Book Description
Hello.
I am Daniel Handler, the author of this book. Did you know that authors often write the summaries that appear on their book's dust jacket? You might want to think about that the next time you read something like, "A dazzling page-turner, this novel shows an internationally acclaimed storyteller at the height of his astonishing powers."
Adverbs is a novel about love -- a bunch of different people, in and out of different kinds of love. At the start of the novel, Andrea is in love with David -- or maybe it's Joe -- who instead falls in love with Peter in a taxi. At the end of the novel, it's Joe who's in the taxi, falling in love with Andrea, although it might not be Andrea, or in any case it might not be the same Andrea, as Andrea is a very common name. So is Allison, who is married to Adrian in the middle of the novel, although in the middle of the ocean she considers a fling with Keith and also with Steve, whom she meets in an automobile, unless it's not the same Allison who meets the Snow Queen in a casino, or the same Steve who meets Eddie in the middle of the forest. . . .
It might sound confusing, but that's love, and as the author -- me -- says, "It is not the nouns. The miracle is the adverbs, the way things are done." This novel is about people trying to find love in the ways it is done before the volcano erupts and the miracle ends. Yes, there's a volcano in the novel. In my opinion a volcano automatically makes a story more interesting.

A uniquely (though wonkily) written book about love.......2007-10-11
I alternated between really liking and really hating this book. I wanted to throw it down in disgust; I wanted to keep reading and have a few oddly placed lightbulbs go on in my head when reading something so different yet so well-said it actually made sense when nothing else did. Handler would probably say: And so it is with love...sometimes you really like it, sometimes you really hate it; sometimes you want to keep going, to have that person help you discover a lightbulb of sense in a dark and confusing world." Every adverb is related to something about love, and there are many times Handler relates occurrences (and adverbs) with "and that's also how love is."
More than halfway through the book, Handler (who has inserted himself into the book here and there as a character, which again, I didn't mind and yet I disliked) says, "it's not about the noun" - the magpies, the money, the drinks, the cigarettes, the taxis, even the sex (and there is a LOT of sex in this book) - "it's about the adverbs, or, how it's done." (How is love done in your life? This book will kind of make you think about that, and it will kind of be the most opposite of what you'd think of love in ANY life...)
Imperfect--exactly as it should be........2007-08-09
I raced through the first two-thirds of Adverbs and savored the remainder. I needed to think about it; digest it. It was messy, it represents San Francisco exactly as it is--weird; backward, full of strange characters and slightly, bizarrely dangerous. Mostly, though, this book is about love and how it makes you feel and what it does to you. In that respect and the odd magical realism that love puts you through--it's spot on. Adverbs is also my favorite book.
If everything tied itself up neatly in the end, it would have been disappointing and unfaithful to the way life and love treats people who are actually swept up in it.
Handler's characteristic wit in an "art" book.......2007-07-25
My first exposure to Daniel Handler was his Series of Unfortunate Events writing as Lemony Snicket. I was delighted with his clever dry wit. I appreciated how he captured the absurdity of mundane things. His turns of phrase were frequently genuinely hilarious. Inspired, I read his other works in this order, Watch Your Mouth and The Basic Eight. Of the two, I was more impressed with the latter (his earlier work). I found the narrative compelling while still enjoying the dry clever wit I had so appreciated in A Series. Watch Your Mouth also aptly displayed his sense of humor and his keen ability to take you into the minds of his characters. However, I did not appreciate the narrative so much. I relatively enjoyed the book but felt like something was missing. It was surreal somehow and left me feeling a little off and incomplete; like I wasn't quite sure what I had just experienced.
This brings me to his latest work, Adverbs: A Novel. The writing and style is classic Handler. And I find it impossible not to appreciate his very special literary talents. His ability with words and mundane thoughts is simply unmatched. We are being treated to the craft of a genius. That said, again, I felt the narrative was wanting. Of course, this is not a standard novel. As others note, the chapters are connected but not by a single plot weaving its way to a conclusion. No, each chapter can stand alone, though it likely shouldn't. Surely Handler has some master plan behind it all, but I could not for my life identify what it was. Yes, the book is about love - whatever that means. I find myself asking that very question... what is love? Maybe he wants us to search ourselves for that answer... maybe not. He tells us that love is in the doing, or more precisely "how" we do it. Probably there is truth to that, but I am not sure how it relates to what I am reading.
