Book Description

Vastly entertaining and outright hilarious, Paul Murray’s debut heralds the arrival of a major new Irish talent. His protagonist is endearing and wildly witty–part P. G. Wodehouse’s Bertie Wooster, with a cantankerous dash of A Confederacy of Dunces’ Ignatius J. Reilly thrown in. With its rollicking plot and colorful characters, An Evening of Long Goodbyes is a delightful and erudite comedy of epic proportions.

Charles Hythloday observes the world from the comfortable confines of Amaurot, his family estate, and doesn’t much care for what he sees. He prefers the black-and-white sanctum of classic cinema–especially anything starring the beautiful Gene Tierney–to the roiling and rumbling of twenty-first-century Dublin. At twenty-four, Charles aims to resurrect the lost lifestyle of the aristocratic country gentleman–contemplative walks, an ever-replenished drink, and afternoons filled with canapés as prepared by the Bosnian housekeeper, Mrs. P.

But Charles’s cozy existence is about to face a serious shake-up. His sister, Bel, an aspiring actress and hopeless romantic, has brought to Amaurot her most recent–and to Charles’s mind, most ill-advised–boyfriend. Frank is hulking and round, and resembles nothing so much as a large dresser, probably a Swedish one. He bets on greyhounds and talks endlessly of brawls and pubs in an accent that brings tears to Charles’s eyes. And, most suspiciously, his entrance into the Hythlodays’ lives just happens to coincide with the disappearance of an ever-increasing number of household antiques and baubles.

Soon, Charles and Bel discover that missing heirlooms are the least of their worries; they are simply not as rich as they have always believed. With the family fortune teetering in the balance, Charles must do something he swore he would never do: get a job. Booted into the mean streets of Dublin, he is as unprepared for real life as Frank would be for a cotillion. And it turns out that real life is a tad unprepared for Charles, as well.

4 out of 5 stars An author to watch.......2007-03-01

Not the comic masterpiece it is advertised to be, AELG is nevertheless an accomplished and enjoyable first novel. The premise is that Charles Hythloday, son of an (erstwhile) well-to-do Irish family, has decided that he is not cut out for work of any kind and has dedicated himself to reviving the dying job title of aristocratic country gentleman. Modern times being what they are, however, the Hythloday family has fallen on hard times and Charles finds that he must get a dreaded job. If this were a Wodehousian novel (as advertised), hilarity would ensue, involving bizarre complications and amusing misunderstandings. If this were an unimaginative novel, Charles would struggle through a few jobs before settling down in one, discovering along the way what he's been missing in the rarified world of the estate, gaining in self-esteem, realizing the inherent nobility of the working classes, and experiencing the transformative, even redemptive powers of good, honest work.

This is not that novel. Nor is it particularly Wodehousian in tone. It reads more like Chekhov trying to "do" Wodehouse but eventually giving up. The premise is amusing, and the plot is chock-full of odd twists and turns, but it is to the author's credit that he does not follow the well-worn path this set-up leads to. Influenced heavily by Chekhov (in fact the plot mirrors that of "The Cherry Orchard," and Chekhov is invoked by the characters themselves throughout the novel), this book explores serious themes such as our inability to truly know or understand even those closest to us; the nature of hero worship and the damage it does to both worshipper and worshipee; the sometimes dubious benefits of "progress"; and the (mostly literary) myths of the nobility of the poor and the family as haven, among others.

The characters in AELG all seem powerless to improve their lots in life, and spend their days in alcohol-soaked, profound melancholy (is the author playing with Irish stereotypes, or are his characters quintessentially Irish?). Unraveling is the overall theme of this novel. It is a lament for a lost way of life, a vanished dream. Neither comedy nor fully tragedy, AELG manages to keep the reader off-balance throughout. It is this complexity - the exploration of literary, psychological and social themes in an elegiac tone lightened with flashes of humor that make this novel memorable, and make Paul Murray an author to watch.

