Book Description

USA Today called Jo-Ann Mapson's national bestseller, Bad Girl Creek, "a valentine to oceans of good women who survive bad beginnings and worse men." Now the author, hailed as "one of the most gifted writers of the contemporary urban West" (Los Angeles Times), brings back the hard-luck women of her acclaimed previous novel -- and introduces another indelible character into their midst.

"Me, I need a map to tell which town I'm in. I feel like ten miles of bad road, wondering how I got to where I am...." After finally wising up to her drunken rodeo-crooner lover ("Imagine Kevin Costner with an overbite"), Mary Madigan saddles up her twin Border collies and takes her act on the road, leaving miles of heartache and highway behind. Maddy's journey takes her across the South -- singing in and winning one karaoke contest after another -- and inexorably closer to a dreaded showdown with her past.

In Oklahoma City, she meets Rick, a journalist haunted by his own ghosts. After he loses his job, he travels to his childhood home to set up camp. When he first runs into Maddy, she gives him the cold shoulder. But he's charming, and persistent, and before Maddy knows it she's got a travel companion and a new lover (with an all-too-familiar set of tricks). Their travels will ultimately bring them to Bad Girl Creek, where the ladies know him as "Rotten Rick" -- because he broke Nance's heart -- and where the waters have already been troubled.

Phoebe's pregnancy is life-threatening, Nance's breakup diet has turned dangerously successful, Beryl is still struggling to adjust to life after prison, and HIV-positive Ness is distancing herself from the "healthy" world -- if you can call it that.

But these are the Bad Girl Creek ladies: they are resilient. They have character. And, above all, they love each other. The ways they all pull together, cheer each other on through good times and bad, and cope with every curveball life throws at them make up the heart and soul of this powerful new novel, a bighearted book certain to win this exceptional author a new legion of devoted readers.

5 out of 5 stars Another good one from Joann Mapson.......2006-11-02

I just wrote a review for another of Joann's books called A Bad Girl Creek Novel, this Book and Good-bye Earl are a set of 3 books that go hand in hand with one another. You won't go wrong with purchasing these books, this set is one that should definately be made into a movie.

3 out of 5 stars Love the Bad Girls.......2006-02-14

While I did not enjoy this as much as Bad Girl Creek, I still found it a good read. (I absolutely hated the way this began. What a shocker.) The characters are still as wonderfully flawed and we have added a new main character, Mary. And we have gotten some new insight on Rotten Rick. The Bad Girl books are about true friendships. Don't you wish we all had a Phoebe or a Ness in our lives?

5 out of 5 stars One of the best...........2005-08-21

This book was one of the best I've read so far. While "Bad Girl Creek" wasnt one of my favorites, this little gem sure was. I couldn't put it down, I was so intrigued by it...especially Phoebe and Sally. Can't wait to read "Goodbye Earl."

4 out of 5 stars Can't Wait for Earl...........2005-01-28

Having read wilder Sisters, Bad Girl Creek and Now Along Came Mary I'm waiting not so patiently for Good Bye Earl! My favorite so far as been Bad Girl simply becuase I feel like I "Know" the characters...to me they are so typical of they way good friends see eachother, need eachother...and just know eachother. Mary was great with the added characters and dogs! Maybe someone will give me Earl for my birthday!!!

4 out of 5 stars Another great one!.......2004-11-30

She has done it again! Another great book in the Bad Girl series. It is true, although we don't get but glimpses here and there of our fav girls, we do get enough to feed the question of what is going on with each of them. This book only took me a couple of hours. I can't put them down! You won't be able to either! Enjoy!

Book Description

From the acclaimed author of The Wilder Sisters comes this bittersweet, deeply moving story of four displaced women who unite to run a flower farm, heal their hearts, and real- ize the depth and necessity of friendship.

Phoebe Thomas has lived life as a spectator, confined to a wheelchair, in awe of her beloved Aunt Sadie and overshadowed by her financial wizard brother, James. But when Sadie dies, leaving her a flower farm, the world opens up to Phoebe in ways she could never have imagined. Taking in three roommates to help get the farm running, she finds herself, for the first time in her life, part of a close circle of woman friends. Each displaced from her home, these four women form an invaluable bond as they help one another learn to change their lives.