There are recurring magpies, volcanoes, taxis, musicians, and even names or plights of characters, many of whom could be the same people but somehow likely are not. As he takes us into the minds of these people (as only he can), there is often a strong sense of paranoia or suspicion. But time and again we never see the narrative outcome of these things. I am left asking what they were really thinking... what really happened? It just feels like there is something else there; yet it remains out of reach. Some readers may enjoy such an experience. I don't particularly.
I compare reading Adverbs to watching an "art" film. It's an "art" book. The point is not in the plot or the meaning but in the experience. I, however, like my experiences with a point. The experience alone is just hollow to me. I didn't really want to finish the book but I forced myself to. Even with a chapter remaining, I looked at the book and sighed. "Do I have to?"
I think Handler is an amazing talent. Selfishly, I just hope he puts that talent to use in a way that I will find more appealing. Putting his genius into a more conventional narrative would be most welcome.
Unexpectedly wonderful.......2007-07-14
After having read The Basic Eight and a few of the volumes in A Series of Unfortunate Events, I picked this up for a light and absorbing plane-read on my way to a funeral. I was thrilled, then, to find it both unexpectedly poignant and powerful. Handler's easygoing and conversational voice effortlessly masks real linguistic prowess, allowing me to read his stories as breezily or as pensively as I chose. Truly a book of linked short stories, rather than a "novel" as the back cover suggests, the brief and wonderful character connections between stories provide an additional layer of resonance (and, as in all story collections, some pieces are stronger than others; "soundly," in particular, stood out to me as near-perfect). If anything, the "adverbs" device -- each story begins with an adverb describing the particular brand of love highlighted within -- while clever, was almost too trite for such a deep, subtle, and lovely collection.
Funny and delightful collection of linked stories about love.......2007-06-10
Daniel Handler's aka Lemony Snicket new novel, Adverbs is both funny and delightful. It's a collection of linked stories about love. The discovery of love, the slyness of love, the suddenness and the loss of love. Handler plays games with the reader; characters reappear throughout, subtly altered. Sometimes two entirely different characters will share a name and maybe an important trait. My favorites are Helena, the English novelist whose book hasn't really taken off and who is running out of money. Out of desperation she takes a teaching job offered by Andrea, one of Helena's husband's ex-girlfriends. I also liked Allison, the wife of a highly regarded cartoonist named Adrian. Allison is on her first Comics Cruise (a real thing) where cartoonists and their fans gather on a cruise ship for shop talk and fun in the sun. Adrian hates the idea and stays behind. Allison also hates the idea but she goes anyway. And there's Sam, who is only named in the next-to-last story but who also may be in the final segment. Sam shares traits with both Helena (Sam, too, has no money) and with Allison (she'd like to do violence to stupid people. Unfortunately for both Sam and Allison, they find most people stupid). Many of the male characters aren't sympathetic, although there is hope in Joe. Handler also inserts himself into several of the stories, addressing the reader directly, as in "My wife hates this record" or "this really happened, in exactly the place and the way I'm describing to you". This technique doesn't always work for me but Handler pulls it off here. Literary games don't always work for me either but again, Handler pulls it off. This is the best book I've read since Man Walks into a Room by Nicole Kraus.

Pretty decent hard to put down for Erotica.......2007-10-09
Book 2 in the series was definitely the strongest of the three! I think if I had read these in order, I might not have gotten past Marley's Choice - and I thought Heather's Gift was a real let down as well. I think both Brock and Sarah were the best developed of the characters and most consistent in the series of three books.
Much stronger than the first book.......2007-06-03
Brock August was counting the days until he could take Sarah to his bed. But she got scared and ran from him and married Mark Tate. Now her marriage to Mark is over and Brock is not going to lose his chance to be her again. But as soon they get together the terror starts again and now Sarah is the target and Brock will do anything to protect her.
