The setting is the progressive South United States of the 80s, where education and hard work offer hope for the good life--until mental illness brings tragedy. This is an unusual true-crime book because it's neither a whodunit, nor a manhunt, nor an account of a trial. Instead, it's a character study of a sadistic sexual predator who is all too human in his desperate need for love, and of his family members who need, just as desperately, to believe that their love for him will make them whole again. Authors Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith are adept at teasing out the many-layered subtleties of the criminal mind. Here they create a thought-provoking portrait by alternating passages from the well-educated killer's own diary, with the unfolding narrative of how the revelations of his crimes are affecting his family. It includes a surprising twist, and a powerful scene of confrontation near the end.

1 out of 5 stars Poor, Pititful Gerry Starrett and Her Perfect Son.......2006-06-25

I am an avid reader of true crime, but this is the worst specimen of such that I have ever seen. This book focuses not so much on the crimes committed but how this serial kidnapper & rapist, once murderer, was treated so poorly behind bars. And the second story of this book focuses on how his mother worked dilligently to right those wrongs. The kidnapped, raped and murdered victims are but backdrops to this 400 page whine about the injustices suffered by the accused. This is the first work I have read by these authors and will most definitely be my last. Steven Naifeh & Gregory White Smith: Get out of the trime crime writing profession...leave it to the true professionals like Ann Rule, Corey Mitchell & Steve Jackson.

Last but not least, I must say this: many, many times we hear the accused blame negligent mothers, domineering mothers, or absentee fathers. Most times, I personally feel that this is one more attempt at ridding themselves of personal responsibility for their actions; more specifically, their choices. However, after reading this book I firmly believe that Danny Starret was the result of a over-worrisome, over-indulgent mother that, with her high-falutin' attitude, thought that her family was above evil doings. The statement that shook me the most was when discussing his case with defense attorney Bud Siemon, she made the statement "Danny is basically a good boy-" That one statement sums up the attitude of Gerry Starrett and her "perfect son."

4 out of 5 stars Could This Be your Neighbor?.......2006-03-13

The authors of this book have researched this book very thoroughly, and their style of writing is excellent. They compare and contrast the views of both the main characters that leave the reader wanting to learn more. This is a page-turner book in which you don't want to put down until it's finished.

3 out of 5 stars the victim was my cousin.......2005-06-05

That's right the victim Jeannie was my cousin. We went to the beach together several times when we were kids. Now I am 32 and finally found out the previously unspeakable (in my family) details through this book. We are the same age born one month apart. I was 15 at the time the murder happened.

We were very close friends, so it was interesting reading about her. Even if it was from the killer's viewpoint. It brought back a lot of memories. For example, she liked peach wine coolers, pringles chips, her favorites, just as the killer said. You could tell she was trying to please the killer with the lies she told him, typical for victims with the Hearst-like syndrome she developed after the trauma of being abducted from her home.

The last reviewer was mistaken when he said Chrissy was murdered, and the book never says she was. Also the reviewer before that didn't read the book well either, Starrett clearly admitted he killed Jeannie. She did not kill herself. There were two bullets in her chest, so how could she have killed herself anyway?

Anyhow, I knew her very well and she was a spunky young woman. Wild and crazy and a lot of fun. Had a lot of potential. Didn't have fear of anything, and like many teenagers believed she was invincible. She was brave and mentally strong. Once she got to know him, she never dreamed he would actually kill her.

The book didn't say how much she hated the name Jean and only used it in the "runaway" note to give clues for someone to find her. She also spelled letters in her name backwards which she normally never would have done. I knew her writing, as she wrote a lot. After her disapearance, the FBI called and interviewed all her friends, including me, looking for her.

True she could have escaped if she hadn't been so ballsy and if she hadn't had that "no one can hurt me" attitude. But I remember at that age I had the same attitude so I can't blame her.

What I find disturbing is the mother's lack of compassion for the family members of the victims. She wouldn't even provide a picture of her son to help in the search. Even if he had been innocent she still should have provided the photo to help investigators. The mother was so wrapped up in protecting her grown son that she lost sight of the fact that several girls were abused and one was killed. And throughout the book she seems to want people to feel sorry for her. How would she have felt if one of her children had been killed? She didn't bother to consider this. All she cared about was whether her murderer son would go to the death chamber, or whether he had adequate prison conditions. She should have been more concerned helping authorities throughout the case. If she wanted to do the right thing. But she was too selfish to help.

