Wow. .......2006-10-25
Beautifully written personal story that speaks to the universal experience of loss. At times, this deeply honest story is quite heartwrenching, yet the depiction of this personal tale --- often peppered with comical insights and characters who become familiar to the reader --- is heartening in its courageous depiction of how deep the wounds of death can cut and how the path to healing is long and filled with personal revelations.
Sad but good.......2006-03-11
I gave this book a B mostly because I have a really difficult time with books that are continually sad, even though I can recognize that they are sad but moving and well-written (as was the case with this book). Of course the book is a true story, so the author's continued focus on death is understandable, since she is unable to come to terms with her sister's death. However, it was a bit much for me, especially because I had thought it would be more uplifting than (to me) it was. However, I did enjoy looking at the different belief systems every week and seeing the differences between various religious spaces that the author encountered.
Not an easy read, but a truly worthwhile one.......2005-08-15
A Month of Sundays is a powerful book that reflects the process of grief better than any other book I've read. I deeply felt the author's pain and her need for spiritual truths and answers. Throughout her 31 Sundays, Ms. Mars doesn't find the kind of easy answers we all hope for, but this makes the story more raw and real. I wonder about her now, and I hope she has found some peace and comfort since writing this difficult story.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has experienced loss and feels alone in the quest for meaning.
Wonderful Book.......2005-07-05
In A MONTH OF SUNDAYS, author Julie Mars grapples with her beloved older sister Shirley's death - the events leading up to it, the death itself, and the chaotic feelings she's left with afterward. To cope with her grief, she visits a different church each week for 30 weeks in a search for understanding, peace, and meaning. Meaning does come, not with any grand, sweeping insights, but slowly, in bits of memory and experience. And that's what so beautiful about this book - the way Mars weaves together daily stories, past and present, as she seeks to cope with deep emotion. She stops to look at the events that most of us allow to drift by, and thus inspires us to pay closer attention to our own lives. She's a wonderful writer, and her stories are alive with her vivid prose. I gave copies of her book to several friends who are coping with personal loss, and copies to other friends, too, who are not - this book is for everyone with a drive to look deeply into life.
One Step Forward Two Back in Grief.......2005-06-02
Two Steps Forward, One Back in Grief
In the preface of her newest book, A MONTH OF SUNDAYS: SEARCHING FOR THE SPIRIT AND MY SISTER, Albuquerque, New Mexico author, Julie Mars says: "For seven months, I took care of my sister, Shirley, who was dying of pancreatic cancer....I witness her intense spiritual turbulence and her return to Catholicism....I consider it an honor and a privilege to be with her every day as she considers the state of her soul....As my sister's faith forms its final shape and hardens, mine disappears....When I return home to Albuquerque, I feel a driving need...to go to church."
So Mars does, for 31 Sundays, the equivalent of a month, visiting Christian, Sort-of-Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Unitarian, and nonsectarian places of worship.
Each visit triggers thoughts, feelings and remembrances of Shirley, their siblings and parents; and Shirley's children. Using simple, direct language, Mars interweaves her family's relationships, Shirley's advance toward death, and her own spiritual search for something she can call God, into a microcosm of human experience.
A visit to the Church of the Latter Day Saints evokes this thought: "My father taught me, expected me, to be tough, to follow my own strong will, and not apologize for it. I did. But secretly, I locked myself in the closet and cried so hard I could not breathe. Waves of sadness washed over me, washing me away, and I was enormously bereft, lonely, scared of everything. That was when Shirley would whisper through the door that she wanted to come in. I would crawl into her lap and drink in her silence."
Describing this intimate moment, Mars states a universal truth. Independence can terrify. Everyone needs a safe person and a safe place. Everyone faces the moment when they must lose that security.
The combination of universal and personal experience in this and many other paragraphs in the book makes A MONTH OF SUNDAYS: SEARCHING FOR THE SPIRIT AND MY SISTER a compelling, tender, and moving read.
So do Mars' frank descriptions of caring for a dying person, right to the moment Shirley becomes so weak, she needs diapers, just before her "Final Dive," as Mars calls it, into delirium and coma. Mars' spiritual search and its climax, add a final touch on the last page of the story.
A MONTH OF SUNDAYS is a thoughtful and moving book for anyone, but especially for those facing illness, death, loss, spiritual crisis, and grief. The story is not for the airport or the beach, but for a time to sit down, and think, about life.

Book Description
In this brilliant novel, John Updike has created one of his most memorable characters: the Reverend Tom Marshfield -- literate, charming, sexual -- whose outrageous behavior with the ladies of his flock scandalizes his parish....
Customer Reviews:
A Decent Book from a Much Better Writer..........2006-09-26
For those of you who have come to admire Updike's work, especially from the Rabbit Series, this novel will come as a disappointment. The story of Reverend Tom Marshfield whose sexual escapades with his parishioners causes many problems and eventully lands him in a place to be rehabilitated so that he can return to his church revitalized and purged of his wanton desires leaves much to be desired.