"Men of August: Sarah Seduction" is the second book in the August series by Lora Leigh and once again I really enjoyed because in this book the over all storyline and the reason behind the brother's actions become more clear to the reader. Again this series may not before everyone but is worth checking out.
Leaves me flat ..........2007-03-07
As much as I love Leigh's Breeds, this series leaves me flat. The Men of August is about 3 brothers who suffered some heinous abuse in their younger years thereby warping them in such a way that they must share their women to be able to express their love for each other.
Uh, yeah, oooookay.
I'm not buying it either.
Obviously Leigh wanted to write a menage type erotica story, and concocted this plot line to assuage the squeamish. The only problem is ... it doesn't make a lick of sense.
I thnk the problem with this one for me, aside from the above mentioned reasons, is that I didn't like the heroine much. Her constant battle with herself over her love for the hero just became annoying.
Still there was a good enough hook into the third of this series, so I'll probably continue on.
Sarahs Seduction.......2007-01-16
Let me tell you. Lora Leigh is quite the writer. To take a taboo subject and to turn it into a masterpiece. That is exactly what she has done. I can't wait to read the rest of The Men of Agust Series.
Not Lora Leigh's best, but not atrocious either.......2006-08-23
OK, Men of August isn't as good as the Breeds books, but it's still pretty hot. Those who like Lora Leigh's other erotica will probably like this as well.
It's true that there is a lot of stupidity in the plotting of this book (and the other August books). Yeah, it's dumb that the brothers have threesomes to "heal" and I didn't really care for all the psychobabble explanations.
But that didn't make it any less erotic that they did like to have threesomes. And that's the point of the book - Brock and Sarah are in love, but Sarah is having a lot of difficulty coming to terms with the fact that if she is going to be with Brock, she will also have to be with the other brothers.
And that, not the whole sexual healing bit, was probably the most annoying thing - how many women would have a hard time with the idea of being loved by three incredibly hot guys? The August men have the unique ability to find the most prudish, unaccepting women out there. So that was stupid, sure. And Sarah was annoying.
And I still couldn't put the book down. The eroticism was done so well that it was easy to ignore all that, most of which was just background anyway.
The writing itself is not bad at all. In fact, it's one of Lora Leigh's better written books. The lines about souls shattering are unfortunate, but they don't characterize the majority of the book.
I would recommend the August books to fans of LL's other books, although I'd point out that the Breeds books are still the best of all of them. It's hard to find writing as erotic as Lora Leigh's, and the erotic scenes are done well in this book, as in all her books. For those for whom perfect plotting and totally plausible dialog are more important, this may not be a great choice.

Beautiful and Well-Written Debut.......2006-04-10
Alex, the handsome Marquess of Caldern, returns from the navy and the war to an estate in ruins, a family plagued with troubles, and an arranged marriage he is not sure he wants. He then sees Sarah, the beautiful cousin and companion of his fiance Caroline, swimming nude in a pond on the estate. It is love at first sight for him. Not so for Sarah, who is drawn to Alex, but tries to fight his seduction - not only because of her cousin, but because a disasterous previous marriage. As Alex begins his seduction, so do the threats to his life. There is an intriguing set of characters woven into this story who are deep in deceit. Where is the danger coming from? - The angry step-mother, who dislikes Alex, but dislikes the illegitimate brothers more, the step-siblings, the cousins, friends, or some outside threat from the estate village? This well-written book captivated me from the very first page with its strong characters. I found that Sarah was not the only one seduced. I was too!
A Stellar Debut!.......2006-02-22
Ms. Clements debut effort is a very good start to her writing career. She has created some very dynamic characters and their story is compelling and of course romantic.
Sarah was married once before and vowed after the death of her husband to never marry again. She has accompanied her selfish cousin Katherine to the north in order to see if she will suit the Marquis of Caldern. Sarah thinks this will be an easy task...until she meets the handsome and strong willed lord. There is an instant attraction between them but her past is keeping her from trusting her heart that is until tragedy strikes.