Set against the gorgeous backdrop of California's central coast, Bad Girl Creek is the inspiring story of how friendship and purpose can transform even the most compromised of women, as well as situations. With her rich, melodic prose and charming wit, Jo-Ann Mapson enchantingly chronicles female strength, family complexities, life crises, the use of humor as a curative power, and love in all its many aspects. Bad Girl Creek is a breathless and pitch-perfect tragicomedy of female friendship in the new American West.

5 out of 5 stars Bad Girl Creek.......2007-01-06

Jo-Ann Mapson leaves you wanting to read more about everyone in the book...which she does in the next two books in this series. She is one of the best at women's fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book, great author.......2006-11-02

This book is an awesome book, I found this author when i bought a book, on special from my local BJ's store, it was only $4.99 and being a book buff I couldn't pass it up and I am so glad I did. So I searched and searched for this author and am so glad I did cause this book and another one and the one I bought were all in a set of 3. You won't go wrong with purchasing this book, as well as Good Bye Earl and Along Came Mary they go hand in hand with one another.

5 out of 5 stars Mapson novels should come with a warning label: ADDICTIVE .......2006-09-29

This was the novel that hooked me on author Jo Ann Mapson. I have read and loved all of her books. She writes about community and love and family in a way that few others can. Her prose is addictive! Her novels are the ultimate fiction escape.

5 out of 5 stars great!!!.......2006-07-26

I'm only half way into the book but can't put it down. Makes me laugh out loud! Great characters, books like this don't come along often. Realistic but hopeful!

4 out of 5 stars Totally Enjoyed!!.......2006-01-11

I really enjoyed the book. The characters were wonderful. Very human, complete with flaws. They all begin with those flaws, feeling themselves lost and adrift, but when they find each other, they find themselves and realize that they are all strong women. When I read the last page I knew there had to be a sequel. I haven't read it yet but will be picking that up soon. I hope Mapson continues with the same strong characters. I lent this to friends who have enjoyed it as well.

Book Description

Five challenging years have passed in the lives of the ladies of Bad Girl Creek. Beryl, Nance, Ness, and Phoebe have experienced their share of hardship and heartache, but also much happiness.

Beryl now lives with Earl in Alaska, where the fissures in their relationship have started to spread. When Earl disappears one wintry night, some dark and desperate memories surface, forcing Beryl to take inventory and withdraw from her friends while she works things out. Nance, on the heels of a string of devastating miscarriages, has been advised to stop trying for a baby. Phoebe finds herself overwhelmed by her own daughter, Sally, who is five-years-old-going-on-thirty; meanwhile she is being romanced by an enigmatic Southern charmer named Andrew. And Ness tenderly nurses David Snow as he gradually succumbs to AIDS. The farm's successes have brought profits, but when a nursery opens across the road, the bar is set higher yet again. As Beryl wonders at Earl's fate, she is isolated by more than geography. Even as her friends in California are wondering what happened to Beryl, Beryl wonders the very same thing.

But life rolls on, and in the midst of myriad misfortunes come explosive surprises. The old friends are challenged to reunite once again, to rediscover with fresh eyes the powerful words in Aunt Sadie's journal: Live life to the fullest. Love as often as you can. Regret nothing. Eat hearty. Laugh often. Plant flowers. And don't forget to dance.

3 out of 5 stars Goodbye and Good Riddance.......2006-02-14

I still did not enjoy this as much as Bad Girl Creek but it is still a very good read. Anyone who read the first two will enjoy this. Earl turns out not to be what he seemed....or maybe more than he seemed. Beryl finally seems to come to terms with her past life. And again, all the Bad Girls come together when push comes to shove. Lord, I wish I had friends like these!

5 out of 5 stars lovely elegy for earl and those like him.......2004-11-21

This book had depth and bittersweet loneliness in the suspenseful story of Earl and Beryl, set in a well-described Alaska. But the lusty bird-whispering man was the best part...come back, bird man, who needs Earl when you're around?