5 out of 5 stars An Evening (or two) of Laughs!.......2007-01-14

This is one of the funniest novels I've ever read. On the cover of a lot of books it's stated that a novel is funny, but few ever live up to the hype. Sure, many are told in an amusing tone, but very few make you laugh aloud on a consistent basis. But Mr. Murray, with his wry Irish wit, delivers on page after page. The characters are well fleshed and vulnerable, the plot is straight ahead and convincing, and the humor comes from all angles. If you love British/Irish humor, or even if you don't, this is a novel not to be ignored.

3 out of 5 stars A bumpy ride.......2006-05-23

This one defies easy categorization. A disconcerting mixture of satire, melodrama, fantasy and farce. Unlike several of the reviewers, I felt that the account of Charles lolling about his ancestral home was forced and stagey. The dialog spoken by the pantomime characters is predictable and empty. Charles's take on the Irish economic boom, the so-called Celtic Tiger, however, is accurate, deft and very funny. His completely underwhelmed response to Ireland's ballyhooed economic miracle is worth the many speed-ups, slow-downs and improbablities that drive the over-heated plot.

1 out of 5 stars I waited and tried as long as I could... .......2006-01-17

As much as I hate to muddle up a list of great reviews for this book, I gotta wonder who's finishing it?? I read and read and read for 110 pages just waiting for the story to hook me, draw me in, give me the side-splitting pains from laughter... and came up with nothing.

This was book #1 for a brand new bookclub... luckily we were all able to forgive, forget, and move on. No one else could finish it either! I don't get it! Sorry!

5 out of 5 stars You can't help but LOVE Charles.......2005-10-25

This book was so incredibly funny. The main character, Charles, is sure to win your heart over with his innocence and naivety to the real world. He is charming and amazingly unaware of his surroundings because he's so self-absorbed. This high-society brat ends up learning about life the hard way from an unlikely character, Frank, who is Charles' complete opposite, and you can't help but cheer this friendship on. Paul Murray gives such a vivid description of Charles that you can literally see how out of place he is in his surroundings, which in turn will make you crack up trying to visualize it all. This was one of those books that when you finish it, you want to pick it right back up again and start all over.

5 out of 5 stars Mills is the Catherine Coulter of the Christian world..........2007-03-10

This book is what I like to call a "gut-clencher"...completely riveting. I read it in two days (it would surely have been one day if it weren't for my two young children). If you like a historical romance with a tough-as-nails yet vulnerable heroine, a wonderfully realistic romance and clear Christian message, this book is a sure thing. I love how Mills manages to portray flawed believers struggling with real faith issues while avoiding the cliche preachiness that many Christian authors fall into. And the action/suspense is enough to keep you turning the pages well past your bedtime.

Excellent book. A definite must read!

1 out of 5 stars Don't be misled.......2007-01-19

I have to wonder if I read the same book that all these other five star reviewers read. This book proved a real disappointment, after I had already purchased this book and its sequel. All I found was a slow-paced and unrealistic plot with uninteresting characters. I couldn't even bring myself to finish the book, because I found that I just didn't care what happened in the end. I try to pick books that will be captivating and realistic, whether it's a fantasy, mystery, action/adventure or romance. But this book did nothing for me, so I would not recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Authentic western filled with grace & redemption..........2006-11-12

Leather & Lace is the first book in DiAnn Mills' Texas Legacy series, released by Barbour. With this novel Mills has woven a powerful tale of one woman's redemption from her past and one man's release from an all-consuming bitterness, through the grace of God having their lives restored and their wounded spirits healed. The theme of this novel reminded me of this passage from the book of Joel that I had come across several years ago when a friend of mine was going through a very difficult time due to illness:

"I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten...my great army that I sent among you. You will have plenty to eat, until you are full, and you will praise the name of the Lord your God, who has worked wonders for you; never again will my people be shamed. Then you will know that I am in Israel, that I am the Lord your God, and that there is no other; never again will my people be shamed." (Joel 2:25-27)