I had many problems getting into the novel - Updike seems to preoccupied with trying to establish Tom as a very astute and observant character with many insights into religion and life. Like with many novels that try to create unique and interesting perspectives, I found the text a little dull with nothing to entertain. If I wanted a diatribe on different subjects, I would buy a collection of essays. I found that Updike fails to have us really care or empathize with Tom's perspective (something Coetzee does marvelously in a similar novel Elizabeth Costello) so any rant he goes on comes off as unwanted. The middle of the text is where things pick up, when we finally find out what series of events leads to Tom being in the position he is in. For awhile, I couldn't put the book down as I raced through scenes of Tom coming to grips with his desires and needs, only to find the end of the novel return to the plodding pace that made the beginning so dull.
Stylistically , Updike is a writing master, as his prose is clear and succinct. It's a pleasure to read the way he constructs sentences. It's a shame that it's wasted on this somewhat problematic story.
Hilarious celebration of pagan flesh and baffled spirit.......2005-09-10
When the Reverend Thomas Marshall is busted for philandering with more than one of his buxom parishoners, he's dispatched by his bishop to a desert sanitorium for forty days of reflection, recuperation and golf. His carer, Ms Prynne, suggests he write as a form of therapy and this novel consists of Marshall's morning writing exercises and four sermons which he writes on Sundays. He recounts his recent past, the infidelities which led him here, reflecting on the joys of the flesh and the agonies of the spirit. In so doing, he also embarks on a cunning seduction of Ms Prynne... This is a wonderfully clever comic novel. It's rich with layers of symbolism and Biblical references - the Omega-shaped sanitorium, the forty days and nights in the desert - and bubbles along with puns, comic typographical errors, plus arch footnotes and endless wisecracks. It's beautifully plotted, impeccably structured, and like most of Updike's work, it's laugh-out-loud funny but utterly serious in its intent. It's an exploration of the nature and challenges of religious faith in contemporary America. The "sermons" are spectacular examples of the way we can reason the Bible into meaning anything - we can even turn adultery into the purpose of marriage and the key to fulfilling one's human destiny. Updike's control of language is astonishing - some reviewers find it confounding but they lack the patience to read this book slowly, to savour it like a seduction, to enjoy it as it was meant to be enjoyed. When you look back, you realize how meticulously crafted it's all been, and you're dazzled not only by that craftsmanship but also by how lightly it wears the weight. Updike's touch is deft, subtle and most of all incredibly funny.
Imitation Nabokov.......2004-11-22
I found this perhaps Updike's worst novel, because here, rather than writing as John Updike, he makes an ill-advised attempt to become Vladimir Nabokov. This novel reads like what a college English major might produce just after they had read LOLITA for the first time. Updike's Marshfield is a pallid Humbert. The effort, to reach for what Nabokov did with LOLITA, is transparent. Updike's attempt to be arch, witty, and erotic, like the earlier book, is clumsy. This novel is embarassingly derivative. If you want real Updike, try THE CENTAUR, or the Rabbit series.
dark revelations from a priest.......2004-01-19
updike's dark novel of a priest's innermost revelations through his life's journey. not an upbeat read by any means
you people are crazy.......2002-11-13
This is a fabulous book. It marries esoteric philosophy and ultimate, base humanity better than any book I've ever read. This combination gives it the ammunition to truly shoot to the core of a reader. And I found it quite easy to read.
Book Description
A humorous account of an American husband and wife who stumble upon the perfect "Enchanted April" villa on the French Riviera near St-Tropez. But knowing little of the language and even less of the culture, will they find blissor the Bastilleas they attempt to live in France?
Think of Peter Mayle meeting Francis Mayes on the Cote d'Azur.
A Month of Sundays is a must read for those of you interested in the pros and cons of villa rentalswhether your preference is Provence, Tuscany, or any other destination. Although finding that dream villa involves more effort than booking a hotel room, the enhanced cultural experience, the extra privacy, the additional space, and the lower cost for room and board will make you wonder why you ever vacationed any other way.

Very Disappointing.......2006-12-01
Having bought this book on the strength of the reviews on this page, I feel compelled to give another point of view. This book just proves that anyone can write and publish a book. It was insipid, self-absorbed and very simply written. At the same time I also bought Susie Kelly's "A Perfect Circle" which is a real gem. She is actually interested in the places she goes to and the people she meets.
Excellent value.......2006-08-25
Book was as described and in perfect condition - buy with confidence from this seller.