It is sad how the killer keeps making excuses for himself. He may have had brain damage from his childhood injuries, but lots of people, including myself had an untreated concussion as a child from a car accident, and I didn't grow up to be a criminal! He is a sadistic calculated rapist and murderer. Something went wrong in his brain but that does not mean he should be declared too ill to be executed.

I see Jeannie's parents (it's acutally her stepdad who raised her)usually once every year. After she died, they gave me a favorite trinket of hers which I still have to this day. They didn't have any other children.

She did want to become a lawyer as the book says, and I have no doubt she was more than smart enough. Too bad she didn't get the chance. She was also one of my best friends and it sure would be nice to have her around. We would have finished growing up together. I never had a large family, and most of the family I do have I am not close with. Those are other reasons why Jeannie was important to me. After we found out she was dead I was severly depressed. My grades got a lot worse and I acted out as a teenager, getting myself into a lot of trouble. Some of it I would have gotton into anyway and some I would not have. I can only imagine if it affected me so much how it affected her parents. It would be interesting to have a book from the victim's perspective, to compare.

Due to politics and the legal system this man was not put to death like he should have been. However, from the book Starrett seemed to dislike living in prison so perhaps his 10 life sentences will be a fate worse than death. I hope so. Even if he is "suffering" then at least, lucky for him, he gets to live out a full life unlike Jeannie who didn't have the chance. I can tell you his suffering in prison, of which he and his mother complain, will never equal the amount of suffering Jeannie's family has endured outside of prison.

1 out of 5 stars In a word--Ridiculous........2005-01-12

Given a choice, I wouldn't have given this book one measly star, but I was forced to. I've just finished the book (how, I don't know) and I'm glad it's over because if I had to read one more chapter beginning with wonderful Gerry Starrett sitting in her immaculate living room, holding hands with her perfect family, reflecting on the perfect previous years and 'her Danny', I was going to puke. I found this book to be more about the trials of Gerry Starrett than her son. I never read anything about the victims and their families. And I read very little about Danny's family (except for his strange mother) and nothing about his wife after all this except the two or three paragraphs when she asked for a divorce. Personally, it sounded to me as if Gerry was just a tad obsessed with her son and even after he confessed, she didn't believe 'her Danny' did anything. The guy was a freak and if his mother and he were as close as she claims they were, you think she would have seen some abnormalities in him. Granted, I can understand her desire to help her son but she attacked everybody around him and I got just plain sick of hearing about all the injustices that he was made to endure. He did, after all, rape a bunch of teenagers and kill one of them Gerry. If the purpose of this book--and it seemed to be that Gerry was the only participant in the writing of this book--was to conjure up sympathy for 'her Danny', it failed miserably. The only sympathy I felt for him was the embarrassment of having such a weird mother. (Example: her screaming at the prosecutor for mentioning the murder victim's name when 'her Danny' fell on the floor crying) She was just over the edge. She seemed extremely shallow, more worried about appearances than anything else. I actually thought her husband handled things much better than she did and I kept wondering when he was going to unload his half-crazed wife. As it turned out, she filed for divorce. As I said, I did manage to finish this book, but if you haven't read it, I wouldn't bother with it. It's nothing but a bunch of babble. It's actually a story about an anguished mother of a murderer than anything else.

5 out of 5 stars Sad, strange, powerful book!.......2002-07-22

This was a very sad book, you got the view of the family of the criminal in this book, how they feel about the crime of their son. It's very sad and odd, why Danny Starrett had become like that when he had a loving family??? When his mother talked about how he was when he was a kid and we see his baby and kid picutures you think how a little boy who look so nice and sweet can become like that? It's was very well wrote and a very powerful book.