This is a novel about restoration, powerfully told. On a purely personal level, I have really enjoyed this story simply because it's a well-written western, loaded with adventure and romance. As a kid I cut my reading "teeth" on the likes of Louis L'Amour and Clarence Mulford, authors who excelled at making the Old West and the people who lived during that time come unforgettably alive. There are quite a few CBA novels out there that simply don't do justice to the source material -- they fall terribly flat and all too often are filled with unbelievable plots and insipid characters. Mills doesn't whitewash the hardships of the time period. She succeeds in creating engaging characters, has a good feel for the time, and most of all writes a rollicking good story. Mills has got a lot of potential and is an author I'll enjoy hearing more from.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing .......2006-08-23

I loved this book. It was well written and a page turner from the start to the finish. I found Cassy's story to be something new. I will be reading many more books by this author

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining read!.......2006-08-02

Casey O'Hare is running for her life. What starts out as a quick getaway from an outlaw band and the man who thinks he owns her, ends up with a mysterious stranger, looking down the barrel of his gun. Casey can't decide whether to shoot the handsome lawyer, Morgan Andrews, or trust him.

Author DiAnn Mills takes the reader on a wild historical western ride with Casey and Morgan and the bloodthirsty Jenkins gang. Casey wonders if running away is worth the risk. Can she start her life anew? Or is her desire to do so putting everyone else in danger? Or worse, is Morgan friend or foe--is he setting her up for the kill?

I found the characters in this story entertaining and engaging and enjoyed this trek into the old west--the time of horses and wagons and small towns and outlaws. Ms. Mills does a memorable job of weaving this historical tale.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Nice but short........2006-09-03

Leather & Lace 4 is a small collection of drawings dealing with women, or sometimes just a single woman, in interesting fantasy, erotic or pinup poses. While some, like the artwork of Arantza are truly lovely and the works of Pedro Cuevas and Mitch Byrd showed imagination, most are just straight forward nudes and even seem a tad lifeless and bland. Also I noticed that one drawing by Pelaez was even repeated later in the book. Maybe the earlier books used up all the good ideas? I may have to buy them and find out. But I suggest you get this one used.

5 out of 5 stars SIZZLING HOT BONDAGE ART!.......2005-12-09

Leather & Lace Volume 4 is a fantastic entry in the ever popular Gallery Girls collections from SQP. This rather over fetish book's theme is, as the title says, all about sexy leather and lace, but bondage is an equal member of the trio as nearly every piece in the book is a woman on woman bondage illustration and some of the sexiest work ever to come from SQP. The front cover is courtesy of Pelaez who gets things off to a rolling start. Girl on girl fetishes, cat fights, breast fights...it's all within the pages of one of the hottest Gallery Girl editions ever.

Pelaez, always one of my favorites provides a piece showing a blonde bound by her hands to a headboard as a leather clad dominatrix stands nearby armed with a cat-o-nine tails. Colucci's bound prisoner is also blonde and being spanked on the rear end with a riding crop by her mistress. The men in the bar of a drawing by Pedro Cuevas are looking very delighted and amused as two topless women battle it out, breasts first in this great piece.

Marcelo Sosa provides one of the standout pieces in the book as a woman in garter and nylons digs her spiked heels into the back of her subservient slave who is on her knees. Arantza gives us the best of both worlds with a blonde in lace and a brunette in leather, having suggestive fun with a water hose. Isaac Del Rivero offers another stunningly hot dominatrix in thigh high leather boots and whip leading two nude women about by a leash. Later, Del Rivero provides the most graphic fetish piece as his subject is bound and suspended in mid-air as her mistress playfully licks her helpless toes. Pelaez has an entire series of drawings with another on-going cat fight, or more accurately, a breast duel between two buxom babes.

Dani Saurez ends the book on a high note with a beautifully painted back cover. An absolute must have for bondage or fetish fans and a sizzling hot edition of Gallery Girls.