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing conclusion to the trilogy.......2004-06-18

I read the three books in this trilogy; I loved the first one for its realistic female characters. I liked the second one. This one? The book company must've made the author write a third one. It sounded like she ran out of steam, and her characters had become little more than stereotypes: the sassy African-American, the wry disabled woman (I was ready to strangle Phoebe with her loud-mouth remarks by the end of this book), the Southern belle who becomes nothing more than a lacquered Barbie doll in this offering (and Nance was so wonderful and realistic in the first). The author seemed to just throw in plot points: well, Beryl's relationship doesn't work out, it might be nice to bring in a Native American for a while, Phoebe should get a disabled boyfriend, how about one of the women gets sick, now? I was disappointed that a story of women's friendship that was so enjoyable at first ended on such a flat note, and I was tired of the author using her characters to push Christianity and vegetarianism. In this book it seemed that every second sentence had Ness or Nance talking about God or a vegetarian reminding someone else that Nance had given up meat. It's a shame that four such realistic, diverse characters ended up sounding like the same uninteresting woman.

3 out of 5 stars A good series comes to an end...........2004-03-02

The first of this trilogy by Jo-Ann Mapson was "Bad Girl Creek", which, in my opinion, is the best of the 3 books. I hated for it to end. It grabbed your attention right away and held it. The reader eagerly anticipated book 2 - "Along Came Mary", while 'though entertaining, just didn't have the same punch as the first one. Other members of my book club agreed, as we read it together. This third and last book starts in Alaska, where a former "bad girl" Beryl has to deal with her relationship with Earl and his disappearance. The first 50 pages are slow, but it gets better after that. The most delightful part of the book was the budding little "Sally" the child that was born to Phoebe in the 2nd book. Her fiesty-ness is fun to read about, as is Phoebe's role as her invalid mother. The relationship that Phoebe develops with Andrew went along interestingly enough, but the reader wants to know him better, we wanted more .... more dialogue, more depth.

Beryl's detachment from the girls at Bad Girl Creek is frustrating for the reader that found her so bonded to them in the other books. We got more insight into Beryl's background in this book.

I love JoAnn Mapson's writing, especially "Bad Girl Creek" and "The Wilder Sisters". I hope she gives us more of her books in the future, but I expected a little more out of this one.

3 out of 5 stars confusing.......2004-02-02

I love Mapson, I love the bad girls, I love every other novel by Mapson. I want to love this book so badly and had of course, pre-ordered it, but I found it confusing. It seemed choppy, and the characters didn't seem to flow from the first two books. There wasn't enough conflict? I'm not sure. I am a loyal fan and will try re-reading it after reading the first two more recently, and maybe the pieces of the puzzle will fit together better. Usually her books make me feel like I'm sailing down a blue river on a wonderful raft. Like I can't wait to spend more time inside the covers of the book. This one I was able to put down no problem. Never less than three stars for Jo-Ann though....

The fact that there are few women occupying top-level positions in corporate America has, for a long time, been blamed on a ubiquitous "glass ceiling." But according to Gail Evans, this is a tired myth implying a woman is a "person-who's-done-to instead of a person-who's-doing." In Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman, CNN's ebullient--and successful--executive vice president puts forth a new thesis: women are not in star positions because they haven't yet learned how to play the game.

The game of business is played on a field where males have been comfortable since they were very young, says Evans. It's a game where winning is the obvious (and only) objective and where aggression, self-promotion, a tough skin, and an effective display of power are the signs of a winner. Women, on the other hand, enter the game disadvantaged, having been taught to be cooperative rather than competitive, to enjoy the process rather than simply the result, and to seek approval rather than assume success. In her entertaining, informative, and practical book, Evans sets out to level the playing field by providing instructions on how men play and by teaching women to play smarter and win on their own terms. In one section, where she offers such advice as "Toot Your Own Horn," "Accept Uncertainty," and "Be an Imposter," Evans presents a common business scenario. She shows the typical male and female responses to it, analyzes the problem with the woman's reaction, and offers advice on what to do differently. Writing in light, accessible prose, Evans supports her observations with both personal and professional anecdotes and covers the gamut of women's experiences on the corporate path. Evans's message is inspiring: women can learn to play the game as well as any man and bring with them a unique set of skills and experiences.