Book Description

Growing up, we sometimes don't pay attention to the choices we are given. It is only with time that we begin to make them into our own possibilities and dreams. It is an amazing feeling to wake up and realize you are actually living your dream. As a child, I was taught to dream with my whole heart. I suppose I never prepared myself for when life changes so quickly that you barely have time to react. In an instant of fate, life takes you down a road you have never seen before. You feel afraid, timid, and challenged. The truth is, as much as we learn growing up, it truly isn't until these moments that we see just how much we can overcome and just how amazing life really is.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not really helpful about lyme.......2007-06-30

This book is more about her life dealing with rapes, bad relationships, college etc. It is a good book as far as a life story goes-well written and you feel deep compassion for her. However, I am dealing with chronic Lyme and the book did not focus enough on Lyme. It was too vague. I was looking for help and being able to relate to someone going through what I am. There of course was some mention, but not helpful to me. I would give it a 5 star for her life story, but as far as her reason for writting it (Lyme), I would have to give it less stars.

5 out of 5 stars Disease...With a Twist of Lyme.......2007-04-16

I've never had Lyme disease, nor have I personally ever known anyone with the disease, but I'm a voracious reader of all books, stories, poems, essays, newspaper articles, obituaries, and texts of public speeches related to the condition. Ms. Russo's illuminating--and uplifting--portrayal of one woman's journey reminded me of why I was so attracted to the illness in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Great Life Story.......2007-04-05

Great story about someone who has faced more then one challenge and the positive side of life and what could have been something so much worse. Wonderful spirit of family, life and the future.

5 out of 5 stars Very moving .......2007-04-03

"While I Was Walking" is a very moving memoir in which the author takes the reader along as she addresses some of the experiences and relationships that have shaped her life. Now dealing with an advanced case of Lyme disease, undiagnosed for too long, Sally spends her time writing about this frightening illness and the medical community's apparent confusion over its diagnosis and treatment. Determined to spread the word about the need for more research into Lyme disease, the extreme importance of early diagnosis, and of course, the appropriate treatment, Sally is hard at work on her next book, which will focus on Lyme disease and her personal battle with it.

5 out of 5 stars Heartfelt, open and honest.......2007-03-31

This is such a touching book. Readers can identify with the author and walk beside her on her journey through life. A must read. Sally, way to go!!!

Book Description

Teena Maguire should not have tried to shortcut her way home that Fourth of July. Not after midnight, not through Rocky Point Park. Not the way she was dressed in a tank top, denim cutoffs, and high-heeled sandals. Not with her twelve-year-old daughter Bethie. Not with packs of local guys running loose on hormones, rage, and alcohol. A victim of gang rape, left for dead in the park boathouse, the once vivacious Teena can now only regret that she has survived. At a relentlessly compelling pace punctuated by lonely cries in the night and the whisper of terror in the afternoon, Joyce Carol Oates unfolds the story of Teena and Bethie, their assailants, and their unexpected, silent champion, a man who knows the meaning of justice. And love.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Love Story- Difficult subject to discuss, let alone write about it.......2007-09-13

I must say when I saw the title I was a little put off by it, Rape a love story??, by when you begin to read it I believe it come out, the love of a little girl to her mother and love of a stranger (the cop) who feel it toward the little girl and the mother , I feel this because it would have been his family, and after seeing the wheels of justice slowly turn took action. Ms. Oates never fail to suprise me with her books and this is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars Harrowing.......2007-08-14

This novel is strong stuff. "Rape, A Love Story" contains the most harrowing description I've ever read of the physical, psychological and social consequences of being a rape victim. The novel is set in the Niagara Falls familiar to readers of "The Falls," but the style is quite different from many of Oates' other books. Weighing in at a spare 150 or so pages in paperback, the writing is tight and carries a punch. Oates uses tough, short sentences, and many non-sentences, echoing the thoughts of the narrator. I found little of Oates' lush Gothic style here; rather it's like a Greek tragedy, where a grievous wrong has occurred and the Gods will be avenged sooner or later. It's hard to say a lot without being a spoiler, so I won't, but this novel will make you think long and hard about justice--whether it was done in this case, whether it can ever adequately punish a crime of this kind, whether the legal system has been irreparably corrupted by money, whether there's any other answer. This is a tough book, but well worth your time.