Alex Caldern has returned to him home after an extended absence only to find out his stepmother has brought a shrew into his house along with an angel. He can't get her off his mind and with other matters taking his attention the idea of courting Katherine leaves him cold. But, when accidents starts to happen with shocking frequency he is forced to realize that maybe there is more to these incidents then meets the eye. Will Alex be able to convince his lady love to take a chance with him while at the same time finding out who wants him hurt before the mystery person succeeds in killing him?
Alex and Sarah are very entertaining characters. The secondary characters are also very important to the story and fine additions to the storyline. I look forward to reading Ms. Clements again in the future. She pens a sensual romance that will satisfy readers.
Good Debut!.......2006-01-25
The widowed Sarah Wellsley is accompanying her cousin, Caroline, as a companion while they await Caroline's prospective bridegroom to come home. Taking a swim in a secluded and private pond, Sarah is discovered by a handsome stranger. Assuming Sarah's morals are low by her public nudity, the stranger attempts to engage Sarah in a liason. Sarah is shocked to learn hours later that the stranger is none other than the Marquess of Caldern...Caroline's potential husband.
Having resigned himself to a loveless marriage, Alex, the Marquess of Caldern, is prepared to marry the shrewish Caroline. However Sarah intrigues him. He longs to possess her and she consumes his thoughts. But Sarah is happy in her widowhood; determined to answer to no man. Fighting her attraction to Alex, Sarah tries to escape Alex's attempts at seduction. But Alex is not going to give up his desire for Sarah, even with a mysterious danger surrounding him. As strange 'accidents' increase, it is obvious that someone is trying to kill him.
The Seduction of Sarah is the debut novel from author Cynthia Clement. As a voracious reader, I am always on the look-out for new authors. Since I am a huge fan of historical romance, I was especially tickled to see a new opportunity to feed my addiction! The Seduction of Sarah is an enjoyable first novel.
Alex and Sarah's relationship was very sensuous. The mystery element of the story had me stumped with an unlikely but believable villain. While parts of the book were slow, I was still satisfied. I will happily look for more from Ms. Clement!

Seduction for sure!!!!!!.......2005-11-17
You want a book that will keep you reading to a point you can't put it down. This is the book for you. Alex is such a gentleman in this book and he persued until he got what he wanted. Sarah is the typical try to be nice girl and do it right. Lets just say it is well worth the money to buy!!!!!
I really wanted to like it and did to some degree but . . ........2005-09-02
. . . there were just too many flaws to recommend. I love discovering new/debut authors and I was very keen to read this one but ultimately it's a disappointment.
Sarah Wellsley is a widow who has accompanied her spoiled, self-centered cousin Caroline to meet Caroline's prospective husband. Sarah's marriage was an unhappy one and she has no desire ever to marry again and give up her independence to a man. Since arriving at Caldern several weeks past, she has enjoyed a morning swim in a secluded pond on the estate. But one morning her solitude is interrupted by the appearance of a handsome stranger. They share a steamy kiss, neither realizing who the other is. When Sarah learns that the man who caught her naked and kissed her so thoroughly is, in fact, Caroline's intended, she tries to blend into the woodwork. Unfortunately, he has other ideas and refuses to let her.
He is Alex Norward, Marquess of Caldern who is recently returned from abroad to take up his duties, one of which is to marry and produce an heir. Unfortunately, it is not Caroline who warms his blood, but her unassuming cousin, Sarah. He is very attracted to her and she to him, but she is determined to resist him. He tries to back off and adhere to her wishes, but the more he is around her the more he wants her. He is certainly not going to marry the self-absorbed Caroline, but how to convince Sarah to take another chance on marriage - with him? But strange accidents begin to happen to Alex and he ultimately must face the fact that someone wants him dead - but who?