Absolutely Delightful!.......2004-06-23
Although I am only up to page 78 of this book, I felt compelled to share with any potential readers what a joy this is! So far I have laughed out loud, sighed in envy (it has always been my dream to relocate permanantly to the South of France) and eagerly savored each page. Peter Mayle first whet my appetite for happy tales from Provence, but Ira and Barbara Spector solidified my dream. One of the reviewers on the back of the copy said it all "Absolutely Charming From the Get-Go!" This is a Keeper! I'll recommend it to all my friends, but they have to buy their own copy!
Still smiling........2004-02-18
Thanks for a delightful visit to the South of France...I`ve always wanted to go there...so glad that I did not have to pack. It`s easy to imagine this book as a comedic movie. I chuckled and smiled all the while reading this witty account of a American couple discovering Southern France. Hopefully looking forward to more adventures with this husband-wife writing team ...perhaps Italy next time.
A Month of Sundays: Villa Life in the South of France.......2004-02-06
"A Month of Sundays"is a joyous, witty and humorous read about the adventures of a busy American couple who spend four weeks each year in their "dream villa" in the South of France--sharing in what the French call "Farniente "--better known as "studying the inside of your eyelids". Each chapter is accompanied by by charming sketches which help tell the story. If you have been to the South of France --you will know that the Spectors are right on the "mark" or should I say "franc"--if you have never been there --the book will transport you --via your armchair-- to share in the wonderous adventures and misadventures of Americans on French turf. I liked this book so much, I gave copies to a number my friends and relatives who are now trying to "study the inside of their eyelids" to learn the Spector way to peace, tranquility and bliss.

Emily needs help, desperately - enough to get it from the man who broke her heart.......2006-04-13
Emily Marshall has stopped looking for love and got engaged to a man who can give her the material things in life. Unfortunately while on a short overnight cruise in his yacht she overhears a conversation that tells her he's into something very illegal. She sneaks away from her daily routine to let the police know what's going on -- and after waiting in a room for a long time, who shows up but the man who broke her heart, Jim Keegan.
Emily doesn't have any real evidence but the police are willing to look into the situation, if she will help them. Jim can pose as her brother (conveniently living far away), move in for a visit and see if he can find enough evidence on her fiance to put him away.
I don't like romances where the hero drives the heroine away 'for her own good' but in this book that episode is in the past and Jim has to learn better. As you expect from Brockmann the villains are seriously nasty, and in this book the heroine spends a lot of time up close to them pretending she doesn't know anything is going on. One of the author's best books, highly recommended.
What happened??.......2002-11-12
I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I reviewed this book when I first read it, maybe one year ago?? I don't know what happened to the review, I didn't give anything away... I do remember that I absolutely loved it and it was in fact the best book I have ever read by author Suzanne Brockmann. I read 2-3 books a week and I cannot say I remember specifics, (of no help I know) but I wanted readers to know it is very worth the read. Very fast paced and you will no doubt have trouble putting it down.

Issues of Religious conflict, Interfaith prayer & marriage .......2005-06-03
"this book offers a clear and challenging introduction to key issues that arise again and again when Christians and churches enter into conversation with their neighbors of other faiths - among them interfaith prayer, interfaith marriage, religion and conflict, and dialogue and mission." Bill Perkins
Christians & Pluralistic Age:
Although interfaith dialogue has established itself as a key concern for Christian thinkers, and the churches in ecumenical dialogue, it continues to pose social, practical and theological concerns in many believer minds. Meeting people of diverse faiths is an everyday experience, for Christians as a majority in America, or as minority communities in Asia, the Middle east and elsewhere.
Issues in interfaith Relations:
Weaving together accounts from daily life, ecumenical texts and discussions, and theological reflection, the author introduces and presents some key issues that arise into everyday living, and dialogue with other faiths, challenging the traditional Augustinian predestination, and the concept of the Judaic election that Jesus time after time refuted, praising the faith of the Canaanite woman (Mat 15-28) and the Roman centurion (Mat 8.10). It is in the light of Jesus teaching of the new sonship of all, even the Samaritan woman, that the dialogue continues, for, "This is right and acceptable in the sight of God our savior, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth." (1 Tim, 2: 3,4)
Ecumenical Author:
Dr. Ariarajah, Professor of Ecumenical Theology at Drew University, was active in the Interfaith Dialogue Program of the WCC. His books include: Issues in Interfaith Relations and Axis of Peace. He recounts his wide range of personal experiences - as a child, student of Hinduism, Protestant pastor in Sri Lanka; and later an active participant in interfaith issues, "I was born in a country where over 90% of the people are either Buddhists, Hindus or Muslims. Of the 7.8% Christians, the Protestant variety of which I am a part, is only 0.4%. ...Christians of Sri Lanka are also taught from their childhood that ours was the only 'true' religion that led all people to their 'salvation.' This meant that other religions were 'false,' 'in error' or at least did not have the capacity to lead people to their desired destiny."