It's impossible to ignore a woman who has reached the top of her profession in a tough business and is still prepared to claim that "everything I ever needed to know about business I learned driving the car pool." --S. Ketchum

      Book Description

Women make up almost half of today's labor force, but in corporate America they don't share half of the power. Only four of the Fortune 500 company CEOs are women, and it's only been in the last few years that even half of the Fortune 500 companies have more than one female officer.

A major reason for this? Most women were never taught how to play the game of business.

Throughout her career in the supercompetitive, male-dominated media industry, Gail Evans, one of the country's most powerful executives, has met innumerable women who tell her that they feel lost in the workplace, almost as if they were playing a game without knowing the directions.

She tells them that's exactly the case: Business is indeed a game, and like any game, there are rules to playing well. For the most part, Gail has discovered, women don't know them.

Men know these rules because they wrote them, but women often feel shut out of the process because they don't know when to speak up, when to ask for responsibility, what to say at an interview, and a lot of other key moves that can make or break a career.

Now, in her book Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman, Gail Evans reveals the secrets to the playbook of success and teaches women at all levels of the organization--from assistant to vice president--how to play the game of business to their advantage.

Sharing with humor and candor her years of lessons from corporate life, Gail Evans gives readers practical tools for making the right decisions at work. Among the rules you will learn are:

      • How to Keep Score at Work
      • When to Take a Risk
      • How to Deal with the Imposter Syndrome
      • Ten Vocabulary Words That Mean Different Things to Men and Women
      • Why Men Can be Ugly, and You Can't
      • When to Quit Your Job

Evans is not saying that every woman has to play exactly by men's rules--not at all. Women bring many inherent traits to the workplace that can provide them with a potential advantage over men, such as a woman's ability to form relationships, or her intuition. But women do need to know the basic rules so that they can understand the full consequences of their every action and how it makes an impact on their career.

An honest and practical handbook that reveals important insights into relationships between men and women and work, Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman, is a must-read for every woman who wants to leverage her power in the workplace.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST book on Success in the business arena for Women!.......2007-04-21

I love this book! Easy to read. Easy to understand. Uses real examples of situations and shows you your choice for action. Basic Premise is *Here is the situation* & here are your choices as to how to handle it* ~Make your own decision as to how you want to do it, just be aware of your choices and their implications. I will read this one again!!

5 out of 5 stars Gail Evans is my new hero!.......2007-03-19

The knowledge that men and women function differently isn't new and there are plenty of books on the topic already. Most of the books I've read on the subject do a great job of identifying our differences and how men and women communicate or socialise but aren't so good at discussing anything real about how we behave in the workplace. Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman is all about how we work, how we are perceived and motivating factors for success.

Gail Evans is my new hero on the topic of career success for women. She writes from her own experience with real life anecdotes from other men and women in management roles. Her style is very easy to read, pleasantly candid, and often humourous which really is refreshing for this type of book. I find a lot of books on gender relations to be overly serious and a bit too textbook for my taste. Evans also counsels women to be themselves and not try to be men but to retain uniquely female qualities such as intuition and emotional intelligence, something that can be lacking from women working at executive level these days.

This book is an excellent resource for women in business at any level but particularly useful for new grads or women working in entry level roles who don't have a great deal of experience with the politics and strategy of dealing with men in management roles. This would also be an extremely valuable read for any men working in a classic male dominated heirarchic management structure with a predominantly female workforce (i.e. health, education).

5 out of 5 stars My wife loved it........2007-02-15

I bought this for my wife who works in a male dominated field. She loved this book and she talks about it all the time. I'm shocked she read it! Now I'm looking for my chance to sneak a read of it when she wont notice it missing from her book shelf. Trust me, if MY wife read it and liked it, it must be one damn good book. Maybe I'll buy my own copy and read it - I think I will. Second review to follow...