While I enjoyed aspects of the story and I liked Sarah and Alex, I found much of this a bit of a muddle. Alex is inconsistent in his actions alternately vowing to leave her alone and trying to seduce her. He initially singles her out for so much attention, in front of his entire family, guests and household, it would have surely been considered scandalous at the time. At one point he decides that she would be a good match for one of his stepbrothers but becomes furious when they speak together. His moods swing from brooding to mischievous and back again often. Caroline's character was so completely without merit that it seems inconceivable that anyone would want to marry her and given his apparent dislike of his step-mother, it seems unlikely that he would have left the choice of his future wife in her hands.
The mystery of who was trying to kill Alex was interesting (the culprit was a surprise) but could have been better executed. And I found there to be a few too many secondary characters - his step-siblings, his friend David, and his two (yes two!) bastard step-brothers - leaving the impression that, at least the last three were simply there to introduce future heroes for future books.
This author shows some promise but this attempt just fell a bit short of the mark. The cover art was very attractive, though - except they should lose the orange lipstick! It looks as though she has a book in the works for step-brother Nathan Carter and perhaps I'll give that a try, but first I'll wait to read reviews :)

fun for astrology lovers.......2007-01-12
This book has been a favorite of mine. Sexy descriptions and cute generalizations of the basic sun signs. I suggest you read their moon sign as well to get the whole personality.
I wore out this book.......2006-12-16
I bought this book about ten years ago, whe I was a teenager. It was a dirty little secret to me then. Older now, I know that quite a bit in the book is true. I mean, there's only so much one can learn about a man from his sun sign, and like most books, that's what it focuses on.
I bought this book and within a few months of light reading, the paper cover just fell off the binding. So, I have it bound with duct tape but I've kept it ever since. Seeing how cheap the used copies are, I suppose I could just rebuy one now. Glad it's on Amazon, I thought it was gone forever.
It's really worth the read. No one astrology book is going to give you all the answers. The only books that I can recommend without a doubt are "The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need" and "He's Just Not in the Stars." Oh, and Linda Goodman's books, of course.
But this one is entirely worth having in your collection.
Bizzare.......2001-01-18
I would never live my life according to what the stars say. I read this book out of curiosity and I laughed so hard my stomach hurt. The stars certainly don't know what my husband likes or dislikes, according to this book, I married the wrong man(even though I've been married for many years). this book is a joke!
The book is worth a laugh.......2001-01-17
I read this book and was not impressed. I have taken many astronomy classes and I have always been curious of all the different star signs, so I thought I would really like this book. I didn't, I thought it was totally stupid and this is why- This book claims that by looking at the stars, you can tell what kind of man is right for you, what he wants in bed, how he likes his women and things he won't tell you. Onl;y a total idiot believes this!. If you want to know what your man likes or what he wants in bed, you ask him! If I would have taken any advise from this book, I wouldn't be in the great commited relationship that I'm in. Of course I'm still very much interested in the stars, I'm just not willing to live my life according to what this author thinks the stars know.
Worth ten times what they are selling it for!!!.......2000-08-07
My copy of this book is in ruff condition, i take it everywhere, its been thru 7 moves in more then two years. I have used the information in this book as "inside help" it makes the biggest difference knowing so much about a man before you even get involved with him. Ot in many of my experience, i use the book to GET invovled with the men of my desires. there is an in depth chapter for every sign of the zodiac, offering helpful hints in every area, gives you an edge over any competition you might have. Including such topics for each sign as "how to drive me wild" "what he wont tell you" "HOw he likes his women" "what turns him on" "his secret paradox" and many more sections under each sign. I love this book and am getting it for everyone i know this year as birthday gifts. This is definately a book to add to your "must have" list.

Book Description
Don Juan is one of the intriguing creations of Western literature. A legendary seducer of women, trickster and transgressor of sacred boundaries, he has been the object of countless revisions over the centuries. The twentieth-century has viewed the figure afresh through the prism of its own cultural terms of reference and social concerns. Using an interdisciplinary approach, ‘Tales of Seduction’ focuses on the intersections between myth, culture and intellectual inquiry. Sarah Wright takes Don Juan back to Spain, his birth-place, and examines the confluences of Spanish culture with aspects of Western intellectual history (medicine, psychoanalysis, linguistics), where she finds Don Juan continues to transgress the limits of culture from the early twentieth century to the present.