1 out of 5 stars Pointless, unempowering, with an awkward narration........2007-06-30

First off, did I like the story? No I don't enjoy anything where people are brutalized. I can watch that on the news. The story reminded me of those horrible Charles Bronson movies, where the women are brutalized and left for dead, and big bad Charles Bronson comes in and kills all the bad guys in revenge. The woman is demoted to a thing, a catalyst for violence and forever remains a victim. Secondly, the narration is just plain weird, it's like the unseen narrator was speaking to the daughter in retrospect. You don't know who this narrator is and what part they play in the story.
Third, Oates revels in the pain and depression and horror of the gang rape, but Teena's eventual recovery and movement to a healthy relationship is covered in less then 10 pages. I find her relishment of the horror of rape to be disturbing. I do not recommend this book at all and I highly doubt I will ever read anything by Oates again. I do think that people who like Jodi Picault will Joyce Carol Oates.

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL BOOK ON A VERY SENSITIVE SUBJECT.......2007-05-27

Joyce Carol Oates is an author who knows no boundaries. She can write about anything, any subject, and make it a wonderful book. I must admit I was a little hesitant to read a book about rape. I don't have to tell you about what an awful, horrible, ghastly, crime rape is. How it has ripple effects upon its victim and everyone involved with the victim. When I read the title, RAPE, A LOVE STORY, I thought HUH? When you read this wonderful little book you will truly understand the title.

Teena Maguire and her daughter, Beth, live in Niagara Falls. They are well liked among their small community. On the 4th of July, they leave a party and decide to take a short cut through the park which changed both of their lives forever.

Teena is attacked, brutally beaten and gang-raped. Her 12 year-old daughter, Beth, is also attacked. Teena is a good looking, fun loving, GOOD person, but whoa, all of a sudden, due to her being an attractive woman, this vicious crime is HER FAULT and she got what she deserved since Teena was like, you know, asking for it.

This book is good. We are taken on a journey of a mother being raped, beaten, and left to die. Her poor daughter Beth, is able to hide and escape the worst, but has to hear everything her mom is going through. When she is able to summon help, the first officer at the scene is a young man, Officer Dromoor. What he sees also changes his life forever. Dromoor instantly feels a connection to the victims.

The book is short, as are the chapters. The book is totally engrossing. It is wonderful to see how, with time and love, that the human spirit can handle just about anything that life throws at it. The characters are totally human, from the rape/beating victims, to the police, to the community and the community's reaction to this crime, to the rapists themselves. This book covers just about every human emotion, but mostly you will find love and justice.

Read this book. It is truly a winner from Ms. Oates. While the subject matter is sensitive, Ms. Oates has every emotion pegged, from Teena to Bethie, to their friends and family. She also has pegged the rapists thoughts and feelings, along with those of their friends and family.

Don't let the title or subject matter scare you. This is a book well worth reading and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked Sexy and Glorious Love!.......2006-10-30

She's done it again in this little gem of a book -- a masterpiece at your feet. In concise, visceral strokes, Joyce Carol Oates delivers a brutalizing and transportative hook, but if you're up for a good crime fiction ride, by the end of the tale you'll see that there can certainly be another side to dark happenings, as in the grain of sand that is accepted and morphed into a pearl. I think this is my favorite of Ms. Oates's wonderful works, but then who could possibly read them all? So many of her novels, short stories, poems and lyrics are wonderfully remarkable. RAPE A LOVE STORY is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Full of truth, pain and the ultimate glory of love. Easy on the eyes, too...I recommend the little hardcover book in its deliciously printed dust jacket for the perfect handheld experience. The jacket painting is extraordinarily heartbreaking and so gorgeous you could hang it on the wall and savor it like a Rembrandt or set it on the table and admire like a Michelangelo sculpture. This little book is a magnificent experience to behold!

1 out of 5 stars You are Not alone? Please leave this book alone.......2005-05-20

This book is boring and stupid. I skipped numerous pages and still could pick up with the story without feeling like I didn't read some important information. The reason being is because there are a lot of pages that don't list anything important so I skipped it. In other words pages of useless information. I would give this book 2 starts. Some things were ok but I wouldn't ever recommend this book to anyone else who loves a good read such as myself. My sister also attempted to read this book and stopped before she reached page 20. Every one is entitled to their opinion so you decide? But I didn't like it. I found myself rolling my eyes and feeling pressured to finish it. When I did I was more disappointed with the sorry ending just as the entire book. Read "Saved in the City" by Jacquelin Thomas now that is a good book.