5 out of 5 stars Also applies to women who own a business or are self-employed.......2006-12-31

Gail Evans provides very practical advice in a very matter of fact way. As a consultant and trainer for Woman Owned Businesses I always look at women's business books from the woman-owned angle. Although the book is written primarily for women that are employees, almost everything in it is applicable to women who own businesses or are self-employed. One of the best parts of the book is the guidance on "getting picked for the Team." The "rules" in this section definantly apply to women business owners in negotiation and especially in marketing their products and services. There are several places in the book where Ms Evans points out that women don't ask, often waiting to be asked. This approach will not work if a woman business owner is seeking financing or selling her products/services. The advice in this section could help make a huge difference for women business owners. The very best advice in the book is about how women can use their relationship orientation and skills wisely and to advantage; women business owners can apply this to running and marketing their business. One other very good section is the explanation about "Yes is Yes." Unfortunately, we women don't always accept a Yes immediately, but continue explaining, seeking reassurance or justifying. I would recommend this book to any of my Woman Owned Business clients and workshop attendees.

4 out of 5 stars Common Sense Reminders.......2006-10-23

Frankly, reading the comments here was almost as much fun as reading the book. A couple of really negative reviews from guys who sound terribly bitter, one bad review from someone who thought she didn't know what she was talking about because he/she disagreed with a particular television report that she had a hand in producting, one negative comment because ... she had gotten too many positive comments before and just needed to be knocked down a notch? Not entirely sure if I got the gist of that one. A couple of middling to negative reviews from people who thought she was dead wrong. And then the majority of positive reviews who seem to think she brought some of these rules down after a chat with a burning bush.

Here's the thing - there are some tidbits of insight in here, but most of it is just common sense. Unfortunately, it's common sense that is easy to forget when you're caught up in the politics of an office. Sometimes the best lessons are the short reminders to get back to basics, and this book certainly does that.

There's nothing BAD in this book - all she says is that if you want to get ahead in a man's world, you at least have to know the rules. You aren't obligated to play by them, but don't get all testy when you don't get what you want. In fact, you don't even have to play at all. But why not use your knowledge of the game to get ahead? Why not take the path of least resistance?

It was refreshing how the story was presented, not strictly as a romance, but centered more on a precocious orphaned boy who worms his way into the hearts of the adults who rally behind him. Although they each have their own personal issues, the focus is on doing what's in the best interest of the child, and not on themselves. In the process of loving and caring for the boy, each of them finds soothing and healing of the long-ago wounds inflicted on their own hearts, as they learn to forgive themselves, make priorities and deal with their situations in life. The coastal small-town charm, and busting a drug smuggling operation gives added depth to the story, and of course, there's still lots of romance and sex to spice things up too! All-in-all, this was a well-presented, witty, entertaining book.

      4 out of 5 stars A fast paced read..........2003-05-28

Daisy Spencer nurtures children the only way she is able, through her teaching at the high school. When she finds Tommy Flanagan trying to hot-wire her car, she doesn't see a thief, she sees a ten year old boy who needs someone to love him. Without a thought to the consequences, Daisy takes steps to be a foster parent to Tommy. More happy than she has ever been, Daisy is devestated to learn that Tommy has an uncle who may or may not want to take Tommy. Happy for Tommy, but sad for herself, Daisy does everything she can to show everyone in the community and Tommy's uncle that she could be a good mother for the boy. She didn't count on her attraction to Walker Ames however.

Walker Ames has seen everything in his job as a detective in Washingtion, D.C. When he gets a call from a social worker in a small town in Virginia, Walker is shocked to learn that he has a nephew, and that his sister is dead. Not knowing what to expect, Walker takes the trip to the picturesque town.

About That Man is the story of Daisy, who can't have children of her own and reaches out to Tommy even at the risk of heartbreak. It is of Walker, who screwed up his own marriage, letting his own sons down in the process. Together, Daisy and Tucker make a family for a boy who has known too much sorrow in his young life, while finding humor in the smallest things.

      A good read!

I read this book in one afternoon! I just love stories that have saucy women and knuckle-headed guys and this book fits the bill. Throw in a couple of brothers and a meddling father and I'm sure you'll enjoy the read as much as I did. Oh yeah; there's some neckin' in there if you like that, too. Four thumbs up!