Ms. Forster, I love your voice and writing style! Great characters, great storyline and sense of humor, WONDERFUL sexual tension. I'm so not foot-kissing here, either, but I have to tell you, too, that pov switching within scenes usually makes me batty, but even though you did it now and then, it was just as smoothly and seamlessly as La Nora. On my way to shower, and then jump hubby. And that's also something a book, in and of itself, hasn't inspired me to do since Betina Krahn's THE PRINCESS AND THE BARBARIAN! *blushing*

Ahem. Thanks for a marvelous read, Suz! I can't wait to dive into the other two stories...a little later. : )

5 out of 5 stars Three hot and sexy stories.......2005-08-01

Velvet, Leather and Lace is a sensational anthology by three hot authors.

A Man's Gotta Do by Suzanne Forester had designer/finance man Jaime Baird in a jam. Everyone thinks that all women run the lingerie company Velvet, Leather and Lace. He searches his little black book for a woman to pretend to be him for an interview. Jaime gets more then what he bargained for when Lorna Sutton takes the challenge and Jaime on. Lorna has a score to love `em and leave `em Jaime but neither was prepared for the feelings to grow.

Calling The Shots by Donna Kauffman has another partner in VLL Samantha Wallace. Samantha is all work and no play. Things have always been on her terms in love and in life. Her current lover Marshall Conley wants more and how. He turns the tables on Samantha and brings out a steamier side to them both.

Baring It All by Jill Shalvis has partner Mia Tennario up a creek when her contractor quits days before the big fashion show. She turns to her best friend Jake Holbrook for help. Jake is willing to help but he wants more from Mia then just a thank you. He wants her to be willing to explore that they can have it all.

Velvet, Leather and Lace is wonderful anthology. Each story flowed into the next. It's a very hot and steamy read.

5 out of 5 stars 2 out of 3 isn't bad.......2005-07-18

This is an anthology about three partners in the lingerie catalogue company Velvet, Leather & Lace.
The first story is "A Man's Gotta Do" by Suzanne Forster. This is the first book that I've read by the author and I have to admit that I was disappointed. It could have been that I just wasn't in the mood, you know, where you go back later and read it and actually like it. But whatever it was, it did not keep my attention. I found myself drifting off and thinking of other things and having to practically drag myself back to the story. That isn't good. Furthermore, I kept checking the number of pages to see how close I was to the ending. There isn't any one thing that I can name that was wrong with it. It had humor, which is important to me. Great sex, which I like in my romances. I just couldn't connect with the characters. Jamie Baird is the lone male in of the partners. He designs the lingerie and, up until now, his identity as a man has been kept a secret. But now as they are about to hit the big-time with a fashion show, the press is clamoring for a look at the mysterious Jamie. In desperation, Jamie goes to his "little black book" and picks out a woman he thinks could pass herself off as "Jamie Baird, lingerie designer" for a big interview. He picks Lorna Sutton, a woman he went out with twice, had combustible sex with and then never contacted again. Lorna agrees, but only to bring Jamie down a peg or two. Of course, passion ensues and they fall in love. I did like the fact that Lorna, the heroine, was not a size 3 supermodel, but rather a curvaceous full-figure woman. Otherwise, I was not impressed.

Okay, Donna Kauffman's "Calling the Shots" was next and I like Donna Kauffman. But wait, this is dark. No humor. I just can't get into men ordering woman around and degradation, even simulated S&M. Again, agony to get through and I can't think of anything I liked about this one. A shame, because I do like Ms. Kauffman's work a lot. Partner Samantha Wallace has issues with intimacy - not the sexual kind, but letting people close to her. Marshall Conley is a horse trainer who has been her lover for a while and has now fallen in love with her. As I sit here trying to describe this story, words elude me. It's too convoluted. Something about making her give up her need to control things and trust him, and finally give herself to him completely. Sight deprivation, a rider's crop (which he never uses to whip her - I must point that out), etc. I wish I had skipped this one.