1 out of 5 stars terrible.......2003-07-20

I read this book and I did not like it. It appears the author can't speak english cause the grammar is terrible. The story is boring. I do suggest that if you have trouble sleeping at night, read this because it will put you to sleep inside of 1 page.

AND SHE HAS A HARD TIME GETTING OVER THAT, THEN HER BABY FARTHER ASK HER BACK.
2. NEXT WOMAN HAS A DRUG PROBLEM, IT TAKES SOMETHING TO GO WRONG FOR HER TO SEEK HELP
3. THE NEXT LADY START DATING AN OLD CHILD HOOD BOYFRIEND WHILE ATTRACTED TO ANOTHER MAN THEN SHE ENDS UP HAVING TO MAKE A CHOICE
4. THE LAST LADY IS A LESBIAN WHO START HAVING FEELINGS FOR HER FIRST LOVE AND ACTS ON THEM THEN SHE HAS TO MAKE A CHOICE.

NOW THIS IS A NICE PLOT BUT THE AUTHOR DID NOT BRING IT OUT TO WELL

2 out of 5 stars Wasn't the worst but far from the best.......2002-05-24

I bought this book and could not wait to read it. It was a disappointment. It wasn't the worse book that I have read but it was not the best. I am the type of person, once I begin reading a book I don't stop until I am finish. This is the only reason that I completed this book. There were entirely too many typing errors. Ms. Hunter did not do a very good job developing her characters in my opinion. I also feel as though she left you hanging at the end. This book was a little better than 2 stars but not better than three.

4 out of 5 stars Sisters needing Sisters.......2002-04-08

There comes a time in everyoneýs life when they need to know someone cares. In Angel Hunterýs debut novel, You Are Not Alone, we are given the chance to view the lives and relationships of four special black women. This novel is definitely a winner. Hunter is the founder of The Essence of Self Center, an organization that offers life-enhancing workshops to individuals and groups.

This novel is about sisterhood and friendships. Beginning with the cover you can see that this is a good book. Pictured are four beautiful black women who are neither sad nor smiling. Their eyes tell you thereýs a story to be told.

Crystal, Elsie, Susan and Jewell are the key players in Hunterýs novel. Laced with love, addiction and lust these four sisters take friendship to a new level. The four women work together in a law firm: Crystal, Elsie, and Susan are attorneys and Jewell is the paralegal. Together, these four women realize they share a common bond. Crystal is stuck in her past and cannot move forward with her life. Elsie wants to have it both ways, she is bisexual, but she wants to have children. Susan is in complete denial about her drug addiction. Jewell is just downright confused, she is dating a white man, but when her sonýs father reappears the confusion over her feelings for him increases. Even though these women have never discussed their personal business, suddenly Crystal decides to bring them together and this is the story really heats up.

Hunter is clear and concise in her writing. The plot is delivered easily in a fast paced entertaining novel. She brings it all together in an ending that makes you want to know more about what happened to the characters.

I really enjoyed reading this novel. The hallmark of the novel is the storyline that kept me glued to my seat. Each page is filled with scenes of high emotion and drama. I could not get enough. Ms. Hunter has written an excellent novel about friendship and support between African American women. I plan to buy other books by the author.

This is the last of the 'Men of Honor' series by Cathie Linz. It is another cute read in the Silhouette Romance series.

Following the heels of the previous book, "The Marine and Me", Cathie picks up a story about Tom Kozlowski, the youngest Marine brother who is recovering from injuries. Callie Murphy moves in temporarily to the cabin behind his retreat at the behest of Tom's brother Striker. Though he resists interacting with her, Callie's adventures keep roping Tom in.

Within the story, I found that Tom's injuries were not fully explored emotionally, he did not seem blinded enough by his desire to return to the Marine Corps. However, a sub story where both Tom and Callie help a bullied child at the school Callie teaches at shows the author's versitility in character creation and also broaches an important current event in US culture.

I enjoyed picking this up, I do wish the story was longer to feed the entire picture that exists with the Kozlowski family.
