being sold off to the highest bidder in order to save the family reputation. Estella is very warm, soft, sexy and sensitive.

Ramon meets Estella at her family home where he has a meeting with her father to purchase a TV station. However, there is a glitch when her father wants her married as part of the deal to save the family name from a past scandal. Ramon wants the TV station, the only thing that would truly be his, not something belonging to his past or present family ties.
Personally, I fell in love with Ramon's character; He's strong, sexy, sensitive, intelligent, and daring, the perfect alpha male. Kate has an incredible way of describing Ramon from his background, to his present role in the Alcolar family, business and his feelings and intentions where Estella is concerned. Estella has been accused of being a "fallen woman" by high society. She is warm, sensitive and a real spitfire. When Ramon and Estella are put together, sparks begin to form and fly. This very high paced love story continues with a marriage of convenience and both realize that this mutual attraction is something more.

Once I began to read this wonderful love story, I couldn't put it down. I also encourage you to read "The Twelve-Month Mistress", the first in the series. If you get to know the Alcolar's, you won't be sorry, I promise.

There's simply not enough passion, romance, or excitement, even, in this story. Also, and this may be quite irrational, but i just didn't like the names of the characters--very weak and unremarkable.

The presence of the secondary fairy characters also seemed more of a nuisance. Halfway on the book i wanted it to end already and be done with it. I felt that i have wasted my time with this...

5 out of 5 stars truly an amazing read for somone so young!.......2003-01-10

I am only 19 years old and I do read a bit of adult fiction but to be completly honest this was my very first romance novel. and I abslutly loved it. I loved it that it had historical facts and the faries and the little hints of scottish fantasy was very nice. mostly because even though there were hints of this in the story which I love because I have always been a huge fan of fantasy novels really in any fourm what so ever. but this still had added interest that kept in very realistic and did not make the story stray to far from the plot line. the romance was always great because it consited all the way thorough the novel all the way from when molly and fin first meet and to the very end of the book. this indeed was the fact that made me not so suprised that I had read such a large scale novel in such a short amount of time. seeing is how it had so much to ofer that was so interesting and would draw a reader couristey very easily. so even though I am very new to the romance novels of the amazing amanda scott I hope to read more of work namly Border Bride, The Secret Clan: Hidden Heiress, The Secret Clan Highland Bride, and The Kid Napped Bride.
and I would diffenly recomend this book to anyone who shows a soft spot for romance novels or stories.

4 out of 5 stars Ms. Scott is a lass who knows how to spin a fine tale!.......2002-03-05

Molly Gordon is naught but a frightened child when she's forced from her bed in the wee dead of night. Her papa, a braw man if ever there was one, has been killed by a common reiver, you see, and her Uncle Angus is wasting no time in claiming Molly as his ward. A veritable fortune is in want, after all. As the Maid of Dunsithe, Molly -- and subsequently, her baby sister, Bess -- are the keys to unlocking the riches said to be found on Gordon land. Her Uncle, leaving naught to chance, takes both girls from their mother. Lady Eleanor is likewise determined to avoid any chicanery, however...

A dozen years later, Molly has endured a change of wardship thrice as Jamie, High King of Scots, awards a writ of wardship to whomever he pleases... King Jamie has granted Sir Finlay Mackenzie -- Wild Fin, if'n you please -- a writ. The Maid of Dunsithe (and her ever elusive fortune) is now Fin's to do with as he pleases...

Fin is ill-prepared for his reaction to Molly, however. Beautiful and stubbornly imperious, Mistress Gordon is the veriest temptation. Indeed, she almost makes Fin forget about Dunsithe's treasure and his bloodlust for Donald the Grim. Almost. The wee folk are also at work as Fin and Molly come to a shaky understanding. Donald the Grim will stop at naught to achieve his objectives, and Molly is heartily sore of being ill-used as men play their greedy power games. Will an Abducted Heiress, longing for a home, willingly surrender her secrets to a man who's slowly but surely stealing her heart?

Impeccably researched (or so it would seem to this reviewer), Abducted Heiress is an historical romance that relies heavily upon historical fact -- with a wee bit of artistic license and yes, fey-inventiveness, taken. Ms. Scott has done a remarkable job bringing the Scottish Highlands -- and the sixteenth century -- to life. I all but lived and breathed Molly and Fin's story. Artfully crafted with a daunting authenticity, Abducted Heiress will sweep you away. I was especially impressed by Ms. Scott's ability to include the wee folk in a seemingly believable manner. Indeed, they helped to progress the plot while adding a few twists and turns into the bargain!