Now we are 0 for 2. I began reading this anthology on a Sunday night, reading approximately 1 ½ hours a night - and it took me four nights, 6 hours on two short stories. Wasted hours for me, so it was with a bit of trepidation that I turned to "Baring It All" by Jill Shalvis. By the end of the first page I was transfixed. This is the gem of the book, a lovely romp through the intricacies of falling in love. Mia Tennario and Jake Holbrook were neighbors and good friends. They spent a lot of time together playing games, eating out at least once a week and going to the movies. It was an important relationship to Mia, one that she wasn't willing to scrap for a sexual relationship because "desires waned .... they always did." Jake, on the other hand, had quite frequent fantasies about Mia and was willing to explore them. How he gets her to give in and watching their relationship blossom from friendship to love was a delight. Ms. Shalvis' humor, her connection with her characters and her obvious love for the journey of love makes for a very enjoyable read. One and a half hours later I was finished with her story and the only disappointment, for me, was reaching the end of the book. I wanted more. The five star rating for this story is for the Shalvis story alone. It was that good.

5 out of 5 stars three steamy Velvet, Leather & Lace romances .......2005-07-15

"Red Velvet" by Suzanne Forster. Several months ago playboy Jamie had the night of his life with Lorna, but stupidly walked away. Now, the CFO of Velvet, Leather & Lace needs someone built just like her to pretend to be him with the media as everyone wants to meet the "women" behind the successful "Hot at any age, sexy at any size" lingerie catalogue company. As he tries to persuade her to masquerade as a female him, they fall in love, but she does not trust him with her heart and he does not trust him with her heart either.

"Black Leather" by Donna Kauffman. VLL partner Samantha is a control freak at work, but also uses her acumen in her sex life needing to always be in charge. Her lover Marsh wants her to let go and let him be in charge in bed even some of the time or else he will leave in spite of being in love with Sam.

"White Lace" by Jill Shalvis. VLL graphic designer Mia needs help when her set is not right so she turns to her best friend Jake to fix her problems. Jake agrees but wants more than gratitude from the woman he loves.

These three steamy VLL romances heat up the sheets as each well written tale makes the case that mixing business with pleasure with the right person is hot and sexy.

That is...indeed what I have become after reading this novel. Each story focuses on the fetish of clothing (or lack of) in one way or another.
I was very suprised to find fetishes written about in this novel I used to think made me strange. This novel helped me feel less alone.
There are some chapters that are more explicit language than others.
However, I highly recommend this novel, it's very sexy and wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars clothing makes the encounter.......2005-12-07

Turning Thomas Carlyle's nineteenth century theory that in society clothing makes the man, twenty authors contribute tales in which clothing makes the sexual encounter. Some of the tales are XXX erotica and the few that are not are XX as the authors do not hide anything except some seductive garb. There is some profanity and obviously plenty of sex in various positions for instance one hunk who is the gold medalist of tonguing spends much of his time buried in a head scissor and then there is the collars and codpieces they use to have even more fun. These fun fantasy frolics are not for everyone because it runs much of the gamut of sensual pleasures to include S&M targeting those fans who appreciate equatorial heat in their shorts will enjoy LEATHER, LACE AND LUST; my spouse did and he did not read the book nor borrow the dog's collar or own a codpiece as for silk.

        3 out of 5 stars Cimarron Rose.......2006-05-05

Less offensive than the last book I read by Dixon (Diamond Queen), fairly standard romance in most ways - if you don't mind sex being referred to as "boring into her" all the time, or the thankfully short scene (but repeated) where Rose is groped by her father.

Rose's father is an abusive man without friends and his family hates him. When her step-mother, his second wife, dies, things get even worse. The only bright spot in Rose's life in is George, aka Bitter Creek. He won her box at a church box social and they fell in love immediately. When he reveals his life as an outlaw to her, she stands by him but refuses to marry him. Will she change her mind before a lawman's bullet makes it too late?

I find it hilarious that Rose accepted being told by George that she would, henceforth, refer to him as Bitter Creek. It also amuses me that both books I've read by Dixon have the same basic line in it - "I have taken your maidenhead and you are mine." But that's not the cake-taker in my opinion. I search romance novels for the most ridiculous lines and Cimarron Rose brings us "Another week and I'll be sucking your breasts raw and driving deep into you with love." There's a man a girl can swoon over, huh?