      5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2002-12-09

I am impressed by Sherryl's ability to engage humor, emotion and traditional values into a compassionate milkshake of caring, love, infatuation and passion.
Looks like a candidate for TV's "Hallmark Hall of Fame!"

2 out of 5 stars Great basics, but the details suffer.......2002-01-24

About That Man (and I have no idea what the title is supposed to mean!!!) is basically a flawed novel. But interestingly so. The primary and secondary characters are really fine, and start out promisingly (although the name "Daisy" for our heroine is too cutesy and doesn't fit her). At times, the dialog is fresh and funny. And, at times the secondary plots (Daisy's family, an orphaned boy, and drug dealing in a sleepy little town) are also promising, teasing the reader with the beginnings of a complex story that weaves suspense and wonderful romance (think Jennifer Crusie, Julie Garwood). But on all fronts, the story just falls flat. For every strong dialog exchange, there's another that's insipid and colorless. Daisy's family are just caricatures of blustering, "protective" men. All three (Dad and two brothers) have the makings of really funny and sweet protagonists (and we're promised the brothers stories, so we'll see)but they just pass in and out of scenes, making noise. The crime subplot NEVER takes off and doesn't make sense - it's almost an afterthought. I can't believe that there is a town in America (except in very strict religious communes, and this is supposed to take place in an East Coast resort town) where an unmarried woman of 30 would be in danger of losing any job because she MIGHT be having an affair with a 35-year-old single man. Perhaps Ms Woods is writing for an older audience than me (I'm 43)? Finally, I don't think she does enough of a job to convince me that Walker (our hero, who really does have all the makings of a wonderful hero - I'd love to see him in the hands of either of the aforementioned authors) has "seen the light". This is a man who has basically let his own flesh and blood sons leave his life (except 2 weeks a year)and he's going to take in his nephew? Aside from one passing reference late in the book, we get very little perspective on why his love for Daisy might be different than the love he felt for his ex-wife. I kept reading because I wanted to see how the book came out (hey, I paid good money and it wasn't total trash). Now here's the weird part - I do plan to buy the next book, to find out how Daisy's brother Bobby meets his match. See - I told you the characters had the makings of fine heros, let's hope that the rest of the story tightens up, or I may not make it to brother Tucker. (And he seems to be the most interesting of the entire group!!!)

It's not just funny, it's therapeutic. Linda Sunshine must have had her share of "some day I'll laugh at this" guys for all the wisdom here. This book tells you that you've got plenty of company wrestling with this guy stuff, and there are a hundred ways to deal with it that don't involve eating a pint of ice cream by yourself. I laughed out loud.

4 out of 5 stars Practical Theology for the Business Man.......2000-05-26

Pinstripe Parables is an excellent book written specifically for the Christian businessman or businessman interested in spiritual matters. Using the Holy Bible as a reference point, this book consists of twenty chapters, each containing one contemporary, fictional parable presenting biblical events as they might look if they happened today. Each fictional account is thought provoking and challenging, and immediately followed up with the Biblical reference from which the author (David McCasland) wrote his corresponding parable.

The book is rated high by myself due to many factors. First of all, it is easy reading. Once would think that theological discussions are too heavy, and they can be; but this one is not. Each chapter is short and easy to read/understand. Second of all, it is practical. The Holy Bible has been the most popular book in history because it is practical for our everyday lives and this book just points that out. It is amazing how often - in these contemporary parables - I see myself and am challenged to grow beyond where I am right now. Then to take time to read the Biblical passage at the end of each chapter and realize how easy it is to understand...wow! Finally, I like this book because it gets to the point and doesn't mix words. As a man, I like it's direct approach and it's willingness to discuss issues that are real in my life, even though I don't always want to admit it to others.

Check this book out or buy it for a friend (I just did). This is not just reading for the mind, but also for the heart!

This the sequel to "la vida exagerada de Martin Romana", and follows the same line as its predecesor. Whereas the former relates the story of Martin since his arrival in Paris and his life with his wife Ines during the late 60's, this ones relates to his post marital life as a latin american professor in France and his imposible romance to teenager Octavia, who comes from a rich european family. Really inspiring, and as all of Bryce novels, a masterpiece.