At any rate, Molly and Fin are strong characters with believable faults and flaws. (I only raised an eyebrow once at Molly's convoluted thinking, and hence, her ridiculously prideful actions). Their relationship is beautifully developed at a slow but steady pace. The romantic tension is present throughout; it's their emotional bond readers will savor the most as it develops. Most importantly, Abducted Heiress has the unusual distinction of being a novel in a series that nonetheless feels complete when you reach the last page. That's to say, I felt fulfilled, satisfied, pleased to reach the end with no lingering questions and/or concerns. (Well, no lingering questions that the sequel won't answer: they're entirely independent from Molly and Fin's story, though). Indeed, I'm already itching to read Ms. Scott's next offering in "The Secret Clan" series.

It's a certainty; Ms. Scott is a lass who knows how to spin a fine tale! Dinnae believe me? Pick up a copy of Abducted Heiress and let Molly, Fin and the wee folk convince you...

                4 out of 5 stars a fun-filled Highland romance.......2001-12-11

Two very young sisters were taken away from their home. One received a secret clue, from their mother, to remember her birthright and her clan.

Molly Gordon was the infamous Maid of Dunsithe, rumored to have the largest fortune in all of Scotland. Unfortunately, no one has seen it since Molly was taken from her home in the dead of night. That doesn't stop people from looking for it, or to continue passing her around from foster family to foster family, like chattel. She longs for a place to call home, and she is fed up with people only wanting her for her supposed treasure. Then one night she meets a man called Wild Fin, and everything changes.

Sir Finlay MacKenzie has been granted Molly as his ward, given to him by the King of Scotland himself. Fin goes to collect her from her present residence, the keep of Laird MacKinnon, only to find an attempt to thwart him from his business with claims Molly is not there. As Fin and his men are leaving, he is thrown from his horse, at the same time he spies a young women hiding in the forest.

Molly takes an instant dislike to Fin, from the moment he mistakes her for a common maid to be trifled with, and she is infuriated to discover he is her new guardian. She chafes at his commands and shows rebellion at every turn. Then he has the nerve to try to force her to marry him, upon finding out Molly's previous guardian, Donald of Sleat, has not taken the news of her transfer of guardianship kindly. She does finally agree to marry Fin, grudgingly, hoping she has finally found a home.

However, adventure and danger await, finding Fin travelling all over the Highlands to fight Donald. Donald wants the fortune of Dunsithe, but doesn't stop there. He wants the throne as well. Will Fin and Molly defeat Donald and find the magical treasure... and love they are destined for?

This was a captivating read. The characters were vividly drawn and full of personality. Add in a few of the Fair Folk and it becomes a magical adventure. There is plenty of mystery as well, with the cast trying to solve the puzzle of the hidden riches. One will be drawn in to the story from page one and will stay absorbed through to the end.

Also of note, is how well Ms. Scott sets up the story of Bess, Molly's missing sister, believed dead. Her story will be told in the sequel The Secret Clan: The Hidden Heiress, to be released in 2002. The Abducted Heiress doesn't really end, but gives the reader a "to be continued" feel, without leaving the feeling Fin and Molly's story is incomplete. This reviewer will be awaiting the sequel, and a chance to revisit some very enchanting characters.

5 out of 5 stars This author writes some of the best historical romances.......2001-10-25

In 1527, the Earl of Angus arrives to take his five year old niece Molly Gordon, the Maid of Dunsithe and her infant sister Bessie away from their home. The little girls have no protector as their father just died and their mother is helpless to stop her brother, who plans to control the wealth of Molly, an heiress. Before being separated from her two children, Molly's mother uses a heated ring to burn a mark onto her daughter's chest so she can recognize her if they ever meet as adults.

Twelve years later, Sir Finlay "Wild Fin" Mackenzie comes to the Isle of Skye to take his king chosen betrothed/ward Molly away with him. Fin has two reasons to marry Molly. His people can use her legendary riches though no one knows where they might be and he wants to enact revenge on her previous guardian Donald of Sleat who killed his father. As the wee people interfere, Fin and Molly are attracted to one another, but dangerous enemies want Molly and Fin dead rather than united in love.

ABDUCTED HEIRESS, the first part of a two part miniseries, The Secret Clan, is an engaging paranormal historical romantic suspense. The story line is filled with the danger of intrigue blended with the magic of the wee people. The lead characters are a delightfully dueling duet and the audience will enjoy their capers, but the novel works on several levels because fans will believe in Amanda Scott's "world" and want Bessie's story told soonest, not next year.
